[Some readers set up a meeting with Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) as part of the You Work For Us Summer Tour. They sent me a report on the meeting, and I think they did such a fantastic job, that I wanted to share it with all of you. Now this is what I call active citizenship -- great job to everyone involved! -- CHS]
Senator Bingaman, You Work for Us Summer Tour
Our small group met with Senator Bingaman at a restaurant near the airport while he was between flights to small NM towns. He arrived with a fact sheet designed to dispel the Republican Main-Stream-Media Talking Point that we have a “Do-Nothing Congress.” The list of legislation passed and signed, passed and waiting to be signed, and passed in both houses but awaiting completion of conference reports is impressive. Unfortunately, the list of legislation passed AND SIGNED was quite short, making it clear that we need more than a marginal Democratic majority if we hope to see significant change.
Senator Bingaman was very clear that the agenda has certainly been changed by the Democratic Congress. Under bare-bones Democratic control, there have been significant legislative accomplishments on behalf of students and children (higher education, head start, student loans, health insurance), workers (raise in minimum wage), small businesses (tax relief), the environment and energy (renewables, efficiency, biofuels), implementation of 9-11 Commission Recommendations, more benefits for war vets, significant ethics reform, and support for research and development (from the National Labs to schools) to increase America’s competitive edge (this last that Bingaman was instrumental in writing).
Our group is aware that the 110th Congress has been productive with some very good legislation, including ethics reform, however, we were more interested in discussing our disappointment that the message sent by the voters last November has failed to penetrate the Washington bubble.
Our representative from Voter Action had prepared his own handout for the Senator on the disaster of Senator Feinstein’s pathetic attempt at voting protection. In contrast, the superior bill, HB 811 (Holt), needs sponsors in the Senate. He emphasized the strong (paper, verifiable) and weak (audit needs improvement) elements of New Mexico’s voting reforms, and he encouraged Senator Bingaman to become a Senate sponsor of S.559, the Senate version of the Holt bill. (Following our meeting, we understand that Senator Bingaman will be looking into Senator Nelson’s S.559.)
We had a great opportunity to press Senator Bingaman over issues like FISA. What happened? Was it leadership failure? How did this get the support of 16 Democratic Senators?
In brief, it appears that being called “unpatriotic” and “soft on terror” is more terrifying to some elected officials than the loss of habeas corpus!! Further, the 6 month limit and legislative weariness (August break) compelled many to vote for the FISA bill.
We discussed the criminal activity throughout the executive branch, subpoenas, and especially the failure of Democrats to create and always use effective talking points to counter the prevailing message of the Republican-controlled corporate media. We suggested that the Democrats adopt the strategy of attacking perceived Republican strengths: for example when the Republicans accuse the Democrats of being weak on national defense, instead of denying the charge, the Democrats should strike back by pointing out that the US spends more on national defense than all the rest of the world combined. This may contribute to national security, but it is national lunacy, because it results in wrong-headed budgets that leave us fatally vulnerable to collapsed bridges, not to mention lost cities from breached levees, an unimaginable horror from which there remains no recovery.
Our representative from the NM Attorney General’s office noted that along with our failing infrastructure, all the resources (time, energy and money) being consumed by Iraq and the necessary investigations of the Executive Branch leave no resources to deal effectively with domestic problems such as a growing meth-amphetamine epidemic. This is a growing problem nationwide, and it is impacting rural New Mexico more and more. Some of our most horrific recent crimes are directly linked to methamphetamine.
What the people want most is to end the war and to have universal single-payer healthcare. With regard to the war, we emphasized that Democrats want to see some strong indications of push-back against the Republican policy of continuing the war indefinitely. The Democratic base would be energized, even though the votes aren’t there yet. As one of our group said, “We have your back”.
The bottom line on the war (as with all legislation) is that we need 60 votes in the Senate. A campaign to influence some Senators who have been unwilling to cross the President is the only hope. (Senator Domenici, you work for us. We need to talk.)
The meeting came about after a couple of active Democrats from our grassroots group attended a function at UNM where Bingaman was speaking about student loan legislation that has passed. They pressed for another meeting (no others were scheduled for Albuquerque), and it was arranged. Bingaman was very accessible.
I don’t think we can get a meeting with Domenici, but we will try. There will be a fundraiser for Domenici in a private Albuquerque home soon that Bush will attend. I guess now Bush is not able to even go into a public venue at all. Of course none of us will be paying $1000 or $5000 to attend that function. . .
[CHS notes: In case you are wondering, the following Senators could use some pressure on Iraq: Domenici (NM), Gordon Smith (OR), Lugar, Sununu, Voinovich, Hagel, Snowe, Collins, Warner, maybe Ben Nelson (Nebraska) -- just in case you and a few of your closest political buddies need a project in the next couple of weeks. Frankly, all of them could use an earful. If you meet with your Senator or Representative, do send us a report -- we'd love it.]

Good morning.
Sweet!
What great proof that you are ’strong on terror’ by throwing the constitution in the trash bin. How mighty of you congress critters.
YES YES YES! We need MUCH more of this kind of response! MUCH MORE! Go! Go! Go! Dems, you listening? ATTAAAAAAACK!
Hi Christy!
Great Post!
Here’s an idea. Dems should start a fund to pay for 1 or 2 seats at Domenici’s (and other Republican fund raisers) Go with a short list of points, be respectful and watch them squirm.
Good morning, all…
Nancy and Harry want the FISA documents.
Huge thank you to reader BG for putting this report together and sending it to me, along with all the other YWFUST visit compadres who met with Sen. Bingaman. Fantastic job to all of you!

Ummm, wouldn’t it be better to get the subpoenaed documents *before* you pass a law legalizing spying? Just a thought, Nancy and Harry.
Yay for New Mexico! Now if we can just get rid of Domenici and the loathsome Heather Wilson…

Did we get our apology yet?
We in the CA-3 Congressional District are working hard to end Dan Lungren’s dismal record in the house. If there are any CA-3 members out there who would like to help please click on the facebook icon next to my name. We need help.
what a *fabulous idea* !
even though my congresspeople all voted against FISA, theres still unrest about other matters here in my district.
im going to start w/ my house rep, (hinchey), by forwarding this thread to him, (i made him aware of fdl when i saw him on his memorial day swing thru town), & then trying to set up a similar meeting with him.

CHS,
A while back Loo Hoo and I met with Darryl Issa’s District Deputy and we sent you our reports on the meeting. I think there was a massive amount of oversight issues that were keeping you and this site really busy and we didn’t hear from you.
Now that we’re in the dog days of summer and things are a bit slower, would you like us to resend our notes?

Did someone press him on his coward lito vote ( for cloture, againzt Alito)?
OT: MZM $140,000 contract was supposedly to keep mail safe. It was also referred to as “office furniture”. I read that Cheney keeps all paperwork in a big special “safe” in his office. I think that might be what it was…MZM got him a safe….just a silly, fly by comment.

Educated Plaintiff @ 16: I saw Hinchey in Owego soon after the FISA vote and spoke with him and with his local guy Dan Lamb and pointed them to this very very happy place. When I spoke to Hinchey, I have to tell you, I had this sense of his weariness and disgust with the Administration. He gave a great stump speech about what had been done and what needed to be done. He also referred to Bushco as “the most impeachable administration”. Love Maurice – and he is not even my guy. His district has part of my county though, so I always go to his local stuff.

“In brief, it appears that being called “unpatriotic” and “soft on terror” is more terrifying to some elected officials than the loss of habeas corpus!!”
Next time this happens, the elected Dem official should say, “Well, I hope I don’t get arrested, I won’t even get a chance to talk to my lawyer.”
See how easy it is to pivot from perceived weakness to how unAmerican the Administration is.
Biodun @ 29

btw, for those of you who live in Jerry McNerney’s district, here are some public events that he’ll be having — great way to get a question or two into the conversation:

If you have time to go to one of both of these events, and can report back to us on how they go, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
egregious @ 28
Of course. That makes much more sense!! lol
I saw Debbie Stabenow at a meeting in Adrian MI this week and asked her why the Dem. leadership allowed the FISA legislation to go through. She said that they were very concerned about present threats of terrorism, specifically threats on the anniversary of 9/11. That some people on the Senate intelligence committee were convinced by information they had seen that they had to something now to fix the “foreign to foreign” glitch. She said that while she and Carl Levin did not support the bill that passed, people of good intent felt that they had to. She said that she felt the legislation was way too broad. I asked if the Senate would address this when they return and she said they would but that she didn’t believe that they would change anything until the 6 mo. re-authorization time.I asked why they would trust the administration on this but she just responded that it figured that they would wait until the last minute (right before vacation) to do this.
I found her explanation unsatisfactory. If they felt they had to fix FISA they should have stayed until they got it right. I posted this over at TNH a few days ago.
Katie at 34 — That is supremely unsatisfying. And close to what I keep hearing as excuses from so many people who have talked with their reps. SIGH I keep hearing that the leadership was caught off guard with how pissed off the reaction was…well, what in the hell did you expect when you trust the Bush Administration — again — and hand over yet another chunk of the rule of law — AGAIN — so you can go home quickly for vacation? Sheeeeeesh.
No matter what these stinkin’ politicians say about being careful not to sound soft on terror and all that crapola, they took an oath to defend the Constitution, and anyone who voted for the FISA bill, didn’t defend the Constitution. Same with the Patriot Act. Same with the Military Commission bill. They all broke their oath.
Grrrrrrrr.
Katie,
Agree. “Trust me” should not be the basis for legislation. Not with this gang of criminals. I mean it’s worked out so well in the past.
Rep. Don Young (Repub AK) was taking care of his constituency of one in Florida. From TPMuckraker:Link
LS at 36 — Whoa, there — not all of them. A large number of them spoke out against and voted against the craptastic bill. Let’s not lump everyone in with the Blue Dogs all at one time, thank you very much.
“The bottom line on the war (as with all legislation) is that we need 60 votes in the Senate.”
Maybe the bottom line, but it’s not the only line. Ditto FISA. Ditto impeachment. Ditto, ditto, ditto.
This thinking that “Well, we don’t have the votes, so we might as well vote counter-principle” is a grave disservice to those who voted you into office in good faith.
What’s more, it completely dismisses the possibility that bold stands, even futile bold stands, can lead to gathering and unstoppable momentum.
(Comments directed at Dems, in general, Senator)
Christy Hardin Smith @ 22
I just sent it to you and also emailed LooHoo to do same.
I’m still trying to get my hands on a public schedule for Difi. If anyone gets any information on her public schedule PLEASE let me know. Boxer will be at our next Central Committee Meeting on Wednesday. I can’t wait to ask her why she refrained from voting on something so important.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 39
I didn’t mean it that way. I meant the ones that voted for the bills. All of “them”.
Jean2K at 40 — I think the Senator’s point was more along the lines of they need some help from the public putting pressure on a few potential sway votes to make this work and stick. Which is exactly what we are trying to do with these meetings and letters and public accountability moments.
We may not be able to run Congress, but we can certainly make it clear that we are watching what they do — or don’t do — very closely. And that we will hold them to account for it, so they’d better start holding the Bush Administration to account. And now.
egregious @ 37
Actually, Democrats were handed the keys to Congress last November because the voters don’t trust the Administration. When will this very simple, easy to understand concept get through the critters’ pointy little noggins?
In case folks missed it the first time around, I wanted to re-link his very useful piece on corresponding with your elected representatives. Handy as a reference guide for letters, postcards, faxes, letters to the editor and the like. Huge thanks to Mauimom and TRex for their useful tips and hints.
mc @ 45
Actually I think they understand that point perfectly. When I start asking myself why they do it, it always begs the question what the hell does bushco have on these people?
tbsa @ 42
Yes, I’d like to know too. Very unlike her.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 35
They think all we were concerned about was ending the war. That’s how the media played it. We have to make sure they know that we are demanding they stop this administration from destroying the Constitution, to be the opposition party, and that if they do this, we’ve got their backs.
This should not surprise anyone after the many lies told by Bush.

I was really struck by the “we’ve got your back” comment in the initial post.
It got my wheels turning about what more I can do to influence my blue dog Rep and one of my Senators.
Particularly with Joe Donnelly, I don’t think assuring him that we’ve got his back will be too reassuring for him considering his district.
The county Democratic Party is frankly abysmal in my county, which didn’t break for ONE SINGLE Democrat in the last election — even the two Dems who represent us (Donnelly in the US House and a state legislator) lost our county but had enough votes from other parts of their districts to win.
How does one go about strengthening their local Democratic Party?
In my case, I’ve tried to get involved, but it seems nearly impossible to get anyone to DO anything. I tried to encourage them to stay active after the ‘06 election, but they seem to prefer to just take a hiatus and only get active in the couple of months before an election.
You can’t make a comeback by only putting in effort for a few months every two years!
How can someone like me light a fire under their butts without alienating the leadership?
If we had a much more effective party at the county level, I think we would have more ability to influence blue dogs in the House.
Another Repug bites the dust:
Dems should grab that seat if they can.
Hi, I wanted to ask if on an official tax paid web site Dave Weldon of Florida can put titles like “Democrats’ Energy Bill: Consumers Are the Villains” and “Democrats Make Mockery of House. Why? To Give Jobs and Housing to Illegal Immigrants”
It seems wrong, he represents all the people in his district.

Fair enough. But, if ANY officials are still waiting to hear a message of disgust and outrage from the electorate for the status quo, or support for change, then they just haven’t been paying attention.
At some point, some of them have to stand up and have a Jimmy Stewart moment in a loud and public way. Principle, over all else. Predetermined vote outcome be damned.
I, and many others have been beating our heads against the wall for 6-1/2 years. I’m sick and tired of waiting for them to get the message.
SufiLizard at 51 — I don’t know what part of the country you live in, but a project that I did with my local DemWomen’s group and the DemMen’s group (Yes, we are still divided by gender. Don’t ask.) was to get donations together to send to troops overseas through AnySoldier. Because I’m in WV, we have a large portion of our population serving in units thathave rotated in and out of Afghanistan and Iraq. When you go to the AnySoldier website, you really get a feel for how little they have in terms of comfort from home — a lot of them barely get mail from family or friends, and the military is supplying less and less of basic needs these days due to cost-cutting. (You know, some units need toilet paper. I kid you not.)
Anyway, it was a great way to get folks active — and to solicit donations from the public as well — which we mail out to these soldiers. Our union folks have also done plumbing and other handiwork for military families at home who need help while a spouse is away — most of them are barely getting by with a cut in pay for reservists and national guard folks especially, and having someone come over to fix a busted pipe rather than having to pay someone is a HUGE help.
That’s just a couple of things. But creating that cohesive feeling among the group is a great way to get them moving in a good direction together. And I’m sure there are projects that you could come up with that would resonate locally for you as well. It’s worth a shot…
SufiLizard, I just found this:

My thoughts, too. What a disastrous congressional crew we have here in Alaska. I doubt either Stevens or Young will last unindicted until election day. Sen. Murkowski doesn’t come up for re-election until 2010.

Still waiting and hoping to see your Benson writeup at ActBlue. Can we help with a little pressure on them?
You can assure Diane I’m jumping in with both feet, same as last time.
Thanks for all you’re doing.

CHS,
Thanks, those are some great ideas. I’m in Indiana where God and Country are probably revered as much as WV.
It just frustrates me that when I campaigned for State legislature last year so many people in this heavily Republican district were in agreement on so many important issues, but they still think they’re Republicans.
If we had a stronger Democratic Party here, I know we could help a majority of people realize they’re actually Democrats (and not DLC Democrats either).
Audrey @ 49
Good point. My sense is that, with very few exceptions, that once someone gets elected, D or R, that it’s like being admitted to a club, and that there are “rules” for admittance to the club. And one of those rules is that they all “trust” one another.
Oh sure, they can spout off about their esteemed friend from X state, but that’s just part of the game. It does come down to this trust issue. Everybody has the best of intentions and they would never do anything to hurt this country.
Until now. The evidence is just too overwhelming that the actions of this Administration are harming the country-not just the Iraq occupation, but also the destruction of the armed forces, the “take from the poor to feed the rich” economic policies, the neglect of real environmental challenges, and on and on.
Who in the world could trust anything that this Administration says? It boggles the mind.

CHS@58: I just sent your response to SufiLizard to my DH, who is in the state capital with other union folks. We have talked about this before – having the unions do real work with local military families – between two of the unions on campus, they have everything from physics profs to electricians and plumbers, so these folks could do some very very “good work” locally. Thank you so much for bringing this up.

hi toby – ya – maurice is the greatest & i feel blessed he’s my rep. unfortunately some ultralibs down here (n. ulster), w/ an impossible agenda have been way too critical of him – so i think a meeting is in order so he can set them straight with the true fact – which i trust him to give 100%.
You know, in reading over various news items, it strikes me that what may galvanize the public is something that is a pretty foolproof issue: where it hits J.Q.Public in the pocketbooks.
In other words, I think I’d look to the mortgage fiasco as a strong contender for becoming THE issue in the presidential campaign.
Sufi — What I did was go onto the AnySoldier website and pull off several pages of things the soldiers needed and then came up with a list of similar items across the spectrum. The thing about the website is that the entreis change pretty much weekly, because deplyments get moved around and their needs shift with where they are — so when you ship things out, you really have to log back in and find a fresh batch of soldier units to ship to (I hope that makes sense, but let’s just say you can’t pick out a unit, take a month to put together a package and have a viable address to send it to by the end of the month a lot of the time).
One of the most heartbreaking entries that I found was a medical unit that was asking for children’s medications (like tylenol and ibuprofin, for example) and for IV needles that were small enough for kids, because they didn’t have them at the “MASH” units and they were so frequently having to deal with injured kids caught in the crossfire. These medical folks desperately wanted to help, but were having a hard time with it because they weren’t given any of the tools to do so, and they were asking for private help with that. Really gutwrenching position for them to be in on so many levels. We were thrilled to be able tohelp, even a little, with that — and it sounds like you are in the same sort of area where that would really resonate.
Toby at 66 — It’s a great thing to be able to do for these families. Little electrical rewiring projects or rebuilding a creaky porch so the kids don’t get hurt playing on it or even a little plumbing help can make a huge difference. A lot of these families are barely paying rent and getting food — I know some have had to go on food stamps to make ends meet. We owe them much, much better than that.
A little more on our “Law & Order” guy:
My bold. I wager this would be quite pale next to CHS’s online writings…*g*
Educated Plaintiff @ 67 — their issue, I think, is that his hair makes him look like a high school history teacher, circa 1967. I’ve had several private conversations with him(or as private as you can get in the middle of a cocktail fundraiser in an art gallery – but he got close enough so that this deaf person could hear him and read his lips)and I have found him passionate, progressive, with a great brain. And let us not forget – he IS probably the one guy in the House who has been screaming about the corruption and lies of the Administration the longest. He’s been referred to, I recall, as a “dogged critic” and they are not kidding. I think once Maurice gets a leg in his teeth, he will NOT leg go. He’s been a great mentor to my guy, Mike Arcuri – and we’re very proud of Mike’s vote against FISA – and Mike is from Utica, for heaven’s sake..real Repub territory.
On Topic? Just ran across the story… The significant thing is the “retail politics” out of Sen Cornyn’s office….How many votes did this story save for him in the upcoming election? This is the kind of “stuff” that motivates the low information swing voters that we are going to need in ‘08.

Heavy-hitter? Big-ideas man? Well, he did play one on teevee.
However, mole for Nixon does qualify him to be President.
I guess. ;-(
When Bush was running we were told that he has a bunch of advisors who would be behind him. Who would those advisors be for Thompson or Romney, one wonders?
You asked for ‘courage’ out of a man, our ‘chairman’ who, when in face to face hearings with the CEO’s of EXXON, BP, Enron etc. on subjects like gasoline price gouging chronically cowers and capitulates to them.
In fact, the Senator makes it clear to them he’s on their side, not the public’s. In one hearing a few years ago, he only asked one feeble question…”How can ‘we’ make the public conserve more”.
He and Dominici need to be replaced. They’re corrupt.

In the future, please limit comments from linked articles to one or two so that we may save our servers.
Democratic capitulation regarding faithfulness to the constitution (habeas, FISA) and issues such as torture–both during and before its majority in congress, should be scrutinized. I would suggest that just because someone has a “D” after their name, they give a damn about our core values.
I just recieved a fund raising letter from Teddy Kennedy, in which he asks for money, and he asks me to sign a petition regarding the FISA issue. This, after it was the Democrats who collapsed, shamefully, on the issue.
Voters should ask specific candidates where they stand on surveillance of citizens, torture, habeas, and other core constitutional issues regardless of the candidate’s party. If the republican supports the constitutional position, and the democrat does not, don’t be blinded by the ‘D’.
Thank you, Christy! I have forwarded this link to our group.
You know, just the idea that Senator Bingaman is looking at S.559 after our meeting is a great result.
I don’t know what else can happen, but I sure hope some of us are able to get after some of the potential votes against the war. The report on the Surge that W (Cheney) will write may really be the last straw. Thanks to all the bloggers who are dogging that story. And the one about how the public is not buying anything that W is selling any more.
We have to save our country.

If he/she is in Donnelly’s district, that’s in northern Indiana (South Bend area), as am I. I emailed Donnelly a couple of weeks ago and got a form letter (email) responding to something off the topic of my letter. Some staffer’s goof, but in very Red State Indiana, there’s not much hope.

I for one would be willing to contribute to this. Let’s do it!
As a new mexican our junior senator is spineless, gutless, leaderless, and clueless just like the rest of the democrats.
Maybe the biggest folly, of the rove, junior and dick WH years, is the do nothing democrats. cleve
Part of DiFi’s response to me on Gonzo:
She ’shares my concerns’? I don’t think so, or she’d be screaming for impeachment also.
Yesterday, I asked Al Franken how he viewed the recent vote on the FISA bill. He said he thought it was a mistake and that Congress should have stayed in session to work through the details of the bill.

It is hard to believe that time and energy that should be spent on pointing out Repbulican misbehaviors, are now have to be spent on trying to make sure that our own Deomcrat leadership in congress do the right thing. Frankly, I never thought we could ever get to this point.

Could we get a short list of just those senators names and partys?

That was the safe mentioned by Libby’s Secretary in her trial testimony. Apparently they had to get the combination for it to obtain certain “classified” notes that Libby had made regarding his discussion of Plame. These were notes apparently “recalled” after some calenders that he hadn’t hidden showed that he had met with Judy Miller. Fitz knew he had them and so he “had to remember” them.
What else was in that safe? The “self-classified” newspaper clippings (with annotations) of Ambassador Wilson’s column that Cheney obsessively put under the glass top of his desk!
That safe is Cheney’s “Pandoras Box”.
Senator Bingaman’s cloture vote on Alitio set the stage for SCOTUS to rubber stamp every anti-constitutional case that comes before them. But he wants to focus on big items, like meth in rural New Mexico towns. “Heck of a job, Bingy, heck of a job.” Screw you Jeff, you have never taken a controversial stand on anything (substantial) that wasn’t pre-blessed by Domenici. Why are you not calling for Domenici’s resignation for his role in the USA scandal?
Are there any primary challengers out there that would like $10K from me to take out “Domenici Lite” in the next election? Start making noise now!
We need two Democratic Party Senators in New Mexico, and neither one of them should be Jeff Bingaman!
