Tony Snow announced today that he’s leaving his job at the White House because (wait for it) he’s running out of money.
From the Hugh Hewitt Show:
HEWITT: Your intention to go the distance, Tony Snow?
SNOW: No, I’m not going to be…I’ve already made it clear I’m not going to be able to go the distance, but that’s primarily for financial reasons. I’ve told people when my money runs out, then I’ve got to go.
Are you serious?
Mr. Snow, according to our records, that would make you the first person in history to actually go broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American public. Yet another example of how the Bush administration is undermining everything that’s made this country great.
The sound you hear is H. L. Mencken LOL-ing in his grave.

Toodlelooski, Tony!
late night zed!
G’evening, Firepups!
slipping on snow – aggggggg (arms flailing)
B E L L Y F L O P (loud gasps from the crowd)
Announcer guy: Oooooh, that’s gonna leave a mark.
fourth!
close, but no cigar!
gee, don’t they pay Tony a salary?
I let downstairs know, T.
Does this mean little Miss Perino steps up to the plate to take over the gaggles?
Ohhh, we get Dana Pernicious back!
Nobody in the history of the country ever went broke kissing the ass of power. Tony, grow a wart on your tongue.
Suzanne @ 4
OUCH! You ok, Suz?
Well, the Republican consumer-directed healthcare policy has ‘em dropping like flies. Even Snow isn’t immune to the enormous financial toll a major health care problem takes. Ironic, yes, but just as tragic.
I hope he isn’t being cryptic and telling us something about the state of his health. And if it is because of his health, I hope he spends all his time loving his family so as to heal some of the damage done by his lies.
My thoughts and prayers are with him.
Suzanne @ 4
Careful woman!
That’s like the old joke about the blues musician who wins a million dollars in the lottery, and when asked what he’s going to do with the money, says “Keep playing till the money runs out”
Laura Doty @ 11
(sigh) yeah, just an appropriate end for a sucky day (news wise) – i’m ok
TRex, haven’t told you yet, LURRVVED your vlogs. Your human disguise is darling, esp. the glasses.
OldCoastie @ 6
According to Dan Froomkin’s handy White House Salary list for 2007, he’s paid $168,000 per annum, the same as Karl Rove and 17 other top advisors.
OldCoastie @ 6
Yes, but it’s a pitiful $160K a year, and no bloodsucking piece of Republican filth can live on that. Why, healthy Russian babies are at least 80 thousand each on the black market. What else are they supposed to eat?
Suzanne @ 4
(winces in sympathy) owtchies! & i sure hope it wasn’t yellow snow, Suzanne.
Alicia @ 15
I heard that joke but it was about potters. My husband was a potter. And a drummer. Good figure.
Well, the judge in Chatsworth will give that an 8 – it was a stylish bellyflop!
I don’t think it’s about money, and I don’t think he is a fellow victim of the millions who have suffered from the mess of the health care system in this country. I think it’s that he doesn’t want to publicly admit how sick he is.
Sorry if it sounds callous, but imo someone who is a career mouthpiece for lying murderers doesn’t deserve my sympathy. There are many others who deserve it more.
marymccurnin @ 22
That would be-go figure.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 17
*bows deeply*
Thanks!
Hey, Alicia, I left you a comment at your blog!
Yeah, I guess $168K a year is really a come-down for these guys…Maybe worth it for the public face-time, get noticed, go on to a REAL job with ACTUAL money you can live on.
I hope he does go home soon and get well, then have an awakening of conscience, and speak out.
They dont eat the babies, they render them down and use the baby fat to fly.
LoudounLib @ 8
Why, why do I dislike this little Republican so much? It makes me feel cheap and mean. Sigh.
Chris
oddmommy @ 23
When I saw him interviewed on tv by some highly visable reporter type I knew he would retire soon. I do hope he lives a long life and witnesses what he supported.
Oooh, the AP wire is saying there was a bad accident at the Crandall mine. At least ten rescue workers with injuries requiring hospitalization.
if it’s because he’s sick, he’s going to have an awful hard time getting health insurance with an employment change…
Trex – love this line:
“That sound you hear is H. L. Mencken LOL-ing in his grave.”
Dontcha wish Mencken had a blog? He’d fit in at the Lake!
Omnibibulists, unite!
oddmommy @ 23
What makes us different from “them” is recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every person, no matter how egregious the acts of said person. Snow is a total failure at having integrity, truthfulness and ethics; more is the tragedy of that. He has a terminal illness, and he has a family – I hope that he attending to end-of-life issues. Where there is compassion and understanding, there is hope for atonement and redemption.
itwasntme @ 26
Well, let’s see . . .
There’s a certain coal mining company that could use some PR help. Or perhaps the Chinese Toy Manufacturers are looking for a new Press Secretary.
Either one would probably pay much, much more than $168K for a good mouthpiece right now.
That is your gut telling you that these people are soulless liars and not to trust them because the bullshit that comes pouring out of their mouths results in the death and suffering of millions of people all over the world.
So, relish the hate. It’s a healthy reaction to toxic human pustules.
TRex @ 30
I guess Robert Murray’s special little squirrel couldn’t keep the rescue workers safe.
Christine Edmonson @ 28
She’s just so….smirky.
TRex @ 30
(under breath cursing) (more under breath cursing)
Can someone clue me in to the squirrel thing? I’ve missed that part of the story entirely.
TRex @ 35
Speaking of guts, I wonder what Chertoff’s is telling him about Hurrican Dean headed for the Gulf?
TRex @ 35
TRex, it is a sentence like that one that explains why I missed your posts during my move to KC.
TRex @ 35
You are right, and now I feel a bit better. Thanks TRex.
McCain on Jon Stewart
TRex @ 35
No. Acknowledge the hate and move beyond it, or it poisons the one who hates. The antidote for hate is agape, not more hate. I luvs ya, TRex, and I do agree with the incredible levels of frustration, and for me, at least, pretty close to hopelessness and despair, but never hate.
marymccurnin @ 22
The corollary to that one is – Q “How do you make a million dollars playing the blues”
- A “Well, first you take two million dollars, and…”
OldCoastie @ 6
And doesn’t he have government benefits? He ’s maybe going somewhere he can make serious money.
Maybe Tony Snow isn’t worried about the health insurance issue because he doesn’t have much time left. I feel sorry for him and his family.
Christine Edmonson @ 28
’cause she’s another little cheerfully chirping parrot for these hideous monsters. You should not feel bad for seeing her for what she is.
Trex,
Robert Murray and his fantasy squirrel
Apparently when Murray was leaving a mining manager job he encountered a little squirrel that told him to buy his own coal mine. Then he shot and ate the little critter. This is really true except for the shooting and eating part.
marymccurnin @ 47
All snark aside, I do too. He really doesn’t look good right now.
marymccurnin @ 47
Save those prayers for someone who isn’t a Class A enabler of the genocidal jackasses in the White House. Pray for the children of Iraq. Pray for Jane. Pray for the Tillman family.
Tony Snow has connections, more money than he lets on, and a secure seat on the Wingnut Welfare Gravy Train. He’ll be fine.
marymccurnin @ 47
The elephant in the room no one dares mention.
LOL.
‘F*ckin’ right.’
Kudos
;)
wigwam @ 10
could it be the retirement monies were in equities and hedge funds?(ouch)
though not nearly as ouch as the people who were to provide the mortgage cashflow and now are losing their homes.
cross your fingers kids, this doesn’t look good.
N=1 @ 44
Ding!
Put another way, hate the sin, not the sinner.
Was McCain on as a sympathy guest?
oddmommy @ 48
Yes, and it is the air of “oh, we are so open and truth telling, we just don’t understand why you Dems are picking on us.
Chris
OK – let it all out, and I hope you feel better. See y’all around -
Hey, Twain — you out there?
No hard feelings, OK?
*extends hand*
what, Rupert didn’t offer to carry over Tony’s health benefits from his old stint at Faux Snooze? too bad, welcome to the neo-con corporate amerika tony, where YOU foot da bill for dohs health benies.
well, he isn’t the only one bailing…there are at least several more….
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/…..s-to-come/
Hell, pray for Amy Winehouse. At least she’s bringing beauty into the world rather than doing everything in her power to snuff it out.
LoudounLib @ 50
Thank you for stating the obvious. Mary, you are sweet. Loudinlib, you are true.
Of course, he has been a shameless mouthpuppet for George Bush, but, I saw that interview where he was getting his chemotherapy and walked out thanking everyone. I was moved. He’s dying and that’s never fun or pretty and I too feel bad for his family. Regardless.
Hmm, the announcement of Snow’s appointment to press secretary came Apr. 26, 2006. He’s been on the job a bit more than fifteen months, and he’s running out of money?
What the hell has he been doing? Putting all his money into Nigerian email investments? Sock everything into a hedge fund running on vapors? Go long on the fuckin’ Edsel?
How much you want to bet that Murdoch has given him his old job back–and made him one of the regulars on the WSJ editorial page?
Kos has up now the Susan Collins-FDL bru ha ha :-0
TRex @ 51
Yes of course, all of these things. And I still feel compassion for another human being in a desperate condition.
Good night.
re mine: something about another collapse
re Padilla: Human Rights Watch spokesperson tells BBC that Padilla verdict is a huge victory (???) Yes, it proves that our judicial system is perfectly capable of trying terror cases, i.e. no need for Bush’s “enemy combatant” status, military tribunals, Gitmo, solitary confinement, etc. etc. etc.
Hmmm…didn’t see that coming, but she has a point.
re Tony Snow: ~burp~
seriously, I wasn’t being snarky about the health insurance issue… if I were very ill, I would have to find a way to keep working to keep my insurance intact and if I wanted to change jobs for something less stressful, I wouldn’t be able to because I would never be able to get my condition covered…
LoudounLib @ 50
That’s right, he looks awful. And I said this once before, a while back….I wonder how someone staring death in the face can spend his last days doing what he is — again, serving as a lying frontman for people of unabashed evil. It seems like moral issues would take on a new importance for someone in that position. But I don’t know.
burnspbesq @ 59
Of course not – hand back to you. :)
And pray for my husband because he has both diverticulitis and gout. Can’t catch a break, this poor man.
oddmommy – perhaps that is why he left – or maybe it was because of that COS Bolton if you are here 9/1 you are here through the end memo.
Hiya everyone!
Someone said that the person that did the press conf instead of Snow today was younger than me. True?
LoudounLib @ 65
You working early again?
SnarKassandra @ 72
Umm, I think it just seemed that way. :)
N=1 @ 58
I appreciate where you’re coming from, N, but BushCo are MURDERERS. Remember Dr. Maryam and make your moral decisions from there. If Snow was, say, a local businessman who made some shady deals and screwed some people out of their retirement and savings, I would be able to pray for him. If he went out and killed someone driving drunk, I could find it in my heart to forgive him. But what the Bush junta has done to the people of Iraq is a moral atrocity. Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people dead. Not sick. Not coming back to life once the war is over and things settle down. Dead. Maggot food. And for what? Oil money that no one in this country will ever see unless they work for Cheney, KBR, Bechtel, or Exxon.
If there’s a hell…
marymccurnin @ 70
I thought only ladies get diverticulitis.
OT:
Kos on Colbert replay now on west coast.
SnarKassandra @ 72
She’s older, but not wiser.
TRex @ 51
Why, Mistuh Rex — Ah do b’lieve you and I are in agreement on this hyah mattuh.

SnarKassandra @ 72
she certainly tries to look as if she could be a schoolmate of yours – and when presented with a question she doesn’t like, she tries to get away with some flip highschool campaign kind of answer, i keep waiting for her to do the hairflip after.
TRex @ 75
Forgiveness is also a helluva lot easier if there’s even some token remorse expressed by the perp. These guys are proud of themselves.
newtonusr @ 77
Speaking of Kos:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/8/16/193543/237
Hi Cassie! Don’t know about the presser …. i’ve been putting in so many hours at work and commuting that i’m mostly out of the loop with news :-(
Do you start school soon? My hometown school always started the last full week of August. Yech. Much more humane to wait til after Labor Day.
oddmommy @ 23
Tony Snow and his masters are at war against the American people and our Constitution. They will use Tony Snowjob’s illness for PR puposes. But we really know nothing that they do not want us to know. TSP/OIA is a massive espionage program directed against political activists, liberals, and anyone who is not afraid of these fascists. Snowjob is a liar and warmonger. He has plenty of money, 168K/yr.
montag @ 81
Because they don’t have a conscience.
TRex @ 75
I believe there is. I also believe in a wise and just God. I put my faith in His ability to sort it all out, and I don’t make judgments that belong to Him.
Seems likely he’s either technically on leave
of absence from Faux (w/med benefits intact) or that will be his status w/govt, depending on what he needs.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 83
We start a week from Tuesday. But this is the first year we are starting late. Usually it is this week. Aug 15 or 16.
now Huckabee on Colbert. It’s freeper nite.
SunnyNobility @ 87
I’d like to see him get cut off and then have to apply for medicaid! He lies too much

Did McCain come unglued and did they have to carry out pieces of McCain in a basket?

Poor thing is traveling coach with one aide – bless his heart.
TRex @ 61
I do. I love my girl Amy, and hope she can survive herself.
SnarKassandra @ 90
Trying valiantly to stay awake and losing the battle … good night all you excellent firepups.
And TRex? I’m in your corner on the forgiveness issue. When any of ‘em show remorse, i’ll drop some of my scathing contempt, but i’ll leave the forgiveness to god/dess.
Twain @ 92
Hmm. If he doesn’t drop out soon, he’ll be on Greyhound. Might do him some good–see how the genuinely poor live.
marymccurnin @ 70
that I will gladly do. Blessings to both of you.
Peterr @ 18
Plus a choice of healthcare plans with government-mandated benefits.
I’m sure Tony has state of the art health insurance. It ain’t that.
Oh! Poor John McCain! Flying coach?!
Cry.
Me.
A Goddamn.
River.
I wonder if the cheaper synthetic materials in the Coach seats give him a rash on the back of his patrician, war-mongering thighs.
One more work day, and then I’m on “vacation” for a week. Maybe I’ll get lucky. Maybe our firm’s BlackBerry servers will go down and I’ll get at least one day of true vacation.
Time=Money, Money=Time
Tony’s really just running out of time.
There’s always hope of redemption, remember Lee Atwater repented in the end…
montag @ 96
How ’bout another little old stroll through the friendly streets of Baghdad? Does wonders for the cardiovascular system.
If Universal Healthcare were in place in America, Tony Snow’s family wouldn’t be facing bankruptcy because of his catastrophic illness and equally catastrophic medical expenses.
But not to worry.
Tony Snow will resign, enter the right-wing lecture (”talking point” echo chamber) circuit and earn more in one day than it takes him three to four months to earn as Bush’s spokesman.
Unfortunately, many millions of Americans who also have suffered catastrophic health emergencies which have sapped their financial resources do not have such an opportunity.
But I still wish Tony well, as well as his family. May he beat the cancer, and live to a ripe old age.
montag @ 81
OK – thinking on this a bit -and here’s the best I can do in words:
forgiveness isn’t about the person who committed the original offense. Forgiveness allows the one wronged to move on, to bring peace to himself or herself, and to be free of hate. Conditional forgiveness doesn’t work, either. The paradox is that when you forgive someone (distinct from forgetting the act), you are the beneficiary. The person who committed the act need never know about the forgiveness. It restores the soul and spirit of the one wronged. It’s about the most difficult thing to do, but practice makes it easier, albeit not easy.
To actively hate is to bring hurt to yourself and to hold it inside you. It’s a gift you give yourself, and in so doing, you become better for it.
If I was with you all in person, I’d be giving hugs and handing out tissues and just being present. Don’t know how to translate that into words.
I know from where I speak on this. To condemn someone else is to condemn myself. To act as the one who wronged me acted is to wrong myself.
And a final thought – anger is very different than hate. But hate leads to nowhere good for the soul, where anger can be cleansing and used to spur reparative action. Hate always destroys, and it always acts on the one who hates – TRex, you described the results of hate very well. Don’t wish it upon yourself and your FDL mates.
/End Peanuts scripture scene. Dim lights. Exit stage right. *g* Sorry – there needs to be a little levity – even if it’s really bad and rank humor.
marymccurnin @ 70
Totally best wishes.

fingers and toes crossed for you to have an undisturbed vacation – maybe the airline will lose your crackberry for you :)
TRex @ 100
I’ll have to look to see if he’s scratching himself during one of his next conniption fits.
All I want is five minutes alone in a room with Jim Balsilie.
Just. Five. Minutes.
oddmommy @ 68
Lee Atwater had a deathbed conversion, regarding the evil he was responsible for. Sadly, I don’t see much of that from today’s GOP chickenhawks. Shame on them.
montag @ 91
No, he said he’d close Gitmo and never ever allow America to torture prisoners. He’d give gitmo prisoners their day in court. Jon was sort of begging him to be the ‘old’ John McCain instead of what he has become. Even though he said the right things, he wasn’t effective. I don’t know why.
As a side note…he looked 10 yrs younger. Lots of Botox, I believe.
What he means is he knows he doesn’t have much time left on earth, and he wants to
a) get a large advance to write a
tell-nothingtell-all White House insider book; andb) take on lucrative speaking engagements.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 110
Wish he could have talked with Rove before he departed.
I’m out for a while. Need dinner, beverages, and cash. Anyone need anything while I’m out?

Well I have seen my husband in drag once around mardi gras. …..
Diverticulitis can effect either sex.
About the Kos article, do we really have over a half million separate readers/week? Or is that just hits?
Shadowstalker @ 122
How can you tell the difference?
You’re right, of course. To harbor hate in the heart is corrosive to the soul. I don’t hate Tony Snow and I guess in the final analysis, I do feel for him and his family and hope that God reaches into their lives and brings them peace.
I’m just talking out of my ass because I am very, very angry about what these people have done and what they continue to do in the name of the United States.
Deep breaths.
Okay, walk it off.
ok, here’s a little comedy relief, for anyone who’s as old as me and remembers the classic Bugs Bunny cartoons……there’s one where a character has the good and bad “consciences” on his shoulders, an angel with a harp and a demon with a pitchfork……the angel keeps piously urging him to do the right thing, and the demon snarlingly arguing the other way……finally the angel gets pissed and says “Ah, shaddup!” and hits the demon over the head with his harp.
Shadowstalker @ 122
take a look at the sitemeter
Mary, I figured Suz and the mods would maybe know…they’ve got that site tracker thing a-goin’ on.
burnspbesq @ 114
Dinner, beverages, and cash sounds great to me. Can I ride shotgun? How big is your car?
OT probably. Today when I logged on to MSN they had 3 news headlines which I read quickly.
One was a report stating that small groups may band together to promote their radicalism, from a
Police Report. Those aren’t the exact words but that’s essentially what the headline was.
When I got on MSN later that headline was gone. I’d wanted to read the article. Did
anyone else see/hear anything about this?
All the talk of blogs (KOS, FDL…) lately got me thinking maybe they mean the internet crowd.
NYT saying 9 miners injured, 2 seriously.
((((TRex)))))(((((Constitution)))))(((((Foul-mouthed, fem blogger, fringe fanatics on FDL))))) *g*
burnspbesq @ 101
Turn the sucker off.
Twain @ 130
Does it give any indication as to what might have happened?
Shadowstalker @ 127
I didn’t realize that the time a body is on FDL could be kept.
Deep breaths
Okay, walk it off.
I’m with you all the way — when will anger NOT be my middle name?
OT but I believe Rove figured out a way to boost Bush’s approval rating. Jenna’s getting married. Excuse me for being cynical, but I give that marriage less than 6mos after Bush leaves office. It’s a bright shiny object designed to give Bush something to talk about other than Iraq, healthcare, Social Security, the economy, Iran, Osama, Rove, Abu, Scooter….Well, you get the picture.
On the bright side, maybe we won’t ever have to hear again about the freeking optimistic rug.
TRex @ 133
No, not yet.
good news!
Feds pay $80,000 to pair arrested for wearing anti-Bush T-shirts
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The federal government has agreed to pay $80,000 to a Texas couple arrested and charged with trespassing in 2004 after they refused to cover up homemade T-shirts with anti-Bush slogans.
The American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of Nicole and Jeffery Rank of Corpus Christi, Texas, announced the settlement on Thursday.
The Ranks were handcuffed, removed from the July 4, 2004, rally at the state Capitol and held in police custody for between one and two hours.
“This settlement is a real victory not only for our clients but for the First Amendment,” said Andrew Schneider, executive director of the ACLU of West Virginia. “As a result of the Ranks’ courageous stand, public officials will think twice before they eject peaceful protesters from public events for exercising their right to dissent.”
An order closing the case was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Charleston.
“We are pleased that this matter has been concluded,” said White House spokesman Blair Jones. “The parties understand that this settlement is a compromise of disputed claims to avoid the expenses and risks of litigation and is not an admission of fault, liability, or wrongful conduct.”
The recent revelation of the existence of a presidential advance manual made it clear that the government tries to exclude dissenters from the president’s presidential appearances, the ACLU said in a prepared statement. “As a last resort,” the manual says, “security should remove the demonstrators from the event.”
The front of the Ranks’ T-shirts bore the international symbol for “no” superimposed over the word “Bush.” The back of Nicole Rank’s T-shirt said “Love America, Hate Bush.” On the back of Jeffery Rank’s T-shirt was the message “Regime Change Starts at Home.”
Jeffery Rank, who was a Republican who disagreed with Bush, said he found it ironic that the government manual encourages event organizers to use young Republicans as “rally squads to oppose messages like ours at presidential appearances.” Rank has since changed his party affiliation, the ACLU notes in its release.

That’s how I see it, N=1. I do get furious, but I learned that I attach myself to the object of my hatred. I forgive for myself and my own freedom, not theirs. I’m not that spiritually evolved yet.
But, curiously enough, I’ve found through experience that if I pray for someone who really, really riles me – I don’t have to like it or even mean it, just do it – things improve for me somehow. Don’t know why it works; it just does (for me at least).
I love looking at the site tracker, not that I understand much of it. But somebody on here is from good old Success, right across the highway from Licking. (both in MO) I get a kick out of seeing the variety of places we’re logging in from.

See you in a bit.
Crony Snowball (”Clerks” reference) has an entire career based on being a smartass. He was a condescending, mean-spirited ass as a TV snooze rancor, and he has continued in that vain as Shrub Spokesliar.
When he talks about running out of money, I simply take that as him being a smartass and belittling the “common man.” I think Crony and his “friends” got together later, patted themselves on the backs over cigars and scotch, and gave alot of “Attaboyz” to Snowball for that one.
Twain @ 148
The only seismic activity is in the brain of Mr. Murray as the two molecules hit one another when he squints his shifty eyes.

I had heard from ..somewhere.. I don’t know where, that Snow had cancer and the money he’s referring to means that. Yes, I would think he would want to -keep- his job if he were strapped but i’m just passing some unsubstantiated info.
Of course now I’m waiting for the announcement of Barney resigning as First Dog.

Of course he does. Act of gawd and all that stuff.
Speaking of seismic activity, Mr Persi called last night to tell me not to worry when I heard about the earthquake that hit his current workplace, the Solomon Islands, last night. If he hadn’t told me about it I never would have known. Mother Nature certainly is a grumbly old girl right now.

Hubby is a first responder so he has to stay, but if it veers north me, the kiddos and the dog are hitting the road. This time I am taking my 84 YO MIL with me if I have to tie her to the roof. She would not leave for Katrina, and ended up at Oschner hospital for several days before heading to family in Mississippi. I do not wish a storm on anyone, but we certainly don’t need it.

Repeat the message, catapult the propaganda. The press repeats the same thing.
I Murray said it was caused by little green doctors pounding at his back these asswipes would report it.

P.S. The Daily Show had a clip of S. Malveaux stating that “a turdblossom is a Texas flower that grows on dung, so it is a complement”….
What the fuck planet am I living on?
So what’s shrub gonna do? I mean, Mouth of Sauron there is going to go work for somebody who’ll actually remember to pay him, and Karl Saruman’s quitting to spend more time beating his kids into better rethugs. Who’s going to be the public face of the WH? A snarling Dick?

M’self, I didn’t mention hate. I said it would be better if there were some remorse shown–it would make some forgiveness easier.
Here on earth, in the real world, justice is the first essential. Then, maybe, a little mercy.
Without justice, first, forgiveness simply enables bad behavior. These people have been the source and the instigators of great harm and destruction, and to forgive them for it–absent justice–is the surest way to ensure that such harm and destruction will not only continue, but increase.

hello all from casa del spook!
Been a busy day here, getting the animals into their stalls, telling the rabbits only two…only two…only two..
but now the waters are receding and it looks I and my family get to repopulate the earth after all, although there will clearly be differences.
For example, the dove brought back not an olive branch but a dry martini with both and olive and a pickled onion. so things have improved somewhat since the last time (little too much vermouth, tho…)

Federal ID plan raises privacy concerns
(CNN) — Americans may need passports to board domestic flights or to picnic in a national park next year if they live in one of the states defying the federal Real ID Act.
The act, signed in 2005 as part of an emergency military spending and tsunami relief bill, aims to weave driver’s licenses and state ID cards into a sort of national identification system by May 2008. The law sets baseline criteria for how driver’s licenses will be issued and what information they must contain.

Where in Mississippi? My mom and dad’s people are all from Gulfport/Biloxi area. The house my granny lived in for ages made it through Camille with nary a scratch, and only minor damage from Katrina. Funny thing, just a simple little place with a hurricane fence around it. less than 1/2 mile from the beach, and hardly any damage from 2 monster storms.
Suprised some of the Repubes haven’t used one of their favorites, and called it “seismic chatter.”

seriously, if I were an armaggedon type, I would be really encouraged by these crazed weather events…..it’s like Nature, God, or Whoever, is rejecting what we have done to this earth……and is going to vomit us out in some way….
The Big Barf theory. You heard it here, folks.
I hate this. Yes, HATE. Tell me, how does one prove he’s a citizen if he doesn’t have his ID on him. It will be oh so easy to arrest anyone. And I HATE the idea that someone can stop me and ask for ID when I’m not doing anything wrong. This is very very bad. And my anger is aimed at anyone in this administration. And THAT is why I have such difficulty feeling too sorry for Tony Snow.

It’s really just a chain-link style, but down here they call it a hurricane fence. It reall does catch alot of debris that might otherwise end up in your house. Mom went to a reunion not long after Katrina and drove by her old home, fence was still up, and all kinds of trash and debris piled up along the fence. The neighbor’s house was in the middle of the street, so they were unable to drive down the street, ahd to park and walk in.

I feel no sympathy for him. Just because he’s dying doesn’t make him a remotely decent human being.
Considering the millions that have been thrown at him for his career as a liar, the idea that he’s running out of money is a crock.
His statements just underline his corruption and lack of morality. On what planet does the moral, decent human being say, “I’m leaving my well paid government job because I’m avid to go back to earning the mega-bucks I used to get and walked out on”?
His earning days, at any salary scale, are over. But, no, he has to “spin” because the truth–about anything–has always been repugnant to him.
No more money for you, Tony, and the millions you earned WILL cover your medical expenses. Medical expenses only bankrupt the poor and middle class, dummy, not people with $10-20 million. Your heirs will be left with more than enough millions to carry on your tradition of right-wing dishonesty and shame.

Maybe what Tony was really thinking was that he only has a short time to put aside some real money for the family. At least that makes sense.
This is just weird. Look at all the Rep Reps. deciding not to run again over at TPM. Rove, Snow….High profile Kool Aid drinkers leaving before the party gets to that looking around the room to see who’s as drunk as you and the answer is “nobody” kind of moment……McCain in coach….You could really envision a moment in the spring where the Reps look like the Enron executive reunion at the Houston Holiday Inn, a lot of empty chairs with middle managers who want to talk about the good old days…..

Oh that May march 1971 it was wonderful. We jumped in fountains and marched our socks off. I was photographed by the FBI and exposed by a friend’s dad who was a federal employee. His dad warned us that we would soon be arested.

I remember a high school friend who was a straight shooter.
There was another local kid with a bad illness and they were having a fundraiser for him.
I asked my friend if he was going to the fundraiser and he said no. I asked why and he said.
Look just because he is sick doesn’t make him any less of an asshole.
I don’t wish ill upon Tony Snow but I’ll save my sympathy for someone who wasn’t so complicit in turning America into a shell of a democracy while looking me in the eye and lying on a daily basis.

One of the things I’ve learned from Dick
Cheney is the liberating aspect of low ratings: when everyone already hates you, you can do whatever you want, without caring a fig what people think. This principle applied to surveillance paranoia is similar: they’re already scooping up everything anyway, they can data mine you back to the Dark Ages, and they can use total police-state powers on you at will. They already know everything, and as they don’t need a warrant anyway, you might as well say what you will.
World markets are stinking worse than Rove’s skivvies.

And until we have money to hire the campaign manager we want I’m the go to guy for everything right now. Not complaining here, I’m loving every minute of it.
The difference between Hebrew and Yiddish is greater than the difference between Portugese and Italian.
Yiddish is a Germanic language, spoken in the ghettos of eastern Europe and most resembling Middle German. Since Jewish religious practice requires literacy in Hebrew, it was naturaly to write with the Hebrew alphabet although, the letters have slightly different denotations.
Modern Yiddish incorporates 30% Hebrew, mostly words relating to religious practice, some Russian, Polish, and other languages.
To complicate matters there are two major dialects of Hebrew, namely Ashkenazi and Sephardic. Most American Jews are Ashkenazi in heritage, i.e. coming from Eastern Europe, where the vernacular was Yiddish. However, since the formation of the modern state of Israel, (where Sephardic Hebrew was spoken since time immemorial) most Jews regardless of heritage use Sephardic pronounciations in Hebrew.
There is another Jewish language for Sephardic vernacular, called Ladino.
The word “Yiddish” means “Jewish” and can be used to refer to the language, a person (singular noun, Yid) or a culture.
Gotta run!
RonD @ 285

Every single time I have watched Tony Snow conduct a press briefing I have wanted to throw something as my TV. That said, he looks very bad. Perhaps he needs to fill up the kitty to leave his family in better financial shape. As much as he infuriates me, I can’t blame him for wanting to provide as best as he can for his wife and kids. No matter who it is, cancer is a dreadful desease and those that are afflicted deserve our good wishes because cancer not only affects the patient, but the entire family as well.

A personal favorite.
Ohmygosh Tony says he’s running out of money. Par for the course, just more crap that he expects Joe Average to swollow.
I wrote this to Jane:
The man has cancer, probably terminal. Even with the best health care program, the costs of treatment are enormous. Have a little compassion for the man and his family. These raving comments, joyous about the impending death and financial ruin of another human being, are exactly what feeds into the mainstream media spin about our community. Hate the sins (and there are plenty to hate in this case), but don’t hate the sinner.
Jane replied that she thought my comments were “mischaracterizing and patronizing.”
Here are excerpts from the first 150 comments on the Tony Snow story. You folks be the judges.
Douglas
Excerpts:
“Sorry if it sounds callous, but imo someone who is a career mouthpiece for lying murderers doesn’t deserve my sympathy.” There are many others who deserve it more.
{From TRex] *** relish the hate. It’s a healthy reaction to toxic human pustules.
“When any of ‘em show remorse, i’ll drop some of my scathing contempt, but i’ll leave the forgiveness to god/dess.”
” Snowjob is a liar and warmonger. He has plenty of money, 168K/yr.”
“Nobody in the history of the country ever went broke kissing the ass of power. Tony, grow a wart on your tongue.”
“Yes, but it’s a pitiful $160K a year, and no bloodsucking piece of Republican filth can live on that.”
“I’d like to see him get cut off and then have to apply for medicaid! He lies too much.”
oddmommy @ 23
I agree. He looks pretty bad lately, and I think the chemo is taking its inevitable toll. I think he’s leaving because he is really sick.
Douglas @ 309
You’re a fine one to be lecturing people on respect, printing emails without permission.
Those comments were critical of Tony Snow because of his job performance, not his illness. The fact that you think he is immune from the former because of the latter is quite patronizing.
So, I was going to let enough alone, but I was disturbed by the following interchange with Jane. “Fair comment” of course allows me to cite from Jane’s emails to me.
[Jane] The critiques of Tony Snow were about his job performance and not his illness. The suggestion that he should be treated with kid gloves on the former because of the latter is patronizing and dehumanizing. And your presumption to publish my email without premission is really, really disrespectful.
Have a nice trip to my auto-trash.
[Jane] You do not have permission to reprint my emails. The critiques of Tony Snow were rendered about his job performance, and you seem to think he deserves kid gloves on that front because of his illness which is thoroughly patronizing.
Smear your dehumanizing pity somewhere else.
[Douglas] wrote: I’ve had cancer. My mother died of it, and I just helped nurse a good friend through the end stages of her cancer. My problems and yours are not the issue here. I cannot believe that you can actually say that the comments I quoted are “respectful of the fact that [Tony Snow is] a functioning human being despite his illness.” How does your description apply to those who call him a “toxic human pustule”, a “career mouthpiece for lying murderers”, and a “fascist[ ] *** liar and warmonger.”
Certainly there were other comments which express sympathy and the ability to separate the human being from his actions. I guess my larger point is that this community has some growing up to do. We feed right into our enemies hands when we condone childish, hateful, gloating comments about a dying man.
Best,
Douglas
ps: I posted some of our last exchange on the site comments, but I think I will now keep our exchanges private. I want you to know that I read you and DailyKos and Firedoglake and many other rightthinking blogs faithfully. I love that they are out there; I agree with most of what they contain; and I fervently want them to fluorish.
[Jane]
Respectful of the fact that he’s still a functioning human being despite his illness.
Your attitude, however, is patroinizing [sic] and dehumanizing. As a cancer patient I’d invite you to throw a pity party for someone else, I’ll choose life, thank you very much.
[Douglas] [Responding to Jane’s assetion that I was patronizing and was mischaracterizing the comments on her site]
Well, now. These are from the first 150 comments to the Tony Snow piece. How would you characterize them? [excerpts followed, including some quoted above]
