Facebook has a feature where you get notified when someone identifies you in a photo. I got an alert when I was checking my email this morning and went to make sure it wasn’t anything that might keep me from running for office some day. You know how it is.
This is the photo, taken by Matt Ortega at the Drinking Liberally party on Thursday night at YearlyKos and I think that this shot of a random party moment tells you more about the real convention than a thousand WaPo hit pieces ever could.
There’s Rafael Collazo from Brown Planet on the far left, Shireen Mitchell of Digital Sistas in the foreground, Jessica Valenti, Amanda Marcotte, and that’s me peering out from behind Amanda and litbrit just to the left of me. You will notice that the “middle aged white males” are only conspicuous here in their absence.
Granted, there was a certain contingent of Suits at YKos, the sort of Matt Bai crowd. They mostly seemed to keep off to themselves, though, doing their White Men in Suits thing, buzzing around the candidates and their coteries like bottle-flies, trying to climb up the arseholes of other White Men in Suits, as is their wont.
The real convention looked more like this, and these are the kinds of scenes that people like Fox News and the DLC really don’t want you to see. They’re making every effort to portray the Netroots community as a bunch privileged, segregated, ideological whackos, when in fact the absolute opposite is true. At YearlyKos, I watched a polyethnic, gender-diverse, smart, talented bunch of young Americans work, drink, laugh, and hope together.
This is the real face of the New Democratic Party.
More than half of Americans between 17 and 29 years old — 54 percent — say they intend to vote for a Democrat for president in 2008. They share with the public at large a negative view of President Bush, who has a 28 percent approval rating with this group, and of the Republican Party. They hold a markedly more positive view of Democrats than they do of Republicans.
There’s a new Democratic Majority coming. Young men and women from all different races and backgrounds, all different orientations and outlooks, all different religions and belief systems. And this time, they’re all traveling together.
This is the last thing the Loyal Order of DC Fossils wants to see cresting the horizon because they know, when all the “minorities” band together, we’re the majority, and to them that’s a deeply dangerous cultural awareness. And it’s that very knowledge that the roly-poly little Caligulas of the Beltway élite have been fighting tooth and nail since the dawn of the rich, white Reagan 80’s.
It is in their best interests to try and turn us on each other and drive us apart. Bear that in mind when you read every word of Netroots coverage in the mainstream media. They don’t entirely know what we’re doing yet, but what they do know is that they desperately, desperately want us to stop.

g’evening everyone
TRex, one would think those DC fossils would be paying attention to a speaking 60 foot therapod (your disguise for YK was perfect btw)
Yes! My last one was a Fitz it so long ago.
nicely done, helpless dancer – be sure to let downstairs know you got the zed – nicely :)
crawford, texas is a scorched shi*hole…samantha bee
What kind of fuckery is this?!?!
Just remember…the netroots and the MSM are not natural enemies. It is only so because the MSM have sold out.
TRex!
petwrecker @ 5
And remember, she’s Canadian. This is polite.
single digits?
Hey Margot – still keeping that foot elevated I see.
Suzanne @ 2
Towel, Ma Cheri!!!
msmolly @ 9
Double digits. One on each hand.
Why so hostile against middle aged white men in suits???
We aren’t all the enemy, you know…
I can’t see the photo. Do we have to be “friends” first?
msmolly @ 9
good golly – msmolly got single digits (sorry, couldnt resist)
Ghod Dammit Suzanne, WARN me when you’re gonna do one of those! (squeezes water out of his ectoplasmic tote bag, grumping)
Evening, kids. Got multiple info streams coming in right now. Earthquake in Peru, possibly up to a hundred dead. There is a tsunami warning. Hawaii just got hit with another earthquake, and the Antilles islands are under a hurricane watch.
It’s Wrath of God night on the AP wire, apparently.
TRex @ 17
go battle the wires, trex – i’ll keep em occupied in your absence
How bad was the EQ in HI? are Bob and CT alright?
They can’t stop us now.
Suzanne, yes’m.
Nice to see you guys for a little bit.
TRex @ 17
Good grief. Well wishes to everybody out there bordering the Pacific.
“And it’s that very knowledge that the roly-poly little Caligulas of the Beltway élite have been fighting tooth and nail since the dawn of the rich, white Reagan 80’s.”
I could swear he’s talking about Karl “The Low Cunning of High Heeled Boys” Rove, but what do I know?
Good god man! Doesn’t the netroots realize that continuing on the current course could unconditionally alter the status quo! For god’s sake, things could CHANGE! Have you no couth!!!!!
USGS Hawaii quake page shows it was a little one
althespook @ 19
It didn’t sound like a bad one, less powerful than the one earlier in the week.
TBogg is there helping the Lovely and Talented Casey get settled in for college. I hope everything is okay.
Suzanne @ 25
Good. Just watched “Earthquake Storms” on the science channel with my dad. scary stuff.
TRex, ya know my facebook is current, why can’t I see the Photo???
looks like it was an aftershock to the bigger one night before last (or was it last night) hawaii has certainly had more than its share of mother nature this week
althespook @ 27
I love the science channel – watch it or pbs most of the time.
althespook @ 19
A little Soggy, but, in there for the long haul…!!! ;-)
So do you think that all those fresh young voters are going to take a shine to Hillary? I can see them running scared from Mitt, Rudy and the rest, but we’d better not take it for granted that they’ll be anything more than ‘likely’ to vote for a Democratic presidential candidate.
Who’s the guy with the lamp shade on his head? Random Shriner?
TRex, I see the photo at the top of the post just fine.
msm i think fears the netroots – information is given filter-free and as a rule facts are checked at least its my experience reading blogs progressive blogs that is….and all have an outlet for one’s views – plus msm readership and viewership is down – they dont like it
Suzanne @ 30
FYI: Tsumai warning cancelled by NOAA, per BBC minutes ago if I heard correctly.
Great post. I am a middle-aged white male. However, I don’t have the prototypical white male views on most things. For instance, I don’t watch FOX. I can’t stand NASCAR. And I tend to think Bush has run our country into the ground.
Wait a minute…that doesn’t really make me stand out anymore…
gbear @ 32
Well, now, that’s a good point. Senator Clinton does not appear to be the most popular of the Democratic hopefuls around here (not by a long shot, actually), but I won’t assume that’s a reflection of reality as a whole. On the other hand, I also won’t assume that she has the nomination sewn up, either.
EPU’d from selise two thread back: (love you selise!)
selise says:
August 15th, 2007 at 6:02 pm
sadly, capitulation by congress on iran has been an ongoing story for the 110th.
1. in march – pulling the iran language from the iraq supplemental funding bill, as jane reminds us of.
2. speaker pelosi promised a stand alone bill as a replacement for this action – i even had it directly from my representative (jim mcgovern) that she had made this promise.
3. no stand alone bill, that i’m aware of, was ever brought to the house floor. however, in may, we did get a later amendement proposed to a defense authorisation bill – one that failed with 100 democrats voting against it and speaker pelosi not voting.
4. h.con.r.21 – the house’s version of the lieberman iran amendment. a thoroughly irresponsible bill based on lies. passed on 6/21(background here and here) bottom line – virtually the entire house of representatives (only 2 “no” votes – kucinich and paul) voted to ask the UN security council to charge ahmadinejad with “violating the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and United Nations Charter” based on basically 1) his calling for the genocide of israelis and 2) because “Iran has aggressively pursued a clandestine effort to arm itself with nuclear weapons”.
only problem is that the first is a lie (mistranslations) and there is no evidence for the second (see IAEA). when kucinich tried to enter into the congressional record the correct translation, he was prevented from doing so.
…and that’s just the house
gbear @ 32
The MSM has been running Huckabee up the flag pole, hard, lately. I’m surprised he isn’t bruised. But he’s starting to look like the choice of the powers that be for an opposition to the unwashed masses of the rabid left. I don’t think the old boy network was ever completely comfortable with a member of the church of the latter day saints, regardless of the fact that Mitt looks so damn presidential in that sainted “Dutch” fashion.
shooogarp @ 38
Well, I’m a white male and closer to middle age than not…but since we’re the same age, I can point out that TRex is as well. Don’t take it too personally.
TRex @ 17
Tbogg is in Hawaii this week and he doesn’t sound happy.
Suzanne @ 25
It happened here and I didn’t even notice it…!!! Vas Ist Los…??? *g*
The screaming harpies on the right have never understood this dynamic, Trex. They’ve always relied upon the money of the privileged few to fund their attacks on blacks, women, gays, latinos, librul white boys (like me), anyone and everyone that doesn’t subscribe to the notion that authority must be respected, whether it’s from a religious stance, a poltical stance or a social stance.
I am reminded of my time in the service, in particular one episode that involved a bunch of us drinking beer and talking shit in the barracks at Hickam AFB.
There happened to one black fellow named Hank who was friends with everyone, I mean everyone. Excellent at his job, good airman, good man all around.
He was the only fellow in the room who happened to have brown skin, and while he was present, he was lauded, loved by everyone in the room.
Once he left however, said goodnight and shuffled off to his room, it was no more than two minutes before the word n*gg*r made its appearance.
Shocked, I immediately spoke up in anger, claiming, “now wait just a goddamned minute, Hank was here for two hours and no one, not one goddamned soul in this room had the nerve to use the most vicious racial slur in our vocabulary, and yet, when Hank leaves, all of the sudden it’s ok?”
They looked at me like I was from fucking Pluto. It never dawned on them that Hank, their friend and comrade was a n*gg*r, they couldn’t fathom the idea, after all, Hank was intelligent, funny, a true smartass, and, well, “not a nigger, we mean, you know, like the other n*gg*rs.”
That’s what the right excels at, taking advantage of the ignorance of the simple-minded and the fearful.
MOD NOTE: *Edited to allow through filters
selise Part 2:
continuing from my 119 above.
the roll call vote on the iran amendment to H.R.1585, was 136-288, with 13 not voting.
but here’s the kicker – how the democrats in the house voted on this amendment: 127 for, 99 against, 5 not voting.
here’s what they voted against:
DeFazio (OR)/Paul (TX)/Hinchey (NY)/Lee (CA) amendment #31
The amendment clarifies that no previously enacted law authorizes military action against Iran. It also prohibits funding authorized by the bill or in any other act from being used to take military action against Iran without specific authorization from Congress unless there is a “national emergency created by an attack by Iran upon the United States, its territories or possessions or its armed forces” (language taken directly from the War Powers Resolution, P.L. 93-148).
the problem is much bigger than the blue dogs.
And us white guys who aren’t threatened by them, too!
I think that my membership in the White Male Elite is somewhat obviated by the fact that I am a professed cocksucker and proud Sodomite.

yes but it’s consensual when you do it. for the rethuglican white male elite, that takes all the fun out of it. (see recent news stories for details.)
EvilDrPuma @ 12
Hmmm….middle digit, perhaps. Aimed appropriately, of course.
*cues REM song* Mebbe Rove’s
brainego shifting closer to the Pacific Ring of Fire is throwing off the balance of the tectonic plates? In the better-late-than-never file, I finally wrote up a letter to fax to my reps (S. Brown and Kaptur) related to the FISA bill. They both voted against, but I’m still writing:
“I am writing first and foremost to thank you for your courageous vote against the FISA bill earlier this month. I can’t adequately describe the sinking feeling in my stomach when the votes were announced, or the relief I felt when I looked at the roll call and saw that both my Democratic representatives in Congress had voted “nay.”
My second purpose is to urge you to continue to resist attempts by the Republicans and the White House to subvert the Constitution. Those Democrats who stood up to the bullying of Republicans in Congress and the media are going to be especially important in ensuring that the Democratic leaders in Congress do not make yet another critical error in the future, as they did in even allowing the FISA bill to be voted upon.
Please, impress upon the leadership that this cannot keep happening. The rights of the citizens of this country, and the desperate hope so many people are placing in the Democratic party to provide a law-abiding, honest and responsible alternative to rampant Republican lawlessness, are depending on the Democratic leadership in Congress, and on you. Don’t let us down.”
The earthquake was a 7.5 located in Lima,Peru, and poses no danger of tsunami to the west coast. But I feel for the folks in Lima, if the death total is 100 now, with that magnitude, it will certainly rise.
The neocons want to know what everyone in the picture did with his/her bathrobe. Really good lighting, too, for a basement, they’d say. :)
Oh, there’s lotsa cocksucking among The Elite — but the first rule of Skull and Bones is don’t talk about Skull and Bones.
TRex @ 47
Dang, TRex, ya gotta kiss and tell, eh???
There’s a new Democratic Majority coming. Like a REALLY big tent?
TRex @ 47
Eh, worry not. Every white, middle-aged, upper level management talking head I’ve ever know was a cocksucker. The only difference is the lack of profession.
TeddySanFran @ 55
Or cocksucking.
EvilDrPuma @ 39
I’m hoping that she doesn’t have it sewn up yet either; there’s still WAY too much that needs to be talked about. But the way that the MSM has her in the spotlight (the good, the bad and the ugly) to the exclusion of almost everyone else does not bode well.
Do you think that Karl has the Ann Richards lesbian thyme ready for Hillary?
TRex @ 47
Chuckle. And I’m an unemployed recently-minted PhD. “Elite” is not exactly my pet name for myself.
marymccurnin @ 61
and for those of us that speak English…?
Wow. Jon Stewart just ripped the author of “Cheney”, Cheney himself, and Fox; 3 new A-holes…I gotta see this on video…all about the Quagmire video…
Smackdown, slamdunk, kablambo.
.
As a foul mouthed feminist (I am in fact a male who distains vernacular)…
Fuck em
TRex @ 48
Plus you’re 2 months in arrears on your dues. If you don’t watch out, you’re gonna get downgraded to the Male Elite section and then you’ll have to supply your own peanuts.
Samantha Bee is Canadian?… I did not know that.
and for a second I thought that the U.S. had imported the left-of-center political party of Canada… the New Democratic Party – NDP… which would make the most progressive Democratic candidates south of the border clutch their pearls and howl in abject horror… (with perchance the exception of Dennis Kucinich)
Here’s a thought…not a pleasant one…but unpleasant only because of its content. Throughout history, there have been technology changes that caught everyone by surprise. Anyone who reads Barbara Tuchman will understand that WWI went so badly for both sides, because very few of the military understood the impact of the following:
The automobile
The Airplane
The Machine gun
That’s the unpleasant part.
The fascinating thing is that the mainstream media have so missed the development of the Internet, YouTube, RSS, and a number of other things we’re going to see in a year or two, and so underestimated the power of anyone with a cellphone and a built in camera, that they are hopelessly lost. There’s a lot of stuff Fox doesn’t want you to see. But they don’t have a choice. We’re basing a whole company on it (and not on manufacturing the technology). There are, for instance, methods of storing video for rebroadcast that don’t take up gigs of space and bloated amounts of bandwidth. Streaming is getting faster and faster. I give the msm papers no more than 4 years. And we are here first. So take heart folks. There’s gonna be a lot of heat, and it’s ’cause they don’t understand us, and they’re afraid of us. And they should be.
Have you noticed that the rhetoric against the liberal sites has risen dramatically in the last few weeks? O’Reilly, Collins, Harold Ford. They are desperately trying to paint us as evil. Or as O’Reilly calls us: “Leftwingnazihatesites”
Keep in mind the Rove philosophy: If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.
i am a white middle-aged man.
i did my part at Yearly Kos.
i didn’t go.

NOT that the pinheads from WaPo would ever notice.

(well he might not notice, but he’ not a pinhead.)
gbear @ 60
It would be instructive to know how many Democratic voters still pay attention to what the MSM has to say.
I would have to agree that young voters might not flock to HRC. Despite leaning democratic, they have been subjected to years of savage anti Clinton propaganda during some of their more impressionable years. Some of it is bound to stick. Even if unconciously.
Edited to correct a BooBoo
gbear @ 60
Indeed! There’s a particular suspicious bit of theatre starting to take shape and SOMEONE has caste Ms. Clinton in a staring role. No doubt she’ll be mentioned in any conversation, but I’m with you in believing that the broad spectrum of Democratic choices right now needs to be utilized to discuss all the issues; rather than just focusing on those that play well for the Hillary camp. The damn netroots don’t seem to be playing that game though.
DRST@52
Notice that Pelosi is apparently afraid to go home.
okay, i’m not middle aged, UNLESS i live to be

TeddySanFran @ 83
The current lie being repeated often: Karl Rove is a genius.
God I’m sooooo tired of that shit! That’s like saying the guy who invented the Home Shopping Network is a genius. Just because someone managed to capitalize on the idiocy of the consumer public doesn’t make them a genius. It makes them an opportunist. Karl Rove, boy opportunist…maybe the greatest one since Caligula…has that already been mentioned tonight?
and let’s get one thing straight: what, exactly, IS “middle age”?? Let’s talk NUMBERS here.
Inquiring minds about to turn 45 wanna know……..
AZ Matt @ 91
Normal, young, male and female people of multiple skin tones. Bill O’Reilly wants you to believe that all these people are white, wealthy anti-Semites, except the Jewish ones, and they’re racists.
Or something. Who knows what the fuck is going on in that overheated strip of ganglia he calls a brain?
EvilDrPuma @ 94
Oh!
George Bush read 94 books last year, according to Karl Rove.
What a thinker.

That is big assumption that Bill’O even has a brain.
DeeCee and Federal government crack down on 9/15 protest march signs:
The D.C. Department of Public Works accused the ANSWER Coalition of breaking city rules by putting signs on utility boxes and using a glue that the agency said will make the posters difficult to remove. The Park Service said the signs are defacing federal property.
Coalition members said the adhesive won’t create problems and accused the government of a “politically motivated” bid to silence their efforts against the war in Iraq.

marymccurnin @ 121
I wonder if his Daily Briefing Books count in this tally, in which case he’s way behind. Or do they read those aloud to him? “Bin Laden Determined to Attack in You-Ess — that’s the homeland, sir.”
Not to change the subject or anything, but the mention of red meat reminded me that today is Julia Child’s birthday. She was born in 1912.
IIRC, I think someone admitted once that he listens to books on tape while he exercises.
If it’s not a half-truth they’re telling then it’s a lie.
oddmommy @ 98
I think it changes as we become, ahem, more mature. When I was young, I would think, wow, I’ll be 36 in the year 2000, that is so ancient! Now, moving rapidly towards the downside of 42 I do not feel nearly middle aged. Unless, of course, my darling offspring are attempting to drive me to a rubber room. I had a doctor’s appointment the other day, the nurse asked me my age and I popped right out with 37. Then I thought a minute and had to correct myself. At least I am changing the number in the right direction!
yellowdog jim @ 71
I guess it’s all my fault, then. But I have a ponytail, so the corporate media can’t possibly see me as a “middle-aged white guy,” no matter what my age.
marymccurnin @ 121
He listened to those books on tape, and probably didn’t even pay attention half the time. There’s no way that pointy-headed little dwarf actually held 94 books in his hands and actually read them. He can barely read a fucking menu.
EvilDrPuma @ 39
I happen to be a grandmother about the same age as Hillary. I find her offensive on so many levels I won’t go into detail. She is smart, but smart in the wrong way more often than not. Even us geezers want new blood, change and progressive policies. I get most of my news online and find the MSM so distorted I rarely watch anyone other than Moyers and Olbermann anymore. I hope the younger crowd is reading because that’s where the truth can be found. If we can make enough NOISE, we can change the trend and recapture the Constitution.
althespook @ 134
OK. Your turn. Go google her name, recipes, and images. Find a great one for snack. I’m too tired. Thanks Alfred!

Silly intellectual people, don’t you realize that the Left Behind series is a graphic novel???

TeddySanFran @ 110
well, from my years as a denizen of deecee and its environs, I can tell you this: there ain’t one goddamn thing the DC gov’t has ever done efficiently, EXCEPT collect fines. Anyone who has been parked illegally here for more than .06 seconds can attest to this.
Therefore, if there is a fine attached to this adhesive law…..it is just business as usual, at least as far as the city is concerned.

TRex- really nice post! You are exactly on target with this.
And, might I add that anyone who feels inclined can go over to Matt Ortega’s page, and kick in a few $$ of support. I cannot say enough nice things about Matt. If first got to know him when he did his awesome series of “War Profiteering” posts at FDL. He was my “tribute” for first yKos, and I kicked in this year too. He is eating Ramen noodles, so even $5 would help.

CNN had a blurb a few days ago about middle age. From the point of view of organ and cellular deterioration middle age is..dah.dah..39 years. That should cheer people up.

Dayam, I wish I had the plethora of locks to achieve such a distinction…!!! ;-)
EvilDrPuma @ 152
There’s nothing comic about it. Too many people actually believe that shit and I’ve long suspected the POTUS is among them.
Redshift @ 136
then i could have gone, if i was in drag?
marymccurnin @ 156
After I started reading watertiger, I started seeing cameltoe everywhere.
Well, by god, I have just arrived in the rich, deep heartland of middle age.
I sure hope I handle the next 39 a little better than I handled the first 35 or so.
johnSwifty @ 141
nothing wrong with graphic novels, lets hear it for Captain Underpants! … but i don’t think shrub would like that series, one of the two main characters is *gasp* a child of color, and both are very disrespectful of authority.
marymccurnin @ 156
And you shouldn’t without adequate spew warnings!!! Eck!
Mad Dogs @ 151
Indeed… Thinkeratin’ on the Thundermug
;>)
althespook @ 134
Now how are we supposed to take that? LOL!
I wondered when we’d get to pictures of the therapod with all those middle-class white men…
Straight white men, too.
How did they neglect that bit as well?
TRex @ 160
I know the feeling. And now I know why I haven’t been getting along well with my telomeres lately.
TRex @ 161
Oh shut up. Gawd. 35 just cannot be middle aged.
TRex @ 138
He’s been reading that book on George Washington for about 2yrs now. And the line that the GW presidency is still being judged cracks me up every time. I mean, I didn’t know the jury was still out on that.
solai @ 70
Yeah, I noticed that too. But it’s desperation really.
They criticized YearlyKos for being generally male, and then FDL for being generally female. I dunno what to tell ya.
And I mean, just how much political triangulating does one need to do in one’s own pants before they realise they haven’t got a plausible argument?
Trex,
Get any feedback from the victim of your Vlog last night? I really did like it.
Rayne @ 166
T, certainly felt neglected…!!! ;-)
marymccurnin @ 156
That off-white one with the long, open coat? While she was talking about Rove and the White House attacking her? Those were my exact words when I saw her. The words you almost didn’t submit.
EvilDrPuma @ 72
‘It would be instructive to know how many Democratic voters still pay attention to what the MSM has to say’.
That is one of the big questions, isn’t it? It’s probably a good sign that the MSM has been covering the ‘blogosphere’ lately, if only to make more people aware and curious as to what exactly is going on over here. Bring ‘em on.
I also think about that question when I’m listening to NPR’s drive-time news programs. They have become one of the worst talking-point transcription services out there, but I think they still have a reputation as being a ‘fair-to-liberal’ voice to a lot of people (but they’re also getting so jaded and stoic that no one in the 17-29 group would hang with them).
TRex @ 161
Keep the dimples and you’re golden
;>)
CTuttle @ 172
He ought to feel endangered.
The earthquake off the coast of Peru knock loose a memory of being in Cusco; the Inca Capital. The Spanish built their city on top of and around Inca structures. After earthquakes hit that area of Peru, the “modern construction” is damaged or destroyed and the Inca foundations and walls are left intact. The Inca stone work is amazing.
marymccurnin @ 155
okay, okay.
i Know i Am missing Something(s):
1) what’s a Tunic Top?
2) what’s a camel toe?
3) what’s with almost not submitting your comment?
everybody is always tuned into these things and i always miss them.
i have to ask.
AZ Matt @ 176
…extinct, even??? ;-)
TexBetsy @ 139
Try this one.
whuzza “camel toe”??
solai @ 169
Maybe the shrubbery one is hoping history will attribute all his ills to Klinefelter’s Syndrome, as well.
Alfred, what are those?
petwrecker @ 129
maybe he read one book 94 times…
oddmommy @ 181
where the front of your pants get caught in your labia, think panty line but more (ahem) personal lines
watertiger has tons of pics of pickles with cameltoe
Dennis Kucinich is right on the numbers — nothing to distinguish the DLC from the Neocon agenda.
Congress is throwing up $30 billions to Israel for military hardware over the next ten years.
So much for fixing bridges in Minnesota!
CTuttle @ 156
My dad is 91 and still has to have a haircut every two months or he looks shaggy. No baldness genes in our DNA (we got all the *ssh*l* ones instead..:))
oddmommy @ 181
Yeah, for us style impaired individuals??? ;-)
I’m not sure it I want to explain camel toe or not. I suggest that those who don’t know go google. Basically, it has to do with how women’s pants fit at the crotch.
Sliding down the wrong side of 50 I’ve realised that middle age isn’t a number, it’s a state of mind. My 81 year old mother in law is the most youthful person I know.
xargaw @ 139
Rock on. I have a younger sister in her mid-20s and I’ve been so impressed when talking with her and her friends. I wonder if these Internet era kids are a sign of how knowledge is indeed power. It’s all very encouraging.
It is a crucial time now for us to grow our numbers however. We’ve been seeing pushback from the powers-that-be and it’s only going to get more intense and more sophisticated, so we need to be ready. Increasing the readers, viewers and listeners of this new media to a point where it can financially sustain itself, and have a large enough and powerful voice that no pollytician would dream of trying to create a tiered Internet needs to be our goal.
I’m worried that the numbers have slowed somewhat after the initial explosion of the netroots. We have get more people getting their news from the new media. Tell someone everyday about FDL or similar places.
oddmommy @ 181
Uh,oh…who’s going to answer this?
Karl Rove Image Rehabilitation and Shakedown / Influence Peddling tour continues this Sunday on Meet The Press.
Funniest thing. That little linky? The one that invites questions for the guests? Doesn’t seem to be there anymore. *cough* wonder if these still work… *cough*
“Meet the Press” askmtp@nbc.com; “MTP” mtp@nbc.com
Spiderpaws hasn’t chimed in yet, so i’ll say it: astrologically middle age is transiting Uranus (no jokes please, heard ‘em all hundreds of times) opposed natal Uranus. Used to happen around age 44-45, but due to eccentricity of orbit, now happens for most people around age 39-40.
So wtf does that mean? Time to reevaluate life and change things that don’t work, resurrect old ideals & dreams. If you resist change, ya get whomped. Midlife crisis is another term used *g*
Oh jeepers, VG, who knows what would turn up on a Google search of that term!!
Don’t do that at work!!
darkblack @ 101
Reading 10 Dr. Suess books 9.4 times each is not the same as reading 94 books.
i GOT it!!
“Camel Toe”
is when your clown car’s contours are showing through your clothes
solai @ 190
Suzanne already did.
oddmommy @ 181
A camel toe is when a lady’s pants or jeans or swimsuit are way too tight in a very special spot.
Valley Girl @ 188
Or an ill-upholstered clown car, if you will
;>)
althespook @ 133
Best Julia Childs:
Pork roast at 350%, 30 minutes per pound, salt and pepper only. Cook uncovered (and on a rack) until nicely browned and crispy, then foil on top if needed. Add a little water if too dry and the bottom of the pan risks burning.
After it’s cooked, instead of gravy making with the drippings, pour off oil, and put the pan on a low burner. Add good quality sour kraut. Serve the brown, pork-flavored sour kraut on top of mashed potatoes instead of gravy. Marvy!
CTuttle @ 187
A camel toe is a style impairment. Unless you’re auditioning for the kind of movies they make in rented houses in the San Fernando Valley.
OK. I’m confused. Are the middle aged white males supposed to be running the foul-mouthed fem-blog?
yellowdog jim @ 196
Haaa!!!
Betsy, check out Erin.
Trex,
You nailed it, one of the most important things to accomplish is bring all of us together, the thing they, the dreaded they, fear most, hence the very obvious divisive propaganda that has been going on for years. You said what I think with your usual fine wit.
Thanks
TexBetsy @ 182
chocolate soufles. here’s the creator’s blog.
try this tasty tidbit as well.
Oooooh.
[anyone remember Edith Bunker?]
Oooooooooooooh.
Camel toe. Hee hee.
ok, now here’s a question I *really* shouldn’t ask…..what’s the word when your pants get caught in your, um…..well, the OTHER side…..is that a “wedgie”?
persiflage @ 189
So’s my Ninety-plus Grandma! She claims she taught me everything I know… I’ll protest mildly about that fact…!!! *g*
marymccurnin @ 156
yellowdog jim @ 196
That is perfect!
Rayne @ 194
oh dear! I didn’t have to google, because I already knew what the term meant! I didn’t check out google first, but it sounds like I should have, before making the recommendation!
I believe this is called Return on Investment.
LA Galaxy 2, DC United 0.
Beckham, 58 minutes played, one trademark bending, dipping, free kick goal (poor Troy Perkins had no idea what was happening), one pinpoint pass to set up a goal.
I’m watching the Keith rerun. Congrats to him. He talked about the fact that the White House is actually writing the Petraeus report.
marymccurnin @ 202
you know my beloved mother-in-law (may she reat in peace) called that
“Helen Keller pants”:
Valley Girl @ 210
Too funny…imagine somebody playing catch-up on their fem-blog reading at work on Monday morning, taking your advice to Google up the ‘toe term, and BAM!! there’s a snap of HRC’s clown car on their monitor for all the office to see over their shoulder.
Bwa-hahahahah!!
Thanks Alfred. Yum! Just what I needed.
Yellowdog Jim — EGADS! Better check the weather forecast when I wake up. Might want to have groceries in the house.
Suzanne, SO glad I usually wear skirts or dresses rather than pants.
solai @ 192
The answer is actually a correction in plurality. Camels have two toes on each foot. The two toes, in close proximity, have been likened to a part of the female anatomy when clad with tight fitting garments. This is not always to be thought of as necessarily a bad thing. For instance, the mere thought of Laura Petre’s camel toe is said to have contributed to the coming of age story in untold numbers of young men from the early sixties on.
yellowdog jim @ 213
Heh, a similar scenario; which head did the thinkin’!!!
TexBetsy @ 216
I’ll bet ann countergeist and the mary ghoulina have camel toes. I mean REAL ones! (nasty smirk)
Oh, and to keep up my enlistment here, ahem, ahem:

Thank you very much for coming. Souvenier T-Shirts are available on you way out.
betsy- i hope we get some rain, but they don’t expect much before the weekend.
let’s Not go to the coast just yet.

She isn’t the only one who is mia during the break. Our congresscritter is not holding any of his much ballyhooed town hall meetings during the break. The reason his office is giving is that, “It’s August, and people won’t come to them.” I won’t give his name but I live in Washington State CD #6.
On another note, I don’t know if I am middle-aged or not, but let’s just say, ‘I don’t know many 126 year olds.” ;-)
Rayne @ 214
Rayne, I am truly laughing out loud having read your comment! You have such a great mind!
Valley Girl @ 210
My mascara is pouring down my face and my husband and I are laughing ourselves silly. We knew this — that’s what teenagers are for…

Yvonne Craig (batgirl) and Diana Rigg (Avengers) for some of us. If you watch one of the very early B and W avengers with DR you get an unedited flash of her naked derriere as a “wardrobe malfunction” in a fight scene that they didn’t discover until the ep was finished.
To us Dianna Rigg admirers, it is the holy grail . I have a copy on DVD from VHS. I keep it in the safe deposit box.

For wit, wisdom and nuance, little there is which compares to FDL. G’Nite, all.
I was thinking of all the new readers who may come to the lake after reading the Collins brouhaha. Their worst fears confirmed.
Sleep well David.
TRex @ 48
Membership in the White Male Elite is highly overrated. Give me dirty f’ing hippies, uppity broads, and Sodomites any time.
I’m 53 now and unfortunately feeling pretty darn middle aged right now. But then again, I was middle aged for a while when I was 14, 27, 35 and 48. It can be overcome ;)
Christine Edmonson @ 221
Cool!
FDL is steering me into Google porn.
i blame TRex.
Valley Girl @ 221
Heh. Just that foul-mouthed fem-blogger mindset, you know how it goes.
Actually, having been a corporate IT drone, I can honestly picture this happening. The average person has NO idea what kind of stuff shows up when one has to do minor IT service on the boss’s laptop, for example.
Ugh. I still can’t reconcile a certain boss’s fetish for anything pink, along with Catholic guilt and Japanese school girls with what I knew about him personally — and all that stuff came out of his cache, disclosing what he’d been Googling. Yeesh.
David W. Bartoo @ 227

ok, so I just asked mr. oddmommy if he knows what a “camel toe” is, and he looked at me like I was crazy and said something about “high school.”

Of course TRex is a femblogger, now that I think of it. I did not make my point well. TRex has gotten into some trouble when he crosses the appropriateness line, and I just meant to make it clear that the whole discussion had nothing to do with anything TRex has said either in posts or comments, and that for the most part it is the female commenters who are having a good laugh about this discussion.

Now, I just go with the white boy ‘fro, because it’s pretty goddamned hard to find a barber nowadays, everyone is a flipin’ stylist.

If any of our Dem “lede-ers,’ (since news coverage is all they seem to care about) don’t follow the netroots lead, we’re gonna kick ‘em to the curb. Funny that characterization. As this guy and in a suit as a candidate I felt different but not out of place. My friends told me that I clean up well and I do feel like a candidate but there weren’t many of us there.
I was there in a suit but I’m certainly not of the Matt Bai type. I’m a candidate for Congress who would not be running were it not for the netroots. I’ve been a member of the netroots for almost three years and considerably before I was a candidate.

Maybe. This is only true if they (the Loyal Order of DC Fossils) are aware of the dawning coalescence of need. For example, we need to stop wasting the lives of our military. We need health care. We need to take care of the blatant, universal, corporate corruption. It may seem obvious to the likes of you and me but for some reason it isn’t obvious to the DC Fossils. They simply cannot comprehend.
Maybe it’s been this way all along. Maybe I’m the naive bastard who finally gets the fact that we’ve been screwed all along.

Any Dem who wants their vote should probably be talking to them in person on a college campus.
So, now that the much ballyhooed Patreus Report in September that was supposed to be the defining moment in the Occupation of Iraq has already been exposed as another opportunity for the White House for spin control, what are the Democrats going to do? Will they make a lot of noise, wail, moan, whine, and wring their hands, but do nothing, as so many times before? Or will they actually do something to restrain Bush’s war?
Selise had some interesting comments on a previous thread today, and not knowing what he wrote, I wrote on similar lines near the end of the thread without realizing that we were perhaps headed in the same direction. My best guess is that the Democrats will storm and stomp, propose a wonderful sounding bill to stop the war that has no teeth, and then blame the Blue Dogs for holding them back. But as Selise suggests, the Blue Dogs are not the real problem.

“Or will they actually do something to restrain Bush’s war?”
They will not. The War in Iraq is motivated by access the to the sweet crude beneath Al-Anbar. “Executive Oil” aided by “corpocratpugs” aka “asselephants” care not for law, or borders, only profit and the cost is blood and death. If not for the love of oil……..
Natural Selection, Corporate Treason and “Executive Oil.”
Kos had a post up about the term “main stream media”- very insightful. He suggests use of term “traditional media” instead. Agree with him we should adopt that.
incredibly positive. incredibly hopeful. thanks. just the thought I needed to start the day.
