Firedoglake has issued the following press release today:
Collins Campaign In Sexist Attack on Leading Blog
Firedoglake Calls for Apology and Firing of Collins Campaign Blogger
Washington, DC August 15, 2007 – On the same day that Susan Collin’s Senate reelection campaign chief of staff Steve Abbott was pronouncing that “we have long prided ourselves on our efforts to maintain a civil level of discourse over the course of spirited political campaigns,” Collins’ Director of Internet Strategy, Lance Dutson, launched a false and offensive attack against the highly respected blog, Firedoglake, best known for its groundbreaking liveblogging of the Scooter Libby trial.
Firedoglake’s founder, Jane Hamsher demanded an apology and the firing of Dutson for his characterization of the blog as “the foul-mouthed fem-blog FiredogLake.”
“I’m deeply offended that Senator Collins would speak about professional women in such a degrading and offensive manner,” said Hamsher. “It is well beneath the dignity becoming a sitting Senator to engage in such coarse and misogynistic rhetoric.”
Christy Hardin Smith, featured FDL blogger, said: “The sexist undertones used on Sen. Collins’ blog are appalling – the use of “fem-blog” is erroneous and dismissive. Citizens in this country have a right — an obligation — to hold those who ask us for our votes accountable. Women have just as much right as men to speak up for their country and their families, whether Senator Collins likes that or not.”
Firedoglake, one of the leading progressive blogs with over a half million readers per week publishes posts by Jane Hamsher, Christy Hardin Smith, Trex and Pachacutec — both male bloggers — and guest posts by an additional 4 women and 6 male bloggers. Firedoglake received critical acclaim with its in-depth coverage of the Valerie Plame case culminating in the blog’s live gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Scooter Libby trial – coverage that drew applause from leading journalism professionals. The New York Times, in a page one story noted that “the Firedoglake ‘live blog’ has offered the fullest, fastest public report available. Many mainstream journalists use it to check on the trial.”
Highly engaged in the political arena, Firedoglake joined with Crooks and Liars, Digby’s Hullabaloo and Down With Tyranny, to launch the Blue America Pac, which raised half a million dollars during the 2006 election cycle. FDL features weekly interviews with candidates and recently hosted online conversations with presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Chris Dodd.

Maine based firepups might like to send civil letters to the editors of their local press – here are a few contacts to work with:
- Jtuttle@bangordailynews.net – Jeff Tuttle, editor Bangor Daily News
- Mdowd@bangordailynews.net – Mike Dowd, editor Bangor Daily News
- radionews@mpbn.net – Maine Public Radio
- cvn@mainetoday.com – Carl V. Natale – MaineToday.com
One great way to support FDL’s call for better political discourse is to support Collins Democratic challenger Tom Allen with a donation via Blue America.
Don’t miss DownWithTyranny Keninny’s great analysis of Collins “desperation.“
(update – Dutson’s hatespeech website seems to be having difficulties so you may have problems with that link)

woot, go, go go! attaaaaack
Hurray!
I’ll be *very* curious to see if you get an apology!
Yeah! Attack! Attack! Attack! Attack!
Go git ‘em!
Booyah! Lance is about to get the coulterificated.
Have I mentioned that I LOVE being the press secretary for FDL!
Well said! Did you cc the Dems? They could benefit significantly by the example.
Zed?
Glad you did this! Foul mouthed fem blog – not.
JDM @ 7
Oh, indeed!
FDL!!! And single digits?
Damn! Foul-mouthed fem bloggers!!
The reporter at the Portland Press Herald who wrote the story about Collins being stalked: I wrote him or her (I don’t remember the byline offhand) earlier today. I don’t need to say this to Mainers, but folks who are not may not be aware that Maine campaigns are generally civilized and not particularly partisan. We elected two independent governors over the last 40 years for a reason.
This is very much out of keeping with the tone of a statewide Maine campaign, which is what I wrote to the reporter. I did not know that this person is a staffer. That makes it still worse.
I don’t see how Lance keeps his job.
FDL is foulmouthed? Have they been taking grammar lessons from Dick Cheney?
Very impressive.
Like any other republicans attempting to cover their lame ass, I’m sure Collins will say Dutson just misspoke.
Go Fem Bloggers! We all love you.
Thank you for making such great statements to Susan Collins. It should be easy for her to give a heartfelt apology considering her “civil campaign” pronouncement.
Hang tough, that’s for sure.
This is what it looks like, Dems.
PURRfect! Now this is smart politics – to say nothing of just plain smart.
Question: A couple of days ago someone wrote in that people with video cameras were following Susan C. and that they had clobbered girl scouts (?) and children. I assumed it was a troll who was writing in. Have they been pushing this line too?
Go FDL! Go Jane, Pach, Christie, Trex and all! And make sure all the dems hear about it!
-ck- @ 13
In his case it is “noble” foul-mouthed language.
game on, susan.
Siun @ 6
Atta girl, Siun!
Now this is thinking like Red Auerbach. Love it.
But, but, ya’ll are foul-mouthed fem bloggers…!!! *g*
1,568 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizens Hamsher, Hardin Smith and all the Firepup Patriots:
EEEEE… DOGIES!!! Now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ about. There is one word to describe the FDL press release: perfect!
KEEP THE FAITH AND DO IT TO THEM BEFORE THEY GET ANOTHER CHANCE TO DO IT TO US!!!
Shouldn’t the Independent Senator from Connecticut condemn this sort of partisan, polarizing attack by the Collins campaign? Shouldn’t said Senator condemn this obvious “politics of division”?
Ghostman
The story of someone clobbering girl scouts, etc was silly … there were two different people tracking Collins at a parade – from from Iraq Summer who wanted to get Collins to answer some questions and one from the Maine Dems who were doing simple campaign tracking. Dutson apparently got offended….
then offensive
nice work, Siun!
Perhaps Keith Olbermann should get a copy as well?
I’ve been trying to access their website all day. I wonder if it’s down due to heavy traffic.
The best defense is a good offense. I love, love, love the statement.
Siun, the “hatespeech” link at the end of your post links to the FDL post earlier today instead of dutson’s website.
Cleaning house one New England state at a time? This is feeling mighty familiar, almost like a Joementum/Dangerstein situation. Hopefully Susan Collins will do the right thing, but if she chooses to back Dutson and his ranting then she’s probably not going to like the fight she has on her hands.
Don’t mistake us for fowl-mouthed… that would be a special title reserved for Cheneys hunting partners.
Eureka Springs @ 33
And Scarecrow.
We must do here what we are insisting the Democrats do – make it as difficult as possible for this type of Republican to do what Bush has taught them all to do.
Saying it doesn’t make it so AND we will not sit passively by while we wait for the truth to emerge.
Republicans have counted on the passive faith in the truth-shall-set-us-free approach. They simply state lie after lie after lie until the truth is buried and sputters out.
Truth can’t do anything at all unless it is spoken, lived, fought for, and sometimes, used as a sword.
Nice work! But shouldn’t you have slipped a few obscenities into the Release? I mean you have a reputation to uphold… /sarcasm/
I am proud to be a Firepup.
It must be lunch time and my sugar level has dropped. My patience is ebbing. Unlike Cheney and Chertoff, I bleed, perspire and need normal food.
retirin’ in five @ 35
Quack?
Seamus – we wanted to point folks to Jamie’s earlier post which was so good.
Thanks for checking it out.
SeamusD at 31 — I think Siun did that because the Collins’ campaign website is down at the moment. Since we had a screen-grab of one of the offensive comments, you at least get a taste of what was allowed to stay up there for more than twelve hours before their site was either overtaken with a lot of traffic or pulled (they haven’t as yet announced what happened to their website, so we don’t know what is going on with their end of things…).
Right on!
I’m really proud of Jane, Christy, and all the others. FDL is fighting back!
So far today this Datson kook took down his blog– or was told to take it down– and fundraising for Tom Allen has gone through the roof. DWT has two pieces up on Collins’ assault on FDL, one by me at 8AM and another by Ken at 9AM. At 8AM we had 273 contributors to Allen’s site. Last time I looked we were up to 286. Blue America is far and away his biggest online supporter in terms of numbers of donors and amounts of money. It’s driving Lieberman insane– and I’m not being hyperbolic. I had a phone call this morning.
QuakerGirl @ 21
And he said it “felt good,” so that must make it okay. Conservatives are always telling us “if it feels good, do it,” right?
puppethead @ 31
It seems that our man Lance Dutson has had some legal problems of his own for shooting of his foul mouth. Susan C certainly knows how to pick people:
http://belowthefold.typepad.co…..ons_l.html
People here sometimes use emphatic, earthy language. But commenters and posters at this blog have enriched the English language as much as if not more than any other progressive blog. There’s a doctoral thesis out there on this somewhere, eh, punaise?
howie at 43 — hehehehehehe Well, that’s something anyway. *G*
Nice, no warning shot over the bow, just a direct hit!
Great job Siun!
howieklein @ 44
Ooh, ooh, tell us more!
Right on, Ladies!
I’ll bet Dutson’s nose is still hurting.
The Dems could learn a thing or two about self-respect from the leadership of this blog!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 42
Maybe they can call the people who ran Joe Lieberman’s 2006 campaign website for some technical assistance?
Redshift @ 51
LOL! There really isn’t much more– just an insider calling to laugh and tell me I was right about how this would make Lieberman nuts. He thinks we don’t like him.
Oh ET!
SMACK!
foul-mouthed FEM BLOG? well, there is a little foul language here and there, that is true, but fem blog??????
no, i don’t think so……most definitely not. (bring on the gong show error sound…..)
ever notice when insecure people get nervous or are afraid that they attack someone with name-calling and disparaging remarks? that seems to be happening a lot lately.
just shows you’re having an effect jane, et al……and having an effect is what you’re trying to do, so, you must be doing something right!
your other motive that i have gathered is to educate, and that you do equally as well…….
so, shine your boots and keep on kickin’ your heels, you all rate high on my fine people scale. i love what you all are doing and spend a lot of time being informed here and i’m PARTICULAR about where i spend my time……..
Christy Hardin Smith @ 40

More of this!!! Brava/Bravo
scarecrow @ 39
Sorry, my bad. Googled definition. Of course, if I’m eating crow over my hasty comment, wouldn’t that fit the definition? Nevermind.
howieklein @ 54
Well – Duh.
Howie! what great news!
I really hope everyone will join in to support Allen … we need to get any Senator who employs this kind of nut out of government.
scarecrow @ 40
And me.
Ghostman @ 27
I think that’s a very good point, ghostman.
I chipped in for Allen when I read Jamie’s post. I hope this helps him get his message out.
Per Howie’s comments, Lance Dutson is probably the best thing that’s happened to Tom Allen in the last couple of days–and also to FDL.
Poll: Dole vulnerable on Iraq
Just think how badly they would lose to a brand-name Democratic candidate.
Damn! Forgot about Raven! (Yo, bro, forty years ago entering last week of AIT at Ft. Leonard Wood.)

I’m epithetically enhanced.

Collins site is down, this is obviously some sort of hack from liberals, always attacking people for censorship except when YOU do it. you people sicken me and need to re-education to stop hating our constitution and America! Bush is a true christian warrior and when future people look back will be remembered as a hero!!!!!
dont censor this comment fdl, there is nothing offensive, just opinion, just like th last one you deleted, further proving my point.
Wrong. No, we did not. The site was either configured ineptly and could not handle the substantial traffic that Dutson brought on himself and on Sen. Collins with his asinine stunt. Or they have taken it down themselves.
Do not make accusations without the proof to back them up, or you make yourself look like a loon. And, for the record, bearing false witness is a sin.
Watertiger … we are never “foul” …energetic, impassioned, colorful … but foul?
Great job Suin!
Reason one gazzilion and ten that I love this place.

We so need a candidate to take on Dole. She is loaded with campaign cash from Big Business interests but vulnerable as a quintessential rubber stamp.

Firedoglake is my favorite blog. I like the news, the analysis, the fairness, the detail, and the dedication to truth and accuracy. (Oh, and also, the humor.)
I am an elderly Southern lady for whom courtesy is an essential part of life. I would characterize the language on Firedoglake as modern American.
I’m always checking out conservative blogs in an attempt to find some reasonable dialog. So far I have found only one that is perhaps a possibility. But the language of most conservative blogs and their commentors is extremely coarse and ad hominem.
Though I live far from Maine, I’m now going to send Tom Allen a small check.
More on Dutson. The case was dropped. But he was referred to by the Boston Globe as a “hyperopinionated blogger”

Remids me of a certain candidate for Senate in a certain northeastern state on a certain election day.
Mayfly! thank you!
Another sign that we are winning and that the Republicans are feeling unnerved and under pressure.
Your are interfering with the “canned”idate message machine!
They will try anything to stop the flow of critical analysis.
Good job, Firedoglake. Fight back! Shower them with truth and principle and progressive values.
I just started reading this blog, and I have to say that you are ‘NOT THE FOUL MOUTHED FEMALE BLOG’ that Collins is talking about. Just because the truth is kind of ‘foul- mouthed’ you call it like it is. The truth stinks, and you’re just calling it like it is. I dislike immensely what is going on in OUR country today. I am really scared because nobody seems to be doing anything. It really is up to us, what is the first thing to do? I wrote to Pelosi, and she sent me back a two sentence reply saying that I should get a hold of my Congressmen. Isn’t she MY speaker too?? I just don’t get it, it feels like I woke up on another planet or somewhere I’ve never been before. Thanks for letting me rant.
OT to Raven — it was great to be young. It sucked to where we were then.
There is nothing that freaks out Republicans (both the males and female) more that intelligent women who stick up for themselves and don’t take any B.S. Its hits them right in their core because it goes against their entire worldview. A worldview that is comprised of social dominators and the dominated. We, both male and female, are nether, we don’t want to dominate anyone but that doesn’t mean we’ll take and B.S. either.
WT, I *am* foulmouthed, so it’s cool.
they’re still pissed that the Allen campaign got all those donations when Joltin’ Joe came and campaigned for Collins.
Is that DD character still around? That guy pissed me off…
Not. One. Step. Back.

Nice post: and to think that occasional poster DWD brought you this news. Why my heart just flutters (in a manly way of course.)
(Honestly, when I read that yesterday, I giggled. The attack was so amateurish that it did nothing but elicit humor on my part. If anything, this blog is the antithesis of the foul-mouthed blog. And though it is somewhat of a feminine place, it is not entirely so and that is fine: it is what I expect to find here . . . but it does just show to go you: at the Kos Convention it was all middle aged white guys. . . I guess, when they want to hurt someone, then it is “foul mouthed fem bloggers.” I guess you just cannot please everyone!)

Every time Susan Collins mentions FDL it’s great PR and adds $$$ to Tom Allen’s coffers. Let’s just go ahead and have the debate about the role of the so-called shrill and distempered blogosphere.
Come and find out why we’re so pissed off. Newcomers will be pissed too if they aren’t already.

And now Susan Collins can’t handle a little videotaping and observation of her actions at her public campaign rallies and municipal parade photo-ops..?! American citizens ought to haunt the public movements of the Democratic Party leadership, and of Susan Collins, and Lieberman, and Kyl, if only to let them know what constant monitoring and suspicion feels like – they’ve approvingly and eagerly helped to subject the rest of us to far worse invasions of privacy committed by our government’s unchecked and secret police powers, even in our private phone calls and emails, so why should they be allowed to exempt themselves from such “unwarranted surveillance” by mere citizens and constituents at public events?

And if the likes of Malkin think that they can put their disgusting record of filth against Jane’s, they will simply end up looking more filthy by comparison. Truly. Jane is a big girl, and she can more than handle whatever they try and fling. Senator Collins is an elected official who preaches the gospel of civility and then hires someone to try and lowball a “fem-blog” so that she can pretend to have clean hands because it wasn’t her official Senate page.

And besides, ultimately the man was flawed in more than just his accusations. There are no mouths involved here at all. At most, this may be considered a foul-fingered fem-blog, as typing is the primary medium of exchange.

Tom @ 100
I disagree. I personally think that is a brilliant piece of art. But, how many times have we heard “Is Obama black enough?” That stealth neo-con Suzanne Malveaux asked Hillary Clinton, “Are you black enough?” Malveaux may be starting a trend. All democrats will be asked that question.
We know who has been stealing votes from Americans (who happen to be black). The racists KKKarl Rove, Department of Justice, Jeb Bush, and the Republican party.

I’m really surprised you’re asking for an apology over such a weak flame. I’d have expected more of a TBogg type response, running it as part of rotating endorsements on the main page.
I’ve visited this blog many times (it’s on my regular schedule of daily readings) and this is my first comment. Thank you for taking a stand against people like Dutson. The time to ignore these remarks is long past. I think we’ve all learned that ignoring them won’t make them go away. One must fight back. We have the truth on our side. Thank you for all the work you have done in the fight to take back our country.
And if this gets Lance fired. Just rewards, because his earlier antics got someone at the Maine tourism board fired. What a jerk.
But, how many times have we heard “Is Obama black enough?” That stealth neo-con Suzanne Malveaux asked Hillary Clinton, “Are you black enough?”
Which could well be asked of her too, fwiw.
But civility precludes that. I’ll settle for – “Are you bought and paid for, or just flat-out nuts?”

Don’t know her, do think she is a wonderful person echo that for CHS and all the FMFDLW.

Vigilant citizens should now no longer fear being dragged into court from exercising their civic duty to report suspicious activity or a possible threat by this administration. We now have immunity. Joe and Susan said so.

We should use this opportunity to remind the Senator from Maine what is most foul –
Lying to take us into war is foul mouthed –
Treating our troops like cannon fodder in that war is foul mouthed –
Ignoring the needs of wounded veterans is foul mouthed –
Passing the trillion dollar debt for that war on to the next generation is foul mouthed –
Passing tax cuts for the rich while failing to fund infrastructure repairs is foul mouthed –
Subverting the DoJ for political purposes is foul mouthed –
Undermining the voting rights of minorities is foul mouthed –
The list goes on and on, but anyone who supports the Bush Cheney cabal is supported the most vile foul mouthed bunch of gangsters to ever hold office in this country.

Do FDL and the other progressive blogs frighten Bush rubber-stampers like Susan Collins precisely because of their dedication to principle?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
EPU may mean:
* European Pharmaceutical Union
* European Payments Union
* European Parliamentary Union
* Emergency Power Unit
* Evil Parallel Universe
* The European University Center for Peace Studies is known as the EPU
Do you mean one of these or is there another definition you have in mind?
Rove is behind this nasty business. This is the Rove opening salvo on HRC.
YellowdogD, Raven, Norske — charter members of the FDL VN era vets for Tom Allen? Send him a few bucks if you can spare it. Sue Collins needs to be Lamonted.
Well, we *are* foul mouthed. But actually a little less so here than on other blogs. (Hunter’s “Horse F%^$ing” diary comes to mind.)
But the “fem-blog’ is meant to be derogatory and dismissive of the blog’s posts, as if we are only interested in the victimization of women, “working mom vs stay-at-home mom” and equality in child-rearing.
It’s meant to move us to the back of the bus. Like, we couldn’t possibly have anything analytical to say about politics in general.
How does Susan Collins feel about having a guy on her staff who thinks she is just a token fem Senator? She can’t possibly be any good at what she does. (Well, I would have to agree, but for entirely different reasons.)
Go get’em, Jane.

Dedication to principle may be part of it, but the truly scary thing to the conservative perspective might simply be the looming specter of independent thought and well formed opinion.

2. My letter to the editors was as follows:
I am a fellow New Englander I write therefore with a sense of personal shame that a member of our regional congressional delegation would countenance the expression of openly misogynist language and the making of blatantly false statements about Firedoglake.com, a respected political blog.
I am a regular reader and occasional commentator on that blog, and can assure you that the bloggers and commentators are of both genders and of extreme courtesy to each other even when in disagreement.
Senator Collins has long been civil and open in her bi-partisan discussions where and when others of her party are not. If what campaign chief of staff Steve Abbott says is true and her campaign staff has“long prided ourselves on our efforts to maintain a civil level of discourse over the course of spirited political campaigns,” then the author of the misogynist statement, her Director of Internet Strategy, Lance Dutson, has no place on that staff.

The more I think about it, the more I think we ought to embrace the fact that some of us swear like sailors. We were brought up during the leading edge of gender equality. I think most of us got over blushing about the occasional F-bomb during the late 70’s. Sometimes, that “expletive deleted” just feels so good. It’s expressive and colorful and takes me right back to SchoolHouse Rock’s song about interjections.

“Though I live far from Maine, I’m now going to send Tom Allen a small check.”
That in a nutshell is what has the crackheads at FOX noise, the RNC and the White House pulling their hair out. 10, 20 30, 40 or 50 dollar donations, from millions of regular Americans tired of the nasty, jingoistic, xenophobic paranoid rants of the likes of Malkin, Hannity and Newt (ooooh I hope he runs).
The drumbeat of more war, fewer nasty brown people and the call for more surveillance on American citizens, more money in the pockets of corporations, more deregulation and privatization of essential public services speaks to what the Republican party is truly about — power, not governance, division not problem solving, hate, not respect for your fellow man.
Kick some more ass FDL, and keep kicking it, and when your right leg gets tired, use your left leg and kick some more ass.

$71 billion might be double counting – these are overnight loans & tend to repeat.
The fed is pumping in more credit than usual because the standard funding devices that provide short term loans & keep Wall Street turning are totally siezed up. Since most money exists due to credit, everything has dried up at once. Today was hedge fund redemption day, & the marks are stampeding for the exits.

And let’s not forget Collins broke her pledge to only serve 2 terms.
Susan Collins
You have to scroll down.
Term limits
Sen. Collins reneged on her pledge to only serve for at most 12 years, or 2 only terms, in the Senate. During a campaign appearance in 1996, she answered “Yes” to a question about whether she would pledge to only serve 12 years in the Senate. In 2002, Collins stated in a letter to a constituent her continued pledge to serve only 12 years in the Senate, “I intend to serve only two terms as I indicated in the Sanford forum six years ago.” On October 12, 2006 Collins stated that she was breaking her pledge and would seek another six year term in the Senate. Collins justified her new position stating that her viewpoint on seniority has changed, “At the time, I thought that 12 years, that two terms, would be enough. This was at the height of what I would call the frenzy over term limits.”

My understanding is that many banks are heavily leveraged with dodgy holdings all tied to the subprime mess, and these banks have gotten scared about lending money out to anyone in case they themselves need the money to cover their own shortcomings. Because banks are suddenly being tight nobody has any short term cash to do anything, hence the liquidity problem.
I’m not a financial expert, so take it for what it’s worth.
Jane, Christy and Siun — Thanks so much for responding to this idiotic nastiness in this efficient, effective, and timely way. Great job. Great release. It is my opinion that John Kerry buried himself in the last election because he was under the impression that responding to idiocy like this was a) beneath a well-bred Democrat and b) something that would only inflame the garbage-throwing more. We should disabuse ourselves of this mistaken thinking – responding to this junk and hate-talk quickly and in a responsible and eloquent fashion not only is “nice”, it is also imperative. We can’t let this stuff pass. Ever. To allow it to stand only encourages the trolls to attack more and more often and with more hate and more stupidity. Remember – they hold to the rule of The Big Lie.

good news and about time!
You really have to wonder about the brainpower at the top of Collins’ 2008 reelection committee. Perhaps her staff sees her as being attacked from the right as not intellectually corrupt enough, in which case, this kind of vapid mudslinging might make some sense–if only the kind of sense possible in Rove-era American politics. Who else, after all, is going to be pleased up in Maine when you slam progressives? Conservative raccoons? It’s not exactly a state noted for walking in lockstep with either party, or for wingnut hysteria.
If anything, I would have thought Collins might start doing more to play a bit further to the left in Congress, to draw on Democrats while claiming she was “an independent Republican” (an extinct legislative species outlawed back during the Gingrich Years).
Way to dig yourself deeper, Senator. Please don’t apologize. I like a good Racinian tragedy. Go forward to your fate. We’ll applaud.

Yeah, right. Iran has nuclear weapons like Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction when we invaded Iraq. Iran has the smarts, and the technological capacity on close to the same level of Pakistan, but the most realistic assessments I remember are that it is about 10 years away from a functional capacity to make nuclear threats.
We’ve heard this kind of scare talk before from Dick Cheney the Neo-cons, and from Condi Rice, and it all turned out to be vapor. No one should trust ANY of this sort of claptrap unless certified by Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian diplomat who is the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an inter-governmental organization under the auspices of the United Nations. His assessments have proven more accurate in the past than the propaganda emanating from the Vice President’s office.

I can’t really thimk of a way to “fight it”-the only realistic way is to provide alternatives. When Rush spews some BS, an outraged person in their car should be able to spin their dial and hear a progressive viewpoint-and yet the thought of the do-not-advertise-on-Air America-list seems to rule that out.
That leaves the blogs.
humboldt blue at 210 says-”Though I live far from Maine, I’m now going to send Tom Allen a small check.”
That in a nutshell is what has the crackheads at FOX noise, the RNC and the White House pulling their hair out. 10, 20 30, 40 or 50 dollar donations, from millions of regular Americans tired of the nasty, jingoistic, x*noph*bic paranoid rants of the likes of Malkin, Hannity and Newt (ooooh I hope he runs).
Kick some more ass FDL, and keep kicking it, and when your right leg gets tired, use your left leg and kick some more ass.”
i know i’m epu’d, but i like what you said!

I love hearing about siblings who stay close, or grow closer in adulthood. Our grown “kids” are very close to eachother, and to us.
It’s just really terrific! Congrats! ;->

Good for you!. By the way, even tho the pack tends to dash on up to new posts, more than a few keep checking back on older ones too, so I know you’ll be read. I checked your link. Dandy!
Thanks for being a good sport.
One more thing – comments aren’t closed for awhile on the posts (like, after several hours) so maybe you’ll get some more responses.

And Karl Rove’s big lies go unchallenged.
We have a talk radio guy who was a political operative for years – and still is in his job of perpetuating lies. He is 100% for Mitt Romney as he was for Bush. He attacks Hillary Clinton daily with out rebuttal.
The airwaves belong to corporate Republicans.
Blogging is an intellectual exercise which requires the active engagement of the participants. Airwaves flow out and over homes, cars, into earpieces. The majority of Americans deserve to be heard on the radio and on more than Keith O and the Daily Show.
This may have already been mentioned above, but it appears that Maine Web Report is not accessible at this time. Ooopsie. Too much heat? It’s toast? Maybe Lance has quit? LOL Not sure, but great job you foul-mouthed fem-bloggers you!
:-)
My daughter used to say that the second to worse thing a misogynist male college student could call a young co-ed who disagreed with him was “Feminist.” The term “Lesbian” was reserved for girls that would not respond favorably to his attempts at seduction. So “foul-mouthed fem” sounds to me like the fellow saying it is a bit more nuanced in his name calling and has learned that saying the word “lesbian” has made trouble for him in the past, and you get a comment like the one this guy used. “Foul-mouthed fem” is probably a misogynistic male term for “Uppity Lesbian.” My daughter has also observed that the title of “lesbian” is also frequently used to define woman who refuse to accept stupid white male talking points. This definition may be the closest to hitting the nail on the head. I can’t help but think of what KKKarl did to Ann Richards. What better way to dismiss the bloggers of the Lake than to call them all uppity lesbians? It is the gender specific version of dirty fucking hippies.
Jane is a fighter. Repugs forget that at their peril. This guy Dutson will bring even more traffic to the lake, and I’m sure many people will stick around. The water is great. As is the inspiration. And passion. And information. And guts. I don’t know how I would get through these dark days if not for Jane and Company.

each time an intelligent caller states a point on npr, it gets aired, and has an effect..each time someone submits a question to the wapo live discussions, it gets read………keep up the dialogue, dialogue is welcomed from both sides…….rhetoric is not……

Yeah … like just *when* is he planning on honouring his subpoena to talk to Leahy and the HJC? Huh? *crickets?*
fdl reader @ 292
Or whether, when Rove gets Religion, he’ll join either John Ashcroft’s congregation, or Mitt Romney’s?
The FDL article right before this one refers to “MalKKKin”. If you’re going to ask other people to be civilized, it wouldn’t hurt to do a little better yourselves. You can criticize the likes of Malkin quite effectively without resorting to making fun of someone’s name.

Technically speaking, the DOW will hit 12,000 before it goes back up to 14,000.
Oh, now, really, I rather like Gail Collins. She can spin a sentence and often….
Oh? Not Gail Collins? Susan Collins, of Maine?
Never mind.
As an update :
Lance Dutson’s website is now up, but you must give him your email address and then he will give you a password in order to post there. So now i guess susan collins’ personal blogger only wants to allow “certain people” posting on his blog.
I’m confused. You didn’t swear once in that press release.
There was mention of Air America and advertising a ways above. MSNBC is advertising on it on the the Seattle station AM 1090. A hopeful sign?
Sounds like a good response to the sites complaint. Keep it up.
Ghostman @ 27
Woot!

The dollar is down about 30% from when the Euro was first introduced. The mortgage industry isn’t equivalent to the entire American economy, but it is significant. I’d guess the market drops 5-10% (very rough guesswork). How much is off it’s high now? Unless something more happens, like spillover causing shakeups in other sectors, we might be alright. But, I’m no expert on the mortgage industry and if it hits banking…then we’ve got much bigger problems.
rwcole @ 172
Now now, let’s be civil.
Besides, we save that kind of foul-mouthed rhetoric for our friends. Heh.
OldCoastie @ 197
It is a lot because the problem is big. They’re loaning it short-term I guess to let businesses handle a liquidity problem.
The big question is whether they can get their natural cash flow back or somehow spread out their debt payments so they don’t go belly-up. If they can’t get their house in order, then they’ve got big problems.
Liquidity problems can be either temporary or permanent — we’ll know soon which they’re facing.
IrishJim @ 241
Something like 60 mortgage companies have gone bankrupt in the last few years and recently Countrywide (country’s largest mortgage firm), American Home Mortgages (IIRC) and Washington Mutual (I think) announced big problems. They’re all stuck with underperforming mortgages.
A LOT of people have lost their homes, but the MSM has somehow failed to make that point to the public.
I guess it was the Iraq Occupation which got all the attention.
“I’m deeply offended that Senator Collins would speak about professional women in such a degrading and offensive manner,” said Hamsher.”
Yeah … kind of like telling another woman blogger, “I change my oil, but …”

I nearly fell out of my chair when this post was brought to my attention…I guess you all don’t find anything TRex-the-Train-Wreck writes to be at all offensive – despite the fact that he regularly and viciously attacks people on the basis of their looks, their weight and their gender. Commenters left this place in droves over the summer and in the early fall – why? Maybe it was the misogynistic and foul-mouthed posting – the kind that got people savaged and banned for objecting to it, and got the notice of other blogs. I can’t be the only one who remembers Pach and Christy and Jane and Train Wreck piling on to defend it – and then fell all over themselves with blog-therapy sessions on the subject of civility.
Jane’s always been defiantly in-your-face, and happily sent people packing because she wasn’t going to allow the “word police” to tell her how people could “talk” – which is her right as the blog owner – but if this isn’t the biggest case of the pot calling the kettle black, I don’t know what would be.
You reap what you sow – get over yourselves.
And thanks for the chuckle.
Posted on _PPH_’s complicit “portal”, e.g., Carl Natale, & Co.
Thanks again!
My post on _BDN’s_ “portal” is awaiting moderator approval.
Feel free to vote in their unscientific virtual “poll,” folks.
Collins’ myrmidon certainly missed the irony in calling FDL a radical “FemBlog” when they actually support a MALE candidate who has progressive and RATIONAL positions on a wide range of issues.
Perhaps Collins thinks that Women should simply vote for her because she has the appropriate genitalia and cleavage ?
Maybe her view is that “Women’s rights” stops at the point when they criticize HER? Don’t DARE THINK! Don’t DARE “petition” one’s REPRESENTATIVES!
I suspect Suzie is in DEEP DOO-DOO (oh, there we go with the potty-mouth, sorry) in her internal polling. She sees her numbers in women voters going down toward those of Cheney and Bush…and has unwisely chosen this route to attempt to bolster them.
Maybe if she was a bit more concerned with her own positions regarding Iraq and our Constitutional Rights, than some “unimportant” blog…frequented by some sliver of Mainers.
How strange that she and her staff even bothered…unless the reality was far different!
Siun @ 244
Quarterly, or annually? And does this guy work for others?

I have known about FDL for a couple years. I read several of them, it is both addicting and time consuming. One thing that I really like about the blogs is the things I learn. In some areas, I don’t know more than I know.
In another way, these are kind of like an extended family, especially this one. “Bring the coffee…” I think that is one of the things that has hurt this country, is the loss of the extended family, the way it was in the ’50s. Plus a whole lot of other things too.
I don’t know this, but I thought that FDL was a MN blog. Maybe there are a lot of MN people on here. When the bridge went down, there were a lot of posts that sounded like they were from Mpls.
