In our earlier press release, we identified Steve Abbot, who wrote the letter on behalf of the Collins campaign calling for a “civil level of discourse,” as Collins’ campaign chief of staff. In fact, Abbot is her Senate chief of staff. Correction duly noted.
It does, however, raise an interesting question. What is Abbot doing working on the campaign? Is this something he is doing in his spare time, or is he being paid by the federal government to do so?
No doubt Collins’ good friend Joe Lieberman can give her advice on how to handle the bloggers who criticized him for his sleazy campaign tactics and are now calling her out for engaging in the same. I think it would be nice for such close friends who share nearly identical voting records on the war and an abiding love of George Bush to come together for solace when their war mongering extremism gets challenged online.

JANE!!
I’m embarrassed.
TRex @ 2
Look again, Trex!!! :P
DAMN you, LS!
You ruin EVERYTHING!
lots of new names around here lately. somebody send candy to Collins for all the free pub!
Yeah, Lieberman does a great job handling bloggers. Which reminds me: what’s Dangerstein up to lately?
Jane, I am so glad you responded to this quickly but I’m not surprised.
Sock it to ‘em Jane!
I don’t know how Steve can split his time like that. Working on a campaign requires major dedication. Maybe he can occupy two different places at the same time. Very rare.
Good afternoon Jane, friends.
Republicans do not think that any of the rules apply to them. Rove made it quite clear that the govt exists to further the needs of the Repub party, didn’t he?
TRex @ 5
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! I knew it was coming up, because Christy showed up downstairs…and then the refresh began to spin and spin..sure sign.
Hey, wittle Wick Santowum is feeling left out! He was best buds with Susie, too!
TexBetsy @ 11
He makes it clear that he wants it to be that way.

EvilDrPuma @ 14
But doesn’t that supersede the constitution?
EvilDrPuma @ 7
Whatever he’s doing, he’s doing it with that patented, spittle-flecked DANGERSTEIN frenzy, bless his heart.
Hmmm…so are we as taxpayers paying to get called names?

TexBetsy @ 16
That’s exactly the kind of detail he doesn’t want you to notice.
…spittle-flecked… …frenzy!!! Tell’em, TRex!!! ;-)
Jane? Old Ebbitt Friday night? We need your X-Factor!
Odd A. Mommy and I will be at the front desk waiting for you.

But…but…not for him. He’s a Republican.
Somewhat off topic:
It appears that you “foul-mouthed fem-bloggers” have crashed Susan Collins’ blogger’s website after you demanded an apology and Lance’s firing!
http://www.mainewebreport.com
I can’t get in, can you?
Way to go girls….boys! :-)
QuakerGirl @ 25
Sorry, I forgot :)
TexBetsy @ 21
Since Flossie has moved on, my better half told’em to move on…! Still no break in the clouds, but, only sprinkles today!!! *g*
Tying Collins to Dubya might be a good campaign tactic for Allen. The sycophancy seems apparent in previous photo.
I still find it hysterical that Collins’ blogger finds us offensive when in actuality it’s Collins’ voting record and the company she keeps (LIEberman, Santorum, McCrazy) who are!
Oh the irony! I’m actually loving the irony today. It’s put me in a great mood. ;-)
Kay at 26 — Actually, there is some question about whether they took it down to try and figure out what to do — or whether it was so poorly put together that the increase in traffic from their asinine stunt overwhelmed their servers. Either way, not good for Mr. “Fem-blog.”
KayInMaine @ 26
Yes, I can get to the ugly thing, unfortunately. They’re making a real campaign goal out of attacking left-wing bloggers, aren’t they?
*and George W. Bush….her BFF! Sorry, forgot the big one in comment #30.
KayInMaine @ 26
QuakerGirl @ 3
Why? I loved your SF tale in the last thread, btw.
Christy (from prior thread),
About knowing one’s enemy.
Who is the enemy today?
OBL?
Bush? Cheney? Rove? Etc.
I think Americans’ biggest challenge today is ascertaining the enemy.
GWB has done far more damage to this country than OBL.
Americans, in my opinion, are told who is their enemy and have been conditioned to act accordingly.
Step by step, Americans have been taught not to think critically. And I’m not talking Joe 6-pack. I’m talking about folks who, on paper, have been well educated.
Getting wild up in Maine:
http://www.mainewebreport.com/…..fake-hate/
You know I have been thinking of the West Wing episode in season two where Charlie is talking to the computer repair guy and introduces himself. The repair guy already knows who Charlie is, of course, cause the white supremest hate group that were gunning for Charlie for dating a white girl ended up hitting the president and one of his deputies. The repair guy said something like “Well, if they are shooting at you, then you must be doing something right.” That’s how I view the shot that was fired off at FDL. If we weren’t making a difference, they wouldn’t feel the need to attack us. And bravo for Jane and company for calling them out on it.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 31
I apologize for the blog whoring but it’s related. Here’s what Collins got for $25,962:
http://whitenoiseinsanity.word…..for-25962/
If you take the link off, I’ll understand. :-)
She apparently has an imbecile for a blogger/Internet Director if his blog can’t handle the heat of the fire he’s caused in the past day. Or…maybe you Pups are just dynamite to her campaign! Don’t know but I am having a wonderful evening at the moment. LOL
OT..carry over from last thread..Re: Mike Huckabee..
A good place to start research would be the Ernest Dumas pieces in the Arkansas Times newspaper.

EvilDrPuma @ 22
I’m sure Timmeh will clear that up for him in no uncertain terms.
QuakerGirl @ 10
It’s really very simple. He just does what he and his boss wants. IOKIYAR ya know. ‘Rule of Law…..’ what’s that?
Of course they can always ask Abu Gonzo, he whom the ‘Spinless Dems’ continue to allow to lie to their face, for a legal ‘opinion’ he bein’ the AG and all…
Whoopee, a blog war:
LGF
LS @ 37
Interesting logic there. The same person–under one or more names–posts both on Collins’ site and a left-wing blog. Therefore, that person is a plant. Worthy of Mr. Spock, that is.
Evidently there is no difference between campaign chief of staff and Senate chief of staff. They have learned their lesson well from Karl. What’s good for the GOP is good for the country, whether you like it or not.
Oh, I just had a civil deposition and the lawyer wouldn’t buy my “I don’t recollect remembering that” answer or my claim to executive privilege because George Bush may need my candid opinion on something some day. He asked me how a common citizen could claim executive privilege, and I responded the same as the Republican National Committee can.
Hmmm… go figure!
Peace, and most of all LOVE!

Jane,
Right On!
Des Moines seems to be a hotspot today. We had HRC, Biden and Ghouliani at the Iowa State Fair today. Ironically, it was also the celebrity Cow Chip throwing contest.
If you do not know what a Cow Chip is, you do not want to know.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 31
I’ll take Door # 1, please.
LS at 37 — HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You have GOT to be kidding me? The IP traces back to Road Runner Holding Co. LLC — which is a cable modem from a national cable company. And they are going to say that all people who get cable modem service from this cable company are involved in some grand Kos conspiracy. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
OMG — even with my limited tech skills, that’s so transparently sad…bless their hearts.
IrishJim @ 49
And if you do, you know how appropriate it would be for Republican candidates to throw them.
how come skippy never gets a good blog war going?
LS @ 43
It’s in Yiddish!!!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 51
Collins’ campaign apparently borrowed their Internet experts from Lieberman as well.
LS, Linking to Collins site is one thing but going to LGF no thanks. I live among enough red necks. Please share what you read because sometimes just linking to a site creats the impression of high traffic for ads.
LS @ 43
Now that is strange…when I hit the link, it goes to a completely different site in a foreign language.
Jonathan @ 36
All of those you mention are heads of the same vile and destructive creature. One whom everyone in D.C. has been worshiping since WWII.
Look upon the evil and get ready for the most important fight we progressives face. The destruction of this.
LS @ 57
No, that is a right-wing blog, but you can be forgiven the easy mistake. ;-)
LS @ 57
Oh please, let it be French.

CTuttle @ 54
Go to the bottom of the Collins link I posted to get to the Kos smear..then go to the bottom of the post to the LGF link…it takes you to another anti-Kos smear. When I cut and pasted the url…the one here, you are right, it comes up in yiddish. What the hell is all that about?
LS @ 43
What the hell is that, Cyrrilic?
Balrog @ 24
indeed! I trust that FDL would not want an oddwoman such as I to be the sole ambassador welcoming our distinguished Balrogian guest to the capital city.
It’s an Israeli Defense force mews site in Hebrew. Here are the top two stories in translation.
EvilDrPuma @ 52
My sentiments exactly. HRC created quite the Prima Dona scene with the Secret Service and roping off a path so “People wouldn’t get crushed”. I’ll give her props for showing up and honoring the tradition. I don’t think she scored any points. Just winning the curiosity and familiarity contest right now.
Skippy!
Nobody wants a blog war with a kangaroo!
It would be too one sided.
Hebrew, folks, not Yiddish. Completely different vowel systems.

btw, for those who don’t know, Road Runner is the Time-Warner Cable internet service. Which only covers the whole freaking country — we deal with IP issues with them all the time with SPAM and such. HAHAHAHAHAHA Oh man, that’s just hilarious…and this is supposed to be her IT professional? I’m a complete tech-challenged baby when it comes to this stuff, and even I know how ridiculous that is.
The point isn’t that there was a bad comment, it’s that they left it up for more than twelve hours. That’s just wrong. And unprofessional.
Lance appears to have re-kibbled the server hamsters. His wee site is up again.
How easy it would be for me to ask a friend (say in another country) who isn’t much interested iin blogs, to leave a nasty message on Ms. Collins site. why use my name if I want to be anon? Not that I have, or would. I’d probably use my real name.
TexBetsy @ 69
Sorry, Ma’am! Same lettering tho…!!!
LS @ 72
Wow! If you go to LGF, and scroll down, you will see the Kos story. I went to the Kos story, cut and pasted the URL and it comes up with this. WTF?

That’s LS @ 63
That’s because little Chuckie Johnson doesn’t like people coming over from sites here in the reality-based community to see the vile spewage on his site. Seriously, he blocks referrals from certain sites, this one included.

Nice smackdown Teddy.

Not in newspapers, or anything printed for children past the 3rd grade, but if it were Yiddish you’d see the letters aleph, vav and ayin floating all over the place.
LS @ 57
Oh wow. Well, that means you accessed Little Green Footballs, because no one can figure out those freepers when they talk! See? Nothing weird happened. :-)
Quicksand at 85 — That’s absolutely correct. But they also track links coming in and we always end up with a swarm of idiots. So no linky to them please.
From the Kos post at LGF:
“Markos “Screw Them” Moulitsas must be feeling a little beleaguered about the hateful content at his web site. He’s spent the last week protesting to the media that 1) the hateful content doesn’t exist, or 2) it’s “democracy at work.”
But today he’s going around cherry-picking unregistered comments from Republican blogs, and posting overheated, deliberately distorted attacks like this: Daily Kos: ME-Sen: Susan Collins wants terrorist attack on SF.
Under the Collins campaign’s own rules, anything written in the comments of a blog is representative of those who run the blog.
So since the Maine Web Report is run by Collins’ director of online communications, we can say this comment essentially came out of Susan Collins’ mouth:
Arthur Frain, Portland ME
Aug 14th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
You know what this country needs? Another terrorist attack. Take out SF or some other city full of dirty libs, and then the country will rally behind the GOP for protection.
Yeah, this is a ridiculous game, but if they insist on playing it…
(And yeah, I’ve got a screenshot for when they try to delete it and pretend it was never posted.)
Of course, Susan Collins didn’t say what Kos directly attributes to her. Markos is quoting from an anonymous comment left at Maine Web Report, a blog run by Collins’ director of online communications—and that blog doesn’t even represent itself as affiliated with Susan Collins. Markos’ post is so dishonest it’s almost amazing. (Oooh, but he got a screenshot!)
Most of the hateful content that’s been brought out recently by media has appeared in Daily Kos “diaries.” Diary posts at Daily Kos are not comments; they’re blog posts, by registered users, they’re monitored, and each diary generates its own thread of comments…..”

Heh, my puter’s liberal bias wouldn’t let me contaminate her Hard Drive, I’m guessing…!!! ;-)
I called Susan Collins’ blogger this today:
“her pasty white, feminine fingered, stuck in the 1950’s, ridiculous, out-of-touch, jackboot licking, red armband wearing, “I have to lambaste liberal bloggers because I can’t bring up Susan’s voting record because we’re both ashamed of it!, blogger”
Am I officially a foul-mouthed fem-blogger according to the rules & regulations set forth by Susan Collins thru her blogger? Gawd I hope so! I’m having a great night. Have I mentioned that yet?
FWIW, I think someone on FDL (I don’t know how to do it) should daily present here RW talking points and perhaps analysis.
It’s one thing to attack or dismiss right wingers.
It’s another to confront them head on, not ad hominem.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 51

Ahh Mommy, why can’t we have some fun…!!! *g*
Christy: I assure you, I wouldn’t. I suppose it’s an especially nasty type of sock-puppetry. See- my real name is Kathy. (I like Fozzetti tho)
Steve-AR @ 93
sorry. Christy was relaying facts about how stupid the post is at LGF. I say facts don’t matter to that rabble – they are impervious to facts. Hopefully, Bill Orally is dumb enough to pick up their idiocy and broadcast it.
CTuttle at 99 — Because that sort of fun creates an enormous amount of work for our moderators, including wading through an enormous amount of nasty, vile invective and the occasional threat lobbed at Jane or I, that’s why. You don’t have to clean it up — we do. And I’d prefer to get some sleep this evening.
Once the “evil bloggers say bad stuff about us” stragegy fails, Republics will have to fall back on their older strategies. They will try to make next campaign about pornography, abortion, the death penalty, or any combination of these.

Christy Hardin Smith @ 102
hmm. always wondered about that. Hopefully someday that will go in the book ‘History of FDL’…
LS @ 90
What crap. They left the comment up for over 12 hours and took down the friggin’ website before they came up with that story. They weren’t monitoring their website, they didn’t see it and would have let it sit there indefinitely if nobody had pointed it out. It would have come down from FDL or Kos instantly.
Might not have even made it onto a thread.
Our Mods are awesome.

On Monday, researchers working for the Military Religious Freedom Foundation ( MRFF ) uncovered evidence calling into question the veracity of the testimony given to the Pentagon Inspector General in the investigation in the wake of MRFF’s lawsuit concerning top Pentagon officials and US military officers who appeared in a promotional video, made for fund raising purposes, of an organization called “Christian Embassy”, an offshoot of Campus Crusade For Christ, that evangelizes Pentagon members, foreign diplomats, and White House employees. ….Gen. Jack Catton, Army Brig. Gen. Bob Caslen, Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks, Maj. Gen. Peter Sutton, and two other officers whose names were redacted “improperly endorsed and participated with a non-Federal entity while in uniform”.
The Pentagon officials who participated in the Christian Embassy video told the Pentagon Inspector General that they were confused about the status of “Christian Embassy” because the organization had been given free reign in the Pentagon for 25 years. Christian Embassy members had badges to enter the Pentagon un-escorted, with guests, and one Pentagon official who appeared in Christian Embassy’s video claimed he was under the impression that Christian Embassy was a “quasi governmental”agency.
But, here is Christian Embassy’s description of its mission, from its fund raising video :
“There are over 25,000 Department of Defense leaders working in the rings and corridors of the Pentagon. Through Bible studies, discipleship, prayer breakfasts, and outreach evens, Christian Embassy is mustering these men and women into an intentional relationship with Jesus Christ.”

“Never Give Up! Never Surrender!”
Not having kids I had to look this up:
Eeyore is a character in the book series Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne. He is a pessimistic, gloomy, old, depressed stuffed donkey who is a friend of Winnie-the-Pooh. Eeyore’s name is a phonetic representation of the donkey’s bray: an onomatopoeia, possibly derived from the baby talk name for the animal.
It’s really a pretty amazing turn of events. Didn’t the Collins campaign know that they were going to have enough trouble already, and then they go and call out the “foul-mouthed fem bloggers”? Doesn’t O’Reilly already look stupid enough, or are they actually such morons that they’re buying his crap and think it’s an effective campaign tactic? Either way, they pissed off the wrong plucky gang of misfits, which gets stronger everyday. Was this a good idea, to unleash FDL hell?
Can you imagine bestest buddies Collins and Lieberman on the phone now… um, is this a problem Joe? And she’s already a Republican, not about to use the false independent vote siphon–and I don’t think she can make a deal with Karl Rove like Joe did either.

Jane,
This is just a little OT, but I’m so glad you’re now in DC and pushing back on Eastern Standard Time. I imagine it won’t be long before you will be called to appear on talk shows where they need a cute, articulate, slightly off-the-wall fearless woman to get their viewership back. Can’t wait. I might just start being one of those viewers. This little riff with Collins is just the right thing for that, and we could all use more of your and Redd’s talk on the airwaves.

Huh? Who in heaven’s name gave these guys permission inside the doors in the early 1980s?
OMG – Cap Weinberger was the Secretary of Defense at that time. Sheesh.

Suggests Lieberman’s people are doing the site for Susan!
In the press release thread, everyone was welcoming new “Lakers” and explaining EPU and other terms.
I have been hangin’ out here for a couple of months, so not really NEW, but maybe someone would explain *crickets* to me? It isn’t always clear from the context like some of our other little code words…
And I love it here at the lake. I start here, go elsewhere for news or views, always come back to read the comments. You feel like friends.
susan smells defeat….. she’s desperate i tell ya ;o}
jonathan at 142 says-”I’ll admit I’ve done nothing today but grouse.
I have contributed to ActBlue candidates in the last few days. And called Chris Murphy’s and Joe Lieberman’s office.
My point is this. Those in power in washington are all together. They want to keep it exactly that way. We don’t count for much but may be annoyances.”
oh, my dear, don’t give up…………
Msmolly @ 172:
“Crickets” is a reference to crickets “chirping” — i.e., silence in response to something [so quiet you could hear the crickets chirp]. It’s a way of indicating something fell really flat: no applause, no reaction, just crickets.
BTW, my daughter’s name is Molly. Clearly a great name. And we refer to her frequently as Miss Molly.
msmolly @ 173
MsMolly,
You know the sound of a country night when all you hear is the sound of crickets chirping?
The commenter using *crickets* is conveying the silence of the country night, i.e., instead of the sound of the corporate owned media reporting something or congress doing something, the only sound that can be heard is the sound of crickets.

crickets means……comment made, no respose………..crickets…….like a silent summer night……..when you are talkng to yourself, and noone is responding…………

I’m pretty new at this MSMOLLY, but I believe *crickets* indicates the opposition in your agument is not expected to produce an answer.
So Collins rubberstamps the Patriot Act and then wants people to stop following her and recording her. Bwwwwwwaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh
Did anyone tell her that just following her with a camera and microphone like the Patriot Act without the steroids?

Point taken
Probably seriously EPU’d now, but thanks to mauimom, dakine01, dmac, and Ed Weston for the explanation. Makes sense (had some of those *crickets* when I was married ;-) and probably deservedly so, in retrospect).

I was thinking something similar: John Edwards receives attention from Matthews on Hardball. Maybe we should give Tweety a small break for a few hours. :-)
I wonder, do the presidential candidates blog much. Edwards should visit the Lake and other blogs while he’s on the bus. Can they do that, blog on a bus?

I sent the maintainer of that site a little note pointing out that given the nearly 1 million possible addresses in the RR address block in question and given that the addresses are reassigned frequently that the odds after 3 weeks of it being the same box were really very low. But, hey, I’m sure facts are just an annoyance. Anyone who’s run a real site and tried to ip block someone would have learned that already.

That might be their way of saying, “We stand by that comment.” or it could be their way of saying, “She never said it, so there’s nothing to apologize for. Move along, nothing to see here. What statement?”

If you’re not paranoid, but always wanted to be…watch the movie “Enemy of the State” with Will Smith, Gene Hackman and John Voight.
CHS @ 31 – I’m an internet professional, and the site had all the hallmarks of just slowing down – or crapping out – due to the traffic. esp. b/c sometimes you get a connection but it is dead slow. The internet info is that it’s hosted at “dreamhost” which as far as I know specializes in shared hosting. So they were probably just bandwidth and/or CPU restricted.
EvilDrPuma @ 44: yeah their proof of a “conspiracy” is laughably weak, and also wrong, funny also that none of them noticed the poster’s pseudonym is a reference to a 70s sci-fi bomb about a “fake god” – IOW it was never a “plant”. But they were just miserable failures at understanding the point Kos made: cherry-picking extreme comments is a stupid game where everyone loses. Hey, on the intertubes, no one knows I’m a dog. But more importantly, no one on the right denounced the idea that we need another 9/11. What does it matter who posted it if they agree with it?
CHS @ 51 and Darkie @ 183 are also dead-on. Though I will mention from personal experience that Road Runner changed their blocks around a lot recently, and their policies on rotating IP addresses are not very consistent. Meaning, you aren’t 100% correct, but your point certainly stands, even though it’s sorta moot in this particular case.
Mods, I’ve been censored b4 for foul-mouthed posts – rightfully, I think, I do have a potty mouth (and use a lot of pseudonyms). So please check my post very carefully. I wouldn’t want to make your “fem-blog” any more “foul-mouthed” than it already is.

And wouldn’t being on the Federal payroll make his activities on her campaign…ahem…a violation of the HATCH ACT?
Hey kidz! Why not do this? Mosey on over to Blue America and throw some money at Tom Allen, who is Collins’ opponent in the Senate race. I did. It’s fast! It’s easy! It’s fun!
$10…$100…whatever you can spare, everything helps our new fillibuster-proof majority in D.C.
Plus, it will make joe liarman really mad!

Rumor has it that Steve Abbott is running for Congress too. The plot thickens.
