Oh, noes!
While I was away from the computer over the weekend, Ann Althouse completely blew a gasket in my honor and I didn’t even know about it! Life is so cruelly unfair sometimes.
I guess now we have an answer to the old hippie Zen koan, “What if they had a flame-war and nobody came?”
Awwww, poor Anodyne Outhouse. Nobody outside of her tiny circle of readers noticed her pathetic cry for attention. I feel so bad. That’s like forgetting someone’s birthday. Worse, even. If someone is going to pee all over themselves trying to get your attention, then you should at least drop them a measly link or two for their trouble, right?
Well, I hope that the video presentation above makes up for my thoughtlessness and neglect toward our favorite Internet Laughingstock, bless her heart.

hey spiderpaws!
‘lo alfred
hey spiderpaws
funny man. fuckery man.
Evening, gang.
I hope my First Official Vlog entertains you.
Ah, targets of opportunity avail themselves once again for snarky pleasure of the Trex!
is there someone willing to do a transcript for those of us on dialups?
Hi y’all. Can’t sleep.
I see you have a few geisha waiting on you
good Vlog!!
what does that mean suzi? transcripts?
Nice Vlog T!
Damn, I nip out for some chocolate and y’all run upstairs.
LOL! Great Vlog!
Need to get the background music up a little.
spiderpaws @ 12
Oh, no, I wait on them.
OK Suzanne, he basically told AnnA that it would be a waste of his time to engage in a flame war. And he told her to rest. And held up a picture of cartoon breasts.
TRex,
Why don’t you vlog one of your trips to the piggly wiggle? It would be fun.
no no backround is fine….you can actually hear the paper shuffling…nice
spidey, i’m on dialup and if i try to watch the vlog, it will slow down my dialup so slow that i can’t moderate effectively. so i was asking for what was said in the video.
AZ Matt @ 17
It’s after midnight. I have neighbors.
I just wuvvv your cleavage, TRex!!! 8-)
Hey, wait just a goddamned minute! Boobs on the intertoobz? Who allowed that?
ahm in ur screen stealin ur pixels … is it manly to post this while snuggling with a 12-week old kitten?
Give me a few minutes and I’ll transcribe it for you Suzanne. My shorthand ain’t what it used to be.
that dialup causes a host of troubles
TRex, what do you think would happen if you ignored her completely?
Tex Betsy @ 28
Think of the snark we would miss.
I went over and read the post you linked to. In a moment I’ll be taking a short break to wash the taste out of my mouth. She had a link to a post where she said she faced you down. I followed that one and it appears that all she did was take a picture. Was there more or is that here idea of facing someone down?
TRex @ 23
C’mon, Big Boy, any Audio would be nice…!!! ;-)
trex, did you have to put little bandaid’s over the cartoon breasts to get them by any censor who might deem them obscene?
Is there a rule about boobies being in every vlog? I have no problem with that, just taking notes in case I ever make one. ;)
Tex Betsy @ 28
You mean instead of just saying he was going to ignore her?
Though I must say the fake tits were funny.
Mmm, back to that Home Depot. Looks like its getting hammered, and not just for all that Faux News support:linky
TRex @ 8
It’s perfect. Like the fake tits at the end. But we wanna hear YOU dammit, not the nice music…
silence is golden
“If someone is going to pee all over themselves trying to get your attention, then you should at least drop them a measly link or two for their trouble, right?”
Uh, no. :)
Cream rises. Shit floats. Not the same thing. :)
Just went over to the althouse entry. OK, I started laughing at the top where she says “I’m picturing chubby, pasty white” and here the line breaks and to the immediate right is that picture of her…
chubby, pasty white indeed…!
Anyway, I don’t get it. What is it about Althouse that people like to read? I know I’ve seen one or two vlog entries in which all she does is wave (and drink down) a glass of wine while rambling about something or other. W.T.F.?
spiderpaws @ 37
Hey, Spidey, with the Moon in Virgo and the Sun on the Cusp, vas ist los??? *g*
the sun isn’t on the cusp – yet
montag @ 38
Ironic that they both ascend!!! ;-)
Oh, spidey. My birthday is in two weeks. August 26th here. Any forcast for us Virgos and a few Leos upcoming? And the usual politics overview. *grins*
TRex is only white on camera. In person, green and scaly. Very tall. Long tail. In need of a dentist.
Tex Betsy @ 44
Well if he wouldn’t just gobble them down…
spiderpaws @ 41
I know… sheesh, with all the excitement in my neck of the woods recently, I must be rushing my B’Day!!! ;-)
soft, cricket-y kinda night here for a change
Wapo has an op ed up about Rovian blindness. Hits on a point that gets FAR too little press…Rove and the Clusterfucker hit the wall when they went after social security..The old people beat them to death with blunt objects—their own words..that was the end of the Clusterfuck presidency–particularly when after they’d been beaten five or six times and they showed up for more thrashings..
Clusterfuck– the would be fascist who was foiled by 80 year olds.

Therapod full-frame, 8.5×11″ flash-card style slide show…
Dear Ann Althouse…
Listen Lady…
For me to join you in one of these…
Piss-ant little Flame Wars that you love so much…
Would be a disgraceful waste of my time and talent…
But Good Luck finding someone else to boost your traffic…
And next time you want to try and start a war with me…
Send me an email or something…
And I’ll see if I can work you in…
KTHXBAI!
P.S. Try and get some rest Dear…
You look exhausted.
Lurrrrrrrrve,
TRex
Then the boob gag…
OK, Suzanne, here’s the whole thing.
Starts with Trex smiling at the camera. A lovely Japanese print hangs on the wall behind him. He holds up a series of messages that read:
Dear Ann Althouse
Listen Lady
For me to join you in on of these piss-ant little flame-wars that you love so much
Would be a disgraceful waste of my time and talents
but good luck finding someone else to boost your traffic
And next time you want to try and start a war with me
Send me an email or something
and I’ll try and work you in
KTHXBAI
P.S. Try and get some rest dear
You look exhausted
Lurrrrrrrrve
Trex
Finish with Trex holding up 2 circles with dots in the middle to his manly chest, all the while smiling like an altar boy with a devilish streak.
newtonusr @ 51
Woohoo – thanks newton
very snarky, TRex.
rwcole @ 48
As the stock market and the economy go into the tank, we need to remind the voters who wanted to “privatize” the SS program.
Yay, TRex vlogging!!
And why did I watch that stoopit Althaus vlog all the way thru? Fiance walked past halfway through and asked “When did fat Debbie Harry get a blog?” Notice also the appearance of the obligatory mimosa at 6:18.
I like that she had to pad the vlog with extra insults. And that she sez “Uh?!” and corrects herself to “Duh?!”
Otherwise I’d like that eight minutes back please.
thanks, persi :)
TRex, you crack me up. That video was hysterical. Especially your expressions. Poor middle-aged crone must be really hitting the bottle now. No kidding, at her age, she really shouldn’t drink so much.
no politics tonight after the roughing up I got last time and the snark! you don’t deserve my reports unless you kneel politely and beg…meanwhile aliasofwestgate, let me see if I can tune in on you….gimme a few minutes here…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Nice touch, TRex, with the stylistic tribute to Dylan ala Subterranean Homesick Blues
CTuttle @ 24
CT: How is the hurricane in your parts? I wanted to give all our island pups a shout out. Stay Safe! Thinking of you!
lolo
Sorry to duck out there. My mom called. We’re a family of night owls. My brother usually beeps in when I’m talking to her.
Suzanne @ 59
Yes, yes!!
Trex,
She’s not worth the bandwidth. She’s a narcissistic alcoholic who drinks red “whine” right out of the box. Your talents are wasted on her. Let’s Moveon.

Might as well be productive if I am awake :)
What if they gave a flame war and nobody came?
Love to see her traffic — bet it spikes tonite.
CTuttle @ 42
Yup, and so do helium balloons and farts. Doesn’t mean they’ve got the right stuff. :)
TRex, that’s a great vlog! Hearty congratulations! (Who’s on camera, or is it a web cam?)
Loo Hoo. @ 68
MacBooks have a built in “i-Sight” camera.
Tex Betsy @ 65
Liked the one with Plato. Gracias!
humboldtblue @ 25
HumboltBlue, you said something in the last thread about Patreas’ combat experience. What do you know?
TRex @ 69
So does my desktop iMac.
BTW, ygm.
lolo @ 60
It was downgraded to a Cat 2, they initially predicted it would be a Tropical Storm, then said at most it would be a Cat 1! I’m more concerned for the isles further along it’s path, right now it’s lashing South Point, the least populated region in all of the Chain!!! Unfortunately, my family home is there!!! Here’s a current pic…

Dang…where does one obtain way cool eyeglass frames like unto those?
Snud @ 74
I know, huh?

Snud @ 74
Right here.
TRex @ 77
Most excellent! Thank you!
They make all kinds of interesting people come up and talk to you.
I can’t tell you how many awesome conversations have started with, “I like your glasses.”
mulligatawny @ 50
Mama’s saying are you a panda or a mouse? Stop that squeaking, right now!
rwcole @ 48
I presume they leave out the key role of TPM and the blogs in whipping up the Dems for the fight? The senior citizens may have been an important factor as always, but TPM did more than anyone to tie that boat anchor around the necks of Bush and his congressional allies.
To take a line from a comment on the Ted Stevens investigation:
For Ann, the internet is a series of lubes.
Che’s Lounge @ 82
Yes. Tied-off Fallopian tubes… or lubes, as the case may be.
montag @ 83
In Ann’s case, mankind can only hope…!!! ;-)
Hilarious video Trex. One for the ages I think.
She’s tied on a few too many me thinks.
(skids in on stocking feet)… Hey, all! How the fuck are ya’? (foul-mouthed fem blog participant that I am).
See you got you vlog all fixed up, TRex! NICE! and still very, very funny!
so, spiderpaws pleeeeease? my birthday’s coming up on the 20th and I’d sure like to have a general idea of what’s coming…
please?
Che’s Lounge @ 82
Did you see those things she said about me? She’s got snakes in her head, man. I think she did a little too much of that LDS stuff. Back in the hippie days.
Glenn Greenwald said to me at YKos that my snubbing Ann Althouse on election night was the single interesting thing in her otherwise bleak Wisconsin landscape of a life and that everything she says and does toward me reflects the fact that she will never, ever, ever forgive me for not liking her and finding her interesting.
So now she’s stalking me.
Did you watch that video? Jesus. I started to wonder if she’s going to come down here to Georgia and try to boil one of my pets.
CTuttle @ 84
Ah, well, everyone has the right to procreate, but not to expect their progeny to be the living, spitting up image of George W. Bush….
finifinito @ 85
Are ya gonna archive it, fini? You know, for posterity…!!! ;-)
Tex Betsy @ 65
Great, TexB!
Please don’t tell me she’s from WI. I grew up there. You’ll destroy my childhood memories.
OldCoastie @ 87
fucking nice skidmarks! what do ya think your fucking coefficient of friction was?
TRex @ 88
A: She can’t find Georgia on a map, not with that mimosa in her hand.
B: We will rush to your aid should A be proven untrue.
TRex @ 88
We’ll protect you.
CTuttle @ 90
Well I already saved it to my YouTube favorites if you call that an archive. Thats where I keep all the Donita videos. I suppose its a bit of an FDL YouTube archive at this point.
Hey Loo Hoo, notice the crickets after your 71?
TRex @ 88
This has much Keystone Kops/Harold Lloyd potential, you realize? :)
Hi Loo Hoo,
Have you decided on a name for your ed blog?
Suzanne @ 93
Dang, accentuating the ‘foul-mouthed fem’ role, eh, Ma Cheri??? *g*
Trex,
She gives stalkers a bad name.

Going to try the sleep thing again.
Tex Betsy @ 104
Gnite!
Suzanne @ 93
well, let’s see – NO skidmarks, low coefficient…
btw – just who the fuck is Ann Althouse? I got her little vlog running and I have absolutely no idea what the hell she is doing!
(am I swearing enough now to be foul-mouthed? I don’t want to let the fans down)
Tex Betsy @ 104
G’night. Sleep easy.
CTuttle @ 100
Yeah, but I offset with the techie geekie math question (also investigated traffic collisions and knowing the COF and the length and type of the skidmarks is how you determine speed from skids)
This shit is too funny to be categorized as “fuckery.” Has Ann followed up and shown us her b**bs yet?
Tex Betsy @ 104
Good Luck, Ma’am!!!
If you have flame wars on the internet (and no matter how hard you try, you eventually do)… That’s a classy way of handling it.
I hope she gets lots of support. Group therapy perhaps? I’m in.
Now back to reality :)

Suzanne @ 108
I wasn’t disputin’ your physics, Ma’am!!! ;-)

I believe though that its at least halfassery so there is that…
well I don’t do predictions, remember, old coastie? I erect astrological charts with software and figure out aspects and then do the progressions to see what is happeining in your houses and where the action could be. It takes a few days. And I need more than the day of your birth.
sometimes I take a birthday (like in the case of aliasofwestgate) and tune into the name and date and see what kind of information and feelings I get…it doesn’t always work and one never knows since after I do it, people frequently leave the toobz and never say whether I got it right.
Suzanne @ 108
Okay, I give the COF as 0.25. Go!
well, I just finished watching AA… erm – that was a massive waste of time…
If that woman reveals her tits to you
We’ll have to call them
Thing one and Thing two!
Ann Althouse looked and acted drunk in her video. Was that a Scewdriver she was drinking?
OldCoastie @ 122
See, I wont even watch it bcause I know I will never get that time back if I do. Won’t do it, I already know its an embarrassing video her grandkids one day will see and say Grandma was psycho!
hi people…
quick question: I like to stay current with the latest reich-wing bloviators as much the next news junkie, but I am thrice-damned if I want to give the likes of HotAir or LGF or Capt’s Hindquarters any extra hits… is there someone doing a mirroring of their sites which lefties can visit without giving the smear merchants any brownie pts?
BTW: TRex… watched all of that Big Fat Quiz last nite… stayed up WAYYYY too late… laughed much… GOTHS WIN!!! GOTHS WIN!!!!! ahem… sorry… *slinks off into shallows*
TRex @ 77
Tis a circle with fashion, huh? My sixth grade teacher wore frames like that!

I KNOW OH MY GOD WASN’T IT AWESOME??!!!
YAAAAAAY, GOTHS!!
Suzanne @ 130
Those motherfuckers!
having never seen an althouse vlog is one of the few good things about being on dialup…
TeddySanFran @ 97
Done in your honor, good man!
Suzanne @ 134
You can’t make the shit up.
I have probably made a grave tactical error responding at all. I was going to let it slide, but then I got on the phone with my brother and he was all upset that someone would say that kind of stuff about his brother and, well…IT’S HIS FAULT!! PATREX MADE ME DO IT!
Loo Hoo. @ 134
and was very nicely done too, loohoo :)
Suzanne @ 134
Maybe that’s the purpose of our Tech Nazis blocking all that stuff.
Naah, they just want me to work. Oh well, must refresh comments again.
Okie doke, I’m off to bed. Gnite all!

Your eyes and ears have been spared the horror. I watched the one where she was watching American Idol. My favourite part was where she implied she didn’t watch the show much and then proceeded to give chapter and verse about each contestant, what they sang last show, how they did last week etc etc. All this with a glass of wine in her hand.
And to make up for my lack of foul-fingeredness fuckity fuck fuck fuck..
O’Hanlon and Cordesmann were on On Point on NPR today, and I forced myself to listen to some of it. (Had to quit before my throat got raw from yelling back at them.) I have to give the host, Tom Ashbrook, some credit, the intro mentioned O’Hanlon and Pollack dishonestly trying to portray themselves as critics of the war, and how their entire “fact finding” trip was orchestrated by the Pentagon (not in terms that strong, but not bad.)
Summary of O’Hanlon’s position, in response to questioning from an actual journalist:
“Though I have no theory of the necessary political reconciliation could possibly occur, I’m sure the consequences of failure are so awful that we must pursue an incredibly slim chance of success, no matter what the cost.”
Cordesmann, though wins the prize for the most blatantly dishonest argument, using the fact that it will take months to withdraw troops to claim that there’s no point in starting to withdraw. And mark your Friedman Unit calendars — if I heard right, Cordesmann claimed that if political progress isn’t made by early 2008, it’ll be “too late.”
Loo Hoo. @ 142
That sounds great. I’m glad you’re happy. When you’ve got it up and running, I’ll be a regular reader.
Alright, gang. I need to tear myself away here and eat and go to bed.
Oscar Wilde said that cats and mirrors are two things that it’s inherently unhealthy to pay too much attention to. I would have to add internet flame wars to that category.
persiflage @ 147
Funny, I’ve known a lot of serious academics who had their trashy, guilty pleasures, but they didn’t deny them–or defend them much.
Prof. Althouse seems to be doing both, without comprehending the implicit contradiction. :)

*Gasp* Am I being mocked…??? *g*
Trying to finish three pieces of music by next Friday. Scariest deadline situation in this century for me. But I found time to drive into Anchorage this evening for a Diane Benson organizing meeting. She’s in SE AK, making a lot of headway.
A thing that keeps coming up is the craziness that is beginning to overwhelm Don Young’s fight to keep his US congressional seat. Boith Benson and Jake Metcalfe, the two declared Dem candidates against Young, avoided sending groups to Young’s only public picnic in recent Anchorage history yesterday. I was going to go, but couldn’t. Apparently, the event was attended fairly sparsely, But a few people from Young’s camp and from the demonstrators got into it more than once.
Here’s a YouTube clip of one of the confrontations. The more I hear about Don’s weird BBQ, the gladder I am I didn’t go. The hostility there, according to a friend who went, was almost overwhelming.
CTuttle @ 161
No, not really. There was no mention of antimacassars or doilies. You’re okay. :)
TRex @ 154
I was going to respond with something incredibly witty…but dang, you said it all.
TRex @ 154
I am not one to jump on the bandwagon, fuck it, I help drive the horses.

Suzanne @ 152
I really don’t know enough yet, Suz, to tell you much. I’ll be sure to let you know when it’s up and running. I’ve gotten several emails and a call I missed and returned, but it summer for the NEA, I guess. I’ll sure keep everyone posted. I’m excited!

You have to go read the Vanity Fair article. What a piece of work.
They deserve each other.

I like melons…!!! ;-)
SteveAudio @ 176
That was me, but I’m from the Chicago suburb of Milwaukee. Superior is too far north (and to impart the evening’s lexicon – too fucking cold), though I spent time in Iron River, Beeeutiful country. Can I see your movie on the web?
TRex @ 201
Actually, what they deserve is a long, unhappy, vitriolic divorce together. :)
Hey it’s Judith now, not Judi, didn’t you hear? And make sure you book the extra plane seat for her Louis Vitton handbag if you want Rudy to show up…three seats, one for her, one for him and one for Louis

spiderpaws @ 205
That likely so that Rudy! can make a joke: “Hey, look after the bag in the other seat.”
Suzanne @ 198
Yeah, good night all you assholes. ***G***
Loo Hoo at #181,
I’m not sure who anyone is in the video. The guy on the left throws his drink at somebody offscreen to the right. Then another guy comes in and takes him out, then a third guy – or a fourth? – breaks it up. I think the guy on the left at the beginning was a Don Young supporter.
Okay, now Rudy! Ghouliani and John WALNUTS! McCain can’t both get exclamation points. I’m going to need a decision here.
Che’s Lounge @ 203
I’m loading about 2.5 hours, personal travelogue.

I think McCain is slipping into the muck, so if his hand isn’t outstretched and grasping desperately for help, it isn’t worth an exclamation point. He may simply be wanting to vanish into oblivion.

This is from the last thread:
Biden on a major face show (my term for the talking heat shows cause it’s just really faces they don’t show the whole head) said that the real way to punish bush and cheney is not to impeach them, but to wait until they leave office and then pursue normal criminal indictments against them. In the US, ex-presidents don’t get immunity from prosecution the way they do in CA and SA. He was later asked abut the ability by GWB to prevent this by pardoning everyone as he goes out the door. Biden replied that if it can be proved that mr bush was committing crimes at the time he issued the pardon which would have been impeachable, the pardon will not hold because the constitution says so. It was pointed out that for this to happen, bush would have to be IMPEACHED (not convicted) when his term of office ends. Biden’s reply was supposedly a big, cruel smile.
Now i’m getting this from the son of a friend who worked the green room of the show where he appeared and so it’s not verifiable. but it does make sense and may be the endgame that reid, conyers, pelosi and biden and maybe even Leahy are working towards…
I should have credited the commenter, sorry…but if Biden know something, you know Leahy does!

Me3 @ 236
Understatedly understated. Not exactly damning. Not exactly laudatory, either.
I like this letter, mainly because it calls out the fact that we are not safer now:
The Honorable Patrick J. Leahy
Chairman, Senate Committee on the Judiciary
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Jay and Pat:
On August 3rd the Senate passed and on August 5th President Bush signed legislation (Public Law 110-55) providing temporary six-month changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in light of the Director of National Intelligence’s expressed concerns about a recently-emerged gap in foreign counterterrorism intelligence collection. This issue was given even greater urgency because of the recently-published National Intelligence Estimate on the terrorist threat to the U.S. homeland, which indicates that, after six years of Bush Administration counterterrorism efforts, the threat to the homeland today from Al Qaeda is nearly as great as it was before 9/11.
I know both of you share my disappointment at the process that led to passage of the recent law, and at the flawed outcome itself, which you and I and many others strongly opposed. The temporary authorities in the new law will sunset in six months. While these temporary authorities are in effect, I support all efforts by your two committees to conduct vigorous and comprehensive oversight of their implementation.
I also know that your committees have been working exhaustively on sound options for a longer-term change to FISA, even though your work has been hindered by lack of cooperation from the Administration in providing relevant information. When the Senate reconvenes in September, I fully support your committees working expeditiously together and in a bipartisan manner to develop a longer-term statutory change that better serves American national security interests and comports with the Constitution and proper judicial and congressional oversight. I would like to see the full Senate consider as soon as possible a bill reported by your committees that addresses the deficiencies in the recently-enacted law and any other matter you believe must be addressed.
Thank you for your leadership on these matters.
Sincerely,
HARRY REID

Me3 @ 282
What’s not mentioned as further explanation is that Rove was rather devoted to his stepfather. His stepfather eventually retired to Palm Springs and lived a rather openly gay life, and Rove was with him as he was dying.
That says much about Rove’s ability to separate the personal from the political. If anything, it furthers the notion that Rove is entirely amoral in his political dealings.
That’s true, montag @ 283. One thing you’ve got to give Cheney credit for is not pretending about anything. He wanted war-he got war. And he’s never once said that it was a mistake.
Loo Hoo. @ 284
Well, neither has Rove ever regretted his attacks on gays for political purposes. In that sense, he and Cheney (and likely Bush) are all poured from the same crucible into the same mold. They will do anything for political power, and none of them have any personal or ethical twinges about doing so.
TRex @ 8
Yes it does indeed, thank you!
And I do agree with your mother. Such nice red hair she gave you! ;)
Loo Hoo. @ 237
Just how blanket a pardon can Bush issue for everybody? If Bush pardons everyone for everything they may have done then how do we get anyone to testify against him?
The only crime we got Bush on which we could prove beyound reasonable doubt without witnesses is war crimes.
Which I’m thinking the Democrats don’t have the spine for.
montag @ 285
Absolute power corrupts absolutly. When you can disable the prosecution mechanism at the DOJ…. You are untouchable by law enforcement.
things come undone @ 287
Actually, blanket pardons would work against Bush protecting himself from war crimes charges. A pardon has two major requirements–that the pardoned acknowledges wrongdoing, and second, that the pardoned gives up all 5th Amendment rights in matters related to the pardon.
Blanket pardons would mean blanket testimony without 5th Amendment protections, in Congress and in the courts.
Adding to #289, Libby’s commutation of sentence will probably be the standard for the rest of Bush’s term. By commutation, Libby is not required to give up 5th Amendment rights as a condition of commutation, nor would he have to admit guilt.
montag @ 290
I agree, and this crew is willing to accept the label “CONvicted Felon”
montag @ 289
Whats to stop them from lying without the threat of jail?
things come undone @ 292
Well, nothing, I suppose. But, any prosecutor worth his or her salt would have the perp dead nuts before obtaining testimony, and would work them to get the top dog. If they admit to the pardoned offenses, it just makes it easier to obtain further testimony. With a multiplicity of such witnesses, the chances of any or all being caught in a lie and being subject to new charges are much, much greater, thus providing leverage on getting the top dog.
The addendum to #293 is (bloody fookin’ editor is acting up) that no contemporary Dem finding himself or herself in office would proceed to prosecute Bush, et al, for war crimes. Too much chance the `pugs would try to do the same to them later.
Sounds crummy, but it’s still true. Most of these fuckers deserve forty years in jail and to be stripped of all their assets, but, it ain’t gonna happen–not in my lifetime, anyway.

Jacqrat @ 295
Well, stumbling-ass drunk will do all those things to you. :) Unless you’re George W. Bush, and then it all comes quite naturally. :)
things come undone @ 292
Impeachment… If they tell the truth on Bush while he is sitting, the GOP could have no choice but to support hearings. If impeachment overturns or prevents pardons, they get hung out to dry and can go to jail aka Nixon’s crew.
And I am telling you, there are a lot of similarities between this crew & Nixon’s. I have been suggesting the old 1978 H.R. Haldeman book “Ends of Power”… Haldeman clearly stated that when House & Senate Judiciary hearings and subpoena’s (including at that time a prosecutor) started coming… John Dean went and turned evidence on them because he could not secure a promise of pardon from Nixon.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._R._Haldeman
There are a lot of similarities here, so take time to speculate based on modern Watergate analysis. Nixon and Bush both: an unpopular war, enemies lists, coverup after coverup, domestic spying, politization of government, and poll numbers hovering near political absolute zero.
Haldeman was Nixon’s Chief of Staff and he had to go. Rove just went…
Me3 @ 298
Lots of differences, too. The Warren Court in no way resembles the Supreme Court today–point one.
Point two–the people today know that stonewalling–forever and a day–is their best defense. Don’t say nuthin’ to nobody, and everything’s cool.
Point three–in all ways, these fuckers learned from Watergate what not to do. They’ll hang on to the bitter end, because they know that the odds are now in their favor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Colson
If I had to assign Rove a parallel role in the Nixon administration… His job was a cross between that Haldeman (bio linked in previous post) and Charles Colson (bio above).
Oh, yeah, point four. During Watergate, there were Republican senators who were fed up with Nixon’s shenanigans and decided that the institution was more important than Nixon’s notions about the President always being right. They were ready to convict him on an impeachment charge if presented with one.
Today, you couldn’t find a Republican that thought that way with a Geiger counter. They’d be in lock-step support of party, not institution.
Then, you had Howard Baker and his father-in-law, Everett Dirksen. Today, you have Trent Lott and Mitch McConnell, whores extraordinaire.
Altogether, I think, there are more dissimilarities than similarities….

montag @ 299
I agree they will hang to the bitter end… But they are joining a growing list of people who have resigned. Politically toxic and all recent poll numbers show the odds are clearly not in their favor. They must do something desperate simply to have any hope of survival… The GOP is the laughing stock of an entire generation, and truly feared by a entire generation of hispanics.
Me3 @ 304
Umm, but, I don’t think that was your original point. You wanted to know why they weren’t going to have their asses handed to them. I think the reasons elucidated previously are evidence that we will never have that opportunity to grace them with their own behinds….
The country would be better off with them all in jail for a long time, but, that’s not going to happen.

Elliott, the irony is that I have a heater running in my office because they air condition the place down to the Ice Follies level.
Morning all. I see Nixon and impeachment are the topic. Well, there was a blog I read yesterday saying that Nixon and Podesta(?) had cooked up this plan whereby Podesta would resign (with great fanfare) then scurry off to some remote location and continue doing all the same things without the scrutiny that comes with being in the White House.
My hope is that history is not repeating itself. I’m hoping for a Rove indictment.
montag @ 301
LOL… GOP Senators did not get fed up with Nixon until he became a political liablity… They supported Nixon up until the _moment_ they didn’t. Colson was part of the Congressional Grease machine for the Nixon Crew… The GOP in Congress got fed up with him too.
No two periods or events in history are point for point comparable… But the last time a key player like Rove left after subpoenas, was during Nixon’s era and that bears some comparison.
The will of the GOP minority in the Senate can be altered by elections, which look bad for them: they have a lot more to lose than the Democrats. With Rove no longer playing poltical carrot and stick games that amount to blackmail in places like a GOP controlled Senate Judiciary… One or three of them may scramble for political cover in the “middle” where exposed crooks and liars are considered socially unacceptable.
Maybe.
Marion in Savannah @ 308
then I’ll change it to “Keep comfortable!”
My reaction to Rove’s departure is developing over time, I think. Now I feel a weight about it, a heaviness, a burden; but maybe that’s because we are about to come face to face with the horror of this Administration and and its assault on us, US and our Constitution.
Just can’t shake the unease. But I hope you’re right, solai, that Rove is indicted.
Anyone here hoping for an Imus return to TV?
Elliott @ 312
The words “Inherently Contemptable” keep coming to my mind. If these guys can get away with all they have done then armed bank robbery must be legal by now too.
Me3 @ 310
Umm, fifty-one Dems (then minus the Connecticut concern troll) plus three. Fourteen shy of conviction in the Senate.
Nixon resigned because he had no chance of surviving a trial in the Senate–he never would have resigned had he thought he could survive that process. If Bush’s behavior has been demonstrably worse than Nixon’s (and it has been, by far), and Dems have given up on his impeachment and conviction, I would think they know they cannot get the votes. That would suggest, I think, that the political conditions are quite different today than they were thirty-five years ago.
I guess that’s my main point.
It’s okay to want an impeachment and conviction today, because Bush, et al, deserve that–and more–but, looking at the current conditions, it doesn’t seem likely. Today is not 1973. Things have changed.
There is no John Dean today. There is no Alexander Butterfield. There are no people in this White House who put the truth and the people’s interest above those of party and President.
Maybe, I’ll be proved wrong one day on the above. But, I don’t think so. The evidence, so far, is against it.
Good morning from California.

Yet… Scooter has a felony conviction, Rove is gone under subpoena.
Your Senate numbers look OK, for now, today. But as I have mentioned, elections are coming… Bush-Rove are toxic with the country.
I am not here screaming Impeachment is gonna happen to ole George, but I am not ruling things out either.
Including things like Rove resigning with a massive cloud of blame & failure hanging over his head (every political cartoonist trashed him)… Libby already wearing a felony conviction on his bio. These perps now have dogs on their trails.
solai @ 313

solai @ 309

Enjoying the family being together and sitting by the Pacific and resting. And the seafood is heavenly.
Me3 @ 318
As I said, Scooter is now completely protected–by commuting his sentence, Bush has protected Scooter’s 5th Amendment rights and he can refuse testimony from now into perpetuity. Scooter’s a dead issue, legally, from now onward, unless some prosecutor finds new charges, which is most unlikely.
What has happened to change those numbers? Nothing I can see.
The only ones who think Rove is resigning under a cloud are those on the left. There’s no substantive evidence to suggest that he actually is under a cloud–and political cartoonists, from my survey yesterday, overwhelmingly showed Rove as Bush’s brain–no indication of legal wrongdoing amongst them that I could find.
Ah, well, it’s neither here nor there. Events will play out as they will.
I hope you’re right, but, I see nothing solid to suggest that. These guys are gonna skate, to my mind, sad at that may be. [Mod: edited to remove hanging reference]

The Nixon White House kinda dominoed until Dick was left talking to the portraits according to some accounts. Every one of the chits to fall had some kind of “plan”. The two dirty trick people who were most closely connected to the Oval office of the day were Colson and Hunt.

Okay, find me one person who can make him testify against Bush or Cheney or Rove without new evidence. Huh?
Not a single one of the seventeen or so Repug senators up for reelection in 2008 will run on impeaching Bush or any of his appointees. They will walk away from him, they will avoid talking about him, but they will not cross him or their party.
Bush has an outstanding subpoena, yes, but, that’s not like being under indictment. The WH has guaranteed him protection via executive privilege, and I don’t expect that to change. But, there are no pending indictments to my knowledge. All he has to do is continue to obey WH instructions and it’s unlikely this Congress will have him arrested on contempt of Congress charges. Not. Gonna. Happen.
Neither of those things are criminal offenses, however….

It does not always have to be criminal in politics, and the punishment administered does not always have to come behind bars. Rove leaving and the comment by the Senate Judiciary Chair leave both possibilities open.
