Mike Lux writes about the DLC over at Open Left, outlining a lot of reasons for their current irrelevance. But he concludes with this:
I think the DLC is in a defensive crouch that they may never get out of. On the one hand, as they always have been, they are afraid of Republicans every time they call Democrats soft on terror, soft on defense or when they say we are class warriors. But I also think, as Ford’s opening indicates, that they are realizing that they have lost the battle over the soul of the Democratic Party, and that their only hope for influence is if they can seem like they are reaching out to us. If they were sincere in that effort, I would be glad to work with them on issues where we can agree. But when they say they want to reach out, and then attack Harry Reid as playing into the terrorists’ hands, or attack DailyKos for its “anti-Semitic” comments, it’s hard to take them seriously.
I think Lux is being charitable. I don’t think Harold Ford was, is or ever will be “reaching out to us.” He went on Meet the Press and was conciliatory toward Markos to get his guard down so he could hit him at the end of the segment with charges of anti-semitism (which Markos battled back resoundingly). That particular canard is part of a more global, concerted effort to discredit the blogosphere by the right wing and it’s showing up on many fronts, today notably in the somewhat less than mentally healthy post by Susan Collins’ shills where we’re now a “foul mouthed fem-blog” (Thanks, grandpa.) As Kagro says, “And the mask comes off. ‘Moderate’ Susan Collins’ staff reveals the sneering, venomous underbelly of modern Republican campaigning.”
Harold Ford has a financial relationship with Fox News, and he’s happily carrying the water for the Republicans at this point to destroy the only messaging arm the Democrats have. He’s not a “centrist” as he was identified on MTP, he’s an extremist. If it’s hard to take him seriously it’s because his overtures are anything but serious.
BTW, you can give some turkee to Tom Allen’s campaign here. We “foul mouthed fem-bloggers” are doing what we can to defeat Republicans in ’08, although the men on our blog are feeling a bit touchy today and left out. You can’t blame them.

“Clearly” battled back!
“Thanks, grampa.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Love it.
The DLC is not down-and-out – their candidate is favored to win the nomination!
Yes, I think the DLC has lost its way…whether through money, greed, or what, I don’t know.
Yes, I actually enjoy reading this “Foul Mouthed Fem Blog” if you want to know the truth. I assume you have see that you have been categorized by lovely Senator Sue from Maine, right? (See Atrios at this moment)
(I am giggling though. These people really do not have a clue)
But, you’re only the best kind of foul-mouthed fem blog. We wouldn’t have it any other way. What morons these people are…
If that picture was a movie, you’d now see Harold reaching up and pulling a gun dart off his forehead.
Hey, at least she noticed that you’re women!
jnfr @ 10
There is that.
Every day that Ford, who has accused all the major Dem presidential candidates of supporting what Ford has characterized an anti-Semitic organization, stays on as chair of the DLC, is a day that the DLC becomes more marginal. The fact that his statements last weekend haven’t raised a bigger stink clearly shows how rapidly the DLC is being eclipsed by the progressive wave.
landreau @ 8
You’re OUR foul-mouthed fem blog ;-)
Seriously, though, it’s rather a hoot to look through…
I am pleased to see some hitting back at the DLC. HRC has strong connections to the DLC.
When I first listened to Ford when he was a candidate, I just didn’t like him. He didn’t smell right.
It seems Ford’s bringing to the DLC the political acumen that got him elected senator of Tennessee in 2006…
What about the foul-mouthed Republican Vice President, and the foul middle finger Republican President they so admire, support, and idolize…
OT-a bit.
I just received an email from Barbara Boxer’s office- an invitation to attend a meeting in San Francisco next week..
I can’t make it. Anyone else interested in asking about her non-vote on FISA, and about NetRoots…
Take a look at this pix perhaps.

Harold Ford = Joe Lieberman
I love it..if they slinging shit like “foul mouthed fem-bloggers” more women are going to get pissed off and vote Dem. 30% of the voting population is beyond hope..it’s the swing 10-15% we need to pick up. From polls, married women are equally split Dem-Rep..huge inroads should be able to be made in this demographic.
My understanding is the DLC and Gore have no use for each other.
Long live foul mouthed fem blog.
LS @ 17
They aren’t ‘ladies’. (Coded anti-feminism.)
Came for the Plame. Stayed for the snark and the intelligent commentary from folks smarter than me, many of whom are lawyers. (Aint that right Scooter?). Now I find out that it’s a “foul-mouthed fem blog.” What the hell, two words — f**k ‘em.
I got your foul-mouthed right here, Senator Collins.
Granpa, pops: Lance certainly looks like one.
Harold Ford: It’s a good thing he lost that senate race. He’s completely sold his soul.
As I posted earlier, the latest Zogby Interactive Survey has a section on News/Politics/Voter-opinion and Blogs..It seems like the lefty blogs have kicked over the termite mound.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 19
The pic nails your point about HRC and the DLC.
Busted — in response to your query in the last thread, dangerstein unfortunately hasn’t disappeared completely — he was quoted in this recent McClatchy article mouthing Republican talking point that “the left” is somehow against national security.
Anyway, that commenter on Kos didn’t mean to say that Lieberman should be gassed, he meant to say he should be de-gassed. Just a typo.
tell me that doesn’t look like a picutre of derek jeter
It’s only fitting the DFHs on the left have fem-blogs because the neocons have fembots.
Harold Ford Jr. isn’t running for prez. But another of the DLC’s Leadership Team is.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 19
Ah, yes. The company you keep. With friends like these…
Are you kidding?
It’s all I can do to tone down my potty mouth, get in there and give ‘em a few for me.
I don’t get it. If people pretty much agree with the GOP,even if it’s on the”lite”side of things, why in the hell are they calling themselves Democrats? Why not just join them and be done with it?
Or would they rather just have one party rule?
Redshift @ 30
Thanks for that, I wouldn’t want the little putz to get too far off the radar.
Unfortunately I agree with Sporkovat @ 5. HRC is DLC. In other words republican-lite.
that picture does tell a story doesn’t it?
How does having the support of the leading candidate for the (D) nomination make the DLC irrelevant????
Hillary and her husband made the (D) party safe for corporations and lobbyists, by promising that when bought, they would stay bought, and issues of principle or concern with their ‘base’ the lowly voters, or even once powerful groups like labor, any issues that arose could be dealt with by some harmless kabuki.
enjoy your DLC bashing now, if and when Clinton is the nominee it will be verboten.
Hi Jane & all:
I added a link earlier today, but had to rush to an appointment….
Lance Dutson is also Collins’s so-called “web weaver,” if ‘ya can believe it.
Strong feminist bloggers seem to be reviled from all sides (albeit, *in* Maine, or elsewhere out in the ether).
It’s *almost* hilarious.
Slap her murderous lying enabling arse, Tom!
…metaphorically speaking.
Thanks again, folks~
Kuchinich Slaps down the DLC
ironranger @ 15
He voted for the Military Commissions Act. What more needs to be said?
And..in honor of TRex, to show that he can be a foul mouthed blogger as well.
What kind of fuckery is this?
Sen. Collins does have some issues. She is being “bird dogged” by net roots hoodlums. Their goal is to intimidate or cause a disruption by recording Collins at a public event. The people Collins spoke with were stunned by the invasion into the Senator’s personal space.
But, even more shocking, these foul mouth internet hoodlums, were hovering over girl scouts and baby carriages. Everyone knows that a Senator is entitled to privacy, without being spied upon.
_________________ From the article:
The people I spoke with afterwards were stunned at what had occurred, and such an obvious intrusion into both the parade and Senator Collins’ personal space was a tactic that was untenable to those that observed it.[snip]
It’s disturbing enough to hear Tom Allen’s MoveOn and DailyKos friends writing things like ‘Joe Lieberman should be gassed’ , or to hear them talk about killing politicians in their internet rants. But when they begin showing up in Maine, hovering over Girl Scouts and baby carriages, and following people around like this, it makes the disturbing rhetoric much more alarming.[snip]
Trucking in gangs of hoodlums and foul-mouthed demagogues will do nothing to further the discussion of issues that are so critical to the people of Maine right now.[snip]
OT
Another shout-out to FDL’s own Christy Hardin Smith. See Adele Stan’s new article over at The American Prospect. Kudos indeed!
Jane you are so right on with this. I am still pissed about Sunday MTP. Accusing people falsely of anti-Semitism is the worst. Linking that comment then to Cindy Sheehan is worse than worst. I would expect the DLC to come out with some sort of apology or retraction. With none forthcoming, we can assume they feel the same way. Need any more reason not to vote for Hillary?
As to Susan Collins: I hope people are putting their minds together to find an appropriate Kiss Mobile for her and Bush, perhaps one with images of bombs and wounded soldiers, and of a miniature telephone pole to reference Bush’s spying. If Rhode Island could replace Chaffee (basically a nice guy) with Whitehouse, Maine should be able to replace Susan Collins with someone far better.
And a hint: The chart that was up earlier today (on Think Progress?) showing the amount of moneys going to the various states – it doesn’t look as if Maine (with 2 rethugs) faired much better than Vt. with none, though Maine is a much larger state. Do Mainers know about this?
OT. Where’s Murray Waas been?
This is my FAVORITE foul-mouthed fem blog of all!
Nemo @ 48
mine too.
Speaking of the DLC, when I was stuck in a waiting room yesterday, I was treated to this lovely bit of DLC fluffing from Joke Line. Did you know, for example, that:
How dumb do you have to be to swallow that nonsense? The presidential candidates will be sure to come around because the DLC is courting state and local officials? Even if it’s more than DLC self-promotiong, it still doesn’t make sense.
And check this bit of idiocy from our pal Al From:
Well, at least he admits they’re playing on the Republican half of the field, though why he thinks it’s a good idea for the Democratic candidates to be there too is still a mystery.
I wish these people could make up their minds as to just what demographic they really want to villify.
Is it the DFH’s or the middle aged white guy’s?
Oh, wait, now it’s the foul mouth female bloggers.
It must be terrible to be so paranoid.
Get a grip, we are progressives, liberals and main street Democrats.
Folks Like Harold Ford have no place in our plans for the Democratic party, just ask Joe Lieberman.
I used to be called a “fem” when I was in grade school, so I don’t feel left out at all.
I am and always will be “foul mouthed”. Fuck em if they can’t take a joke.
i’ve been a registered democrat for 37 yrs, & thought i knew a fair amount about whats happening politically in the US. i’m on the DNC, my senators & corngressman’s email lists, (as well as several candidates for pres), i read blogs, watch/read some msm, olbermann & stewart & send out a political email to about 40 busy friends every time something important happens.
the 1st time i ever heard of the DLC was when i saw ford on mtp on sunday. i wasn’t moved to investigate further.
BTW, just a note here. I find the commenters here to be very civil and not at all “Foul mouthed.” In fact, I would actually describe this place as being much more high minded than I am used to – and that is a good thing. Well, at times.
I would suggest that the Atriot’s are a lot more foul-mouthed and irreverent than either the Kossacks or the “Foul Mouthed Fem Bloggers” here: but I guess we never get credit for anything over there. :)
I like hoodlums who bird dog politicians almost as much as I like foul mouth fems.
Dear Harold:
Being afraid to look soft makes you look…..SOFT!
Sincerely,
jayt
There are women here? Why wasn’t I told? *ties bathrobe tightly*
Fuck that.
Now pass me some crumpets to go with my tea.

You must not have been here Sunday! :)
Redshift @ 50
Time Magazine’s circulation figures have dropped 17.1% over the past year.
The readership must be less than satisfied with Krauthammer, Kristol, Joke Line et al…
[snip]
Time magazine remains the nation’s largest newsweekly, but its lead over archrival Newsweek has narrowed considerably, according to circulation figures released Monday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
Time’s total paid and verified weekly circulation during the six months ended June 30 stood at 3.4 million, down 17.1% from 4.1 million during the same period last year following a reduction in January in the magazine’s rate base. Newsweek’s circulation stood at 3.1 million, virtually unchanged from a year earlier.
[snip]
I had no idea I was part of a “foul mouthed fem-blog” for so long.
Please forget you knew me.
Well, I’ll try not to take the “foul mouthed fem bloggers” club as exclusionary, but inspirational.
I am a foul (and sometimes fowl) mouthed liberal male blogger.
I am sure I am not alone.
Off to lunch. Be appropriately scandalous.
The DLC is a clearinghouse for what’s wrong with the Democratic Party.
Redshift @ 50
Speaking of the DLC, when I was stuck in a waiting room yesterday, I was treated to this lovely bit of DLC fluffing from Joke Line. Did you know, for example, that:
Ford is right: the Democratic nominee will come “home” when the general election rolls around because the DLC has become a crucial support and policy-development vehicle for state and local elected officials…
How dumb do you have to be to swallow that nonsense? The presidential candidates will be sure to come around because the DLC is courting state and local officials? Even if it’s more than DLC self-promotiong, it still doesn’t make sense.
Kinda makes you wonder if all the pooh-poohing of Dean’s 50-state strategy might have been fear of being supplanted by the DNC…?
perris @ 32
tell me that doesn’t look like a picutre of derek jeter
looks to me like a guy who’d piss his pants at the first sight of a big-league curveball.
(and ring up one foul-mouth credit for me, please)
Frank33 @44 says:
And nobody asked me? Am I not a hoodlum? Am I not a foul-mouthed demagogue?
Where is the respect?
Hey all, this foul-mouthed fem-commenter is back from vacay to report in. I guess “foul-mouth” means disagreeing with GOP status quo?? “Go #### Yourself” is OK, but “Get Out of Iraq” is foulmouthed. OK, I get it.
At a street fair in central California, I checked in with the Democratic Voter Registration booth. (My kids ran away having suffered more than one Present Traumatic Stress Rant about Dubya in a few car rides. Too scary.)
Anyway, the volunteers said that people were flocking to the booth at the weekly fair and the County Fair and boy are voters pissed! (surprise).
The straw poll reflected Hilary was tops both for Favorite Candidate and Least Favorite Candidate. Barack and Edwards were #2 and #3 for favorite. Gravel may have been #2 for Least Favorite but I don’t remember.
FWIW.
Gosh golly willikers, dingity dang dungit, hector and pishaw. I am feeling left out. I can be as foul mouthed as any o them feminalist blogger wimmin, and an by hades, them people saying that stuff agin this bunch o plucky cussed varmints here, if that don’t give you the galloping fantods and get your dander up, I don’t know what would. Dingity dang.
The progressive, liberal and left-wing branch of my Party IS the mainstream. It’s the DLC and those connected to it that is out of sync.
wesgpc @ 69
Well done !!!!
AZ Matt @ 42
great quote from Kuchinich:
Dear (D) Party pragmatists and strategists, please do not nominate a neo-conservative candidate for pres or vice-pres.
the magical invocation to always vote for the least worst might not work anymore, and a neo-con (D) candidate might lose to a more credible, less triangulated (R) version.
And, if your candidate wins and continues the occupation and expands the aggression to neighboring countries, then we’ll see who was really anti-war, or just using it as a political wedge issue.
and most importantly to the pragmatists, a DLC candidate like Clinton, just might lose the election. It wouldn’t be fair, it wouldn’t be pretty, but with the Rove-rigged electoral mechanisms, a hostile press corps, and the invaluable assistance of a gaggle of washington insider pollsters and consultants, a (D) victory would not be assured.
*xyz @61
TIME magazine is a minor subsidiary of Time-Warner. It doesn’t exist to generate revenue (much less deliver news) so much as to help create a favorable business climate, i.e., to elect Republicans and, secondarily, to advertise Time-Warner products (http://ir.timewarner.com/downloads/2006AR.pdf. It’s not a vehicle for news, and most of its subscribers are probably institutional ones, anyway.
The only way Ford survived that “debate” was to pretend he was not who he is, does not stand for what he stands for and does not do what he and the DLC do.
A typically smarmy performance from a more than typically smarmy politician who richly deserved his loss last year.
One Lieberman in the Senate is quite enough.
Am I foul-mouthed? I don’t think I’ve used curse words on FDL much, if at all.
In fact, I’ve been called worse. I’m a “water boy” that “rings the taco bell” according to one FOX News contributor.
I would not call HRC a Progressive. Blue dog lite? Perhaps.
wesgpc @ 69
Spew alert!
Mutant Poodle @ 63
For that matter, how does anyone (besides Jane and Christy) know anything about fdl demographics? Are they published somewhere? ‘Foul-mouthed fem-blog’ (do I hear ‘femi-nazi’?) is just a way of trying to put down Jane, Christy, Marcy, etc. Lord I hate this crap (neatly wiping potty mouth).
Yeah. A fem-blog. With breasts.
perris @ 32
Totally, I was trying to figure out who he reminded me of. It was either Jeter or Phil Rizzuto.
I lived in Maine for many years and I don’t recall the women of the state as being particularly delicate in their language usage.
sporkovat @72
Agree! The Dems can lose the prez election in 2008. HRC, IMO, would almost assure it. Beginning to think same about Obama.
jim oconnor @ 39
Whatever you want to call HRC, she is not lite. Dem-lite or Repub-lite. And I don’t mean that snarkily, I mean she’s the candidate with the most experience and positions of substance out there. She’s a heavy. The only one on both sides…..
Joe Lieberman is a past chair of the DLC.
brendan @ 73
Time used to be a useful, insightful, influential and relevant magazine about 35 years ago. The did a lot during the Nixon impeachment, for example, in bringing his crimes to light to a wide public. Forty and fifty years ago they were a major vehicle for news dissemination. Those days are long gone. Now the only way Time could be useful is if they printed it on much softer paper.
OT..The market is still sliding..The
Republicans have destroyed the economic infrastructure and robbed the middle-class tax payers to bankruptcy. When the low information voters can’t pay the mortgage and can’t fill the tank of the pick-up; the shit is really going to hit the fan. I think that is likely to be issue #1 for ‘08.
Since this is a foul-mouthed fem-blog, someone had better alert Ellen Goodman!
Sparkles the Iguana @ 83
It was, indeed, a “position of substance” to vote to invade Iraq.
Sparkles the Iguana @ 83
In my opinion, HRC is expert in one area only: politics. (Not law, for sure.)
AZ Matt @ 42
That Kucinich interview left me with my mouth hanging open….because Kucinich could not even answer Stephanopoulos’s question “what would you do if a dirty bomb went off in an American city?” Sorry, but if you can’t even answer that question, if all you can do is dodge and weave, you are a bullshit candidate and don’t merit serious attention. Kucinich blathered about something on p. 49 of Bob Woodward’s book which had nothing to do with the question. I’m not impressed that you know what’s on p. 49 of some book if you can’t even discuss how to deal with a nuclear disaster on American soil.
“foul mouthed fem-bloggers” LOL
Oh, Tom, the things you say!
I remembered this yesterday when I was watching V. Toesing’s husband on teevee. (Degenova (sp?) During the Libby trial, it was a Sunday morning and my husband was reading me something Miss Vicky had written, and I stormed through the livingroom saying, Well, she’s a lying, f*cking ****. Not a nice thing to say in public, but, this was my livingroom, and I say what I think here. He quoted me in a comment on NoQuarters site blog, saying that this was not HIS comment, but that of his girlscout, church-going wife and, still, the responses were foul. They called me a potty-mouth. Oh, ouch.
I read a link to this aforementioned article earlier here and walked away.
I’d rather be a potty-mouth than a potty-heart. Any. Day. So. There.
What’s not to love about strong, empowered women with beautiful hearts, clear minds and snark!
This is the coolest place in the universe.
She must be pretty good at algebra, she triangulates perfectly.
Just stopped by to congratulate Jane and Christy for their foul-mouthed femblogging.
I love the term “femblogger.” Can we now call Susan Collins a “femsenator?” Makes her sound all uppity and everything, I mean, why isn’t she at home scrubbing that kitchen floor?
Must….stop….laughing….*wipes tear*
I just received one of those Address Confirmation Notices in which Supervisors of Elections are required to conduct registration list maintenance of voting records (caging)
It came to my address but the name is absolutely no one I ever heard of. I have to check the box:
I still live at this address
I still live in Florida, but not here.
I no longer live in Florida.
There is no box for “They have the wrong person”. It says my voter registration will be affected if not returned within 30 days.
What do I do if it is not my name???? I’m also wondering that since it is not my name, and I was to just throw it away, would my own name vote not count?

Kucinich may have a lot policy positions that we agree with, on Iraq, health care, election finance reform, etc. but he leaves a lot to be desired as a candidate.
Jonathan @ 89
Certainly not foreign policy, either. She is far behind American public opinion on foreign policy. She believes in American power projection, the failed policy of intruding in the domestic affairs of foreign countries in the mistaken belief that what is good for America is automatically good for all right-thinking people, worldwide. Period.
Jonathan @ 82
I wish the risk-averse pragmatists, who are always urging caution and restraint of any actions like impeachment or defunding the war, would realize how risky it would be to their dreams of acheiving (D) power to have Clinton at the helm.
an AP article posted at the HuffPo the other day had many (D) elected officials worrying, off the record, that she would drag the ticket down in their areas.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..democrats/
Visited ActBlue after reading the screed from Maine. I can see the state of Maine from my window for
chrissakesoops not allowed to be foul mouthed as I am not of the female gender. The DLC has had nothing original to offer, no plans, no great ideas, nada. They regurgitate the rovian talking points and suck up corporate money just like repugs. Their candidates have proven to be worse than bad as they are turncoats. They give us (Democrats) lipservice and vote their corporate master’s way.

Would HRC work to bring an evenhanded and comprehensive settlement to the tinderbox that is the Middle East?

Now why would anyone call the DLC’ers republican light? It couldn’t be bcause DLC cheerleaders are busy as can be making up shit about how crucially important the DLC is.

In central CA? Where in central CA? My impression of the central valley (starting in Contra Costa County) is that it’s pretty red. While visiting there I have had to learn to curb my foul mouth.
Just dropped in to say, anything to do with Harold Ford I avoid, give wide berth, don’t want nuthin’ to do with. He reminds of that J.C. Watts.
Greetings, all:
Is there really any suspense regarding whom the d’s will select as their champion? It’s
Hilarous, of course, to speculate. So, were you each placing ‘educated’ wagers, rather than expecting and desiring ‘meaningful change,’ on whom would you put your ‘d’ money?
ALL we can do, alas, is HOPE that a little of the better (E) or the best (K) rubs off. Faint hope, methinks.
P>S> Always loved thoughtful, articulate ‘fems’ especially when they don’t mince words. Can somebody please tell us where the euphemism is?

And campaign reform? And changing the lobbying structure of American politics? How is she different on those issues?
Elliott @ 121
Whew! I feel better already…
HRC is heavy alright. She’s heavily corrupted and evil. Good luck winning with a candidate that 1/3rd of the party activists won’t canvass for, and that 1/10th of the party won’t show up to vote for. She might have a 70% favorability rating among Democrats, but the rest of that 30% pretty much despises her and everything she stands for.
Lets be honest here, her supporters come in two flavors. 1.) DLC dems that are terrified that a real Democrat might get nominated and elected because it would undermine their Raison D’etre. and 2.) women who have conned themselves into believing that she’s been lying her entire political career, and that she’s secretly a liberal because they want a woman President more than they want a liberal one.
Good luck with that. I won’t vote for her, and I’m probably not alone. At the same time, Wingnuts who otherwise would have stayed home will come out in droves to defeat her. She may win anyway, but she’s the least likely one to do so if you look at the facts on the ground and not “electability” polls. The Public thought Kerry was the most Electable too.
Sparkles @ 90
dodging loaded, bullshit questions is an important political skill, all candidates have to have it.
I’m sorry if you’re so concerned by old-style Cheney/Ashcroft, red-threat level fearmongering that you think these provocative hypothetical questions are so worthy, but they are propaganda.
The “War on Terra” (TM) is a Bush/Cheney conceit, and more candidates should have the guts to deny such entrapping frames.
OT to OKK — it was a rhetorical/occupational thing on my part. My alternate screen name would be Cooley’s Dictum.

I dont mean to be rude, but if Harold Ford’s approach was worth a damn, wouldn’t he be a senator? Why does the Democratic party repeatedly reward failure?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 111
Don’t you know the script yet? Of course she will, but Palestinian irredentists will reject it and we will hear our punditry recite Kissinger’s lugubrious aphorism…
ironranger @ 127
I’m surprised all those anti-big government Republicans have been so quiet on the creation of these new bureaucracies and government positions.
No, but seriously, aren’t you fem-bloggers all exclusively straight, white males? And virgins? Cause I heard that you were. All of you.
sporkovat @ 72
This is my worst nightmare. We badly need to get a democrat elected president, and although we obviously have favorites, any democrat is better than any republican. I also worry that some of us who feel betrayed by some of the less savory dem candidates might actually not vote for them if they’re nominated, and tip the scales toward the republican candidate.
Sparkles the Iguana @ 134
The correct answer is: grab the nearest bullhorn.
jim oconnor @ 122
Lieberman wants to stay in Iraq forever, HRC wants to start bringing troops home now and end the war before GWB leaves office. (Bringing the troops home will take 18 months.) Lieberman wants us to invade Iran, take out its nuclear energy facilities and wants regime change. I.e., Lieberman’s positions on Iraq are those of Dick Cheney.
Nafta I can’t speak on.
When I say substance, what I mean is when I listen to HRC, I hear an adult talking. When I listen to every other candidate I hear either a complete clown, an idiot, a scary monster, or somebody who is not quite fully formed in their outlook and experience.
TRex @ 137
Honey, I hope your tiara didn’t scratch that highly polished floor. *G*
cleter @ 142
Who are you calling Harold Shrum?
-GSD
Sparkles the Iguana @ 83
Sorry, but I disagree. The most substantive, forward-thinking, change-embracing positions I’ve seen are Kucinich and Edwards. Hillary made a big mistake giving everyone a peek at her true politics when she said she would continue to accept lobbyist money.
Soullite @ 130
ding ding, da ding ding!
Some remember that she botched our last chance at health care reform, thanks to the contributions of the insurance lobbyists.
cleter @ 142
It’s not the Democratic Party, It’s the Democratic Leadership Council. What’s in a name?
Grover Norquist is president of the American Taxpayer League when none of his positions appear to have anything to do with paying taxes or being American.
Ya gotta watch out for those Three Letter Acronyms. The TLAs will bite cha in the ass every time.
ironranger @ 127
I really don’t know what they were thinking(if at all). Homeland is just so reminiscent of the National Soc*alists or the Soviets. I remember thinking when they announced the Dept. of Homeland Security, Oh great, now we have our own KGB.

Don’t insult the public more than they deserve. They started noticing a couple years ago and haven’t stopped. That’s why there’s no support for the war.

Latest neo-con Groundhog Day moment.
Victory Davis Hansen calls Iran a “paper tiger” that the US should attack.
Funny enough, the Farsi word for paper tiger is cakewalk.

Sparkles the Iguana @ 148
Where does HRC say she wants to bring troops home now??
cleter @ 142
Not the Democratic party. The DLC
11 US deaths pending in Iraq (I believe 5 of them are the helicopter casualties, but I’m not sure). Per:
http://icasualties.org/oif/
“I’m not sure it would be fatal in Indiana, but she would be a drag” on many candidates, said Democratic state Rep. Dave Crooks of Washington, Ind.
In Indiana, it would be fatal. With somewhere around 45% of the country polling as they wouldn’t vote for HRC if she was the only candidate running for president, she essentially has to run the table with the rest of the country. She won’t do it here – she scares the farm-boys, and the wimmen-folk do as they’re told. The corpse of Richard Nixon would win here if up against Hillary.

the Democrats who Love Corporations group does not and will not speak for me.
sporkovat @ 131
Obviously the administration engages in fear mongering. But if a presidential candidate isn’t prepared to deal with the consequences of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, they’re not fit for office.
Just like if a presidential candidate is not fit to respond quickly to a Katrina-like disaster, they are not fit for office.
They’re two sides of the same coin, whether you want to call it Homeland Security, domestic preparedness, terrorism response tactics, whatever. It shouldn’t be a discussion about semantics.
I agree with Dennis Kuchinich that DLC types are substantially no different than neoconservatives.
yes I mean Hillary and Obama.

Yes. Sex/race vulnerability among the lizard brains, coupled with the fact that they aren’t liked very well on the left, makes them scary candidates in such an all-important race.
demi @ 149
You wore that tiara with that plaid shirt and those socks?
Pshaw.
Steve-AR @ 136
I wish I was wrong.
Sparkles @ 148: I suggest you look closer at HRC’s statements about Iraq. Nothing speaks louder than her lack of real support for Ned Lamont.
Also, one might suggest that believeing GWB about Iraq and giving him the authority he sought would make one an idiot or not fully formed in their outlook and experience.
Count me as a foul-mouthed, f*ggot blogger in solidarity with the all the foul-mouthed fem, butch, straight, and Martian bloggers and commenters at FDL.
Just sayin’.
I’m deeply offended by the words ‘homeland’ & war ‘czar’ because just inserting them into our vocabulary seems like a deliberate fu to this country & all americans. Someone probably thought it was cute, rove perhaps?
BTW, isn’t rove agnostic? If so, he was playing games as usual during his bye-bye presser invoking God.
I don’t know what the big mystery is here. The DLC is interested in one thing and one thing only: maintaining control of the party in as few hands as possible. The blogs are a threat to that control, so Ford lashes out in a fairly pathetic effort to paint Kos and others as being unworthy of a seat at the table.
The only problem is that the DLC has been made irrelevent by its own hand.
retirin’ in five @ 132
How about Cramers Rule? ;0)
Seriously, is this is ‘women’s issues’ blog, or an angry grrrl foul mouth femi-blog? What am I reading here? I want to know, right now. Seems like it should either be about cute cuddly womenly knitting and recipes and nice non-mass killing soft topics like econoimcs and education, labor relations, date tips, global warming, election integrity, and manicures, or it should be a pink pistol packing man-cussing psychotic femi-grunk.
Certainly for a Democratic blog, the proprietors are not submissive enough, which is a disappoining commentary on their prospects for reaching out to the mainstream pundits and political establishment. I hope they will learn, follow the lead of the manly DLC and get all nervous and have deep, and confusing and panicky, thoughts about their ‘dentity, ‘positioning’ and stuff, and whether they are not being codependent and neurotically submissive enough to what some slap happy, interested, hack spews over the innertubes or airwaves at a moments notice.
This blog won’t get into the big leagues until it learns how to scurry on command for transparently fake and pathetically ineffective cover that convinces no one. Look, I’m trying to be helpful, OK? When is the last time Russert stood up FDL on Press the Face? Learn from your betters. I’m really trying to help. Scurry, scrape, abase, is this blog man enough for that? Is it tough enough?
SeamusD @ 158
Understand that “now” is a relative term. No matter who initiates it or how, it’s going to take a really, really long time.
From HRC’s website:
spurious @ 114
Hey Spurious. We’re talkin’ SLO County, which I believe is kind of mixed but don’t know.
I feel your pain. I live in San Mateo County…pretty red here overall even with Lantos as our Rep. One neighbor is brave enough to sport a Kerry bumper sticker and endure smirks and pointing.
Since coming to FDL, I’m becoming more potty-mouthed (if that means becoming more outspoken about Bush BS). Geez!!
ironranger @ 174
Hermann Goebbling coined the Homeland term..Rove just fancies himself an historian..
Another word to add to my do not use list.
Ahem. You don’t have to be a woman to be a foul-mouthed feminist. I see no reason to sit on the sidelines here.
Frank Probst @ 183
You fu*ckin’ rock.
LS@181: Rove may fancy himself as an historian but I think he also fancies himself as cute & clever, infinitely more clever than anyone else.

there is an amazing and instruction youtube clip floating around showing hillary meeting with code pink.
boy does she ever bob, weave and dance around what they ‘imagined’ would be her sympathy to their cause.
demi @ 133
Amen! When he said that I thought “All Mighty GOP”, certainly not a Higher Power with Karma on Delivery!
Jon Stewart and John Oliver were so dang funny on Rove’s departure. It’s a long clip but check it out on C&L.
Hey isn’t that Florida Rep really the one who is the Real Potty Mouth?
spurious…
there are many lifelong Republicans, military families, country club types, who have not drunk the kool-aid and are disgusted by Bushco and ready to cross over and make a protest vote, maybe for the first time in their lives. (I’m thinking of the people John Dean was reaching in Conservatives without Conscience…he says his thesis was met with approval by Barry Goldwater himself.)
However, HRC may be too much like voting fo the antichrist for them, so they may sit it out.
and as you point out, the lizard brains will be in an absolute frenzy, and suddenly voting for the least-worst on their side will become an obligation. (though one reason they have dragged the (R) party so far into wingnut territory is their refusal to fall for the least-worst trick, forcing the candidates to come to them. we should try it on the left sometime.)
brendan @ 109
In my opinion, you’d figure out exactly what happened and why, and the ways in which our security services failed. And then make needed (but constitutional) changes. And make everything public that absolutely didn’t have to be classified.
You have the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. Every time you walk into the room, I feel lighter, my mood brightens – it’s like someone has lifted a weight from my shoulders. But best of all, your intellect is challenging and formidable.
Now, if you don’t mind, and if I’m not being too forward, could you please just talk dirty to me? Just a little?
Please?
¡Viva la pinga!
Sparkles the Iguana @ 179
IIRC, home is not the destination of her troop withdrawal. I believe it is someplace a lot less homelike than, well, home. Like Kuwait, or Dubai??
ironranger @ 185
I think he just fancies himself…in many, many ways.
spurious @ 146
This is where Guiliani, with his relatively liberal social baggage that hampers him with the rethugs could help him with the dems given a choice between him and HRC.
I can almost see CA gunning for Guiliani. We do have a substantial red-lite (hm, maybe better said lite-red) population in the center of the state, that Guiliani would appeal to, provided the NYFD doesn’t get the word out [and they should, stat]. I mean local dem politics have been discussing how to strengthen dem position in the valleys, but the ‘08 election is closer than that.
Dammit. I think otherwise so exciting to see winds of change percolating out through even the prez candidates, but we can’t afford another republican presidency…
The only thing I can do is encourage everyone EVERYONE to vote dem across the board…
do-si-do @ 180
Hey do-si-do, I’m in Santa Clara county but worked most recently in SF, which was balm to the soul. Pockets of red around here too–mostly in areas with a high correlation of money and advanced age. The valley is another country! I think a true technicolor map of CA would have blue up and down the coast, and mostly red everywhere else. Scary.
SeamusD @ 160
And I might add that bringing the troops home is a new position for Hillary. Just last year she was against a timeline for withdrawal.
Edwards has apologized for his war vote. And he does not take any money from PAC’s or lobbyist.
I fear the public’s reaction to HRC. I used to like her quite a bit, but her voting record (the war and her refusal to say that it was a bad idea), as well as her refusal to get on board with the Cheney impeachment, has made me second-guess. HRC is status quo, at best.
I would love to have a minority President and/or VP, but those attributes are simply not overriding.
I think that Edwards and Kucinich have both shown great leadership in the race for the nomination.
Notice that when Edwards takes a stand, the Faux News debates, for example, Hillary and Obama eventually come around to his way of thinking. Who is the leader?
Kucinich’s message and refusal to suck up to the party line are commendable, and also show great leadership.
Marcus Aurelius @ 190
You forgot to notice her great shoes and say something nice about her hair. And next time bring flowers.
Let’s be clear on why there was a DLC in the first place. It’s sole reason for existence was to provide a platform that would be attractive to southern white men. Now we all know that all the Dixiecrats are now firmly ensconced in the GOP-they ain’t comin’ back for awhile. Now that progressives are willing to cast off the south (much to Mudcat Saunders’ dismay) the DLC becomes REALLY IRRELEVANT. There will be no reforming of Roosevelt’s New Deal coalition. That ship sank in 1994 and it’s way past time to articulate clearly who our friends and enemies are.
We are still about labor, choice, equal rights for all, economic justice, fair (not free) trade laws, universal health care, better education, stark reductions in green house gas emissions, smart and sustainable energy policy, fair elections, fair and equitable immigration policy, public financing of national elections, and most of all RESPECT FOR THE CONSTITUTION.
We are NOT about corporate welfare, an oil-only energy policy, rape of the environment, exports of jobs, or a one-party state.
Democrats are for democracy-republicans are not.
The natural constituencies for these policies are out there ready to join us and they don’t give a damn about the DLC. And no, Harold, we are not a conservative country-only the south is and I am goddam sick and tired of subjugating my party’s interests to appease southern white men.
We will take our country back with or without your help, Harold. And no, we really don’t need you but you need us. Sure we can work together but the caboose don’t get to lead the train anymore.
Kevster @ 199
I will wonder for a long time what would have happened if Kos, in response to Harold’s nasty and untrue anti-Semitic dig, had asked him why he was content with being the Dixiecrats’ boy when they obviously weren’t going to ever allow him to be an African-American Senator from TN.
But even our Orange Overlord and Great Orange Satan is above fighting like that. [sigh]
This entire catfight between Kos and the DLC does seem to have quite a bit to do with control, doesn’t it? Who gets to control the message and claim to be the “voice of Democrats”? Do the DLC get to hang onto central control by a choice few (corporate media, corporate donors) or is the primary Dem message more effectively spread through the internets (genuine grass roots, crazy foul-mouthed people typing away in their underwears).
Sacanagem @ 201
You forgot the Cheetos.
spurious @ 195
How do young Silicon Valley technocrats shake out politically? Any trend, or are they all over the place? I would guess Red but I’m openminded and don’t want to assume. Most of the ones I know are potty-hearted. But one notable new young and retired millionaire is especially charitable and inclusive in his thinking, so I can’t pigeonhole anyone.
Any thoughts?
ccmask @ 202
Where do you put the Cheetos?
In Collins’ nomenclature, Dick Cheney is a “foul-mouthed man-veep.”
Light at the end of the tunnel
Motherfuckers want to talk about obscenity. . .
Sacanagem @ 201
It oughtta be both. But I’m not a fan of long-lasting wars that bankrupt our country, and soak up funds that could be used rebuilding America instead of lining the pockets of assholes. The DLC is all about that.
What happened?!?!? I though it was all middle aged white guy bloggers on Firedoglake??!?!?
Who’s for another Meet the Press debate? Last Sunday it was Harold Ford vs. Kos This week it’s the ladies: Susan Collins vs Jane Hamsher. Man, I pay HUGE money to see that one.
Frank33 @ 44
Man, if any of that was true I’d be against it too. Somehow I doubt they’ve got the story exactly right. It looks like we need a little more objective reporting on what’s happened/happening.
I believe that Harry Reid is a DLCer, and that he purposely engineered the recent FISA bill on behalf of HC, to help her position herself better with Republicans if she wins the nomination. But as usual he never anticipated the massive outcry that would follow, or if he did, he did not care, the same way he did not care when he promised the chairmanship to Leiberman even before any vote was cast in the 2006 midterm elections. After the elections, he went on to say that no promised was made by the Democrat leadership to bring the troops home and that mistakes were made. Frankly, I am tired of Harry Reid’s miscalculations.
Sparkles the Iguana @ 83
Okay, let’s test that. Name 4 things she stands for or directions she wants to take the country.
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 158
Wanna set up your own?
The Republicans women are just jealous because they’re not allowed to say anything — burkas get in the way.
If the best Sen. Collins has is that her followers should ‘rally round their gal’ cause she’s under attack, then that just means she has nothing to offer her electorate, so she’s doing a little dance to distract them.
One of the most foul-mouthed things I’ve ever heard was/is when a senator says “Aye” to support anything George W. Bush wanted/wants.
Jane,
FDL is not a foul-mouthed fem blog.
FDL is a foul-mouthed, amazing, insightful, entertaining, knowledgeable, fact-based, diverse, incredibly useful for purposes of having a clue as to what is going on in this society blog.
God bless FDL.
Whoa whoa whoa a second here….
The Democratic party has many messaging arms. The distinction is that Kos (and FDL and c.) are the only ones saying what you want to hear. Don’t get too big for your britches here.
The real reason the right wants to demonize the Great Orange Satan is so that they can show videotape of Hillary Clinton endorsing the ‘hate’ of YearlyKos. And, of course, so that Rick Perlstein’s grandma hates him. They don’t have to spend much (capital or political), and the returns, while not huge, are certainly worthwhile.
Those of us in the Reality-Based Community were saying the same nasty things about the religious right in the mid-80s as Bill O’Reilly is saying today about Kos. Get it? That’s politics. It’s a victory for the netroots to be hated by the right wing.
Jeff W @ 209
CAT FIGHT!
Sacanagem @ 201
It’s always about that. THat’s what it was about in 1972, when people like Muskie, Humphrey, and Jackson who had supported the Vietnam War (and the party machinery that supported them) were the front-runners in the elections and McGovern won instead. They didn’t want to lose control of the party to McGovern’s people, and they did their best — even to the point of withholding support from McGovern — to keep that from happening.
As for Kucinich not answering the question about a dirty bomb going off, he said that “you have to know where it’s coming from…we must have a national security doctrine that involves using good old-fashioned police work to track down people who appear to be ready to strike at this country…”
Harold Ford, Jr the man with no personality is a huge supporter of the Iraq war.. He is not a very smart man either, he never passed his Bar Exam in 1996 and has never tried again. He is fake, and no he is not a true democrat.
OldCoastie @ 81
Nothing has changed. ;-)
Several years ago..Susan Collins was hanging out with Tom Delay and Joe Lieberman. Came home to Maine to speak to the Bangor theological seminary…about ETHICS. That’s a foul mouthed female. It just didn’t ring true somehow. A tall long haired gentleman in the back asked Susan to talk about Iraq. She refused …he asked a couple more times. Then she went to the Bangor News to complain about the lovely young man interrupting her ethics speech. Bangor News wrote it up with just the hint of she is trying to put the young man in a bad light and We won’t be a party to it. Bangor News stood tall that day and Susan looked less than honest or ethical.
Harold Ford: Irrelevant L-O-S-E-R.
darrelplant @ 216
Oooo – is this for reals!?! ‘cuz if it IS, I need more TiVos!
If one’s behaviour is constantly focused on proving one’s self a man, or a woman, it shows only that that person has yet to learn who s/he is. Rather than looking inside, these seekers choose to look outside and to emulate those who best fit their fantasy image. Their lives are filled with envy, anger and angst. I chose to be neither something nor someone I am not.
‘to DLC’, a verb: ‘to debase oneself to corporate interests at the expense of the environment, fiscal responsibility, social justice, and integrity.’
DLC Dems mistake capitulation for compromise; if it weren’t for Howard Dean calling bullshit on DLC-type collusion with the Rethugs, I wouldn’t pay attention to the Dems at all.
As for obscene blogs… let’s hope the delicate Sen. Collins doesn’t read Shakespeare or Aristophanes — she might be offended by the witty obscenities wielded by those dead white guys!
Thank God I don’t have to spend my time in Susan Collins’ 2007 obscenity-free version of Cloud Cuckooland!
