It appears TNH has figured out how to get rid of the Bush/Cheney regime: just ignore them.
After spending two years digging through every document she could find (e.g., like this) to detail all the ways in which Karl Rove helped reveal Valerie Plame’s identity, lie about it to the Grand Jury, compromise criminal prosecutions at the Department of Justice, purge the DoJ of career attorneys, undermine the voting rights of countless Americans, smear opponents of both parties, organize a campaign to politicize the entire government by violating the Hatch Act and generally giving the White House some of the most unethical political strategies ever conceived to deliberately divide the American people, Marcy just stopped giving him so much attention. Result: Karl Rove is leaving.
All Karl ever wanted was to be left alone to work in secret to destroy America’s political landscape, and not be held accountable. His job was to create a permanent Republican majority, and he failed beyond his wildest nightmares. There will be celebrations all over America, including within the Republican Party, which is in the process of self immolation because it followed his advice. But Bob Novak must be heartbroken.
We should ask Marcy to ignore Cheney and Bush for 30 days and test this new approach. It has promise.
You can use this thread as a caption contest for the photo. How about: “Rove demonstrates using RNC cell phone to evade Presidential Records Act.”
Update: Oh dear. Marcy couldn’t leave well enough alone. She’s such an optimist.

good morning!
Caw, caw!
G’morning, Scarecrow!
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead, the Wicked Witch is Dead…
Here’s my caption: “Hello,
GodSatan. It’s me,MargaretKarl.”What a great way to start the week!
Any word on what he’s planning to do next?

How’s it going?
Poor Marcy, she’s going to be busy this morning paying attention to this fat, pasty slug of a man.
Ugh. Why is it really evil villains aren’t eye candy? ;-)

Presser with Bush and Rove this morning at 11:35.
Rove saying he isn’t stepping down to avoid Congressional scrutiny.

You’d think the WH would have sense enough to stay silent and just let this creep slink away. But they can’t resist trying to control the news, every day, even if every time Bush says “loyal service” the American people will wince.
Keep the captions coming. There will be a prize: a subscription to The Next Hurrah.
“Pop pop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is” or is it? What is that slimy toad up too now. If I were an investigative reporter I would stick like glue to find out what he is up to, you know it is some crooked scheme to throw the elections or something equally as bad.
Let us make certain to show appropriate sympathy for Karl’s family.
Jeff, I just got rid of three AGs who hadn’t done the work we expected. Get the champagne on ice, I’ll meet you in the WH in about an hour. Also, um, don’t forget the oil this time.
Say hi to Karl folks I’m sure he has GOP interns monitoring media reaction to his leaving. We have a vibrant late night/early morning community so Karl has to be checking us out too! Bahaahaa!

“Yeah that will be enough – it’s a working luncheon”
radiofreewill @ 10
In which case, we can assume that’s precisely why he’s stepping down.
Of course, being a former WH insider didn’t prevent Harriet from skipping her subpoena, and Rove will presumably take advantage of being in Texas when the call comes. He simply doesn’t want to be back in DC when Congress reconvenes.

Agreed

Maybe it will be different now that those in congress know what inherent contempt means.

Not bad. Esten was hospitalized last week for fevers. It got a little hairy. He had no immune system to speak of. After five days they found a kidney stone and put in a stint. They didn’t want to remove it in case it was infectious. As is was, there was a risk of him going septic as a result of the procedure.
He’s out now, but his numbers are still low. They’re planning on removing the thing in a week if he rebounds.
Thanks for asking.

Scarecrow @ 29
Tommy, You’re missed when you don’t post for awhile. Please take care.
There’s something I don’t understand. The WH admitted that pretty much everyone there violated the Hatch Act.
Is that the end of it? Remember what they did to Gore when he did the same thing? Bush brought it up in the debate.
Why can’t someone be punished for this?
Scarecrow @ 29
I second that.
“Here’s what I want to do to you first: I want to take my tongue and slowly lick your ear, running down to the base of your neck, and then nibble your-
what? who? oh, LAURA! Yeah, it’s me. I guess the chief isn’t in yet? Yeah, I know. I KNOW, Laura. Always ask if it’s him first. Yeah. I know. I know. Okay. I’ll call back after he’s done with breakfast. Okay. Bye, now.”
Maybe someone at the Supreme Court told Bush that Executive Priviledge could not be streched to include the advice the White House political director gives in confidence to Bush.
Good morning.
So, the new question is:
Will Congress get rolled by this tactic, or will they hold Harriet in contempt and thereby make it clear that Rove has not wiggled free simply by resigning?

“Well, what about Argentina?”
My bet is KKKarl is jumping ship now to avoid being invlolved in President ChenyBushbag’s decision to attack Iran. When it becomes evident that Congress will force Bush to withdraw from Iraq the missels will fly. I think KKKarl lost his argument with the Cheny gang and this is the only way he can escape the carnage.
“Ken, you won’t believe this – I came in this morning and I couldn’t get in to any of my 16 e-mail accounts, my Blackberry wouldn’t connect, and Gannon said he doesn’t know me anymore. What the hell’s going on?”

Heh. “Who” already put up a responsive post.
GeorgeSimian @ 32
The way I interpret this is that the WH has now desensitized the public to criminal behavior and neutered the Congress. There is no accountability anywhere, so it’s safe for WH people to stay, leave, whatever without a care.
An alternative view is that the hounds are about to catch the fox, so best to get out now. I’m skeptical.
things come undone @ 35
That would be the case in the world we grew up in. Are you suggesting there is some rape of the Constitution that Scalito won’t cave into?
So, who amoung the nine would be THAT swing vote?
tommy yum @ 23
Sorry to hear Esten has been having more problems involving hospitalization. Are kidney stones *normal* in one so young? (((Hugs to you and all the family.)))
When things calm down again, would still love to follow up on possibilities of a meet-up for NC firepups. Have started a list of self-identifiers.

damn, I sure hope so (that Congress continues to pursue).

I had one written which ended, Mom?
Damn (again), I just can’t stomach that piece in the WSJ. Has anyone seen a good piece on Karl leaving yet?
While his ass in the slammer and his head on a pike might be preferred, my immediate concern is that this fat slug’s security clearance is yanked as of the end of business on 31-AUG-07.
How do we ensure this through our elected officials?
And what’s to keep this fat slug from having a desk inside the WH like Rummy did…hell, how do we even know Rummy actually left? Did he get a contractor’s badge and a new security clearance? Would they do the same with Rove?
looseheadprop @ 43
Against all odds, I would still wager that it is Kennedy who has not yet totally swallowed all the kool-aid.
Thanks for the good vibes. I feel them deeply.
The kidney stones are caused by the chemo, natch.
Ding-dong Turdblossoms gone.
First, how will Bush function without his brain? His co-dependant shtick with Rover is one that will be dissected for a long time.
Seems interesting that Chimpy goes to Maine for the weekend and lo-and-behold another political bombshell happens on Monday. Just like the Libby commutation.
Poppy wants to see a legacy of something more than slash and burn politics.
Also, I take it Rove won’t be working for Romney. This story steps all over Oil Slick Mitts glorious straw poll victory.
-GSD
I say Waxman must be recalled to DC immediately to hold hearings on who owns Karl’s E-Mail on the RNC Servers, before he jumps the border.
Psuedo at 19 -
Yea, that is a good explanation.
I have floated a couple more this morning on dkos and Atrios.
1) Rove is leaving to raise funds for Bush library and to set it up. They need to raise about $500M you know. This fundraising goal and that Rove is going to head it were speculated in the press a while ago.
2) Larry Flynt is going to publish his list of repubs in illicit sex in Sept (you don’t launch a new product in August, you know). Maybe Rove got caught in Flynt’s net?
Another commenter at Atrios raised another point. Seligman trial in Alabama (Dem former governor in AL, who was sent to prison on trumped up corruption charges) may be back in the news and the speculation is Rove was caught red-handed through emails and other docs. The commneter speculates that Sen. Leahy may already have all that documentation. If so, Rove’s goose is cooked for ever.
“…okay, okay, I’m resigning. Now will you please burn those pics of me at Fire Island?”

Yikes!! I just got here…what news!
Will the presser be in Crawford?
my thoughts on why: Rove figures if he gets out now, Congress will consider him a moot point (why bother going after him if he’s already gone – much historical precedent for this attitude). Also, Rove may be positioning for his next job – wonder if Freddyboy has taken him on as a consultant.

Karl’s doctor: “No, Karl, we found out it wasn’t the worlds biggest hemorrhoid, it’s just your head.”
So Mr. Sue cracks me up. Normally mild-mannered, unopinionated and not laser-focused on politics (opposites attract?), this a.m. he told me he’d heard the news on the radio and his first thought was “uh oh — what’s he going to go damage now? — maybe it’s better to keep him where we can see him.”
Then I heard Karen Tumulty on MSNBC this a.m. saying he’s bought a house in Florida and has been spending time there.
Thinking we shouldn’t take our eye off this weasel.

When you pulsed the ‘pups yesterday on what today’s headlines would be, I bet you didn’t count on this one huh?

This has occurred to me as well, and frankly
I am scared.
Of course I am of a paranoid nature and , at the time, was nervous about Carter and the Tri-Lateral Commission.

Yes. People can call this the Roberts S.Ct., or the Scalia S.Ct. – but in reality this is the Kennedy Court.
As Kennedy goes, so goes the Supreme Court.

Interesting news.
1. Leaving for family reasons: of course, false. Son of Karl attends a university in the Great Southwest. Mr. and Mrs. Rove visited the son on a regular basis during the last school year. At all times, Mr. and Mrs. Rove acted and behaved like “typical college student parents”. No political bloviating or pontificating.
My information on this is dead solid.
2. With Karl, everything is a political calculation. He probably figures that leaving might take some heat of Commander Guy. Karl will be well compensated as the months roll by.
3. Pay attention to reports of his destination: Florida. This may very well be an advance move to help Jeb in 2012. I believe the inside thinking of the Bush family is that 2008 is a loss; so now is the time to start “growing” the candidacy of Jeb in 2012. Always remember, the Bush’s think the WH is their inherent “property”.

radiofreewill @ 10
Where did you hear about the presser?
What Conyers and Leahy need to understand is that they need to come out of the blocks running. While Karl’s Magic Blackberry will be hard at work from Texas — and now you just have to wonder whether young Scottie Jennings will get bumped up to Double Secret Privilege status — you’d hope that there’s room to push on early and quickly.
Ideally, one would like to see the story bumped on a bit by those outside Congress so that it’s a rolling start. Any chance that Christy could persuade David Iglesias to pop by for a thread — or a videochat — to talk about the leadership required from both parties to restore dignity to the DOJ? I think that’s a nice little seam to mine.
KKKarl Rove: “I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family.” THE BUSH CRIME FAMILY!
dakine01 @ 62
How did we miss it? Marcy’s silence spoke volumes.
looseheadprop @ 37
Hopefully, they hold both of them in contempt and stay focused. Truth is, he can do more damage out of the WH- all the same games and avoid violation of the Hatch Act. Rove is in no way done, just creating the visual of distance. …And, the hope that someone’s number’s go up with him gone. We can all expect a Pres. pardon when and where Congress gets it’s act together.
Should he be found guilty, which I think on any number of the issues Marcy named this AM, he will; it will be party suicide for a Presidential pardon.
Congress should reconvene early. Oh wait, there’s that DC “gut” threat that suggested Congress stay away until September. Hmmm…

Yes.

Man, I don’t have a good feeling about this. Bush’s bug bite (lyme disease) from last year reported last week. I think it’s really Alzheimer’s. The last wall between Cheney and Bush being removed. Cheney wants Iran really bad. I have a verrrrrry bad feeling about this.

While I certainly hope everyone’s “ding dong the witch is dead” optimism is actually the case, but I guess I’m a little too cynical.
I suspect he’s moving to protect himself, but I really don’t buy that he’s going to move on to other things. He has too much invested in his 100 year Republican Reich.
My guess he’s just trying to drop below the radar leading into the 2008 elections.
Maybe this was the “deal” on that FISA vote, but even if that were the case, don’t count on the neo-cons to keep their word — just give the appearance of keeping their end of the bargain.
Good morning from L.A. Excellent post, Scarecrow & thanks for the link to TNH.
Been gone camping for the wknd w/out my computer. After picking up on the news re: Rove this a.m., I’m now listening to a little classical music to suit the mood:
Mood Music for Impending Rove Departure
looseheadprop @ 43
Marcy should be able to shed some light on this. Why weren’t the two FISA court rulings that went against the White House appealed to the FISA appeals court? Was the White House receiving some indication that the Supreme Court would side with the FISA court and with the FISA appeals court?
Marie Roget @ 85
That’s great. Is that Mitt’s Tabernacle Choir? Please take your little tune to the next thread for all to enjoy.

I agree that Rove can do as much damage outside the WH as inside. All he needs is his RNC cell phone.

I don’t see how resigning would make any difference. In or out of the the job at the WH won’t stop the subpoena. Look at Meirs, got a subpoena, and told the JC to GFY.

So leemie understand this. Martial law will be declared on September 1, or on September 11 consider the significance.
‘course, there is one way around martial law. Secession. Might not be a bad idea at that.
