From the No Honor Among Thieves Department (hat tip to Norwegianity), in case your schadenfreude jones hasn’t been sated by Karl Rove’s bailing from the Bush ship of state:
Linda Chavez rose to prominence in the 1980s as a tart-tongued Reagan administration official and candidate for the Senate, eventually becoming a well-known Latina voice on social issues and President Bush’s choice to lead the Labor Department. With her conservative celebrity came book deals, a syndicated column, regular appearances on the Fox News Channel — and a striking but little-known success at political fundraising.
In the years since she was forced to pull her nomination as Bush’s labor secretary after admitting payments to an illegal immigrant, Chavez and her immediate family members have used phone banks and direct-mail solicitations to raise tens of millions of dollars, founding several political action committees with bankable names: the Republican Issues Committee, the Latino Alliance, Stop Union Political Abuse and the Pro-Life Campaign Committee. Their solicitations promise direct action in the “fight to save unborn lives,” a vigorous struggle against “big labor bosses” and a crippling of “liberal politics in the country.”
That’s not where the bulk of the money wound up being spent, however. Of the $24.5 million raised by the PACs from January 2003 to December 2006, $242,000 — or 1 percent — was passed on to politicians, according to a Washington Post analysis of federal election reports. The PACs spent even less — $151,236 — on independent political activity, such as mailing pamphlets.
Instead, most of the donations were channeled back into new fundraising efforts, and some were used to provide a modest but steady source of income for Chavez and four family members, who served as treasurers and consultants to the committees. Much of the remaining funds went to pay for expenses such as furniture, auto repairs and insurance, and rent for the Sterling office the groups share. Even Chavez’s health insurance was paid for a time from political donations.
“I guess you could call it the family business,” Chavez said in an interview.
Yeah, I guess you could. She really could give pointers on shakedowns and betrayal, couldn’t she? Can you say “projection”, everyone? I knew you could.
I’m kinda bummed that her little scam’s been exposed. Chavez’s efforts have kept at least a cool $24 million out of the hands of Republican campaigns over the past four years, and I hope that she continues to divert GOP donations from their intended targets for years to come.

PW, great post!
I guess you could indeed! All those fund raising businesses are quite lucrative…
Yeee-haw!! Wingnuts esplodin’!!
Republican family business, run according to Republican family values.
Layers and layers of lies and corruption. It just never frigging ends…
I was mad as hell, but I agree that at least those donations don’t help more Republicants get elected. Good way to spin it.
“I guess you could call it the family business,” Chavez said in an interview.”
Funny quote considering KKKarl’s , “I’ve got to do this for my family”, quote.
When did this bombshell drop?
Thats going to leave a mark.
Any of that legal?
I met some professionals in that business years ago, I felt dirty afterward. They told me how easy the money was, it seemed like they were stealing then & made me sure to always ask whenever solicitors call for the Police Benevolent Association (or whoever)-”Are you a Policeman?” and to hangup when the answer (as it is invariably) is negative.
Hi, PW.
Yes, I can loathe Ms. Chavez.
You’ve got me worked up.
I’ll give to the next Blue America candidate here on FDL.
I’m at your will. Tell me what to do. Tell me how I can become a good soldier in the service of progressive america.
I have not liked Ms. Chavez for many years. And Lahoma’s attitude toward the likes of Chavez is not printable.
Bustednuckles @ 9
With whom? Those who haven’t yet realized what a scam the GOP is are carrying signs that say “Fleece me! I’m a gooper.”
The Chavez’s evidently didn’t get the $24 million, either. Supposedly, 95% of the money went to the tele-fund operators. Too funny.
There really are two Americas. One that calls itself “The Homeland” that lies, steals, and cheats…and then there is everyone else.
Let me count the ways…
When I see his ass hauled out in leg irons and handcuffs in orange and yellow striped leotards behind Cheney and Dubya’s handcuffed, leg-ironed asses, shuffling off to the plane that will spirit them away to The Hague for trial, THAT will be satiation

KO opens with “A man called Turdblossom.”
and John Dean will be on tonight.
Truth…A woman on the street was asked about the name “Turdblossom”. Why would he call him that if he has done so much. The reporter explains it is a Texas description of a flower that grows out of cow dung…The woman looked at the reporter and said…”like fertilizer”. She is so right.
Obviously greed, betrayal and treachery are not gender or ethnic specific. Chavez and our current AG, as well as others, prove the point.
Karl Rove will go down in history as the right hand man of the worst president in US history. Congrats Karl!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 21
Exactly. It is a question of character. It exists or doesn’t exist, everywhere in the world, at all times.
ccmask @ 22
And Karl will make tons of money on the lecture circuit. Where’s the justice?
nonplussed @ 3
There’s nothing like wingnut welfare, as reformed wingnut David Brock can tell you. And there’s definitely nothing like actively ripping off one’s fellow wingnuts.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 24
Maybe. It ain’t over yet.
TRex @ 4
Yeah. This, Rove, the news about Word Salad Pam (which I missed last week!) — it’s just a festival of schadenfreudiliciousness!
I’m watching the press conference with Rove & Bush. Why is Bush breathing so deep and heavy and why is Karl all choked up? Doesn’t look like it was Bush or Rove’s idea to resign to me.
Eureka Springs @ 19
Oh, lovely!
Jim C @ 7
It’s almost as if she was a Democratic mole, set to be a vacuum cleaner sucking up gullible right-wing dollars. (Hell, if you go look up racist anti-Hispanic sites like VDARE, they all but accuse her of this!)
Yes, this is truly brilliant. We should all start right wing PAC’s and reinvest all the funds into raising more right wing funds. I would suspect it’s even legal!
Heh, ‘Turd Blossom Wilts’, gotta love KO!!! ;-)
What does Linda Chavez mean when she says “I guess you could call it the family business?” Are they like grifters – does she mean they do this for a living? What’s with that?
ccmask @ 28
And, Rove doesn’t strike me as the type to deeply and outwardly mourn leaving public service. He seems much more the type to cry for self pity.

Here in Atlanta we are protected from MSNBC, please update..
We are looking at John Dean on Olbermann. It is our view that Mr. Dean is an honorable and decent man who has paid his dues. The next president should give Dean a full pardon.
Dean thinks this is an opportunity for Congress to get more aggressive with Rove.
ccmask @ 28
I agree. If Karl was planning to leave and go work on some new candidate or fight the Dems…he would have been smug, and the two of them would be laughing. Not so. He was literally emotional. That was not an act. They are not good actors. Howard Fineman is trying a scare tactic on KO that Karl is coming down to Texas to tackle the Dems in the 08 election. Like he has this huge plan…blah, blah, blah. This man is currently in violation of a subpoena from congress. He has troubles. He is connected to Abramoff…I call BS. I don’t buy his theory at all. This was sudden. Bush changed his travel plans. Something else is up.
JPL – Turdblossom is a well known nickname for KKKarl.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 37
Dean suggests that Barney the dog may be covered my exec privilege, as it is practiced by Bush.
Loo Hoo. @ 38
please keep it coming
Fineman thinks Rove is off to attack Hillary. Dean agrees.
Eureka Springs @ 40
Given to him by Bush.
Dean has a new book BROKEN GOVERNMENT coming out next month. Book Salon?
Rove vs. Hillary? I’ll take Hillary any day.
LS @ 39
Marcy has similar premonitions, check out The Next Hurrah, she has three separate posts up today about Turd Blossom!!!
On the previous thread, Frank33 @113 has done some valuable information gathering that requires heads up. Go check it. Thank you Frank33. I’m still following up on it. We need a full dedication on these companies otherwise we are just spinning wheels.
Interesting that Rove is supposedly moving to the San Antonio area.
Maybe Karl is going home to get his affairs in order.
If Rove is the attack dog on Hillary, then we must attack the GOP nominee more intensly. I do hope Rudy the G. is their guy.
LS @ 49
What kind of mischief can the central texas firepups plan for his new home? Hmmmm. A project for our september get-together. Could be more fun than the picnic.
LS, are you in the San Antonio area? Could you deliver a message to Rove for us?
ccmask @ 50
Prior to his long-delayed frog-march! Hey, Inherent Contempt is looking very doable now!!! ;-)
TexBetsy @ 52
Well, be sure to meet somewhere with wifi so you can keep us posted!

indeed.
James Moore who wrote Bushs’ Brain:
Bush goes from lame duck to lame brain. He sees Bush with a calendar counting down the days. The republican party doesn’t want anything to do with Rove. He thinks that Rove can cash in now on speaking fees and writing his book. He will try to write a book that will make this admin look better.
Loo Hoo. @ 43
Fineman also thinks the Congressional investigations are at the point where they are winding down.
To which I say, not so fast, Howard.
ccmask @ 59
Have laptop, will blog!!! ;-)
Predictions about the real reasons why Rove resigned are being collected here.
The madam strikes again!
Rove departs and Gonzales remains. Strange days.
Not so fast, Howard, is right. The investigations better not be winding down.

$24M???
That’s a lot of coin… where did that come from?
Rove resigns in order to shore up the base. Work hard, Karl.
Does so to shore up support for the upcoming attack on Iran.
Heil, Bush. Heil, Cheney.
Roves next project http://www.lileks.com/institut…..ne/31.html
you know, with all this going wrong, what could possibly go right?
I remember back when the president gained popularity, it was because of 9/11
before that he was allready a lame duck, he could get nothing done and he was just biding his clearing brush time at his ranch
a do nothing
then 9/11 happened and it looked like everything fell in his lap from there to remain in office
and now the walls come tumbling down with everything he touches getting koodies.
the problem is he and cheney are still in office, even though any ONE of these scandals should have provoked impeachment

From David Corn wrt Mitt Romney.
SMALL CHANGE. I just noticed that after Mitt Romney won the not-so-important Republican straw poll in Ames, Iowa, this past weekend, he said, “Today, the people of this great state sent a message to America, and that is that change begins in Iowa.”
A question for the former Massachusetts governor: what “change” are you talking about? We’ve had a Republican president for two terms, and he has gotten the country stuck in an unpopular war in Iraq. You are a Republican and you support the war, so what “change” do you represent?
and, wrt Rove:
But leaving is too good for Rove. He was Bush’s partner in the Iraq war, yet he (like other Bush aides, including, most recently, Dan Bartlett) are abandoning ship before the fight is done. Rove has argued that the Iraq war is essential for the survival of the United States (that is, for all of our families). So how can he walk away with the war not won?

Jonathan @ 73
But Rove does not shore up. He divides, in order to conquer. And has no idea when to stop. The GOP base is hopelessly splintered, and it’s Rove’s doing. Long live the Turdblossom!
Considering what we know about Repubs and property deals…e.g., Cunningham, perhaps a revist here is in order:

The Chavez story in the end is wingnug welfare at it’s best. I’m sure in a few years we will be hearing a similar story about Elaine Chow, another off color distaff Labor Secretary serving in a Republican administration. Since Elaine is far more rabidly anti labor in her rhetoric and decision making I think she will make out better than Linda so won’t have to go through the failed restaurant phase, this time Chinese we can imagine.
I think a little ‘Instant Karma’ is apropo!

Democrats ‘are ready to give the green light to go to war, but when it gets tough, when it gets difficult, they fall back on that party’s old pattern of cutting and running. They may be with you at the first shots, but they are not going to be with you for the last, tough battle.’ –Karl Rove
Thanks TexBet
Romney is crowing about how he “won” the Iowa straw vote. Mittie didn’t win it, he bought it.

Oklahoma kiddo @ 86
To a Republican, the difference is nonexistant.
Romney is just another rich kid who wants to rule. But I will not sell him short on the possibilities.
QuakerGirl @ 48
Thanks, and I should give Buzzflash a litle credit, which pointed to a Iraq Mercenary story. It also says several United States generals are protected by mercenaries.
___________________
In all, the United States may have as many as 400,000 personnel occupying Iraq, not including allied nations’ militaries. The statistics on contractors do not account for all armed contractors. Last year, a U.S. government report estimated there were 48,000 people working for more than 170 private military companies in Iraq. “It masks the true level of American involvement,” says Ambassador Wilson.
How much money is being spent just on mercenaries remains largely classified. Congressional sources estimate the United States has spent at least $6 billion in Iraq, while Britain has spent some $400 million. At the same time, companies chosen by the White House for rebuilding projects in Iraq have spent huge sums in reconstruction funds — possibly billions on more mercenaries to guard their personnel and projects.
The single largest U.S. contract for private security in Iraq was a $293 million payment to the British firm Aegis Defence Services, headed by retired British Lt. Col. Tim Spicer, who has been dogged by accusations that he is a mercenary because of his private involvement in African conflicts. The Texas-based DynCorp International has been another big winner, with more than $1 billion in contracts to provide personnel to train Iraqi police forces, while Blackwater USA has won $750 million in State Department contracts alone for “diplomatic security.”
GordonM @ 88
True.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 86
I thought he won because all his wives voted for him.
Rove’s resignation is effective 8/31. What does that mean exactly? Will he be returning to the W.H. and working there until then or is he actually already done but not officially?
The reason I ask is because it would appear that no shoe is going to drop till September.

Katrina aid going to inland luxury condos
Author: Satyam
The AP reports that “rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos.” The Gulf Opportunity Zone Act of 2005 granted “generous tax benefits available to investors. Now, investors are renting out luxury condos in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which “got only heavy rain and scattered wind damage from Katrina.” “It was supposed to be about getting people..to put housing in New Orleans, Louisiana, or Biloxi, Mississippi. It was not about condos in Tuscaloosa,” said a developer.
