very much aware of it. that’s one of the possibilities a lot of us are hoping for, because that sort of crap is pure political poison that all sides won’t tolerate (unless you get away with it, of course) Problem to now has been no paper trail, one persons word against another, etc. no smoking gun. We’ll see…
SeamusD @ 25
I had forgotten about that scandal – where the attorney swore in a deposition that Rove was involved in the indictment of the Dem Governor.
This certainly would fall under “family reason” if there is a indictment coming down the pike for Rove.
“but in all fairness, she was French… so fuck it.”
damned sick Brits… and damned funny.

Damn you, TRex.
Okay, you guys I need some help. The National Education Association wants me to help blog for them. I need a title for the blog that fits. I don’t want it to be all cutesy. I want it to be a strong title, advocating teachers, but yet shows my feeling that we want American education to be world- class and produces results showing we are such. K-12. It probably needs a catchy acronym. I am not at all concerned about NCLB being a part of it. Something better than TAF–Teachers for America First- my first stupid thought. Help!

Compared to what it was in the days of watergate it is so awful I literally can’t read it…
SeamusD,
Yeah, I think that this little deal may be the reason Kkkkarl suddenly remembered he has a family. It is either that or someone has got wind of his three way with Jeff Gannon and a goat. I have great sympathy for Rove’s family and the goat.

is this blog for educators or the general public? if the former then REA is great and you can draw on a lovely FDR era acronym, the Rural Electrification Administration. My wife as a kid had the REA show up in back country new hampshire with a pole on two mules. The REA guy dug the hole set the pole and moved on. A day later the next guy came with four mules and a big spool of wire and rigged it and dropped a tap and box to their farm and moved on. They were so happy they went and bought a radio the next day and my wife instantly began wanting to live in a big city and do non-farm girl stuff. The REA provided light and enlightenment. These are the themes and memes of American Education.
I may need to go to bed soon….since I just realized the acronym is RAE. sigh. course you could do it as Rediscovering Education in America….
Bob Schacht @ 57
Well, I guess this means you are safe right now. We have heard from you and CTuttle, so we can relax. Great news, guys!
CTuttle @ 72
what’s your elevation there?
Adding my vote for REA, Loo Hoo, I like the FDR connection. If we are going to improve our schools, we need all the light and enlightenment we can get. In a perfect world teachers would be making 200 thousand dollars a year and CEO’s would have to get second jobs to pay the mortgage.

The Shrub’s voice just grates across my senses. I can’t STAND it. I listened in the beginning because i had to and had no way of escapting TV news. Althespook,
I remember that scene from West Wing. One of my other favorites is the one where Toby and Josh end up in the bar with the guy who is looking at schools for his college age daughter and talks about putting a child through school being hard, and it should be hard, but wasn’t there some way to make it a bit easier? My daughter gets her degree in November, and it has been a heck of a ride for us both. That guy is right, though. It shouldn’t be as hard as it is.
TexBetsy @ 95

Well, one school of thought would say that would be precisely WHY he would resign so he could go back to political consulting in time to pay for college. I personally agree with Christy from this morning that he is radioactive to GOP candidates and won’t find much work as a consultant.
From a HuffPo comment:
Whoops I was logged in as Donita for some damn reason.
Suzanne @ 99
KKKarl won’t have any problems making a living. If he doesn’t hire onto someone’s campaign, Bush will give him a sinecure at the George W. Bush Think Tank and Ratfucking Academy. And, if he’s planning on writing a book, what publisher today wouldn’t give him a $3 million advance, even if the book were rubbish?
Plus, he’s got several million from the sale of his consultancy.
TexBetsy @ 86
YES!!!
Hey Donita – nice to see ya here at Late Nite. i agree he is radioactive for political consulting – unless he was completely invisible and behind the scenes.

true dat — audio and all, at the same time, there is much to be gleaned from the rhetoric (especially when it’s the dissembling variety).
It’s been interesting to watch their tact and how their single-issue arguments usually come back to bite them because they have no comprehensive big picture approach.
They can only motorize those goalposts so much and then they just sound dizzy.
It’s a blergh to listen to, but very predictable.

CTuttle @ 126
Damn, y’all better stop with that voodoo shit you know. Maybe upsettin the karma regionwide too much.
newton, i look also at the timing of rove’s resignation announcement – there was something about it all that didn’t pass my sniff test – i really think rove is expecting to be indicted or something equally bad in september – why did they choose the end of august and announce it today – why all the emotions there…
rove is toast – we just haven’t learned the why yet. is it cheney’s pushback because he lost libby? what changed that caused this tobe announced today in what appears to have an hastily arranged announcement.
yellowdog jim @ 127
Heh, about a mile here!!!

i object fairly loudly.
we don’t want to make ourselves sick about though.
least we become less effective.
FDL is a part of my regular rage management regimen.
… sweat and muscle and jungle work …
Rove is rich. All along he’s had additional clients, and I’m guessing the RNC paid him too. You don’t live in the pricey part of DC on a government salary. What did we, the taxpayers, give him a year? Wasn’t it around $165,000?
FDL is to political rage management what X**ax is to stress management.
Suzanne @ 129
Suz, did you read what Marcy opined about it? She had three separate posts today about it!!!
CT, yeah, I spent some time over at marcy’s today – like I said – something is afoot – unfortunately, we are just bystanders as this all plays out and don’t know all the details yet
finifinito @ 133
A positive outlet to vent it out and commiserate with like-minded individuals, ohmmmm…!!! ;-)
Suzanne @ 129
I do not disagree. And more important than the timing (for me, anyway), is the reason in the first place. My guess is that T/Blossom is going down and he is going down hard. While he’s on his spiral, however, he can do damage to the executive.
If Sara Taylor has proved anything (to this point), it’s that you can run out the clock some with Exec Priv claims even if you’re not in the big house anymore. I’m sure Addington and company have calculated that, of all the possible issues KKKarl can cause, there are fewer to cope with if he’s on the street.
Run.Out.The.Clock.
CTuttle @ 130
hey a mile ain’t that bad at 500 feet, right?
i lived in Galveston the last two years of high school and one of junior college.
Galveston Island is not an island.
it is a sandbar, geologically.
no ground over 20 feet above sea level.
since 1900 there’s like 15 miles of concrete sea wall 17 feet high with a useful sloping curve on its face.
where’s Bob?
Suzanne @ 135
Okay, okay, wait.
Everybody listen up. I’m going to put on my Miss Cleo hat.
I predict:
1. Sue Ralston gets immunity.
2. Rove gets served multiple indictments.
But on Abramoff stuff.
Then, once there’s blood in the water, the full weight of the US Attorney firings is going to come down on him.
That’s my prediction.
Now, really, off to bed.

Proven even more by QI, (Quite Interesting) a quiz show moderated by Stephen Fry.
Every time I watch or listen to one the british quiz shows, I wonder why we don’t get much programming like that over here… There’s “Wait, wait, don’t tell me,” but I really wish there was more entertainment geared a little higher. Every time I turn on a TV in the US, I’m reminded why I haven’t had one for 5 years.
Other fun thing to note, no bleeps. Somehow, amazingly, the british public can hear the word “fuck” without having a conniption! weird…

I personally hope that we finally get to hear the debut CD of MC Rove now that he has left his day gig.
When’s the last time anyone resigned from the WH on a Monday? These things are always on Fridays. Something’s up. We’ll know what it is eventually. But damn it, I want to know now! *stomps foot*
finifinito @ 145
No, no, On the Record!!! *g*
Susan Ralston has been giving senate testimony iirc
i still think that rove is cheney’s tit for tat for losing libby and he is somehow involved in this – is rove taking one for boosh like libby did for cheney? what has changed in the past week? rove lied today when he said he submitted his letter today – when he submitted it friday. why was rove’s resignation delayed from a friday nite news dump to a 430am monday morning news dump? what were they trying to get ahead of today?
CTuttle @ 147
Heh. On white vinyl.
TexBetsy @ 59
I finally sent it off to you. Its actually a group of 6 photos on a theme (”Cats in a CD Store”). And they’re animated!
Let me know what you think…
Bob in HI
Suzanne @ 129
Ahh too many reasons and too little time? There were rumors that shrub sr. has been in close touch with the WH as of late, and sr. was not above firing Rove from his campaign. James Baker is on-board with sr… I wonder what he must think about Rove?
When Baker thinks you are a sleasy politician, you are getting it from an expert. Rove should have been dumped back in the GD days before the election, but he promised a win… But with the switch of the mood in the country, it seems likely his power and control is coming back to haunt him.
Not that that is nearly enough… Read Haldeman about the Nixon White House (Means of Power?)… No matter how you spin this, having Rove resign after ignoring a Senate subpoena smells a lot like the final Nixon months. Anybody who thinks Bush is actually going to get a boost from this is really delusional.
Personally, I am just glad rover is gone. What a mess to clean up.
TRex @ 139
sweet dreams.
may the ‘full weight’ part come true.
CTuttle @ 61
Nope.
Bob in HI
a 430 monday morning news dump means they want us to be talking about this all week – what do they not want us to see? is there a recess appointment coming in violation of that silly agreement reid made with bush for no recess appointments during the recess? what do they not want us to see this week?
Loo Hoo. @ 75
Tuesday and Wednesday will be the big days.
Bob in HI
TheOtherWA @ 146
Couple of possibilities. The Bushies might have thought (and rightly so) that if they’d done a little late Friday news dump, it really would have seemed like they were trying to spirit Rove out of town in trenchcoat and dark glasses.
The second is that there might be egos involved. Bush wanted to have a press conference in order play up Rove, and to give Rove a chance to humanize himself. They both got the opportunity to play up their friendship and their, choke, sniffle, sob, service to the country (instead of service to the Party).
On several levels, it was just more horseshit, but hardly of a different kind seen almost every day in DC.
hey me3 good to see ya again, old bud. I thought it was really strange that it was put out there that COS Bolton put out a memo to everyone saying if they were going to leave they had to do so now because if they were there on Sept 1st, they had to stay until jan 09. that was really strange and is what set my prickly neck hairs a’pricklin.
Are you guys in Hawaii okay? Talk to us!
montag @ 156
Yes, absolutely it’s horse shit. So let’s pretend this had been a Friday dump. Rove is way too big to ignore, so he would have been the talk of ALL the Sunday shows. Maybe they hope everyone will have forgotten by next Sunday. There may be something else big this week.
loohoo, everyone is accounted for that i know of. the hurricane isn’t expected there for a couple of days.

and then
to get over here as soon as i could.
Suzanne @ 157
As if the Bolten memo were simply a ruse to make it look like it was the deciding factor in Rove’s departure? Even though everyone knows that if Rove chose to ignore that dictum, Bush would have backed him?
g’nite tow
In fact, I’m more worried about him out of the WH than in it…
montag @ 167
yep, rove has withstood every other call for his resignation or firing but COS speaks and rove jumps? doesn’t ring true.
Loo Hoo. @ 158

and to add to my worries, what did the reid agreement NOT spell out – what could boosh do during a recess that is not a recess appointment but just as harmful and yet not violate the agreement? the boosh administration is infamous for splitting those hairs.

getting back to ct’s comment about marcy – is rove the distraction about what the new fisa really is? is that what we are not supposed to see?
Me3 @ 151
If I were a Republican tactician, I’d put my best poeple onto the task of passing California’s Presidential Election Reform Act. Per Jonathan Alter of Newsweek:
And who better than Karl Rove to carry the ball on that iniative?
g’fini
finifinito @ 177
Nite, fini and ydj!!!
Suzanne @ 129
For most of the answer, I’d trust Marcy over at TNH.
But here’s another factor. A lot of people treat Jason Leopold as a pariah for having not produced an indictment of Karl Rove– but here’s what I think happened:
We now know that Rove had unrestricted access to the DOJ. As a special prosecutor, Fitzpatrick had to report to the DOJ, including any indictments. So essentially, every time Fitz was ready to indict Rove, Rove would find out from his spies in the DOJ in time to make another trip to the Grand Jury and “correct” his testimony. I figure this happened 4 times (Rove made 5 appearances before the GJ). The last time, Leopold and his source thought Fitz had him dead to rights. But what they didn’t know then is that Rove had access to the indictment details, because the DOJ had to approve the indictment. Also, it is possible that the DOJ let Fitz know that no indictment of Rove would be approved.
However, now that the Democrats are in control of Congress, a number of investigations appear to be converging on Rove– as Marcy makes clear, and Rove can no longer fend them off.

Be on the phone a lot, I suspect….
I expect another document dump this week.

Oof, that’s bad news…!!!

You rang?
Or did you have another Bob in mind?
I lived in Houston back in 1980, and went down to Galveston at least once.

Likewise, I should drop in more often :)
It’s definately a shift, and they are going to continue in their attempts for the end run of the Constitution while they fight a delaying action rear guard.
I know Cheney’s office wants war with Iran real bad… Rove would look weak to them compared to someone like say… Scooter Libby?
So many reasons to want rove gone:
I think at this point the policy in the WH is so dysfunctional there is no coordination and control, main stream stories are stating Bush appears isolated… If Cheney is going to grab power and make a play to open hostilities with Iran he would have made it clear to the staff that it is all or nothing, in or out.
Hell the staff knows this, look at Scooter’s felony conviction.
Loo Hoo. @ 158
No problems here on Oahu so far. But Wednesday will be more critical. For CTuttle, Tuesday will be a big day.

Heh. I wondered if anyone would get it. I’ll mark this on my calendar. First Spew on FDL. Thanks, Suzanne!

glad my keyboard and monitor could be of (ahem) service, bob.

I caught it, and I gave ya a raspberry, like so… :P *g*
so many rove scandals to choose from as the reason – could very well be something we have not heard of – yet
Suzanne @ 195
So very true, Ma’am!!!
Suzanne @ 195
If there’s one single super-scandal waiting in the wings, it’s likely gonna be very Nixonian–using the NSA data for political spying. Remember that Rove was lecturing in the `80s to Republican groups on the political spying that was Watergate, and was most emphatic about it being both necessary and that it was of the greatest necessity to not get caught at it.
and on that note, i believe it is time for me to head out g’nite pups
Suzanne @ 195
LOL… I would just roll up in a ball laughing on the floor if it turned out to be another Ted Haggard
Curious minds want to know just how low it can go.

Bon Nuit, Ma Cheri!!!

Not the first time I’ve heard someone close to Chimpy bash his head in with the poor numbers. But T/Blossom? Those numbers are his, too.
newtonusr @ 202
Particularly since all the numbers are lumped together for ‘Congress’!!!
montag @ 197
Yah, I agree with you. This whole thing has a Nixon White House feel about it. When Chiefs of Staff (and Rove certainly carried the weight if not title) are turned out on the street…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._R._Haldeman
“In 1978, he published The Ends of Power, in which he took responsibility for fostering the atmosphere in which Watergate flourished, a stark contrast from Ehrlichman who never forgave Nixon for not pardoning him.”
I just read that book not long ago, and the parallels are striking.
CTuttle @ 203
This make any sense to you? I suggested a few years ago that ChimpCo didn’t give a shit about their numbers, as long as their agenda was served. But the almost self-deprecating way they talk about it…
McConnell and Dryer and that asshole Heather Wilson have all said it recently.
Suzanne @ 148
Good question, Suz.
I came to comment and don’t know if this already was shown,,,
Well, I’m hunkering down and bidding the Lake a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
nite tuttle. stay safe in the coming days.
Suzanne @ 195
You know whose desk the Tillman story had to go across before being released to the press???
The political director’s desk of course… That would be let me see…. Karl Rove.

I came away from it marveling at Stewart’s ability to maintain a humorous -and friendly!- conversation, while disagreeing strongly and obviously recognizing the loathsomeness of the man’s ideas (and lies). How does he DO that? Is it possible he doesn’t hate him?
Sunny @ 211-
If you’ve seen Jon Stewart being interviewed by other teevee hosts,he does”get”it. I doubt seriously he harbors much affection for the likes of Bill Kristol. I think he has them on to show who they are, maybe hoping they’ll let the mask slip for a moment.
Google Jon’s appearence with Tucker Carlson on the old Crossfire show, his interview with Larry King, and I think he did one with Bill Moyers at one time.
Good morning-
Wonder what today will bring?
N=1 @ 213
Dunno about it all, but the one thing I know for sure is that the day will be full of speculation about you-know-who. :)
Asshole Novak up:
About that game show clip,it reminds me….
Dennis Miller(ewww)is co-hosting a game show on the Game Show Network called Grand Slam. It features winners from other game shows going head to head answering various trivia questions. And yes it’s lame, and yes Miller brings a new level of sucktatude to the whole genre of crappy game shows. He must be hard up for dough.
Good morning, pups. In the NYT today Bobo has talked to a trucker and Bob Herbert points out that while we’re confiscating embroidery scissors before you can get on an airplane almost 100,000 people have been murdered in America, and that almost nobody has said a word or done a thing to stop it.

Coffee and tea are ready, and the blueberry muffins are out of the oven. Have a great day.
Good morning. Good article on Rove:
snip
Conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan wrote Monday on andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com that “Rove is one of the worst political strategists in recent times. He took a chance to realign the country and to unite it in a war – and threw it away in a binge of hate-filled niche campaigning, polarization and short-term expediency.
“His divisive politics and elevation of corrupt mediocrities to every branch of government have turned an entire generation off the conservative label. And rightly so. It will take another generation to recover from the toxins he has injected, with the president’s eager approval, into the political culture and into the conservative soul,” Sullivan wrote.

Hi aob
Oh, I have not an iota of doubt Jon “gets” it. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have been able to shred Kristol so deftly. Obviously I failed to choose my words carefully enough, never meant to suggest I seriously thought Stewart admired Kristol.
It’s Jon’s ability to go past minimal civility and create a comfortable, jocular, seemingly non-adversarial give and take atmosphere that I find remarkable. Perhaps it’s his acting experience coupled with his obvious brain power.
Did see an interview where he reamed the interviewers about the press members failing to do their jobs. They tried to divert him and told him they wanted to see him “be funny”, wasn’t that Tucker?
I could enjoy watching Colbert’s press dinner skewering daily. But in some ways it may be easier for Colbert, because he can always fall back into his personna if he gets into trouble. But Stewart always maintains his personal dignity.
I admire Jon’s ability to do it, just don’t know how he can actually manage it. Guess it struck me when he congratulated Kristol on his adept little quip. I would have been more inclined to slap his little fresh-scrubbed face.
Novak is wrong about everything again, he helps spread the GOP big lie to the 30%ers at a time when the majority of people realize they have been lied too. Now everything he and others like him say is being dismissed outright because they have a reputation for lying or at best being wrong.
Wrong about the War, WMD, Saudis did 9/11 not a single Iraqi did, why are we fighting Al Quieda in Iraq when Ossama is in Pakistan?
In short we need Novak to keep talking he pisses our base off and gets them angry/motivated enough to volunteer, send money, comment on blogs etc.
Bush has been told to let General Petraeus sell this war to the American people and Congress because Bush himself now lacks any creditbilty.
The Right Wing Media needs to recoginse they have the same problem.
I wonder how much longer it will take for the 30%ers to realize that Bush is wrong about everything? Reality keeps hitting the loyal Bushies in the face disrupting their deeply cherished comforting lies. I’m sure that Bush’s pal the Rev Moon has some data about what it takes to deprogram someone.
I sucspect that Deprogramed people much like exdrunks or exsmokers are all holier than thou to us sinners still caught up in sin.
Assuming that there is a breakingpoint (another year of losing a war, another terror attack, a military defeat) for these people Ex Loyal Bushies should once free of their programing turn on the GOP with much more anger than we have.
I really need to read about social dynamics in large groups to develope this thought more, anyone have any book ideas?
raven @ 215
shameless asshole
Dan Rather on Morning Joe talking about his upcoming program on touchscreen voting machines. There is NO quality control…a Philippine worker says they shook the boxes to make sure they didn’t hear loose parts. That’s it. Nada.
When you take part in Christy and Jane’s Meet Your Congresscritter Action tell ‘em it’s past time to restore Paper Ballots. We must have Accountability. Transparency. Count-ability.
Step one to the restoration of Democracy is making sure your vote is counted.
Fits on a postcard…I’m just sayin’….
Novak is wrong, but NPR was disgusting with their coverage yesterday. It could have been written by Rove himself.
The talking point seems to be that Rove is the white whale and that him leaving is somehow a victory for the Democrats, who are out of control.
There will be no justice for anything until Alberto Gonzales is gotten out of there. He’s the point man for injustice.
mornin’ all!
Morning everyone. Fresh post-y goodness, up and running…
TREX! That show is soooo twisted.
Which is why I love it, of course!
Thanks for the clip.
I should have taken your advice and ran away.
But like when a sign reads “wet paint”, I’m one who has to touch.
It’s always good to take time to laugh…Thanks.
