Here’s the Sunday talking head line-up. Some interesting potential here and there: (partially via Projo.com)
C-Span’s Washington Journal: 7:45am – Don Frederick, Los Angeles Times, Political Editor & Blogger | Blog; 8:30am – Scott Brennan, Iowa Democratic Party, Chairman & Ray Hoffmann, Iowa Republican Party, Chairman; 9:30am – Newspaper Articles & Viewer Calls.
This Week (ABC): Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, a Republican presidential candidate; Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a Democratic presidential candidate; and actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
FOX News Sunday: Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican presidential candidate, and his wife, Ann.
Meet the Press (NBC): Former Rep. Harold Ford Jr., chairman, Democratic Leadership Council, and Markos Moulitsas, founder and editor, DailyKos.com.
Face the Nation (CBS): Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Republican presidential candidate.
Late Edition (CNN): Pakistani Ambassador to the United States Mahmud Ali Durrani; Transportation Secretary Mary Peter; Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.; Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pa.; Jim Talent, a Mitt Romney campaign adviser; Rep. David Dreier, R-Calif., a Rudy Guiliani campaign adviser; and Buddy Roemer, a John McCain campaign adviser.
Quite the interesting topics in play based on the guests, with everything from Iraq to infrastructure issues, and a whole lot of politics in the mix. Perhaps it is just me, but I think the subject of Harold Ford’s loss last year and this op-ed that Kos and SusanG penned for the WaPo yesterday might come up in passing on Meet the Press. Here’s hoping that Markos gets an opportunity to ask Mr. Russert why it is that he even bothered booking the politically tone deaf, irrelevent, self-promoting Ford in the first place, and why Russert still masquerades as a news man now that all of us know that Dick Cheney owns him. What, you don’t remember that Cathie Martin classic?
– MTP (putting VP on MTP), plus a pro and con of putting VP on MTP Pros: best format, we control the message
Could make for some fun viewing this morning, anyway. Here’s hoping… Plus, there is likely to be quite a bit of discussion on the “buy yourself some voters, promise them a buffet and stick ‘em on a bus day” Iowa GOP straw poll.
Today’s photo is a lovely, bright orange Baltimore Oriole via the ever-excellent Julie’s Magic Light Show. I never seem to get any orioles on our feeders, despite having tried oranges and grape jelly — I just get lots of ants instead. Is there some trick that you all use to tempt these beauties? Do tell…

Christy!
Good morning! Orioles are beautiful – hope you find the secret feeding recipe to attract them.
I never see orioles up here, myself — but I do get a lot of interest from other species when I put peanut butter out.
Good morning Christy!
Kos on MTP, nice.
The one time MTP books 2 democrats, it’s because they’re feuding.
Good morning firepups.
Some Iowa background on Huckabee’s surprising finish in Ames yesterday.
Our former Gov. Vilsack and Huckabee ran together at Governor’s conferences that received a great deal of exposure here in Iowa.(A program to lose weight and get in shape) If name recognition is key, Romney spent millions while Huckabee had a good name already here in Iowa.
That’s a pretty punkish looking oriole.
Orioles will come to hummingbird feeders. I thnk especially so if you give them a perch, whcih hummingbirds don’t need.
Christie- we’ve consistently had oriole’s in the area, but rarely in the yard and on the feeders themselves. We tried a lot of tricks, but the biggest one was to put a separate feeder out for them in the backyard where there’s a lot more quiet for them. We also made a point of using oriole suet, which has certain fruits and stuff just to attract them. We have to do this -just- as they’re coming in to migrate for it to work; otherwise they pass us by. Once they’ve migrated into the area, they’ll come to the other feeders as needed. We’ve had them nest here before, with mixed success; last year we had juveniles, but I don’t think we had any this year.
That’s probably one of my favorite of my oriole pictures.

This should be a good morning. We won a two-fer in TN last year with Ford not only not getting a senate seat but having to vacate his house seat. Who could have imagined how great Steve Cohen would be?
Very last day to pack boxes. Good thing—I’m about boxed out.
And bless Kathryn in MA. She’s coming over to help. Now that’s a friend!!!
I saw earlier on Dkos that Vichy Donna is appearing on This Week with Brownback, Kuchinich, etal. Did she change her mind? Did the producers change their minds?
Christy, I am on an oriole flightway. They come to the tall trees, build new nests or reuse the hanging baskets they left last year, raise babies and then leave for the rest of the summer.
They do their mating spiral falls in front of my windows and feeders. They go into the gardens and hang out.
I’ve left them everything you’ve mentioned and more. No takers. The ultimate guests. I miss them when they leave so abruptly with the kids and wonder where they are now.
EPU’d but I thought of interest –
Perhaps someone has posted this…but it seems that some of those MOST invested in the success of the “surge” in Iraq are not at all as hopeful as those “flacks” in the jackets in Congress or the MSM that have visited the Potemkin village for a few days last month.
It appears that the Iraqis hired by the Pentagon and US Contractors are terror stricken that the “surge” is failing and that they are going to be left to fend for themselves when the US withdraws. They want refugee status visas when the collapse comes. Most can’t even go back to their home neighborhoods without risk of death at the hands of Shiite or Sunni militias…so much for having these areas “under control”.
It’s pretty clear that these folks see the end coming…even if the nattering nabobs of the MSM are still clacquing like geese for Petraeus and Bush. Remember these guys are the ones who are actually receiving the raw intelligence, understand the chatter on the streets, and know what friends and neighbors are saying is going on when the US patrols are gone. They aren’t getting “briefed” by some Major General who only drift into an area when it has been secured (temporarily) by massive force. No sh*t on the Sh*n*la being presented here. They are scared and anxiety ridden.

Orange the color of the day. The oriole, Kos’ brand color and the color of pumpkins (i.e. pumpkin heads).
I’m thinking about all of the rules enacted to ensure that a PR campaign about the surge would be successful. No photos of bombings or ieds; no uncensored email from soldiers; no blogging etc. Well, it seems to be working.
Ms C- the REALLY BIG STORY and I mean the REALLY REALLY BIG STORY out of Iowa is:
Diebold Failed Again !!!!!
Less than 40,000 votes and the stinking machine failed.

I thought I’d go to the DLC site and write them a nice little one word email, “Losers!”, but to my surprise the DLC site is not available. Site maintenance? Server crash? Couldn’t make their host payment? Couldn’t happen to a slimier bunch of men. Harold Ford, Jr was so creepy (and it takes a lot to creep me out) during the 06 election it’s no wonder this bunch of losers chose him as chairman.
anyone click on think progress this mornin?
zimbawi is using bush to jsutify his dictator tools
remember that canmpaign crap this president used claiming he was gonna “bring respect back to the office of president”?
torture, stealing information and looking up our daughters dress
I would say as far as his campaign promise, not so much, eh?
it’s understandable that markos and susan would write a piece with a bit of triumphalism in it.
but we should never assume that progressivism is or will become the mainstream. that’s not its job.
still, at this point progressives are leading the fight to regain a government that has been seized by authoritarians who, beyond being bullies, are showing themselves more frequently to be absolutely unamerican. (what makes me laugh harshly is how so many media folk still try to offer the fig leaf of means-well-but-is-incompetent to a successful agenda that is fascist in intent.)
let’s face it, we’d have a harder go of it if the bad guys weren’t so obvious and uncaring about demonstrating their real nature.
Two healthcare stories today from the coasts:
The NYTimes lead editorial speaks to the dismal state of US healthcare. But nary a single word about nursing and how it makes a significant difference in mortality and mobidity rates.(let alone provides 95% of all healthcare services delivered to patients).
The LATimes business section has a story titled, “How to Get and Keep Your Health Covered” except that it’s about health insurance coverage and not health CARE. Once again, nurses are AWOL from the discussion.
Nursing is viewed by the vast majority of the public as a soft, not quite legitimate and not quite professional service. Ignore nurses at your own peril.
Nurses and nursing get very little professional respect and even less support from the public, from government – and yes, my FDL friends – from progressives, too.
Nurses are considered part of the room and board hospital bill. They are considered sell-outs to feminism. They are considered dependent, subservient (albeit kind) to the all-knowing godlike physician, and they are expected to be obedient to their employers (for the sake of the patients, doncha know).
To be a blogger about professional nursing has been a lesson in futility and ostracism – and in hate from the wing nuts. Today’s stories have sort of gelled my decision not to torture myself any further, so the blog is changing – or may just go dormant. Still unsure. /rant
Press The Meat is on and Rapper Gregory is the host. Markos is doing quite well at calling BS on Ford and slapping down Gregory when they spout reich wing talking points.
dakine01 @ 25
live blog would be nice 2 b sure
I was just over at WaPo reading the comments left on the Kos op-ed. Overwhelmingly in favor of the op-ed. Maybe 4 or 5 negatives in the first 5 pages. When are our reps going to realize that we are the mainstream. I wish that liberals had a TV network. We’ve won over Americans (or maybe they’ve always been liberal). The only thing we’ve lost is the media. And that, unfortunately, is the reason we’re in the trouble that we’re in.
solai @ 27
we would have a network if there were the fairness doctrine
either that or we would ambush faux news with equal time suits everytime they spewed their propaganda
Ford trying to paint the DLC as progressive (which it may be in relation to the Rs but only by a small bit)
Says he wouldn’t have voted for the war if he and the rest of the DLC had known then what they know now.
(My comment): Why are they so stupid when so many of us knew before the invasion what a total catastrophe it was going to be?
n=1, thank you for the advice downstairs.
Ford says he will be at next years NetRoots Nation convention.
A bit of a smoosh fest now.
dmg @ 23
i think the dlc is dead because most of their ideas have been incorporated into the party at large. they won… but hopefully not for long. the push back is very welcome.
dakine01 @ 29
I’m going to watch. We all worked for Ford around here. He is the most charming , warm man Ive met. I knew he wasn’t very liberal but this is embarrassing
Gregory trying to play Punkinhaid’s gotcha game by bringing up old Kos posts after Ford trying to use a BillO tactic of blaming Kos for statements made by commenters.
dakine01 @ 34
It worked so well for Bill.
Ford being more conciliatory rather than confrontational about the future talking about merging factions
Millineryman @ 35
Kos basically smacked him down that “Hey, we have millions of voices in our comments that we don’t censor”
The segment has ended and so has my ability to watch Press The Meat.
Morning, all.
Don’t generally watch Sunday Barking Heads, but making an exception for M’Lord Kos. For those of you west of the Mississippi, here’s something to put you off your breakfast while you wait;
http://files.tikkun.org/curren…..3080839432
We are going to watch “This Week” to listen to Kucinich and DiCaprio. And also Ford on MTP to perhaps glean some info as to what the DLC does for the common sense(liberal/progressive) agenda. Other than that it’s diced ham ‘n eggs, toast, honeydew mellon, and virgin Mary’s and tea. And a swim on this sunny and soon to be hot Oklahoma morning. I lost a political bet last night with my friend, sooo… I’m cooking and doing the dishes this morning for her and me. We don’t have a dish washer. Ugh.
Wonder how many orange ties Markos has in his wardrobe? *g*
Ford voted for the Military Comm. Act. That was a deal-breaker for me.

Morning all — slept in a bit this morning. (THank you, Mr. ReddHedd!) How is everyone today? We don’t get MtP until later, so appreciate the heads up on content from the early birds…

You’re welcome. I hope the surgery goes smoothly, and that he’s back doing what he likes to do in no time!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 44
San Antonio runs it at 8AM cdt. Just glad I didn’t have to see Punkinhaid at that hour – Gregory was bad enough.
John Emerson @7
My brother annd his wife live in S.E. Arizona and attract orioles to their sugar-water hummingbird feeders.
billjpa @ 15
That was quite interesting, wasn’t it Bill? When it was time to tally the votes, suddenly there’s a computer glitch. Oh yeah sure there was! I bet Ron Paul won it last night and the Romney camp decided to change the vote to make himself feel better. *rolling eyes*
It’s no different than Dennis Kucinich winning most polls across the Internet. The progressives and others want Dennis, but those who have the most money in this race and who have the MSM on their side…they don’t like this. Rigging straw polls makes the “same ole, same ole” feel better and it helps them continue to frame the conversation across this country!
Tired of the mainstream-anything. I want change.
I’m afraid I’m going to have to catch MtP on TIVO anyway, because The Peanut is watching Aladdin at the moment. *g* I’ll catch up with it in a little while at nap time.
Good morning, Christy. My son loved that movie and watched it over and over. His other favorites were, “The Pagemaster” and “Oliver & Company”. So cute! I miss those days. :-)
OT: Here’s an interesting commentary by Jonathan Chait:
Hmmmm. I just noticed that going through the above link leads to a subscribers-only notice, while going through google popped up a rejectable subscription offer and gave me access to the article.
I wish someone would adk Mitt Romney about the “Big Dig” project (the one where the tunnel collapsed shortly after it opened). Wasn’t that contracted while he was governor?
KayInMaine at 50 — We’ve been on an Aladdin kick lately. This morning, we’re watching the movie, and cutting pictures out of a magazine and making a collage on some construction paper. Lots of fun here today…
Yes Mittie won the straw vote all right. Here’s how it:
“In addition to $2.5 million on television buys in Iowa, Romney has already sent out top-dollar glossy mass mailings, given stipends of $500 to $3,000 a month to some 60 Iowa “volunteer” supporters, paid the $35 charged by the Iowa Republican Party for each of his supporters casting a straw ballot, rented buses to import backers from all over the state, and supplied a barbeque for the entire mass of his attendees.”
This clown out spent his opponents by 10 to one.
N=1, it’s clear you are passionate about healthcare and nursing. So why let a few wingnut asshats put you off it? My wife is in nursiung school right now, so these issues are important to me as well. Illegitimus non carborundum-Don’t let the bastards grind you down…
solai @ 27
Create our own MSM network on the web. Sunday talks, evening news, live talk shows, indepth news shows. All on the web. Focus on the facts and give the public a Constitutional focus on issues.
There used to be oriole feeders called ‘Fun Bars’. The same company made feeders for hummers, but they were smaller and had shorter perches (they do perch to feed: save energy, yes?)
We tried putting out orange halves for the orioles in Texas. The sparrows cleaned them out, down to the rind. I still don’t know what the orioles were feeding on.
Saw an article this morning about Ghoulinani. They say his substance is firm, but he’s still working on his style. Substance firm-I guess the don’t read the Village Voice.
Twisted Martini @ 55
They make up 90% of the readership. Other reasons: Working in total isolation. Not included in any healthcare community, nor progressive community as mainstream. Out of inspiration, out of resources. No self-confidence in what I’m doing – unsure of my beliefs that it’s of benefit to anyone – and to me. That’s why, to the best of my ability to identify reasons.
Fairfax @ 52
and we have to start taking the obvious questions and dialogue straight to the repukelicans
we have to ask them point blank;
“since you agree with the reagan doctrine, that government is bad, how can a voter expect you to do anything BUT undermine succesful programs in order to make that bizzare phylosphy appear true?
why would a person vote into govenrment a person who tells them point blank they think government is the problem?
do you subscribe to the notiion that a free market is better then a regulated market?”
(that one is a killer because they HAVE to say yes and then whoever asks the question can AMBUSH with the facts demonstrating that those economics create a robber baron society)
there are SO MANT idiological points that are SO bizzare, all a democrat has to do is ask simple questions the repukelican MUST affirm and BING, they are exposed
that’s what we should do too…we should compile a list of questions that are an ambush just in the asking, questions they have to affirm to which that affirmation is clearly depraved
perris @ 28
And they would do the same against Air America Radio. And does the Fairnes Doctrine apply to the blogosphere as well?
It strikes me that bringing back the Fairness Doctrine may not be the answer we are looking for.
If any of the Republican candidates win the WH in ‘08, it will be a seamless change.
As for attracting those “Baltimore Orioles”, you might wanna ask Bill Veeck…”Twas his fault they’re there…
(And killed Little Louie in the process…)
Oklahoma kiddo @ 54
I wonder if there was tofu
hey Kay in Maine and all others- I reallly don’t want to sound so depressing but for crying out loud. It is becoming so obvious that we don’t give a damn- as a country. The vote is being fixed as we talk this AM! FIXED!
So, why the hell shoud we vote? And don’t tell me that it is our duty. Our duty is to find a way to take back what has been taken from us. That is our duty.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 62
if electronic voting is accepted, and there is no “catastrophy” to which the president suspends our constitution, (as if he hasn’t already), then those electronic machines will declare the repukelican the winner
it will have to be a puppet with no brain or a fascist…one or the other
E-mail to George S.:
George, It was good to see you keep Dennis to task with specific questions (like you used to do), but my question is why aren’t you doing that with the rest of them, especially the corporate rethuglicans (and associated dino’s)?
Two-you all missed the point about the primaries: they are inherently disenfranching the American People. Unless you subscribe to a particular party to vote for who you want (and there are many of us who aren’t interesting in joining a ‘party’), you can’t vote. So if you’re undecided, or your candidate is with another party, unless you join or switch, you are sol. Open the primaries so that we can vote for whoever we want, registered party member or no.
Three-I think the most important choice is blatantly missing from every ballet: None of the Above! Until we, as a nation of individuals, can clearly indicate that we don’t like any of them, we will always suffer with ’second best’. imo.
N=1, turn the comments off and fire away. Try to find a SEIU local or other group that can provide you support. Remember, because you are the only sane person in an insane asylum doesn’t make you crazy.
Gawd. Harrold Ford is on mtp and telling us (Dems) not to abandon the “center”. Ford doesn’t like the left. Markos doesn’t like the DLC.
billjpa @ 15
Per the July 30 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education:
As a result, California Secretary of State Debra Bowen has decertified Diebold, Hart InterCivic and Sequoia Voting Systems and is reviewing ES&S System “InkaVote Plus” http://www.californiaprogressr…..ecr_1.html
Rather a gloomy assessment, billjpa.
I intend to vote; work getting other people registered to vote even if it means I must Talk With People; and contribute to a massive effort on election day to get our people to the polls.
This isn’t a question only of duty. I have children, nieces, and nephews that will bear the consequences of our political decisions and efforts. Time to get to work.
Twisted Martini @ 58
Did they really use the words “substance’ and “firm” together in the same sentense to describe him? Because I see ’substance is firm” more of a social/lifestlye/values duality comment then character quality… Not quite an endorsement. Maybe VV editor has a good sense of humor…I agree he is still working on his “style” and I’ll stop there.
sangemon @ 61
IIRC, the Fairness Doctrine applied only to those licensed to use the publicly owned airwaves. So it wouln’t apply to the cable and/or the Internet. It might, however, apply to satellite radio and TV.
Not getting any info from Harrold Ford on mtp about what exactly the DLC does. Nothing new there.
Markos doing the job on Ford. The DLC wants to cut taxes Markos says.
Harrold Ford is a rascal.
Ghoul vs. Hil
Who wins.
Hil will take CT, so I’m free to vote for none of the above.
My bet: Ghoul wins.
Reason he wins: Hil says she’ll keep troops in Iraq. Might as well have Ghoul in the WH in that case.
Linda Douglas is on Reliable Sources… she used to be a local newscaster but has been working on the political analysis for the last 10 years or so…
she’s a pretty sharp cookie…
Harrold Ford says the progressive are wrong for blaming the DLC for supporting the Iraq war. That is exactly what the DLC did.
The DLC gave strong support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Prior to the war, Will Marshall co-signed a letter to President Bush from the Project for the New American Century endorsing military action against Saddam Hussein. The Project for the New American Century said in 1998 that they wanted to take out Saddam Hussein but needed a “Pearl Harbor on American soil” first in order to garner support for invading Iraq. During the 2004 Primary campaign the DLC attacked Presidential candidate Howard Dean as an out-of-touch liberal because of Dean’s position of only pursuing Osama Bin Laden instead of invading Iraq. The DLC dismissed other critics of the Iraq invasion such as filmmaker Michael Moore as “Anti-American” and members of the “loony left” [7]. Even as domestic support for the Iraq War plummeted in 2004 and 2005, Marshall called upon Democrats to balance their criticism of Bush’s handling of the Iraq War with praise for the President’s achievements and cautioned “Democrats need to be choosier about the political company they keep, distancing themselves from the pacifist and anti-American fringe.”
Kucinich is on fire with Snuffalufagus.
wigwam @ 73
the fairness docrine is not the ONLY solution we are looking for, it’s just one of them…the problems that have been caused by the fascists in office abound and their will have to be a host of solutions, there will not be one solution that will solve all
here’s what the fascists don’t understand;
progressives have absolutely no problem allowing opposing points of view, we would welcome them on air america in true side by side comparison and obviously we would welcome rebuttal on faux opinion as well
the airewaves are not the property of the lecensees, the airwaves belong to the lencensers.
they are not allowed to do whatever they want with our stuff and the airwaves are our stuff
Markos makes the point that the left is becoming “mainstream”. In answer to Ford saying the left is out of touch with the mainstream.
Markos doesn’t seem inclined to HRC.
sangemon at 78 — Do tell. For those of us watching a cartoon with our kiddo, a little more detail would be much appreciated. *g*
I wish someone would ask Mitt Romney about the “Big Dig” project (the one where the tunnel collapsed shortly after it opened). Wasn’t that contracted while he was governor?
The Big Dig was started when Bill Weld (R) was governor, and then passed down through the hands of these other Massachusetts Republican governors: Paul Celluci, Jane Swift and finally Mitt Romney.
It was a Republican/government privatization debacle through and through.
Ford says “millions subscribe to the DLC”.
Markos did an excellent job of flaming Ford. But is Markos geeky enough? Even more important, is Gregory weenie enough?
Ford speaking this morning on meet the press is about as exciting as going down on a cardboard box (ht William Burroughs). That man sure can drone. I had to keep my eyes opened with toothpicks to make it through.
Markos is an energetic spark in comparison and spoke as though he were actually wanting to tell someone something.
I thought it was very good that he extended his hand to Ford and pressed him to come next year’s NetRoots Nation.
Sorry if I’m violating etiquette here, but I wanted to bring a question here that I asked in a previous thread, because I’m truly hoping for some insight on this one.
I wonder why no one is paying more attention to Bill Richardson?
He’s a proven diplomat, knows how to work with the UN, seems to have the most realistic energy plan, and isn’t a fear-monger.
Someone help me out here?
At a time when everyone seems to be looking for an experienced diplomat who would help restore America’s reputation in the global community;
why isn’t Richardson getting more play, do you think?
IN
Jonathan @ 75
As someone who was in and around NYC during much of Rudy’s time as mayor, I disagree. Hill was poised to mop the floor with Rudy in the Y2K senate race until his cancer gave him an excuse to drop out.
Hillary over Rudy even if she says she’ll keep some troops in Iraq if only for the knowledge that judges she would nominate would be more rational than the “strict constructionists” Rudy has promised.
Believe me, Rudy has many ways to self-immolate. It all depends on which one captures the public attention. Judi? Appointing Mob connected crooks? Missing family values? Arrogance? Building a hide-away love nest and calling it an emergency command center? Claiming to have spent as much time at ground zero as the fire rescue workers? Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, and Patrick Dorismond?
There are just SO many negatives to choose from that will be placed in front of the people. And the good thing is, all those negative items are the truth and it ain’t swift boating when it’s the truth.
Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush1, Clinton, Bush2 represent over 40 years of incremental movement to the political right. Harold Ford and the DLC “center” is way out in right field.
If one dislikes the DLC, then this begs the question how do you lend support to HRC, a person with deep and lasting ties to this organization?
Ian Masters will have on his KPFK radio show(90.7 FM in LA and streaming at kpfk.org):
- Sidney Blumenthal, a former assistant and Senior Advisor to the President of the United States, Bill Clinton, and currently a Senior Fellow at the New York University Center on Law and Security, and a regular columnist for the Guardian of London and Salon.com.
- Nouriel Roubini, an internationally known expert in the field of international macroeconomics.
- David Wagner, a member of the computer science faculty at UC Berkeley. He is the Principle Investigator of the University of California team and co-chair of the 2007 USENIX/ACCURATE Electronic Voting Technology Workshop, which tested California voting systems.
- Scott Lindlaw, an Associated Press reporter based in San Francisco covering national security, the military and politics.
- Michael Weinstein is a leader of the movement to restore the Constitutionally mandated separation of church and state in the United States military, and the founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.
DETAILS:
why isn’t Richardson getting more play, do you think?
Maybe because he isn’t polished enough? MSM doesn’t take him seriously because of it and maybe the Latino thing, and also because he doesn’t have enough money to get out there into the public to bypass the MSM and let people see him. Also because he hasn’t posed on Kos?
(emptied all the two cents out of my change purse)
billjpa @ 65
If you’re not depressed then you’re not paying attention! I don’t know what to tell you, Bill, to cheer you up. One thing that needs to be done is storm the Congress WHILE THEY’RE IN SESSION. That might wake them up!
The republic is broken and I blame the republicans who learned before the 2000 election that stealing elections is the key for them to stay in power. It makes my stomach turn.
Gonzo & the US Attorney firings was a political move, but this case has more to do with voter caging. The missing emails of Karl Rove and the ones at the RNC are key to getting to the bottom of what went on during the 2004 election with Ken Blackwell, who was Sec. of State at that time. Gonzo is protecting these criminals. It’s disgusting!!!
So, I don’t know what to tell you to make you feel better, Bill. I’m depressed as well. When I heard last night that there was a ‘computer glitch’ (in a straw-poll no less), my first thought was, “Yep, 2008 will be stolen from the American people and these guys who call themselves “true Americans” are disgraceful”.
InfoNut at 86 — Richardson has gotten quite a bit of discussion here, and we are hoping to have him on for a chat in the near future if we can work out scheduling issues with the campaign. That said, even with his extensive diplomatic and policy experience, he has an unfortunate habit of sticking his experienced foot in his mouth at the worst possible time…and that has the side-effect of quashing any momentum that he gets going right back down to a crawl. On the one hand, a non-scripted candidate is awfully fun because you never know what will happen. But that doesn’t help each and every time a bad unscripted moment occurs. And that makes the calculation in supporting him a bit more of a risk than a lot of folks have been willing to take, I think.
But that’s just how things seem from the outside looking in. If you are a Richardson supporter, why is that important to you? If you are going to toss a question into the ring, folks are going to want to know your motivation in tossing it out — so you ought to go ahead and answer that up front now.
Lets see how these events make how my day will go…
1. First morning since All the kids moved out
2. Coffee maker croaked … thank God for the french press that was the Xmas gift
AND the AZ State Democratic Party passed a resolution yesterday to demand Impeachment of Bush & Cheney with a friendly amendment accepted to add comma Gonzo with only TWO Nay votes! There were over 275 state committee persons in attendance with a total of over 400 with proxies.
And … no fair the Sunday talk does not start in AZ for another 30-60 minutes!
InfoNut @ 86
I would LOVE to be able to support Richardson for just the reasons you named.
However.
Every time he opens his mouth in debates he seems to chew on shoe leather. He makes TOO many unforced errors whether it is mis-representing his athletic career or sounding too scripted when he should be showing passion.
And on top of everything else (which I have really barely touched on), there are way too many rumors of a Clinton type zipper problem.
It ain’t fair, it’s just real.
The DLC views it’s function as choosing Democratic candidates for us and ramming them down our throats. In this house we deeply resent that.
I keep hoping that somehow Air America is put on tv. I give up emailing MSNBC,CNN etc. It’s had no effect. Instead they give contracts to Beck and Scarborough. HOW can we make this happen?
dakine01 @ 87
Oh, I agree. I just think 98% of voters wouldn’t know what you know about Ghoul. I also think, FWIW, that when the negatives start flying in both directions, Americans will just tune out.
It should be obvious by now that there is a struggle going on for the soul, heart and mind of the Democratic Party.
Off topic:
I’m having lunch with Ned Lamont and Chellie Pingree (she’s running for Tom Allen’s seat) today in Portland, Maine and I am so excited about it! After that, there’s a fundraiser scheduled. They’re two of my most favorite progressives. I’ll be doing a post on my blog either tonight or tomorrow.
Ned is fundraising for both Chellie & Tom Allen, which is a wonderful thing. :-)
Just thought I’d share…
dakine01 @ 87
new york voters are usually democrats and are definately more sophisticated then the voters rudy attracts
there will be anti women, anti democrat, anti clinton votes that rudy will get ourside of new york that he doesn’t get in new york
she would beat him in new york but will have trouble in questionable states
I don’t know if she’ll be a good or bad president but I am hopiong she self distructs so gore steps in.
I personally don’t think hilary is electable, I beleive the fascist machine will turn out in droves as an anti hilary, anti clinton voting block
The DLC should form their own political party. And quit hiding what they do and what their ultimate agenda is.
did i misinterpret that look ford gave markos? i think he was really pissed – and i’ve not seen that before on MTP.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 83
Looks like a straw man argument to me. How many million subscribers do you have?
I can assure you than many millions more do not subscribe to the DLC.
selise @ 103
do tell selise
(do tell=my new method for live blog request)
Oh dear. Someone’s in the kitchen banging pans. I think this is a subtle invitation for me to pay off the political bet I lost last night. Time to put on my chef’s hat.
tony Snow is going to be on C-Span QA at 8;00 EDT, I’m not sure if it is a call in program.

hackworth @ 104
That’s right.
perris @ 101
Rethugs and their Media Arm (that would be the entire MSM) want to run against either a woman (with breasts!) or a black man (with black skin!).
Ah, bless you Margaret Carlson, she said it on MTP.
The Democratic base and the mainstream public are in sync.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 81
Well, Snuffalufagas was just gobsmacked that Kucinich proposed the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Strength through peace rather than peace through strenth.
Snuffalufagas: “What do you when the troops are home? How do you prevent Teh Massacres?”
Kucinich: “Engage the other Arab nations in the region in a diplomatic effort to stabilze the region by forming peacekeeping force that would move in as we move out”
Snuffalufagas: “How can you abandon the center? Won’t this hurt the Democratic Party?”
Kucinich: “I am the center, George, the majority of the American people are to left of me. The political spectrum has moved so far the the right that the left is now the center.”
It was good to see someone stand up to that bobblehead.
Harold Ford went out of his way to be conciliatory with Kos-he even pledged to be at Netroots Nation next year. There was definitely a “can’t we all get along” theme. David Gregory was really pushing the “netroots=nutty lefties” theme but he didn’t get any traction with Markos who pushed back against that pretty well. I would have liked a better effort to equate where mainstream America is now on dozens of issues and how closely the netroots currently reflects that center.
Overall, it was clear to me that the DLC understands that it needs to pay closer attention to core democratic principles if it wishes to remain relevant.
perris @ 105
i’m sorry, i just happened to glance at the tv. i think it was when markos was tying tax cuts with crumbling infrastructure.
Rayne @ 110
the sentiment is correct, it’s framed badly though.
“in sync” is too much a buzz phrase
I would prefer;
“one and the same”
? OT..
Fatigue cripples US army in Iraq
Exhaustion and combat stress are besieging US troops in Iraq as they battle with a new type of warfare. Some even rely on Red Bull to get through the day. As desertions and absences increase, the military is struggling to cope with the crisis
………….
Hanna and his men are not alone in being tired most of the time. A whole army is exhausted and worn out. You see the young soldiers washed up like driftwood at Baghdad’s international airport, waiting to go on leave or returning to their units, sleeping on their body armour on floors and in the dust.
………..
http://observer.guardian.co.uk…..52,00.html
And they are talking about another decade in Iraq. Them and what army? Five more killed yesterday. We really need to prosecute these people to have any chance of saving this country.
I’m in Baltimore and we never see orioles (and they haven’t shown up at the ball park for many years either.)
perris @ 114
perris, watch the clip if you can catch it. I paraphrased what she said, was in so much shock that she said it that I didn’t catch it word for word.
Kevster @ 112
Making nice with the DLC is a big mistake. Kick them to the curb. They are republicans.
Kucinich makes the point on “This Week” that attacking Pakistan would set the stage for nuclear war between India and Pakistan.
From Wikipedia -
Kevster @ 112
That’s not my take, Kevster, we’ll have to agree to disagree.
I thought Ford was condescending and disdainful of Kos and the Kossacks; I also came away thinking that Ford doesn’t have a f*cking clue how blogs or a community blog works, likely prepped for all his hot air by staffers.
Gregory also permitted Ford to take over the segment by constantly butting in and overtalking Kos, which Kos had to constantly fight back. That’s a sign to me that Ford has no clue that he was talking to more than half a million voters and not just Kos.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 119
Absolute truth. It would certainly move things in that direction. Rather like smacking a hornet’s nest. Like what Dubya did in Iraq. Good thing there were no nukes.
Ford was very condescending toward Markos.
Re richardson~ recd a mailing from him yesterday but after the bit about being gay being a choice….well I just can’t support someone who doesn’t even realize the importance of the question….
happy sunday pups!
i found this astounding, and am surprised that the net and msm isn’t jumping all over it……….michael gerson, former head speechwriter for bush, is a plagiarist….and is being outed by a former underling….he of the ‘mushroom cloud’ and ‘axis of evil’ memes…….the talking point guru for condi, dick, etc…….
i posted this in the come saturday morning thread by phoenix woman, and frank 33 added a link…….

Fresh thread for everyone…
Anyone notice that Romney lied in his dog-on-the-car story?
First, in his original story, the punch line was all the dog poop he had to hose off his car throughout the trip. He now says the crate was sealed or totally enclosed. He also says the dog “loved to be in the crate” and voluntarily went in the crate… on top of the car… I’d like to see that for myself! What- he had a ramp or something?
Second, if his original story was a lie, the sealed crate is no more humane than a vented crate.
He claims he did not know it was against state law to transport animals on top of a car.
Add the other facts that Wallace brought up about state employment figures, Romney is not very bright in constructing his lies. At least it shows he’s not skilled at lying like our present president.
I heard many points which should be at the ready for future negative ads should he be a contender in 2008.
wigwam @90 – I caught a book salon on cspan2 yesterday with Masters and Weinstein and cannot recommend it enough will watch it agian and ordered Mr Michael Weinsteins book. Did you know Joe Wilson is on the board of Military Religious Freedom Foundation?
Thanks for the heads up…
Thought Kos was good on Meet the Press but lost an opportunty to really define the DLC and its failures.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 93
(Long, boring story alert)
I spent 12 years living in New Mexico, where I was an extremely active advocate for children with disabilities. About 4 or 5 years ago, Richardson publicly announced a restructuring of disabilities services programs. We felt his decision was poorly thought out and could have a major negative impact on children in the state.
I was the Chair of the largest advocacy committee at the time, and proceeded to make a serious PITA of myself. I made so much noise that I eventually got to sit down with Richardson, and make the case for further study of the issue.
He then publicly retracted his decision (citing the need for more study) and put together a group to look at options and make recommendations surrounding the restructuring. I felt this showed that he was willing to listen, and wasn’t afraid to admit being hasty.
(/boring story)
When I heard he was running for president, I was rather bemused. After all, who is Richardson, right?
But the more I listen to him talk, and the more I know about his stance on topics, the more I think he’s the best candidate.
That said, he does have his flaws. I’m not impressed with his stance on gay marriage, and I’m a bit concerned that perhaps he has too much ethnic bias. (After all, he first came out in support of AGAG simply because AG was hispanic.)
He is a bit unpolished, and he can be his own worst enemy. I guess that actually works for me. He’s not your average talking head career politician.
IN
Third place winner in the computer-glitched (not mentioned)straw poll, Brownback looks like the devil himself. Scary coal black eyes. “No draft needed. Political solution on the ground. Push for political surge. Send Jim Baker.”
What if Stephanop asked Brownback which Jim Bakker he would send?
“Based on your conservative ideal of the melding of Church and State in order to form an American Taliban, I have to ask for clarity’s sake: Which Jim Baker you are referring to? Tammy Fay’s husband or Bush family attorney?”
dakine01 @ 31
That should be fun. I wonder what kind of reception he’ll get. Hopefully just stone cold silence.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 123
The DLC are nothing but condescending towards the Democratic base.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 99
And the DLC will not win that fight.
From a commentary on the Buddhist “Sutra of Eight Realizations of Great Beings”:
“When the Buddha says that sentient beings are ‘deluded,’ he means that they accept ‘false appearances’ as being wholly real. The Buddha described this state of delusion as being like a dream, but he did not mean that some absolute self or being (ego) is doing the dreaming. He meant that no self is dreaming, that the dream is dreaming itself, and that while the dream is dreaming itself, it has no ’stable essence.’ If we can awake from this dream, he said, then we will see that there exists an awareness that is far greater than anything we had imagined before.”
—
The dream that is dreaming itself turns on the delusion (believed real without question) that manifestations (all manifestations) exist independently – including and especially the main character, ego.
Such narrowness of awareness ties expectations and intentions to the physical body, while clouding the mind with fears (of impermanence) and doubts (of permanance – what happens after ‘I’ die?) and ‘disappears’ the connection to the Ocean of Consciousness.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 49
Well, if you picked up MSNBC to watch Keith Olbermann, (basically the only reason I did), you can catch MTP at 7pm AND 10pm PDT.(I think that’s 10pm and 1am Eastern).
The DLC website was back up so I sent them this on their message form:
“Move a little further to the right, please. Then you too can be just another echo chamber for the AEI, Heritage Foundation, and The Weekly Standard. Also, remember to start sucking up to Pat Robertson, Richard Land and the rest of the ultra right so-called Christians. You’ll love it over there. Like the DLC, the right absolutely worships wealth above all else. Particularly wealth accumulated through the exploitation of workers and endless war, which is itself the exploitation of the disenfranchised and poor.
B’bye.”
Yeah, I know, “exploitation of the workers” is allegedly a far leftist phrase but if the foo shits, wear it. And the whole thing is probably a bit trite, but I didn’t figure they deserved a lengthy, intelligent, balanced screed regarding their inadequacies. Given three minutes at one of their meetings, however, I would only expand upon what I wrote.
hey folks- Guess what? I am not in the least depressed. I am disgusted, fed up and angry as hell. Remember, this was a straw poll and they screwwd with the machines! What the hell is wrong with a plain old paper ballot? So what if it takes a little more time to count. At least the bastards won’t have it as easy as they do now.
Storm the congress? Nah. All that will cause is some arrests. Now, if we wait till after the kids go back to school and then organise the largest march in the history of this country and we urge all those who can to plan on staying for awhile- Well! maybe the idiots will get the message. They are raping us and we just simply can’t lay there and ask them if they need help!
I watched all the stump speeches the GOP candidates gave that were at the Iowa straw poll rabid repub shindig last night on C-SPAN. George Bush was never mentioned except to say how he has kept us safe because there have been no attacks on US soil so fighting in Iraq is right because we’re fighting them there..la tee da tee da da. If this is such a great strategy why is it not working for Great Britain? Healthcare was not on the picnic table in Iowa. What we should do to end/win the war in Irag was missing in action which means they ALL would continue it indefinitely. No mention of the surge(s). Something about a flat tax, fihting porn our number one concern, and if we pray everywhere everyday everything will get better. There are’nt two america’s, there’s two different planets here. Romney and his son’s looked like wolves who had just robbed the chicken house. He was almost crying during his “acceptance” speech that he had (purchased) won the Iowa straw poll. Brownback was far and away the most frieghtening. What a religious fanatic. Man the religious right is alive and well.
