I gotta give Mitt Romney credit for trying to get under Rudy Giuliani’s skin:
“I think if they thought they could have won, they’d have been here,” Romney said on “Fox News Sunday.” “If you can’t compete in the heartland, if you can’t compete in Iowa in August, how are you going to compete in January when the caucuses are held? And then how are you going to compete in November of ‘08?”
And Rising Mike Huckabee is getting his licks in as well:
Huckabee, who came in second in the straw poll, said Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that the three no-shows were scared of competing in a conservative environment that does not favor their more moderate stands on some issues.
“What they did was forfeit the game,” Huckabee said.
Good they are both forgetting St Ronnie’s Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican. Pass the popcorn.

Hey Teddy – buttered or plain?
TSF!!
zed? nah, but a Tres!
AK, you are a wonderful son. Even if your dad forgets to say so, you know that he loves you and appreciates all that you do.
September 11th, and your little dog too
;>)
They forgot to show up for the straw pole.
They forgot armed robbery was illegal…
DB, that captured the inner rudy so well
C-span1 has Christie and Digby right now!!!
Yup, I’m back in Alaska. Ready to get back to lotsa stuff. The garden is almost overwhelming. Just picked some beets, carrots, potatoes a cabbage and a garlic that a coyote or dog fight had disturbed. Looks like the makings for some borscht, eh?
or a good veggie soup or maybe some stuffed cabbage?
I think it’s going to be a very long few months for Rudy.
There are yet more rocks to be overturned along his path.
If Rudy goes down, it won’t be because da Mittster and Shuckabee are yelling, “nyaah, nyaah” at him. It’ll be because of what he himself has done in the past. I suspect he has many more enemies than friends, and not just among firefighters….
Loo Hoo. @ 4
well, i’m not all that satisfied with my sonship but then I’m admittedly my worst critic. dad and mom and i have always been quite close, so much so that i had to wait to find a girl who could share such closeness to marry. fortunately, laura (my late wife) could. so that bond has maintained and while my mom is no longer “here” she has not left the bond (no has laura for that matter) and dad and I are still “connected”. He and I still mesh except when he is in great pain or heavy alzheimers.
Of course, these taunts are equally aimed at OldLord McCain and He Who Hasn’t Declared, Arthur Branch. I wonder what’s taking Arthur so long? Is there something in the Mrs’ past they’ve got to get straightened out, or in his own?
Good they are both forgetting St Ronnie’s Eleventh Commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican. Pass the popcorn.
“everything’s changed after 9/11 …….”
Wow, if 9/11 repealed the Eleventh Commandment, we are in for a real treat this year.
oops dad is getting ready for bed. guess it’s not an all nighter after all. be excellent to each other and i’ll see everyone in late night tomorrow.
TeddySanFran @ 15
Now, if someone would just explain that to the Democrats in Congress, the fireworks would be great.
TeddySanFran @ 15
Newt the Grinch has already laid out the appetizers. It’s going to be a 5 course meal I’m told.
wow, digby is a proprietor
Watching this YKos panel on C-span, three of the five are women, what was running through Ellen’s head when she wrote her column?
CTuttle @ 8
bless you.
may your karma be reduced immensely.
carry on, pilgrims. the madness begins today for me and i’m off to pretend like i’m working ….
CTuttle @ 20
The new pair of Jimmie Chu’s she is going to buy with the money she got?
fahrender @ 18
Guten Tag, Fahrender! I don’t think Newt will toss his hat in the ring tho!
Suzanne @ 7
Thanks, S. – I’ve got another one in the pipe should he persist with this electile dysfunction of a campaign.
;>)
G’nite, FDL. Be wise, and kind to each other.
CTuttle @ 20
“Obey my TradMed overlords” that’s what.
Recall, please, that Ellen did not attend the event. Nor, apparently, did she watch it on CSPAN. Much easier to repeat the accepted narrative when neither firsthand experience nor facts on the ground intervene.
TeddySanFran @ 13
What? Who’s Arthur Branch?
darkblack @ 25
Nite, LOL, …electile dysfunction…!!! 8-)
TSF, are you referring to Freddy Thompson?
Suzanne @ 29
Seems so. Arthur Branch was the name of Fred Thompson’s character on L&O.
TeddySanFran @ 15
They’ve already started. By October – 2007 – we’ll have stuff from South Carolina to put up on YouTube where they’re claiming the single best decision by a state in US history was the secession of that state. All you’d have to do would be to ask Romney down there “Do you think the decision of South Carolina to secede from the union in 1860 was an over-reaction to Federal intrusion into the state’s affairs?” Then they’d have to pile onto one another, trying to outdo the Mittster…
Or have somebody question who has the most photogenic trophy wife, or who thinks the world was created by noon on October 23, 4004 BC.
Aha, I never watched that show so was unaware. Thanks montag.
My pop culture trivia is sorely lacking now that I am an empty nester.
Gringrich’s is interesting. He’s playing (at least he says so publicly) with the notion of entering the race. Now there’s someone with some fire and charisma…I could see Rep’s going for him over Guiliani (the rest appear DOA, but maybe I’m too harsh or early on that call), despite Gringich’s own checkered past…
Teddy’s off looking up tomorrow’s hot news, no doubt.
Suzanne @ 32
I rarely watched it myself, and only when over at someone’s house who wanted to watch it. No TV in my home.
montag @ 30
Bring back Diane Wiest. Much more interesting.
How many republicans are still in office that were there when Gingrich was speaker?
I rarely watch network tv anymore – mainly PBS, Discovery Science Channel, and HGTV (House and Garden). I used to watch 24 religiously but this year, I just quit about halfway through the season. Local news and, of course, KO and TDS.
Konking out here, nighters!
(waving goodnite to the leaving sleepy pups)
Ed*ard Teller @ 31
Hoo-wee, that is pretty cynical, funny, but cynical!!! ;-)
Loo Hoo. @ 37
Far, far, far too many. Apart from the few bumped off in 2006, most of `em. There have been a few retirements (such as Bob Barr), and some real election losses by real losers (like “B-1 Bob” Dornan), but I would guess 75-80% that were there in 1998, when Gingrich left, are still around.
the question about newt is whether or not he can overcome his past scandals – the whys of why he is not in congress anymore.
Suzanne @ 43
2008 is shaping up to be the perfect storm year of GOP imperfections. Their evangelical base are already blanching at the requests for forgiveness. If the Southern Baptists started charging for indulgences for GOP candidates’ past and present sins, they could bring in billions over the next 14 months.
Suzanne @ 43
The book deal might be too complicated to fit into a sound bite (even though the hypocrisy of it, after the Wright business, was quite egregious). But, the general misbehavior ought not go without notice or mention (e.g., screwing the help on one’s Congressional office desk after telling the second wife that there was an emergency at the office).
Newtie’s just so incredibly slippery that no one in the press is going to really pin him down–and they will give him a lot of air time once he’s actually declared.
Ed*ard Teller @ 44
I’m surprised they haven’t thought of it yet.
Suzanne @ 43
Particularly, the hypocrisy of impeaching Clinton for his sexual dalliances, all the while he was embarked upon his own extra-marital affairs!!!
I just want a hypocrisy-free candidate who tells the truth and who’s actions back up the words spoken.
Seems like it is too much to ask for.
Rudy is starting to remind me of the Bruce Willis’ character in that I see dead people movie – Rudy is toast but don’t know it yet.
Well, I’m bidding ya’ll another fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!! 8-)
Loo Hoo. @ 34
I’m back from the premier of the new season of Robot Chicken on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Yes, Arthur Branch is Fred’s Law & Order character.
g’nite ct
that’s about it for me tonight folks. g’nite all
Suzanne @ 48
it is a good start.
those are the prerequisites.
but i want more.
a lot more.
I am also outta here. Good sleep to all, see you tomorrow!
Today’s posting by Glenn Greenwald is a masterpiece. He revisits the much-touted O’Hanlon-and-Pollack Iraq travelog, and methodically shows it to be MSM-embraced propaganda scam by compliant hacks on wingnut welfare.
Here is Glenn’s report on his interview of O’Hanlon: http://www.salon.com/opinion/g…..index.html
Here is a follow-up by DanJoaquinOz on additional aspects of the interview’s transcript:
http://letters.salon.com/opini…..08ce3.html
Here is Greenwald’s assessment of the character and state of mind of O’Hanlon and Pollack: http://letters.salon.com/opini…..1d550.html
Ghouliani sucked all the life out of NYC…..Before 9-11 he was FINISHED…he is a race-bait-er, a disgusting sub-human.
I left NYC during the Ghouliani years because he destroyed communities by Disneyfying them. All of the diverse areas were purposely made to (appear) the same so he could get credit for”cleaning up the city”…IT wasn’t working..it was a disaster, NOW…all those who know where all of Ghoulianini’s dirty sh*t is buried, are waiting in the wings and one by one they will emerge. all I can say is GOOD RIDDANCE to one of the most dispicable people EVER!
So the religous wing of the GOP seems to be saying we can win and the moderates are afraid to challenge us.
Please God let them win I want a fundementalist candidate attacking abortion when the Fundies have enough votes to repeal Roe vs Wade.
montag @ 11
Bernie Kerik has potential. Seems to be a gift that keeps on giving..
Franco @ 57
Know what digby calls him? Benito Giuliani.
wigwam @ 56
We’ll look back at this period and for me, Glenn will be the writer who best defined whatever this is.
my bold
The only thing more astounding than Glenns ‘working’ of the subject is the audacity of the answer… “Yes, I’m a stenographer. So what?”
And a razor-thin second to Digby.
SunnyNobility @ 59
Rudy’s, so far, survived Kerik. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few more suspect deals that the two of them are involved in that might still see the cold light of day….
The Subprime crisis should weaken the Corporate wing of the Republican party by hurting their ability to give the GOP their traditional fundraising edge. They were the money, the Fundies were the manpower.
Never mind the war the public now has to consider the consequences of a Fundie win.
At a time when the Republican argument about being probusiness and better for the economy thanks to the subprime meltdown is at its weakest.
Its a perfect storm!
things come undone @ 63
One could also wish for the very wealthy fundie preachers to have put a whole lot of their ill-gotten booty into hedge funds heavy in mortgage-based CDOs… believin’ as they do, in the so-called free market system an’ all.
Given the Republican weakness I don’t think we need to pander to them on the war issue which is our strongest card.
When we play that hand our strongest hand we should bet big. Healthcare is our second biggest issue we should bet big there too!
Playing to the center might be what the media wants and why this far out in the primary election they are already anointing Hilary as the winner.
This new accelerated primary election should help Hilary before voters get the chance to learn the issues. Provided that the Democratic activist who traditionaly vote in primaries don’t know what the candidates represent?
Shouldn’t Democratic Primary voters be the most aware of the candidates and the most wanting for big change? Also they should be the most aware of the Republicans weakness this election.
I don’t see how Hilary with her centerist postions can expect to win by getting endorsements from Democratic power brokers.
I think the MSM is wrong about the strength of her support. Given how wrong the MSM has been about the war I don’t think their repeating the “cough ” facts about Hilary being the front runner will make them true.
montag @ 64
Wish for it heck I KNOW the hot stock types ( I confess I do it myself sometimes) when your making money you tell everyone!
Romney is for example a church goer and a hedgefund person after the church gossip spread it around about how much Romney made I bet the entire congragation wanted in.
I wonder if his fund did the subprime mambo of buying on margin? Not that I expect us to find out unless the fund collapses! Hedge funds don’t have to report their results like a reguler stock or fund Mitt I’m sure will make sure we never hear any bad news until after the election, if he can help it.
Given that Mitt wants to be president he has extra reasons to cover up any losses at his fund.
things come undone @ 66
Mitt still strikes me as the sort of investor that would go long on Nigerian email opportunities….
montag @ 67
Your thinking Mitt is so stupid that his hedge fund might collapse before the Primary election? Ah Man! I wanted the hedgefund meltdown to be an issue we could run against personified by Romney in the general election.
If Rudy is the GOP Presidential candidate the religious types will say he lost because of his moral problems.
Mitt as a hedge fund person and a religious candidate could discredit both the business and religious wings of the party!
TeddySanFran @ 26
Maybe Ellen Goodman is unaware of the old Botswana (Tsetswane) poem:
“We were the ones who first ploughed the Earth when Modise (God) made it…
We were the ones who made the food…
We were the ones who look after the men when they are little boys, when they are young men, and when they grow old and are about to die.
We are always there.
But we are just women, and nobody ever sees us.”
(Poem transcribed by Alexander McCall Smith “The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency”}
newtonusr @ 61
I suspect there was a note of sheepishness rather than defiance in O’Hanlon’s answer. I get that sense from the way he beat around the bush and drew out the answer with a long preamble that added absolutely nothing. Defiance would have been short and blunt, like your paraphrasing.
I found Glenn’s response in the last link to be very interesting wrt the attitudes of the O’Hanlon and Pollack.
WSJ reports Rove to resign at the end of August
GOP fundies attempts to distance themselves from a losing Romney race would probably center on their view that Mormons are not real Christians.
This could help us pry the Mormons away from the Fundies.
In fact who ever wins the GOP presidential nomination will get the blame for their expected loss.
I think Rudy would be the easiest to beat but a Mitt loss could benefit us the most by discrediting both the business and religious wings of the party.
Tompson provides us no extra benefit if he loses that I know about, a loss by him would hurt neither branch of the GOP much.
Lemming @ 71
What Why Link? OMG!
things come undone @ 68
Nah, just saying that Mitt’s as much a silver spoon baby as was GHWB or GWB. If he hadn’t started well off, he’d be doing underwear modeling for Sears catalogs….
things come undone @ 73
Ah, if this is true, it is as I suspected. Rove has no intention of getting out of the game, contrary to previous reports. He’s going to work for someone soon. Let’s see which poor sonofabitch in the Republican ranks thinks Rove is going to do him some good….
things come undone @ 63
I was looking at where the money came for Bilbray’s narrow win in North San Diego Country and the vast bulk of it was coming from realtors, developers and car dealers (His previous major sponsor was a drug-dealer who went on to sell ephedrine as a “dietary supplement called Metabolife…but he went to jail after scandals related to coercing employees to support Bilbray who handcuffed the FDA on investigating “dietary supplements”. Then dozens of peoplekeeled over dead from the “diet supplement”.).
It would seem that realtors, developers and car dealers would likely be having a hard time finding the funds to support their Pugs due to the sub-prime collapse. So many of these folks preyed on the middle and lower middle class with dreams of equity…and even gambling-like speculation…but then are trapped when the chickens come home to roost. The Ponzi Scheme has collapsed.
Rove is out I wonder what crime is he resigning for before being indicted there are just so many to choose from I need a scorecard!
Per this:
things come undone @ 76
Nope, there’s no indictment pending. (Now, yes, a subpoena to appear before the HJC, but, that’s something he would and could ignore.)
This is about placing himself in the next White House–or burnishing his reputation (and his fees). If true (and that remains to be seen), someone’s made him an offer he can’t refuse.
Most desperate: John McCain (possible, but not the most likely).
Most conniving: Rudy! Rudy! Rudy! (Giuliani offers qualities that Rove can use to advantage, especially amongst the religious right, where Rudy still needs help).
The I’ll Buy Whatever I Need Candidate: the Mittster.
Least Likely to Succeed Even With Rove’s Help Candidate: Brownback. But, Brownback may think that Rove’s deep inside connections to the wackiest of the wackos in the religious right will help him achieve a groundswell in the primaries. Yeah, right.
M’self, I think either Giuliani or the Mittster have offered Rove a ton of money for his special skills. And, Bush may have made this concession as his only useful one for getting a Republican elected to the WH in `08. Otherwise, he’s poison, but he can always say he gave up his most trusted adviser for the good of the cause, even though Rove is only a phone call away in the meantime.
Rove’s not leaving because he’s being chased. He’s chasing someone.
montag @ 75
Well Elizabeth Cheney and Bill Frist have surrepticiously wandered over to Fred Thompson’s “non-campaign” Committee. Seems that Darth may have decided who he likes best.

Montag @75
Ah, if this is true, it is as I suspected. Rove has no intention of getting out of the game, contrary to previous reports. He’s going to work for someone soon. Let’s see which poor sonofabitch in the Republican ranks thinks Rove is going to do him some good….
————-
Doesn’t want to be working in the sunlight. My money is on general assignment to the RNC, shudder..
Rove outlasted Gonzo? Just what is Rove and Gonzo expected to tesitfy about when Congress comes back to session? What Republican Senators told Bush they can’t support the Whitehouse on which issue? What recently discovered fact surfaced? Has the trip home to voters freaked the GOP Senators out that much?
This looks like it could be the netroots biggest victory I though for sure we would have to take out Gonzo first!
SunnyNobility @ 80
Umm, doesn’t sound like Rove. He’s always been the operator, not the operatee, albeit always behind the scenes. Anything’s possible, though.
Here is the WSJ news article on Rove’s departure:
http://online.wsj.com/article/…..whats_news
And here is the editorial:
http://online.wsj.com/article/…..whats_news
cinnamonape @ 79
Knew about E. Cheney, didn’t know about Frist.
Yeah, Thompson is chump enough to want Rove in, and malleable enough for Rove to think he’s got a chance, but I have a feeling that Jeri and Rove might come to blows. I think anyone running Thompson’s campaign would come to blows with Ms. 1983 Trailer Trash of the Greater South.
What issue could force Rove to resign is there new evidence we don’t know about a new witness perhaps?
Or maybe the Supremes have told Bush they can’t back his claims about Executive Priviledge because that would be giving the next Democratic President the power to ignore any future Republican investigations. The Supremes have to think long term.
If this theory is true then the White House will quietly drop their Executive Priviledge Claims when witnesses testify. Though I still expect the witnesses to lie.
But we should be seeing some actual charges brought up if I’m right because nothing else would force Rove to retire he likes power to much.
Unless of course his health or marriage is really in a lot of trouble. Or Bush really might have anointed a succesor and sent Rove to help him.
I’m hoping myself for indictments!
things come undone @ 85
Don’t count on it if you’re easily disappointed.
Rove can’t do much more for Bush right now. Virtually everything except getting Bush in office in 2000 and 2004 has crashed and burned, as far as the general public is concerned.
Rove, I think, has gotten a big, big offer, one he can’t refuse, and he’s egotistical enough to think that he’s a kingmaker. This is all strictly election business, to my mind.
WTF!!!! Rove bails?
Rove does have Hilary or worst negatives if he offically works for any campaign he risks dragging them down.
I’m betting he works unoffically, we must mention any GOP candidate who takes Rove’s advice as the Karl Rove candidate we need to smear them with Rove and the Bush legacy/low approval numbers.
We need to link a GOP loss of the Presidency to George Bush and Karl Rove. We need to discredit their policies!
Funny, one would think that the absolute height of Rove’s career would be taking a ne’er-do-well pathological drunk with name recognition and making him president, that such would be something he just couldn’t top, no matter what.
But, he’s also an ideological freak, with the necessary creds in GOPland, and, likely, now thinks he can do it for anyone, if the fees are high enough.
Let’s hope that hubris exacts its price on him and his chosen chariot.
montag @ 86
Or maybe he’s packing his bags for Paraguay.
Lemming @ 71
Let the silence deafen.
Montag @ 86 I can still hope for the best.
Besides while everthing you say may be true people are still going to wonder why Rove really left. The Right Wing blogs are going to have a hard time spinning this as good news.
In the absense of trust rumor fills the void. In crises bad news always has a ready audience.
The climate of fear mongering spread by now revealed lies about Weapons of Mass Destruction and the reasons for going to war created by Rove ensure that rummors of bad news will be believed.
Everyone will be looking for a coverup or indictments.
things come undone @ 92
Just as they were during the time leading up to Libby’s indictment.
As I say, don’t count on it if you’re easily disappointed.
What did the article on the interview have to say about reasons? Rove says he’s doing it “for his family.” Translation: huge amounts of money.
montag @ 82
I’m thinking in terms of running their dark side (ops & voting mechanics), then reaping the rewards, wherever they might be found.
Present job is probably wearisome, and dealing w/Fielding and preznet now is probably worse than we can imagine.
But, the guy is up for a challenge, so maybe he has picked his man. If so, guess I’d go for Fred… He’s a blank, ready to be crafted. Or Rudy is paying him a fortune to clean up his history.. I don’t see Mitt, unless he was going really sub-rosa. Taint of Rove might seem contagious.
Breaking news: Karl Rove is going to resign August 31, according to the WSJ.
Lead in WSJ Online:
Karl Rove, President Bush’s longtime political adviser, is resigning as White House deputy chief of staff effective Aug. 31, and returning to Texas, he said in an interview with Paul Gigot, editor of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page. (See related editorial.)
SunnyNobility @ 94
But, Rove’s roots in Utah go way, way back. College Republicans at Univ. of Utah, help with Bennett’s campaign, etc. Might be a hidden connection there, and Mitt’s in the best position to pay. And payment figures in. Notice that Rove didn’t say he was giving up to spend more time with family, the usual excuse when one is being chased out. He said he was doing it for his family….
John Palcewski @ 95
Definitely one of those WTF moments. Are the thugs sending him to the underground bunker to get “teh maths” right for a sure steal of the ‘08 elections?
Waccamaw @ 97
MSNBC is just reporting it now. You’re right, WTF moment, I could’nt believe my ears. I had to hear it a second time to beleive it. Rove decided to jump from the trainwreck. Probably to avoid making the Bush Administration look any worse ignoring all the subpoenas. Trouble is Rove is still breathing so he is still just as dangerous.
Montag @96

I didn’t know about the Utah connections.. that’s persuasive. Plus he gets access to the incredible resources of the LDS. Mitt creeps me out, those eeeyes!
Donning tin foil, if something really bad were to come down, LDS is a serious survivalist, stockpiled and wired bunch.
What are you people still doing up? I haven’t even made coffee yet!
Lindy @ 100
Rove Resigned! I don’t know if should perform an exorism at the White House to keep him out or just throw a party!
SunnyNobility @ 99
Ted Bundy time, eh? :)
Now, here’s another bit to throw into the spin dryer. Newtie hasn’t declared yet. Was he waiting for a deal to be firmed up? He’s done his mea culpas with James Dodson (at whose bidding?), and is right with the tighty-whiteys, so far.
If you want to imagine real election evil, just imagine Rove as the caboose on the Gingrich train….
I don’t know many in the south who would vote for newt, Rove notwithstanding. They all know what an absolute scum bag he is.
montag @ 102
Great. Thanks for the upcoming nightmares, Montag. ;-)
Lindy @ 103
Ah, but in the South, he’s their kind of scumbag. And, he’s marginally smarter than most of the voters in the South. That impresses them. Hell, Newtie’s base was the South for a long, long time. May still be, if he can convince them, with the help of the Dobsons, et al, that’s he’s born again in the Lord.
And, that’s Rove’s speciality–selling scumbags to the religious right.
jacqrat @ 104
Aw, shit, sorry. I guess that’s why Ambi*n is so popular. :)

Always seemed Newt left too quick and easy- keeping his powder dry. Given the current array, his nicely aged transgressions start taking on the patina of the proverbial frat pranks. If Dobson is prepared to back him, what good christian couldn’t follow. But the
aesthetics!!! The two most unattractive men in the entire party.
Good Morning Pups. Happy Monday. It’s been reported that Karl Rove will resign as of August 31.
montag @ 105
gee, thanks montag.
I’m wondering if Senator Arlen Spector has decided to support a finding of contempt of Congress unless Gonzo spills the beans which could implicate Rove. Arlen defecting could provide cover for other Republican Senators to defect from the White House on this issue.
SunnyNobility @ 107
Well, in the current crop of hopefuls, yes, very likely.
Still, for downright ugly, I’d go with Denny the Hutt and “Tex” Sensenbrenner.
Good morning from Georgia! Anything interesting going on? (((((((whistling Dixie}}}}}}
Rove says in the WSJ article Hillary is “fatally flawed” that sounds pretty creepy. Does he mean she is going to die or he knows/is conspiring to do her in? Can’t wait for the comback from the Clinton campaign. Is that any way to talk about a former first lady Mr. Rove?
Montag @102
If you want to imagine real election evil, just imagine Rove as the caboose on the Gingrich train….

The execrable Sen Saxby Chambliss of GA is also up, wonder if they’d produce synergy..
things come undone @ 110
Arlen, defect? Hahahahahaha. You’re ready for stand-up. :)
montag @ 62
Nobody’s really examined all the stuff that Kerik has been involved in, particularly what he was doing in Bagdad when he had the contract to train Iraqi police. And there’s only been one story that I know of (in Salon) about Rudy’s relationship with the pedophile priest and why he is still on Rudy’s company payroll. So there’s lots more dirty laundry to be aired.
SunnyNobility @ 113
Scary thought. Now you’ve got me worried. :)
raven @ 112
Yesterday Scarecrow asked what the news headline would be today. Rove’s name wasn’t mentioned. Somethings going on though because with this administration there is always the printed story and then there’s the truth. Hopefully Marion makes something special for breakfast.
On that happy Rove news, I’m going to bed. I have no idea why I’m up this late, but whatever.
Cheney has been keeping Iran on the front burner. Everything I’ve read says there has been a counterweight within the White House opposing the attack of Iran.
Was Rove the counterweight, and did he lose?
JPL @ 117
Nothing on the editorial page at the Times site. I understand the Times Select is going away and t will all be free again.
1970cs @ 119
More likely Rice. Rove is completely amoral, and would do anything to help the `pugs win 2008. This is about money and 2008 politics, not current battles, I think.
montag @ 121
I hope you’re right.
Morning. Rove announces for the full news cycle. Bright, shiny object.
What’s not under WH
control? Markets, housing, living wage jobs – check the econ forecasts.
Also, Balad is fully ramped up for long term US AIR FORCE presence – new, big, shiny PERMANENT military hospital staffed with both USAF and Army medical teams. Iran, anyone?
Fuckery is afoot. Happy Monday.

Hi Waccamaw! That was my first reaction – going to the RNC to work his magic and then team up with whoever is most promising. Of course, while at the RNC he could also address some of those pesky e-mail problems.

Amen to that. I’ve been watching him since the early 80’s and neither have I.
Good morning, pups. The NYT has Cohen, Kristof and Krugman this morning. Cohen writes about the latest attempt to involve the UN in Iraq and has a cautionary tale about India, Kristof says we should look at how the Soviet Union left Afghanistan and do exactly the opposite when we leave Iraq, and Krugman, after being told that Romney’s kid was serving the country by helping on daddy’s campaign, wonders if we’re about to elect another Narcissist in Chief.

Coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. Time for me to get in the shower before I head out to get baked again, with temps scheduled to hover around 100. Have a good Monday.
I don’t think rove is going to team up with anyone
I think the repukelicans are pretty fed up with rove, it’s because of rove they lost their majority, their power, their standing among Americans, their permanent majority
unless they’re morons (well, they are but that’s not my point), the know with no doubt rove is the reason they might not get re elected
the only person that might engage rove is a person that has no shot otherwise who believes rove gives them some hope
in other words, another bush
in any event, this is what I believe is happening;
gas prices are WAY down which only happens when the president has to offset bad news, rove is getting resigned
I do believe a big wet wad of diarea is about to hit the fan and they are all in preperation
imagine if the wad hit the fan and rove was forced out by the story?
that wouldn’t play so he’s getting out now and it MIGHT look like he left on his own
Morning, Marion!

Frequently “taking time for family problems” is Repuglican code for some sex-related scandal about to break. I recall that this was the reason that Ted Haggard, Mark Foley, and that Young Republican leader all used to “explain” their resignations.
It’s used like Rockstars and Models use “hospitalized for exhaustion” as code for “drug abuse treatment”.
perris @ 128
Okay, what prompts those assessments?
First, Bush is the asshole here. Ask the public what they think of Rove, and most of them go, “who?”
Second, a good many of the Republicans in the race are morons, so how does that change the mix?
Third, what manner of big, wet wad of diarrhea hits the fan here? Email irregularities? No one in the general public cares or has noticed. Rove fucking chickens on the Truman balcony at high noon? Same-same. Lying to everyone and anyone about misuse of his office and encouraging Hatch Act violations? Eventually, Waxman will get around to that, but with not much effect.
More facts are necessary before one can say that Rove is exiting stage right before the hook comes out.
N=1 @ 123
With this crew fuckery is always afoot. In this instance there is no doubt that they want something to float under the radar but I doubt that a war with Iran would fit that criteria. More I think they are still scared shitless that the USAG trickery will have some unfortunate news for them this week. I am betting that the pols, on their summer VK, will have already heard an earful from the citizenry and a few wafflers from the gooper side will have indicated to bushco that they can not defend them any longer.
cinnamonape @ 130
Note that he didn’t say “to spend more time with his family,” but, rather, “for” his family. That, to me, translates to cash for services. :)

I always knew he was/is a whore
Christy! Your state is in the Muck. It’s a very interesting read.

I am speculating…no facts for this speculation, just the events that are transpiring
main event;
rove is going to resign or being resigned
imho, this is not going to happen voluntarily, in my opinion there is something about to come out that will force his resignation and he’s doing it now so it looks voluntary
rove is leaving a failure right, he’s not going to turn the presidents legacy around, if that miracle happens it will look like it happened because rove left
I think something big is gonna come down and rove will be the architech
maybe his reporter is going public with why he was invited to the whitehouse so many times?
I don’t know what it will be but I do believe it will be embarrasing for him and the president
Rove is resigning! Really he is, I thought that was a joke upthread!
Good morning!
perris @ 136
Nothing in the events themselves makes the speculation worthwhile, I’m afraid. The lefties see Rove as the root of all evil (and not for specious reasons), but his leaving this White House doesn’t mean he’s not available to counsel Bush when the dauphin finds himself utterly confused. It just means that Rove has latched onto a big contract.
Occam’s Razor applies here. If Bush is basically fucked for the next sixteen months (and he is), what good is Rove? Bush gets to say he gave Rove up for the good of the party, and Rove gets to make a bundle.
Hoping for some dramatic expose’ related to Rove’s departure is not the simplest explanation, given the available facts.
The Mark of Rove

Anyone read the new Atlantic cover story, Lessons of a Failed Presidency: Why Karl Rove Couldn’t Deliver? We knew about the arrogance, but the details are worth the read. Basically, they pissed off their Republican allies in Congress.
When a Dem becomes Prez, they should listen in on every Rove phone call, read every email, and tail him everywhere he goes. He is a treasoner, and a threat to the Constitution – a terrorist if you will.
Immediately after getting the neccessary info, which should take about two days, then immediately restore the Constitution and get rid of all these horrific Big Brother law changes Shrub, Cheney, Rove, EVERY Repube, and several “Dems” have enacted.
montaq, in your scenario rove is diserting bush like a rat, bush refused to desert rove even though he guaranteed to the public he would fire anyone involved with exposing our covert assets
not gonna play
I do believe this is bigger then you think montaq, in my opinion there is nothing that precipitates a voluntary resignation, nothing…I think he’s being forced out
time will tell…maybe you’re right, I doubt it

you know, this is really a great point, the entire administration will have nowhere to hide, what will they do since a democrat will ahve absolute access to all their correspondance?
I never even thought of this from that perspective…reputation points are awarded to binkers for the insight.
perris @ 128
If you’re right, they’ll leak it promptly. Does look like the sub-prime thing has spun out of control, but that’s not Rove. My sense is Fred Fielding is the only one who could make the preznit fire Rove… Gonna be kind of lonely in that big ole white house.
Just switched to Washington Journal to see what the callers are having to say about departure of the “brain”.

I’m starting to get the giggles from the R calls.
MSNBC: Rove to resign at end of August. Story leaked to WSJ at 4 a.m. according to Matthews.
Who’s he going to work for?
Or…who’s got the subpoenas?
Has he done any grand jury testimony lately?

ya gotta love the wsj…check out their lead;
any real journalist would have written;
” These are the days of Republican doubt, with President Bush responsible for a devastating war that’s tearing our country apart…
now that would be the lead in my world
Morning All. WHOA, I jumped out of bed this morning, jolted by the news. Can I speculate? I said months ago that Rove would be the one to flip. He’s committed so many election law crimes and Hatch Act violations (and who knows what else) that he could face years in jail. And he’s too far up the food chain to get off lightly. It’s either spill your guts or go to jail. This is speculation, of course, but something stinks here.
solai @ 158
I think he’s imune from prosecution
the president is too brazen, he’s gonna pardon anyone that gets into trouble and claim the entire affair is a democratic witch hunt
I would WAG that Karl’s skill set(ratfucking and general dirty tricks)is something the RNC is gonna need for Nov 2008.
I’ve read more than a few times that Republicans in this day and age can only win most elections IF they can figure out ways to supress Dem voter turnout. This sort of thing is where the term “rovian”comes from. It’s what he does. Go back and look at some of the things Molly Ivins had to say about Karl, look at the man’s history as an operative.
Those things could also work in a presidential campaign, but my spidey senses say RNC for some reason.
True about Uncle Ronnie and “Thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican,” and of course Gingrich kept them in line; but now they seem to be reverting to type. They’re knifing one another in the back, but with all the viciousness with which they have for the last decade and more knife the Democrats, who simply smiled and took it.
So we can cheer the Republicans, sit back, and eat wholesome multigrain chip lites while applauding the entertainment. Only–have the Dems learned any lessons in the meantime about standing up to the Republicans? And about providing a visionary leadership that will deal with the ills that Dubya has visited on the US?
Hm. May be far too early to break out the chips, after all.
