The Hatch harvest is in and it’s a green chile weekend at Chez Doodle. Scrambled in the cheesy eggs this morning, mmmmmmm yummy! Potato and green chile gratin with the ribeyes later tonight. And I just made the most incredible Cream of Poblano Soup (and found a new recipe website, to boot). I substituted with sour cream and didn’t bother with the tortilla chips and cheese in the oven part.

Eating well is the best revenge!!

Just a word on savings for college–you might be unhappily surprised when you find out parent savings lessen the amount of financial aid their children can receive. That is a penalty for your hard work and thrift. Also, students who work hard and save are penalized at about 50 percent of their savings on any Pell grant they might qualify for. Lastly, for any thinking of the military route to fund college, guess what? your military earnings also subtract from your Pell.

Yes you can work and save ahead for college costs, but look around for creative ways to do so that will not count against you. Some states have plans that pay in (match) a certain amount for each dollar you save for college. If your state doesnt have such an option, think about a paper sack of cash under the mattress. I am not kidding.

That Village Voice article should end Rudy’s campaign.

Interesting, Garance’s reporting on the straw poll of the straw poll:

Because a straw poll itself is not an informal enough assessment of public opinion, the group Everyday America is holding an “Unofficial Straw Poll” just outside the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, feauring “results every hour,” based on the opinions of those who visit their table.
As of 2:30 pm, the results were:

Huckabee 36 %
Tancredo 27%
Paul 13%
Romney 11%
T. Thompson 10%
Brownback 8%
Cox <1%
R. Smith <1%
Hunter <1%

Six questions for John Conyers ob Impeachmernt & Alberto Gonzales, from Harper’s

1. If President Bush wants Attorney General Gonzales to remain on the job and the Senate’s vote of No Confidence doesn’t produce his resignation, will the Judiciary Committee seek to impeach him?

2. When Monica Goodling testified, she was asked a single question about her dealings with Karl Rove and Harriet Miers, and she gave a brush off answer. Does the committee plan to follow up on this angle? Does the congressman believe that Rove and/or Miers are important figures in this story?

3. Is President Bush (and/or Vice President Cheney) guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors in regard to leading the country into the war in Iraq?

4. Polls show that impeachment of President Bush is supported by a notable section of the public. Why isn’t impeachment on the table? Have the Democrats decided for political reasons that impeachment should not be pursued? Was the congressman pressured by the party leadership to steer clear of the topic, as has been reported?

5. Some watchdog groups criticized the congressman for opposing a measure in the ethics bill that would have extended the revolving door ban to two years? Why did the congressman oppose that step –especially at a time that the public appears to be so cynical about political corruption and supportive of stricter ethics rules?

6. The congressman has announced that he will hold hearings on climbing gasoline prices. What’s the biggest factor behind the rise in prices?
