via Atrios, there’s a really detailed description in the NYT of what’s going on in the financial markets. I can’t vouch for its accuracy, and probably will read it tomorrow, but anyone who wants some info on what’s happening should take a peek.

A few generations ago, savers responded to financial panics with runs on banks, and even healthy institutions could fail if they could not raise enough cash quickly enough.

For a long time, that all seemed to be safely relegated to the past. But now the runs are back — and this time the targets are not banks but the securities that have replaced them as the prime generators of credit in the new financial system.

“Our current system of levered finance and its related structures may be critically flawed,” said William H. Gross, the chief investment officer of Pimco, a mutual fund company. “Nothing within it allows for the hedging of liquidity risk, and that is the problem at the moment.”

As far as I know China is upgrading its navy. Upgrading the military is something countries do constantly, not the least of which is Israel. Maybe I am a little testy tonight on the subject of China, but they do have a right. I agree with the words of one Main land official who said on the subject: “shut up Americans . . .” Any “moral” stand on the subject is regarded is hypcrisy these days, not the least of which China is protective of its sovreignty and you can quite imagine they feel a little testy these days . . . with the Chimpenfuhrer playing cowboy.

IMHO, China is in a lose lose situation much like Japan was before the second world war. Before I go any further, let me make clear that I believe our entry into WWII was right and inevitable. Having said that, we did a lot to set Japan up for that situation because of their intervention in Manchuria allowed some fools in congress to embargo them on metals and oil as punishment (like we are trying to do to Iran…) This drove them to try and get supplies of both that couldn’t be cut off, and that gave the militarists power to do the war bit.

China is unbelievably vulnerable right now, and their leadership knows it. (full disclosure, I did a minor in ancient chinese history in college a LOOOOOONG time ago…). First, many chinese think the “peasant emperors” (the communists) are an “interim” dynasty and fully expectg the Quing dynasty to be restored via the Guomindong on Taiwan. Many would cooperate with it because of the advantage it might bring. THAT is one reason the chinese mainland govt gets twitchy about Taiwan, they know in the eyes of many chinese they aren’t a legit or long lasting government. Also, many provinces with heavy foreign investment and high percentages of wealthy non-aparatchiks want out of the party domination, which sucks most of their profit into the militarisation and home-industry schemes (china wants to be able to maintian a 2000 level economy by 2020 with no outside purchases at all, including oil and food as well as technology.) And remember that while a few chinese are getting very rich and the govt is spending money like a drunken sailor, the average chinese is little better off at best. And with the internet, more and more of them are realizing it. that’s why chins is deadly afraid of things like yahoo and facebook and wikipedia and google. their people are more than capable of another revolution and if they figure out how they’re getting screwed, they might well do it.

And that’s the reason for the big military right now. Not for foreign adventurism, but to fight off the outside powers who might attempt to intervene to help support the breakup of the country into easily controllable provincial elements like happened to the former yugoslavia but on a much larger scale. (And check out the Boxer Rebellion on wiki if you’d like to see how this was done prior to WW I.)

Bottom line, the Chinese are tapdancing on a nanowire above a cauldron of molten lava. And they know it. Let’s not jiggle their elbow.

Bought a Canadian one from a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force on eBay, and left that at a girlfriend’s house before she gave me my walking papers. Years later, I thought, well, I have a little extra money, so I went online and found a shop in Nashville that had a new Martin on sale, the D-16/12, a twelve-string with an all-mahogany body. Bought it.

Very different from the earlier bodies with spruce tops and mahogany sides. Much mellower and diminished sound, although it’s supposed to based on a jumbo design. I really have to pound on it to get some bass out of it, unlike the D20-12.

The D-28 is a classic, and a beautiful jumbo with great depth and projection. If I were wealthy, I’d buy one. :)

Yeah, all true. I guess it’s about how much work it is to get some projection out of the all-mahogany box. There’s some sort of dampening going on. It’s not as bright, even with the same strings, as the early Martins. But, I’m still hopeful that it will do a nice, subdued blues version of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” with my arthritic fingers. :)

When I was in Hawaii, there was an extravaganza show at the Honolulu Civic Center (the big, big venue at the time), starting with John Sebastian, doing a few songs, and then, the lights dimmed to complete dark, and, a few moments later, when the lights came up, there was Donovan, sitting cross-legged, deeply imbedded in a nest of hibiscus flowers, playing “Young Girl Blues.”

And he was the opening act for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

A fine night.

Ah, well, sometimes memory must suffice in the absence of technology.

It was a great place and time for rock `n roll. Jefferson Airplane came to play a few months later, and there were people lined up around the block waiting for standing-only tickets who couldn’t get in, so JA arranged another concert in a public park for free for the people who couldn’t get in to the ticketed show.

Three weeks before I arrived in Hawaii, Jimi Hendrix was there, and played in jungle boots for all the soldiers, and two weeks after I left, the Moody Blues were there, doing a kick-ass show, from the accounts I got afterwards.

When I asked someone in the music biz why Hawaii got such good shows, he said, “it’s a great place to vacation after a tour. A great place to unwind.”

He was right. :)

Bush would be crippled politicaly by his own base’s stupidity, Gosh I love Irony.
So if Bush can’t find the money for children’s healthcare in the fall I hope the Democrats have the spine to say then we can’t afford your war Mr President!
