We have a treat for everyone for tomorrow’s Blue America candidate chat, scheduled for 2:00 pm ET/11:00 am PT. Rick Noriega will be here — he’s a candidate for Senate in Texas, and he is running against the odious John “Box Turtle” Cornyn.
Rick Noriega is fantastic — Howie has some background here — but don’t just take our word for it. Take a peek at what one of the top hispanic Republicans in the state of Texas has to say: (H/T to OffTheKuff)
Villarreal added that Noriega had made sure that Hispanic and minority-owned businesses “got a fair shake” at the Port of Houston, the City of Houston, and the state of Texas.
“He has leveled the playing fields for business. I can only support somebody who has got that kind of vision for a position like that,” Villarreal said.
Asked if he could see himself forming a ‘Republicans for Rick Noriega’ group, Villarreal replied: “Done. I’m doing it.” He said he had recruited a lot of people to the Noriega camp. “A lot of them, Republican Hispanic leaders, not just grassroots folks,” he said.
If he does run for U.S. Senate, Noriega could face San Antonio attorney Mikal Watts in the Democratic primary. Asked who he would support if Noriega did not make it out of the primary, Villarreal said he was not sure.
“I am not sure if I will support the other nominee. But I still won’t vote for Cornyn. I may just leave that box unchecked,” he said.
Yep, that nasty, racially-tinged rhetoric on immigration sure was helpful for the GOP, wasn’t it Karl?
Please stop by on Saturday at 2:00 pm ET/11:00 am PT and chat live with Rick Noriega, the next Senator from the state of Texas, if we have anything to do with it. And do read Howie’s write-up. If you can’t make it on Saturday, Howie has already added Rick to our Blue America page, and I’m certain he’d appreciate a donation if you have something to spare. More progressives in the House and Senate, please — and fewer folks who vote the wrong way all around. One election at a time…brought to you by Blue America.
(Why yes, that is an eastern box turtle. Why do you ask?)

Christy!
let’s replace the pugs and then start in on the blue dogs…
dos…
OC at 3 — We are hoping to do both simultaneously. Believe me, Howie is crunching a whole lot of numbers at the moment…
Rats! I’ll be out of town. Morning, Christy!
Oh, goodie!!
Christy, could you ask Howie what the procedure is for having him “vet” candidates? I mentioned “my guy,” Andrew Duck, who’s running again to unseat Neanderthal and batshit-crazy Roscoe Bartlett in MD-06. I think the pups would like to meet him, and he deserves support.
mauimom at 7 — Have you e-mailed Howie about him? That’s a good place to start…
While I’m not usually in favor of a race-agenda representative, I feel Noriega would be great because Mexican-Americans should have more representation in the USA.
I was watching a documentary on the first decade of the 20th century. During this time, 1/3 of the people in major American cities were born out of the country. Historians reflect that the incoming immigrant populations had been an extremely important part of our vitality.
More Irish in NYC than in Dublin. More Poles in Chicago than in Warsaw.

Address?
HowieKlein at aol dot com will reach Howie.
Howie identifies target districts and then interviews our potential candidates. He also
talks to local roots folks to get their opinion.
And I’m sure he’d like to hear about yours.

Geez, I run out for some coffee and what do y’all do?

When the bluedogs rejected Nancy Boyda, they signalled (to me at least) that they had made a serious miscalculation in their self-definition.
They think their victories came from the right, but they really came from the center.
I will agree, a very few of them might fit their own misguided model, but they are the exception to the rule.
And if they do not begin to realize the real source of their electability and their obligations, they will see themselves in the very position their adversaries were when the center, not the wingnut wing of the Democratic Party, took back those seats.
It won’t be long, and the real progressives the bluedogs will face, will make themselves known, and the proof of what I say will begin to show more clearly.
But there is no doubt, the bluedogs made a tactical error in assuming their vote came from Bush’s base, and unless they recognize and change their ways soon, the electorate is going to make an historic example out of them.
I don’t nknow much yet about Rick Noriega, but this opportunity has changed that, thanks FDL for another great lesson.
After yesterday’s news that Oklahoma State Senator Andrew Rice is mounting a campaign against Inhoffe, it is beginning to look like some of our worst uber-reds are finbally facing accountability at the ballot box.
Isn’t it ironic, we now call the Republican “Reds?”
A twist of fate that no man could manipulate, it is truly a study in word-framing.
OldCoastie @ 3
We need to go after both, but we have to be careful we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot with the dogs.
BTW: I think it will be awesome if we can give Cornyn a run for his money. I’ve seen this seat as a very long shot but if there is a good race it will force a lot of resources to it that they probably don’t think they have to spend at this point.
realworld at 15 — That is exactly the point. And the good news is that a lot of folks in TX on both sides of the aisle are disgusted with Cornyn…
Here’s a personal example of what’s wrong with our political system (okay, one of many things).
I was incredibly frustrated with our state legislature in 2006 over a number of serious state-wide issues and then I found out my rubber-stamp state rep was going to run unopposed.
So with no political experience whatsoever, I decided to run against him.
Of course I lost, being in one of the most “red” districts in the state and maybe event the country.
But I essentially did everything myself. I was my own campaign manager, treasurer, webmaster etc.
Yesterday I got a letter in the mail from the state election board saying that I’m being fined $1000 because I turned in my final campaign finance report late.
Right after the election I found out I was going to lose my job and spent the next couple of months scrambling to find another job.
I found a good job, and happened to start on the very day my final campaign finance report was due, and I just dropped the ball on it in all the turmoil around leaving one job and starting another.
Now I owe the state $1000 that there is no way I can come up with in the next 28 days.
It’s no wonder ordinary people don’t run for office more often.
Of all the candidates who do so much shady crap with their campaign finances and get off scott free, I get hit with a big fine when I didn’t do anything wrong, I just filed paperwork late.
It’s so frustrating.
A twist of fate that no man could manipulate, it is truly a study in word-framing.
quite bizarre too that some states are thinking of assigning green license plates to sexual offenders. Green?
Howie’s post also mentions OK State Senator Andrew Rice, who announced this week he will be taking on the despicable Inhofe (R-Global warming denier) in the 2008 Senate race. Please check it out.
SufiLizard @ 16
Can you appeal it?
Hey FDL, Thanks I didn’t know Noriega was running thanks you mean there is a chance Texas will get some REAL representation and not Lock step and I vote party line and what I am TOLD to vote BS like the present TURD in the Senate.
I keep telling people that TEXAS has NO representation in the Senate or the Congress.
I have been told falt out by Coryn that he will vote ONLY party line and what he IS TOLD to vote.
The other Senator never ever ans her phone either in Washington or San Antonio, again the story from her aides is the same I vote the Party line and I vote what I ma told to VOTE.
I am hoping that there will be many more Repub’s getting challenged.
With the Dems out pacing the Pub’s in money already, they are going to have to pick which races they want to pour money into very carefully.
Someone is going to feel the pinch and I hope there is a progressive there to pounce.
Every race is going to be important this time around. Every one.
Cornyn’s JAR here sucks!
He’s beatable ; )
So that would include every Vermonter. Green Mountain State.
Sufi at 16,
We need to do a better job of organizing support teams for progressives running for office. Wouldn’t it have been great to turn to a friend or volunteer the next to the last day with a box full of paperwork and say, this has to be a report going out by fedex tomorrow, can you help me?
I don’t think we should ask to be exempt from campaign reporting. We are the kind of people who want there to be regulations and campaign reporting. The fact that these regs aren’t uniformly enforced against the wingers doesn’t relieve us of our obligations. We still have to do the right thing, even when others don’t.
How about Hatch? When is he due for reelection?
Given that I have Box Turtle, The Cheerleader, and the execrable Lamah Smith as my elected “representatives” in DeeCee, it would be nice to have someone who actually reflects some of my views. To have someone from Blue America as the choice would be finest kind.
Anybody watching c-span streaming live?
There we go. Bypassing Congress again:
Bush did say yesterday that all Congress is now doing is investigating instead of legislating.

To a Democratic judge?
Apparently, another mining accident, with reportedly 3 dead, in Princeton, Indiana. Very hush, hush – police won’t really comment except to confirm something has happened(MSNBC). Not showing up on google.
I know this is off topic but now that Bill Kristol, Fred Kagan and Kim Kagan have been given the dog and pony show is it safe to say the “pre-September Petraeus report” propaganda campaign is in full swing?
This is great stuff. Howie is doing amazing work.
it’s important for everyone to keep their eye on the ball: knock out the R’s every chance we get, and then work on the leadership and makeup of the Democratic party.
It’s the Republicans that are destroying the country.
From Princeton Indiana Newspaper
The Gibson County Coroner was dispatched to the scene of some type of incident at Gibson County Coal’s air shaft construction site north of the Ind. 64/65 junction northwest of Princeton shortly before 11 a.m. Friday. No further details were immediately available about the nature of the incident or the numer of injuries or fatalities.

egregious @ 25
I agree we shouldn’t be exempt. My point is that there is little support for people like me. I ran as a Democrat, but the state party was of little help and our county party is not real “together.”
I also feel that the fine is pretty excessive. In the entire campaign I only raised around $3,000 and spent almost all of it.
And like I said, it’s not like anything improper turned up in my finances. I was just late filing the paperwork.
Conscience at 19. I can try to appeal, but I’m not sure what luck I’ll have when our secretary of state is a Republican operative who has been pushing efforts to reduce voter turnout.
I’ll have to appeal, because my only other option is to send in $1000 within 30 days of receiving the letter — and that can’t happen.
I’d be happy to turn over the couple hundred dollars still in my campaign account — the only reason I didn’t roll it over into the county party was because I knew I had turned in my final paperwork late and there could be fines.

Yup! Per my comment yesterday:
More of Rover’s Remedial Rithmetic coming Right Up.
I can’t wait until we start allowing testimony from young girls in the Salem Mass. area in which they are taken into court and begin to writhe on the floor, foam at the mouth and accuse the defendent of being a terrorist.
The Bush Kangaroo Judge will then have proof and can send the guilty to the gallows or Guantanimo where they can be sodomized by fine Americans fighting against the evil terrorists who would ruin our centuries old way of life as embodied in our Constitution.

Meanwhile, Murray is insisting the cause of the Utah mine collapse was a magnitude-3.9 earthquake. People don’t even notice that small of an earthquake. I bet my cardcastle to outstand a 3.9 earthqake. If that’s the case, how can a mine be so unstable?

Blue Texas? It can be done. Who would have thought we in Oklahoma would have elected a Democratic guv and a Demo Lt. Governor?
LS @ 31
I was watching MSNBC when this came across. I dug up a bit about the company. There was another fatal accident there in November of 2001.
In fairness to the police liason – public information officer, he did tell Kyra on CNN that he has been on the phone with news agencies for the past 40 minutes and hadn’t talked to “officials at the mine.”
radiofreewill @ 39
The figure is at least $35 billion. There was a second deal for $16 billion. In theory, the Fed will get this money back, but it allows banks to spread their losses over a longer period rather than having to eat them all at once and so eases pressure on the short term lending rate.
I’ve put up a fresh links thread for anyone who wants it. A few laughs — felt like we could all use some today — along with some news and other bits and pieces…
Box Turtle! Whatever did such an elegant animal do to be slapped with a likeness to Cornyn?!
Slug? Sowbug maybe, but even they are… oh well… you guys know all this….
carry on…
oops. forgot to tell y’all there’s a new thread. this one is so small, though.
I don’t know, Hugh, the article at TNH makes it look more like a ‘trade-in your bad paper for face value in gold and hang it on the peasants’ to me.

“The Fed accepted only mortgage-backed debt as collateral for this morning’s weekend repurchase agreement. Losses in U.S. subprime mortgage investments have been rippling through global credit markets, driving interest rates higher and sinking share prices. The Fed also added $24 billion yesterday, the most since April, as demand for cash increased.”
Nevada has come close to going blue but almost isn’t good enough. There are lots of hard working Democrats out there pounding the pavements, running workshops, volunteering for phone-bank duty at the local Democratic office. They organize their communities and have monthly coffee meetings to discuss issues and processes.
Do I think we will go blue this time? No. Close, maybe. Some candidates repeatedly insert independent to describe their position to put some distance between them and the Democrats though they are on the Democratic ticket. This really gets my attention. What is going on here? Do they feel embarrassed or disillusioned with Democrats? I can’t get an answer out of loyal volunteers. They don’t seem to want to pursue the subject.
It is the north part of the state that throws the election to the Republicans. They do it every election. I am stumped as to how to change the outcome this election. Keep in mind, many of these citizens still pride themselves in being “Mississippi of the West”.
Neo-cons such as Friedman and Kristol always need another FU of time to win the war. And, we also are told, it has IMPROVED so much since a FU ago, which proves the Surge is a Success. Except six months ago we were not told Baghdad “was a no go zone”.
_________________
Parts of Baghdad which are mixed, or more complicated to deal with, but even there, we walked around Haifa Street, now we walked around in body armor, and it was, you know, it wasn’t the most peaceful, and there were threatening things there. But we walked around Haifa Street. Six months ago, that was a no-go zone.
A texas article with Watts in it: Local attorneys file suit against AT&T
“In this country, we have a right to privacy. One branch of the government, whether it be the executive branch or any of the other branches, doesn’t have the right to pretend a law does not exist, and apparently that’s what has happened here,” Watts said.
realworld @ 15
Due respect, we’re not doing this to give Cornyn a run for his money.
We’re doing it to have at least ONE U.S. Senator from Texas who doesn’t embarrass the state every time he opens his mouth.
Rick is good on women and family issues, on GLBT issues, and has strong security bona fides.
This is a contested primary, against a self-funder, Mikal Watts, who seems to mostly attract supporters who go “but he won’t have to worry about money”. Watts would be an improvement over Cornyn, or Senator 99 as I’m calling him, but the fact is we don’t have to settle for better.
We can have the best, and that is people powered Rick Noriega.
Texas Bloggers have a goal of 800 small dollar donors by 9/30. If y’all have a few bucks to send our way, it would really help.
Many thanks to Howie, and all the Blue America folks for the chance to show you there are a lot more Texans like Rick Noriega than like John Cornyn.
cancer_cures @ 38
The earthquake claim is a lie. The 3.9 seismic event was the mine collapse. There was no earthquake. Every seismologist who has looked at the data agrees.
Noriega is a dandy. Cornyn is such a clod. It would be absolutely delightful to have a competent Senator from Texas.
boadicea @ 56
Well, I gave him $25 and I I will be dancing the street if he wins. I just think it will be one hell of a fight but I don’t really know Texas politics that well. More power to you!
QuakerGirl @ 53
This is another state I think will be hard to turn but it is important we keep trying for lots of reasons. However, it is true that it will never be Blue if Democrats distance themselves from their own party. That is a sure recipe for failure.
realworld @ 59
Many thanks for your help.
It will definitely be a helluva fight, and there are no guarantees.
Actually just the one perennial political guarantee.
We can’t win if we don’t fight.
We. FIGHT.
Just ponied up on the Blue America site for Noriega. We fight.
My gf is from Austin, and we’ll be contributing together. Noriega just went on the list.
My favorite piece of news was yesterday on C-SPAN. Anthony Cordesman of Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) just return from Iraq and gave his analysis and report. It is on C-SPAN web site under Recent Programs. It was poignant, thoughtful and nonpolitical for such a volatile subject.
realworld @ 60
I live between California and Nevada but keep my drivers license and voting registration in Nevada. My vote really counts there. In California I bump into myself many times over :))
It’s important to be a presence. Sure, it would be easy to roll over and play dead in blood red Williamson county like the Republicans wish we would, but it’s important to let progressives and the disgusted know they aren’t alone.
Exactly, Texas Ellen.
Even in Williamson county, one of the legislative challengers, Karen Felthauser, came within 900 votes of an upset over incumbent Mike Krusee.
We have to keep pushing until the whole mess falls over. Then, we’ll need to grab a mop and bucket to clean it up.
Mr. Noriega actually came up to my wife and I in the bar on Wednesday night before Yearly Kos, and we talked for some length of time. As a native Texan, I retain an interest in Texas politics, and I came away from our conversation very impressed. I think he has a real chance to do well, even in an often-backward place like my home state!
Looking forward to the chat!
Hi Christy,
This is great news!
As a liberal in Texas, fighting John Cornyn, Rick Noriega is the man.
I sent many letters and emails to Cornyn and his coheart Hutchinson over the years and they all came back in a form letter. They all praised George Dubya’s war on Iraq.
It’s time for Rick Noriega to take charge and turn Texas and this country around!
Troubled Texan
Just sent $50 to Noriega. I spent my childhood in TX, in the days of “good” Dems. I wish him well.
I was lucky enough to be party of the Draft Noriega effort early on. Y’all Rick really is the real deal and I can’t tell you how much Texas Progressives appreciate the support!
Sincere thanks to those of you who’ve already added some cash to the kitty.
We aim to leave no safe place for Republicans to run to regroup.
Not even Texas.
cancer_cures @ 38
The mine used/uses an old outdated and dangerous mining technique where they remove roof support pillars (made of coal) as they retreat out of the mine to increase their profits many percentage points at the risk of a roof fall.
The Minneapolis bridge was constructed with outdated and dangerous designs long ago and before the Pt. Pleasant Silver Bridge collapse taught us all to make bridges more safety redundant.
The bridge was forgivable, but to continue mining in such a dangerous way makes little sense.
