Missed the debates (got back to discover that the girls had themselves a time while I was in Chicago) and would like to know what Obama said that was such a shocker.

Obama did a good job of acquitting himself for a comment he made earlier in the week. He said that if there was actionable intelligence that Bin Laden was in Pakistan and Mushariff refused to cooperate, he would unilaterally “take him out.” You can imagine that this drew severe criticism. Tonight, on his home turf, he backpedaled quite gracefully, but managed to still sound tough. Hillary said that “it’s great to think big, but when you are running for President, not everything you think ought to be spoken.” This drew boos. Dodd, he did very well in the debate also took Obama on.

I kept expecting to see Suzanne dive into that pool, but no…
What kind of business.
Nite, LL & WDN!!!
in my humble opinion Hillary is quite correct. You just offend everybody one way or another…the Clintons seemed to always do what needed to be done even in the face of much opposition from the senate and house…takes courage to keep your mouth shut. highly underrated. Let me remind you of one astrologers prediction that OBama could be president if he didn’t shoot himself in the foot talking out loud what was best left unsaid.
I just saw Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson at a book signing for Sandworms of Dune Kevin said something about Bin Lauden “might be the dark side of Paul Atreides” Brian compared the Emperor sending his troops against Paul to our invasion of Afghanistan the comparisons should not be taken out of context but they are interesting.
Hi Teddy… and Patrick…
The Utah mine – heard that it was not an earthquake but the mine collapse that was measured. That the miners did not speak English and the Mexican consulate was notified. That there was over 200 safety violations in the last two years. Also heavy Repug donor.
Figures….. he does not want to have the families or the fact that he was probably hiring undocumented workers seen in the TeeVee.

That’s where you put coal back in the ground.
Watching debates again.
Kucinich kicks ass. He really does.
they cause an avalanche on purpose and everybody just gets out of the way… finding coal ya know
The Dems in the debate were all at least good.
The weakest Dem (Biden, I think) is infinitely better than the best Republican (which, well, is none of them…)
Trex, I have a bit of info/gossip re: your senator now up. Beneath you if you go with major polit.aspirations, but possibly useful to know..

g’ night, katymine = hope you feel better…
BigMitch @ 63
you dig a tunnel mine it then you collapse the roof by blowing it up and then mine the material broken by the blast and the fall which I think would be easier than mining solid rock. The blast this time collapsed the “cough ” safe area where the miners were at trapping them.
spiderpaws… what’s the latest on Edwards?
So when you we go after the dem cowards in the house and senate? I already called Diane Feinstein’s office this afternoon to say my piece.

IIRC, it’s where they set the charges to rattle the coal down from prior excavations of the coal seams! Similar to the recharging of former oil wells with the slurry remnants!
From the Huffington Post:
In the weeks following the Sago mine disaster in West Virginia in 2006, the owner of the Utah mine where six workers remained trapped underground Tuesday called state efforts to pass stricter mine safety laws “seriously flawed, knee-jerk” reactions.
“I resent these politicians playing politics with my employees’ safety,” Robert E. Murray told the Columbus Dispatch in January 2006.
Murray was responding to a proposal in the Ohio legislature that would have created a mining emergency operations center and required workers to wear wireless communications devices.
Similar legislation was introduced and passed in the West Virginia legislature during a single day.
Ohio lawmakers eventually passed a less stringent mine safety package.
Six workers have been trapped since Monday in the Crandall Canyon mine owned by Murray Energy Corporation.
According to government records, federal mine safety regulators have levied $260,073 in fines against the mine since 1995. The mine has received 32 citations since the beginning of 2007.
A spokesman for Murray Energy defended the company’s safety record Tuesday.
“That number of violations does not suggest in any way that we are an unsafe operation,” said Rob Moore, a Murray Energy vice president. “We are one of the safest mining operations in the country.”
Murray told the Associated Press Tuesday, “I believe we run a very safe coal mine. We’ve had an excellent record.”
In 2003 another Murray-owned mining company, KenAmerican Resources, and four of its top employees, were convicted by a federal court in Kentucky of conspiring to violate federal mine-safety rules.
A judge later threw out part of the verdict, but upheld one single count of conspiring to violate safety laws against both the company and a mine superintendent.
A spokesman for the United Mineworkers of America said Murray’s vocal opposition in 2006 to the proposed safety laws in Ohio was typical of his “volatile” personality.

I have a letter from Reid and one from the DNC asking for money. I’ll be sure to let them know why they’re not getting any.

It would take a long time to grow it back, Suz. But it would be easier to manage short.
Coming up from the dives would be much easier!
BigMitch @ 85
even older women?
I’m wondering if Bush progovernment anti safty polices created an enviroment where miners for example felt they could skimp on safty for greater profit knowing that unless they killed someone they would never get prosecuted.
Suzanne @ 82
My Wife has cut her gorgeous hair only twice, since I’ve married her, both times it was to contribute her locks to the ACA’s wig program for the cancer patients! The only reason I allowed it…!!! 8-)

Well, one of his major pushes since he began campaigning is limits on lawsuits and getting rid of class action suits. That definetely suggests to business owners that he is with them. What law firm is going to take on a class action for peanuts?
Wee bit o’history: remember the marriage from hell to the repub fundie – he had an honest to goodness rule that i was not allowed to cut my hair more than a 1/4″ trim – yeah, seriously.
so the minute i found out about his affair with my next door neighbor, who attended the same fundie church we did, well, i called my hairdresser and said cut it all off.
and did. very very short. he couldn’t say a fucking word but his jaw muscle was a’twitching at a frantic pace.
and since then, it has taken almost 15 years to get this long and i’m sick and tired of wearing it up in a bun. i can’t stand having hair on my face and wrapped around my neck while sleeping so it is up all the time.
i think i’ve proven my point that i can grow it long if i wanted.
Some predict Edwards will drop out suddenly due to some information he receives…it looks to me as if he will be in it to the end and it’s anybody’s guess how it will come off. If Obama does shoot himself in the foot by what he says and drops in the pols (he very well could under continuing pressure of campaigning and senate duty, mouthing off is his one flaw according to some) it would be Edwards and Hillary and then…she would ask him to join her on the ticket. He would feel he could get furthur that way this time around.
He should be nominated. he is the best person and we would all get health care immediately. His concern and championing of health care is real and shows in his chart.
The best charts for luck are Gore and Obama…after that Hillary and Edwards. Edwards chart shows sometimes he does not care a hoot about being president. Just really ambivilent.
CT – you allowed it?
newtonusr @ 92
True, I think I’ll keep her around!!! (Body Heat, ya know!) *g*
BigMitch @ 65
I just finished watching the whole debate uninterrupted. I thought it was the best dabate so far and KO handled a quick pace very well.
Kucinich speaks for me and just gets better, he has my vote.
That said, Barack lost that debate tonight, hands down. He cannot get a truthy bias in his head re all things middle east.. I never thought I would say this about someone who voted correctly on the AUMF but Barack doesn’t get it and the flaws are dangerous, imo.
Wouldn’t it have been great if Hillary and Barack (aka DLC candidates) were not on that stage at all this evening.. Imagine how much more substance and calls for accountability we would all see and hear.
Edwards did very well and Dodd should move up as well.
Suzanne @ 82
Long hair keeps your ears warm in winter but, then again, so does a wooly hat.
Suzanne @ 98
I was waiting for a reaction to that, quietly, in my gay little corner over here….
spiderpaws @ 52
can this be said for whistleblowers? defectors?
Even if Obama did bluster re: Pak,
imho, the booing that HRC got has to do with balance.
People want sunshine & free speech.
Suzanne @ 98
:P!!!
Eureka Springs @ 100
Correction: Obama did not vote correctly on the AUMF; he was not in the Senate yet.
CTuttle @ 99
Your wife sounds like quite a woman. She allows you to think you “allow” her to cut her hair.
CTuttle @ 104
seriously, read what i wrote again and then rethink my question ct
Since you wear it in a bun all the time I see no reason why you shouldn’t cut it off Suzanne…however, you need a good cutter, not a hack (job)
TeddySanFran @ 94
We need to tie this to the bridge collapse that and do we really trust a Cheney Government to build safe Nuclear plants if they can’t rebuild New Orleans, fix bridges before they collapse, and now 2 ? mining disasters.
Bush has proven that his Government at least ” IS the problem” as President Reagen said.
BigMitch @ 106
Damn it, Why do you always have to rain on my parade, Eh??? *g*
Suzanne, my beloved has waist-length mahogany hair with waves, just gorgeous. If she cut it, I’d cry. I’d still adore her, but I’d cry.
Do what you wish with your hair, of course, but long, gorgeous hair is #1 sexy in my book.
Suzanne @ 82
Because you will miss it more than you know and it’s a drag talking yourself into letting it grow back.. Also you have made it through half or more of the summer heat…it’s all downhill now, fall is just around the corner.
Also getting haircuts all the time su**s.
Most of all because long hair looks great and feels good.
Suzanne @ 98
Well yeah … the husband is still Lord & Master in many homes, Suz !!!
… tee hee hee … that comment oughta make your hair burn right off …
things come undone @ 89
Actually, this goes back to the Reagan years. It’s a combination of deregulation and underfunding oversight.
Before Reagan took office, there were about 50 federal mine inspectors in Kentucky (it’s a big mining state and there’s a high incidence of illegal mining–unregistered seams opened up on weekends with contract labor, etc.), and after Reagan was elected, that number was reduced to two, along with some changes in regulation that encouraged “voluntary compliance.”
If this asshole in Utah had 118 citations for dangerous conditions in just a few years–in the current regulatory environment–in earlier years, he probably would have been closed down, and promptly. It means that every time a mine inspector was able (likely infrequently) to visit his operation, something awful was found.
things come undone @ 109
bold added. exactly!
Suzanne @ 107
I relished it all the more, Ma Cheri…!!! ;-)
Things come undone –
Republicans run on the platform that government is the problem, and then when elected, they prove it.
Petrocelli @ 113
Spontaneous combustion, eh? ;-)
spiderpaws @ 97
What information could Edwards get that would cause him to drop out? I’m for an Edwards Obama ticket myself. Who is predicting this?
CTuttle @ 118
More like a controlled Nu-cu-lar Explosion …
montag @ 114
A little difficult to judge what a citation is, not being in the industry. If it is like the restaurant industry, a citation can be some trivial thing. But the fact that there were criminal convictions tells me that this guy is a fucker.
Edwards/Obama would be a good ticket! I could go for that!!!
Petrocelli @ 120
…controlled…???
things come undone – it’s an astrological prediction…
Edwards and anybody would be a good ticket. But don’t forget that Wes Clark is hanging out, burnishing his resume, and ready to run for V.P.
Oh man, thanks Teddy, why is it he keeps claiming he voted against war in Irak?
Suzanne- i keep my long because-
its cooler on top of my head than on my neck
guys think it sexy-esp when i shake it down
i am too cheap & have too little free time to always get it cut
CTuttle @ 122
I dream of a Gore/Edwards ticket … Edwards is the perfect V.P. for Gore … Dean has to stay where he is … doing a great job !
Fine hair is a bitch. It’s either got to be long enough to put up or ultra short and trimmed regularly. Ask your female (meat space) friends. Depends on your features I think.
Eureka Springs @ 126
He spoke against it.
after listening to the debate, I didn’t come away liking Obama very much – I thought he avoided answering questions and instead “speechified” on something vaguely related… pissed me off…
thing is, there is nothing to be gained by inflaming the Pakis…imagine? Better to say something to the effect that you might take a hard look at the policy there to see if it was working. Talking war/troops on the nether regions of Pakistan is probably not going to go over. Most mainstream people (seriously) have no idea the bad guys are hiding there. I mean if you watch Fox or your local news report it is not reported. My sister watches the news and doesn’t have a clue what is going on. It makes Obama look like he is a war monger which he is not. It is probably not what he said but how he said it. I immedaitely thought it was a boo boo even if he is right. If you have a son or daughter in the troops this is not what you want to hear.
OldCoastie @ 124
Spidey? Any thoughts???
I’m gonna watch TDS before I leap through the tubes and turn a few roosters into hens
BigMitch @ 121
I’m using citation in a generic sense. The emphasis is on “dangerous conditions.” This mine had several hundred citations for ordinary infractions that weren’t determined to be potentially life-threateninng, and a 118 that were (since 2004, I believe).
Suzanne, if you’re really sick of your hair, then cut it. It’ll grow back. I’ve had short, short hair for years, which is why I’m an expert on cold ears. Funnily enough, I’m currently growing it (but only to shoulder length) because I got sick of having the same hairstyle all the time.
OldCoastie @ 131
Preachified? Haven’t seen tonight’s yet, but that’s what it feels like to me when Obama speaks. Feels like a revival.
montag @ 114
if we accept that Utah has as many inspectors as Kentucky I’m guessing they don’t and can’t do a through inspection they just run literaly through the mine and list the obvious violations. This jerk mine owner needs to get all his mines inspected by real engineers and not government hacks who PLAY BALL on mine and bridge inspection work.
CTuttle @ 123
Yup … just meant to take out you and me … *g*
BigMitch @ 125
Sec.Def!!! Richardson~Sec.State!!!
OldCoastie @ 131
This is not his best format. He gives long thoughtful answers much better. And his speeches are wonderful, as we saw at the DNC in 2004.
That speech was a call to America to heal its wounds, and an attempt to be a uniter. I do not know if this is the temper of the times, now. And certainly not in the primary campaign.
BigMitch @ 106
Exactly, no bigger fool than a man who thinks he’s head of the house … *g*
no Loo Hoo – like Obama launched into a speech – I know the preachy thing you are talking about and that wasn’t it… more like he’d pick up part of the thread of the question, NOT answer the question but punch up his own personal chunk of stump speech… he didn’t do it on every question, but he ticked me off early enough that I started really paying attention to whether or not he was answering the question…
things come undone @ 138
That’s a rather dramatic–and unfounded–assumption about both the background and competence of federal mining inspectors, an impression I hope I was not giving. The problem is that the “small-government” types arbitrarily reduced the number of needed inspectors, not that the inspectors are incompetent.
The “REAL” mining engineers you speak of work for the mine owners….
Petrocelli @ 139
Hmmm… I didn’t like the ‘Roosters into Hens’ inference!!! Not healthy…!!! ;-)
OldCoastie @ 124
” If the Stars will not support us, If they would see us slaves then I will burn their lying faces from the sky!”
I wrote that once on a basement wall in college when I was drinking.
Sometimes you have to create your own fate!
Truth is he will get some kind of unexpected news which could change things (Edwards) may not be at all related to his running…but a couple of astrologers think he will get out. It is all speculative at best. his chart looks so good though, he is fine person.
Is it true Wes Clark would take a VP spot?
spiderpaws @ 147
That’s my guess, but I have no inside information, and I have not seen anyone say this with authority.
TSF, did you hear Wes Clark at DKos? I didn’t think he really said much. Get out of Iraq, but he didn’t share a plan or any timetable.
spiderpaws @ 147
I know he is anxious to join a Democratic Cabinet!
suzi – can I watch?
thanks, spiderpaws – always an interesting perspective… I’m hoping Edwards stays in…
don’t know about Wes Clark… he may be very good in a cabinet position…
Suzanne @ 134
Jon & John were great tonight … my $ 0.02 is … the best length for hair is at the top of the shoulder blade … long enough to frame the face beautifully, yet manageable.
If your hair gets frizzy during the hot and humid summer days, put Sesame Oil on once a week for 30 minutes before shampooing … no need for conditioner. (I grew up with 6 ladies and their countless friends) *g*
Huh, Sesame oil.
spiderpaws @ 132
“Pakis” is as derogatory to us Brown people as the “N” word …
Petro…there is Noooooooooooo humidity hereabouts! heh
Suzanne @ 82
short hair on girls is very sexy,
but it is much higher maintenance as upkeep requires regular trims.
your hair sounds beautiful.
well not according to my Pakistani friends…if so, we trade a lot of insults. How brown are you? Isn’t Petrocelli Italian? or is that not really your name?
“Pakis” is as derogatory to us Brown people as the “N” word …
I was unaware of that, Petro.
I didn’t realize Pakis was a derogatory term either, so thanks for that, Petro.
Watching the debate now…
sorry if I offended any Pakistani people who are very dear to me.
montag @ 144
I’m sure there are independent engineering firms who are competent to do an independent analysis which is just what we need for the mines and the bridges.
Everytime Com Ed in Illinois had a problem with their power plants they couldn’t fix they called the engineering firm my dad worked for.
Government and inhouse corporate Engineers have to much incentive to cover their and their bosses butts. I admit the government guys were overworked and couldn’t do a proper inspection. But we need an independent group to say that.
Loo Hoo. @ 154
Many ladies in my family have thin hair that frizz during the humid summer months … Sesame oil takes care of it, although you might have to shampoo twice.
Petrocelli @ 163
shampoo twice during the summer months? Hell, the women I know shampoo every day.
My hair gets frizzy in the fog, Petrocelli. I’ll have to give the sesame oil a try.
good night all…
Suzanne – you are getting a lot of votes here to keep your hair… I cut my long, thick, wavy mane 25 years ago and have never regretted it… I keep it very short and it is so nice to be able to wash and wear straight out of the shower…
but that’s me…
Biden yelling again, and Edwards sounds great after him.
TREX!!!

Sorry, I just caught up with the end of the thread (got distracted by debates) and had to say something to announce my presence. :)
Loo Hoo: try pure Jojoba, a few drops in your shampoo bottle shaken up.
OldCoastie @ 166
Nite, OC!!!
hey neuro – nice entrance :)
g’nite oc
neurophius @ 168
Well senior, lets hear your debate thoughts..)
Suzanne, for what it’s worth, I’ve never met you nor seen a picture of you, but I have always envisioned you with relatively short hair, and I thought it looked fine…
Although I agree long hair can be very attractive.
spiderpaws @ 161
I know you didn’t mean to, but someone else might object quite strongly and cause you needless embarrassment.
Your Brown friends probably do not know the origin of the term, it was used as a racial slur, like the “N” word
and should be treated as an expletive.
things come undone @ 162
Every “independent” engineering group I’ve ever encountered was looking to create work for itself, or its paying clients. There’s that side of it, too….
But, don’t blame the guy in the field who is overworked, and when he finds violations, can’t get the political side of the department to sign off on closures until the violations are fixed.
This is what the assholes in the Republican Party have been working toward ever since FDR’s time. These guys don’t care if people get killed. People are disposable–profits aren’t.
spiderpaws @ 169
I’ll try that too. Anything!
Please don’t tell the pakistanis it is a racial slur
Nite all…
Suzanne,
How tall are you?
BigMitch @ 164
*Smackin’ forehead forcefully* … Mitch, I meant that when applying Sesame Oil to the hair,
you may have to shampoo twice afterwards instead of the norm (once for most people) …
suzanne…aren’t you a hat person as well?

newtonusr @ 185
Being tall makes me real?
spiderpaws @ 147
Sorry about the tone Spiderpaws I like astrology and do find some value in it. I just don’t like anyone even implying that people shouldn’t try without trying first.
Still it is good to get information about what other people especialy astrologers are thinking.
Given the Presidents low populaity I’m sure that he is consulting with pro bush astrologers along with bloggers, newspaper columnists historians etc looking for support.
What would a probush astrolger be telling the president?
We could track that info to see if he might be listening to astrologers and then get a jump on his plans!
“Well senior, lets hear your debate thoughts..)”
I think the presence of a loud, passionate, enthusiastic audience that gleefully ignored Keith’s pleas for no applause added a dimension of reality to the debate that the others have lacked. The candidates who did best played off of that.
The Clinton/Dodd tag team assault on Obama was interesting. I don’t think Barack handled it badly, but it did present a challenge for him. Made me wonder whether Dodd wants to be Secretary of State in a Clinton administration, or something…
I thought Edwards maximized the value of his labor record, but so did Kucinich, and I don’t think any of those folks could be called anti-union…
Can you imagine ghoulish Ghouliani, old McCain and slick Romney trying to appeal to that crowd? LOL…
I have been listening to the talking heads on MSNBC and after a while it all pretty much sounds like conventional wisdom. My gut feeling is that Clinton did not lose any ground tonight, and probably scored some points. And from where she is sitting, that is pretty groovy.
Suzanne @ 186
I’m gonna shut the hell up now…
spiderpaws @ 177
The Pakistanis in Canada already know that it is a racial slur and never refer to each other as such, although it was used to denigrate all brown people.
5′10″ with long blond hair? Now when I see “Suzanne” with the facebook thingie, I will be picturing Gwen Stefani.

Imagine Republicans having to face him. Tears would be rolling down their faces too. But not for him; for themselves, of course.
CTuttle @ 199
i saw that too and tweety was all over it.
I’ve actually got my flannels on, it’s that cold here…
BigMitch @ 201
It would be great if the Repugs were shown this and made to reply.

It’s August! Where are ya, Down Under?!!! *g*

What did Tweety say ?
yd jim said,
“i saw the guy on disability tell how they screwed him and his family out of his pension by the company going into bankruptcy and he broke up trying to tell how he can’t afford health insurance for his wife: 34 years with LTV Steel, i think.
i saw this guy again in the rebroadcast.
i cried both times.”
Yes. It was pretty poignant. There ought to be a law.
remember the mark twain, the coldest winter i ever spent was a summer in san francisco – or something to that effect.

Government Engineers need the abilty to close a mine or a bridge without being leaned on not to by politicans. Until they have that and the numbers to do real inspections well until then we can’t count on them.
Everything has to be reinspected 100 engineers may be good but two overworked or leaned on engineers can and has wrecked my confidence in the system.
I don’t want those bad engineers to be given the chance to cover their buts by reinspecting a bridge or mine they did a hack job on.
I want independent inspections, and yes independent firms do have a bias for creating more work for themselves.
Right now I want that, I want them to go to town on inspections.
After we get a Democrat as President we can rebuild the governments abilty to do inspections.
Right now I don’t trust government or company engineers.
Petrocelli @ 200
yes, it was a perfect pitch for edwards and he saw it coming and hit it out of soldier’s field.

I saw that gentleman and thought of you, Suz.
Petrocelli @ 204
They can’t even handle an unscripted audience like You-tube, do ya really think they’d allow the Gent into the building???
yellowdog jim @ 211
What struck me was Edwards’ genuine demeanor, which gave depth to his response.
CTuttle said,
“They can’t even handle an unscripted audience like You-tube, do ya really think they’d allow the Gent into the building???”
They probably would have considered his crutches to be a political statement, like Cindy Sheehan’s T-shirt at the Sorry State of the Union, and thrown him out.
Almost 2 am here and 80 degrees. By far the warmest night of the summer.
Ronnie & Nancy had a good astrologer and you see how they fared, doing things with perfect timing. If Bush followed an astrologers advice, he wouldn’t be in the mess he is in. A very prominant astrologer did his war chart before the invasion and showed where it would be unsucessful and a real disaster, a “wound that would not heal” were his words. Most people still think of astrologers as fortune tellers and obviously they don’t know what is involved.
when it was revealed that Ronnie & Nancy had an astrologer and rarely made a move without her, there was a big stink! anyone remember that? I had a good laugh… finally it answered the question how they managed the spin so well.
Petrocelli @ 207
he said it was the moment of the debate.
something to the effect that it was a turning point in the campaign, even. he thought it might, finally, make the race about health care. he was very excited about it.
i find matthews hard to take.
even this was hard to take.
he was his usual over-the-top self.
spiderpaws, what do you think about g.w. boosh and tecumseh’s curse? Do you think that because he wasn’t really elected in 2000, he is immune from it?
Petrocelli @ 207
It was more KO than Tweety, but, KO said his case represents a confluence of corporate greed and governance! Whereby the corporations have sold the worker downstream in Pensions, Healthcare, Jobs, etc…
spiderpaws @ 217
Anymore information about that chart like what happens in the end?
CTuttle @ 220
Absolutely correct, if Napoleon Hill was alive to see the state of American Corporations like Bethlehem Steel, G.M. or Ford, …
neurophius @ 219
is that the every presidential term that starts in a year that ends in 0 curse?
Well it’s not over yet now is it? We’ve still got time to get him out and make the Curse Come True….also there is some talk that Cheney is the real president and so he will be the one to go. It’s delicious thinking about that…
Petrocelli @ 153
Sesame Oil? does this work with insane curly frizz too?
Yes, Suzanne.

Impeach them both = Pelosi ‘07
spiderpaws @ 224
Star Light, Star Brite…!!! ;-)
I thought Edwards response to the gentleman was heartfelt and encouraging but I really was releived to hear the audience applaud the fellow and his question so enthusiastically.
Maybe we really will demand universal health care for all.
I want to hear one of the candidates to admit that Iraq was better with Sadaam Hussein in power.
CTuttle @ 122
Right now that’s my dream ticket.
yellowdog jim @ 227
It would be ironic if Pelosi were to thus benefit from a process that she has declared “off the table”…
As a practical matter, I think she would have to come around in order for it to happen. But perhaps she fears that her motives would be questioned.
I say, just do it.
If the Dems had a spine, they would make Universal Health Care – not universal health care coverage – a top item on their platform.
After all, if it is good enough for our congresscritters and president, it should be good enough for the rest of us too.
TRex @ 231
So, how were the hash browns, TRex?
Personally, I would like to see a ticket with Richardson on it, although he would also make a good Secretary of State…
Eureka Springs @ 229
Demanding Universal Health Care is not enough, the system has to be changed from top to bottom.
Have you seen Sicko?
Insurance companies have to be removed from Health Care … there should be no Ins. companies between a patient and her/his Doctor for Health Care.
things come undone @ 210
Again, I think you’re making gross assumptions and putting the blame where it doesn’t belong (if you’re speaking of the I-35W bridge).
That bridge was inspected regularly, and presumably by state employees. Those inspectors did not only describe the structure as deficient, but also said it might need replacement, not just quick fixes, as far back as the early `90s, and as recently as 2005. Those concerns were not acted on for political reasons, not engineering ones.
Can you blame an inspector who says, in essence, “this bridge is gonna fall down unless it’s replaced,” and the money-hungry, let’s-cut-taxes-on-the-rich assholes in the state legislature won’t provide the money to do so?
Somehow, I think you’re misunderstanding the problem. An independent assessment of bridges doesn’t get the money to fix them. That’s been the problem in Minnesota, specifically, and the rest of the country, generally, for more than two decades.
Your attitude is predictable–it’s the government’s fault. Well, of course, it is–especially when you have people in office who believe government is the problem, and that every one of government’s functions should be turned over to the private sector to maximize its profits.
But, with regard to the I-35W bridge, just keep your eyes and ears open, and you’ll discover that Pawlenty and his forebearers were the ones killing the money for needed repairs–as has been happening all around the country. The state engineers saying the bridge needed fixing are not, emphatically, not the problem in this matter. The politicians are, however.
Sorry I screwed up No. 232…
Petrocelli @ 222
Think and Grow Rich!
Eureka Springs @ 229
As M. Moore has pointed out so adroitly, nobody in the UK, France, Canada, etc. have had to file for Bankruptcy because of Medical Bills!!! A poignant thought, I thought!!! ;-)
Obama is a good foil for Hillary. She looks and sounds Presidential. And tonight you could see her as a tough but thoughtful Commander-in-Chief who would use every tool in her diplomatic arsenal before resorting to force. I have no doubt that Hillary would be tough enough to use force if needed and would do so in an effective way but always as a last result.
Obama talks a lot and often avoids answering a question directly. What you generally get from him is a lot of noise but then when you think about what he said you realize there wasn’t much to it. I’m sorry but he’s clearly not ready for prime time.
Edwards is interesting. I suspect that if Obama wasn’t in the race then we’d see a tigher race between Hillary and Edwards. Obama has forced Hillary to sharpen her responses. It’s clear she’s running a general election campaign, which is the best option for her. Although her answers might not always play well with the audience, I suspect they play much better with the average voter that’s not paying close attention now. She’s clearly setting herself up for a general election. By the time the primary season is over and she’s the nominee, there’ll not be anything the Republicans can use against her in the general election. Yeah, I think she’s that good so far. She has Obama to thank for that too.
It’s a shame that Chris Dodd isn’t really registering much in the polls. He’s done a great job and has been a big surprise to me.
For purposes of disclosure, I’m leaning toward Edwards but haven’t decided on anyone yet. As of tonight, I’ve ruled out Obama. I just don’t think he’s up to it. His non-answers and inexperience are just too much for me. I never thought I’d say it, but Hillary is looking better and better. She’s growing on me. But I still can’t shake that nagging “triangulation” feeling. I worry that she will try to play against the middle on the important issues of the day and that’s definitely not what we need in a President. I hope I’m wrong. I hope that if she’s the nominee, she surprises everyone by being a bold visionary. Unfortunately, although Richardson is a good man, he’s just too uneven of a campaigner.
When all is said and done, it may just be that “Hillary really is the girl for me.” ;-)
I can see a Hillary/Edwards ticket. Edwards would bring a sunny optimism to the Presidential general election campaign. And who doesn’t love his wife, Elizabeth.
The astrologer who did the war chart of king george was Jim Shawvan. He said the entire pesidency was marked by aggression because of Bush’s prominant mars. I took his statement of the “wound that would not heal” to mean this was a situation in Iraq that was long term but good astrologers wouldn’t go out on a limb and actually predict, they just tell you what it looks like based on the aspects. Doesn’t mean their interpretation of these aspects is correct. Astrologers love to talk aspects to each other and say how they see it. After the time period involved is over there is a lot of comparing of notes.
yellowdog jim @ 227
If the past 7 months are any indication, Bush/Cheney will be given everything they wish, by this Congress.

Richardson has made some improvements in the domestic violence realm–at least in getting some enforcement for existing laws, which didn’t exist at all during the Johnson years.
And, there has been some recognition of animal abuse, too. NM did, this past session, finally outlaw cockfighting, IIRC.

As a matter of fact, cheney has two black holes conjunct his sun and one opposed to his sun and he has another black hole conjunct his natal saturn…in this case it makes him among other things an enabler for king george and much more but hey, I’m out of here
Loo Hoo. @ 278
Maybe. Could be potent. But one thing bothers me above any other objection I have about Hillary: It’s been obvious for a year that Hillary was the Goopers fav Dem, the candidate they wanted to be pitted against.
Why? Many reasons, but beyond Tim Griffin and the Rose Law Firm, she let Bubba off the hook for getting his joint copped. I think that’s their big stick.
Good Night Spiderpaws I’m leaving too!
the following piece just appeared on a wire service:
Singapore: Former US VP Gore Says He May Re-enter Politics, But No Plans To Seek 2008 Presidency
Updated:2007-08-08 14:52:47 MYT
SINGAPORE: Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore said Wednesday (Aug 8th) that he may return to politics in the future but repeated his position that he has no plans to enter the 2008 presidential race.
“I may re-enter politics at some point in the future because I’m only 59 years old,” Gore told reporters on the sidelines of a forum in Singapore.
Gore said he has “no plan” to run in the 2008 presidential election but aims to make the environment a focus of public discussion during the campaign.
“There is no single candidate that is putting forward a comprehensive argument about the environment or making climate change a priority,” Gore said. “I will continue to work so that public opinion will push all candidates to make climate a priority.”
Gore lost the 2000 U.S. presidential election to George W. Bush despite winning the popular vote. (AP)

Wow about Gore saying he’d consider politics, but not ‘08.
If Hillary were to win the primary and asked Edwards to be her VP, I hope he would say yes. If he is as passionate about healthcare, workers’ rights and our economy as he says he is, how could he turn down an opportunity like that? Course Hillary would have to give him some autonomy on particular issues…
newtonusr, I think the Vitter situation got her off on the Bubba issue. She didn’t do anything wrong, and America and the world still love Bill.
I think the repubs are saying they want Hillary to run because Karl tells them to say so. I think they’re scared to death of her.
echoing in the tubes.
Loo Hoo. @ 288
Right, and he’ll have earned it. He’s been on target with his anti-poverty campaign since Kerry conceded in ‘04. Edwards has never let up. Not to mention, he is superbly qualified.
newtonusr @ 283
She’s the DLC’s favorite dem, the corporations’ favorite dem, the lobbiests’ favorite dem, and A*P*C’s favorite dem. Ultmately, she and the Republicans have mostly the same masters.
John Edwards for President
My reasons why:
He isn’t afraid to speak out against the power elite.
He has consistently pushed for dealing with what’s important now.
He doesn’t wait for others to do it and then jump on the band wagon.
He knows how to admit he’s wrong when he’s wrong.
Elizabeth Edwards.
The MSM have consistently tried to belittle him and take him down.
See, a Hillary/Edwards ticket would really be a threefer with Bill as the Ambassador-at-large. What could be sweeter?
wigwam @ 292
exactly. John Edwards is the only candidate that has a chance to win over Obama and Hillary. the rest don’t have enough traction, money or organization with the big primary month less than six months away. if the net roots got behind Edwards he could take it. i will support the Democratic nominee whoever it is but if we want a progressive agenda and not have it coopted then Edwards is our best hope.
Loo Hoo. @ 289
I hope you are right about the Goopers being secretly frightened by Hillary as nominee. But her takes on flag burning, her statements about video games, her fundraiser with Mr. Murdoch, her pandering to pharma and her insistence that she is mistake-free wrt the AUMF… it is a little disturbing.
And I believe she was honorable in her treatment of Bubba, but when has hypocrisy been an impediment to the Goopers wrt Vitter-ade – he’s not running for Prez.
As I say, I hope you have the correct read on this.
Loo Hoo. @ 294
i could live with that. something tells me though that Hillary would not choose John Edwards for a running mate. i would bet that she would choose Obama before Edwards, or somebody no one’s even considered.
But her takes on flag burning, her statements about video games, her fundraiser with Mr. Murdoch, her pandering to pharma and her insistence that she is mistake-free wrt the AUMF… it is a little disturbing.
Remember the flag burning bill ended the discussion of a flag burning amendment. I don’t know about the video games. How has she pandered to pharma? Is AUMF something about her vote to give Bush permission to go into Iraq?
I don’t really care if she takes money from lobbyists as long as her votes are right. Thanks.
fahrender @ 297
Vilsack was discussed in just this vein when he dropped out.
farhender, she sure could have someone in mind other than Edwards. That would be my first choice, though. Obama has been nasty with her, and Edwards has been strong in his beliefs, but hasn’t taken her on personally. At least not that I’ve seen.
Loo Hoo. @ 298
the vast majority of politicians who take money from lobbyists vote the way lobbyists want them to vote. this is why the American people have been ignored or screwed and then ignored for the past thirty nine years. Hillary would be no higher profile in this race than Bill Richardson if she didn’t have a lot of corporate money in her coffers. she will owe them and the bill will be paid, one way or another. that’s why you should care.
I’d like to see a spreadsheet of candidates, lobbyist money they have taken-including amounts, and votes that relate to the corporation or union.
Loo Hoo. @ 300
he was a gentleman about it but he nailed her pretty good at YK2 about taking corporate money. i think Hillary wouldn’t choose Edwards because i think she will want someone she can control more easily. i don’t think he would accept an offer based on the terms she would give him. if he hadn’t left the Senate and hadn’t gone on to do the things he has done since ‘04 maybe he would but now, i don’t think so. could be wrong, that’s just my intuition.
‘nite Loo Hoo.
time to go pretend like i’m working. nice chatting with you.
You could sure be right. It’s hard to think of any foundation or whatever where he could contribute as much as he could as VP. The reverse question, of course, is would Hillary take the VP spot if Edwards wins the primary. I sure hope she would.
nite
Loo Hoo. @ 302
Loo Hoo, on a brighter note, I don’t believe Hillary is ‘bad” per se. She has a nasty habit of dropping into a southern drawl when she needs it, she flippantly reduces the objections of crowds to, “well, that’s about what I expected…”, and Senator Clinton simply cannot say she regrets not taking an eyes-open look at the AUMF (like Senator Feingold did).
These are warts of a “political” nature, not so much of character. I just think there are more qualified candidates, IMHO. Gahd, Joe Biden – what a tool – is monstrously qualified. Chris Dodd, Edwards, more qualified than Hillary.
What is AUMF?
If anyone is still awake, here’s an article about lobbyist money taken by the leading dems. It doesn’t factor in the votes related to the money accepted/donated, though.
Loo Hoo. @ 308
I’m sorry… the nickname ‘we’ gave for the “Authorization to Use Military Force” against Iraq. Hillary has refused to regard her vote in support of it as a mistake. John Edwards has declared his vote in support of it as a “mistake”, as have other Dem Senators.
Some Senators actually read the bill, like Russ Feingold, but most simply felt the heat of war as a political imperative, and voted for it.
Thanks, newtonusr, I googled it. I do not understand why Hillary doesn’t admit to regretting that vote. That is truly a missing piece of the entire puzzle.
At the time of the vote, I was really confused about the whole thing. I remember thinking that if there are questions, you don’t vote in favor of war, you vote against war. Then Colin Powell presented his BS at the United Nations, and it really made me wonder because I had respect for Powell at the time. Like you say, Feingold and others voted against it, so the info must have been there. Or maybe it was a gamble for them too?
Loo Hoo. @ 311
And still, Hillary may be a capable and thoughtful President. I just can’t make myself like her candidacy.
I think the country, whether it agrees with me or not, needs a Liberal. A true Liberal, however improbable his or her election, is probably the only hope to effectively roll back much of the damage of the last 30 years.
When Powell was confirmed and made SecState, I breathed a sigh of relief. It never occurred to me that a man of “such integrity” would let ChimpCo get too far out on a limb. Oops!
Folding up Loo Hoo, pups. G’night!
It’s hot!
I was watching the teevee earlier this AM and saw a bit on the mining disaster in Utah.
You know,in Canada, there are laws that force mining companies to provide underground safe rooms stocked with water, food and other supplies throughout EVERY mine. This way if a disaster happens,at least people stand a chance of surviving.
I’m so sick of corporations being recipiants of blind trust. They do not do what’s right when no one is watching,EVER. They prove it over and over and over. Anytime I hear someone defend big bidness it makes me ill.
The heat here in GA is making me freaking cranky, lol. It’s a little after 6 am and it’s already close to 90 freaking degrees.

Yep. I always considered myself to be kind of boring and in the middle politically. I consider myself to be pretty socially liberal, but I want my government to be fiscally responsible without being mean and stingy about it. Not that unreasonable of me really.
In these times,in the place where I live,I am considered a radical leftist. It’s silly.
I was raised by fundie wingnut Amway distributors in Central Ohio. Back in the 70’s,the unholy alliance of bidness and religion really started taking hold. Rich DeVos actually came to our house once in the early part of 1970. I was almost 10,and I remember not liking him at all,he sent my kid creep detector off the charts. A few years later Hal Lindsey spoke at a business meeting my parents attended and I had to start going to bible study groups based on his first insane book. How I escaped all that conservative-ness,I have no idea. I just knew the stuff I was being told didn’t “feel”right. My siblings didn’t escape it. I haven’t seen my brother in over a decade. My sister or may parents in over 4 yrs. My mom actually thinks my house is possessed by satanic evil. In reality though,my mom and sister use their religion so they can feel superior to me. Ack,who needs ‘em. It’s hard explaining that to my kids though.
I think saying they moved the bar right is an understatement.

Jon @ 240
Hmmmm…interesting comment….there’s enough triangluating in it make Hillary blush.
Why is it that every national poll I’ve seen over the last few months has Clinton neck and neck, and sometimes LOSING to the Repube candidates? We’re talking about perhaps the weakest nutjob group of political candidates I can ever remember seeing in any election. Seriously, and it’s a toss up if she could beat this bunch of wackos. On the other hand, Obama and Edwards have consistently come out several points ahead of the entire Repube field.
It’s unfortunate that she’s doing so well among Dem voters nationally, and I suspect alot of that still has to do with name recognition. Plus, there’s been a steady stream “WHEN Hillary is the nominee…” talk over the last couple of years, and that’s happening more and more now even here at FDL.
My fear is that riding the Clinton legacy and steamrolling through the primaries with her fat Conglomerate-filled coffers, Hillary does get the nomination, and loses the general to some Republican’t. She’s such a divisive and hated figure to much of America, largely created by Rush Limpballs and friends granted (I don’t support her for the opposite reasons they don’t), that she could very well screw this whole thing up. If people would actually support who they think is the best candidate, and not who they’re TOLD is going to win, it is NOT a guarantee that she’s the nominee.
My entire adult life all I’ve ever heard is people bitching about all politicians being manipulative and untrustworthy. Yet still, they go out and vote for the exact people they always complain about, even when there are options, like there are in the Dem field. This Obama “not ready for primetime” B.S. is getting tiresome. I think new blood and ideas are exactly what we need and Edwards or Obama would bring that. After all, it’s looking they’re the only ones that will surely win the general election at this point, and that’s even with fairly low name recognition.
Don’t you want a Dem Prez in ‘08?
The “liberal” media and to a certain degree the GOP(since they do have the media presence) is picking Hillary for us. They want her to run because they think that she’ll be easy to trash and easy to beat. Besides, they’ve still got all that Arkansas Project infrastructure they can use. They’ll dredge it all back up again and the whole thing will be the Clenis and Vince Foster all over again. And lots of conservative”values voters” will show up JUST for The Spite Vote,to vote against her.

Agreed, AOB. With Hillary, most people “know” her – they either like her or really hate her. And I think the numbers on both sides are fairly even. There are very few people who will change their minds.
