(I’ll be on CNN at 7:30 pm ET — jh)
1. The Decider plans on vetoing the new energy bill, which calls for most utilities to produce 15 percent of their electricity from renewable sources:
The White House…said the tax bill unfairly singled out the oil industry.
[]
“This is really an exercise in sterile futility,” Mr. Bardon said, referring to the president’s veto threat, “because this bill isn’t going to anywhere.”
I don’t know which is more absurd, the notion of poor beleaguered oil companies or that the unitary executive has extended so far that Congress’s only responsibility now is to send the President bills that please him. Does anyone not named Bush take this shit seriously?
2. The Democrats are the party of financial restraint. Regarding “earmark” money:
The Democratic totals are less than half the record set by Republicans when they controlled Congress in 2005…
Which I guess makes the GOP the party of drunken sailors.
3. And meanwhile, in Afghanistan:
Nearly six years into the war, a third of Afghanistan’s provinces are in the grip of insurgents, a level far worse than it was from 2002 to 2005, the years immediately after the American-led invasion, when the Taliban were toppled and forced to retreat across the border into Pakistan.
With so little ability to keep his eye on the ball, George Bush should never be Commissioner of Baseball.

well, if he can’t keep his eyes on the ball, perhaps he should spend a *lot* of time on baseball fields… because, eventually, ya know…
“With so little ability to keep his eye on the ball, George Bush should never be Commissioner of Baseball.”
…there’s always the Arabian equestrian association that Brownie ran into the ground… or the think tank shrub plans to kick himself upstairs into in ‘09
what a clown!
BigMitch @ 2
Mitch, I went back to the long posting regarding Kelo and takings and I’ll reply in an email.
Didn’t want you to think no one read your musings.
(I’ll be on CNN at 7:30 pm ET — jh)
Prime Time!!
Hi, Jane!!!
I was going to send a contribution to Amnesty International, or to the World Wildlife Fund, but I’ve seen the light.
Yup, Exxon it is! Who’s with me? We all need to do our part.
Gosh, I hope this is tax-deductible, too!
Blub @ 6
don’t you have to be able to think to run a think tank?
Shrub acts as if he still is demanding his allowance from Poppy and Babs.
Elliott @ 12
You are picking nits….*g*
Yes, but on the positive side Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid managed to steer through a revision in FISA for the Dear Leader (may the sun never shine where the sun never shines upon him).
And Pelosi can still brag about how many bills the House has passed even if almost none of them pass the benign but strict scrutiny of the Leader (may hair never grow between his toes) and become law. Far, far better to take impeachment off the table and give good responsible men like Alberto Gonzales the power to wiretap Americans, sorry non-Americans, at home, sorry (damn these unpatriotic fingers) abroad.
(I’ll be on CNN at 7:30 pm ET — jh)
I don’t get cable, but hopefully, your segment will show up on Crooks and Liars.
N=1 @ 13
He’s getting way too many allowances, imo
Hey Jane!
Didn’t you learn that Judy Giuliani (and by extension, her sweet hubby Rudy) is just misunderstood?
It certainly changed my mind about the happy couple. Not.
jayt @ 9
Awesome! I’m gonna bail on the repugs like the rest of America!!! ;-)
Elliott @ 12
nah. George Gilder and his rethug Discovery Institute is a case in point.
As a former sailor and practicing drunk, I must object on behalf of drunks and sailors everywhere! ;~)
Sounds like GE is doing a heckova job in Iraq. Their entire electrical infrastructure is collapsing…some cities (what’s left of them) have been without water for 3 days, and Baghdad gets about 1 hour electricity per day….so, so sad for those people, and so, so despicable of our fear mongering leaders.
Elliott @ 12
Well you don’t have to have brains to work for one. See Brookings Institute and Heritage Foundation as two examples.
Got goopers on my teevee- seems like hundreds of em- an they’re all runnin for pres.
Commissioner! Just for one moment, imagine George as coach of your kids little league team…
no f***ing way.

Re: #1. What did the American people think they we’re going to get by electing Bush, an oil man, twice? Lower prices at the pump?
Re: #2 You can’t spend $12,000,000,000 a month, that’s per month! fighting wars and not raise taxes.
Re: #3 Bush didn’t learn much from his “I have looked into his heart” and “this is a man I can do ‘bidness’ with”, Putin, about what not to do in Afghanistan.
Petrocelli @ 35
(((Petro))) Shrub has certainly enriched his have-more base!!! *g*
the American people think

I hope Bush has his money invested firmly in the Dow…
Bush is an inside job.
OK someone needs to tell the CNN Newsmodel that the FISA thing isn’t just about “foreigners”. Good god.

I was trying to be sweet. My lady suggests I should do that. ;0)
Petrocelli @ 48
less than zero
Junior’s handlers must have thought he was perfect when they picked him, ex-prez son, not terribly bright but could act the good ol boy. I wonder if they ever imagined his spoiled brat ego might not be so easy to manage.
Eureka Springs @ 49
I hope so, but I doubt it. If they do, they are probably spying on it, and will yank their money out before it drops too far….d’oh…that would hasten the fall. Put options anyone?
Breaking: Jane is up right after the commercial break on CNN.
Eureka Springs @ 49
aren’t they consolidated, those two?
Petrocelli @ 50
Many of the ‘Usual Suspects’!!! *g*

George Bush was made for the Little League.
Mad Dogs @ 38
Is there anywhere to watch CNN live online?
jayt @ 60
George Bush was made for the Little League.
The Bush Leagues…!!! ;-O
Elliott @ 53
I know lots of wealthy, powerful who are disenchanted with Bush’s direction.
They are also waiting for the tide to turn against BushCo … keep at it, we’re almost there …
Hey Petro. Gonna watch Jane & split.
You and Tuttle have a spat?
I’m watching CNN and all I see is a weather report. WTF?
spurious @ 61
Supposed to have “Live Video” at http://www.cnn.com/video/ but it says that it isn’t available at the moment.
BigMitch @ 65
Weather is much more important than your civil rights. Get with it.
Dang, Mitch! 8-1, Bosox, in the bottom of the 8th! Hmmm… 7 games back??? ;-)
CTuttle @ 51
The meme mangling Malveaux is merely a mouthpiece for the manias of the madmen who make us miserable.
Did I miss it?
no Jane yet?
BigMitch @ 70
I don’t think do. CNN may have changed their programming.
Cujo359 @ 16
Was that supposed to be tonight???

Me & CT ? Fight ? Nope, we’re lovers, not fighters !!! *g*
… not each other’s lovers, mind you … *g*
CTuttle @ 68
I turned away from that game to see Jane, and all I am seeing is ads for Exubera, whatever that it.
Hi everyone…waiting for Jane to come on…
newtonusr @ 64
Moi and Toi??? Non, Non, Non…!!! ;-)
I know not many people here watch Fox News with Chris Wallace, but was that Bob Woodward at the far left of the panel near the end of the show? He said he just got back from Iraq and things are improving, I was kind of stunned.
Because electricty and water, I hear are not improving.
This might be a good question except we didn’t elect him. GORE won in 2000, remember? Then there were all the election shenanigans in Florida and the GOP fought tooth and nail not to recount the ballots and the Supreme Court, compliments of Sandra Day, gave the nod to the chimp.
In 2004 there was outright overt thuggery all over the map, most famously in Ohio. Vote switching, lost voter registration, secret lockdowns while votes were “counted”, vote suppression, voter intimidation, voting machines not available, not operating, or switching votes, Diebold etc. completely hackable; and voting machine “technicians” “examining” the hard drives of computers before there was a chance to recount; as well as a thoroughly corrupt Secretary of State who did everything he could – fuck what was legal – to twist the “election” to results he wanted.
Kerry was elected in 2004.
What this country didn’t do was elected the little chimp, ever.
What this country did do was lie down for this election rigging and general fucking over by these scum.
No Jane yet,saw a flash of her a few minutes ago, split screen with a right wing blogger. Said she was next and then went to the weather.
Montana is on fire,is Dr Dick ok?
BigMitch @ 65
Yeah, they did their typical “teaser” that Jane would be up next, but then switched the bait.
In MSM terminology, that isn’t called “lying” (nothing ever is), but instead called “holding eyeballs”.
CNN, right?
O/T -
Has Barry Bonds hit 756 mg yet?
Hugh @ 69
The punmeister would be proud!!! 8-)
Elliott @ 71
Nope.
Rick Sanchez is still on this network ?
Hasn’t he been belittled enough ?
BigMitch @ 65
That was like watching a faith based forecast. According to CNN we are melting away with 105 temps, which we are not, we are having a very normal if not slightly mild summer here.. What exactly is a heat index anyway?
Jane’s real name is Ahmed Mohamed??????
here with go with Jane!
here it comes…
Here we go.

Waiting…
How stupid is CNN’s audience?
They have to label the Liberal and Conservative guests ?
Ahhh, Jane. Forgive the implicit sexism of this remark, but seeing you on TV made me think, “Gosh, she’s quite fetching.”
Puttin’ on the Mitt.
BigMitch @ 87
Shh,behave.LOL.
It’s hot here and very humid. We have company. And Lahoma wants me to come out to the pool. And she’s upset about politics. This could be serious. Gawd. I look like a dried prune from so much time in the water.
Looking at this uppity liberal woman on CNN.
Mad Dogs @ 66
Thanks, MD. Damn.
Eureka Springs @ 86

FireDogLake… WooHoooo……….
What’s that I hear? Oh….
Silence.
Silence from our ‘Democrat’ majority on this issue. Guess they’re too damn busy
shaking downasking contributors during theirvacationrecess for money to…Well, what exactly? Mostly kissing Bush’s ring it appears.
Wait, wait! There is one politician out there talking about representing the people and not the money. Yeah…
Too bad he’s not in office at the moment. But you know….
We could change that.
Hate CNN!
Its making me gag.
Someone call JC Penny and tell them we found their underwear model hosting “CNN live Saturday.”
carolyn urban @ 79
Amen.
Petrocelli @ 96
No, the labels are for their stupid anchors.
Petrocelli @ 96
C’mon Petro it is geared for an American Audience!!! *g*
Jane is brilliant!!
Jane, you make MSM look even worse than usual, in every way !!!
smapdi @ 106
Does anyone else get the feeling that the CNN announcer likes Jane?
sangemon @ 110
Seconded…
Romney had an epiphany over stem cell research?
Petrocelli @ 96
You’re kidding, right? You’d certainly think that folks could figure that out for themselves if the guests have enough time to express themselves.
What the hell was that other guy talking about?
{{{Jane}}} you rocked!
Sure hope someone is recording this for us poor misbegotten folks who don’t get CNN…sniff…
Goopers spatterin cum all over themselves as they discuss the “FAIR TAX” sticky situation.
Romney seems to be the most like Reagan- except for when he’s the most like Quayle.
JPL @ 112
Why not? She is Hot, Hot, Hot!!! *g*
And Jane wins again! Another reich-wing National Review Dweeb fails to get a point when up against Jane!
Rock On!
Eureka Springs @ 114
Another one? Or is this old news?
Jane was great. Who will they send next week to go up against her?
There is never enough time, because they spend so much time talking about how much time there is not.
Rick comically puts himself in the same league as Jane … “We’re so passionate about politics.”
Good for you not to laugh mockingly at the MSM, Jane … I couldn’t have held back.
just watched your clip on CNN, Jane. You look terrific and handed whats-his-name his ass on EVERY single point of discussion.
That’s our girl!!!! Yeah!!!!
Great job Jane!!!
Man, Romney has a strange “walk”. He takes many, itty, bitty, steps.
LindaR @ 124
that’s why there are three bullet holes in my TV
Eureka Springs @ 114
yes… this is the line he is pushing. And it is stupider than anything else could be. “I was okay with abortion, until I found out that using blastocysts that were about to be thrown away might cure parkinson’s disease, alzheimer’s and spinal chord injury.”
Yet the fellow from The Natl Review was making all the smoke…
Jane was great but the subject of the interview & the anchor were moronic. Thanks Jane for raising the level of discourse.
Jane looks really, really good.
Cujo359 @ 122
I have no idea.
JPL @ 123
Thought it was a tame segment – of course, it’s one thing for stem cells to force an epiphany on abortion, but how does that make you an anti-gay bigot?
Nice work by Jane. Typical CNN: “I don’t want to put words in your mouth Jane, but…” [Proceeds to put words in Jane’s mouth] “… is that right Jane?” Jane gets half a word out before he’s trying to get her to stop talking so the National Review guy can respond to the words she didn’t actually get to say. Again though, nice work ignoring him and getting her points out anyway.
LS @ 127
tight undies
{{{{{{{{{{{ JANE }}}}}}}}}}
Up against a guy who was sucking a pacifier when Reagan was in office.
OK, I’m out. Glad to catch the lovely Jane, and now to dinner.
Toby Wollin @ 118
Please??
Rick Sanchez is CNN’s latest “boffo” news-mumbler.
As a stumbling mumbler of room temperature IQ, Rick Sanchez meets the ideal of CNN’s President Jonathan Klein when it comes to
entertainmentnews:“There ain’t gonna be any smart folks here! CNN – News for Dummies!”
Mutant Poodle @ 138
Bon Apetit!!!
JPL @ 123
… hopefully someone other than a single- cell creature …
Cujo359 @ 122
That was the National Review Dweeb’s talking point about Willard’s flip-floppery
Mutant Poodle @ 134
Oh you silly! Gay people can’t get preggers, so there are no aborted stem cells to worship, and then toss in the crapper! Teh Gays are a “snowflake free zone” ! Yes, indeed!
Elliott @ 136
Let’s not get started on Mormon underwear.
They should have had someone better up against Jane. That wasn’t even fair. She just demolished both of those lunkheads.
Yes, spurious, please…

Do they actually possess any multi-cellular critters, I thought they’re all slime!!! *g*

Since 9/11, after having Tom Clancy on, CNN anchors have been reluctant to let their guests speak for more than 3 seconds, which is why I only watch KO or TDS.
BigMitch @ 150
Ahh, the Beloveds…Go Yanks!
Jane Hamsher @ 152
I didn’t see you but I hair you looked good, no, great!
Jane Hamsher @ 152
Jane, you looked FABULOUS!
The hair was sharp! Nice cut, good color! Framed your face beautifully.
Jane Hamsher @ 152
Honey, 3 words to describe you … Fa.Bu.Lous !!!

BigMitch @ 150
A little ray of sunshine there Mitch??? ;-)
May I just say, I am pro Jane and I vote!
Jane Hamsher @ 152
See, #97, supra.
Jane Hamsher versus a neo-con propagandist for the dead tree National Lying Review. Also this articulate young wingnut lad, could he be an Iraq vet perhaps? Perhaps not. Jane versus chickenhawk. No contest.
GordonM @ 159
he is an odd duck
Mad Dogs @ 149
I think it’s simpler than that. His feet are connected to his brain.
Jane, that was brilliant, talking over Rick and the Gooper, although you probably thought Rick was asking you the question …
Toby Wollin @ 147
Sorry, I was asking too. Someday I may have to break down and get cable.
jane you looked great and so did your hair – of course i wanted you on longer….
BigMitch @ 150

I don’t know what you call that hair thing but this time it looked a little further back and looked better that way..
Don’t y’all love it when a pantene model looking woman asks about her hair? *s*
Jane Hamsher @ 152
Jane, You looked mahvalous!
“That IS what I’m saying Rick”
Great!

GordonM @ 169
Trust me. Nobody was rooting for Seattle more than I was.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 176
Only one thing I’ll assert in Barry’s defense; How many pitchers has he faced that did shoot up? Hmmm…
Jane!!!
BTW, when are we ever going to see you on the “Newshour with Jim Lehrer”? Or Charlie Rose’s show?
Places with elbow room for getting the message out.
I realize you have to take what you can get sometimes (CNN just as an example), but it would be nice to have you on places where discourse is not only allowed, but actually the purpose.
You probably need a professional booker to make stuff like that happen, but there’s gotta be at least one of them who is resident Firepuppy here.
Professional bookers, speak up!
twolf1 @ 183
thanks!
BigMitch @ 184
You’ve made that abundantly clear! ;-)
twolf1 @ 183
Oh THANK YOU, twolf!!!
“that Congress’s only responsibility now is to send the President bills that please him.”
I am very late to the discussion, but I love this in the set-up. Just let Bush direct the bills. This was exactly the position/arguement about FISA: why vote for something going nowhere? Well, how about to represent the people, or the constitution, or do a Congressional duty, or put up a fight. Since when did a veto threat become so powerful? I thought the fight last night sounded like “huff & puff and blow your house down.” And, it worked.
Mad Dogs @ 186
Ooh, ooh, how about Moyers??? That would be awesome!!!
Frank33 @ 163
I’d love to see Jane Vs. Amy Holmes in a debate.
Hey, hearing a progressive woman say choice IS MAINSTREAM on CNN, made my day.
CTuttle @ 185
My argument has always been that either no one uses drugs in baseball, or everyone uses the same drugs in the same dosage, at the same time. I favor the former. The latter it’s felt is too difficult to enforce. ;0)
Petrocelli @ 192
Ooh, pitted against Melanie Morgan, that would be golden!!!
link for video?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 176
That would be correct.
Somewhat OT: Turner Classic Movies has a sense of humor.
They’re showing Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Now to read what you’ve all been writing.
Tuttle you’re not the only Sox fan.
Jane, you looked swell. The hair looks great, the makeup understated (like you weren’t wearing much and didn’t need it). Very cool, calm and collected. And FDL.com repeated over and over. Get ready for the trolls, folks.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 194
Exactly, police it up and then lets talk about the records! Big Mac, Sammy, Barry, Jose,… Now, Pete Rose was seriously robbed!!!
CTuttle @ 185
Exactly my point as well. Barry has become the lightning rod for our anger towards Steroid use and all pro athletes, management & owners should share the blame.
yeah jane or christy or pach etc need to be booked on c rose or newshour so they can really give the progressive views – and its why we need a news outlet and quickly!!
JPL @ 199
Much to Mitch’s chagrin!!! *grin*
Actually a Lieberman vs. Hamsher debate would be good. If not that, Lahoma vs. Lieberman would work.
JPL @ 199
Although the Reds are first in mah heart, the sox make a good fall back team to cheer for…
TiredFed @ 200
Isn’t there a line in the first of the recent Superman movies, where Lois Lane says to Clark Kent, “Not many people are comfortable using the word ’swell’ these days.”
So is there any explanation for why Pelosi and Reid let themselves be rolled so easily?
It is very interesting to see how the minority party actually can set the agenda if it is organized and determined.
The Democrats seem unable to plan or game out situations except that they are able to imaging Republican attacks against them if they utter a peep.
I’m a die hard Oakland A’s fan.
I refuse to talk baseball on Firedoglake.
dakine01 @ 206
Ted Williams still played when I saw my first Sox game in Boston.
CTuttle @ 201
Pete was singled out, just as Barry is also being singled out … if the owners didn’t condone it, steroids would not be used.

Go Niners !!!!!
Petrocelli @ 212
Money Money Money think Cabaret
sangemon @ 210
Sorry, I thought we were discussing the politics of Baseball …
First, twolf, many thanks for doing the Youtube feed.
Jane -
You: professional, cool, intelligent, controlled, on your game. The “other guy” – jeeze, why does he make me think that what he really really really wanted to always do was be the sports guy on his local tv station? Sheesh. And the whole “epiphany on the stem cell” thing was from the playbook. If he’d been up against another conservative/repug commentator, perhaps he would have come up with something else, but because it was repug vs. liberal, then he had to be the almighty apologist.
To 210: Thanks, and me too. It was bad enough on evening news to hear even with the controversy, it is just so hard and such a great achievement…blah blah. Sounds like bush on Iraq, so hard, just forget the rest.
JPL @ 211
Awesome, I wasn’t around to see that, yet, I did see both; Clemens and Pedro pitch at Fenway!!! 8-)
Baseball. The great American pastime. For us the great American pastime does not include drugs and cheating.
Elliott @ 216
Exactly !
Petrocelli @ 217
No, no, no…it’s just that getting Yankee fans and Red Sox fans together is like getting DFHs and WIngnuts together at a barbeque.
Twain @ 215
Can’t you read, Twain???? CT said to “wait till it’s Football Season.”
Good evening, all;
I hope this is not out of bounds.
Would Jane Hamsher consider, someday, standing for an important national office, now somewhat in disgrace. Oklahoma? Would love to see Lahoma – Lieberman debate!
Jane @ 152, etc.
Didn’t notice hair, but could see into your soul. Very nice job.
BigMitch @ 224
Can’t wait. Love football.
correct petro – the owners condone it
sangemon @ 223
Beware, twixt the two shall meet…!!! ;-)
JPL @ 211
I was probably the only Reds fan within 150 miles of Boston in ‘75. I was living in southern NH and watched the sixth game in a little Italian club in Everett. I figure that I’m still alive ‘cuz they thought I had to be nuts to be cheering for the Reds that close to Fenway.
sangemon @ 223
Say, that’s a capital idea … *g*
Has Bush or the oil companies ever heard of a firewall? Passing this bill now would offer some protection to the oil companies later on if the Democrats get the presidency and keep control of congress.
After all the GOP can surely imagine what kind of a bill an Edwards presidency would try to pass. Sure not passing this bill now protects the oil industry short term but long term?
Long term when even more dead in the Iraq war for oil increases the American public’s anger at the oil companies heck we might be talking Nixon style price controls on oil.
That and Webb type limits on oil CEO pay.
Plus a lot more than a measl;y 16 billion going to alternate energy.
Petrocelli, I have been thinking about Cabaret a lot lately with all that has been going on in DC.
ahhh baseball is MY game – then football ;^)
My Grandmother always told me, kiddo, no matter how many wrongs you have, it will never make it right.
BigMitch @ 207
I’m just old-fashioned I guess.
Petrocelli @ 231
Traitor! :P (To who I’ll figure out at some point!)
Jane!
You were terrific.
Rick Sanchez is a CLOWN, with a clown voice. I can practically hear him honking his clown horn.
Who told him he should have the intonation of a slap-happy winger AM radio host on a supposed NEWS program, eh?
Well I guess when they give slap-happy (and racist, xen*ph*bic, and sexist to boot) winger AM radio hosts their own programs on CNN (see: Glen Beck), well there goes the whole fucking neighborhood.
Thanks, Jane, for being the one and only classy (and truthful!) entity on that program.
Mod note: Mrs. K8, see **
George Bush dines at LIHOP. I am now convinced that he would allow an attack to take place just to spite the Democrats. And my guess is that the Democratic congressional leadership knows it too.
TiredFed @ 236

plus you would have been pretty quiet when the game ended. but then, who cares what happened in game 7?
sangemon @ 223
You need to reverse one or the other (but not both) of those.

I know not many people here watch Fox News with Chris Wallace, but was that Bob Woodward at the far left of the panel near the end of the show? He said he just got back from Iraq and things are improving, I was kind of stunned.
Because electricity and water, I hear are not improving.
I wanted to repost this since, it was sort of lost in the fun of seeing {{Jane}} on CNN.
I never talk baseball here, but I am a Florida Democrat and an Orioles fan, a bit of a dry spell.

for those of you contemplating (and justifiably fearing) a visit to a Red State Republican over the August recess, why not try a visit to his or her likely opponent in the 2008 election? Myself, I have to gird myself for a visit with Barbara Mikulski, who inexplicably voted in favor of the Republican FISA bill in the Senate. I can’t for the life of me understand why, and she will have to explain it to me. She does have a brief explanation on her website, but that doesn’t cut it. Oh, and please let’s drop the inquiries into who wasn’t there – it doesn’t matter what wasn’t there, it only matters who voted yes.
TO Mitch at 258: How was that count put together? I did not see the show. And, what values could the Rs possible carry when they are outnumbered on everything else? That seems like an impossibility to me. Wrong on everything but values; go figure.

Cricket is good. You can tape the matches, play them on fast forward, and see the grass grow.
Thank you, Tiredfed for raising the issue of what we can do over the recess. After this weekend, I’m sure a lot of us are at the very least mentally exhausted. So, it’s a good thing(as St. Martha would say) to come up with some ideas for the “to do” list over the next couple of weeks. Our Rep Arcuri did his duty well and I’ve already sent him an email “thank you” note. I’m wondering if there is anything I can do for Eric Massa(who is running against Kuhl) in the district next door…hmmm, I wonder if he’s doing any events? Anyone in his district got a handle on that?
I have profound sympathy for those americans who are forced to endure american league baseball- where the PITCHERS DON’T EVEN HIT- and the managers never have to make the tough decision to leave em in or pull em for a pinch hitter- it’s only half a game.
Mitt Romney should fear Jane Hamsher.
She put it exactly right.

I was wondering if anyone thinks part of the reason for wanting to get the vote and the session over would be to have more clear time to work on the corruption & contempt issues? That crossed my mind, may be alittle optimistic. If anyone may be doing a full court press to go after Gonzo, may Rove, for lying and not appearing. Im sure w will be among his brush; no reason to say something snarky, I guess.
Dear Mod –
Got your note above (thanks for springing my comment!), but I still don’t understand.
The word “xen*ph*bic” (with letters instead of asterisks) was the apparent culprit.
But why? What word is it that I can’t see contained therein? I know you can’t write the word out, but can you otherwise describe it so I know what it is I’m avoiding in future?
Sorry to be so dense. I assume I’ll be slapping my forehead once you tell me….
And if anybody’s still interested long after the event, my original comment is up at #238 now for your reading pleasure. ;-)
Sigh. Just can’t seem to get with the flow, it seems.
BigMitch @ 287
Sounds like Rove’s math.
Petrocelli @ 274
no, petrocelli, that’s not how this system works. if it’s a moot point to stay, why bother? it would not have mattered if all the Dems stayed and voted in either chamber, the result would have been the same (and they know what the result is going to be in advance – you only see the public result). There were 60 yes votes in the Senate (and Mary Landrieu changed her vote twice, yes-no-yes), of which 14 (?) Dems joined. One was my Senator, Barbara Mikulski. I won’t bother asking my other Senator, Ben Cardin about it, since he did not vote yes. Same thing for my Congressman, Elijah Cummings. Leaving town (or otherwise being absent for a vote) is rarely an issue, and if the leadership thinks they need every last vote, they will stay and cast their vote. But how could it matter if they already had 60 votes in the Senate?
Apparently voters think goopers are incapable of dealing with any issues- except for MORALITY!
Somehow that makes me laugh my head off!!
Personally, I’d like to see them send Shrub no (as in zero) bills that he wants. For the next year and a half. (They need to remember that they’re a co-equal branch of governmetn, not his paid servants!)

Dick wants oil and he wants nuclear power. Nuke plants take 15 years or so to build so they won’t solve our energy problems today.
Also its been 30 years since we last approved a plant. Is there anyone even alive today in America who has experience walking steel building and inspecting a nuke plant. Is there anyone with real world experience, who knows what to look and knows what kind of problems to watch out for on a nuke job?
Sending green engineers who only read in books or worked on subpar safty standard free American nuke projects in foreign countries does not fill me with confidence. Heck maybe Dick will get Minnesota’s bridge inspectors to inspect the new nuclear plants he wants to build. Lax inspectors can save millions on a construction project, just look at the millions Bechtel made in Iraq.
Tell me where are we going to put the nuclear waste? Harry Reid does not want it in his state. Transporting the waste on trains is just asking for a terror attack.
But the current GOP solution of ignoring problems until something happens means that every nuke plant is storing their waste at the plant. Again were just asking for a terror attack or an accident to happen.
Renewable energy on the other hand doesn’t produce waste and the fuel is free!

To 292: Thanks. Me, too. You made me laugh right out loud. Do we really want the values of W, Rudy, Mitt, Hastert, Delay…or there’s not enough space. Or libby, shooter, etc. Thanks
The renewable energy is free from fuel costs- of course there are capital costs. One of the larger problems with most of the renewable energy sources is that they do not produce continuously- for example- solar panels don’t produce at night.. that means that unless you have a wankin big ol battery- you have to have a back up power supply capable of handling the grid after sundown- which multiplies the capital cost.
We still need these sources- but they won’t be EXLUSIVE sources.
TiredFed @ 293
Thanks buddy, I’ve learned a lot from your comments over these past few months. I would still like to ask the others why they were not able to convince the others to vote no … if only to understand how the leaders framed the wording. Heads should roll over this constant capitulation to the side that suffered heavy losses in the ‘06 election.
and for those of you looking for a silver lining in this recess, you might be interested to know that Nancy has the authority to refer contempt charges to the U.S. Attorney in D.C. Jane,
In that interview you did a great job, particularly in the composition of the picture.
The host was like zig-zaggy static, all over the place, so one sort of disregarded him after a minute. The other guy was about as interesting and as smart as bean dip. (And I’m probably being very unfair to bean dip.)
You do a great job of being calm and staying still while being on topic, and on top of things.
That’s gotta be hard to do.

rwcole — I am no expert on Global Warming and alternative energy. But if I had to bet, this is the way I would go:
The threat of global warming is under-estimated.
The ability of Americans and others to come up with technological fixes, once the problem is acknowledged widely is also under-estimated.

Thanks! Jane won!
Besides knowing her stuff, Jane did some very media-savvy things. The verbal sparring on such shows is a bit like basketball: position is everything. There was a point where Rick was seeking to get a quick confirmation from Jane after re-stating her position, aiming to hand off to the “Conservative” for a response. But Jane seized verbal position smoothly like an expert, and got an extra 30 seconds to underscore her point of view. It was the verbal equivalent of intercepting a pass. Smoothly and expertly done, Jane!

rwcole @ 301
What is going on right now is a battle by current large energy companies to retain centralized control of energy production. That’s the only way–in a deregulated market–that they can control the process, and therefore, profit margins.
Distribution of energy is an expensive–in both energy and money–part of the process. Decentralization reduces those costs, but, also, takes pricing control out of the hands of the central suppliers.
Yes, if you’re a commercial supplier with solar, you’d need high storage capacity (maybe not a battery, but, rather, pumped storage). But, in a decentralized scheme, all those things that get very big because of economy of scale thinking suddenly get small again. :)
Perhaps they should be called Red Dogs.

Tantra = “Such a Night.” :)
CTuttle @ 318
one might use a different term but, yes, fortitude is what it would take. shouldn’t the 3rd in line of succession have such?
Mitch- I’ll buy your assumptions..
I think the underlying battle is about coal–it’s not goin away in the next fifty years like oil. Some have invested billions in buying mines and related facilities- they anticipate a huge increase in coal production as oil prices increase–(they may thus support continued disruption of production in Iraq) they are pushing the “hydrogen” age- cause they figure that hydrogen would be produced by using coal…the HATE the renewable alternatives that might make their investment worth less.
Would love to see a recap of who has bought coal mines in the last ten years AND donated heavily to the Clusterfuck campaign.

Well actually it’s probably more a matter of natural gas prices than crude prices.. natural gas burns cleanly–coal is dirty as hell- still coal is already used to produce a large portion of our electricity- as natural gas prices increase–the coal industry expects to take over a larger and larger share of the market- and we are up to our asses in coal.

Use the renewable energy when we have it (sun is out, wind blowing) to make hydrogen out of water which can be stored and used to power fuel cells. The process is considred expensive and uses more energy than it makes.
But I wonder how what the numbers would be like if the energy were free and polution costs were factored in?
If we just decrease the number of kids with asthma 50 % because of lower polution, and factor in the cost for asthma medication for those kids during their lifetimes then I think the numbers would move in our favor.
What other diseases have air polution as a trigger, contributing factor or direct cause?

Thanks for answering my question!
Although it’s still really a mystery to me. Why would wingers like that word? It’s a complaint ABOUT wingers, isn’t it?
And why spammers would like the word is even stranger still (to me).
How many other words are there which will snag innocuous comments and which are not at all predictable (so that I could avoid using them)?
Sorry — this is not meant at all as a complaint about moderation. Moderation is the price we pay to have a nice civilized space to have these discussions, which to me are a lifeline to my sanity.
I just wish a person like me who wants to be a good civic citizen on message boards could figure out how to “do the right thing.”

No to an “inside FDL joke”. It is just one of those typical American shortcuts/generalizations to categorizing the real power-brokers of this nation.
That it is “somewhat” accurate at times does not absolve it from unfairly tarnishing many who don’t deserve the implied negative appellation.
Ned Lamont is a “rich white guy” and one of many sterling examples that don’t deserve the put-down.
That said, there are many who do, and have done so for generations. Junya is but the most recent egregious (forgive my taking your name in vain, EG!) example.

Well, sort of. One also has to factor in the costs of CO2 sequestration, if there’s to be any attention to climate change. Right now, the only means of doing that is pressure injection into old limestone/sandstone oil fields in the hopes that the CO2 is reabsorbed and becomes part of the rock. And, it takes one big old oil field to accommodate the output of one big power plant. It’s also expensive, and installed cost is the great high god of the energy industry (that’s why nuclear operators are desperate for subsidies and loan guarantees).
Coal may be a necessary stopgap measure, but it’s not going to be a panacea, and the operators will fight sequestration as hard or harder than they have new rules on other emissions.
Makes much more sense to put new capacity money into technologies that don’t have attached ongoing costs.
