I got your back ! *g*
Nicely done, CT !
Newtonusr, if you’re still around, who else did I meet? Redshift.
Thanks Teddy (big smiles)
did someone let downstairs know?
I let them know downstairs, Teddy!
thanks ct
Woo Hoo, I think I’m in double digits now for Zeds!!!
Have any of you read the letter that Pelosi sent to Conyers?
EPU’d:
CTuttle,
No we didn’t. We served the people of the USA, the US Constitution and our comrades. In December, 1966, a group of warrant officers in my aviation company burnt the pictures of the SecDef and Sec of the Army in a little bonfire behind our barracks at Ft. Lewis. The CO had the enlisted men stand guard duty on the new set of chain-of-command pictures in the hall outside the company office until somebody was supposed to come forward to turn in the offenders. We didn’t.
But you know that! We’re still serving this crazy country.
I let them know, Suzanne, with a beautiful embedded link. Thank you TexB!
Had to do control v.
Welcome home, TSF.
TRex called and asked that I let folks know he is safely back in the state of GA. He’s looking forward to getting his computer back in the morning and seeing everyone tomorrow night.
RBG @ 13
Excellent news - thanks for passing that on, RBG.
Ed*ard Teller @ 11
True! One can be a romantic couldn’t they??? :-)
CTuttle @ 9
hmmmmm CT do you have a zed necklace yet???
Loo Hoo. @ 12
Nicely done link!
lolo @ 16
(((lolo))) Howzit!!! Long time…!!!
ET—saw your comment and replied on an earlier thread. Are you accessing your regular email while you’re “down south”?
LooHoo, glad to see tex’s lessons paid off. Is your facebook page gonna get all fancy smancy now with pictures? (grin)
WaPo take on YK, with an FDL shoutout.
Check out this video (h/t TPM) of Ron Paul at the GOP debates. Paul is slamming the Iraq war and advocating for withdrawal.
But what I found hilarious is that Romney is in the background the whole time trying to interrupt Paul by repeating “Has he forgotten about 9/11?!” while trying to look incredulous.
I mean, I know that’s just Romney’s shtick, but it was so over the top and inappropriate in this context it was hard to believe. What a cartoon of a man.
at facebook FDL, i opened a discussion topic on presidential candidates.
just for fun.
Loo Hoo. @ 4
Hi again. Remember that I know only about the FDL Breakfast, as I was on the ground for less than a day…
Christy, Lew Koch, Swopa, KatyMine, Digby, Jane, egregious, TexB, Teddy, Pach, RevDeb, and other luminaries were there for the breakfast. Who you met depends on how long you stayed. But no Redshift…
RBG @ 19
I’m stealing a WiFi signal from some auto shop near my mom’s place. I can get, but can’t send e-mail.
While I was taking the kids to SeaTac so they can get back to work tomorrow in Anchorage, Ms. ET and my sister set up Wednesday at sis’s house for my sis’s B’day dinner, so I’m thinking Thursday instead, for a Seattle firepup meetup. Trying to get oscarsmom on the phone. things come undone is interested too, so - I’m working on it.
VictorLaszlo @ 22
They are all trying (too hard) for their “Mr Green I paid for this microphone” moment that St Ronnie got in New Hampshire when all the GOP candidates showed up to debate him and GHWB. None of them even have Ronnie’s charm, which isn’t saying much.
“…the rock stars are mostly men, and many women bloggers complain of sexism and harassment in the blogosphere.” Are you kidding me! If I even thought a chauvinistic thought I would be flailed here at the Lake!!! The star bloggers are female, no offense Teddy and TRex, but, jeez louiseez!!!
VictorLaszlo @ 22
GOP culture has gotten so used to interrupting others. Not only was he breaking the 11th Commandment, he was auditioning for Bill O’Reilly’s job!
TeddySanFran @ 21
Maybe that’s true, but to me the “blogosphere” is dominated by women. This place, Taylor’s site, Marcy’s, and even most of the local blogs I read seem to be predominately run or written by women.
Cujjo359 @ 29
Maybe we need a “MyBlogosphere” key on our computers. MyBlogosphere tends to the distaff as well….
Gonzo is pushing the Protecting Children in the 21st Century act. I think I would have more confidence in Gonzo if he went after Ex House of Representives member Mark Foley.
After all isn’t comunicating by email with a kid you want to abuse who is across state lines automaticaly a federal crime?
The state of Florida in what has to be the slowest investigation of child abuse ever still hasn’t pressed charges.
Gonzo’s law is supposed to target online predators is his postion that we need this law because for some legal reason I can’t comprehend he can’t charge Foley?
Hi CT! I am doing just fine. I am really enjoying all the stories and pics of the weekend. How is it in the islands tonight?
TeddySanFran @ 21
Sounds to me like Ana Marie Cox was whining about her new work environment to someone….
To continue a subject from the previous thread, I posted a copy of the letter Speaker Pelosi wrote to Conyers and Silvestre regarding fixing the FISA mess at my blog.
Hopefully, others will do the same, so perhaps there will be more pressure for them to actually do something when they get back.
lolo @ 32
Cool and breezy for an August Nite!!!
Ed*ard Teller @ 25
Left my number on your regular mail as well as Facebook. Hopefully you can get one or both of them.
TeddySanFran @ 30
For me, that’s the bookmarks toolbar.
Cujjo359 @ 34
Hate to say it, but their opportunity to do something was Saturday.
It’s too late now.
montag @ 38
Hey Montag, please elaborate … to us lesser mortals, her letters insinuates that Conyers can recommend changes before the 6 months are over.
TeddySanFran @ 21
Hmmmmm. Nine out of ten times that I see a progressive blogger on TV it’s a woman, and they do a superb job.
Cujjo359 @ 37
Same here! I’ve a lengthy list, predominately female run sites! Hmmm… I certainly don’t question my masculinity!!!
Petrocelli @ 39
Insinuation is nothing more than a wish. What Bush wanted is now law. The Dems can’t get a veto-proof majority on any changes, or anything else Bush doesn’t want.
So, the only way to have driven a stake through the heart of this was to vote it down this past Saturday.
It’s not rocket science.
A boy who said he was also molested by the same priest who molested Mark Foley has settled with the Catholic Church already, but Foley still hasn’t even been charged let alone gone to trial.
Is the government waiting for the statue of limitations to run out on this case? Or has a private settlement already been made and is the state of Florida just pretending to investigate until everyone forgets?
Maybe they will reveal the settlement after the Presidential election perhaps?
Petrocelli @ 39
The House approved the Senate’s version, no conference committee, straight to Shrub’s desk for signing!!!
montag @ 38
Unfortunately, you’re probably right, but I don’t think we can give up on this. It’s too important.
I really would like to someday be able to think that the Congressional leadership is capable of thinking two steps ahead.
Follow the money you say?
HuffPo has FundRace 2008 and this article
{{{RGB}}} and the fdl mods.
BTW, the WaPo article sorta sucks. I’m getting glad I didn’t go to YKdeux, as much as I’d wanted to. So much to do, so many progressives to scout out, question, support, fund and elect. So much attention lost on the beauty contest of the 2008 presidential election.
Having just finished watching the Iowa GOP debate, I’m glad our candidates have a collective IQ advantage over their candidates of about 700 or 800 points, but we need to concentrate on increasing our advantage in the House by 25-30 seats, in the Senate by as many as we can get. But whomever among the Dems scores the WH, that person will forget we - the netroots - exist the moment the election results are posted. The House and Senate victors won’t.
Cujjo359 @ 45
Okay, don’t give up on it. But, forty-one Dems did, and that was enough.
And, no, they aren’t thinking two steps ahead. After six and a half years of this nonsense, that much ought to be apparent. The time to think ahead was a long time ago, I’m afraid.
CTuttle @ 41
“Hello, my masculinitiy?”
“hi there, you got a minute?”
“yeah? oh yeah, see, i got a few questions, see?”
“What?
“Hello? Hello? ….
he hung up!
(women are better than men)
Well, Firepups, one and all, I bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!! *g*
Cujjo359 @ 45
I’m afraid that train has left the station. Evidence: neither Reid nor Schumer would show up at YKos for the Leadership Forum, even though the Senate had recessed, thus the push for the House to pass the identical bill. I think they both knew Chicago was full of folks who knew exactly how they’d rolled over for the Bush Crime Family. That’s why they didn’t show up.
CTuttle @ 44
What’s the purpose of her letter, CT … have you read it ?
Cujjo359 @ 45
Thing one: Congress can pass a law upon its return to amend FISA, and write the AG out of warrant granting authority. Indeed, they had better do so, because otherwise, it strikes this pup as blatantly unconstitutional.
The MSM was reporting that the only chance for defeating the White House FISA bill was in the Senate, and once it passed there, House approval was expected. I don’t know why this was so, or why we were surprised when it turned out as predicted.
In truth, we really have no idea what the bill says, and therefore, we don’t know the extent to which our rights have been compromised. However, if this makes it harder to impeach the president (by undermining the argument that what he did re: FISA was an unacceptable breach of our civil rights) well, then, we’ve been fucked.
CTuttle @ 50
Good night CT … Good night everyone, I’m turning in as well …
Suzanne @ 20
Well, TexB does it so fast I can’t follow her. May have to break out the manual…I hate manuals.
190,000 AK-47 assault rifles gone missing in Iraq.
Petrocelli @ 52
It was the agreement that they hammered out with McConnell, that Shrub then torpedoed!!! Aloha Oe!!! *g*
I simply don’t believe very much of what I read or hear anymore.
Gonzo is concerned about “protecting children”? I wouldn’t let him around my sons and they’re way tall.
There’s a terror scare? Please.
Hire back the gay linguists, do something concrete instead of threatening us.
That’s it for me tonight, folks. Catch ya’ll tomorrow nite, same bat time, same bat channel.
newtonusr @ 24
I didn’t really get to meet Jane and Pach…we all need goals, right? Digby I saw one evening and I said hi. She gave me a hug!
Hey, ‘pups, I’m fading fast and not unpacked!
I will see you hereabouts tomorrow sometime….
BigMitch @ 53
I’ve read the conformed, amended bill, and we’ve been fucked–maybe not precisely in the way you describe, but, fucked, nevertheless.
Look, no one’s taking this to court, because no one can establish standing in this. It lets Bush do whatever the hell he wants, so, whatever was illegal before has the patina now of legality. Anyone who wants to get this past the DC courts’ right-wing judges better be holding god’s right hand when doing so, because this change in law isn’t going to help their case.
TeddySanFran @ 61
good night TSF
TeddySanFran @ 56
Plus 80,000 handguns. That’s more than a quarter million personal weapons in a country of 25,000,000, before 6 or 8 million fled.
Question: In olden days AK-47s were mostly Russian or Chinese. Who manufactured the 570,000 AK-47s we distributed in Iraq, of which 1/3 went missing?
The MainStream Media went after Bill Clinton pretty hard calling for his impeachment.
Senator Vitter who also called for Bill to leave is getting a pass from the media for sleeping with whores.
Gonzo wants to protect kids from online predators but can’t seem to be bothered to charge Mark Foley. Where oh where is Maureen Dowd with the catty column about how Republicans want to police the bedroom except if it means charging a Republican with a crime?
me too.
i’m out.
Here’s a story I remembered about our weapons showing up in markets in Iraq:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12.....mp;emc=rss
BigMitch @ 64
As I recall, the bulk of them were produced in the Czech Republic, although one could probably find some produced in Poland,Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania, as well. Truth is, anyone can make them. The licenses are everywhere. Ammunition seems to come mostly from the Czech.
things come undone,
Did you see that Thursday looks better for a Seattle FDL get-together? - #25 above.
Margot @ 67
Thought I remembered this. From the article:
Anyone who has spent much time working for the Defense Dept. in most capacities is probably astonished at this. They didn’t even record the serial numbers. Places I’ve worked tracked things by serial number if they were worth more than $100 or so, no matter what they were. Yet these folks didn’t even record the numbers when they bought them. (On a bulk order like that nowadays, it’s usually possible to get a list of the serial numbers in some electronic format - why wasn’t that done?)
Arrgh.
When the pain is deep enough and shared broad enough there will be change so until then we just have to work to prepare for those days (that`s what the vanguard does)
Hard to admit but “the truth shall make you free” ya know
“Every once in a while, you’ve got to do something hard, do something you’re not comfortable with. A person needs a gut check.” - Corporal Chad Ritchie, U.S.M.C.
Cujjo359 @ 70
Because they didn’t want them traced, maybe?
Anyone supporting or giving aid to Iraq can now get their assets and property taken away without a trial. Thanks to Bush’s Presidential decree which I’m pretty sure is unconsitiutional.
Bush just issued another one just like it involving Lebanon.
I’m betting Pakistan is next the neocons thought they could remake the Middle East by using a show of force.
At this rate the Axis of Evil might have enough members to form a soccer team before Bush gets out of office.
Was it Confucius or Mencius who said something about an emperor who was so good when he invaded the south the barbarians in the north complained about why he didn’t invade them first?
Kim Jong il must be looking at Iran and Syria suddenly being surounded by new friends and asking why doesn’t the BAD Chimperor try invading his country.
montag @ 72
A curious desire when you’re supposedly trying to build a society based on the rule of law.
Ed*ard Teller @ 69
yes I just read it
Cujjo359 @ 74
Not if you’re actually trying to build enough chaos to break the country into pieces, each of which is easier to manipulate with regard to oil management and in denying each security from the other, thus requiring the help of an umbrella force.
Divide and conquer.
Arlen Specter wants immigrants to be able to stay with their families, but he sure doesn’t like the idea of them voting. Wonder why not?
Give these people the company of their spouses and minor children and consider other indicators of citizenship short of the right to vote (which was always the dealbreaker).
WaPo
montag @ 76
Actually, I suspect there are many possible explanations for such a “policy”. I’m just noting the irony.
Cujjo359 @ 74
Some possibilities: (1) The NRA learned how to say in Arabic, “Iraq wasn’t won with a registered gun.” They plastered the place with posters saying this, and the U.S. Army figured that this is what the people wanted.
(2) They weren’t exactly “trying to build a society based on the rule of law.” Such a society would be able to get their shit together and export oil, which, according to the only law these crooks obey — the law of supply and demand — would mean that prices for oil would fall. Good for America. Not so good for people who sell oil. Guess who Bush cares about.
(3) It’s such total and obvious bullshit that they didn’t record the serial numbers that the only reason for even thinking it’s true would be that you assumed that nobody would tell a lie so audacious. If so, you haven’t been paying attention.
Loo Hoo. @ 77
Wage slaves can’t vote or else they will demand things like a minuim wage and healthcare.
Cujjo359 @ 78
I think it’s long past the ironic stage…. When Bremer dissolved the army and the police and went on a Ba’athist purge, it was readily apparent what they were up to. What they tell us about what they’re doing is not irony–it’s propaganda. !
Cujjo359 @ 34
And, here’s the money line:
So far, it is not at all clear what the NSA can’t do that they need to, and why. The stuff about foreign-to-foreign calls getting routed through the U.S. sounds like double talk.
wigwam @ 82
Of course, it’s double-talk. Whatever they needed, they could have gotten through the FISA court, from day one, with a warrant.
They don’t want to get warrants, for reasons yet unknown, and which they’re hell-bent not to reveal.
montag @ 42
That or we flog the fools that voted for this so badly now that they’ll cry for their mommies when this damn thing sunsets in six months. They should be verbally and morally brutalized. They gave away the freedoms that our troops (think they) are fighting to save.
Recall, they and the President took an oath to protect the constitution, and in giving away our constitutionally guaranteed liberties, they failed to uphold their oath of office.
I also nominate the Judds. But I don’t know how anyone would decide which team worked harder. Wynona Judd is a monster talent, and her mom wasn’t too shabby, although she was no Judy Garland.
But I’ll dedicate this one to TSF, Siun, and all the FDL’ers who got bummed out in Chicago.

Petrocelli @ 10
I did. I just wish that she’d had that communication with Conyers BEFORE they rushed through the Republican bill last Saturday!

Questions for Gonzo’s replacement
Do you have any principles? Would you quit your job if you were asked to do something that violated your principles?
Then we hit the new Nominee with all the hypothetical questions GOP nomines like Gonzo, Alieto, and Roberts have been lying about.
If they refuse to answer or try to give a non answer we say we can’t confirm another Gonzo.
If they answer in a way pleasing to us we tell them if we find out they lied we will rescind our vote.
I think we can provisionaly confirm a nominee conditionaly to see if he works out I don’t see anything saying we can’t in the Constitution.
We approve the nominee but we force Bush to fight in court with the clock running on his presidency to fight for full confirmation of his nominees.
We can show Bush that we can play with the gray areas of the Consititution where powers are not expressly spelled out or forbiden too!
Hopefuly then he will stop playing games with the Consitution and Presidential signing statements.
wigwam @ 84
Sure, that’s exactly what they did. The only fix is finding better to run against them, win, and get the toads out of office.
But, for now, no, don’t expect any miracles. Bush successfully intimidated them. That means he can do it again… and again… and again.
BigMitch @ 53
This is only marginally true, since an impeachment does not have to be based on criminal behavior– it can be based on malfeasance or misfeasance. Besides, they have committed so many high crimes and misdemeanors, as well as conspiracies to commit thereof, that there is plenty left to work with. What is needed is a will to work with the evidence already in hand. Are the Democrats vertebrates, or jellyfish?
Bob in HI
Well, during the week I took in a lot of words and video from Yearly Kos- Second Coming. It was quite a display of many intricate puzzle pieces. A lot of blog heavies…. wow I mean the line of blog celebs was impressive.
However, now that the masses have gone back to the life of an indifferent American paycheck to paycheck existence tetering on the edge of utter social obscurity…
well I think the mask of denial is fading and everyone is trying hard… so hard not to conclude the inevitable.
Blog Universe is just the New Millenium version of CB Radio. “Breaker One Niner…. come back. What’s your 20 cowboy?”
Hey You @ 90
Guess it’s time for you to go back to your base station and your scanner, then, eh?
Cheers.

southeast Michigan, bend over. Nardelli will drive.
anybody still owning this pig, dump it fast (i don’t, but if i shorted stocks, which also i don’t, i would put money on it).
one final thing at the beginning of a week following a WTF:
remember what Howard Dean said. we especially need this now.
we must continue to change the Democratic Party.
Blue Dogs can go suck eggs. pick them off one by one (where this is possible).
keep nailing Republicans.
take no prisoners.
never give up. we’re really just getting started.
Mornin’ all!
Good morning. Just waiting for the coffee to finish perking.
Good morning, pups. The NYT has Cohen, Kristof and Krugman today. Cohen says French president Sarkozy is turning tradition upside down by vacationing in America, Kristof has a plan for W about what to do about Darfur, and Krugman writes about “That Substance Thing,” and what candidates say about policy tells us about them. (Hint — he’s concerned about Hillary.)
