"NYC Peace March 4/19/06"

The last peace rally I attended in LA had a group of co-ed cheerleaders doing anti-War cheers and formations. They were good and were the hit of the rally. Now I’ve heard some opinions that protest marches should be somber affairs. It kind of depends on what the march is about, but believe me, I’ve been to some real snooze fests that were completely uninspiring. You know me…"put it to a beat."
But there are groups of funsters popping up all over the country and the world at rallies, festivals, parades and public spaces called Honkers . They’re loose horn and drum marching bands. They’re colorful, a little bit gypsy, little bit arty, and a little bit prankster. From honkfest.org:
Every one of these bands has a unique sense of humor to complement their sound, as they mock and discredit the roots of hatred and injustice through the whimsical act of making music together. The result is a spectacle that is radical and subversive without being militant or sanctimonious.
Now I know that these bands aren’t as good as the street bands in New Orleans (duh), but that is obviously not the point here:
All of these bands are less than a decade old, born in reaction to the fatalism and indifference that has gripped the advanced industrialized democracies.
Well, the Honk bands are organizing and have even had their first national festival, (convention if you will) last year and are following up with another in October at Davis Square in Somerville, Mass.
There is a website with more info and a MySpace page with numerous Honk band links.
I’m off to Lollapalooza so I won’t be in comments, but the playlist this week consists of songs from bands that will play at Lolla. Enjoy.

Zed!
zed, I’m back
OC! Congrats on the Zed
Nice work, O.C.
That video Donita found on MySpace has been an earworm in my skull since last night.
TRex gets a shout out on Tucker?????
BigMitch @ 6
Damn I wish I had cable TV.
BigMitch @ 6
I heard that too…
(snig*er)
I’m streaming the convention.. If anybody else is watching can you help me put names to faces?
BigMitch @ 6
get out!
BigMitch @ 6
Tell more, please.
Some guy from Politico is talking about YKos, and he said that it is interesting for bloggers to meet people they know only by handles. And, it’s like “Hi Trex! How are you?”
Mike Allen was saying that people put their screen names on their name tags and he mentioned TRex as an example.
BigMitch @ 11
How cool. Booman of Booman Tribune sat at a table with simon and allen from Politico. He has a funny commentary on it.
Am I the only person who thinks that when MSNBC features an evening lineup described as “Double Lock-ups, with a side of ‘To catch a Preditor’” it is a clear sign of the apocolypse approaching?
Did Tucker have an extra quaalude today?
BigMitch @ 15
he’s not right, is he…
CSpan reporting FISA still up in the air. Several different proposals.
Noted the court decision in Jan. ACLU says don’t rush. Sunset 6 mos. Revisit…then permanent changes.
HOuse? suspended rule…go forward on this today.
Senate: needs R approval to move fwd. –>> tomorrow/next week - via Reid.
Just finetune the agreement.?!
OldCoastie @ 13
Better keep T unaware, it’ll swell his already enlarged skull!!! My Senator’s office just called me, I thanked them for calling and railed ‘em about Inherent Contempt and the need for a skeleton crew to ward of any recess appointments! They’re worried about the recess appt’s but, laughed about the Inherent Contempt process! (I was not amused!) :-(
Hey Fini!
FORMER BAND GEEKS of AMERICA UNITE!
I love this.
Thought I might keep MY comment ON-TOPIC, for once. Hint.
“As they mock and discredit the roots of hatred
and injustice.”
Remember too, the traditional role of the Court
Jester. Those medieval Kings and Queens were no
doubt not amused. But that particular ‘office’
was deemed necessary.
jacqrat @ 19
LOL I knew you would dig this week’s vids.
“Here’s to the Man and his bombs his bomb his bombs, here’s to the Man and his muthafuckin wargames”
OldCoastie @ 17
brain damage from too much adolescent alcohol abuse when he was at Deerfield
R-Sen. Kit Bond throwing McConnell under the bus.
Honk!

I like Josh Marshall’s frame:
Bush: My Spy Chief is Soft on Terror
Tucker on a rant against accountability.
Loiterer @ 21
Absolutely spot-on, Loiterer. Here’s to lots more participatory art and activism to change the status quo.
Senator Bond, why would terrorists strike the Capitol when Congress is on recess?
that’s my question anyway.
BigMitch @ 26
Well sure, because it pairs so nicely with that meme about the facts having a well known liberal bias.
OldCoastie @ 29
Maybe they know Bush is going to order them to stay.
Rachel Maddow on Air America is listing 20 bridges with WORSE ratings AND more traffic than Minneapolis’ bridge. All across the land including NJ and NY.
McConnell says the Democrats have managed to create the lowest approval rating for Congress ever.
Bwahahahha…Loser.
I wonder why Tucker has come to Boston? He’s clear that the Democrats have politicized the fall of the Minnesota bridge. He said that we should face it that sometimes bad things just happen.
I guess he’s decided to talk about those frivolous bridge inspections in front of the Big Dig that recently collapsed and killed a woman on her way to the airport.
Republicans - trickle down bridge safety.
I have my disagreements with Ed Shultz but he sure knows how to punch *ucker in the head (metaphorically speaking)
If you haven’t seen it already, rent or buy THE LIVES OF OTHERS when it comes out on DVD August 21st. That’s where we are heading as a nation.
fdl reader @ 32
The House just passed a 250 Mil. emergency appropriation bill for the Minn. bridge! Isn’t that the same amount that Stevens earmarked for the Bridge to Nowhere? ;-)
Hip, hipster progressive activists, the early years.
(((((((Jacqrat)))))))))
Millineryman @ 39
Hi, Jeff! How’s your embouchure hangin’?
It’s Friday night! And this is the night we rock.
From me to Lahoma. Lets just do it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....s&NR=1
jacqrat @ 28
I’m just saying we need more ‘Court Jesters’.
Jon Stewart may qualify. In Britain there is
a national sport played by media and others.
It’s called: ‘Tear the politicians to pieces’.
It is non-violent, humorous and eventually
effects a semblance of balance in perception - if not actuality.
jacqrat @ 40
God I wish I was punaise at time like this. Insert something witty here___________.
Uh oh, Boehner privileged resolution. Can’t be good.
its hot and fucker carlson is trying my patience!
jacqrat @ 37
That was a cool trailer, but this was one of the links they displayed after the trailer was done playing for some reason. Too effing funny!
Nasty stuff to be read into the record, should set off some serious fireworks. These should be some pretty good Friday Fights.
My attitude is that a protest is a form of street theater. One of the primary goals of any protest is to get attention. You don’t necessarily get attention by being somber. It helps to get “theatrical.”
But the thing is, whatever your method of getting attention, you don’t want it to clash with your message. Otherwise you make it easy for your opponents to mock your message. Code Pink often skates on thin ice, in this regard.
One bit of street theater that worked well last year, at least during the primaries, was “The Kiss” float in Connecticut, a giant paper mache mockup of Lieberman’s embrace of Bush.
Music, of course, is a good way to attract attention. What good is a parade without a band? Isn’t a parade, after all, a kind of demonstration? Maybe not a protest demonstration, but it’s not really much different. But the music needs to support the message.
Bob in HI
I think protests should be fun. I wanna see 10 guys dressed with the Bush and Cheney plastic masks while wearing devils suits. I wanna see Uncle Sam on stilts.
Basically, I wanna see parade elements more so than anarchist elements. Leave the anarchy elements to Europe.
Hmmm. @ 44
Boehner is a total Proctologist’s dream, is he not?
So, last nights ‘misunderstanding’ in the House is blowing up agin?
Select Committee. Not good.
fdl reader @ 50
Wha-huh? What’d I miss?
missed the repug walkout last night - but didnt they do all kinds of shit to dems when they had congress? this morning they all railed on dems actions - andddddddddddd……. looks like karma to me….
nonplussed @ 49
Spew alert..
“Disenfranchisement.” “Voting rights.” “Subpoena.” Really not good.
OMFG: Boehner thinks the R’s still have a majority!!!!
or - what goes around comes around….
Boehner is pearl-clutching…
Sounds like someone need to done a Boehner mask and wear a pile of bull shit costume.
fdl reader @ 57
sometimes it seems like they still do
So what’s up with the missing electronic voting record, and gosh, ain’t it a coincidence that the electronic voting system had t be taken offline earlier today because it failed?
Hmmm.
The AG Bill?!!! WTF??? :~(
Boehner is accusing the D’s of a “pattern of abuse” regarding House rules for the PAST SEVEN MONTHS in the HOUSE!!!!!! Unfair! UnParliamentary! Pattern of Activity continuiing TODAY!
ARRRRRRGGGHHHHHHH!
We do need a Honk Band on the Floor NOW!
Honyer giving the evil eye to Boehner.
Steny looks pissed.
So George… you want to keep us in town. Okaaay.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....mp;search=
OldCoastie @ 59
Yes those Republican men love clutching their own pearls, and other men’s as well, as long as the wife doesn’t know.
Eureka Springs @ 65
I like Steny when he’s pissed.
Steny is calling them out about the 3-hour vote that DeLay engineered that was “on 60 Minutes” this past weekend. Ayup. Go Steny.
Steny: “I feel your pain.”
Pearls? Grasping at straws, more like. What’s being postponed by this motion (chair called 30 mins 30 mins)? The FISA debate is being postponed. This is dilatory. Somebody is buying time. So: Why?
CSPAN video feed signal just jumped, never seen that before.
Hmmm.
Hmmm. @ 71
maybe they are still trying to knock out a compromise.
Steny: I vacated the vote; not accepted, I don’t know why. Attempt to make a fair resolution of the matter.
He’s got a quasi-evangelical lilt that is interesting.
Hmmm. @ 72
So it is the FISA negotiations, not the AG bill?
cancer_cures @ 49
I’d like to see people dressed up as chickens with the masks of all the chicken hawks in the Republican Party. Gingrich, Delay, Cheney, Wolfiwitz (remember him?), Scott Jennings, Karl Rove. Street theater is a tactic that needs to be utilized in the coming campaign. It makes people laugh and the message is clear. It delegitimizes the neo-cons and the Republican Party.
I think this dispute has interrupted everything else, but I am just guessing.
The question of the hour is: Will Boehner cry?
The “honk bands” demonstrate that some people in the U.S. are still alive.
Cancer Cures, the real anarchists aren’t in Europe, they are in the Republican Party. It is they who, supposedly metaphorically, want government small enough to drown in a bathtub. In reality that means that real human beings drown in the New Orleans and the Mississippi River. For the Republicans, I have no doubt they feel that this is a beginning.
I’m a big fan of protest and a big fan of street theater. I am not a fan of the mixing of the two mainly because the application of street theater to protests in recent years have been a problem of relevance.
When I go to an antiwar protest I dont want a guy on stilts lecturing about global warming and I dont want the well meaning angry girl in the spotted owl costume haranguing me about her pet issues at the fucking WAR PROTEST.
Having said that, if someone were to do some of the ideas listed above, or the cheerleader/band routine in the vid above I have no objection and may even participate in something like that. Context is the key.
Since it look like nothing’s gonna get done in the House this evening anyway, the least they can do is censure Rep Tancredo (R-Evil) for saying that we need to nuke Mecca and Medina yesterday.
Has Roy Blunt ever been relevant???
Hi, Donita!
These groups have an interesting way to act… I say, that is something creative! That way of protesting have very more attention because they’re peaceful and musical…
Lollapalooza? Cool festival! L7 registered your mark there in 94, I loved the show…
Rock on, Donita!
For our friends in MN. and Tx. We’ll see you all this weekend. ;0)

OK. the role of the Court Jester, was to illustrate through humor, dance and theatrics - a criticism of the powers that were. He, (and it usually was a he), by law could not be killed as a result of any deed done or performed.
The point was to illustrate to the King, the effects of his rule. How the people saw him.
And how his ’subjects’ felt. In short, Feedback.
Think of Stephen Colbert, a couple of years back at that WH dinner for the press. I forget
the formal name for the occaision.
He was playing that role then.
Nobody liked it.
finifinito @ 80
I dunno, fini. I adore the “Billionaires for Bush“
Millineryman @ 43
Pay no heed, it’s just lip service.
But everyone deserves a chance to mouth off once in a while.
I mean, it WAS a brassy comment.
But it COULD be construed as tongue and cheek, too.
There’s more, but, I leave it to others, if it hasn’t already been gummed to death.
Loiterer @ 21
…Working on it
;>)
jacqrat @ 85
They’re pretty cool. I just found their Billionaire Name Generator. My Billionaire name is Harris Tocracy.
jacqrat @ 86
that’s a good one!
Loiterer @ 85
GWB and the MSM didn’t like it! Everyone else thought it was genius.
Conyers on fisa bill…I yield to Sylvester Reyes
Jac. You got mail.
That’s weird. petwrecker is getting CSPAN about 4 minutes before I am.
Here’s my dog’s billionaire name bestowed upon her:
“Patsy O’Bushes”
darkblack @ 88
Aargh!!! I Never Learn!!! 8-(
Conyers: sunsetting the bill in 4 MONTHS, time to see if the stopgap approach works … “in the spirit of accommodation we made 3 changes that I thought might go too far” … “but some people won’t accept yes for an answer.”
Hooboy.
Hmmm. @ 93
I think TV advances webstreaming by a bit.
I really enjoyed the playlist!!!
CTuttle @ 95
What? Merely a pastoral still life idyll, avec loofah.
;>)
Smith: Teh Terrer! We are all gonna be killed if we don’t pass this forever!
jacqrat @ 94
Well I don’t have a dog, but I did it anyway. If I did, he would be named Redd Carpet.
re: eCAHNomics @ 94
D’oh! Sorry, bad ASSumpion on my part. I _am_ watching via web.
darkblack @ 87
A modern odalisque.
darkblack @ 100
Ya owe me a gallon of eye-bleach! I’ll add it to your running tab! *g*
Would somebody PLEASE sign Reyes up for a “Toastmasters” class?
Reyes makes me nervous.
Shit- Give Clusterfuck a bill he hates- require warrants in advance and if he doesn’t like it- tell him to shove it up it’s ass. Leave Washington- let him yell about congress still being in session to an empty chamber– FUCK this guy!!
CTuttle @ 104
I knew the garter was over the top.
;>)
jacqrat @ 106
LOL!!!
…oh, and FIRE the person who shapes Blunt’s eyebrows, too.
jacqrat @ 111
I think he has plastic hair. Probably cost $3.00.
Roy Blunt is full of sh*t!
Hmmm. @ 102
You’ve just plumbed the depth of my tech savvy.
