Zedster? Now, on to the link.
Damn!
Hey Christy:
Hope you’re enjoying Yearly Kos!
Wow!
that is just amazing!
TexB here, loveblogging live (a bit of) the Roots session of Yealy Kos — focus: online activism. Panel also includes Pach, Randall Winston from Agape, Christy, and two others. More as I learn it.
Jane promoting the CAUSES application of facebook
Justin Krebbs of Living Liberally, 200 affiliated groups.
This is so Tom Waits – love it!
Introducing James Rucker, move-on.org, color of change. Christy sitting to his left.
Pach up first — using technology to turn netroots into grassroots. Google groups —> beta site staterootsproject.org —> facebook

the holy grail — self, sustaining, bottom up, grassroots activism & knowledge sharing, so that WE can talk to our congressmen locally but share nationally
TexB @ 11
TexB,
Thanks for the play-by-play blogging! Please keep it up!

committed volunteers.
lots happening since last year’s YKOS
that’s a riot. nice touch with the “manual ashtray” at the end…it’s so Cheney.
Using facebook, we can integrate. explaninng the little bule F
That vid is hilarious.
Christy,
That was terrific video! LMFAO.
I passed it on to likely interested parties.
TexB @ 14
i wish we’d never dropped the google groups. we were rocking for a bit there…. :(
Facebook lets us do online what “drinking liberally” does in person.
Facebook FDL group. 800 . But we can’t do nested groups. (geographically, issue interest) Not yet. Someone is helping to create this. Other facebook problem is that there are problems when groups get larger than 1000.
Other social networking options — partybuilder like what the dem party uses, but not as dynamic as facebook. expensive.
What kind of problems happen when groups get larger than 1000 on Facebook?
Pach reporting also the possibility of text messaging. Votolatino.org is doing this. partner with veejays and DJ’s & musical artists and insert importance of political involvement. ask for email adds and register people to vote. not sure how to adapt this model to us. but we need to build coalitions.
facebook limits communication and group emails when groups get too large.
votolatino using a new tech to host voter registration form with the skin that looks like that site so people feel they know who they are giving their info too
randall winston, project agape, how to use CAUSES on facebook. why they built them the way they did. where it’s going.
causes launched 7 weeks ago. $2.1 million raised. any FB user can start a cause.
Causes in FB now includes political campaigns as well.
What a video! I can no longer believe my eyes.
BTW, what are the odds that Scooter was the one who called to send the team to Ashcroft’s bedside? (I like the idea.)
women’s hospital near boston 740,000 people. collecting money. now the biggest cause on FB. a breast cancer cause.
EPU’d and more relevant here:
OT: This is my theme today: Let’s get H Res 589
moving along.
I looked at the list of current reps on ActBlue and None of the reps we support the most are co-sponsors Here is the list I have:
Steve Cohen
Jerry McNerney
Patrick Murphy
Carol Shea-Porter
Hilda Solis
Here is the list of co-sponsors.
I have to think there is something wrong with this picture. All of these folks should be signing on.
Call and write them along with your own rep. Keep the pressure on.
I M P E A C H !!!!
P.S. If Gonzo is Impeached it’s may be that he could not be pardoned. How is that for incentive.
founder of agape is co-founder of facebook.
you can join a cause or donate money. not petitions and action alerts.
facebook used to be real names only and.EDU account. real persona. focus on truthfulness. REAL community.
Per MSNBC: 5th Circuit Court of Appeals finds for insurance companies over policyholders. Insurance companies not liable for Katrina flood claims. Another F!*& you to everyday people courtesy of the conservative movement.
Whenever I hear news like this I can’t help but thinking about all the Bush/Cheney signs I saw in front of trailer homes in certain rural areas of the US back in 2004.
CAUSES is one component of a person’s real world persona.
facebook is about validation. show people what you care about. get your friends to care also because your friends are there as well,
when it was just groups and not causes, the people from that cause couldn’t contact the people. but causes includes membership. how much money you’ve raised, how many you’ve recruited, group $$$ collected. lowest common denominator until reaching critical mass
thanks for the livebloggin texb
Causes will be growing in the direction of off-line, real world engagement.
The hospital that got the check from FB causes had no idea who the check was from.
non-profit organizations can build a profile. owned by the org. lists specific campaigns, etc.
now the org can see who has started causes for them, tap into future leadership.
Hi all checking for my “f”

broken linky
Jane asking Randall questions.
How much total money?
don’t know yet. (that 2 million is users???)
what about news feed?
people hated it at first. now people can see and connect to their network.
photos also reasonably new. people didn’t want it because there are so many photo apps online. but tagging lets us connect our lives
Justin is not a techie.
Living Liberally. Drinking Liberally. Welcoming, social drinking club around progressive perspective.
OT – action alert has gone out from the ACLU:
reading liberally, eating liberally, other ways of finding community.
realworld @ 30: Can you tell us who the Act Blue critters are that are not with the program yet?
Let’s start identifying them, calling them, and TELLING them what to do. They need to be reminded who they work for. Us.
selise @ 42
Something tells me they expect something, but cannot – or are unwilling to – stop it.
One thing I’ve never understood about executive privilege that may have been answered before: If the president declares executive privilege to prevent someone from testifying, is that someone absolutely prevented from testifying?
I mean, if the someone blew off the president’s claim and testified anyway, what repercussions would there be? Prison time? Being called names by the president?
I’ve just not been clear on that.
People are more alienated, less involved in bowling leagues, councils, etc. Drinking Liberally is a way of combating that. Robert Putnam book in 199_
This is personal, in-person. People in this room and not just the cameras, avatars, dragons & trolls.

We’re not all ready to be hard core activists, but we are ready to talk in person with like-minded people, over beer & food
drinking liberally sees itself is a “gateway drug into progressive politics”
Now we have other people to invite to go canvas with us.
Political addiction.
Next step is to go to chicago in august. (much laughter)
also TRACTION in North Carolina and the BUS PROJECT in oregon.
TR @ 46
great question. Also, what if indeed they are later found to havebeen covering up criminal acts? Is that in and of itself criminal individually and by members of the executive branch that ordered them not to testify?
selise @ 42
Yes, channeling TREX, ATTACK! Quit getting bullied into this crap. It will be THE BUSHIES fault if we get attacked again, because it is his only reponsibility, remember. Tell Bush and the Bushies to STAY IN DC in August instead of taking a vacation. This is PURE ROVE. Project their own weak points onto their rivals, and blame them for it. Anyone who went to college and took Phsych. 101 knows this! It’s childish, and NEEDS TO BE CALLED OUT. Sorry for the caps, but I simply cannot believe how the democrats get pushed around by the Bushies/Bullies. C’mon!!
Thanks for the video. Brilliant!
Many bloggers love drinking liberally. First place they see each other in person.
Anyone read Hertzberg in the New Yorker this week about the California ballot initiative? TREX should pounce on it. It calls for California district electoral college reps to vote on behalf of their districts independantly from the overall percentage of the vote. That means about 25 or so electoral college votes for the Republicans in ‘08 elections. This should be addressed at the Lake.
Hi everybody!
{{{TexB}}} for the coverage! I SO wish I could be there.
CSNY “Chicago”
Reminder FDL breakfast tomorrow:
Friday August 3

7-9 am central
New: room is on second floor. There will be signs.
Please wear your badge, thanks!
Jane commenting between speakers. Jane offered to take all LA bloggers to coffee when she first started. Fast and deep abiding friendships develop quickly.
Must keep things fun!!!
Next on the panel is James Rucker, Color of change. deepen engagement of african americans.
more from James —
When you start from wanting to create social change, helps to be part of a group online or offline that reflects your values back to you.
Many of us not a part of a church culture. This can be life fulfilling. For many black people, felt like they weren’t fully a part of the campaign for changing something, but may not address things that are important to each of us.
Example — hurricane katrina, helping survivors, the politics, but from an african american perspective
(I am pausing for a few minutes to stretch my muscles. Back on for Christy.)
Great makeup like that could come in handy…
This doesn’t seem to be the summer for Alaskan Republicans: That Sinking Feeling
TexB @ 60
So, you’re live blogging because there is no live feed – is that correct?
just announced @ ustream:
Howard Dean up at 7pm (ChiTime)
i am live blogging because it seems to cost people $25 to see the live feed
And TexB, we love you for it. Thank you.
Jane, universal online access as a right.
Q — Will move-on segment locally?
A — their staff is 20 people. expensive to tackle local issues for smaller groups. also a tech problem, but one that is solvable.
lack of control of the nat’l group over the groups that may do weird stuff and damage the national brand.
TexB @ 65
Ustream is fr*e
Just follow the link.
Right now, interview w/challenger for
Cornryn’s Sen. seat in TX.
(different things being streamed from
YKOS) Thanks TxBets & LooHoo, for panel
loveblogging *g*
Second Life is the one with the $25 cost.
Christy Hardin Smith
technology-challenged
but learning.
On a daily basis, she likes to bring people together on the changing issues. Engage the readers, commenters. Connect to people’s own lives. Poverty impacts communities everywhere, but causes may vary somewhat.
Just found this pic of the Libby panel over @ Jeralyn’s Talk Left.
http://www.talkleft.com/story/…..53’s
Howard Dean has tried to energize younger people. Christy is BY FAR the youngest person at the dem mtgs she goes to. BY FAR.
Best way to make a difference is to let people know we’re watching them.
Christy — rubber stamp project was fun and meaningful. that is why it was successful.
“Get off your butt and do the work.
If you won’t do it, you can’t expect someone else to.”
Most people don’t. So when someone does, or they ask for a mtg with a senator, they panic!
What organization are you with?
I am with “people who vote”. I am a voter and I want to talk to senator X
TexB @ 65
Ah! No wonder I can’t the feed to work.
It’s always money, isn’t it.
Christy, much more involved in politics after “the peanut” was born. Make things better for her sake. Tap into that for someone who is not yet politically active. If you get 1 or 2 people active, imagine the impact among all of us.
End of Christy.
Few Q’s
Wordsmith – see link @ 68.
Ustream.tv is free service.
Now: Interview w/Rick Noriega,
candidate TX-Senate (incumbent Cornryn)
Howard Dean @ 7pm
question from the floor —
Man worked on Jerry McNierny campaign. Logistical nightmare. No funding. He built volunteer management tools. We need to share what we have, share volunteer opps. He is going to share the tools with other campaigns.
Much re-duplication of effort. Several organizations publicizing the same thing. What about a RSS feed for all events in X miles of my zip code? Move ON will be using it before november.
TribeScribe @ 75
Thank you. I’m not getting it to connect, however.
Christy, get involved in your local party groups.
question, project-finders, meeting up, this man wants to know about how to sustain all this through growth in the groups themselves. people get burned out. Needs to be addressed. Train the next leaders.
question,
web 2.0 — carry your activism from one site to other sites. does the future lie in integrate all the things we’re involved with. FB lets you. other things?
answer — critical mass ?
TexB @ 79
new answer — widgets
lost the last comment.
Lots of clapping. Time to give up the room.
nice job TexB *s*

Next stop……the Capitol…??

TexB @ 65
TexB
You are way cool! You’re right – I went to the YKSL registration site, and yes, it costs $25.00. I was tempted but ultimately decided I couldn’t really afford it. Thanks!

YKSL – Second Life
has the $25 charge
So what’s on the YKOS schedule this evening?
I’ll pay because I can, and also because other’s can’t and YK needs support.
((TexB)), I did some live blogging last year, too. It’s a great way to keep those of us who can’t be there connected to the community. It’s such a trip to meet all those people you’ve been hanging with for months.
Thanks so much.
TribeScribe @ 85
Oh, kewl! Thanks, didn’t know about this one.
What’s up now? Label: Lurkers’ Caucus.
LOL.
