Hey, gang. When I wrote about John Roberts and the burned mansion the other day, and how things can happen in an instant — the lightning stroke was the metaphor I used — little did I know that I’d get to see one of these instant changes hit fairly close to home.
As everyone knows by now, at 6:05 pm local time yesterday, just after the height of the afternoon rush hour, the 35W freeway bridge spanning the Mississippi near downtown Minneapolis collapsed, taking dozens of cars, trucks and buses down with it.
What caused this to happen? Massive failure of the steel support structures, apparently. Did we have advance warning? Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota’s governor, says no — he says the bridge passed its most recent exams with no major problems. Others beg to differ: as the sidebar in this NPR article states, in 2005, engineers rated the bridge as “structurally deficient” and that it would possibly need to be replaced, not just repaired. This little fact was also mentioned in the StarTribune today, both in a news article and in a column by Nick Coleman.
It’s also possible that delayed maintenance — delayed because of budget cuts, as the Republican Pawlenty would rather chop off his own genitals than undo his tax cuts for the rich — may have been a factor. (In fact, the past two decades’ worth of stingy Republican governors and Jesse Ventura — equipped with just enough Republicans in the Lege to prevent any efforts to override their budget vetoes — have taken their toll; the bridge’s “structurally deficient” rating goes back to 1990, and nothing other than makeshift fixes was done to it after that.)
Eat your heart out, Grover Norquist.

fitz me, pw
Hi, Trex!
zed from Mpls!
I mean, PW!!
Sounds like Pawlenty lied at the general public’s expense. And he’s a Republican. But I repeat myself.
Hey, TRex!
Thanks for the update, PW.
I’ll be the public face of your mod squad tonight. Glad to be spending late nite with you but wish it was under better circumstances.
Evening All. Glad to see you subbing for Trex PW. I fear that the most lasting and devastating legacy of decades of Republican misrule will be our severely degraded infrastructure.
PW & other Twin Cities Firepups,
Just want to say my heart goes out to you as the recovery and healing starts.
I’m having a hard time thinking of good late night things to say knowing that our gang is having too much fun without us in Chicago.
Dana @ 2
Uhoh, cleanup!!! *g*
So how many martinis did the gov save by not fixin anything?
Whoops! I meant PW! So sorry!
Hey DocRoss. What’s in like in your city today? So sorry.
Are all of our firepups accounted for?

How about “She-Rex?”
I want some good news for a change. Anybody have any?
Boy do I mis type a bunch of stuff the last thread.
I have been hammering this same point with friends and family all day.
The infrastucture that has made our country great the past 50 years is crumbling because the rich are siphoning off all of the revenue.
Rich People: You have made your billions due to the investments of the past. Reinvest.
AZ Matt @ 9
Seconded. Evenin’ all
Best wishes and condolences to all involved.
We here in aus have had a right wing govt for 11 years and are having big problems with infrastructure too. They seem to have targeted making money for the already rich, stuff everything else. Bastards.
Evening DD and Gnome!!!
Pw, you cant expect the people who are actually responsible for these decisions to actually be responsible for these decisions.
can you?

Thanks PW. Minnesota has it’s own Grover Norquist wannabe in the “Minnesota Taxpayers’ League” with the wanker David Strom. He’s had Pawlenty and the entire state Republican party over a barrel with his “no taxes” pledges. Even decent, fiscally conservative but non-wingnut Repubs are scared to death of him. One of the things he’s be adamant about is killing funding for transportation and transit.
Sick.

Hey, PW. You need to start and lead a new party. If dems win in 2008, commenters on this site will be bitching and moaning about dems in the fall of 2009 just as they are today.

Right back atcha from Saint Paul!
Two years ago, Albany, NY – this happened, in the evening thank goodness or it could have been bad.
As the Albany Times Union noted after it happened back in 2005,
It’s a win for Republicans – they’ll just point to the wreckage and say it’s proof government doesn’t work. Then they’ll privatize the surviving infrastructure and use the revenue for more tax cuts. It’s a perfect system.
God I hate this One handed typing, sorry gone, and if you speak to him (thats the god thing)can I have my arm back.

Thanks for the concern. Life goes on here. Everybody seems to have a story. Some crossed the bridge minutes before, others know people who were stuck in the traffic jam that the collapse caused and are just thankful that the traffic wasn’t moving faster.
I personally don’t know anyone who was on the bridge, but I know some who know some. We’re all in a bit of shock.
Thanks for your thoughts and wishes.

Your general idea of what the Rs will do is headed in the right direction, but to be more specific, the “public-private partnership” (already the buzzword on Hardball today, will involve giving no-bid contracts to Halliburton to rebuild the roads, following which they’ll get maintainance contracts, in which they’ll be completely free to set the tolls.
DocRoss @ 31
I believe that there is about to be a huge rethinking of that attitude. If the major railroads were operating like that now their infrastructure would be crumbling too. They invest and upgrade constantly because they know it pays in the long run.
I strongly feel that most citizen look at road as a government responsibility and it would be difficult for Grover Norquist and his group of sh*ts to change their minds. But people also must realize that investment in infrastructure is a constant and ongoing process.

Quite poignant to realize the infrastructure failure at both ends of the Mississippi — the levees in Nola the greatest tragegy of human suffering, now MN. why can’t we have leaders who understand that ALL infrastructure is an investment for future generations? and, the non-glamorous stuff does indeed cost money. This country needs a HUGE influx of funding for public works NOW. And, we need the engineers and architects, spec writers, and inspectors to do it. And we need to fund the educations of those professionals for public service.

You can’t mean that Mike McConnell – the long time head of the NSA, the very same NSA which has been doing the illegal Warrantless Wiretapping, the very same person who might have to go to jail for a very long, long time if one were to kinda obey the FISA law?
I can’t figure out why Mikey would give Gonzo an perjury alibi about illegal Warrantless Wiretapping, can you? *g*
Unfortunately, it’s too far advanced to do this. The entire intel community would fall apart if the private companies were removed. The Associate Director of Intelligence (i.e. one of the nation’s top spies, just below McConnell) admitted this in his response to my Washington Post article, that they could not function without contractors.
The NSA is probably the most outsourced of the Intel Community, save perhaps for CIFA. The government doesn’t have the capabilities to read our email, listen to our phones, etc. That might be a relief to some. It’s Lockheed and Raytheon, Booz Allen Hamilton, SAIC and a host of subcontractors who have the capacity.
And the FBI, I was talking to someone from there this weekend and they’re wanting to move in the direction of using more contractors. There are some Assistant Agents in Charge, I’m told, who are contractors, thought this was not clear whether they were industrial or individual.
Sorry us old folks should know when to save web pages and when to shut up.

Good evening, everyone. I’m on sort of a working vacation, and just got my first bit of news since the weekend. The bridge collapse is so sad – prayers go out to all of those affected.
I hope this horrible tragedy will wake up more of our leaders. Our infrastructure has been crumbling for decades. We’ve been spending money in many of the wrong places, not investing in maintaining our bridges, water supplies, and upgrading our energy systems.
On a lighter note: Suzanne – I’m heeeeere! :) I’ll email ya in a sec…
Suzanne @ 104
All pawn shops in St Paul (maybe all of Ramsey County) are required to provide a daily list of ALL purchases including serial numbers to the police, so if you can give the cops a serial number, there’s a good chance you’ll get it back.
Our infrastructure problems are greater than just making repairs. It ties in with the suppression of science currently going on with the administration. After the revolutionary war, we built new types of roads out into the wilderness, new water management, all based on new-at-the-time science. After the civil war, railroads trekked coast-to-coast. After WWII, Ike spanned the continent with highways, and new power grids expanded as well. We need new thoughts, new physics applications, and new ways of building to look toward the future of infrastructure, and this is exactly the sort of science that the Bushies, backed by corporations which profit from old science, are holding down.
Everyone knows that greener tech is where the future lies, it’s just some folks don’t see where their personal profit comes out of it.

Just the whole paint it up and make it look nice, screw that it’s core is shaky as long as it loooooks good. A goddam bridge the size of that doesn’t fall down willy nilly like. No, I know in my heart of hearts there were warnings and signs and that they were ignored.

Arkansas couple have their 17th child, say they want even more
Thu Aug 2, 2:07 PM
LITTLE ROCK (AP) – An Arkansas couple had a baby daughter today – their 17th child and seventh girl.

And the pair say they’re still not ready to give it a rest.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar said in an interview that their daughter, Jennifer Danielle, was born at 10:01 a.m. at a hospital in Rogers, Arkansas.
Michelle, who’s been pregnant for 126 months – or 10.5 years – of her life, said the couple would like to have more girls, since they love the ruffles and lace.

I suggest a saturation “freeway blogger” campaign. Signs all over the place, so that no matter where he goes, he’s confronted with them.
Okay, just quickly read some of the “Deep Modem” writings.
This is an initial reaction, but I don’t buy it. He’s got some of the jargon, but not entirely by any means. I really didn’t see anything, at least in what I read, that I would consider new information. It’s all speculation. It’s way too much of a conspiracy without enough substance.
Now I do think there are some kernels of truth in this, particularly along the lines of speculation of the use of private contractors as legal workarounds, but this could be right for the wrong reasons. I blogged about this a couple of days ago, Intel Outsourcing at the Heart of the Gonzales Controversy.

EJ Dionne column

Perhaps you missed it, but Wednesday was the 19th anniversary of Rush Limbaugh’s radio show. Limbaugh was celebrating his ripe old age, in media years, in the same week that liberal blog fans were trekking to Chicago for the YearlyKos convention. Therein lies one of the most important stories in American politics.
Make no mistake: From the beginning, Limbaugh was a revolutionary figure. He befuddled Democrats and the journalistic establishment because he was an up-to-date throwback. The large audience he won on the right marked the return in the United States of openly partisan mass media, a 19th-century phenomenon that had all but disappeared in the late 20th century.
Limbaugh is not primarily about information, though he freely uses even those bits that come his way courtesy of dreaded “liberal” media sources. His goal is mobilization, and he has been extremely good at it. He spawned conservative imitators in media markets all over the nation and aroused a faithful band of Dittoheads who despise all things liberal and Democratic.
The greatest gift to Limbaugh was Bill Clinton’s election as president in 1992. Talk-show hosts are much better on offense than defense. Limbaugh was unusually hesitant about Pat Buchanan’s challenge to the first President Bush during the 1992 Republican primaries because their fight split Limbaugh’s base. With Bush dispatched that fall, Clinton brought conservatives together in rage, and Limbaugh stoked it. He deserves major credit for the Republicans’ 1994 landslide.
Democrats and liberals realized they needed a mobilizing force of their own but could not match Limbaugh’s reach on the radio. Enter the Internet, and Markos Moulitsas.

I’m no fan of norquist or coleman or ventura. In most debates I stand to the left the rest of the people in the room But FDL Roberts post the one linked to above depressed me. One may disagree with a point of view and yet not relish another person’s anguish. It’s what drives me to distraction about Norquist & Co. that they are willing to write off millions of people for a tidy balance sheet. And they do it with such smugness. But the Roberts post and some of the comments it elicited were just as smug and frankly dehumanizing. The guy had a seizure or stroke or who knows and you post about how the mighty have fallen? The guy has a family? Please understand it makes it harder to take issue with the merits of his opinions when people talk about pushing him down the stairs. Not only is it unnecessary it is downright counterproductive.

CTuttle,
EJ wrote a pretty good column and it has some good observations in it. Bill’O has helped additional media and national interest in YKos, he is advertising YKos for free essentially.
EJ writes -
I’m not in the habit of giving advice to Bill O’Reilly, but there’s always a first time: Liberal rage at Rush Limbaugh not only was useless, but it actually strengthened his credibility with the right. (I speak from experience.) Bill, I bet Markos loves what you’re doing.

Yeah, we have a bit of the same problem here (though not quite so bad). Average price of a house in town here is over $200K. That is in a town of about 60,000 in western Montana. Ought to be about 1/3 of that.
I know it is so wrong of me to think like this, but I truly hope B*nds comes down with an ACL/MCL/anything that will force him to retirement so he won’t have a chance to best Hank Aaron for the HR record…

That’s just one message-board. This one about Kevin Sites…who published an image of a Marine killing a wounded, incapacitated Iraqi actually encorages that he face assassination.
But here’s a snippet with the expletives that O’Reilly doesn’t seem to be able to find.
“We get headlines about “the possibility of another Abu Gharib”. A Marine shoots an innocent Insurgent, yes you heard it I-N-N-O-C-E-N-T! F*ck him and f*ck the media! Those motherf*ckers have been using their fellow dead friends as traps for those boys! …some f*ck face decided to pull the pin of a grenade and trying to take out anyone he could.
