Mary, you are still crackin’ me up ;-)
:) :P :}
oh dang, pw has gone to bed and there is no utube in her post.. let me see if i can fix it
No! It’s a P*ssy!
burns — EPU’d:
I know it is so wrong of me to think like this, but I truly hope B*nds comes down with an ACL/MCL/anything that will force him to retirement so he won’t have a chance to best Hank Aaron for the HR record…
LL, yeah, i know – i wish bonds would stay at one below for the rest of the season (full disclosure – i am a giants fan)

I will just humbly observe that for 12 years I lived five blocks from Wriggly Field. Oh well, there is always next year (always for all time).
Hi, gang! EJ Dionne has written an interesting, and complimentary piece on Kos and the convention. It’s not perfect, since he compares Kos to Rush-for their effect on people and politics-NOT tactics, and acknowledged the times, they are a changin.
WaPo linky.
You may feel like leaving a comment, or something… :D
utube all fixed.. refresh and it shall magically appear on the page
Oh cool, DrD — were you ever among the bleacher bums?
Leahy / Jennings on CSPAN is straight out of bizzaro world.
LoudounLib @ 13
Many times. Until they started selling reserve seating in the bleachers. That really pissed me off.
Suzanne @ 12
ya gotta hard refresh the page – not the refresh comments button
Ah San Diego bouncing along dirt roads, a refreshment of the chilled variety. so much to save so little time.

One day I’ll make it to Wrigley, and Fenway too.
A friend of mine found one of my poems from 15 years ago. Do you guys want to read it?
Suzanne @ 16
I also provided the same link within the thread!
PW, this is the first time I’ve heard this song since college. As in college radio. Talk about a time warp!
Thanks, I think. :) I’ll let you know for sure when my brain settles back into it’s proper place.

Yogurt of Good Intention
The children, the little girls,
their father, their mother
were inclined towards happiness.
The young parents wrapped their
arms around the world and gave
the girls their best.
Which was not good enough.
The steady gaze of the father dropped
and he died a long death of mythical proportion.
It took forever. It took no time at all.
The mother became a wavering gauze of indecision
but always kept yogurt in the refrigerator.
Some how the children would get enough to eat.
The daughters grew taller, shattered.
Mended.
Shattered.
Mended.
One afternoon, someone counted six containers
of good intention in the box.
The crackling plastic covers were still glued down.
Opaque, the view beneath teamed with trapped life
and expectation.
LoudounLib @ 7
Moral hair-splitting here: I will not wish for it to happen to Bonds, but if it happens I will shed no tears.
marymccurnin @ 19
I think it’s unanimous…!!! *g*
I saw that CT. Thank you
The footsteps of the first Americans, the first horses, sorry the vanished world and a time when a little help may have mattered. Sorry,

Potent, Mary! Pack’s a punch!!!
well, hmpf… TPM has Boenher leaking classified secrets on Fox and the rush to pass the new FISA regs.
Very curious indeed!
burnspbesq @ 25
I hear ya. In my lifetime, though, I’d much rather see someone like young Ryan Zimmerman beat that record.
And guess what forgot to link to the post, now I know how all that concrete and pavement got there
OC, are there any republicans who don’t leak? geez, louise!
Mary, thank you — that is really good.
Thank you.
I tell ya’ – it looks like Boenher really pulled a boner… that wasn’t any small potatoes he leaked!
I live in Ohio and Boenher is not a feather in our cap.
OldCoastie @ 30
This is the worst scenario; “…fixing FISA to close the serious intelligence gaps that are jeopardizing our national security.”
No ice cream tonight, Suzanne.
I’m going for the full-on diabetic coma tonight.
Pass the insulin, please.
Thank you, Mary –
burnspbesq @ 39
mmmmm, pe-can pie!
What has happened very recently to rush the FISA fix through? What are they so suddenly afraid of? It is not like they are afraid of the congress.
OMG – I make the best pecan pie possible. Won a thanksgiving pie taste-off by the guys on motors one year – they went from house to house of coworkers living in town that year and they declared my pecan pie the best.
Love me some pecan pie – thanks burns. i’m gonna have to find that recipe now…
burnspbesq @ 39
Oh my. I gained ten pounds just looking at that.
I barely pay any attention to sports, but if Bonds can’t tie or break the record without steroids, then don’t bother.
DrDick @ 44
And I feel the urge to brush my teeth.
LoudounLib @ 41
And on that note … I actually have some work yet to do, so I will take my leave of this most salubrious spot.
Pleasant dreams, y’all.
I am going to go watch stupid tv and cuddle with my doggies and hubby. See ya’ll tomorrow.
I love each and every one of you.
The Lake can only be described as a veritable roller coaster! A commenter will post a positive post on Govt action and then another would disclose overt malfeasance!!! WTF??? Ain’t the Lake grand , Tho???
g’night burns, go Mets and go Nats!
Pecan pie, yum! Mmmmnmnnn, yes, that does sound good.
(wiping chin) g’nite burns.. thanks for the pie

Ah, Nite, Sleepers!!! 8-)
CTuttle @ 29
Hear, hear!
I hate these brief drive-by visits. But work starts early tomorrow (with a meeting, yay!) so I’m off to bed.
Sweet dreams, firedogs. See you all tomorrow.
Mary, thanks for sharing your poetry. It’s good.
I’m at work, too – have to get invoices out so I can leave for France in the wee hours. mother-in-law makes great desserts, btw…
I’m out, too. ‘Night all…
Night OW. Try not to sleep throught the meeting (I know I usually do).
Anyone heard the latest- the surge is workin cause US casualties are down in July- lowest number in 8 months…
Trouble is- it’s not true—the number of US troops killed in July was 81- EXACTLY the number killed in Feb. and March–90 total coalition casualties occured- HIGHER than march (82) and Feb (85).
Newspapers made the mistake of picking up on the administration claims before the month was even OVER- and there will be no retractions now that the facts are known.
Small example perhaps- but it shows exactly how the media works.
So no one here with the alkyl dust, or the smell of coastal desert in the distance. Yes now a place of the shoppers delight, and the gang member. A place as it always has been, hope or despair, life or the other edge can be seen. But no where can it be seen more clearly life against the good sense. but like all the poor the eye pass over them like abandon cars.
marymccurnin @ 42
It’s one exposed, court declared, illegal act which the last congress would not “fix” before their majority clock ran out. Lets remember they manged to do a lot of retroactive CYA re torture and illegal renditions… but not this which they were aware of.. Why?
All I know is with this in my mind it strengthens my resolve to hound the Dems into not covering Bushies arse anymore than they need to strengthen our Orwelian state.
DrDick @ 62
As long as they don’t catch you napping, it’s all ok. That’s why I’m always in the back of the room. :)
punaise, when do you take flight?
(waving to all the sleepy pups)
pun – how are we gonna get by with you in france – you gonna be able to check in while there?
rwcole @ 63
Does it surprise ya, RW?
marymccurnin @ 42
Perhaps some of the *stakeholders* are becoming nervous/uncooperative and asking for additional assurances.
CT
Nope- but it was worth a mention I thought.
I think the FISA “stakeholders” are worried about going to jail, most likely to jail in 2009.
With no one there to pardon their sweet asses.
rwcole @ 63
Several people have pointed out that casualties always go down in July (guess it’s even too hot for proper jihad). It was, however, the highest casualty count for July so far.

recipe on the back of karo syrup bottle with the following change:
double the nuts – recipe calls for 1 and 1/2 cups pecans – i had that in crushed and broken nuts into the batter then add another cup and a half all pretty on top of the batter.
it calls for 1 tsp of vanilla – i use an entire vanilla bean or two tsp of very good vanilla.
simple to make, looks nice, and tastes even better

so we put Master Punaise in charge of the next administration(Pelosi ‘07)’s program for the NSA computers they won’t need since they won’t need to snoop on all of us, as much:
1) enter every dictionary for every language into the computer(s);
2) algorithm through every word for puns;
3) find the most trans-lingual puns: most languages;
4) build language using these puns as foundation;
5) use new language to …

CT- When I was working detectives (6 years) they used to call me Lady Death. I was the one who coordinated the paperwork on all the coroner’s findings on all death cases, and had a medical to english dictionary so i could interpret them for the guys. Like I said, I worked the dark side.
I was working Missing Persons and was in contact with the Cororner’s office so I became the liason

yellowdog jim @ 130
The “tech guy” who built our first computer was such a nice guy, I thought. Until we found out he wasn’t.
My neighbor saw him coming out of our house, on another service call (sh#t for brains) and she said, “You know, I recognize him. He used to be a pimp.”
!
(I didn’t ask her how she knew that.)
Suzanne @ 159
Tsk. Tsk. 50 lashes with a wet noodle.
Hi all. I’ve been off-line nearly all day.
Are the Democrats going to allow themselves to be stampeded, like on the AUMF, regarding expanded permissions for Bush’s surveillance program(s)? I’ll be so fucking pissed at them if they cave on this!
Suzanne @ 156
Huh? How so?
Oops! I caught your Friedman reference after posting this.

CTuttle @ 175
Well damn it, the Democratic leaders have been indulging in entirely too much foreplay. The people want to get it on!
eCAHNomics @ 177,
Your comment reminded me of this blogger from Texas. She’s a hoot!

eCAHNomics @ 177
Oh, sheeate, there’s even good yankees!
look at springsteen.
Suzanne @ 176
I was listening to the stream, and the report of the boos are true. I want to know how many actually show up at the Hillary-look-alike.
You know, I was 2 years ahead of her at Wellesley, though I didn’t know her. I have sent her about a dozen, very thoughtful, emails since she became my senator. All with Wellesley ‘66 before my signature. Never once have I received a programmed response (only an I-get-too-many-emails-to-respond-personally autoresponse, and even then it too her a couple of years to figure that one out), and never once have I been added to any email list of hers. She’s a loser IMHO. Even Carolyn Maloney, my rep, who’s also a loser, finally added my to an email list.
yellowdog jim @ 180
“Well damn it, the Democratic leaders have been indulging in entirely too much foreplay. The people want to get it on!”
Yeller and WW, Ya both drive the point home!!!
what kind of fuckery is this?
yellowdog jim @ 180
One of my fondest memories of my late husband. He had a T-shirt made with that on it.
tis pre-server upgrade fuckery pun
Said, continuing the metaphor.
Suzanne @ 188
Say it three times quickly…!!!
eCAHNomics @ 184
The more I listen to Hillary, the more concerned I become. At some level, I don’t think she gets it even as much as Bill did, and I consider Bill to be the best Republican president since Eisenhower. Maybe even a bit better than Eisenhower, but not what I’d hope for in a Democrat.
eCAHNomics @ 189
I wouldn’t hammer the issue…!!! *g*
…all this food stuff…it’s gonna end on Saturday when thankfully, Mercury changes into the FIRE sign of Leo and out of the comfy zone of Cancer…really, this has become a food network of sorts…not that I’m complaining….but we could be seeing a little full on drama and lots of fresh ideas ; )

hey spidey – how goes
yellowdog jim @ 194
Yep, Molly & my friend Julia. Two people who make me want to keep TX in the USA. I actually was on a “white-water” rafting trip with Molly & 11 other very interesting women in 1980.
…stiff as a board…raked up the last of the pods…good riddance…next an ax to chop down all the pod trees…off to a hot bath and heating pad…arrrgghhhh

Playing Philly, NYC, and Hoboken this weekend. Swingin’ through Cleveland and Michigan next week. Chicago next Saturday. Minneapolis, Boise, Seattle and Portland(!) on the 19th.
Husband, just to keep things strait.
Per NYT:
These are the guys who are now seeing “light at the end of the tunnel,” or something like that. How many missed benchmarks does it take to ruin their credibility?
wigwam @ 215
The only credibilty they have left is with the 28% Kool-Ade drinkers. But the power they have left is much much greater than that. That is the USA’s great tragedy.
The light at the end of the tunnel was scared to turn the corner because it was in its last throes… or something like that

CTuttle @ 77
How bout more — ambiguity, broad, inclusive terms and definitions and major CinC discretion – perhaps extending to *stakeholders* in all ventures relating to the perpetual war. Surely some of the military contractors could use a bit of reassurance when they deal with potential liabilities in their annual reports.
Nice Feingold is on this. It looks like fait accompli.
yellowdog jim @ 219

Suzanne @ 222
Great idea.
me too.
CTuttle @ 228
ct you can use the search option on the upper left of the page and put in tuttle and facebook and see what comes up… and i know ydj has a way of googling site specific to fdl – i don’t have that link handy
yellowdog jim @ 207
Thanks. That’s very timely stuff. I have to say it again: these bastards are recording (and archiving in perpetuity) every phone call.
People think I’m crazy when I say “archiving in perpetuity,” but let me explain. The cost of recording a given amount of data drops by half every year or so. So, the cost for a year is a certain amount. The cost for the next year is half that amount. The cost for the next year is a quarter that amount. The cost for the next year is one eighth that amount. Now sum the series: 1 plus 1/2 plus 1/4 plus … which adds up to 2. That is to say that the cost of archiving a given stream of data in perpetuity is twice the cost of archiving one year of that stream. That simple fact is what this NSA stuff is all about. They are recording everything and keeping it forever. Every call you ever made. Every e-mail you’ve ever sent.
I can’t prove that in a court of law, but I know what I’d do if my prime concern were terrorists (which it is not), and I know that it would cost less than an aircraft carrier.
wigwam @ 233
Dang, WigWam, our every keystroke is recorded!!! *g*
well then they are recording my giving the appropriate one finger salute to my handlers, ct

now now.
we are old(er).
it’s intended for teenagers.
they have tried to make it easy.
heck, even I did it.
know a teenager you could borrow?
i hear Facebook is pre-loaded in today’s
teens.
it’s free and that means you can try all you like, no charge.
anyway, think of US!
for a change.
(ha.)
i want to see pictures, don’t i?
and
you can see me and Suzanne.
and others …
Suzanne @ 235
That’s why I adore you so much, Ma Cheri!!! *g*
Suzanne,
I’ll raise that with a more british two finger salute and gesture included. Somehow i managed to pick that up from the brit i dated for a few years…
CTuttle @ 234
They feel that they can’t affort to miss much. That’s the “total” in Total Information Awareness.
aliasofwestgate @ 238
Do they really need both?
aliasofwestgate @ 238
How Proper!!! Salut!!! ;-)
I should have remembered to use both hands – that way I could catch them coming and going.
wigwam @ 239
I think we can totally f*** them up on this. Saw Totally Burned on USAnetwork.com tonite. All sorts of techniques to bend the minds of the wingnuts. We must learn them & use them.
wigwam @ 240
If you saw it you’d understand. ^_~ The whole gesture is incredibly dirty if done right.
wigwam @ 239
The sheer irony arises from the sheer volume, and, the sheer lack of linguists, etal…!!! *g*
Suzanne @ 242
I’ll reiterate…!!! 707!
eCAHNomics @ 243
I’ve got to see that. I’m sick of seeing democrats getting handed their ass on these talk shows. They seem to think that because they’ve got God on their side they can go on TV totally unprepared. It’s disgusting!
In the 2004 debates Kerry walked into the same talking point in two separate debates. Per Bush: “He had access to the same intelligence I had.”
What would be the appropriate reply? “You should ask the commander-in-chief to give you the rest.”
There are lot of people who could construct a better reply. But, Kerry should never have been caught flat-footed a second time.
wigwam @ 247
Good Point!
Suzanne, thanks for the pecan pie help. Sounds divine, particularly the vanilla. I, too, have a heavy hand with it.
Now I’ve got my BP up to boiling, I’ll jump into the salubrious waters..
wignwam @ 247
Kerry & Gore (ooh risk of ostracism at FDL) were 2 of the worst candidates Ds could ever imagine. Both won the election but couldnt take office. How lame can you be? Off to bed.
CTuttle @ 245
They are probably using software to do wire-speed preprocessing as the data comes in. Interesting stuff gets pulled up from disk for a second pass with more clever algorithms. If it’s still interesting, it gets passed to a human. If it’s interesting to that human, it gets passed to contractors who follow up with standard police/PI investigations, after which there’s the possibility of the subject becoming a GWoT detainee.
eCAHNomics @ 250
IMHO they weren’t that bad, but were badly managed. IMHO, Bob Shrum writes the best concession speeches in the business. ’nuff said.
CTuttle @ 234
more to your point though, i believe that this is what data mining is/has been for some time, all about.
way beyond the abuse of massive universal snooping, beyond what they’ve already admitted to, beyond the violation of everyone’s privacy (except dick cheney’s), i believe the data mining is being used to leverage electoral advantage(s), for partisan political election engineering by taking the tools of statistical marketing and applying them to vastness of data, to steal more elections from us.
my privacy i could/may as well as surrender.
they can know so much stuff about me.
but when they can apply analyses to the output from data mining operations, they could reveal trends and tendencies on larger scales, where my personal privacy doesn’t matter.
the primary benefit may be designing propaganda campaigns.
we have already seen what they can do with the information poisoning systems like Newscorp, cnn., abc, waPo, nytimes, et al.
the netroots stands in their way.
wigwam @ 251
True, if it fits a leftist algorithm, Lock’em up!!!
well, that’s about it for me tonight folks. Looks like the tech crew did another stealth installation that did not cause even a ripple in the waters of the lake – just as they did a couple nights ago.
See ya’ll here tomorrow night – same bat time, same bat channel.
Suzanne @ 232
well, Facebook tells me that my profile page in unavailable due to maintenance, and it should be back in a few hours.
a few hours?
well, i think it is robo reply for me because i was logged on with the imac when i tried to log on with the dell: this is a Facebook no-no, i know, but i forget.
unless everyone else can’t open Facebook!
anyway, i cannot get to my facebook linkys now.
wait a minute: no i can’t get there from here.
yellowdog jim @ 253
Put nothing onto the Internet that you wouldn’t put on a postcard. ;-)
Suzanne @ 255
Bon Nuit, Ma Cheri!!!
Marty Lederman:
“I think Orin is probably correct that the FISA Court holding that has got everyone in a tizzy has something to do with 50 U.S.C. 1802(f)(2), which defines “electronic surveillance” to include “the acquisition by an electronic, mechanical, or other surveillance device of the contents of any wire communication to or from a person in the United States, without the consent of any party thereto, if such acquisition occurs in the United States.” This covers even communications “targeted” at foreign agents overseas, if they’re speaking to a person in the U.S. And perhaps certain surveillance of wire “switches” in the U.S. does not give the NSA the capability, at the outset, to tell if a particular communication involving a foreign location has a terminus in the U.S. — in which case at least some unknown number of the communications intercepted at the domestic switch will be “electronic surveillance” requiring a FISA court order.”
Weren’t we just discussing this!!!
Suzanne @ 230
Hey Suzeanne – waving right back attacha up there in the incomparable Santa Cruz mountains.
I did not know Mitch has a sister nearby and hope we can all have a meetup one fine day. Monterey has the best coffee shops on the peninsula IMHO. The Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) has a jewel of a library conveniently near my fave coffee house.
Almost feel sorry for HRC – not! If Gore gets in the race she is in for an even tougher road. What were Raul and Bill thinking to let her bail out on a YK2 committment? Guess it could have been Ann Lewis’ call but it just seems so stoopid and rude.
Ahs well! I shall bid a fond adieu to the Lake! Aloha Oe!
Nighters CT – you lead by doing and I’m off to dreamland as well. Am on duty at the museum for the next two days. Best part about it is we now have wifi access there. Sweet dreams all.
Speaking of “Mexican Radio”
Applebee’s has over 20 Franchises in Mexico.
Applebee’s claims it has a progessive policy about diversity.
Applebee’s sponsors Bill O’Reilly.
Bill O’Reilly calls Mexican “wetbacks” and claims that they are taking over the United States and destroying American culture.
Applebee’s has about 20 Franchises throughout the Arab world…you don’t want to even guess what Bill D’O and his guests say about Arabs and Muslims….
OT from last blog…

Well he’s also a liar. Free Republic does allow the F-word through it’s censors. All you have to do is substitute an * or & for one or more of the letters.
Here are two examples…I’m sure there are more.

You have to admit the message coming down from Canada the last few years in particular has been F America.

“That message brought to you by Liberals and the left wing, which incidentally knows no borders. I hear just as much F America coming from the left coast, left media and other blue states in much larger numbers and louder voices than the squeek comming from Liberal patriots in Canada’s leftist stronghold in Ontario.”

That’s just one message-board. This one about Kevin Sites…who published an image of a Marine killing a wounded, incapacitated Iraqi actually encorages that he face assassination.
But here’s a snippet with the expletives that O’Reilly doesn’t seem to be able to find.
“We get headlines about “the possibility of another Abu Gharib”. A Marine shoots an innocent Insurgent, yes you heard it I-N-N-O-C-E-N-T! F*ck him and f*ck the media! Those motherf*ckers have been using their fellow dead friends as traps for those boys! …some f*ck face decided to pull the pin of a grenade and trying to take out anyone he could. So, you think the Marines are a little worried? I mean sh*t,
F*ck that!
72 Virgins to you mother fucker!
You media f*cks who want to burn those Marines are not worth the sweat off my……just go fuck yourself!”

So much for Bill B’o’s lies.
Good morning, pups. The NYT has Bobo wasting ink nattering about aging, and Paul Krugman who says it’s been a “good Democrats, bad Democrats” kind of week. He’s not happy with Sen. Schumer just now.

Coffee and tea are ready, and so are some cinnamon buns that just came out of the oven. Watch out — those raisins get as hot as molten lava! Have a great day.

Here are the list of co-sponsors for H Res 589 (The impeach Gonzo resolution)
Apparently the links generated by Thomas time out or something. So here is the current list of co-sponsors:
Here is the list of Act Blue folks we support who are actually in the House (some one correct me if I have anyone wrong here.)
Now does it bother anyone else that none of the Act Blue folks are co-sponsors?
Should we be communicating that to them?
Oh, and what about your own rep?
Mine, (Markey) is not on board yet. Anyone else in his district. Help me out with him.)
Just asking…
Mornin’ all!
MSNBC tv – 4 US troops were killed in Iraq today. Lady on Morning Schmo says that this backs up Pres. Bush’s statements that “troops may have a difficult August in Iraq.” She fails to mention that it’s August 3rd or that one could say that in any given month, the troops will have a difficult time, and be correct.
…then she goes on to say the iPhone costs consumers $1200 a month.
Marion in Savannah @ 265 –
thank you! i skipped bobo and went directly to krugman. absolutely brilliant and right on! i love how krugman figures out stuff for himself and then describes it to us clearly. so different from the typical pundit.
realworld @ 266 –
thank you for keeping me informed on this. much appreciated!
Selise, you’re right about Krugman. He does seem to be just about the only columnist who’s willing to stand up on his hind legs and call bulls**t when he sees it.
First alarm about bridge raised in 1990
I know this is quite a leap but SCHIPS passed the Senate with a veto proof majority. Republican opposition crumbled in the face of popular demand. Some said that was impossible.
Think about those say the same thing about impeachment and conviction.
realworld @ 273
exactly!
p.s. wrt your previous comment… thomas does suck. but, thanks to the sunlight foundation and the open house project, we’re gonna be getting louis db (now in beta).

Now, of course, there’s a line to use the shower.

You guys get some really interesting weather up there; I once got caught in a blizzard in the Rome area – it was sunny in Syracuse, but on the Thruway, you could not even see ten feet in front. Very scary.

Even worse, I went to college in Oswego. The winters were unbelievable. But the campus(right on Lake Ontario) is sooo beautiful.
