Following on the heels of last week’s discussion on “black hat” political labels and the need to continue the narrative, there is an on point op-ed in the WaPo that asks some interesting questions from a communications perspective:
The philosopher David Hume had it right: Reason is the slave to the passions, not the other way around. Recognizing the primacy of passion in everything we do has profound implications for politics. Reason is the middle manager in decision making, not the CEO. Policies are nothing but the frontmen for values. You listen to the middleman’s “pitch,” but you go straight to the top when it’s time to choose. You go, in other words, to your emotions — particularly your moral emotions — when you pull a lever in the voting booth.
Behind every campaign lies a vision of mind. That vision is rarely articulated, but it influences everything a campaign does or doesn’t do….
If the other side is trashing you and you say nothing or back down, you cede to your adversaries the neural networks that constitute public opinion. People vote largely with their passions, and if you jam their emotional radar, you prevent them from making emotionally informed decisions. Consider the case of George W. Bush, whose life story telegraphed everything voters needed to know to make an informed decision about him: He had dodged the Vietnam-era draft while avidly supporting the war; he had drunk his way through much of his adulthood, even while he had young children at home; he had shown extraordinary incompetence in the business world; his campaign had smeared Sen. John McCain with stories about mental instability and an allegedly illegitimate baby to get Bush through the South Carolina primary in 2000; and he had mocked a fellow born-again Christian whom he put to death as governor of Texas. It was quite a story. The problem was that the Democrats wouldn’t tell it.
When you hear a pollster or strategist say, “We’ve got ‘em beat on the issues,” you know you’re on the dispassionate river, and you know you’re going under….
…They don’t say, “Karl Rove needs to testify under oath about the CIA leak case because we must have a transcript.” Rather, when the president invokes executive privilege, they ask, with righteous indignation: “Mr. Bush, just what is it about ‘So help me God’ that you find so offensive?”
Think about this for a moment: most people are too busy with the details of their everyday lives to pay attention to the minutiae. If the Democrats are the masters of the nitpicky details…where exactly does that leave them except in the dust? The need to craft a good narrative — one based on facts, absolutely, but with enough of an emotional hook to pull people actively into the discussion — is a basic, gut level need for communication.
And not just for political campaign season, either, but for each and every issue that we hit. There is a reason the “village elders” are so far off the mark — they aren’t listening to the facts because they are as easily distracted by wayward cleavage as the bulk of the public when it comes to details and provisos. The Democrats need a more compelling narrative, and they need to stop listening to timid, status quo consultants and pundits who are telling them otherwise.
Go for the gut and the heart first.
(And stop allowing yourselves to be bamboozled by falafel-coveting morons. What, you don’t remember the falafel? Or the cleavage obsessed: twolf1 tells me that Wolf Blitzer has been all cleavage, alla time today regarding HRC….because, heaven forbid, cable news channels should actually discuss, you know…NEWS, or something. Jeebus. As twolf1 said to me: “no Iraq, only iRack”)

ooooh, so close.
A 3rd?
Economic necessity means there is no time.
However, the ONLY thing we humans REALLY ever get to ’spend’ is time.
Totally OT. Please forgive, but two tries in the last post by Marcy, and I just couldn’t get it to post and wanted to thank Marcy.
Marcy, just want to thank you for putting all this all so confusing information into an understandable format. I really do follow these things closely, and admit I am oft times overwhelmed by the complexity, and sheer volume of the misdeeds (aka corruption) by this administration.
I can only imagine what those who don’t follow as closely, depending on MSM for their dose of reality, think. Or should I say don’t think?
Here’s hoping that Roberts is in good health and will look on this as a sign from God to mend his wicked ways.
Dang! Got the whirly to work and could post!
If you had taken odds in Vegas, at the height of the Monica-gate non-scandal in 1998, that Hillary would run for President less than 10 years later and the media would be fixated on her tits, how rich would you be today?
You are dead on. I wrote the Kerry campaign early telling them it was a no brainer to come back from the swift boat attacks and lambast Bush for draft dodging and going awol.
Kerry chickenshitted that one all the way to a loss.
Apologies to all and sundry.
Clearly, Zed(ding) is important to some of you. In future I shall wait. It is not important to me.

shortly after the convention a survey showed that the mojority of probable voters didn’t know that Kerry had served in Viet Nam. That’s when I told my sister he was going to lose. That had been practically the only note he sounded in his entire pre-convention campaign. If he couldn’t get one note to resonate, how could he have won? And then, to cede the ground to the swift-boaters was fucking crazy.

That’s why I think the Gonzo story is gold, if they’d just stop leading with the details and jump on it emotionally (and they’ve been getting closer lately.) How’s this:
“Anyone with a brain can see that Gonzales is either lying or stupid. Anyone but Bush can see that makes him unqualified to be in charge of anything. But Bush has such a low opinion of the country that he’s forcing us to go through an impeachment proceeding, when everyone agrees that they guy should have been fired months ago.”
(And if senators and congressmen don’t think it’s appropriate for them to be saying this personally, where are our “Democratic spokesmen”? All we’ve got against the authoritarian media-industrial complex are cocktail-weenie-hunting pundits…)
Christy – as a trial lawyer even in dry civil litigation I always try for the hearts, if you win them the heads will make up a reason to follow. I think that is why Edwards did so well as a lawyer, he knew the way to the heart. If he can do that in his campaign he’ll be the candidate in 08.
Has this been posted today?
MSNBC: Inslee to sponsor Gonzales impeachment resolution
Gonzales Impeachment Resolution
MSNBC just reported on-air that Rep. Jay Inslee, D-WA-01, will sponsor a resolution favoring the impeachment of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Still developing, but an interesting prospect indeed.
UPDATE: The outstanding team at ThinkProgress caught the report too:
Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) is introducing legislation that would require the House Judiciary Committee and the House of Representatives to begin an impeachment investigation into Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in the wake of his damaging testimony last week. The legislation reads:
Resolved: That the Committee on the Judiciary shall investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to impeach Alberto Gonzales for high crimes and misdemeanors.
We strongly applaud Inslee’s action and thank him for his courageous leadership.
LS @ 15
It pissed me off too. Demanding a recount was about the first useful thing that the Green party ever did.
I agree with you that election fraud cost him the election in Ohio, and therefore, the nation. I have read everything I can find on this, and it is what turned me on to Greg Palast. The odds on the vote varying from the exit polls are overwhelming. If you toss a coin in the air 1200 times and it keeps coming down on Heads, you are not a conspiracy nut to suspect that the coin is heads on both sides.
Why didn’t Kerry protest? He may have reasoned (correctly) that it would be a repeat of the Gore fiasco, and that in the end, not only would he lose, but the country would be worse off for it, especially if Dems had the “sore-loser” collar hung on ‘em.
I am not a tin-foil haberdashery guy, and I really looked at the evidence of election machine fraud wanting to find out that it was “Elvis is alive” type stuff. But the numbers are too compelling.
i love the Conyers letter link to above (the Raw Story link)
Essentially, he accuses Gonzo of being a conspirator in the illegal leaking of classified information! Priceless.
And Conyers make the point that the Admin has leaked the very information it says it cannot give to Congress b/c it’s so super super secret.

now I’m going to thank Inslee!
I am just delighted that Rep. Inslee is finally taking this step.
BUT
What will Pelosi do?
We still need for the measure to pass folks!
Exactly. Democratic leadership needs to have one sentence statements/questions to frame the conversations. A good one right now to hammer again and again would be “Why are Republicans afraid to hear from the American people in a YouTube debate?”
My favorite part of the Gonzo hearing last Tuesday, was when he said he had “misspoken” but had clarified his statement. Then when questioned about how he clarified his statement, he says to refer to the statement made to a reporter. When asked what he said, he said he didn’t know. Then he says he didn’t know what was said, because he didn’t author the statement…Addington/Fielding???
Then when Whitehouse showed him his own memo, which he obviously wasn’t familiar with, he found his own memo troubling… Addington/Fielding autopen??
I want Addington and Fielding to get their butts hauled in.
Just got here.
Do you all know that Roberts suffered a seizure and was taken to hospital?
What we have to realize is that not just political candidates but the whole party is marketed the way we sell cars. Just putting up an ad that tells buyers the plain facts doesn’t work nearly as well as draping a blond over the hood. THAT sells cars.
The controversy over Hilary’s cleavage or Edwards haircut had nothing to do with what was on the surface. These things are about subconscious needs and desires and the media knows how to manipulate them. If they can get you to not just buy but beg and plead for a product like the iPhone they can certainly do the same in the political sphere. News is also a commodity that is sold.
solai @ 32
Did you hear it was a seizure for sure or is it the seizure he had in 1993? Something’s seriously wrong I think. I hope he’s okay.

Usually, the attribution is to “a Republican strategist not associated with any campaign” but this may actually be Corallo. Or perhaps it’s Rove himself.
solai @ 32
Has the word seizure been used in an official report? Other than his incident many years ago?
Per CNN:
” Roberts was conscious after the fall, which happened at his vacation home near Port Clyde, Maine, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg told CNN.
A witness said Roberts fell on a dock, and his injuries did not appear serious.
Roberts was taken by private boat from Hupper Island to the mainland. An ambulance then transferred him to the Penobscot Bay Medical Center in nearby Rockport, St. George Fire Chief Tim Polky told CNN. See a map of Port Clyde »
A hospital spokesman would not discuss the case, citing privacy concerns.
President Bush was notified about the incident during an Oval Office meeting, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.”
Sounds like some kind of collapse.
If Roberts is incapacitated for a while who takes over as chief? Scalia?

Why impeach Gonzo? He makes the perfect hood ornament on the Republican vehicle of governance. Dumping Gonzo now is but one small victory. If he’s still around in 2008 he will be but another compelling reason to electorally euthanize the Republican Party. U.S. citizens have to realize that the Republican Party has to be sent to the dustbin of history if they want to keep their country. One bad apple spoils the barrel and the Republican Party is that bad apple.

Not in any of the reports that I read. Hospital won’t talk.
Could sinking ship Dubya (at this point) get a SC nominee confirmed whom would be harder right than Roberts? I don’t think so and I would hope not.
Bluetoe asks, “Why impeach Gonzo?”
1. He is a perjurer. Sometimes virtue is its own reward.
2. Impeachment! It’s not just for blowj*bs any more. (More delicately: let’s show people what impeachment is meant to be.
3. When Nixon impeachment started nobody knew where it would go, but they had a strong suspicion it would turn up a lot. Sound familiar?

Bush would nominate Ted Olsen. He’s a Republican insider whose wife was on one of the planes on 9/11. Dems wouldn’t dare oppose him for all the bad PR the MSM would give them. He’s a proponent of the Unitary Executive.
Well, now we know why Roberts is so weak on 4th Ammendment claims. He is afraid of search and seizure.
From today’s presser:
“Q Thank you, Mr. President. Your own military commander suggests that, in Iraq, the Iraqi forces are not nearly ready to take over security for their own country, and that U.S. troops will need to stay in the region for many months, if not years. Are you prepared to pass on the fate of the war to the next President?
And Mr. Prime Minister, if I may, what do you see as the biggest mistakes in the management of the war, and what do you propose to do to correct them?
PRESIDENT BUSH: David Petraeus, the general on the ground, will be bringing his recommendations back to the Congress on or about September the 15th. And I think it’s going to be very important for all of us to wait for him to report. And the reason it’s important is, is that I believe that the decisions on the way forward in Iraq must be made with a military recommendation as an integral part of it. And therefore I don’t want to prejudge what David is going to say.
I have said this is going to take a long time in Iraq, just like the ideological struggle is going to take a long time. And so I look forward to David’s report, and then we’ll respond accordingly. There has been some notable progress — Anbar province being such a place — where there’s bottom up reconciliation, where people are rejecting this al Qaeda vision of the world, and saying there’s a better way forward.
There are still setbacks, obviously. We’ve got these suiciders that are trying to foment sectarian violence. But, Ben, I would ask you and the Congress to wait — to do what I’m doing, which is wait until David to come back and make his report. And I think you’ll find it will be considered and based upon the evidence there on the ground. “
So, is the answer maybe I’ll pass the fate of this war to the next administration, or no, I’m not going to pass the fate of this war on to the next administration.
In other words, is he planning on passing on the presidency to another administration??
Bluetoe @ 43
Another good reason to impeach Gonzales is that all roads lead to Bush. If Gonzales’ impeachment shows clear wrong doing then he could be next. As president, Bush can be held responsible for any criminal behavior by Gonzales.
There’s no reason to think that there’s anything seriously wrong with Roberts- but if it DID come down to Clusterfuck making another Chief Justice appointment, it would make for some pretty interesting political theatre…If it were to happen NEXT year- dems would probably just run out the clock and let his nominee die in committee- but it’s a bit early for that- so they’d now have ta tar and feather whoever it is.
BigMitch @ 52

BigMitch @ 52
Nothing like a little black humor.
There are three classical forms of persuasion:
Pathos(emotion), Ethos (the value of the person) and Logos (logic).
The Democratic party maintains its focus primarily upon logos and attempts to maintain the high road by failing to attack the morals or ethics of Republican contenders. Thus the Democrats have already ceded 2/3rd’s of the battle.
nd early
Eg. Kerry did not earn his medals in Vietnam. Attacks the emotions (coward) and ethos (liar). Kerry’s failure to counter attack early and forcefully played into the Republican meme of his being a coward and a liar. Instead, the attack should have been launched very forcefully that the Republicans and Bush (in particular) had to use surrogates to mount the lies (ethos and pathos) as well as a direct attack on the war records of the entire Republican hierarchy.
Look at the US atty scandal:
1. Why do these people have to hide the identities of those making the decision?
2. What are these people hiding since they refused to keep even the most basic paper work as to the reason for each firing?
3. What were these people attempting to pull by replacing these US attys in such an unprecedented manner?
4. Why would the Republicans try to compare these mid-term replacements to replacing attorneys at the beginning of the administration unless they realized just how rotten it smelled.
rwcole @ 55
A seizure is a serious symptom, but it could happen from seriously low blood sugar or something like that… He was not “injured” by the fall, however, he was hospitalized and taken by “ambulance” to the hospital once on the mainland. Something is wrong.
Bluetoe @ 43
because we want the DOJ to go back to having the word “justice” in the name mean something?
because we want the lawlessness to stop?
because keeping abu in place is bad for the country?
The only good argument I have heard against impeachment of Bush, dub or AG is Digby’s opinion that if they are not convicted, it could set a precedent for the unified executive being A-OK Constituionally. I’m not sure about that. Wasn;t Andrew Johnson removed for not gettig Congress’ permission of fire his appontees? (Or is that wrong?) Did that set any precedents? But, have to admit, that possibility scares me.
So, I say, get going with the inherent contempt trials in Congress. You want to see Rove under cross examination, write your Congressperson! Want to see AG in the slammer until the end of the session, write your Congressman. Not saying he will definitely end up there -a kangaroo court would not be good, but maybe the possibility would wipe the smirk off his face and focus his mind. Won’t be able to hide behind Cheney/dub no more. Inherent contempt trial. People gotta pay attention to that. And as I said, the pundits and teevee news courtiers will go total bonkers apeshit (maybe even they’ll go batshiet!). That might be a good thing.
Any reason not to start inherent contempt proceedings, like, right now?

Are you kidding? The Repunklicans will play the fact that his wifed died on 9/11 and the MSM will run with it for all it’s worth. Remember the MSM wants “bipartisanship”. The Dems will be brow beaten in confirming Olsen.
Ted Olsen looms large in David Brock’s Blinded by the Right. He and his wife and, IIRC, B Comstock, were all Federalist Society members who were well aware that most of what they were laying on their peeps about Bill was bullshit but layered it on thick anyway.
He is very, very, very full of shit. You’re right, just the kind of nominee dubya goes for.
Cheney was hunting in Maine?
I totally agree JMohr @60! Your questions 1 and 2 are awesome and should be repeated by Democratic talking heads again and again. The Democrats to use other elements of persuasion.

Dr. Hillhouse has this to say today – Exclusive: Intel Outsourcing at Heart of Gonzales Controversy:

LS @ 61
It’s hard to imagine what it would be. He has a seizure before and they blamed it on the Democrats for being so mean to him in the hearings. I am sure that he was given a thorough examination and if there was a medical condition they would have found it.
I chalk it up to the cognitive dissonance of trying to actually believe Bush’s bullshit.

Predictions are really hard, especially about the future, according to my favorite Yogi. (Berra) On the other hand, losing the impeachment case would take a monumental amount of fuckery covered by huge incompetence. Even if R’s didn’t cross over, it would be obvious to all that they are on the side of criminals. IMHO.
On the issue of the role of emotion in politics- sure it’s important- and when ya come right down to it- when we say “emotion” we are usually talkin about fear.
Dems run on fear that goopers will undo social security for example.
Goopers run on fear that dems will raise taxes.
For years goopers ran on “dems will take us to war” but that one’s been reversed recently
“The commies will get ya has been replaced with “the terrorists will kill ya”
If yer not in the fear contest- yer not in the game.
“goopers will kill yer kids” is a good one- but the volunteer army has taken the edge off of that one.
For some reason few want to tell the story of Clusterfuck’s consignment to political hellfires after 2006- it was his social security plan what did him in.
Funny thing: “So help me god” isn’t in the Oath of Office given in the Constitution. Just how many words can one add/remove/change before it’s not the same oath? In fact, I count only one instance of the word “god” in the Constitution.
Oh, and for the xians in the government who have sworn oaths god, funny how the don’t seem to have read what they claim is their favorite book:
Matthew Chapter 5 (aka Sermon on the Mount):
5:33: “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not
swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’
5:34: But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s
throne;
5:35: nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the
city of the great King.
5:36: Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white
or black.
5:37: But let your “Yes’ be “Yes,’ and your “No,’ “No.’ For whatever is more
than these is from the evil one.
(From my understanding, christ is ToG (the one god) religion v2.0 and trumps all that came before him.)
So, according to this, xians should be considered to be, according to their own mythos, under oath ALL THE TIME, and this nit-picking about “only” lying on teevee (”We are not performing warrantless wiretaps,” “I’ll fire the leaker,” and to paraphrase, “I’m not sacrificing Rumsfeld.”) the leader who talks to the god of abraham (as does, reportedly, UBL) is a serial sinner and apparently serves the evil one.

LS @ 62
They probably took him to the hospital to find out if there was something other than low blood sugar involved. My guess for high probability would be a blocked artery (or more than one). If he’s had this happen before, they’d almost certainly want to run tests, because the probability of something physically wrong is higher.

The Democrats have to stand up and DO something, not just put together piecemeal legislation that may or may not be signed by Bush and then ignored. And by DO something I mean one thing that they can all get behind, that is popular and like you said, CHS, has the ability to get people fired up.
Iraq may be the big issue, but that one isn’t going to be the one that does it. It’s just too much…everything.
Impeaching Gonzales would send a clear message that they are standing up to the corruption and chronyism of Bush. There is no way that Republicans could get behind Gonzales in front of a camera – that is clear already.
The simple message that you mention, CHS, should be that Gonzales committed crimes. No waffling on how he “misspoke” or crap like that. He committed crimes. He perjured himself, over and over and over again. How can you have an Attorney General that lies? That’s simple, isn’t it?

along with an emotional message: “We gotta stay in session, cause we can’t trust the President.”
Tauscher is sending out e-mails that say impeachment is only for after office holder is convicted of a criminal offense, so that is why she doesn’t discuss it. It is on Daily Kos front page today.
People need to contact her office and set her straight. Beside being totally incorrect, it is close to 100% buying the GOP line of the Clinton impeachment. You can remove a President for unnpaid parking tickets, but not corrupt pardons to obstruct justice. The reactionaries have been creating an absurd illogical narrative that will end up with no one ever being able to anything, unless some one drops by the Congressional leaders’ offices with a smoking gun gift wrapped and with explanatory notes. Why is Tauscher peddling this stuff? Why is this Congressperson so ignorant of government?
I think the Democrats should be very aggressive. AG said twice last week ‘there are no rules’ I found those lines so offensive that I thought they were a good basis for his removal in themselves. But I didn’t notice any comment on them by the Very Serious People on teevee. Well, I don;t like those kind of rules, but if those are the rules, now, those are the rules. We should make the best use of them to set things right. We got some votes in Congress now, so maybe we should use those rules if the other side is.
“Mr. Leader, Why have you determined to stay in session during the August recess?”
Sen. Reid: “You know, ‘When the cat’s away, the mice will play. We were elected to do oversight, not vacation in Maine.”
I wish.
“Go for the gut and the heart first.” That’s what I try to do. And back it up with a bibliography. Sometimes it makes some folks angry. ;0)
So what happens if Roberts does have something and needs an operation? What then? How does the SCOTUS run in the meantime? It would take some time to recover I would think and then there would be the question of his mental acuity afterwards. Let’s say he has and operation and he successfully recovers but isn’t quite his old self so to speak? Lot’s of questions.
Christy if you’re lurking …
On the topic of communication and on the larger issue of framing; I had a comment about the repeating of the narrative about the spying program that was brought up in the AG hearings last week that you might be interested in here, which I think is pertinent. It’s not meant as a criticism of anyone but a helping hand

I’ve seen – elsewhere – a comment that the letter was almost certainly written by a staffer, probably by an intern. Tauscher should know better (probably does), but I wouldn’t bet that everyone working for her knows better.
What she should do is apologize for it, whether she wrote it or not, because she’s responsible for her staff.

Correct! Thanks!
The Repubs are dying to get Hillary nominated, so that we they can spew Whitewater, Monica, and Marc Rich 24/7.

Dubya could let Clarence Thomas vote twice in the name of national security and all that is Holy and good. The MSM would roll over like a puppy for it.
A lot of folks are just too darned busy trying to make ends meet, in this wonderful economy of ours, to pay attention to what’s going on. And the GOP knows that.

Gillen (yes, that is his name) is a very nice young man. I made my phone call, too. Thank you, Congressman Inslee.
Great post, Christy.
I have read posts similar to this one at FDL, and each one on this topic always adds a new perspective to the language demcrats need to sue to appeal to the general public, and is necessary reading for democratic staffers. There is a marked difference between winning elections, and providing government services. The dems/progressives have the governing down, but need to sharpen their elbows and incorporate this type of thinking for PR and elections.

Roberts is by far the worst of the gang of four because he comes across as “normal and likable”. Alito has that Bjork quality, Nino is wacky and Thomas is stupid. I think it was John Avarosis who speculated on Roberts and his “instant family”.
LS @ 104
I hope they’re stupid enough to do that. It may stir up the 28 percenters, but despite the wall-to-wall media coverage, that crap wasn’t popular with the rest of the country the first time around, and if they think it’s going to distract from their debacle in Iraq and stagnant wages, they’re dreaming.
Oops! thanks above. Andrew Johnson was impeached but not convicted. I’m getting all confused by the political drama going on.

I wrote this downstairs but everyone was already gone and it’s a great point, when we call our senators please add this type of dialogue to the conersation and ask them to point this out at the hearings;;
I REALLY think we need to start calling these programs what they are’
they are programs that are designed to steal
they steal our information, they steal our corporate secrets, trade secrets that we’ve aquired through the investment of our time, they steal our contacts, our sources
these programs give the listeners heads up on where we buy our product, what we will pay, what we can bid
the programs steal our methods for manufacture
that’s just the tip
the programs also serve as blackmail against political oponents
for instance, someone like me might ask;
HOW THE HELL CAN NANCY PELOSI STILL KEEP IMPEACHMENT OFF THE TABLE?
and the answer MIGHT be, the president has stolen information about her that she cannot allow made public
now, that’s entirely speculation but the point is made
THAT is why there needs to be a warrant
all the president has to do is show that he is not stealing and a warrant is granted
yet he refuses to demonstrate he is not stealing
now, THAT is the metric we need to use in conversation

Your too kind. The “elders” aren’t distracted – they either don’t care b/c (1) cleavage (writ large) is more entertaining and entertainment is their business, or (2) they’re gladly performing their role as part of the conspiracy to keep the cocktails and cocktail weinies flowing at their endless happy hour. Regardless, the CM doesn’t seem to have much effect on public opinion these days (how ’bout those 2006 elections?)*
As for the dems? Sure, better MARKETING would be great (and doesn’t even require genius), but as the 2006 election proved, sometimes you can just let the other side destroy themselves with their math skills – who knew? Doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be nice (or good) if the dem’s did stop listening to the cocktail party circuit consultants, but doesn’t mean it’s necessary to win an election (see 2006 again).
Shorter me: Not being repugs is a very compelling narrative, and it doesn’t matter what the CM (your MSM) says – somehow, the vast majority of people know that repugs are teh losers.*
_______________________________________
* The CM certainly supported Chimpco in the last election cycle, and that didn’t work out well at all for the repugs. Same thing here. The CM is dead in that regard.
This was a guest comment. Yes, it was repeating myself, but I’ve learned how to do it with fewer words.

Brain lesions? epilepsy? Why didn’t we know during the conf hearings! Tsk. For shame.
Benign is in the eye of the beholder. The VA uses it a lot. I have supposedly “benign” seizures from head injuries. Try having one at work…
Benign idiopathic seizure.
This reminds me of the comments made after Ariel Sharon had his “mini-stroke” – as I recall, the official word that came out was that he’d “suffered no ill effects” – like fun he suffered no ill effects. Those of us with elderly relatives who have had TIAs will tell you that any of this “benign” brain activity is cumulative. In the case of TIAs, the official word is that the effect is “mild” and that there are “no long term effects, which is garbage — over time, it causes Multiple Infarct Dementia, which frankly is absolutely horrific. It is my understanding that this is Justice Roberts second incident. The first one was in 1993 and I saw an article which quoted a former coworker who drove him back and forth to work for months after it happened. Then. So, they certainly did not think of it as “benign” in 1993.
Christy Hardin Smith,
I THINK THIS EVERY DAY. I WRITE THIS SENTIMENT WEEKLY IN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
But you said it so succinctly.
Democrats–we need to learn to FIGHT.

Hoo hooo, that’s funny. Now you’ve got me all falling down and writhing on the ground laughing. Haw haw haw.
That’s like claiming Bush is strong on ‘freedom of speech’ because he just knows that somewhere some time he’s gonna say something really really stupid.
:-)
hackworth @ 66
Well, if that’s what happened we can certainly thank God that Roberts wouldn’t have any problem with his work, since he doesn’t ever have to deal with numbers or letters.
Prairie Sunshine @ 121
That’s really sad. He seemed, Gooperishness aside, like a pretty nice guy. This will not look good on his resume.
Incidentally, now we see Roberts might be having trouble with his brain, Cheney recently went in for a new heart and Bush had a colonoscopy (for what?). What kinda crazy Wizard of Oz story is this? And, which one plays the ‘wicked witch’?
TeddySanFran @ 128
But, the crucial question has to be, is Stevens wearing his lucky tie and running to escape across “his” bridge to nowhere?
What’s the matter here? Can’t a Gooper even depend on his buds in the WH to intervene and prevent the FBI from interfering in a state’s rights issue?
Something seems to have broken loose in the entire Gooper world?
I wonder, who was with Roberts when this ’seizure’/’falling down’ happened? I mean, was he supposed to fall in the water while having the seizure or were they returning home from a boat ride or what?
Many years ago, when I was in the military, walked into an intellegence operation (yes, I did have a clearance) and I saw a large sign in the lobby. “Grab them by the balls and their minds will follow.”
The Dems need to do a little more of that. Hillary forgot that lesson when she pitched health care the first time. Hope she’s learned it this time.
MarkH @ 219
By Jove, I never thought of that one. Perchance, Roberts is to er….liberal for king George. Puts me in mind of a James Thurber story, though I forgot the name of it, where the punch line is “Oh, my God, he fell out the window.”
“Keep placid.” What is that supposed to mean? The implication is that the pictured female worker must be suffering from, or threatened by, some lack of placidity.
The style of the poster, and the industrial equipment on which the she is working, suggests that the worker is from the Rosie the Riveter cohort of women working through the war for want of a man to do the same job.
We might thereby conclude that our female is anxious and lonely, lacking male companionship. In short, she needs to keep her sexual tension in check.
Many products and procedures have been hawked as cures for that disease. Vibrators (operated by male doctors), pills, psychoanalysis, and (I think) cigarettes can all help suppress that ache.
But to suggest that the best path for women is to keep placid? That moves beyond paternalism into the territory of insult. No grown person outside of Orwell’s 1984 needs to be subjected to such condescending claptrap.
Christy:
From my experience as a trial lawyer, your observation is absolutely true when trying to persuade jurors — emotional logic rules the day.
The mistake is thinking that emotion and reason are somehow divorced from one another — they are not (best example of this — ask what a mathematician means when they refer to “an elegant proof”).
Another mistake is that “appealing to emotions” is frequently equated with pandering to emotions. But we are emotionally smart enough to recognize when someone is appealing to emotions to the exclusion of logic. The key is to put them together, but to have reason serve the emotional truth you are selling.
THEY HAVE BEEN STEALING THE ELECTIONS.
The suggestion that Democrats need to work on their agitprop ignores the fact that ALL THE MEDIA BULLSHIT IN THE LAST TEN YEARS didn’t elect Republicans.
• It elected DEMOCRATS, and then Republicans stole the vote with their caging lists and rigged electrovote machines.
The war in Iraq is the direct result of a COUP, not some kind of loss at the polls. And the supposed poll on the approval of Congress has NOTHING to do with that.
How many Dem incumbents have lost their jobs in the last ten years (excepting the ones removed through VOTEFRAUD such as California Governor Gray Davis)? Basically very few.
So the suggestion from the gang at Main Rhetoric that their new ‘Demoscat 2008′ will clean up the rank, unsophisticated smells leading to those nasty election losses is countering, happily, by the fact that it was the folks at MAIN JUSTICE who screwed Democracy (and it’s crats) in the hump, not the finepoints of manipulating public consent.
When we get over the spin on that, the equation gets far easier than the Beltway and Muffled Media myths about elections going to better argument. The demographic is on our side of the policies, and people make choice of legislator in a situation that is often nearly random. Since the demographic favors our side, our values, our topics and purposes, we win elections — not on message, but on identity.
That’s why they have to steal them. They steal elections because their policies are deeply unpopular and the only way they can establish them is by tyranny. Message has nothing to do with it beyond being a bit of lace on the thug’s underwear.
Of course, the WaPo has completely failed to diagnose or notice the STOLEN ELECTIONS, it has heard very little or nothing about caging lists, about twenty hour waits in line to vote, about grossly illegal electrovote machines. It didn’t notice that Bush didn’t win Ohio.
So they shovel this pseudo-intellectual David Hume spin instead.
And if you believe in David Hume-spun WaPo, and you too have not identified the TRUE reason for Dem losses since this coup (which arguably started in earnest in 1998), then you can find the WaPo’s deception that people vote passions pseudo-intellectually satisfying.
Mobs vote passions. WaPo works for Louis XVI, so they blame mob passions for everything. And to royalists, pseudo-royalists, to ascribe pseudo-intellectual explanations to the actions of the mob is what we would expect.
Don’t blame people for the crimes of the royals in establishing their tyranny. IF THEY COUNTED OUR VOTES, WE WON, EASILY.
NO, THAT WOULD BE THE WASHINGTON POST THAT REFUSED TO TELL MANY STORIES … about the Brooks Brothers Riot, the complicity of Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy and the damned departed others. They didn’t tell us about the many oddities of Nine-eleven, about GHWB having breakfast with Bin Laden on that day, stuff like that, and — oh yeah — the vote fraud that put these ‘obvious bastards’ into power with their help.
Every dog in DC has pissed on that Post. And with good reason.
Which was why he WASN’T ELECTED EITHER TIME.
