For your reading pleasure and consideration:
– I’ll be doing Sam Seder’s Show this afternoon at 5 pm ET/2 pm PT — with Sam’s other guests, Atrios and Digby. Now that sounds like some serious fun, doesn’t it?
– Speaking of Digby, this is an excellent smackdown of the Beltway Enablers Club.
– Bill Kristol doesn’t like it when people ignore his dictates. Nothing like a public tantrum to expose your inner child, I suppose. Here’s a question for Mr. Kirstol: when the President of the United States has conservative bloggers over for a regular Wurlitzer tea party at the White House, what do you call that? (Other than marching orders for the lock-step messaging machine when it starts to go off the tracks, I mean?)
– In which Bonddad freaks me out about my retirement savings and investment portfolio, as well as about the economic future and well-being of my child. Eeep.
– Pam Spaulding has an encounter with the people who like Dubya. And doesn’t spew her coffee (that she admits, anyway…).
– Wolcott has some choice thoughts on the amplitude of the now-copnvicted Lord Black.
– Crooks and Liars will have a live chat with Michael Moore today from 4 to 5 pm ET.
– TBogg, as always, hits the sweet spot.
So, what is catching your eye on the blogs or in the news today>

Good afternoon!

“In which Bonddad freaks me out about my retirement savings and investment portfolio…”
Yeah, looks a hell of a lot worse from someone my age. Save enough to retire? Looks more like dying quietly at one’s work station in order to keep the household afloat.
Thanks for all the links. Bill Kristol is a flogger!

You know, this Youtube debate thing is such a set up. Videos handpicked by CNN…
Guess what? According to CNN, Homelandians are not all that worried about the Iraq occupation…
One video of a man with his two sons…the one young son, about 10, asks what are you going to do about global warming — If you don’t do something, we will have to swim to the mall…snark already in place!
Haven’t heard any talk about the invisible hurricanes today. It’s a story I found fairly infuriating.
Hi all… trying to catch up on things (NOT) and upload my vacation pictures… Got some great ones for you Christy…

That’s my plan.
McConnell said on MTP this morning that the US doesn’t torture, it just wants the bad guys to think it does.
Hmmm….it seems the tactic is to act like the baddest mofo, hardass, kick-butt, controlling, winning, manipulating, fearmongering threat the world has ever seen…or I’ll blow your house down…
Meanwhile…leaving a trail of mass destruction…so sad.
sangemon @ 7
I share your fury.
BBC is generally regarded as more fair than the American Press. Here are some facts regarding BBC reporting during the first six months of 2007 –
Headline selection for stories in relation to violent incidents is inconsistent. 15% of stories about Palestinian violence named the aggressors while 60% of articles about Israeli operations accused Israel directly.
Greater attention is paid to Palestinian voices and opinions than Israeli ones. 19 out of 23 articles and picture series capturing the “man on the street” perspective were from the Palestinian viewpoint.
Laura Flanders, C-SPAN2, is arguing the the Ds are ineffective. Don’t we just know it!
Over at Kos Kagro X sez:
Some day soon — and that day may even be right now — being outside of what the Beltway Dingbats considered “respectability” during the greatest failure of political and journalistic conscience in American history will be a badge of honor and courage as coveted as the ability to claim membership in the French Resistance after World War II. You won’t be able to survive politically without it.
Sing it, sisters and brothers! That song bears repeating.

“The playboy hoodlums hate it when the grown-ups make them straighten out, and their decadent parents always try to step in and pull strings to stop them. But as with so many other Republican establishment misreadings of the public mood, they have made the wrong call.”
I think the Democrats are “misreading the public mood” also. The Americann public want accountability!
If Gore declares in November I think he will roll over Hillary, Edwards, Obama based on his solid stance against the invasion, the fact that he won in 2000, and his willingness to allow the world to see his deep and sincere concern about the enviroment.

Justin Raimando on Russia, U.K.
http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=11320
“The anti-Russia campaign started when Putin declined to join the “coalition of the willing,” and you’ll no doubt remember Richard Perle declaring the Russians ought to be kicked out of the G-8 for their impertinence. This was followed by Dick Cheney’s broadsides aimed at the Kremlin. The editorial boards of newspapers in the Anglosphere didn’t need much prodding to add their voices to the chorus, particularly the British tabloids, who, with their usual regard for facts and evidence, took up the Litvinenko affair with shameless shilling for the Berezovsky version of the still-mysterious events surrounding Litvinenko’s death.”
selise @ 26
On top of that Liebermann stood on the Senate floor and repeated lies about an Iraq/9/11 connection, and a trunk full of unsubstantiated claims about Iran.
Nah no agenda here
Lieberman should be forced to register as an agent in the employ of a foreign government. I’m so sick of my party handling this man with kid-gloves. Strip this man of any responsibilites within the Democratic Party. Imagine; this oily character is still allowed to caucus with the Democrats.

Hugh’s Huge List!
LadyPups And GentlemenPups:
All together now, let’s say “We’ve been missing something? What oh what could it be?”
The Debt Ceiling.
Bonk!
Bonk!
BONK!
Those are the sounds of the entire Appointed Bush Administration and Covert Cheney Administration hitting the debt ceiling.
First, here is a lovely piece by MikiKatz at The Next Hurrah on the subject.
And she left out a small but relevant point: the majority of TNotes and TBills are bought by Foreign Investors, mainly national banks (their equivalent of our Federal Reserve). Chimpy can’t simply tell the Treasury, sell the TBills anyway or I’ll have you sent to a black site in Rumania, cause even if they do nobody will buy. Congress will say, “Invalid Paper, we’re not paying interest on it or returning the principal. U.S. Treasury Junk Bonds.” To quote M from James Bond, No Thank You!
And this is National Debt, not appropriation bills. Bush cannot easily say, even with MSM assistance, “They’re not funding the troops!” because Nancy and Harry can say, “We’d love to fund the troops, but you’ve spent all the money and we can’t give you any more until the Republicans stop fillibustering and you give us workable plans on a) how to bring the troops home and b) how you’re going to handle emergency government in case of another “terrorist attack”.
If Nancy and Harry have the cojones for it. The All Nighter may just indicate that they do.
NB: This is a great place to bring up all the war profiteering and wasted spending in Iraq.
Follow the money. Missile defense sales going up

I’m watching Russert interview Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence. Russert asked him why haven’t we caught bin Laden. His response should have been an insult to the intelligence of someone like Russert. It’s surely an insult to the intelligence to the American people and the world, if the administration wants us to believe this is why we have not captured him.
McConnell said in response that the reason we haven’t captured bin laden is because “its very difficult to capture one individual who wants to remain hidden.” He then goes on to further insult us all by saying it would be different if “we were looking for something large or tangible that could not be hidden.” What are we now, a nation of Homer Simpsons? I guess they believe we are that McConnell would say something so stick stupid.
First of all, law enforcement, every day, captures people who “want to remain hidden.” Criminals that have been on the run for years are eventually captured. Not all of them, of course, but that tends to be the exception when the law is looking for someone. In many cases they know exactly where they are for extensive periods of time before they bring them in.
International cooperation through organizations like Interpol and local police forces in foreign countries have helped tremendously in bringing criminals to justice, wherever they are. The reason we haven’t captured bin laden is because (a) we’re “fighting a war on terror” with the military, which is used to fighting conventional, set piece battles, and not even well versed in guerilla warfare, let alone the sleuthing required to track down people trying to hide. That’s not the military’s job, but it is what police organizations are good at, and yet we won’t use them to lead the effort. No, we want to make this a “war” just so Bush can be a “war president” for political purposes.
Russert should have stopped McConnell and told him, “wait a minute, we capture fugitives from justice all the time. The FBI’s ten most wanted list changes year to year, because the fugitives on the list are eventually captured, and we find them all over the world and bring them in. Are you telling me now that law enforcement doesn’t know how to catch people who, as you say, ‘want to remain hidden?’ Every criminal who runs from justice ‘wants to remain hidden,’ but that hasn’t stopped them from being caught.”
Russert should have been highly insutled that McConnell played him for that kind of a fool. Instead, he let that one by. I know even Timmy had to have realized what McConnell was saying to him. I think he knew not to follow up. That was said, not so much to fool and insult Russert, but to fool the public. That’s why Russert let it by.

Happy Sunday, Christy. I gotta say, this, from Harper’s, has me royally pissed this morning, even though it only confirms what I have long suspected: Republicans don’t care about squat except themselves and their reindeer games. (not the story about $100 laptops, the other one).
In fact, I’m so pissed I’m going to send this to the business reporters at the LATimes.

I hear all this business about the Democrats need more time to do what needs to be done. And perhaps that’s true. But one thing the Democrats can do right now, is to deal with Lieberman. And I am fully aware of the possible consequences of such an action.

Have not heard Feith, William Luti and Stephen Cambone’s names or crimes come up in a while.
“The bureaucratic change elevated the post of Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, which had earlier been held by Feith. (You remember, he’s the guy Gen. Tommy Franks, head of the U.S. Central Command, once called “the fucking stupidest guy on the face of the earth.” I repeat: There’s no love lost between these chickenhawk neocons and the military establishment.) Edelman acquired and continues to hold that crucial post.”

Phew. I don’t really know how I managed to catch part of it, but McLaughlin had both Arianna Huffington and John Podhoretz on the same program.
Arianna did a nice job, injected quiet lucid reason into the program, but there’s little that can be done with McLaughlin running so much interference for that delusional slob Podhoretz.
Thanks to everyone expressing appreciation for my list. The depths that this Administation plumbs have no limit.
Hugh @ 53
i wouldn’t mind the bias so much – if the primary committment was to honesty and truthfulness (as opposed to truthiness).
in looking at the article: the methodology is not described, the raw data is not presented and there is no way to confirm their analysis. i am left in doubt of the accuracy.

i would have liked it if none of them had voted for his irresponsible s.amdt.2073. and i would like for them to stop saying nice things about him on the senate floor.
otherwise, i’m not sure what they can do.
Back in the late 70s and early 80s, I sent money to help Natan Shiransky when he was at Perm 35 in the Soviet Gulag. I joined Helsinki Watch to help him and other oppressed Soviet citizens. Later, Helsinki Watch evolved into Human Rights Watch, which I still support. Natan Shiransky devolved into a very disgusting person. He’s been caught numerous times calling Palestinians “sand n*ggers,” according to my Israeli friend, Izzy Shamir.

Yes, the proverbial leopard that cannot change his spots.
The Republican Party will die with the likes of him, unable to do the work necessary to revitalize its brand or take it back from the fascist and fundamentalist radicals that have co-opted their party for decades. Winning a majority was so important that McLaughlin-type conservatives sold out their values.
(This is a warning to Democrats, though; our party has already had a near-death experience, nearly co-opted to oblivion. Take heed. A majority is not the end in itself.)
Rayne @ 60
Oooh! I have that TIVO’d. Will watch later, thanks.
I wondered this morning how long GWB would last before screaming “this war is over” were he forced to experience ten minute intervals of the same horror, pain, and death of our brave soldiers in Iraq. My guess is that sucker wouldn’t be able to last a minute.
Arianna has been on Mclaughlin Group the last two weeks and in spite of the difficulty in understanding her when she speaks fast, she is doing stellar work considering the circumstances.
That seat should be hers as long as she wants it, imo.

I am just curious about your personal political journeys from an outsider’s POV.

Eleanor is in her usual seat.. Arianna takes the lead but it’s about time Eleanor had the help she needs. I think Eleanor and John like Arianna’s grasp of the facts. Blankley does not know how to deal with her at all..)
I think Cheney would loooove to attack everybody in the world except maybe Stephen Harper’s Canada and he ain’t that certain about Stephen. But as long as the US can colonize Canada by subversion, that leaves extra troops for Iran, Syria, Pakistan, North Korea, Russia and any 25 more countries that don’t hew the Cheney Line, the Shooter’s picks.
NATO had a purpose and a mission, once upon a time, now it is just another brand of American Military Solutions R’ Us.

A tipping point that was 1999 for me when looking at the candidates I just felt I could not trust the king of the flying monkeys, is lack of intellectual curiosity and general lack of knowledge, was for me a warning sign. By 2002 his contempt for diplomacy and desire for war against Iraq, along with the propaganda drum beat, pushed me over the edge. Now with each passing day he becomes worst than I could have ever imagined.

I was raised a Republican in Washington state. My experience with Democrats when I was young – Scoop Jackson, Warren and Henry Magnuson, Albert Rosellini, Lyndon Johnson – was pretty negative. I voted for Reagan in 1980. He was the last major GOP candidate I voted for. Between 1980 and 1982, when the godsquad began their complete takeover of Western, Mountain and Southern states, and Reagan gave us HUGE deficits, I left the party. You might say that Jerry Falwell “saved me” – from the GOP.
I then became a Green, because the Democratic Party in Alaska, which was in power here then, was quite corrupt. Not as bad as our current GOP “Corrupt Bastards Club,” but almost. I finally started working hard for Dem candidates here last year, and joined the party officially about three months ago.
Nothing could ever make me contemplate becoming a Republican again.
AK -
Send that to the both of them; if it ever filtered down?up to either and were actually used, it’s language that, if the Amurrican people can’t hear and comprehend, we are well and truly scr*wed.
Eureka Springs @ 100
Yes, but censure is not impeachment.
theExile @ 98
AFAIK, LIEberman is holding the Democrats hostage, saying he will vote with the Republicans if they don’t do as he says. that will force a reorganization resolution and control of the senate will return to the rethugs. bye bye oversight and everything else.
This is why the Vitter situation is so important. If we can force him out, Governor Blanco will appoint a democratic senator and suddenly LIEberman is out of a job, although it would be best to wait until Senator Johnston is strong enough to be available for the organizing resolution if LIEberman defects.
Otherwise, the rat b*st*rd has us hostage until 2008…..

Yeh, that’s the rub and I have no such contacts………but surely to goodness, *somebody* at the Lake knows how to get it there. Hell’s bell and codfish, from your blog work, you need to be on some Dem’s speech writing team.
Long time Dem after being a-political and in Canada, struggling musician, now pharmacy researcher.
Surprisingly lots of Repubs in my workplace. I’ve ‘worked on’ 3 and managed to enlighten 2. The rest are hopeless for just plain obstinant personal tradition or they like the MUD-SLINGING Republicans who call Dems “weak” and whatever. They like the blood sport. They like to think they are superior somehow. Some can’t take the time away from scrapbooking to actually read a book (I keep a dozen in plain sight in my office I recommend whenever appropriate). The weird thing is that pharma company reps are pretty much Dems.

In Manhattan, in the week after 9/11, all you needed to go anywhere you wanted (including wrong way on one-way streets) was a black SUV, with darkened windows & a bubble gum machine on the roof. After seeing quite a number getting waved on thru barriers of all sorts, I said to some random stranger walking near me: “Gee, how long do you suppose it’ll take the terrorists to figure out they could drive a bomb-laden truck up to any building in the city?” I guess she was too raw from 9/11 to take my comment in the spirit in which it was offered.
The point: bad guys can also counterfeit badges.

Yes, I’ve liked Fisk in the past, but, ahem, how could any respectable “journalist” write about something he doesn’t know anything about, if your slack-giving excuse is accurate?
eCAHNomics @ 120
not completely disagreeing – it’s just that it’s one line that leads into a whole article about how the MSM sucks, so no wonder the bloggers are winning.

Tuning out and turning on is a good thing when HARRY POTTER is more important for FDL supporters than supporting your beliefs re a WAR!!!
I’m too old for this.
Goodbye.

Two questions:
1) Does censure only require a majority vote?
2) Can accumulated censures be used to create the pressure for the issuing of Articles of Impeachment?

I am completely with you on this. Harry Potter ruled for a few days here. Harry was FDL’s Anna Nicole Smith.

this is very important to do monitor NPR. NPR has been painted as a “liberal/Progressive” station. Yet if one listens closely it is just not so. Especially on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The statements that will tilt their reports towares Israel are very subtle. Linda Gradstein took some flak several years ago, and actually shifted for a while, but she has gradually moved back to a strong slant in her reports.
Why is it that NPR does not have a Muslim or a neutral reporter like Julie McCarthy (who is now in south America reporting). Julie really reported from the middle east in a fair and balanced way, NPR needs another Julie reporting from that part of the world.
Odd how many who consider themselves Progressive or liberals go extreme right (wrong) on the I/P conflict.
Wish someone would do a research project on how many of NPR’s quest were from the American Enterprise Institute before the invasion of Iraq. Tilted?
