The AP has some analysis of the growing sense of unease sweeping over the GOP Senatorial Caucus. The Fear is nibbling especially at the tiny little souls of Republican Senators up for reelection next year, but it is also starting to gnaw even the fetid innards of the useless Republican skin-sacks who have been installed in Washington permanently because our system is absurdly tilted in favor of incumbents.
You see, the Glorious War in Iraq is not going well and because of that nobody likes The Republican Senators anymore. This is a problem not least because nobody really liked them very much in the first place. Well, people liked John McCain, for reasons that have always rather escaped me, but nowadays he is as highly regarded as, say, Scott Stapp, only without the gravitas. Is a similar fate in store for such Legislative Titans as, perhaps, Norm Coleman, whose ability to portray himself as taking an Unpopular Stand because of his Deeply Rooted Principles is badly hampered by the fact that he is obviously an opportunistic cretin?
But nobody knows for sure what will happen. Only one thing is certain: GOP Senators are not quite the type of people who do a thing because it’s right. They do the right thing by accident or when they are compelled, and even then if they are not afforded the chance to engage in moral grandstanding they’ll find a way to weasel out of it.
Everything’s up in the air. Which is fine, if you enjoy wagering. So let’s go through the AP story and I’ll do my best to lay out the odds on the key contests.
Senate Republicans are growing increasingly nervous defending the war in Iraq, and Democrats more confident in their attempts to end it.
More than a year before the 2008 elections, it is a political role reversal that bodes ill for President Bush’s war strategy, not to mention his recent statement that Congress’ role should merely be “funding the troops.”
Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, made that clear Friday when he dismissed any suggestion that it could be November before a verdict is possible on the effects of the administration’s current troop increase.
“September is the month we’re looking at,” he said unequivocally.
Unequivocally? Mitch McConnell, leaving himself no weasel room? Odds that September is really and for true the cutoff date that will make the GOP Senators cave and vote for a timeline: 20-1, against.
It is not only the mood that is changing among Republicans. So, too, the rhetoric.
“Cut and run,” has largely come and gone as an insult to hurl at Democrats, as Republicans themselves contemplate a change in course.
That’s interesting: I have not heard “cut and run” for a while. Hmmm. But the odds that Republicans will give up on the “unpatriotic appeaser” smears are remote: 75-1, against. Logical contradictions have never bothered them before. Why stop now?
In this view, the main U.S. military focus should be on preventing Iraq from falling under terrorist control. One Republican senator, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the shift in talk of a military objective was a prelude to a change to a strategy that would pull U.S. troops back from a civil war between Sunni and Shiites.
This, I bet will happen anyway. We’ve already seen the rhetoric shift to “eeek, Al Qaeda! Remember them?” The new thing is a sort of Faulkner-cum-Basil Fawlty thing: “Don’t talk about the civil war!” 3-1, for.
But focusing attention on al-Qaida raises familiar questions: Were terrorists present in Iraq before the 2003 invasion and what would happen if U.S. forces departed?
According to several officials, Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, and McCain engaged in a brief, impromptu debate touching on that point recently at a private meeting of the rank and file.
Voinovich said the Sunni and Shiites in Iraq would together drive al-Qaida from their country if the U.S. were not there. McCain took the opposite view. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, noting that the meeting was private.
Odds that Voinovich will be the next spectacular GOP flameout as he flails wildly to look like a Serious Statesman and makes a total fool of himself: 2-1, for.
But here, of course, is where the real hot action lies:
It was only 13 months — and one election — ago that Reid was the one hoping to avoid a vote on a troop withdrawal. Then, Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Russell Feingold, D-Wis., angered Reid by insisting on a vote on a fixed withdrawal deadline of July 1, 2007.
Democratic strategists fretted about the impact on senators seeking re-election and challengers to Republicans in swing states.
The plan drew the support of 13 Democrats. Reid was not among them, nor were the Democratic presidential contenders currently clamoring for the support of anti-war voters.
The public, it turned out, was more unhappy about the war than the Democratic strategists understood. Despite their tentativeness, Democrats won control of the House and Senate in an election in which Iraq played a large role.
“Now it’s the unified Democratic position,” Kerry correctly e-mailed his supporters last week.
Will the Democrats in the Senate hang tough and force the issue come September? Or will they fold?
Can’t offer bets on that. See, we’re all in the game on that one. It’s our job to see that they don’t.
And as Pete Rose learned, you don’t put money on a game you’re in.

About Firedoglake
hi
Dos
hola
The Dems are not campaigning vigorously now on how much Bush is trying to hide.
the Scooter cover up,
USAs
Political use of administrative positions–now, perhaps, including refusal to permit DOJ discharge its duty to enforce congressional subpoenas.
Use of RNC emails
Warrantless wiretaps
This list goes on….
The public is fed up, but Dems should keep the heat on.
turn up the heat
Have you ever seen his high school yearbook picture, before he got all his cosmetic work done. Priceless, but can’t remember where I saw it. That’s one 2008 race that will prove entertaining.
Turn up the noise! We have to make the average person aware (somehow). I suspect that will require the bottom falling out of the economy, monetary pain always wakes the people up.

Here it is:

Alberto’s testimony — responses to some difficult questions that Leahy put in writing, so that AG could not say, “I don’t remember — should get the heat turned up a little. When is that scheduled for?
Evening all. I’m with Wangdangdoodle, let’s put a blowtorch to ‘em. I love the smell of roasting Goopers in the morning!
Evening, DrDick.
While there’s talk, there’s very little action. And the August recess is coming, which will wipe out any momentum that might have been building.
Will Reid have the guts not to adjourn?
Damn It! I want a Bonfire!!! Maybe then our Dems will feel the heat!!!

He got work done and still looks like that?

HowieKlein had a post a few weeks ago at DownWithTyranny where he disclosed that he and Norm Coleman had been classmates in school in Brooklyn. He stated that Norm was an a** then and hadn’t changed much iirc.
SplishitySplash………Good evening pups!
dakine01 @ 16
Some people work at being an a**hole, but for others it just comes naturally. It would seem that Coleman is a natural.
Hi, Lolo!
The clincher for me was Dick Mellonhead Chafe (sorry, Richard Mellon Scaife) calling Shrub a moron last week. We now know they are all on the same page (except John-boy McShame apparently), and the storyline will be played incessently across the Conglomerate Media for years to come:
“It was all Bush and Cheney’s fault, not Repubelickins in general! Those two aren’t really Repukes…we are so it’s OK to vote for us now. Really and truly (fingers crossed behind backs…)”
We cannot let them get away with this. It’s already started and will pick up steam. Our Constitutional Crisis, and the hundreds of thousands people killed in Iraq in YOUR name and with YOUR money have been caused by Republicans. Simple as that.
Excellent post, Thers – Welcome to your first nite of Saturday nites at the Lake. I’ll be your moderator this evening. If you need anything, just whistle.
bonkers @ 20
Evidence in support of your point:
Last night on Jay Leno, he said that the last time they did a colonoscopy on W, do you know what they found? His head.
Suzanne @ 21
Let me second that. I’m already a fan of your blog, so this is an extra treat.
You know how to whistle, don’t you?
I hear there is an Impeachment Walk next week. Conyers needs 3 more reps to sign on. YIPPIE!Linky

The dems also need to do a better job of educating the electorate on these issues. In my opinion, one way they can do this is to set some ground rules before they agree to go on the talk shows. They need to state that they will not engage in shout outs with the republicans. If their request is not honored, they need to politely explain that because the ground rules were not followed, they would be hanging up. They need to demand equal time to explain their positions. Let the republicans get together and shout if they think it helps their cause. I think everyone is tired of it and are looking for a more statesmanlike party.
BigMitch @ 9
Tuesday, should be much fun!!
RonD @ 19
Hi Ron D! (((hug)))
Hi all, from my perch on the edge of the Lake
Just imagine — DeeCee Democratic strategists being wrong!! When has that ever happened before?? (looking at you, Shrummy!)
Sorry off topic
So is giving money to the Democratic Party that wants to end the war supporting terroists? How do we know what supporting terroists is unless Bush tells us? Also what are the Democrats going to do about this?
OK, if anyone cares to teach me, how do you embed a link with something written over the actual url?
TeddySanFran @ 30
More to the point, have they ever been right? I’m beginnig to think there is something in the water there. Between the Washington press corpse and the Democratic strategists/consultants/shitforbrains, they all seem to be living in an alternate reality.
albert fall @ 4
What is the President hiding? is an all-purpose question that should get the public’s attention on Tillman, the USAttys, Scooter, wiretaps, executive washroom privilege, and everything else. It’s shorter than Howard Baker’s Watergate mantra “What did the President know and when did he know it?” which lends it to our short-attention-span cultu — ooooh, shiny object!! What was I saying?
Hi Thers!

Inherent contempt is so dramatic. Arresting the Attorney General, man, it has to make you hold your breath. Let’s talk about what if the Dems don’t have the batzim for this.
So they issue a contempt citation, and send it along to the USA for D.C. to present to the Grand Jury. Per instructions from King Shit-for-brains the USA says “No dice. Not gonna do it.”
Now what: Impeach the US attorney for the District of Columbia. (I’m starting to like this scenario.) Bush says, okay, I pardon Gonzo.
Conyers says, Not so fast, Georgie. Your pardon powers are for crimes against the United States. This is a crime against the House of Representatives.
Fred Fielding starts to feel a little overworked. Meanwhile, AG still hasn’t testified. Now, you got yer INHERENT CONTEMPT.
More work for Fred. Boy it sucks to be a republican.
For the Yiddish challenged: Batzim=cajones.

PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY DESTROYED BY FLOOD
Crawford, Texas — A tragic flood this morning destroyed the personal library of former President Bush. The flood began in the presidential bathroom where both of the books were kept.
Both books have been lost. A presidential spokesman said the president was devastated, since he was almost finished coloring the second one.
The White House tried to call FEMA, but there was no answer.

For those in need of honest reporting and actual facts about the conflict to help rebut McCain and his lies about the reality inside Iraq, there’s this Guardian article from a few days ago about the main Sunni groups coming together politically to oppose both the occupiers (us) and the al-Qaida fighters in Iraq:

Thers! Welcome to Late Nite,
Please forgive the OT and EPU’d but I wanted to get this out for folks who many not be aware of this site.
Sorry for being OT but are you familiar with The Hunger Site? It is a site where folks can go once a day and click the big yellow button and the sponsors provide food to those who are in need. The front page explains the purpose (scroll down a bit in your explorations).
There are five other companion sites with the Hunger site. After you click the yellow button, they take you to the Thank You page. If you scroll down a little, there is an update of the amount of food provided today. Then there are five more buttons before an update of the total amount of food provided yesterday.
You can click on each button in turn and will be taken to the associated site where another big button is waiting for a click. After the click you get another thanks page.
The other sites are:
The Breast Cancer Site (pink button) that provides free mammograms for poor women.
The Child Health Site (blue button) that provides health care to poor children.
The Child Literacy Site (red button) that provides books
The Rainforset Preservation Site (green button) that saves rainforest land.
The Animal Rescue Site (purple button) provides food for shelter animals.
It takes about a minute to click through all the buttons once a day (on broadband – dial-up can take a little longer obviously) and the small actions can help many others. I do it myself first thing each morning after checking my e-mail. I hope others will join me in making this a regular part of the day.
wangdangdoodle @ 54
back at ya!
LoudounLib @ 51
Actually, it literally mean huevos (eggs) and I think the metaphore is multi-lingual.
Getting 60 votes in the senate is as important as winning the White House in ‘08. Whenever Democrats are on TV, they should make a point of naming (republican) names. Keep repeating those names of the vulnerable republican senators until they become household words. Connect them to George Bush over and over until the average voter equates them with the President and his policies. Keep connecting the republican congress to the White House as one entity, after all it is the truth. The average american voter needs to be just as focused on the second and third lines down on their ballot as they will be with the first line as it is a presidential election.
sorry Mitch
face red, going back up on the banks
All right, let’s see if I can get it to work. Fair is fair; here’s a funny of Al Franken–not from high school though.
Never mind…

It will be a great test of the DSCC to see if they support Mitch McConnell’s opponent with real money. Collegiality always prohibited the opposition’s leader from being targetted, until Thune’s defeat of Daschle in 2004. McConnell is vulnerable in 2008, and Beltway Dems need to lend big support to his opponent. Will it happen?
Night dakine01. Sleep well.

Nite dakeine01.
dakine01 @ 72
Sweet dreams, dakine.
Republican support for this war is based on it being cost free. The war is unpopular and might start costing Republicans their job so now they “care”.
I think we can open up a new front on the cost war. The war costs so much we can nolonger afford to spend more money than France does per person and not insure everybody like the French do for less money.
The free market has been given a chance to be more efficent since Nixion the free market has failed. We cannot afford corporate welfare for rich healthcare CEO’s while our troops are still waiting for armoured Humvees.
How will we pay for this war Grover Norquist and George Bush hopes to use the rising National Debt “to get the Federal Government small enough so that we can strangle it in a bathtub.”
If you look at how the federal government handled the “cough” rebuilding of New Orleans well they have succeded. If this is what the American people want more war and no government for the people then elect a Republican.
If you want the War to end, if you want Healthcare for everyone, if you want the national debt to be paid for and have more money in your pocket thanks to lower healthcare costs, then vote Democratic!
He Pach & all — been putting one of the little ones down.
I said (and it disappeared on my daughter’s Mac) thank you for the great Kos link, lolo.
lolo’s link.
(testing Suzanne’s method for imbedding a link. Didn’t work for me cuz when I went to paste, everything under edit was grayed out.)
Think I might have missed a slash at the end. I’ll try again when I’m fresher-I tend to be a moron about learning such matters. Thanks all.

Hot and muggy here. And the rain continues. Never seen rain in July before, and it’s raining almost daily.
TexB @ 97
Actually this time they are a lot of fun because they are all nuts. Watching them trying to be more conservative than the others is hilarious.
TexB @ 98
You could send some of that up here. We are bone dry and ready to go up in flames.
Twain @ 98
Any of them remember what the word conservative means?
It would be a waste of time and money for democrats to campaign vigorusly on any of the issues listed here. The average voter would’nt have a clue what you were talking about. It’s the Iraq war, healthcare, and jobs/economy. That’s what the average voter understands and this is what matters to them. These other issues are too complicated and easily debatable. If the average voter is informed and watches news regularly they are familiar enough with these topics to have already formed an opinion. Othewise I think it’s best to stick to the clear black and white issues like Iraq and healthcare. The democrats should be able to win easily on these issues without wandering off into the dark forest of the DC beltway. If the average voter has a lower opinion of congress than they do of the president, why campaign vigorusly on issues that are so congressionally centered?albert fall @ 4
marshen @ 59
I like that a lot.

TexB @ 101
As I recall, it means dedicated to preserving elite privilege.
TexB @ 101
Doubt it, but it should get really interesting if Big Fred gets in. Don’t know what could happen then – how do they out-act him?
Betsy, do “regular folks” in Texas talk about the crazy weather as possibly due to global warming?
Twain @ 105
Is he that good an actor?
That depends on whether John Conyers invokes imminent contempt against Harriet Meirs.
(I’m not sure where the order for Josh Bolton’s compliance originates, House or Senate.)
If Conyers sends the Sgt of Arms to arrest Harriet Meirs, the Senate will have to begin operating on an entirely new set of assumptions.
Conyers, Meirs and Imminent Contempt are the lynch pins in this whole process. It’s the place of focus come Monday Morning.
TeddySanFran @ 106
Not that I’ve heard. People seem to expect “warming” to be the part they’d notice and not “climate catastrophe”

EPU’d from the last thread “How’d We Do this Week”? – I think, on balance, we tied the score, which is better than being down.
To cap off the week and celebrate our anniversay, hubby and I went to our favorite restaurant and had an unique thing happen. As we finished our meal, the waiter informed us that a gentleman wanted to pay for our dinner. We were surprised, to say the least, and a little embarrassed – we said no, but ask him if he would join us for coffee. Well, he did – a nice young man who turned out to be the chief financial officer of the 1st Natl Bank of Edinburg Texas, who said he does this kind of thing occasionally, just to spread the word and because it makes him feel good. And, a bonus!! He turned out to be a true Southern Democrat with whom we had a lively conversation about politics (don’t give up on Texas – scratch a Texan nowadays and you’ll find a democrat). Anyway, he was in San Antonio doing some training at their branch banks here – we talked farming (cantaloupes, markets, cotton) in addition to a whole range from Prez Bumpkin to impeachment. He still wasn’t sold on Michael Moore but promised to go see SICKO; maybe he’ll change his mind.
Just had to tell you Firepups about it – a nice way to spend an anniversary. If you’re ever in need of a bank, try his – his name is Michael McCarthy, nice Irish Catholic boy.
This entry has nothing to do with this posting – sorry, but I never finish reading your comments in time to participate and don’t know if anyone reads me. My last comment is in an earlier thread on impeachment.
Have a nice week – be reading you tomorrow.

Night dakine and eCHAN.

The book on him is that he is incredibly lazy, and those who have seen him recently say he is remarkably unengaged, which is consistent. It is a lot easier to be out than in, which, I believe, is a fact that Al Gore understands.

You have any clue how many jobs I have here? Paying & otherwise? Chicago will be a vacation no matter what.
Here are a couple of Rudolph Giuliani Quotes taken from his address at the 2004 Republican National Convention. The whole address should be re-read by all, found here.
*They heard from us in Afghanistan and we removed the Taliban.
*They heard from us — They heard from us in Iraq and we ended Saddam Hussein’s reign of terror. And we put him where he belongs: in jail!
*So long — So long as George Bush is our President, is there any doubt they will continue to hear from us?
*From — From the first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, to President George W. Bush our Party’s great contribution is to expand freedom in our own land and all over the world.
*I don’t believe that we’re right about everything and Democrats are wrong. They’re wrong about most things.
*I say it — I say it again tonight — I say it again tonight: Thank God that George Bush is our President.
*And thank God — And thank God that Dick Cheney, a man with his experience and his knowledge and his strength and his background, is our Vice President!
ccmask @ 124
OKAY! Can hardly wait to meet you guys!
Wow, DrDick, Mark’s post at Sirota’s place was frightening but encouraging at the same time. If climate catastrophe is post-partisan in Montana, the GOP’s embrace of polluters may sink it everywhere. I had no idea conditions in the Rocky Mountain states were so grim as described.
TexB @ 132
My bad! Enjoy, and take plenty of pics for us unfortunate pups who won’t be there!!! 8-)

After living through his tenure here and having known his current wife years ago….well, I’d just have to find another country if that happens.
I had a phone call for about ten minutes during the show and forgot to Tivo it. Will watch again tomorrow night at 11.

Of course! That is job #1. (Also calling in to HORN radio shows to earn my press credentials.) I’ll take pix of the food as well.

TeddySanFran @ 135
Yeah. We were coming out of an 8 year drought, but this summer has already undone all the gains we made in the last year. It is interesting (and something Sirota talks about a fair bit) that environmentalists and progressives are starting to make common ground with some of our traditionally conservative constituencies (outdoor recreationalists and ranchers).
Buenas noches, perritos.

If there’s any proof that the GOP is where low-info voters cluster, it’s Rudy’s frontrunner status. As soon as they learn he’s not the hero of 911, they’ll bolt. Most of his current supporters don’t know Rudy disagrees with them on everything but killing terrorists.
Fred’s waiting (til Labor Day, says Cillizza) in hope that GOPers fall outta love with Rudy the better they know him. Worked with the first two Mrs. Giulianis, probably it’ll work with GOP voters too!
Newtonusr said “If Dems are even breathing, Rudy should be done soon enough. If not… “
Bill Maher said on his new HBO show tonite that “Rudy will be president. Get used to it, he says….”
Not from where I am sitting, Bill.
Jane (nyc) @ 138
Thanks Jane. I am going to see if it is on at 10:00 (west coast) if I missed it I can watch it tomorrow on indemand. Jane you are the best NYC info person! Thanks for the dirt!
I danced around the subject of Ghouliani with my best friend on the phone the other night (she votes Rethug, but I still love her). She really surprised me by forcefully attacking him, and said that his actions on 9-11 would be expected of any big-city mayor in that situation. Perhaps the tide is starting to turn, in increments.
Loo Hoo. @ 143
Glad you got it back LooHoo.
Question:
Did the subpoena for Josh Bolton originate in the House or the Senate?
TexB, you got the press credentials, you sly fox? What food. Did I buy meals when I paid my registration? Does anybody know how many people are going? A schedule of events?
When I was a boy here in Austin in the early 60’s the tar melted on the roads this time of the year around here. The heat shimmered off the roads, the parched landscape wilted, it smelled burnt in the dawn. It is green around here now, I have tomato plants like the ones I had in Seattle, I’m not complaining, it is just quite unnatural for this region.
TeddySanFran @ 107
I had to jump in on this, they deny it is man made. They insist it is a naturally cyclic phenomenon & we are all alarmist nutcases. Al Gore is a charlatan or worse.
Loo Hoo. @ 154
You did buy meals.
And no, I don’t officially have my press credentials, but have been told by a KOS insider to not worry. Just sent them a note this evening asking where I need to go to pick them up after I arrive.
The New York Observer has a nice take on Bob Kerry’s thoughts about Rudy Giuliani.
Anyone who watches Chris Matthews on Hardball knows that he has a man-crush on Rudy Giuliani. It is going to be quite a challenge for him to keep it under wraps when he moderates the “Reagan Library GOP Debate,” as it is being billed. Here’s a telling moment to watch for.
Big Mitch predicts that amid the soft-balls that Matthews tosses to Rudy, there will be a question about one of his most famous whoppers. At the 2004 Republican National Convention, Rudolph Giuliani told the audience that while standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center, he spontaneously grabbed Bernie Kerik’s arm and said, “Bernie, thank God George Bush is our President.”
That’s a powerful story and better than the one he told during a 2003 GOP fundraiser. In the earlier iteration, Kerik is missing: “I remember that day saying a little prayer of thank-you that George Bush was our president.” Well, you could see why that story needed a little punching up. But still, it is an improvement on the original rendering.
On December 23, 2001, Giuliani appeared on Meet the Press. He told of the days following the attack. According to this first edition of the story, Rudy did, indeed, utter the words to his police chief. But it was not on September 11th. Rather it was on September 14th, by which time George Bush had finished My Pet Goat and found his way to Ground Zero. It was in this context that Giuliani stated, “Thank God he [Bush] is here [i.e., in New York.]”
The ironic thing is that Giuliani embellished and prevaricated to show a fabricated devotion to President Shit-for-brains. It’s not like people needed another reason to not vote for the guy. But watch Chris Matthews give him a chance to clean it up.
“… and tell ’em Big Mitch sent ya!”
LoudounLib @ 152
How many ads featuring pissed-off and/or sick firefighters, police officers and Ground Zero workers will it take to sink Figjam Guiliani’s campaign?
ccmask @ 150
Another attack on The Homeland would boost Rudy’s chances considerably. There’s no logic to it, but there’s no logic to re-electing the doofus on whose watch 911 happened either.
Hi persiflage!
Not to worry…my union (the IAFF – International Association of Firefighters) has been hard at work on that ;-)
lolo @ 127
We did! And we laughed our asses off. Maybe cried a bit too.
Subway Serenade @ 154
It’s a Conyers subpoena (House).
Loo Hoo. @ 155
All here.
TeddySanFran @ 149
Love your take on things, Teddy! (outside of NYC in NJ) You always make sense to me…just saying thank you.
TeddySanFran @ 163
Follow-up question:
What size handcuffs does he wear?
This video has been featured here at FDL recently, but it’s so good that we’ve got to give it another whirl:
Rudy – Urban legend
Mitch, those plastic flex cuffs work well no matter the size of the wrist.
Mitch, is there another Reagan Library GOP debate scheduled, or are you actually re-cycling your blogwhoring?
recylced blogwhoring appropos to #152
LoudounLib @ 161
Thanks to the IAFF!! Are firehouses watching the video in wonderment, or do folks already know the story?
It’s about half and half here, Teddy — but I’d wager the majority of my local is definitely anti-Rudy
Firefighters for Truth!
And it is not just firefighters who don’t like Rudy, TSF. Police died too along with paramedics. Many I worked with at the time blamed Rudy for the poor communication still unresolved after the ‘93 attack on 9/11.
bonkers @ 20
In an online forum, one of the old Goopers said, “OK, so Bush is a poopyhead. He’s not really a conservative. So we go on from here.”
–Poof–! Problem solved.
Well, I think I will call it a night. Take care and enjoy the snark.
LoudounLib @ 161
Hi Loudonlib! I’m pleased to see the demolition of The Ghoul is in such safe hands. Go get im girl!
Sleep well DrD
Suzanne @ 173
Exactly, Suz
g’night DrD, sleep well
Thanks Teddy.
TexB @ 126
You can cook using the internet? Hallellujah! I am saved!
Sign me up!
Night, Dr. D.
The question for me is do we want Rudy to get the nomination. I personally go back and forth on this. Most days I think he would be the easiest to beat. But other days, especially when I see him talking to small, friendly groups, I wonder.
Profiles In Courageishness
are you sure it’s not courageosity or couragitude?
Ian Welsh @ 181
Why do you think we’re online all the time? ;-)
Ian Welsh @ 182
Fried tubes, baked blogs.
LoudounLib @ 185
Where do you think I whip up all of your late night snacks?
lol TexB, it’s that convection internet ;-)
DrDick @ 10
Time to put some heat on your boy Baucus, Dick.
How fast is he backpedaling on carried interest?
Well, if he’d backpedaled that fast at the NFL combine, he would have been the first cornerback taken in the draft.
hi burns, thanks for the link to Raul Malo last night/earlier today, that is good stuff
(h/t Suzanne)
Ian Welsh @ 181
Set the flamewar to 375. Sometimes you have to watch it carefully, or the agonistoven goes into self-cleaning mode.
Suzanne @ 174
And still not resolved, Suzanne. Still.
BigMitch @ 184
Not even close for me….no way and under no circumstances would I want the country to be at risk of his possibly winning. There is no adequately describing how much more dangerous he is than Dubya.
Night, DrD
Damn, preview shows the del, but post doesn’t. Does this work? (Sorry folks, testing Suzanne’s patience).
GordonM @ 193
Is why I wear a kevlar lined and flameproof mod suit.
What didn’t show up, GordonM?
Jane (nyc) @ 194
Personally, he is more venal than W, and more competent. But he doesn’t have the family connections. It’s just so hard for me to imagine him having a chance to win. On the other hand, I can imagine F.Thompson with a chance to win. We have a history of incompetent actors succeeding in politics. To the great detriment of the country.
<Curse you> Suzanne! Foiled again!
Suzanne @ 196
I had “agonist” within del tags (Ian knows what I’m talking about), but I spelled out the . Then I tried spelling out the & in my spelling out. That didn’t work either.
Sigh. Just get out the plastic cuffs. I know when I’m done for.
Tammy Faye has passed away.
argosfalcon @ 1
Yay, ArgosFalcon!!!
Thanks for this post, Thers.
Evenin’, Pups. Reality-based life has been fun for the last 32 hours, but I’ve been missing The Lake…
See y’all in a few after I read the comments…
Diva
LoudounLib @ 191
My pleasure, LL. Glad you liked it.
“Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!”
Big Mitch: Personally, he is more venal than W, and more competent. But he doesn’t have the family connections. It’s just so hard for me to imagine him having a chance to win. Venal and more competent. Great writing, Mitch.
I keep updating my Chicago Events Diary over atDailyKos if anyone going to Chicago has never been before…
TeddySanFran @ 163
Thank you. This means that the House Judiciary Committee can proceed with Inherent Contempt against Bolton and leave Harriet with her knickers in a twist until they get around to her.
SEE? Gopers were saying that Harriet was the pResident’s lawyer. They can’t say the same for Bolton.
Ribbit 2 3 4…
TeddySanFran @ 203
ID fraud…? Call the cops!
GordonM @ 201
Were you trying to do something like
thatthis? WordPress strips out some symbols, even though it displays them in the preview. The ‘ accenty thing. No cuffs. Swearing is permitted :)
ccmask @ 206
I’ve bookmarked it for the fiance, who I expect to burn out on the YKos about mid-Friday, until it’s time to Ask The PrezCandis. Thanks again, very much, for putting this together.
Michael Moore will do a live chat on Sunday at C&L 4:00 ET.

Forgot: Thers, thank you for your inspiring post. It seems that you fit right in without a noise…good writing and illicit snark does that. Well done.
TeddySanFran @ 210
The fun part about conventions. Too much to do, not enough to eat, spending waaaaaaaaay too much money and the room parties. But that’s my experience with hotels full of anime geeks at Anime Central. I have no idea if the dynamic runs similar to YK2. *grins*
Suzanne @ 208
OK, so it’s
delI mean strike.Sorry, I’m an old programmer and have this compulsion to figure out how things work. But here in Maine, it’s way past my bedtime. G’night.
I actually have some sympathy for Tammy Faye and not just on the occassion of her passing.
Here’s my take. First of all, I don’t judge other people’s religion, given the fact that my own believes in such crazy stuff as the Red Sea parting.
In her religion, as I understand it, they believe that a person in favor with God will be rewarded materially in this world. When she told her followers that she had an air-conditioned doghouse, they LOVED it. Who am I to judge?
Her wealth was seen as an afront to Christian ideals of humility and sacrifice for the least among us. But that was not her religion.
Then the government came down on her, which had the effect of destroying her marriage. How can one not feel for her in those circumstances?
She wore too much eye make-up — I’ll grant you that. But I am no fashionplate either, so, again, who am I to judge?
I only watched PTL club once. On that episode she announced that she had given Jim Bakker a pair of matched giraffes for his birthday. The audience cheered wildly.
LoudounLib @ 167
Thanks so much for that LL, I’d never seen it before. Makes me angry and sad at the same time.
I am very much looking forward to a YKos that’s not in Las Vegas, a town with little charm and smoke-filled hotels.
I’ll say this for Tammy Faye — she seemed to have a lot of heart and guts during her final struggle.
TFS: will never forget your bumpbar with MoDo. Simply unforgettable. Good luck to you, big guy, this time. Those of us who are afflicted with poor incomes or good jobs will be waiting for your stories.
you’re welcome persiflage, they did a good job on that video didn’t they?
Tammy Faye raised a wonderful son who has a really cool church himself. She’s also a heroine to the gays, who embraced her when Jim was sent to prison. I will miss her.
TeddySanFran @ 217
Teddy, is that where the next YKos will be?
And the Portland Press Herald continues to cover complicit Susan [Dial M, for Murderer] Collins’s butt (in the Sunday edition, no less).
Ugh.
LL, YKOS was in vegas last year
Ah, thanks Suz — I’m not yet up on all things Kos ;-)
Wonder where YK2 will be next year. That will be just before the election. New Orleans?
Dee Cee actually might be a great place for a future YKos.
LoudounLib @ 220
It’s a great video. Honest, touching and real. If enough people see it, or a short version of it, the impact on the Ghoul should be devestating.
Loo Hoo. @ 225
That would be great!
Or Jackson, Mississippi, which is still not recovered from Katrina.
Loo Hoo. @ 226
I’d love that. My last convention in New Orleans was about 2 months prior to Katrina. Crowne Hotel–great fun.
Good nite all.
ccmask @ 231
Nice work on the Diary! nite
Re: Ghouliani, This article from the New York Times is linked to on HuffPo under the headline, Giuliani plays racial hardball. It is far from flattering.
good night, cc.
sleep well.
Sleep well CC.
LoudounLib @ 222
Last year we were in Vegas.
kirk, you bogarting the fog again?
Hi Kirk, did you see that you were named Surgeon General at Late Nite Firepups? ;-)
Night ccmask, and congratulations on the diary. A great idea!
I saw I was named “Moderatrix”, LL of the LateNite FB Group.
Yes you were, Suz :-)
LoudounLib @ 238
Uh oh … does that mean I have to clear my comments with Karl?
kirk murphy @ 241
If you do, you’re fired.
Oh no Kirk, not at all — we’re a real democracy over there!
Suzanne @ 237
exhales fog over Baker Beach towards Golden Gate
What, me foggy?
Suzanne @ 240
That is a compliment, right?
kirk murphy @ 246
uh, sorry to bring ya down, dude, but that’s like the uh wrong direction
I’m off to read Harry Potter until I fall asleep. See you fine pups tomorrow.
Night all.
TeddySanFran @ 34
Yes.
Suzanne @ 247
no worries – thought you were a narc for a second.
what were we saying?
g’night TexB, enjoy the book and sweet dreams!
As a woman who studied theology in Boston and went to Catholic seminaries in the 1970s, Tammy Faye did a lot to hurt women who studied theology. And it was a hard fight at the time. Megachurches and wives, much less gay (men and women) who were and might be ordained in a specific (protestant) church.
TSF: my condolences. To her son, my deepest condolences.
This is one of the few things I know something about:women and the church.
I respect you, TSF, and have for years. (anyone counting?) We may disagree. I hope that we may continue respect.
Pachacutec @ 42
And Yay Pach, too!
nice to see you,
both!
TeddySanFran @ 84
Rep. Sam Farr who represents most of Monterey and Santa Cruz counties signed last week and part of the gang of 15. California pups have a wealth of other fine congresscriters who will likely sign. Call, fax & email and we Golden Staters could likely & swiftly put it over the top and inspire other states.
OT – Was Dennis Kucinich invited to YK2 – I don’t recall his name being mentioned but then I’ve been away from the tubes a lot this week.
hey, npb, ccmask posted a link to a chicago events diary upthread you might wanna take a gander at – since you are going to ykos :)
and there is also a link upthread to the ykos schedule
Oh cr*p, it’s late once again here in EDT-ville…good night all!
Night LL! Sleep well and beautiful dreams to you.
thanks persiflage, and have a great day down there in Oz :-)
LoudounLib @ 244
i’ll drink to that!
Loo Hoo. @ 226
Ding!
And the next year I hope for a SF and/or east Bay venue.
mhpcr @ 252
I defer to the fact that you have given this more thought and study than I ever will. And I can understand that she was an easy character to make into a cartoon. But did she do anything intentionally to hurt women interested in serving God?
Suzanne @ 255
Merci beaucoup for the head’s up!
good night pups -off to bed
(have to set a good example for the Late Night Nation. ahem.)
sweet dreams!
you are very welcome, npb
Pachacutec @ 88
You are also an Officer of
The FDL Late Night FirePups
at fazebook.
new thread
I defer to the fact that you have given this more thought and study than I ever will. And I can understand that she was an easy character to make into a cartoon. But did she do anything intentionally to hurt women interested in serving God?
I never made her’s or anyone’s suffering into a cartoon.
Intention is not the issue. She and her husband bilked millions of dollars out of supposed believers into their own pockets.
Were fewer women pastors ordainded because of her televised participation? I don’t know.
Her presence was singularly unprofessional.
Thers – your post is great and sorry to be so late – first time I’ve caught up by reading from near the end of a thread. Been celebrating and working the phones with the news to my off-line friends in our local progressive circles. We’re all agreed Conyers will enjoy far more than a total of 15 and even a few terrified blue do congresscritters facing relection.
Will finish my Snoopy Dance and have a fresh brownie. Help yourself everyone.
i have forgotten where i picked this up:

Of course, September will not offer any relief because the politicized military command will tell Bush what he wants to hear.
The White House tells us the “surge” is working and attacks are down. The only problem is the reality, of course, is far different in Iraq according to the Pentagon statistics. It seems as we control one area we are just pushing the violence to another area. Most experts have said we need double the amount of troops for Bush’s strategy to work. We cannot bring in that many troops in Iraq unless we have a regional political solution and help from others.
Also our military being on Muslim soil is increasing the recruitment of terrorist and making Al-Qaeda stronger via National Intelligence Estimate reports. Our goal must be how to contain the situation while getting off the need of Middle East oil.
The problem is both sides are void on ideas and are playing politics. I hope lawmakers and the white House will bring forth solutions not just talking points
Daily attacks in Iraq hit new high in June
give some credit. some of these Republicans are ALMOST courageous.
Seriously what is the point of these Republicans opposing Bush or the war or torture or his abuse of power or any of his constant criminal acts? They BUILT this war, this odious policy , and Bush, from the ground up. What’s that? Their policies are ripping apart the country, befouling the world, and causing danger and hardship to Americans and others around the world? Please try to come up with a COMPELLING reason for them to change positions or act on them.
Lindy @ 50
Books, yeah… hustler and playboy.
It seems timely to post a list of those senators up for re-election in ‘08. Have you one or can you link to one? Thanks.
The hand wringing of those opposed to withdrawl or redeployment is laughable. What will hapen when the troops leave will happen no matter when they leave. They are fighting a 1300 year war now. What the hell is 50 years?
FYI: it’s “courageousness” not “courageishness”.
Joe @ 276
Watch Colbert much? :)
