It was a few days after his 29th birthday that I did the phone interview with an exuberant and focused Jonathan Powers, a newly declared congressional candidate for a competitive seat in Western New York, currently held by egregious rubber stamp Republican Tom Reynolds. A few upstate New York bloggers had first tipped me off to Jon last winter when he was running War Kids Relief and when I talked to him back then he was weighing the possibility of jumping into the race in his hometown against Reynolds, who had nearly lost (52-48%) last November after being exposed as a key cover-up artist in the Mark Foley scandal.
Even more than his maniacal devotion to music, Jon Powers is like the biggest booster you ever heard for Buffalo and the surrounding area. He was born and raised in NY-26 and he sounds like someone who wants to dedicate his life to seeing Buffalo come back as the thriving and vibrant regional hub it once was. The 26th actually is west of Buffalo proper– all the way to the Rochester suburbs– and has a slight Republican lean. Bush won there twice; he wouldn’t fare nearly as well today.
Three-quarters of the way through my chat with Jon, I interrupted to tell him how much he reminded me of another Blue America candidate, Illinois’ John Laesch. And it wasn’t just because they are both young veterans of the War in Iraq or even that they are dedicated progressives who were fighting in Iraq. I had asked Jon why he thought the voters would embrace him when they haven’t embraced Reynolds’ past opponents. His fervent answer could have come right out of Leasch’s mouth: “I’m embracing them.” Jon Powers thrives at the picnics and parades and small town meetings that encompass campaining in his district– and in listening to what his neighbors have to say about the way they would like America to change. “Tom Reynolds has demonstrated a blind loyalty to his party over what’s right for the country– or even over competence. That’s not the America I grew up believing in and it’s not the America I went to war for. But the America of extended family and community exists and it exists in places like western New York.”
Jon, who was an Army captain in Iraq, has a wealth of experience from his time there, but his campaign for Congress goes way beyond his frustrations with how badly mishandled the Iraq war and occupation have been. For his hometown, Clarence, and for all the small towns that make up NY-26, he believes what people crave is clear-eyed, honest leadership.
“People want to be part of the solution. The problem with the current leadership is that they haven’t asked people to become invested– not just in the war but in economic and social solutions. What made our country so great was our leaders getting everyone invested in community and solving our problems together.”
Jon has been in the spotlight of the public forum before. His was the unit profiled in the film Gunner Palace and Jon was one of the most articulate voices in Trish Woods’ gripping book What Was Asked Of Us– An Oral History of the Iraq War by the Soldiers Who Fought It. And, perhaps most important, Jon got used to the spotlight as the founder and CEO of a nonprofit organization called War Kids Relief. Their mission statement:
War Kids Relief cares for the children of war-torn nations, combating recruitment by terrorists and extremist groups through education, training, employment and other programs.
It’s brought him back to Baghdad a lot, as a different kind of warrior fighting a different kind of war. “Our military is supposed to be a tool in our national security, not the tool. From my work as a platoon leader in Baghdad and my work at War Kids Relief I learned about economic and social programs and how they are sometimes even more effective in adding to our security than the all-military approach.” Jon ran a sector of Baghdad inhabited by 50,000 people. Cheney and Rumsfeld had contemptuously rejected the 12,000 page reconstruction plan for Iraq– a bureaucratic turf war in many ways with the “do-gooders” from the State Department. Jon and his men did what they could for the area. “The relationship,” he told me, “was a good one. My men were eating in the homes of Iraqis and patrolling the streets in vehicles without doors.” It didn’t last. Eventually they were fighting the same people in the streets. Why? Jon told me the story of the piles of garbage and pools of sewage collected on the streets and how the U.S. authorities turned down a budget of $40 a week for cleanup, instead awarding a contract to Bush-friendly war profiteers, probably Halliburton subsidiary KBR, who just never showed up.
I know Jon, who describes himself as a “social liberal,” wants to talk with us today about the two most crucial issues in his district: jobs and healthcare. But before I turn it over to him, I want to ask you to join me at our Blue America page to help replace a veritable Bush clone with someone who wants nothing more than to fight for the interests of his extended family and for the country he loves. While doing my research on Jon I wound up talking with author (and blogger) Trish Woods. Greatly impressed with Jon, she generously offered to donate 10 autographed copies of her book, What Was Asked Of Us as a thank you gift to the first 10 people who contribute $30 or more towards Jon’s campaign. People who contribute $5 today will get something else– the satisfaction of knowing that I was so impressed with Jon that I will match every $5 contribution personally.

Welcome, Jon! Hi, Howie!
While we’re waiting for Jon, I thought I’d share this video I found after I sent Christy the post. It’s pretty compelling.
If John Laesch runs again, I hope he has more support from the PrairieStateBlue site this time! I sent some a$$istance, and received a nice Thank You in 2006.
howieklein @ 2
Howie,
slight correction – if the NY 26th runs from buffalo to Rochester, then it is east of Buffalo, not west…
Thank you so much having me. I am excited to be here as I fully believe the netroots are returning our government to what Abe Lincoln explained as “of the people, by the people and for the people.”
Welcome Jon!
Jon, welcome to FDL. It’s an honor to have you here. Can you tell us how you would have been different on specific votes than Tom Reynolds?
Welcome Jon, you are doing amazing humanitarian work.
Donations for your Congressional run:
I’m in.
WELCOME
Welcome Jon!
Hi, Jon! Thanks for coming out, I was wondering if you could tell us a little about how your experience in Iraq shaped your decision to run?
Tom Reynolds needs to be retired ASAP.
Like his predecessor, Bill Paxon, Reynolds is an
inside-the Beltway parasite, and, like Paxon, will doubtless become a
fixture of K Street when his constituents show him the door.
hello, jon and howie. i just wanted to drop by and say that those of us here in new york are awfully excited about jon’s campaign. jon is not only the man who will beat tom reynolds but is exactly the kind of smart, sincere and civic minded representative NY-26 needs. that district has been represented by deadweight republicans with seemingly no genuine concerns for their constituents for far too long and the district has suffered accordingly.
the people of western new york and the 26th deserve so much more. jon is going to be a great rep.
go, jon!
Morning, Howie! And Thank you Jon for visiting here today.
I just read your bio @ Veterans for America, and read the part about St. Hannah’s Orphanage. Did you find this tragic story all through your tour?
Good afternoon Jon and Howie!
Question for Jon – What is your opinion of the Surge, so far, and the military’s request for more time?
Is there any (any at all) chance that things are going to turn around while we are there?
Jon, what did you teach? I’m a CTA/NEA person so I’m curious. Also, will you speak at YearlyKos?
howieklein @ 6
There are many votes that I would have voted differently than Tom Reynolds as he has voted with George Bush over 90% of the time. Reynolds for the pharmaceutical companies on reimportation of prescription drugs and he also voted against bulk rates for Medicare. Obviously we also stand on different ends of the spectrum over Iraq.
Welcome Jon! to Firedoglake and to Blue America!
It’s going to be a pleasure to back your campaign.
And he’s got good taste in music to boot.
Thanks for your service and dedication.
I know jobs and healthcare are two subjects important to voters, especially in regions that haven’t done especially well recently. What do you see bringing jobs back to places like western New York in this globalized economy?
Also, as a former company grade officer who led enlisted troops into battle, what’s your stance on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”? Do you think younger soldiers are culturally ready to work with openly gay comrades without disrupting “unit morale”? And if so, what’s the junior officer’s role in setting the right tone to ensure gay troops are not discriminated against?
Allen @ 10
Thanks, Allen. My experience in Iraq was lifechanging. I was both disheartened by what I saw, which led to War Kids Relief, and frustrated by the loss of opportunity as a result of incompetence, mismanagement, and lack of leadership shown by our civilian leaders. It is time for new leadership in Washington and I feel that 2008 is a once in a lifetime opportunity to change the direction our country is going in.
Hi, Jon, thank you so much for being here. We appreciate all of our Blue America candidates, but those who have honored our nation with their service to the country, we appreciate even more.
What do you think it’s going to take to challenge the public’s notion that Democrats are weak on defense when the Republicans clearly think of our soldiers as backdrops for photo ops and toys to be broken and discarded?
I was also wondering if you saw Max Blumenthal’s short film, “Generation Chickenhawk”, and what you would say to College Republicans who claim to support the war, but won’t enlist.
Jon:
Welcome. I lived in Buffalo for 5 years in the 1980s and go up there often to visit friends. Your campaign will speak to those up in WNY who are fed up with the hypocrisy and secrecy of Tom Reynolds…and don’t get me started on him… But, there is plenty of time for that stuff to trickle out.
At this time, with the US mired in war in the Middle East, the US Military has been discharging lesbian and gay soldiers, including over 50 trained Arabic linguists working in such hotspots as Los Angeles and San Diego, CA.
What are you thoughts on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and if you are for allowing gay and lesbian Americans to serve openly in the military, how many days will it take you as a member of Congress to co-sponsor repeal of DADT?
Hi Jon,
Former Buffalonian (actually Tonawanda) — and a GREAT Buffalo booster — it’s the best kept secret of NYS. I hope (and will help) you soundly thrash Tom Reynolds!
egregious @ 7
Thank you for your support egregious.
HI…
I’m not in NY…I’m in the 13 th Congressional district in PA..I have a real do nothing Dem Congress Person A Swartz… I am not the only one who is profoundly disappointed in her. I don’t know who she represents but she certainly doesn’t represent this blue part of Montgomery County..
But she is not the only Congress Person like this..A lot of people are beginning to feel that a lot of the Dems we elected in Nov dont represent us…
How do you feel about the big f**k you that Bush has just given our Congress (unitary powers) And how do you feel about impeachment?
newtonusr @ 13
Thanks for talking about St. Hannahs. During my time in Iraq as a Captain in the 1st Armored Division our soldiers went from eating dinner in the homes of our Iraqi friends to fighting these friends in the streets. St Hannahs was a result of a destroyed relationship with regular Iraqis.
The soldiers enjoyed nothing more than playing soccer with Iraqi children because it reminded us what we should be doing in Iraq. Once that was taken away, we lost the human face to this war.
Jon, I am excited for your campaign. Thank you for taking on this fight. IT was really tough to hold my nose and vote Davis last time, but he was better than the current slime ball.
Davis was completely unacceptable on social issues. He was really a DINO.
A couple questions for you. Are you in support of gay marriage and partner benefits? If not, Why? and Will you support Federal Hate Crimes legislation and protection?
Jon Powers @ 24
Yeah, to bad the decider doesn’t believe in nation rebuilding after he bombs the crap out of them.
My Buffalo relatives had to hold their noses to vote for that EXTREMELY strange character who ran against Reynolds last time (and who got closer than Reynolds or anyone else expected).
Western New York people are the greatest – and deserve a real candidate to vote for this time. And, of course, we all deserve another good Democrat in the House.
Good luck, Jon!
radiofreewill @ 14
Interesting question. The surge continues to address only the military solution to this conflict. Our leaders continue to miss the economic and social solutions.
If you saw Sen Webb and Graham debating on Meet the Press last week, Graham continued to push the surge with an example of the Al Anbar solution as a model. In reality we did not surge the number of troops into that governorate, we instead helped the Iraqi leaders help themselves through economic and social solutions.
Mike Rogers @ 21
Mike, I’ve been amazed at the kind of stuff Reynolds has been able to get away with while his “mentor” Tom DeLay has been run out of town in disgrace.
Actually, check this out: http://www.tomreynoldswatch.com
It’s time that the truth be told…
Jon – Thanks for taking the time today…
It’s so great to see this generation of veterans and heores running as progressives and big “D” democrats. I’m originally from a military town and all my friends coming home from Iraq have the most unbelievable stories about the conditions over there. Is there one story you can share that summarzies the mess we’re in and how we can fix it?
Howie, wasn’t Reynolds involved in a scandal before the mid-terms?
I seem to recall being surprised he was re-elected…
Siun @ 17
Thank you for your support Siun.
Loo Hoo. @ 15
I will be speaking at Yearly Kos and sitting on a panel with Votevets. I hope to see you there.
As a teacher, my focus was Social Studies. I have taught at numerous levels.
Thank you Jon, for the work you are doing with War Kids Relief. The video was so moving that I made a donation to both WKR and your campaign.
Good Luck!
Hey Jon… Robert Harding from Medina. One question I’d like to ask you as a citizen (and not a newspaper intern or blogger!) is as a veteran in your own right, what were your feelings about Walter Reed and the way our soldiers and veterans receive medical care? I know it was pretty shocking for me to read that report by the Washington Post. What steps would you take in Congress to make sure our troops and vets get the best treatment and care?
Jon, be careful we know that Kos is full of hateful extremists….Not good Christians like Mitt Romney.
Congrats and good luck in your coming election campaign.
-GSD
Hi, Jon I want to thank you for taking questions…so let’s get back to what “radiofreewill” was asking. Where do you stand on the surge? Should we surge some more with even more troops, should we continue the current plan of rotating troops back in on longer deployments and losing them at a rate of 60 to 100 deaths per month? Maybe we should pull the troops out and let the civil war we started play out, letting the Iraq people decide their own fate?
Do you have a different option that I’m missing here?
ryno @ 30
In June 2003 I was a Platoon Leader responsible for a 50,000 person sector of Baghdad. There had been no sewage and waste pick up there for months and we drove through pools of sewage and piles of garbage.
Another PL and I attempted to implement a program designed with local Iraqis to get the pick up started for only $40 a week. We were denied because CPA had contracted out to an American contractor. The contractor did not show up all summer. 120 degrees, piles of garbage, pools of sewage, and angry Iraqis. In September we saw our first road side bomb.
The inability to provide basic services are a key failure of this war.
Jon,
Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.
I am a lifelong Democrat from Orleans County. After watching “An Inconvenient Truth,” I am growing more and more concerned about environmental issues. Could you tell us what you would do to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions?
radiofreewill @ 31
Yes, Reynolds was head of the RNCC (their version of Rahm Emanuel) and he helped cover-up, in a HUGE way, the whole Foley scandal. He allegedly knew Foley was molesting under-age boys but instead of doing something about it, he demanded that Foley, who wanted to retire, run again so they could hold the seat. That didn’t work out too well.
wangdangdoodle @ 35
Thank you for your support for both war kids and my campaign wangdoodle.
Respectful Dissent @ 18
Interesting question. I want to answer this with a story of a soldier I knew who I believed was gay, but obviously never asked and he did not tell. This soldier was the driver of what we called an 88 Wrecker. This machine was responsible for hauling heavy equipment.
In one incident, this brave soldier drove his wrecker into danger, hooked up a Humvee that had been damaged by an IED, and dragged it back into our base. Regardless of his sexual preference, race, or any other charactaristic, I would have served along side this man any day.
I feel the military is a progressive institution and our troops on the ground are open to serve with any man or woman who will bravely stand along side of them in defense of our nation.
Robert Harding @ 35
Hi Robert, great question. Our troops deserve a fully funded VA, but also a VA that is prepared for our returning troops with a comprehensive plan of care. Walter Reed is a scar on all those in the leadership in this nation as they failed to plan for the care of troops just like they failed to plan for the reconstruction in Iraq.
Sir,
My husband was a Vietnam vet and a POW, who was tortured by his North Vietnamese captors. He suffered from his injuries for over thirty years, until his fatal heart attack two years ago.
Thank you for your service.
Would you, given the opportunity, support, co-sponsor and for the Restore the Constitution Act? This bill has been introduced in the House by Congressman Jerrold Nadler as HR 1415, and referred to the Armed Services Committee. It would restore Habeas Corpus and the Geneva Conventions as the law of the United States.
With gratitude,
For Dan,
Heather
Our government tells us we are in a low inflation environment, but the cost of healthcare and drugs goes up about 10% per year, how is this possible?
Jon Powers @ 42
An interesting answer back (and can we assume you’d therefore vote to overturn DADT?).
You framed it with another interesting point: despite being populated (especially in the officer corps) with many social and religious conservatives, the overall military structure is very progressive — free healthcare, affordable childcare, a social ethic concerned with everyone else and not just on the self. What progressive lessons have you taken from the military, and conversely, how do you think the Democrats could frame their message to an institution that is so tribally conservative?
I’ve already had my question answered though, so no worries if you don’t get to this one …
Sir,
I should have added that the bill has been introduced by Senator Chris Dodd in the Senate, as S576, and referred to that Armed Services Committee as well.
With gratitude,
For Dan,
Heather
Hi Jon and Howie.
Jon, if elected, will you support single-payer universal healthcare?
(salutes).
Chuck @ 39
Western New York we are the pioneers of alternative energy with the Niagara Hydroelectric Plant. We need to continue to invest in clean and alternative energy. I support the concept of an Apollo Mission or Manhattan Project attitude to ensure we lead the way in the development of this type of clean and alternative energy.
Bravo for throwing your hat in the ring against one of Bush and Cheney’s “rubber stampers.” I wish you all the luck in the world, and wish I lived in that district. The biggest question on my mind has to do with Michael Moore’s new movie which I recently watched. Regardless of whether or not you have seen it; if elected to Congress, will you support making sure every American has health care?
Jon Powers @ 51
Jon, Will you make global warming and Vice President Gore’s work a central platform in your campaign?
We in WNY, especially Niagara County have been the victims of corporate polluter rape for far too long. The last candidate was a pollution violator himself. Can we count on your support for legislation such as Kyoto?
Jon Powers @ 40
Thank you so much for the first hand analysis ~ I have no doubt that based on your ability to observe, understand, and report your experience in Iraq and make sense of it that you will be a powerful force in office.
Best Wishes and Go Get ‘Em!
Is there any hope to replace the 12,000 doctors that have left Iraq and the 2,000 doctors who were killed?
Jon-
Thanks for your support of your colleague in Iraq. I’d like to follow-up…
Do you explicitly support the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and if so, how many days in Congress will it take you to sign on as a co-sponsor?
Thanks!
Sandman @ 45
I believe the insurance companies and the health care industry has too much power and influence the current system. We need to put control of the system back with the patients, everyday working people. 40 million uninsured Americans is not acceptable, we need health care that is affordable and accessible.
Would you support ending other government programs to save Social Security and Medicare?
Since you were there and seem insightful as to how your own experiences reflect on policy, when did you first realize there was no plan to win this war? How did that affect you and your men? And since you were sent over there without a plan or proper training, what did you do get by?
Jon,
Orleans County is leading the way in growing and processing biofuels such as ethanol. But until we eliminate fossil fuels altogether, small farmers like myself are taking a huge hit every time we fill up our trucks and equipment.
Do you think that we are too dependent on foreign oil? Should we do more drilling here at home, in places like ANWR?
(sorry, I know that’s lots of questions)
Hi Jon & thanks for joining us.
I grew up in Buffalo, near the old UB campus. Is that in your district? I’m going back for a high school class picnic on 8/11 (Bennett ‘62), and I’ll tell everyone who’s in your district to vote for you. Reynolds only got reelected because of the October snowstorm, I am told.
Chacounne @ 44
Heather, first off, I greatly appreciate your husband’s service and your fortitude in standing by a man who must have under gone tremendous suffering. I am sorry for your loss.
As a soldier who served in combat, always at risk of being captured by the enemy, I am opposed to torture. America must reestablish itself as both the beacon of hope and leaders of the free world. If we are to lead by example, toture does not fit in that character.
Thanks for your service and for taking on the odious pedophile-enabler Reynolds, Mr. Powers. I appreciate your taking time today to chat with us at FireDogLake.
How will you vote on Federal Hate Crimes legislation? Can we count on you to support this legislation during your campaign and in Congress?
Thanks for taking questions, and the very best of luck in your campaign. We need more like you in Congress.
Jon, will you support Speaker Pelosi if she attempts to repeal Bush’s tax cuts for the rich?
ryno @ 57
The soldiers I served with had a unique experience in Iraq as we saw the clear evidence of the lack of planning. Crossing the boarder from Kuwait to Baghdad on our convoy into the war zone my platoon sergeant and I shared the plates from our body armor with the other soldiers in our vehicle to ensure we all had protection. So, my first night in Iraq I worried heavily about the planning.
Here’s what the wiki says:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Foley_scandal
Tom Reynolds
“The question of Reynolds’s role in the scandal nearly cost him his seat in the November 2006 election. According to conservative columnist Robert Novak, Reynolds convinced a reluctant Foley to run for re-election even after finding out about his questionable e-mails.[108] Reynolds also contributed $5,000 to Foley’s re-election fund, apparently after finding out about his behavior.[109] Indeed, Reynolds only won reelection by four percentage points, despite respresenting a district that had been altered specifically to protect him.”
(snip)
“It has been reported that prior to the public scandal, Reynolds, together with Karl Rove, urged Foley to run for reelection in 2006, despite Foley’s reluctance.[114]”
—
Jon, we need you in Congress!
TeddySanFran @ 62
Yes,I would have voted for it. I believe that no Americans should be targeted because of their race, gender, sexual preference, or any other characteristic.
Is there a logical reason why the US has 14 intelligence agencies? Sorry, I do not know the names of all of them, but CIA, NSA and DIA are three.
I think we all know where you stand on the war, but what about healthcare costs? My employer just quit providing for it, because he says if he keeps paying for it, he will have to leave NY to do business. I need my job and my healthcare. What will you do to help us with that?
Are you in support of gay marriage and partner benefits?
Jon,
In your video you said that one of the care takers at the orphanage took you aside and asked you not to come back because if they were seen working with Americans the kids would be killed.
My question is did your unit leave the orphanage and never go back?
It’s kinda left hanging in you video what your unit did.
The thought of John Wayne getting told to leave to save the kids, I couldn’t help thinking he would say, “That’s not going to happen little lady, the U.S. Millitary is here”.
Bonfiglio @ 27
Davis’ two races against Reynolds seem to have been all about 2 things– his personal and over-powering hatred for Reynolds and his ability to self-finance. Now we have a candidate in the race who thinks about progressive values and ideals and wants to work for them. But he isn’t a self-financer. I hope whoever can afford to help– even $5 or $10 worth– will do that today. Our Blue America page is open.
Suggestion for FDL administration: When Congressional candidates come online, could you put a map of their district and a link to their website? This seems to be Jon’s:
http://www.powersforcongress.com/
Jon,
Barack Obama recently said that the prevention of genocide is not a good enough reason for the United States to stay in Iraq. Do you agree?
Maybe I misread that, but your first night crossing the border you didn’t have the body armor you needed!?!? Simply unbelievable. I read Howie’s blurb on WarKids and will check out the website, but can you talk about WHY you founded that?
eCAHNomics @ 60
If by old UB Campus you mean South Campus and you live in Amherst you are in our district. Bennett High School in the City of Buffalo is not in our district. Many of your alumni at the picnic may be now living in NY-26th, so I appreciate you putting a kind word of support for the new leadership I am bringing to Western New York.
as we know of your progressive leanings – do you feel you have a real chance on winning this seat ? you may have answered this – i’m late to the lake today
Jon, thanks for coming out and playing our game today. My question to you is related to wireless internet. Recent reports show the U.S. trailing a lot of other nations when it comes to availability of wireless high speed internet connections. I love wireless. For instance, I am sitting on my toilet right now while using my laptop. It is a great tool for multi tasking. If elected to Congress, how will you support getting more wifi throughout the country?
Jon Powers @ 77
I found a map of the district, and, no where I grew up is not in it. ButI’m sure some of my classmates do, so I’ll do my best with them. Map link:
http://www.unityparty.us/new-york-26th.htm
Great idea-but how do you propose to do this? What’s the plan? What mechanism do you suggest to restrict the power and influence of insurance and for-profit healthcare companies? Why let them continue to milk the system at all? Why not a single-payer system, like those that work so well everywhere else?
In light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, would you support stronger gun control legislation?
kb @ 70
ryno @ 74
Our soldiers attempted to support the orphanage in other ways but struggled to get them the equipment, food, or support they needed. When I returned to Iraq as a civilian to start War Kids Relief, it was incredibly apparent that this administration never considered Iraq’s youth (40% of Iraq is under 14 years old) in their planning.
As a result the percentage of kids attending school significantly dropped from 75% to less than 30% because of violence. These disengaged, out of school youth are now being recruited by extremist and radical elements. I have heard that 12 – 15 year olds are now building road side bombs in Saadr city for as little as $3 per day. I started War Kids Relief as a way to bring attention to this.
Since Howie is matching $5 donations today, how many firepups can we get on board to
help Jon fight for this seat?
I’m in – who else?
What we need in Western NY is the return of good paying middle class jobs? Davis wasn’t a great candidate but he had it right. Where do you stand on NAFTA, CAFTA, GATT and the WTO? They all need to be repealed and we need to look out for American workers and stop handing our country over to the Chinese.
If you want the support of labor, you need to be with us on this.
In regards to War Kids Relief. I am currently in Lake Placid, NY where my cousin will be competing in the Ford Ironman Triatholon to raised money and awareness for War Kids Relief.
Unfortunatly I have to sign off at 3:30 to take part in an event here in support of the Race for War Kids. Please follow his efforts at the War Kids Relief website, he is both an inspiration and is leading by example.
Thank you so much for coming, and good luck in the race.
Jon,
If elected to Congress will you support a womans right to choose when it comes to abortion?
John, thanks for coming by today. I hope you’ll join us again closer to the election so we can catch up on the issues that are going to determine whether western NY returns Reynolds to Congress or finally elects someone who wants to help solve real problems that face the district and face all Americans.
juslin @ 76
I am going to elected to Congress in NY-26 because I am more in touch with the people of this community than my opponent. They understand Reynolds’ misplaced loyalties and are prepared to support me in bringing new leadership to this district, and our nation.
$100,000!
More on Reynolds-Foley from the Article in Salon:
http://www.salon.com/news/feat…..ex_np.html
“As the chairman of the campaign arm of House Republicans, the National Republican Congressional Committee, Reynolds was aided by financial assistance from Foley, who transferred $100,000 of his own campaign funds to the NRCC in July. Foley was more generous to the NRCC than all but 26 other House Republicans.”
Jon – thank you for coming by today. I hope you’ll keep us updated as the campaign moves ahead!
I appreciate Howie, Blue America, and Firedoglake inviting me to join in this conversation today. I hope you will all follow our efforts in Western New York closely and see that I am offering this nation a new brand of leadership. My experiences, values, and record of leadership by example make me uniquely qualified to bring change to NY-26. I look forward to continuing this dialogue the future. Thank you and please remember both the men and women serving in harms way and the Iraqis who have lived for over four years in a warzone.
If elected to Congress will you support a womans right to choose when it comes to abortion?
What mechanism do you suggest to restrict the power and influence of insurance and for-profit healthcare companies? Why let them continue to milk the system at all? Why not a single-payer system, like those that work so well everywhere else?
Are you in support of gay marriage and partner benefits?
These are three excellent questions.
Jon,
I am from Ithaca. Upstate NY has been taking economic losses since the 1980’s. This seemed to accelerate in the late 1990’s. Few people know of Upstate NY’s technical savvy, it’s infrastructure of institutes of higher learning, an educated workforce and our communications infrastructure.
We have had IBM, Kodak and Lockheed-Martin, to name a few of the corporations, here. Unfortunately most all but Lockheed-Martin, for obvious reasons, have had dramatic layoffs, outsourcing and wholesale corporate restructuring.
Do you favor a policy that supports local workers, small businesses and companies who keep the money in the community over international corporations who’s sole purpose is to make a profit for shareholders elsewhere? If you do, is there a national fair trade policy, as opposed to the free trade policy currently in place, that you may point out to your constituants that you could endorse.
As an aside, I am not one who believes that there is a shortage of tech savvy workers in the US. I believe there is a shortage of entry level tech jobs that can prepare through experience our college graduates for the high skilled engineering and programming jobs that need to be filled.

Upstate NY peaked economically, with the rest of U.S. heavy industry, in the 1960s, when I and most of my high school classmates left.
BTW, what has NY’s vaunted junior senator done for the state? As I now live in NYC, I’d point out that she can’t even get a fair shake on counterterrorism funds.

I’m in.
Good luck, keep in touch, come back soon to let us know how your campaign progresses!

While heavy industry may have peaked in the 1960’s, there still is a comprehensive and extensive communications network that crosses NY State as a vestige of those times. There have been investments in this throughout the 1990’s, if only to serve the government and educational interests, if not private industry.
The fact that an old timer (no disrespect) like you lives in NYC shows that there still is a depth of knowledge in the state. I would bet if there were the opportunity, you would return back upstate.
I would point to the proposed solar research/manufacturing project sponsored by Hinchey for Kingston, NY and the wind generation projects near Chittenango, NY as a starting point for new tech manufacturing and investment. I would also point to the rich agricultural history of upstate and connect that to the emerging organic food market (several great ways to also reduce petrochemical use).
I would have to agree about the counter terrorism funding. I would lay that at the feet of Homeland Security and Chertoff.
In 2004 a local university with sensitive research projects had a security plan to aid first responders (I was a candidate to assist the Dean). Unfortunately money was promised from Homeland Security, but never delivered for the project.
There are huge amounts of legislation that need to be undone at the federal level that threaten our rights as citizens in the US. We seem to be setting up a coup for a dictatorship. I believe that these issues need more attention by our freshman Senator.
To me, it appears that this agency (HS)is part of that infrastructure that prepares for a dictatorial coup; it adds a layer of bureaucracy to several existing security agencies, which we know slows down response times.
Coup? Not too far fetched in view of the Patriot Act and all the Presidential orders of special emergency Presidential powers of late: Create a sure fired SNAFU, then declare an emergency.
Jon, you’re a great candidate. You have my vote!
Thank you, J. Powers, we’ve been waiting for you. How can I help.
I live in Livingston County and this is the rural area where Reynolds received enough votes to remain in Congress in the ‘06 election.
Capt. Powers are you willing to join Congressmen Murtha, Gilcrest, and Murphy in doing what you can to end the war before Bush leaves office?
