Thanks to the efforts Falafel Bill and the toenail clippings of the Mighty Wurlitzer (aka Michelle Malkin), JetBlue has caved like a Pinto in a rear-end collision.
The goal of the Fox News attack is not to get Jet Blue to drop its sponsorship, it’s to teach other companies a lesson. John Aravosis pointed out that Jetblue is not a particularly liberal company; their CEO is a Mitt Romney donor. But that doesn’t really matter, the capital freeze is on. After all, does any company really want to incur the wrath of Fox News when they don’t have to?
Anyone who tries to claim this is a “hate” gathering is saying, essentially, that the entire Democratic Party is a “hate” party. And sure, there are plenty of rabid crazies on the other side that would make such a claim, but no reasonable person will think that.
So what did jetBlue do in response? Did they say “hey, what do you mean we’re catering to the left, we’ve been showing FOX News on our flights forever?” Did they say “would you like our CEO to stop donating to right-wing politicians in order to show that he doesn’t take sides in politics?” Did they say “if we pull our sponsorship of YearlyKos should we then pull our sponsorship of FOX News shows too?
No, jetBlue responded by pulling their logo from the YearlyKos Web site sponsor list, sending the clear to signal to every company in America that you, we, are pariahs that no company should dare touch. That we are, in fact, just as O’Reilly and Malkin have claimed, akin to murderers and assassins.
Oh, but jetBlue would like you to know, sotto voce, that they still REALLY like you, they just have to pretend in public that you’re a diseased pariah while funding the presidential candidacy of a gay-bashing, far-right religious nutjob. As a gay man it reminds me of the way Republicans treat gays or Jews or Muslims or any other minority – bash us in public, but privately tell us they really like us, really they do. You see, some of jetBlue’s best friends are black… I mean bloggers.
A big problem is that JetBlue and others really don’t understand the new dynamic that is playing out in the world of media. O’Reilly is part of the dying, prehistoric breed of old media ( and propagandists) and we are the the new —up and coming—vital marketshare. We’re more likely to put our purchasing dollars in companies that reflect our values and participate in boycotts of those that don’t.
I have two words.

Bush Order Governs CIA Interrogation Techniques
By William Branigin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 20, 2007; 4:06 PM
President Bush today signed an executive order governing the interrogation of terrorism suspects by the CIA and barring torture, degrading treatment and serious acts of violence, the White House announced.
The order “interprets the meaning and application” of Common Article 3 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions for purposes of the CIA’s detention and interrogation program, which is designed to extract information from “captured al-Qaeda terrorists” about attack plans and the whereabouts of senior leaders, White House spokesman Tony Snow said in a statement

Well, given the fuel consumption of airlines – especially on short hauls, maybe it’s time to put some Gore environmentalism into action. Plan on using trains and charter buses next year. Use the power of progressive branding to passively boycott companies that advertise on conservative media and blogging sites. Start to form alliances with renewable energy and R&D companies. Find the progressives who work in marketing, and have them lead the alliance, branding and partnership and sponsorship development. Sell premier memberships to group blogs and online progressive communities. And start to build progressive policy blogsites – this is a big factor in attracting sponsors.

I fully intend to fuck with jet blue for a long time.
For instance, I called their customer service line (800-jetblue) and read them O’Reilly’s “felafel” phone calls. the customer service rep got offended and transferred me to her supervisor. I read it to him: he was also offended. “is this the type of person you want to take orders from?” i aksed. “Cus you do now.” he also agreed that this wasn’t language children should hear, and so i told him that by bowing to O’Reilly they endorsed that kind of language and had lost my business.
Then I explained that as the host of Philadelphia drinking liberally, I maintain a mailing list of about 1000 progressive minded people, many daily kos readers, all of who will be hearing about jet Blue. And then I told him I’d be sharing my emails with DL hosts in cities like NY, Houston, San Diego, Chicago etc, encouraging THEM to spread the word.
I think, working together, we can fuck jet blue but good. FDL, Kos, Americablog, etc have thousands of dedicated readers. H. Clinton and Dodd are also pushing back.

ActBlue flies me where I want to go.
Jane, you rock. Punaise, you rock. Firedogs, you rock.
Hardball……I had to turn it off.
Off topic, but I’m trying to get this to Christy. Have you begun to think about what affirmative steps could be taken at FDL to prevent what happened to Kos regarding Jet Blue? I believe this will be a new tactic of the right and think we should be prepared in advance. This might mean having public disclaimers regarding comments that are so extreme as to be reckless, monitoring comments on ring-wing blogs and keeping a record of the most extreme, etc…
I assume you are talking about the trashing Jet Blue took on the Bill O’bullshit show. At the time, I decided to break with my previous position of not attacking advertisers on reich-wing talk shows because it has free speech implications. In this case, O’reilly called for a boycott of Jet Blue, and so I sent to Applebees an email saying I would never eat in their restuarant again, as long as they advertise on O’reilly. I encouraged other pups to do the same.
You’re aware that Jet Blue caved and pulled their sponsorship? I’m advocated two things:
1. Formulate an appropriate disclaimer that is attached to all articles/topics posted. This prevents what I think the right will begin to do, now that O’Reily had success, which is, they will visit progressive sites and post extreme and reckless comments, which will in turn be broadcast on places like O’Reily to discredit us.
2. Monitor the extreme comments made on rightwing sites, compile lists, and do our own discrediting/sponsorship pressure.
This site is fine the way it is, and so is DailyKos. O’Reilly can suck eggs. We don’t need to change for him.
I agree. And we have really vigilant mods.
Oh, I guess I imagined a post I read last week where someone was advocating violence as a means to accomplish our goals. A few posts later this person was rebuked by another FDLer, however there was no official condemnation, therefore, a third party reading might assume that this type of activity is at least tacitly condoned. Next, what I’m suggesting is playing offense rather than defense. O”Reily, unfortunately, has an audience, and I think any opportunity to make him look less credible rather than more credible, should be taken advantage of.
These are comments from a previous thread.

I flew JetBlue a lot when they first started, as they went places I go. However, I stopped flying JetBlue years ago. Their business model does not work for their routes. Their CEO, Dave Neeleman (a Mormon BTW, which explains a lot), is ex-Southwest, so he copied their model, namely minimize ground time for every plane. Rapid turnaround works OK in the SW, where weather mostly cooperates. But in the NE, where I live, weather delays grew increasingly debilitating until I finally gave up. In the meantime, the regular airlines had lowered fares to be competitive, so financially there was no difference & the service was better.

Court: Judges Need All Detainee Evidence
By MATT APUZZO
The Associated Press
Friday, July 20, 2007; 12:56 PM
WASHINGTON — When Guantanamo Bay detainees challenge their status as “enemy combatants,” judges must review all the evidence, not just what the military chooses, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected the Bush administration’s plan to limit what judges and the detainees’ attorneys can review when considering whether the Combatant Status Review Tribunals acted appropriately.
“Counsel for a detainee has a ‘need to know’ the classified information relating to his client’s case,” the appeals court ruled. “The government may withhold from counsel, but not from the court, certain highly sensitive information

though I think she just coined a new term – “(Hillary) is pushing for premature evacuation”)
The remarks from Amato and Aravosis are particularly keen. Can JetBlue be cowed into pulling a reversal of their reversal?
I really like John Aravosis’ logical parallel he does so often when he juxtaposes today’s gay bashing and suppression of gay rights with slavery and racism. John is correct. They are similar treatments.
Those college repubs and society in general do not understand that gays do not have the same rights as heterosexuals. Neither are gays asking for any special rights or privileges. They only want the same rights that are denied them that other Americans have.
I am not gay, but I understand the problem. For one thing, I believe that a gay person should be able to see a sick partner in the hospital and designate that partner as a health care decision maker if they so deem it.

I think the first thing we should do is stop watching O’Rielly. I know a lot of people watch him to see what he will do next, but we have to tune it out. One person can watch it and put it on youtube if it is something that we shouldn’t miss. Bill is all about his ratings. We now have to show Jet Blue that they made a bad decision, so others don’t follow.
Fuck JetBlue. We went to their web site and called to thank them for their support, and instead they pander to a shithead who attacks a child survivor of abduction and sexual assault, and who sexually harrasses an intern even though he’s a married with children “family values” Repub.
I realize they are run by Mormons, but I had no idea that JetBlue would be supporters of child sexual assault and sexual harassment. This is the choice they made, and make sure everyone you know knows what JetBlue supports.
Oh and Home Depot…doesn’t look like advertising on Pox Noose is very effective. What’s the justification to continue there? Looks like they should try some new strategies.
MMorgan – Bill Keller should be executed for publishing leaked info.

Google’s $4.6 billion plan for an open wireless Internet
Would that all kings were so benevolent. Google announced today it would set aside at least $4.6 billion to purchase a slice of the public airwaves in an upcoming government auction of radio spectrum. The company is imposing one condition on its money: It will only participate, it says, if the Federal Communications Commission requires that all bidders for the radio waves be forced to adhere to principles of Internet “openness.”

Executive Order: Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq
A) threatening the peace or stability of Iraq or the Government of Iraq; or
(B) undermining efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people;…………………..
Sec. 6. The Secretary of the Treasury, in consultation with the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense, is hereby authorized to take such actions, including the promulgation of rules and regulations, and to employ all powers granted to the President by IEEPA as may be necessary to carry out the purposes of this order………
This is really cute..you can be accused of undermining the efforts of the psychopath in chief and they can seize you assets. No courts, no due process, nada.
Eric Edelman said Hillary was undermining The Iraqi Gov’t by the:
“Premature and public discussion of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq reinforces enemy propaganda that the United States will abandon its allies in Iraq, much as we are perceived to have done in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia,”.
Maybe Hillary should have her assets frozen.

I can’t wait to see this.
I have some ambivalence about the YearlyKos sponsorships. DailyKos is a website (correct me if I’m wrong) that has as its purpose the promotion and election of Democrats. That is not the same as an agenda to promote progressive candidates or a progressive agenda. Yes, they overlap in may areas, but they are not the same. Kos bans people when it suits them – and not by any discernible member rules applied in an objective and disinterested fashion. It tolerates a lot of inflammatory language. I can see where sponsors may be gunshy at the exposure to that.
What I would suggest is that YearlyKos and any other progressive blogs and venues for bloggers, clearly state their purposes and rules of participation.
And then pitch to secure sponsors who are in alignment with those, rather than seek out any sponsor who is willing to donate in kind just to build a sponsor base.
It’s the same thing with Markos accepting big oil advertisers. It undermines the progressive message, regardless of whether it fattens his pockets or those of DailyKos. In a way, it’s diluted blood money. Advertisers make demands, and Markos knows that plainly from his rants against the entertainment corporate owners of major news media venues. Well, the same principles apply to him, as well.
I would treat this as a painful lesson learned, would get a progressive marketer on board, and would reposition for aligned sponsors and advertisers for next year.
Jet Blue probably just fired a marketer or two, and it was caught in the O’Reilly Fox lair, just as YearlyKos was. Not right, but neither is YearlyKos purely right, either.
Good afternoon dear friends.
As much of a shame as it is that the right wing has demonized the word LIBERAL, it’s far worse now than anything left is seen as “politicization” and “hateful” but Fox Noise is just there and “normal”.
Time to take our country back. Not just the government, but the whole culture.
Well, don’t you remember when Toes’s husband appeared with a sheriff’s badge?
This goes back to the CHS post a couple back: Get your questions in to YearlyKos.
I urge you to pose Iran questions:
Do you consider tactical nukes “on the table” in responding to acts deemed hostile or in destroying their nuclear enrichment program?
Do you support a first strike on their nuclear enrichment program?
Would you demand a declaration of war either in such an attack or in response to acts by Iran deemed hostile? If not, would you require an AUMF?
Would you abide by the War Powers Act?
Not flying JetBlue is no sacrifice, truly. The same weekend they kept people on the ground at JFK for 11 hours, they kept my family stuck in Tampa overnight. Our flight could get into JFK but the connecting flight was not going to leave, so they canceled us. No hotel, no food vouchers, nyet. Nothing. Just told us to come back the next day to see if they could get us on a flight out. Took us two days to get home. I used to think United was the pits, but JetBlue is the worst and I never fly with them. Their sponsorship behavior is an entirely different matter and shows a supreme ability to screw around with people (oh, I think there is a connection there…). I for one would love to have a list of companies that behave the same way so that I can make sure my family’s dollars don’t go to them. Let’s see now..we have JetBlue and Home Depot..who’s next?
I wrote a “not flying JetBlue anymore” letter to their corporate communication dept. (and was polite and respectful) and got a canned response saying that they haven’t pulled the 10 tickets they donated, just pulled the logo from the YearlyKos website.
I wrote back and called them a bunch of chickenshits.

I am sorry to hear you have such a non-committal stance in support of Yearly Kos. I would far prefer to watch Yearly Kos during my flight than Fox and Bill O’Reily.
Thank you.

Re: email received Monday,07/16/07 Speak Up
Dear Mr. xx,
Thank you for contacting JetBlue with your comment. We have been surprised and disappointed that the
donation of JetBlue travel (10 tickets total) to a bloggers convention has been misinterpreted as
support and/or agreement with a politically centered website we have absolutely no connection with.
As a company we take no stand on any political issues save those directly related to air
transportation issues.
From my personal perspective the issue is quite straightforward. Our marketing team made a decision
to donate 10 airline tickets to an annual convention of bloggers. JetBlue was one of 23 groups to
donate items and thus ’sponsor’ the YearlyKos convention. JetBlue will have no presence at the
conference or any other involvement with the YearlyKos event. We have NO INVOLVEMENT with DailyKos
or anything said or represented on that website.
Our workforce of roughly 11,000 consists of a huge variety of backgrounds and belief systems. I was
personally completely unaware of the existence of DailyKos prior to news connecting the YearlyKos
convention and thus our airline ticket donation to DailyKos. I personally have never condoned and
abhor anything hateful towards anyone and am fully confident that JetBlue’s crewmembers share this
view.
We certainly hope that the sweeping generalizations connecting JetBlue to a political stand will be
recognized as exaggeration and with no basis in fact.

CEO, JetBlue Airways
My new 1971 Pinto broke down 10 miles from the dealership when we picked it up. It was our first new car. The salesman had no eyebrows, perhaps a sign. This car was a lovely yellow and we were constrained to call it the ‘Yellow Peril’. Irony, not racist intent.
Anyway, it finally died in 1982 and we had a bulldozer push it it out of the way of our new house. Lucky us, we got $35 from the junkyard.
Regarding PPP@145, this is what I wrote to JetBlue:
To Dave Barger– I am afraid you are being misled about the intent of the YearlyKos meeting. I read DK and occasionally comment. These are good, fairminded people who want the best for America. Those who vilify the Daily Kos site, and its participants, appear to have an agenda that maybe 70% of US citizens find repugnant. I am very sorry to hear that you have caved in to the likes of Bill O’Reilly. Look at him objectively. Do you want him teaching your kids 7th grade civics? In the long run, his folk have little to offer you. The administration will change in ‘08 and you will have to adapt. It’s the American way. You have an excellent airline, despite a nasty fumble which you handled pretty well, and I would not hesitate to book a flight with you. But you have to realize just who your customers are. Even corporate employees sometimes fail to share the views of their brass, who would never fly JetBlue anyway because they have their own jets and you have no first class. Think about it
Waste of time to sign a petition to Home Depot. As documented in past comments here, they are solidly GOP.
Regarding VJB @146,
Good, I was surprised to get the response I got from JB and it was evident that they had not really read my complaint. They seem to believe the O’Reily crap.
Another Home Depot tidbit: one of the co-founders of Home Depot is the current owner of the Atlanta Falcons. The same owner who chooses to let dog killer Michael Vick play this NFL season because of his greed.
To cover all the bases, the guy retired from Home Depot about 6 years ago, and while he was a contributor to the campaign of Bush I, he supported Kerry last time around.
Goddammit, I really liked flying Jet Blue. And now I’m going to have to write them a letter and tell them they lost a customer.
Hillary’s assets frozen? Uh…never mind, let’s not go there.
Seems to me that in days gone by, the Unions would call for a boycott of certain companies who either broke unions or crossed their picket lines. Now, I’m well aware that a blacklist is illegal (or is it if a group simpley states the truth….I don’t think that’s even trademark disparagement), however, if, along the sides of all the blogs there were suddenly to appear a list of people who pulled stunts like Jet Blue did, or who were publically outed as using slave labor, and it were simply based on news articles, well, I’d certainly check that before I flew or bought anything.
