Sen. Tom Harkin has a few words about why Republicans are obstructing the business of the Senate on behalf of continued failure. And he wants your help in spreading the word — and increasing pressure — on the GOP WINO Caucus. And on every Republican and Independent Trojan Horse Stealth Republican Lite. (Don’t miss Harold Meyerson’s take on the WINOs this morning. Priceless.)
Republicans support failure. And they are willing to continue to obstruct the will of the vast majority of the American public. It is that simple. We need to make the cost of continuing to do so outweigh their need to kiss Presidential behind. One way to do that is to turn up the heat. Whatever it takes, however long it takes…the time for accountability is now.
Call your Senators toll free, and let them know what you think about the Grand Obstruction Party and the Republican commitment to more of the same failure:

Senator Lautenberg filled with heart, soul and the truth. Impressive!
How can Republics be considered failures when they have kept us safe from gay marriage?
Another CHS gem!!!
Good idea to mention FDL in your calls, huh?
Mornin’ all.
Do we have the votes to win an up-or-down? Or at the end of debate, will there be a cloture vote requiring 60?

Yahooo!
EPU’d from Morning Cuppa, with apologies *blush*
still…. back in a sec. w/ my cuppa ;->
Quatro? Harkin was great last night.
Nice zed ya got there, Alfred.
Okay, I’ll call and beat up Sen. Warner again this morning (and cheer on Sen. Webb!)
Let me just repeat that Meyerson’s column was superb. Superb enough for me to add him to my sure-read short list of Paul Krugman, Eugene Robinson, E.J. Dionne, and Frank Rich.
I love it! the GOP the party of failure…they support failed policies that are destroying our military, and they want our democracy to fail as well.
I hope that the public’s reaction is similar to mine: increasing anger and impatience with the obstructionism – and the WAITING that the Repubs keep using as their mantra. Wait for September, WAIT for Petraeus, WAIT for the Iraqi parliament, Wait, wait, wait. I hope one of the Dems speaks to the number of soldiers killed just during this debate! Put some hard metrics on all of this waiting.

thanks. i screwed up yesterday big time, tho. fell for a rethug troll posting that got picked up by CBR and went on a rant on Reid for screwing up again. CHS put the smackdown on me (well deserved) and it turns out the troll post was a trojan, cause Reid and Pelosi had it locked and cocked. I am humbled and MAD AS HELL. We all have got to start fact checking our sources, cause the rethugs are gonna come after us and this is a major vulnerability of the netroots.
On the good side, Reid and Pelosi have cracked the MSM firewall (see dkaine@110 in previous thread for details). Also, WaPoo has dropped the next segment of Angler, even tho they’re not calling it that. It’s the energy task force records that Cheney fought so hard to keep secret. Leaked by a “former administration official”. Complete with Power Point Graphics. dayam. Other than that, the play was fine.
“What happens when 54% of the worlds oil comes under risk “according to the Bush administration.
Under the Clinton Administration…one million Iraqi people die due to sanctions
Under the Bush administration. One million (Lancet, Iraqi body count) Iraqi people are killed, hundreds of thousands injured and millions displaced. That is what happens when oil and Israel are involved with their regime change agenda in the middle east
My party needs to go over the president’s head and take it directly to the American people. Are you listening Demo ‘front-runners’?
Senator Bingaman thank you for voting no on the war resolution.
Imagine ..wait for the U.N weapons inspectors to complete their inspections. Imagine that
good morning all. I admit it, I went to bed. I have to work today.
So here’s the question. If the cloture vote fails this morning, does Harry keep the debate going? I sure hope he does.
Hillary Clinton and Obama can get face-time, any time and anywhere they want it.
Here were the brave Senators who voted no in 2002
Daniel Akaka (D-HI)
Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
Robert Byrd (D-WV)
Lincoln Chafee (R-RI)
Kent Conrad (D-ND)
Jon Corzine (D-NJ)
Mark Dayton (D-MN)
Richard Durbin (D-IL)
Russell Feingold (D-WI)
Robert Graham (D-FL)
Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
James Jeffords (I-VT)
Edward Kennedy (D-MA)
Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
Carl Levin (D-MI)
Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
Patty Murray (D-WA)
Jack Reed (D-RI)
Paul Sarbanes (D-MD)
Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)
Paul Wellstone (D-MN)
Ron Wyden (D-OR)
Wow, I think framing it as “Republicans supporting failure” is a brilliant sound byte for our side! Use it, Dems. Use it often!
sandflea @ 23
Many of the Democrats took us into Iraq..they should step up to the plate and take responsibility. Hello Hillary
Kathleen @ 18
Did Clinton put those sanctions on Iraq ??
I don’t think so..
Clinton was the only President to go after OBL…
Adie @ 8
Hey Adie, you deserve mega-props for confiction…the typo that defines BushCo use of “facts” and language. That one is in the big leagues with truthiness.
Salut!
Wonderful words from Harkin. Let’s buy him a new tie!

years ago, playtex came out with somethin’ called a “maxi-bra” to give extra support, with marginal comfort. those still around? might make a dandy graphic for a comment thread, at the very least…

ya, that’s good stuff right there
I also want to start calling the corporatists and “war profiteers”
that would play in Peoria me thinks;
“republican corporatists supporting the war profiteers and keeping this failure alive as long as they make themselves some profit”
long but I like it1
F*ck the F*cking media.
I just heard NPR’s report, and there was NO MENTION of the filibuster.
Yeah, I got to hear Debbie Stebenow saying “let us vote” but did I hear the F word? No. Did I hear that Republicans and their buddy HoJo were being obstructionist? No.
And this is NPR!
Mr. L says “stop getting your hopes up. There is money to be made from this war, including for those who own the media, and it won’t end while Bush is in office.”
I can’t quite take his advice – the thought of him being right sickens me – but help me shore up the hope here…..
Mojo @ 25
clinton was responsible for enforcing santions that targeted infrastructure like clean drinking water. those sanctions caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children (m. albright confirmed this on national tv). imo, bush’s worse crimes do not mean clinton ought to get a pass for his.
Saddam defied the UN…
How many times has Bush defied Congress and the American people?

Hey! Liddy Dole has a prominent part in the film!
Anyone else see it yet? Am I right or what?! To a Tee!!! *g*
selise @ 32
Agreed.. but he inherited the sanctions.. He Would have had to forgo many of his other accomplishments to fight it and get it lifted.. remember two things .. this was a UN sanction and Clinton had only two years of a Dem congress.. Agreed he could have done more to get the sanctions lifted, but it would have consumed his early Presidency

the un wanted to continue inspections, the president refuse to hold another un vote because he knew they were going to vote no to his make beleive war

I quit listening to NPR about ten seconds after I heard an oil company commercial on it..
Lordy, I really must go to bed. I have to be up again in four hours. But, watching us work has been fascinating. Thanks to you all, esp the backstage facilitators!
Mojo @ 34
he didn’t have to lift the sanctions (if he wanted to keep them), all he needed to do was recognize that chlorine was not a dual use component of chemical weapons… or monitor it’s use in treating drinking water. that kind of simple stuff. it wouldn’t have consumed anything. it was the policy of his presidency – collective punishment on the iraqi people.
Mojo @ 34
he also inherited the removing of the fairness doctrine and did nothing with that either
and I beleive he allowed corporatists to own mroe media venue then previous allowed
there are plenty of failed policy from his years, this is certain
NPR = Nice Polite Republicans

Why is it that I’m the one stuck refuting this point all the time? Again, from a letter to her constituents in late 2005:
Bolded text mine, and apologies for the lengthy quote.
Durbin is nailing it, hoarse voice and all.
Here’s Obama for 1 minute. Guess we’ll have to read what he wanted to say.
Now a short Biden.
my senator up Durbin. He listens to his constiuents. In fact I had emailed him about the mafia shark loan tactics at Dept of Ed. on parent plus loans last Fall, a staffer called back and had a good talk about voodoo math by the sharks.

senator cornyn just brought up his amendment s.amdt.2100, which was voted on and passed by a roll call vote of 94-4 yesterday. bernhard give us a brutal analysis here.
here’s some info from me… from senator cornyn’s press release:
from the amendment:
three dems voted against this stupidity, and they are my heros for the day:
Byrd (D-WV)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
while i’m on the phone this morning, these three are getting a phone call of thanks from me.
Harken is one of my senators. I have been emailing him and my representative Braley urging them to support the end of this war and to support investigations and if/when the case is made, impeachment of Bush, Cheney, Gonzolas , etc. Another person to be investigated and impeached is Antonin Scalia, he is just too cozy with the V.P. Also is Chief justice Roberts vulnerable for any of his work for this administration? Did he participate in any of the election dirty tricks that this administration has done?
jayt @ 6
yes, the end game here is to force 60 votes in favor of cloture. The Dems are holding the Repubs down until they cry “uncle!”
Since the Repubs are holding our soldiers hostage in Iraq, it’s only fair the Dems hold the Repubs hostage in the Senate.
Diane Rheam(sic) has one of the most popular talk shows on NPR. She usually has the typical inside the Beltway pundits and their usual spin (Kookie Cokie, Tony Blankley, etc.) but she is very skeptical of the Bush Administration. It might be time to flood her program with calls and emails encouraging her to put on other voices with different perspectives. We know who they are.

NPR – I quit them in the runup to the Iraq war. They like NYT and the WaPo let us down at a time when we needed them more than ever.
I recently heard Howard Zinn describe listening to NPR when he felt that he could handle the rise in his blood pressure.
Staffer in Sen. Rockefeller’s office, “Senator, that Christy woman’s on the phone again, do you want to take it?”
(sigh) “Okay…Hi Redd, what is it now?”
“Well, hello Jay, get much sleep last night?”

Just called the Republican half of my not so daring Senate duo (Mel Martinez), and made sure I mentioned the word filibuster so that they know that we know what is going on.
The woman answering the phone was very rude. I hope that means we are getting to them.
You might also want to call up some press folks about how they’re pimping the GOP spin on this and pretty much everything else.
First, here’s the opening grafs of AP writer Anne Flaherty’s atrocity. Check this out:
The whole damn article is written that way. It’s all about Those Silly Democrats And Those Nice Polite Republicans — as opposed to highlighting the fact that the Republicans have been repeatedly blocking votes on Iraq withdrawal for months now.
Next up, Carl Hulse, pushing the myth that the GOP “moderates” are willing to break with Bush when (as TPM’s Greg Sargent points out tartly) they’ve never ever voted against Bush on Iraq.
And here’s the AP’s Laurie Kellman, making sure that the GOP spin is in the first few grafs and the truth is buried waaaaaay at the end of her article (which most readers will skip).
Here’s some contact information, courtesy of Media Matters. You know what to do. Be polite but firm; cussing at them just gives them an excuse to blow off our concerns and whine about “those meeeean internet people”.

McCain – still cranky
althespook @ 16
whoa. are you kidding me? where did they get this stuff? and when did they start acting like the WaPo of Ben Bradlee and Katherine Graham? wow.
I can’t hear the audio. Is McCain as grumpy as he was yesterday?
Mojo @ 34
And it WAS Clinton who softened the Bush-era sanctions by allowing the “Oil for Food” (and pharmaceuticals) Program. We also have to realize that Saddam willfully insisted that he would forego many aid-programs simply because they were being administered by the UN. Saddam clearly used the unnecessary suffering of his own people as “leverage” to try and get sanctions COMPLETELY rescinded.
Speaking of Liddy Dole. She’s up for ‘08 and so far no indication she will have meaningful opposition. (and disturbing indications she may not). I’ve been here since just after Lieberman (about 10 Pacific) and she hasn’t spoken since then – did she speak earlier?
grape_crush @ 43 –
senator clinton’s statement doesn’t cut it for me. one reason is that i knew the “intelligence” was bogus and that bush would fuck it up (in 2002 and 2003). her explaination doesn’t jive with the history as i remember it.
and then there’s this.
and then there’s her current positions… and her vote on s.amdt.2073 (lieberman’s iran amendment). i don’t see any evidence that she’s learned from past mistakes… i’d like some assurance that she won’t bomb iran. and i don’t see it.
One all-nighter to fight off a filibuster can be construed as a “stunt”.
*Two* all-nighters, and more people may start to look at these a little more seriously.
*Three* all-nighters, and friends, they may think it’s a movement. The Harry Reid, anti-masacree movement, with four-part harmony and all kinda stuff.
And *then*, Republicans may begin to think seriously about threatening filibusters against Dem-proposed measures. (”Aw, shit, we’re gonna be up all night AGAIN? – Dammit!”)
McCain is just as cranky as ever. Now he’s claiming to be responsive to his constituents. Ha ha ha. He doesn’t even answer his mail. At least Kyl always sends a response, however off-target.
They’re going to be voting soon, no?
Public service announcement: when you call Congressional staff, please be polite to them.
I have direct word that if callers are mean, rude, shouting, or otherwise unkind, they and their cause lose points with the staff. So staple that smile on for as long as the call takes, then you can come back to fdl and grouse among friends.

Grrrrrr! You dang kids get offa my lawn!!!!
McCain is much more entertaining when you can’t hear him.
Whitehouse sitting in the big seat. Schumer up.
Woohoo Schumer!
jayt @ 60
You can pass anything the American people want at filibuster restaurant.
Schumer is pissed. Going after “Cut and Run” and Repub jingoism.
John McCain as his campaign implodes has the potential of suffering the same fate as Matthew Harrison Brady in the film “Inherit the Wind”. After the trial of the century (Scopes Monkey Trial) Brady is a broken defeated man.
noonan @ 71
very, very good! more like this please!
When the repubs call us “cut and run,” our response should be “shock and awe” at the expense of lives and money on Bush’s failed war
Go Chuck !! Short and Sweet speech..
SO are we all ready for round 2 after the cloture vote ??
Enough coffee brewed ??
jayt @ 6
There ARE the votes to win an “Up-or-Down”…but Reid said that there was going to be specified hours scheduled for debate. When that ends there will be a vote on bringing the Bill up for a vote…under the cloture rule THAT requires 60 votes.
So the debate can CONTINUE or Reid can pull the Bill and Table it for later consideration….moving on to other business. Both require only a simple majority.
There better be a round two – if not this really is a stunt.
McCain is a sad case study of Potomac fever.
Its symptoms include a sharp rise in ambition, a marked decrease in character and endless Sunday mornings talking to someone who has a head resembling a potato.

iirc, the “oil for food” program was only instituted when clinton got too much condemnation from our european friends and peace activists here. it was not something he instigated – it was in response to others.
in no way am i defending hussein. i am advocating on behalf of the rights of the iraqi people.
imho, the previously withdrawn Webb Amendment should be the next matter put before the Senate – with an accompanying all-nighter.

Ah yes, the lovely and talented Mr. Arlo Guthrie:
“You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he’s really sick and they won’t take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they’re both faggots and they won’t take either of them. And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. They may think it’s an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. And friends they may thinks it’s a movement.”
Still debating? Fantastic. About time the Dems did something like this. Levin speaking.
Mack @ 41
huh? since when? got yer rabies protection up to date?
the Ds have been making a good (and important) point – that the Rs are acting to protect president bush.
if an “upper-down vote” was permitted levin-reed would pass… and then bush would be forced to veto the defense appropriations bill, if he refused to accept it. a much bigger deal than vetoing the iraq supplemental this spring.
Mitch McConnell -Is all Hollywood. Twaahlight zone. Praise to the junior senator from CT. [Quotes Lieberman.]
euuuww. McConnell is sucking up to HoJoe.
Amen to Anne at 77. I say: Beat them down. Wear them out. Nothing is more important. Even though most of them have no skin in the game, they should conduct themselves as if they were parents whose own children were in harms way.
OT: I watched Hardball last night, and someone cleverly disguised as Tweety conducted an excellent program, with David Shuster, Cindy Sheehan, and John Edwards. Coherent questions were posed, and there was none of the usual bullshit and mumbling. Unbelieveable. What’s happening?
McConnell blowing sloppy kisses to BFF Joe.
EEEWW..
McConnell just “kissed” Lieberman.. threw him some props
Anyone know if they’re really using cots?
beth at 93 — Of course he is. Because he knows that there is one truth for HoJo: he who strokes his ego last gets a fleeting reward. Until the next time HoJo demands an ego stroke, that is, at which time the ugly dance begins again. (And how grotesque is that — to be goverened solely by your ego and whether or not people have satisfied its craven needs?)
selise @ 91
Amen, amen!

McConnell up praising the junior senator from CT “reasonable” Joe Lieberman.

wigwam at 97 — Two words: David Shuster.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 99
Watching HoJoe wend his way to voting last night on CSPAN, getting strokes here and there (including from DiFi!) was a stupifying experience.
Is there a serious challenger to McConnell? I’ve heard he has troubles in Kentucky.
Bluetoe @ 73
You DO know that Brady = William Jennings Bryan? I love that play…
Yep. McCain did it. Nothing will change? If we make the correct choice, things will change. How is it that many of the Republican talking points do one of three things, deliberately distort reality, demean the all-nighter as a ’stunt’, or seek to equate status quo with change.
We can’t afford to imbibe any more of their distorted reality and we can’t afford any more status quo.
Now McCain again repeats the will of the people is fickle and should be ignored because we know better point. Why should Congress do the will of the people, perhaps because that is what they are elected to do, they even call one of it’s portions the House of REPRESENTATIVES.
I wish he would, “shoulder a rifle and fight”, the war he is obviously so interested in.
…and now Mitch McConnell continues to beat the dead horse called ‘it’s a stunt’. Praising Lieberman for exercising his right while calling the very process of exercising that right theatrics. Since our Main Stream Media is so complicit, he even get to accurately repeat how they’ve negatively characterizing the proceedings. I love how they demand all this specific information that they don’t have themselves for their alternative ’strategy’ of doing the same thing.
Mitch gets the fury all wrong: it’s the fury of We the People about the Rebpugs keeping the military in harm’s way unnecessarily and without an achievable mission!
mui at 105 — The horrifying reality is that once that odious man got re-elected, every member of the Senate had to figure out a way to deal with his unwieldy ego in order to get anything done on any issue. Because the votes are that close. And it galls me to say that, let me tell you.
If the Rethugs want to give Gen Petreaus (sp?) more time to complete his “assessment”.. Why didn’t they give the UN inspectors time to finish THEIR job ???
how about a slightly different meme: Republicans are trying to keep the President from embarrassing himself — again. If he vetoes the Defense Budget (ok, the Defense Appropriation), he will be accused of failing to support the troops. That sounds better than “protecting the President” doesn’t it?
Brisingamen @ 107
Oh yeah, a big fan of Clarence Darrow.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 110
I feel every inch of your horror Christy. Every inch.
well, I called Reid’s office to thank him for the all-nighter and to suggest that he execute this strategy several more times.
(and no, I didn’t break into a bar of “Alice’s Restaurant”).
The capitol switchboards are busy today!! I just called my Senators (Bingaman, Domenici) and told them I am loving the filibuster. Keep it going until we get a vote for cloture, two, three days, whatever it takes. Then an up or down on getting out of Iraq.
jayt @ 84
Yes, I can’t stop thinking about it. I think the msm will pay attention to that, I really do. “Why do Republicans hate the troops?” Except FN, of course, who will be catching up with Paris Hilton right about then.
I tried to call Reid. . .mailbox full, no get through.
Bluetoe @ 106

Harry Reid should not say untold millions wounded. He should cite the statistics. Like DiFi made the casualty rate horrifyingly clear last night. 26,000 troops wounded. terrible fatalities, injuries and displacement among Iraqis at X/per month.

Not a fast learner, that one. Do ya suppose it’s dawned on her yet that she’s the only person to have served time for betraying Valerie Wilson?
And/or that her “friends” didn’t do a damn thing to help her?
Larry Flynt has 30 names he’s ready to release, one a Senator that surprised even Flynt.
Cloture invoked on Levin-Reed. Vote will ensue…
Texas is to get more homeland security funds than NY.
selise @ 59
You’re entitled to disagree with Hillary Clinton’s positions on Iran, and to pat yourself on the back for being right five years ago…But you cannot state that she hasn’t taken responsibility for her vote on the Iraq AUMF, which is the point I’ve refuted.

Yes yes yes. From wiki:
Christy Hardin Smith @ 130
I am learning more about how our Government works in this last week, on this wonderful site, than I ever did in school.
Thanks.
TiredFed @ 56
I was stunned when I saw hacktacular Howie’s column and he called it a filibuster. And then he gave a shout out to Christy’s Grand Old Obstructionist thread yesterday!
My prediction: cloture will fail.
My question: what will Reid do then?
Gnome de Plume @ 124
Being a Kansan, I’ve been hoping it is Brownback.
mui @ 129
People in a war zone never fully recover. Friends who were children in WWII in Europe still suffer from those terrible days. No one was made whole again. I call them the walking wounded.
Whatever the population in Iraq, untold millions have and will suffer for the rest of their lives. The wound is deep and doen’t heal. It endures. If you kill my daughter, it will be a pain I and many in my family will live with the rest of our lives. I would become one of the walking wounded.
Yes, untold millions suffer with physical, mental and emotional wounds from this invasion.
On the Flynt revelations, it’s just as likely to be a Democrat as it is a Republican. This sort of thing cuts all ways, ya know, and I’d rather concentrate on policy than that sort of stuff. But maybe that’s just me…
grape_crush @ 132
for me, taking responsibility requires an attempt to make amends. i haven’t seen that with senator clinton.
btw, this is the same reason i call the bushco’s “taking responsibility” bs too. the words are easy… i pay attention to the actions.
and please, cut it with the “pat yourself on the back” stuff. i spent hundreds of hours organizing and attenting anti-war events… and there’s nothing i would have liked more than to be wrong. my point is that if a nobody like me could see what was going down, senator clinton should have too. did you watch the youtube video of her in march 2003?
Woodhall Hollow @ 133
Payoff with tax payer dollars. What a deal!

Well, you know we have the brown menace so close at hand. Oh wait, must of us are brown. I think this is a signal that the white Repug party needs protecting, especially from a voting populace.
QuakerGirl @ 139
I was speaking in terms of speaking style. I believe DiFi’s speech last night was much more powerful than Reid’s.
53 yeahs by my tally.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 140
I agree but Flynt seems to be more concerned with exposing the hypocrisy of the self-righteous Republicans.
QuakerGirl @ 139
While honoring your comment, fact is, ordinary thinking just can’t get a handle on such large numbers–too vague. Real 26,000 style numbers resonate. Which is not to say both points can’t be articulated. Strongly.
Ahhh, I wanted the speecifying to continue. I love hearing these good people (our side – most of them anyway) get up and tell the truth. Something those halls have not heard for awhile.
But at least there will be a vote. The republicans are counting on this not being a topic of conversation anymore, once this vote succeeds on a simple majority vote, then eventually Bush will veteo and MSM can talk about missing women, or .. whatever.
Who will keep the flame burning on this? My calls will now ask (demand??) that Webb’s resolution be treated the same way.
“Mr. Vitter?”
“No –
I didn’t have sex with New orleans prostitutes – *only* D.C. prostitutes!”lieberman – no
Christy Hardin Smith @ 139
No you’re right…policy should be the focus, but sometimes scandals are the only thing that pulls the curtains back far enough to allow people to see the rot underneath.
Things are moving in the direction of progressives. My hope is that any revelations from Flynt help rather than hinder that movement.
beth meacham @ 136
he had better keep this going.
Stevens – NO NO NO NO NO
So if this fails, do they just keep going? Is that when the 30 hours starts? I am still confused apparently.
Lieberman votes no on cloture. Heh. Hypocrite. I wonder if I still have that letter he sent all of us constituents on why he voted for cloture on the Alito filibuster.
54 now with the “other” Nelson now.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 141
Let Flynt do his thing and those who love this stuff will put their attention on the gossip. It should make Vitter happy. In the meantime, let us continue with issues while the holier-than-thous spent their energy on Flynt.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 140
Flynt has stated that he’s going after the moralists and hypocrits. If it’s just some jamoke with a zipper problem who isn’t holier than thou, he’s not supposed to be after them. So HoJo could be a possibility.
Nelson Nebraska – Aye?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 139
Remember, Flynt is aiming for hypocrites… its got Repug written all over it.
Adie @ 33
Saw it Saturday, and I agree. Hogwarts almost died the death of a thousand cuts
Flynt has said that he is focused on hyprocrites who push family values agendas.
You can bet it won’t be Uncle Teddy or Russ Fiengold.
Maybe he has some gay goods on Inhofe.
-GSD
Oops, sorry. I thought cloture had succeeded and a vote on the actual bill was to take place. But I reread Christy’s statement and cloture was invoked … too much staying up all night I think.
And I truly hope Reid will continue. I will call again (Amy in MN and Reid’s office — maybe Coleman????) and tell them I want them to continue if cloture fails.
QuakerGirl @ 157
Oh please let it be an “Independant” from CT.
I didn’t have the list of high priorities calls up when the tally was read, did any of them vote yea?
GSD @ 162
It would be fun if Stevens was one of them.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 140
I agree, but it occurred to me that something like this would be the only way to get rid of HoJo. As Ian wrote the other day, you’ve got to fight if you want to win the battle.
Stephen Colbert Pulls An All-Nighter With the Senate
Bluetoe @ 130
Larry Flynt has 30 names he’s ready to release, one a Senator that surprised even Flynt.
I hope one is Sen Byrd – at which time I will propose that the nation give him a standing ovation.
The people are watching this, and my guestimate is that the national anger at the Republicans’ obstinance is growing exponentially. The military is decimated. Military families are bankrupt, are exhausted, and are deeply suffering. The haves almost have taken it all. And the rest of us have noticed….
Sen. Reid, keep this in play. Don’t stop.
Gnome de Plume @ 167
If this is what it takes to get rid of a corrupt and blood-hungry politician in this country, we are living in very sick times. Seriously, this sort of thing should not be an issue at all.
Gnome at 167 — I’m not saying that exposing an incredibly hypocritical slimeball doesn’t have its uses — because for some people, it does. I’m just saying it’s not my preferred method of political discussion, that’s all. Again, maybe it is just me…
Arlen Sphincter votes no.
Who would have known.
-GSD
It’s worse. Remember Jeff Gannon, the homosexual prostitute given press credentials by the White House? Turns out he was a White House visitor for more than press conferences. Secret service logs, for some unexplained reason, do not have his time either in or out, so to speak.
Check it out at http://www.newyorkslime/gannon.html
If Republicans only recognize blow jobs as grounds for impeachment, this may be it.
jayt @ 168
I hope one is Sen Byrd – at which time I will propose that the nation give him a standing ovation.
That would be pretty impressive!
mui @ 144
You’re right about that. Reid is not a dynamic speaker. He tends to ramble often. He probably did have public speaking consultants to help him improve. If you ever meet Harry Reid you realize it is his nature that is low key even when he gets upset. It’s just who he is. Just another personality in the mix.
Maybe Reid should call off the August vacation until we get an up or down vote. why should they get a break when the troops are dying?
Dee @ 159
Both Nelsons are on board.
Ed Kunin @ 174
God, are you there? It’s me, Tommy.
No cloture? No recess.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 171
Ah, Christy, you’re just one of those reality based people who thinks policies are more important than superficial gossip. How did you ever get through 7th grade?
Mr Reid of Nevada, no? What?
Jayt at 169. I second!!
Yays 52, Nays 47 — motion not agreed to on this. Motion to reconsider since cloture was not agreed to from Reid.
So Reid votes no so he can bring it up again right?
Reids’ nay vote is for procedural matters I assume.

Reid voted “no” that keeps it going?
Naraka @ 185
Right.
When Harry Reid speaks it’s like listening to Winnie the pooh, I just want to fall asleep.
Christy, would that we could win the honorable way. With the Party of Dishonor, though, it will take too long and too many souls will be lost or permanently injured in the meantime.
snowbird42 @ 176
Yep, and it would make the GOP whining all the more precious. Remember how much they whined, when they learned that they were now going to have to work 5 days/week.
We’ll continue to show them the way…Reid

That’s a victory. Shows that without Republican obstructionism, we’d have a bill in place to bring the troops home.
It’s truly on *their* heads now.
leinie @ 30
To be fair, NPR has dropped the “F” word several times this week discussing this evening’s debate. They even spent time on Tuesday explaining the cloture vote & how the filibuster fits into that. Sorry to hear they didn’t feel the need to mention it this morning.
I like Reid’s voice: it sounds more genuine without all the showy bells and whistles.
i am starting to really *like* Reid’s style and delivery … truth is trumping style. now, if only that could be so on the campaign trail.
“How can we not fight this fight? How can we walk away from this fight?”
Sounds like we aren’t going anywhere for a while. Keep ‘em in chambers for a month if that’s what it takes.
Request move to vote. Up and down vote on Iraq amendments.
Casablanca! Yikes!
McConnell objects – with that obnoxious smirk on his face.
The majority should do this over and over and over until they have success.
Claude Rains! “Round up the usual suspects!”
See, this isn’t really controversial in the reality based community Mitch.
what’s Willem Dafoe doing sitting behind McConnell?
OMG: McConnell is *so* off the mark opening with Casablanca.
Biodun @ 189
wow. thanks for answering that.
Our internet service just blonked out for about 1/2 hr., gr-r-r. But now back, thank heaven.
omg mitchie & FDL were on split screen at the time of the ‘event’. Now same. Give me strength, especially with Coleman’s idiotic white-strip grin behind mitchie.
mitchie whining. heh.
Reid sounds like a real grownup in contrast.
Go Blue!
McConnell objects…
I wish Reid would hold strong. I have tears in my eyes as they make political the dying of American soldiers.
What do we do now?
I am so saddened by this.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — The U.S. military on Wednesday announced the arrest of a senior leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, an insurgent who, the military said, is casting himself as a “conduit” between the top leaders of al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq…

Reid: “This is not a movie we’re involved in”
pwned
and Reid calls him on the movie crap! Go Reid!
McConnell objects that all amendment votes get an up-or-down?
I would not have used Casablanca as an analogy between criminal activity (gambling) and 60 (precedual) senate votes. I remember so clearly when the Repugs wanted a simple majority by the senate.
Thank you, Harry. This is not a movie. It is reality. Please continue to bring sanilty to this debate.
Reid: This is not a movie we’re involved in here. This is a serious issue.
McConnell sure looks and sounds like a horse’s hiney. He is infuriating. And that’s a good thing, because Americans are getting a big heapin’ dose of his assholicry. May they collectively regurgitate him and soon.

Yeah, that’s a good idea. Most likely not the exact phrase that my mind will come up with, though.
Reid withdraws motion.
Collins, Smith, Hagel & Snowe voting yes.
Reid (D-NV) “NO” any one know why?
That’s it? Change the subject?
No cloture. No recess.
No progress. No recess.
No homecoming for our soldiers.
No recess.
kym at 246 — Yes, it was a procedural switch of his vote once he saw what the final tally was going to be — it gives him the ability under the rules to maneuver the bill into reconsideration for a later time.
so Reid is not *exactly* caving, is he? he’s laying a bunch of groundwork?
Specter – this was a “colossal waste of time”

Reid is definitely going to bring up the bill again. It’s a strategic move on his part.
Meanwhile, US military service members are dying by the rules.
With al-Qaida being such a threat and in America as we’ve heard over the past week, you’d the republicans would want to bring our soldiers home to protect the homeland. Oh, but no! They continue to obstruct to protect George Bush’s ego, oil stealing, and money laundering over in Iraq.
Pathetic!
Keep humiliating the repukes, Harry! Proud of ya at the moment. :-)
fdl reader @ 241
Very welcome. McConnell’s perpetual smirk tends to get me pissed off.
Also anything Arlen Specter does or says…
Oh Harry! Slappin’ down snarlin’ Arlen! It looks to me like Harry may have gotten the msg and will force debate and senate sessions on EVERYTHING that the Rethugs led by the toothless one are trying to block.
If so, Good On Him!
Joe Klein is on Brian Lehrer (wnyc.org) saying that Reid has made the Dems look stupid & infective. That they should be passing Universal Health care etc that Bush would veto, so they have “something” to talk about in the 08 election. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. As if a) a majority of Dems would have the courage to support Universal Health Care and b) if so, the rethugs wouldn’t turn around and block an up or down vote on that!

watching the senate floor this morning i am reminded of a talk robert kuttner gave last year.
he spoke about how “there has never before been a time in american history when the political process has ducked or bungled every serious problem afflicting the republic, domestic and foreign. the only close approximation would be the decades leading up to the civil war”
Note to Republicans:
Each time you tell us that this was a waste of time, or a stunt? you insult America, the soldiers, the families of soldiers and the dead.
I picked today to have my tooth pulled. Got me a doctor’s note and I’m home.

they’re all really tired.
now you’re gonna see who they really are, under that fancy makeup.
And this, from Buzz Flash:
A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW with Larry Beinhart:
The Bush-Cheney situation right now is like this: They’ve gone to Vegas. Their stake was $200,000. They’re down $300,000. If they get up and they leave the table, everyone knows they went to Vegas, lost their shirt, plus some more. If they stay there and keep betting, one of two things is going to happen. Either a miracle is going to occur, and somehow they’ll suddenly win the war, or there will be a new election and they will be magically whisked away from their seats. Somebody else will be sitting there and become responsible for the losses.
bobbin’ and weavin’ and dancin’ that’s OUR Reidster!
Boston1775 @ 263
Amen!
Hope you don’t mind my copying this to send to Voinovich & someothers.
Woodhall Hollow @ 266
I’m not surprised, because just a couple of weeks ago Sen. Susan Collins said out loud that the American people aren’t talking about Iraq. Republicans would love to shift the conversation to something other than Iraq, because they know they’ve made a grave mistake each time they vote to protect George Bush and his failed illegal occupation of Iraq. Of course they want to talk about health care! The American people will too once our troops are home.
Joe Klein is so entrenched with the Beltway elites and their deep desire to preserve the status quo no one should be surprised at his assinine comments. What surprising is that anyone takes him seriously.
Christy @ 248 Thank you.

I’d be honored, Adie.
Can someone give me the simple version? Is it over or are we going for another night?
Sooo…supporting the Levin-Reed amendment doesn’t count?
No, really…You should be proud that you were right.
Plenty of nobodies like myself trusted our government to do the right thing and act in the American people’s best interest. I was wrong, and it took until 2005 for me to realize that I was wrong.
I guess now your choice is this: Work with people like me (or Clinton, who has a decent shot at being the next US President) to build better understanding of the issues or keep pointing out how bad we are because we were wrong back in 2003, despite how far we’ve come since then.
Your choice.
Nope. Too busy with CSPAN2 right now, sorry.

Listeners calling in saying that rather than forcing votes on Iraq, just impeach! Of course, Klein thinks that is stupid too, since you would get Cheney. Dumb Joe Klein, impeach them both!
Is there a reason Reid could not have continued with the reed-levin amendment?
Make the rethugs actually stand on the floor and filibuster?
Woodhall Hollow @ 266
Klein’s pondsc*m, only slimier.
Call senators and thank them and give them some praise. They need positive feedback.
So, am I getting this right? Reid won’t allow a vote on the entire defense bill until the goopers allow an up or down vote on the Reid-Levin ammendment?
If so, good move!
Woodhall Hollow @ 285
Correct.
KayInMaine @ 272

good morning all
we’re seeing some Olympic level ninja wandness in Congress (finally)to quote a Harry Potter bad guy actor.
I’m very proud of Senators for Change today.
Headline from CNN.com, first story on right hand column at top of page:
“Senate Republicans stop Iraq pullout plan”
and Reid is setting things up to demonstrate that the r’s are obstructing EVERYTHING, not just anything on Iraq? if so, that is excellent too! me likey the comprehensive strategy.
Marie Roget @ 292
can you elaborate on this “follow up fax” deal?
grape_crush @ 278
i’m happy to work with you. i don’t care what you thought in 2003. (i didn’t start paying attention until 2001 – i’m not keeping score here)
clinton is a different story because she is telling the country that her good judgment can be trusted on foreign policy…. and she has proven that to not be the case. i don’t have the option of working with clinton. i have the option of opposing or ignoring her foreign policy – i intend to oppose.

Gee, Marie, I’m a LA girl also living in CA and vote in NV. We get around.
“What happens when 54% of the worlds oil comes under risk “according to the Bush administration.
Duh! For the price of this “invasion” and phoney “Homeland Security” we could have a program that make us energy independent.
However, it does not quite fit in with the financial plans of the oil companies and defense contractors who are so appreciative with hiring ex-pols as lobbiests and their generous campaign contributions.
You will never get honest government without removing the money….
ccmask @ 269
Exactly. To quote Bush at Thursday’s press conference: “We can’t afford to lose.” He said it with passion in his voice and a glint of desperation in his eyes.
Well, Karl Rove’s latest diktat said that Iraq won’t be an issue in 2008. I am sure Joke Line and David Broder took copious notes with quail smelling fingers.

looseheadprop @ 294
I think you should look at the vote as being 52-48 in favor of the amendment. That, however, being fewer than the 60 needed, ended debate.
I don’t know of any D’s who crossed over, unless anyone is still under the impression that Lieberman is a Democrat.

New Galluppoll out today
July 18, 2007
Bush’s Latest Quarterly Approval Average Easily Surpasses Previous Low
Approval rating 31% in latest poll
Bush joins Truman (30.7%) as presidents with very poor approval averages during their 26th quarters in office, after essentially 6 1/2 years in the White House. But not all presidents who served that long suffered low approval ratings. Dwight Eisenhower and Bill Clinton had averages near 60% during their 26th quarters in office, and Ronald Reagan’s was just below 50%.
looseheadprop @ 288
Good catch lhp.
MSM Gets something right. Details at 11!

they left out “Duh-h!” but we’ll let that pass for now… heh
noonan @ 245
Looseheadprop. All but these folks.
While I give Reid and company props for making the effort, they really did not take proper advantage of it.
For instance….most of the GOPers talked about waiting for the Petraeus report in september….yet not once did I see a Democrat rise to ask one of the “are you committing to an up or down vote on Reed – Levin once the general gives his report?”
Its a simple, quick question — the kind that are allowed during speeches — but the Dems didn’t take the opportunity to back all of these republicans into a corner and/or expose their “wait until September” argument for the hypocrisy that it represents.
Fresh thread, up and running for everyone.
fdl reader @ 297
So, does that mean I can get on with my day, knowing that at least one small victory was achieved by our side? (I really need to push back from this addictive website. Anybody got any 12 step advice?)
punaise @ 307
tank oo
althespook @ 297
Sure. I usually prefer just faxing rather than calling their offices, being something of a faxoholic. In this instance I called my Sens. & Reps. for CA, then called Landrieu’s Baton Rouge office. After voicing my opinion on Mary’s speech last night, they specifically requested I fax the office if I could to “have your thoughts to show Sen. Landrieu.” Usually I just either fax or make a phone call.
So this is what Congress will do for us instead of impeachment? Vote after vote going down for lack of cloture. And lets just say – very hypothetically – that they actually, you know, get to vote. Bush whips out the veto pen and poof — nothing accomplished AGAIN!
Congress is wasting our time. NOTHING will get done until Bush and Cheney are removed from office. It is time to impeach them now.
Here goes Byrd.

So, let me get this straight. After all night, Reid pulls the motion? WHY?????
I don’t care what the procedural excuse for this is, but the MSM and the republicans will claim victory. I am wondering if Reid did this to quiet us rabble out here in reality based American. Gave us something to cheer about for a night anyway.
Thank you, United State Senate. A majority of Senators voted to end the genocide planned and executed by the neo-conservatives. John McCain says it will change nothing. But if it makes you happy it cannot be that bad.

Dems fail to make convincing arguments and propell debate forward. Their message was “Let us vote!” Big deal. How about anticipating the September assessment and hammering Repubs on the lack of political progress, and how you can have all the surge you want but until political strategies are coupled with the military planm there will be no end to the war. Dems needed to show how the Levin-Reid admendment pushes the political process forward. I thought Cantwell (D) did well in talking about the privatization of oil in Iraq; but other Dems fell short. In short, Reid is a poor leader.
timmm @ 329
Yep. Very poor indeed.
