Coffee is brewing here. I’m guessing that they have industrial size carafes for the US Senate this morning. How about we start the day by calling Democratic Senators and saying thanks. You can call toll free here:
1 (800) 828 – 0498
1 (800) 459 – 1887
1 (800) 614 – 2803
1 (866) 340 – 9281
1 (866) 338 – 1015
1 (877) 851 – 6437
While you have them on the line, mention you’d like support for habeas restoration.
Coffee is done here. Gonna pour myself a cup…

Mornin Christy
Good morning Christy!
Sen Inhof is an ass…
Must not throw objects at my tv, even when Inhofe is on it.
I am currently repeating that like a mantra.
Morning, Christy.
From EPU land;
Good mornin’ all,
Well, the WaPo woke up on the
rightleft side of bed today:http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..inionsbox1
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..inionsbox1
Clinton did it!
Ohhhh, Clinton did it!!!!
Somebody call Harriet and tell her to take a shower and put on her make-up. She is going downtown today and will want to look nice for the teevee.

MN governor Pawlenty–who fancied himself McCain’s running mate, how’s that workin’ out, fella?–says Guard deployment was too long.
No, ya think?
Mornin’ Christy! Incredible overnights at the Lake. Keep the calls going, gang. I included habeas in my email via the Dean link to my Senators.
Multi-tasking is a good thing.
Oh, and Feed the Kitty Liberally [Paypal and snailmail info’s at the top of the page.]
People-powered democracy in action.
Dover Bitch also asks we consider calling members of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
please help persuade the Senate to end slavery in 21st Century America. dengre’s diary at dkos has all the background.
Ohhh 9/11 too
Its Clinton’s fault….again.
Thanks Imhofe I did wonder how we got into this mess
jackie @ 15
too bad he couldn’t remember the year it happened
Liberals did it too
Who is feeding Inhofe’s dinosaur while he’s stuck at work?
inhofe is so stupid.
Incoming bright shiny object alert:

This is the same guy that was captured in Apr 2002, was captured again in July 2002, was killed at the beginning of 2005, was captured again in May of 2006 and killed in Feb 2007
mc @ 12
WOW!
Sorry to bring this up from the other thread but:
Okay, I’m unclear on a couple things… please be patient with a Senatorial newbie.
1. Why is there going to be a vote on this amendment at 11:00?
Why do we need 60 votes to get this passed, instead of a simple majority?
(Please excuse any spelling errors… I’ve been watching CSPAN all night)
Shorter Inhoff;
It was Clintons fault
Reagan, Reagan, Reagan, Reagan
Some good news: the WaPo tv column reports that Keith Olbermann will be hosting the Dem candidate debate in Chicago August 7.
Might there be some Pups who want to extend their stay at Yearly Kos?
Andrea Mitchell on M-Joe re Elizabeth Edwards, a terrific campaign manager: “She took on al-Coulter, um, Ann Coulter,” now she’s taking on Hillary.
segues into talk of Iraq. Confiction of al-Qaeda and al-Qaeda in Iraq? We are safer in the American homehand. WH talking points with a thin layer of gloss so it doesn’t look so obvious?
I give Joe credit, he mostly cuts thru the spin on this issue and keeps strong points on focus. Andrea evidently called in on Mika’s news time. The smell of desperation in the morning as BushCo minions try to deflect the truth.
Trump said it, sing it loud: This adminitsration is a disaster!
Prince of Darkness coming up–time to switch to the Beeb.
Infonut at 29 — Rule 22 of the Senate Rules allows for a call on a vote where a filibuster is engaged — which the GOP did under the rules. What happens is that a cloture vote can then be called for — which is what Reid did. The rule allows for 30 continuous hours of debate prior to the vote — but the cloture vote must be taken at that 30 hours, or at the start of business the next day if the cloture vote is called and then no debate occurs.
We need 60 votes because it is a cloture vote — a vote to stop the GOP filibuster — under the rules.
mc @ 7
I’m having one of those “took the words right outta my mouth” moments. *g*
I thought the president had already spoken to this issue.
Who is set to be up after Inhofe, anyone know? I was making coffee and getting The Peanut some breakfast when they were doing the last discussion on who was up when, and I missed it.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 33
So if we don’t get it, then debate continues, and if we do get 60, the ammendment goes up for a simple majority vote. Correct?
You should check out the NYT’s Carl Hulse — he takes the WINOs at their word, not bothering to admit that they had no intention of voting against Bush anyway.
And the press is trying oh-so-hard not to admit that THE REPUBLICANS ARE FILIBUSTERING.
If anyone wonders why the Dems don’t do hardball that much, the GOP/Media slanting is a big reason why. (Then again, the GOP/Media is going to attack the Dems anyway: In for a penny, in for a pound!)
has Webb had his say yet? If so how was he?
The Repugs are getting desperate. They are sounding more and more detached from reality/history. They are hanging themselves with their own words…It is very coool…:)
JF at 37 — Yes, and we have 56 votes and counting for it — so we have majority support for it if we can get past cloture.
Inhofe quoting bushy change will come to Iraq from “the bottom up”
I always knew he was talkig out of his *ss
Fresh thread from Scarecrow, up and running.
Good morning Christy! Hope you’re earning some overtime for all of your extra posts and pulling extra shifts! Much appreciated here!
I fell asleep with the laptop on my knees! Missed Hillary, but read the comments – thank goodness for you alert and witty night owls!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 33
Thanks Christy.
But if the cloture vote fails, doesn’t the filibuster just continue?
Forgvie me Christy, but no, I’m not saying “thanks” today. I tuned in the morning shows and saw two Dem Senators speaking on them and not ONCE did the words ‘filibuster’ or ‘obstruct’(in any of its forms) pass through either of their lips.
As a matter of fact, the Dems have, once again, let the media redfine what they were hoping to accomplish, i.e. “get the 60 votes needed to pass Reed-Levin”, which, of course, then made the ’stunt’ a failure. Again, NOT ONCE did either of the Senators on this morning speak to WHY 60 votes would be needed, NOT ONCE did either senator demand ‘an up or down vote’ on the amendment.
Instead we got pap about how “reaonable minds can differ on Iraq, because there are no good solutions” (Obama) or words to the effect of how proud a Senator was to have convinced Reid NOT to have votes or quorum calls overnight so they could sleep (!) (Boxer)
So I’m sorry, you call if you want. IMHO, we were had again. But gee we got to see cots and talk about pajama parties so I guess its all good. Now we can shut up until September. Mission accomplished, Harry.
Who is the woman who is up now? please…
nomolos @ 27
one tough cookie, let me tell you
dratty at 46 — Be grouchy if you like, but with this overnight, they have changed the tenor of the discussion in the media. And that has the potential to change the discussion across the country. So yes, I will be calling to say thanks. Especially knowing that there is still discussion to come.
dratty @ 46
You listened to the wrong show. I listened to NPR, and they featured Democratic Senators saying “GIVE US AN UP OR DOWN VOTE!”
I do note that the media is having a much harder time with the F word than the Democrats — they’re largely refusing to admit that it’s a filibuster!
jackie @ 47
Amy Klobuchar D-Minnesota
It’s Amy Klobuchar, Dem. Sen. from Minnesota
As an addendum to my comment above, I notice that, even on this thread, there are a significant number of commenters who think that the primary purpose of the all-nighter was to get 60 votes, rather than to point out the obstructionism of the minority.
If this is the view of FDLers, imagine what the average, uninformed American is thinking.
Thank-you Christy..:)
oops, Thanks also to twolf :)
dratty @ 46 –
haha. if you’re waiting for perfection before you call with a “thank you”, well… you might as well give away your phone.
my only requirement is that i see an improvement.
so, i’m gonna call with some “thank you”s. but i’m also give some hell about votes on s.amdt.2100 yesterday too.
Phoenix Woman @ 50
I agree that the media hasn’t used the ‘f’ word at all, but I submit that that’s the Dems responsibility to school them each and every time they go on these shows.
And yeah, I didn’t go to NPR…and neither did the vast majority of morning commuters. who Reid and co. are supposed to be educating.
Drank my hi-test…Starbucks double espresso.
I have often wondered what the world would be like if you took folks around the world off of coffee and other caffeine drinks.
There would be a revolution after people woke up from their naps and stopped having headaches.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 49
Christy, you know I love you and, frankly, nothing would make this old grouchy lawyer happier than for you to be proved right and me to be proved wrong.
dratty @ 53
i think the purpose of the all-nighter was to brand the dems as against the iraq occupation without having to actually do anything about ending it.
if i’m right, then, yeah, it’s frustrating. but it’s a step forward. at this point i’ll take whatever i can get.
Amy Klobuchar D-Minnesota.. I liked her. She was clear and focused…
Disconnected around 12:30 a.m. Did any of the Senators who voted for the war resolution in 2002 “step up to the plate” and accept responsibility for their very serious mistake?
Or did they continue to blame the Iraqi people?
That is a great question Senator Graham.
dratty @ 53
dratty, I know some of us are bound to be cranky having been up most of the night; I’m going to cut the Dem Senators slack because they aren’t used to losing sleep debating the war (although they should be by now).
I think the public is seeing it the way they need to: Dems want a finite end to the war, and the Republicans don’t.
There have been Republican and Independent callers on CSPAN this morning who’ve said that; maybe the point that Republicans are actively obstructing an end to the war via filibuster isn’t necessary if they already grok this much.
(And a huge thank you to TRex for keeping the posts going all night here at the Lake — even if some of us couldn’t keep up with the rest of the FirePups.)
selise @ 56
Trust me, I gave up seeking perfection years ago. I am curious though as to what ‘improvement’ this all nighter (which, trust me, is a one-time thing) brought. This isn’t snark or sarcasm, I really don’t get it.
That idiot thinks we are winning?????
dratty @ 63
improvement, to me, is branding the dems as the party that wants to end the occupation (and i actually don’t think most of them do want to end the occupation). branding can have a way of changing how the dem senators see themselves.
Kathleen @ 62
It seems to me that Graham has never recognized that HIS VOTE for the 2002 War esolution was a serious mistake….and surely he isn’t blaming the war purely on foreign al Qaida? He has repeatedly blamed the Iraqi leadership for not “moving fast enough”. But then he thinks things are going splendidly in Iraq despite those car bombs that daily kill and maim hundreds and the increased US casualty rates.
[Note: Casualty rates have almost doubled (100% increase) despite the “Surge” only increasing troop levels by 20%- that means the insurgency is getting far more deadly]
And it seems to me that just about EVERY Democratic Senator have stated that their vote for the 2002 Resolution was a “mistake” ~even Hillary Clinton~ although she has continually couched that with “but I didn’t think that Bush would lie about the intelligence and pull the inspectors out without allowing them to do their job”.
So Senator I dislike Torture…but I support it” Graham should be aware that the disaster in Iraq is NOT blamed on the Iraqi PEOPLE…it’s blamed on a President who deceived Congress and the American People.
And then the Democratic Senators can bring up the stonewalling and manipulation of the Senate Intelligence Committees Reports.
When is the habeas vote? I thought it was supposed to be yesterday? I’ve lost track apparently.
Jeff in Texas at 68 — It should be held before Friday. The debate on Levin-Reed has slowed down the schedule a bit.
dratty @ 57
How much of it is the Dems and how much of it is editing?
Over at Eschaton, one of the commenters, “Smitty W”, sez that newspaper editors don’t like the word “filibuster” and avoid it whenever possible. (He says it’s not for political reasons, but Avedon pointedly pointed out that they had no trouble with the word when it was about Bush trying to get his crappy judges past the Senate.)
According to Tucker Carlson, 1 out 3 women in New Orleans are prostitutes.
http://www.nola.com/news/t-p/e…..amp;coll=1
We shouldn’t let this one go.
Prairie Sunshine @ 32
[my emphasis added]
HEY! Haven’t even had my cuppa yet this a.m. & i run into “MY” brand new word. And I’m already EPU’d to boot!?!
Not usin’ it in vain, I see. Bravo! Carry on troop, & thanks.

Back in a sec. AND upstairs, AND downstairs…
So much to read. So little time.
dither dither….
Anyone know where Webb stands on the habeas amendment? I notice he’s not on the “please call” lists anymore.
Melanie at 73 — I don’t know for certain his stance, but I do know that I’m being told by folks working on the amendment that (1) no vote should be taken for granted, so every Senator needs to be called and nudged on this and (2) the ones on the list are the ones who need a special nudge as identified by the folks working the habeas issue.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 74
Thanks Christy – I nudged a couple of days ago. Just wondered why he was no longer on the list.
It’s great to tune in CSPAN and listen to republican’s quoting Joe Leiberman to support this criminal war.
Thanks Christy!
Rather then thanks for this one night stand, the Dems need another kick in the butt to continue this through the next month…
As long as our troops are sweating, fighting and dying in Iraq, the Dems should NOT go on vacation. They should stay in Washington and keep the pressure up on the Republicans to end this war and get our troops out of harm’s way…
