Senator Vitter offers this explanation as to why he should be allowed to keep his job:
“I’m not going to answer endless questions about it all over again and again and again and again,” Vitter said. “That might sell newspapers, but it wouldn’t serve my family or my constituents well at all because we all have a lot of important work to do for Louisiana … From here, I’ll go directly to the airport and to Washington for votes, because I’m eager to continue my work in the U.S. Senate to help move Louisiana forward.”
Vitter’s wife, Wendy, was by his side as he said that he believes that he “received forgiveness from God.”
Well, I have a news flash for ya, there, ManSlut.
God isn’t your boss.
And neither is your wife.
So, while they may have forgiven you (although at press-time, God was unavailable for comment), you’re not done with this. Not by a long shot. Last time I checked, prostitution is still a crime in the DC Metro Area.
Thank you, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

HAH!
Tillman
Hooray for ruffian!
good job suzannne
woo forking hoo happy dance – i did it right and it published :) thank you trex for leaving this for just in case
Hillary looks sooo tired.
HRC is up.
Nice little gift from TRex!!!
Good job Susanne!
Props for suzanne!! Yay!!
Hill is groggy did she forget to put her teeth in?
Suzanne @ 5
Holy Bat Thread … it’s perfect, Suz !!!
Someone get that woman a cot. Fast.
Hillary: McCain is right; the War has been a complete disaster.
Boston1775 @ 2
Tillman!
Is it true I could have it streaming live on one side of my screen while comments are on the other? How does one do that?
Is it Hillary or did my internet connection just sloooow down?
Man Hillary looks like Hell.
lolo @ 11
You rascal! She forgot her lipstick for sure. ;~)
TRex wrote it – I just pushed the publish button (for the first time here at the Lake).
(smiling and lighting up a cigarette)
EPU’d…
Oh, Hill. You. Look. Tired.
Suzanne @ 20
You rock.
Liberal Heart @ 6
Lisa Murkowski stole her hair dryer.
Why is she talking at all?
In the end… this is useless. Does she really think she’s going to change anyone’s mind?
She should sit down and let the Repubs take the heat; rack up the negative sound bites.
spidey, i dont know – dialup here so i’m watching it on tv and not online
She may be dead on her feet, but she’s not reading.
Liberal Heart @ 26
good point, LHeart. If she is reading, it is not obviously so like so many others tonight.
Liberal Heart @ 26
The difference between a professional and a party hack.
spiderpaws @ 16
Two ways. you could select the “freestanding player” option at C-Span, then, just leave it floating atop your browser page tuned to FDL (on the right side, over the ads)
OR, you can resize each window (from putting your mouse on the lower right corner) to be more skinny, vertically, so both windows fit on your screen.
spiderpaws @ 16
Spidey, I can listen to it, but, I can’t watch it! Go to C-span dot org click on the stand alone player, either Windows media or Realplayer!
You just wonder if this is a defining moment for her. Sort of like Nixon in the famous JFK debate.
timmm @ 14
Boy, she has been reading FDL … her persona has warmed up and become more intelligent, a la Gore …
Suzanne @ 27
Gotta give her credit – this is off the cuff. Good for her.
al-Qaida live in cars and trucks?
She’s probably only talking now to keep herself awake to watch the rest of the republicans implode. I don’t think any presidential candidate would want to miss this show for anything.
Liberal Heart @ 26
I’m not a Hillary Clinton supporter, but what she’s saying may be one of the more important talks of this stunt. Or not, but she IS the most careful candidate for president in recent American history, so, again we’re getting history.
Spiderpaws open up 2 windows. Minimize them and open one with cspan and one with the comments. you can drag the windows wherever you want them. HOpe this helps. That is what I do.
timmm @ 34
Oh, I’m glad someone else heard that – exhaustion does funny things, but that was a howler.
jacqrat @ 29
(to get two windows up, select “New Window” from the FILE menu bar while you have FDL open; then point that new window to c-span)
Belay my last comment, pups. Scoop Jackson would be proud of this Senator.
wtf is a political surge? lawyers toting machine guns in the streets?
newtonusr @ 33
She has notes, but her manner of delivery is … Presidential …
Suzanne @ 20
It was that good Suz?
Suzanne @ 27
She is a pro – I’ll certainly give her that but all things considered I’d prefer she remain in the Senate.
Her most important point, IMO:
“We accomplished what the original war appropriation was meant to do.”
Ed*ard Teller @ 40
does that mean “never mind”?
I was a little scared by the Iran talk.
Odd, though. Overall I am finding the prospect of her as the nominee not nearly as unpalatable as I would have thought.
Ed*ard Teller @ 36
This is the most I’ve liked her in a loooong time.
Felix Moronia @ 45
Well, it was my first time so I don’t have a lot to compare it against…
I’m liking her lines about how the war was put on “the American credit card” and financed by foreign debt.
Dems are really lousy debaters. They should be hammering Repubs on their simplifications (e.g. Sessions whacky impersonation of Reed) and lack of political vision. I thought Cantwell (D) did well in terms of addressing an important political issue, but others have fallen short.
Suzanne @ 49
That’s what I told my boyfriend back in 1965.
Let it rip Hillary. Thank God she is finally snapping out of it.
Suzanne @ 46
She’s trying to have it both ways. She’s leaving the door for continued low impact occupation and continued liquidation of Iraqi assets to international corporations open enough so she can beat Obama in fundraising over the current quarter.
Hillary’s fucking awesome
Next time it will be a letdown.
Liberal Heart @ 48
It’s no accident … her handlers have been listening to the blogosphere … her wardrobe, make- up, manner of speaking, etc.
have all gone up a few notches … give it your best Hillary and let the chips fall where they may …
bi-partisan majority … yessss
I hear good stuff about her as a senator – just not sure about president. but then again, i think it is way to forking early to be choosing the who for an election more than a year away.
timmm @ 51
Well rigt now I think Hillary is practicing her poise and trying to show herself as a strong and capable leader, not a polarizing presence like she is usually characterized as. She’s trying to be a more sympathetic speaker. I may take her seriously shortly if this continues in this venue.
Ed*ard Teller @ 54
Did you hear about Oprah’s private fundraiser for Obama at her house. He is going to score big.
Petrocelli @ 57
Nothing would make me happier than for Hil to turn the corner. Will make Gore’s victory sweeter…
Hillary: I am watching her carefully. Does she have what it takes? Why did Joe Wilson endorse her? I know that I must pay attention.
The catalogue of miscalculations and mistakes shocks the conscience.
Our troops and their families are paying the price for this administration’s policies.
Economy: Tax cuts for the rich and the war in Iraq. They have been put on America’s credit card.
Get troops out of harm’s way.
Begin diplomacy. We have neglected it to our peril.
We must not deploy out of Iraq with the same lack of planning for the way we got into Iraq.
What is the planning that will protect our troops when we do withdraw. Not the same old answer, but what is the careful planning?
“We have ONE Commander-in-Chief at a time.”
translation from senatorian – “Kiss my sweet tush, Sen. McCain.”
Can’t wait for the galleries response to this eloquent, urgent and remarkable address.
The only thing she’s said that worries me are the Iran comments – “Everyone knows that the current government of Iraq is a client state of Iran.” This is pretty much true (and something the Bushies try to hide), but given all the “attack Iran” rumors, it scares me a little.
Her points about managing the withdrawal the right way are very good and not made often enough. A poorly planned withdrawal could be incredibly bloody.
Suzanne @ 59
I find her makeover success remarkable … Giuliani tried to make over his “persona” and dropped …
McCain failed to make over his persona and dropped even more than Giuliani …
sorry, yoga/meditation makes even their most subtle changes glaringly apparent …
And now, whiny boy…
Norm looks wiped out, too.
newtonusr @ 61
Hear hear!
Hey, I thought Coleman supported the Levin amendment. Whu’ happened?
well thanks for the advice everyone, when I tried to put another window up I got the last site I was at…maybe I need to get C-Span up then FDL then open new window….will try that before giving up entirely and turning on TV…
newtonusr @ 61
Would Gore take Hill as his Veep candidate or pass her over for a less popular nominee ?
I thought Coleman was one of the waverers, so why is he against Reed-Levin???
spidey, i’ve got the cspan on the tv and the lake on the pooter and that works well for me
Would Gore take Hill as his Veep candidate or pass her over for a less popular nominee ?
Well, we can be pretty sure he wouldn’t choose Joe Lieberman.
Petrocelli @ 73
A lot of inside-baseball, but interesting ticket…
CTuttle @ 74
He lost the game of naked twister to Senators Graham and Sessions, so he had to change sides or….
You go to the White House with the best President you have, not the President you wish you had….Hilary will end up the most palatable choice…
that guy up there now has more makeup than Hillary
lolo @ 61
Obama has charm, but lacks substance … and I agree with Suz, it is too early to choose
but I like Edwards most of all and I sincerely Gore runs … everybody who is anybody will support Gore, even Oprah !
Ed*ard Teller @ 78
Rove called – said something about pictures….
newtonusr @ 77
I’ve heard scuttlebutt of a Hill/Obama ticket, food for thought!!!
spiderpaws @ 80
Coleman faces Al Franken in ‘08, right ?
“Precipitous Withdrawal” was a term lifted from a Nixon speach in regards to Vietnam
Petrocelli @ 73
Fine question! It would be tough for her to accept that, me thinks, but it would certainly be a win win for We the People. Not to mention insuring eight years tenure. It would take at least that many years to clean up the mess Bush/Cheney have created here, there and everywhere globally.
CTuttle @ 83
The two of them together is a pipe dream … I would say Gore/Edwards or Gore/Dean … as my pipe dream …
aurorasprite @ 60
Repubs have only been able to address the unforeseen consequences of “precipitous withdrawal”. Dems really needed to be highlighting the political work that has to be done to end this war successfully and how Bush has so far failed to do anything positive toward reaching political benchmarks.
Suzanne @ 82
Dang, you two!!! LOL!!!
newspaperbrat @ 86
Not eight years. Sixteen.
Petrocelli @ 81
You’re making my heart sing Petrocelli!
newspaperbrat @ 86
I think rather than be Veep, Hill would choose to remain in the Senate and perhaps become Senate Majority Leader.
Petrocelli @ 81
GORE/EDWARD ‘08
PELOSI ‘07
Petrocelli @ 87
I’m dreaming of that pipe, right now, packed nicely…
Hill seemed more real once she quit w/the hand gestures and consulted notes. Hand gestures seemed studied – her usual MO, or bad coaching?
TV in another room so I’ve been juggling. Now Coleman’s up (”the battle being brought from there to here”), I can sit tight.
How about Gore/Boxer?
lolo @ 93
I’m all for Pelosi ‘07!!!
my dream ticket Gore-Webb 2008. I hate it that none of the top tier of nationally-known Dems are young progressives from west of the Rockies.
He WILL oppose it. Should have gone with Webb, dummies. This is NOT going to work. Why I’m staying up.
Liberal Heart @ 96
ummmm I think that Boxer sided with hojo against Ned Lamont. I don’t trust her. She is all over A*P*C too.
Why now? Coleman asks.
We had a bipartisan agreement.
Why now?
Why now, whiny? Because we’ve had enough.
Liberal Heart @ 96
There we go. That’s my ticket!
Thanks for the correction – sixteen fine years! Stop my pounding heart.
Geez Coleman give it up. it’s not special interests, it’s not just one poll. It’s ALL of them. 70% of Americans, that’s a majority, want out of Iraq. Where do you stand, Senator? With the President, or with the People?
gore/clark
clark/edwards
newspaperbrat @ 91
You should see when he comes to Toronto or goes to Europe … he gets a Rock Star’s reception … tickets are scalped 10X the value … standing ovations everywhere … Gore is the one who can reverse the moral deficit accumulated by BushCo.
He has the knowledge and can inspire people from all walks of life to accomplish. Be sure that if he runs, he will already have plans to undo all the wrongs and he will get results.
Casey beat Santorum in this last cycle, right?
Ed*ard Teller @ 98
Come on ET don’t give up now. THINK POSITIVE
lolo @ 93
Pelosi ‘07 … now that’s a dream I’d love to see realized !
CTuttle @ 106
I believe so, CT.
Liberal Heart @ 96
Sad to say Boxer’s judgment with Liarman over Lamont disqualifies her from consideration IMHO.
Didn’t HRC say that Obama would be speaking in this next bunch?
lolo @ 107
I’m not giving up. I feel we’re closer to taking this country back than we have been in a long, long time. I said “Why I’m staying up,” not “Why am I staying up…?”
Casey is hitting it – serially debunking talking points with facts and good sound bites.
Suzanne @ 109
Thank you PA, for dumping Santorum for this fine individual!!!
ruffian @ 104
I like Clark a lot, I don’t think he has the numbers – popularity or $$$ – what have you heard ?
Any idea when this debate is going to end? I’m running out of coffee…~_~
CTuttle @ 106
Yes, I was so sick of MadDog and his fake Christianity .
Give yourselves a hand pups. Since noon pdt:

time for sleep. nite
Suzanne @ 111
yeah. He may be next, right after his cigarette break…. keeps him away from the GOP Senators and their baby oil. Those naked twister sheets are getting grody.
5 a.m. … need to get a few hours of sleep …
G’nite all !!!
Thanks
BatwomanSuz and Mods for making this so great !!!aurorasprite, its supposed to go all nite – isn’t there a vote at 11am EDT? (tired and not remembering all the details)
newspaperbrat @ 110
I didn’t even remember that. All I remembered is what a fighter she is.
Nothing heard about Clark-just wish he would
I think a Quorum call would fit the bill right about now! Send the Sergeant at Arms to rouse ‘em!!!
It after 5am. Isn’t there supposed to be another vote about now?
g’nite newt and petro
Hey, Casey’s great, isn’t he?
Nighty night Petrocelli and Newtonusr
Suzanne @ 121
If that’s true we have 6 more hours…guess I should make more coffees then…
Nite, Sleepers!!!
so this is the newbie guy from WY – i musta missed when that appointment was done.
Vote at 5 am-ish.
CTuttle @ 124
Better yet, give the pages Wednesday off from work. Let the GOP senators know that. Then give your quorum call 30 minutes later. Only way Reed-Levin will pass.
I wish that Senator Johnson would make the trek to DC to vote an up or down vote. Wouldn’t that be wonderful.
Ed*ard Teller @ 133
Brilliant – is this doable if the will is there?
Don’t quit, don’t pull out; support the troops — that’s what he heard in Wyoming? He must have been at Cheney’s house.
npb,
I wish. But Barasso is a case in point on my objection to bringing Reed-Levin rather than Webb to this fray. Rodeos, war widows, failed state becoming sanctuary. He’s doing even better than Hillary at turning this into positive campaign fodder. Webb wouldn’t have given him that opportunity. And it would pass.
Something’s up….
See, the Quorum call! C’mon you sleepy-butts get going!!!
The only thing I can say about this guy is that at least the gov did not appoint lynne cheney and appointed this guy.
roll call – 0505 EST
I need a cot.
G’nite, pups.
g’nite LHeart.
Liberal Heart @ 141
Nite!!!
Most of them are coming into the chamber to be counted, then walking right back out.
There was actually a line.
The early bird Firepups should be along shortly!
Sweet dreams Liberal Heart.
Well, enough for Barrasso’s maiden speech. Not even an inspired rendering of same ole.
Hey, what happened to all of the lapel flags? Did they go the same way of all the yellow ribbons in my red locale?
Luger and Voinovich are such rotten jerks.
lolo @ 148
Add Collins to that list!!!
i keep thinking i should be hearing the theme music to jeopardy while we wait for this vote
Suzanne @ 150
707!!!
So, I’m unclear…
What happens if they don’t have a quorum?
Did you ever hear the words to jeopardy theme-as done by Christine Lavin
CTuttle @ 145
Mornin all. Got a good cup of tea, got some bread dough started and I am ready and rarin to go. Tried calling both my Sens, gregg and sununu, nobody in their offices answering phones. Lazy bast**ds.
One has to wonder if MSM will report that there was an all night session or will they find some celebrity to write about instead?
If there is not a quorum, the Sgt at arms will be told to bring the senators into the chamber.
Haven’t heard that version of it – by the actress?
lets see if I can do this from memory:
back in high school
I was a square
carried books and slide rule everywhere.
now I’m on a TV show where big brains can win me big dough
InfoNut @ 152
They would have to recess until a quorum is present, not gonna happen today!
g’morning, nolomos – still the middle of the night here on the west coast.
So… why aren’t all the Repubs just going home and forcing a recess, then?
I know I’m missing something.
Has anyone kept a tally?
What are they voting on? All I can see on screen is “request for absent senators” and “Majority Leader Reid called for this — illegible
Dems voting yes Rs voting no….
There is a post over at TPM Election Central that explains why the rethugs can’t not be there. I’ll look for the link.
Found it – here is the TPM Election Central post.
You guys have been trashing the women candidates all night…you got problems with a woman prez or what? it is exactly what you need…a little less testosterone, I for one feel men have fucked it up for years and now we want a turn at it.
Boston1775 @ 160
Yeah – 1,623 comments at late night fdl, and counting.
From the TPM post:
InfoNut @ 159
Because Reid would have them dragged kicking and screaming into the chamber. They cannot force a recess. A quorum is 51, there are 50 Dems so all they have to do is keep the quorum call open until a gooper can be found. THey can, and have been, carried into the chamber to comply with the quorum call.
InfoNut @ 159
spiderpaws @ 164
That’s no fair, spidey. I said exactly what you did. Two hours ago.
spidey, i’m not picking up on women bashing – did i miss something?
Just read over all your posts about women candidates…Thatcher, Gandhi, Clinton, Boxer…you have anything good to say? Makes me sick…we could hardly do worse than the idiots we have…men runnin’ everything and makin’ a mess of it.
Oh, Good Lordy!
What’s happening to Conyer’s/Sachez demanding Hariet Meirs to report?
Aye?
So sorry, (My British Side)
Pear
Ed*ard Teller @ 165
Wow you have a lot of fingers and toes
Suzanne @ 170
I must have missed it too!
spidey, what i read about boxer was her supporting lieberman, i saw some good things said about hillary’s speech, and the thatcher/gandi argument was quickly shot down by two names of women that have done good.
did i miss something else?
Okay, I got it now. Reid first called for a quorum check, then introduced a motion to get the sargent at arms to force the other senators to show up.
That’s what they’re voting on now.
uh oh, sergeant at arms alerted to drag in them there sleepin’ senators…here come the fireworks…glad I stayed up! :D
kerry up now
Dang, I don’t see a hair out of place on Kerry! What does he use Super-Glue???
Suzanne @ 109
Your goddamn right he did, I would know I voted for Casey. God was that a proud day for me to kick the mouth of PA that degenerate slimeball Rick Santorum.
Bob Casey is as about slient then a church mouse and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Wasn’t it ET who called for more “testosterone” awhile back?
Let’s face it: War is Not the Answer.
Thank god Kerry said that al Qaeda was not in Iraq UNTIL we attacked Iraq.
He can’t say this enough.
CTuttle @ 179
I don’t think he has individual hairs. I think it’s one lump… molded out of polystyrine.
spidey, et said Nobody needs “softer gentler more feminine,” we merely need a whole fucking lot less testosterone in a very dangerous place.
spiderpaws @ 171
There are some horrendous women leaders throughout history and there are some godawful men. Power is the great corrupter and it would seem that corruption crosses gender lines with no problem. What we do need is a different viewpoint at the top and if that is a woman, wonderful. However none of the women either running or looking as though could/might run at the moment appear to me to be what I would want in a Prez.
The problem would seem to be that we have a system set up that corrupts the candidates before they get too far in the process and those men and women that would be my choice never get too far as they do not want to participate in a corrupt system.
InfoNut @ 176
Thanks, I was lost. Now, what was the final vote?
Seems Kerry debunking that we’re now fighting A Q in Iraq – go for it.
Kerry is doing the talking points for everyone who wants to appear on any talking head show at any time.
spiderpaws @ 181
I said:
Ed*ard Teller @ 221
I also said I hate this goddam fucking war! again and again. just like you, spiderpaws…
Heath Hatcher @ 180
I certainly want to thank you for that! Could you imagine Santorum at bat! Horrors!
I think the “big names” are timing their statements so they get the CNN and other early morning shows air time.
CTuttle @ 179
$500. Haircut!
SunnyNobility @ 186
I think the “Ayes” had it. The Seargent at Arms is going to be a busy bee for a little while.
lolo @ 191
He stole the hair dryer Lisa Murkowski stole from Hillary Clinton. {{{ET ducks dfrom the frying pan thrown from the direction of spiderpaws…}}}
I think enough votes showed up to show that a quorum was present because the filibuster is continuing.
spiderpaws @ 171
Oh that was me, Spidey. But I never said anything about any candidates. Petrocelli suggested we should have all-women politicians and I pointed out that, as Thatcher shows, being a woman doesn’t necessarily make for a great politician. Which doesn’t mean I don’t support women in politics, I’m all for it (maybe because I’m a woman too). I know a number of women in politics who are truly wonderful but I also know a number of equally-admirable men. My point, obviously clumsily made, is I vote for the person I think will best represent me and my beliefs. Gender isn’t an issue in my decision. Of course, if I had to decide between an exceptional man and an exceptional woman, gender might be an issue. However, I’ve never been in that position. I’d like to live in a world where I faced that dilemma often.
Ed*ard Teller @ 193
LOL!!!
spiderpaws @ 181
Agreed, Spidey.
1. I don’t think it has to do with testosterone though.
2. I will support Hillary if she is the candidate.
I will support Nancy P. is she is the candidate.
3. I have already supported Victoria Wulsin and the Missouri senator
and other female candidates and will continue to do so.
Testosterone and chromasomes should not be used as a justification for stupidity and being wrongheaded. Everybody has a choice. Judge people on their actions, not their body chemistry.
Shorter Kerry:
You say “why not wait for the report in September”? I say why wait for September to fix something we KNOW is fscked up now?
I sure hope CSPAN had great viewership numbers tonight. A significant and noticable number.
OK, compadres, i’m shortly taking the train to Frankfurt and tomorrow morning a flight (US Airways [groan…..]) to Philly and then Portland, so i won’t be clogging up the tubes so much for the next ten days. Y’all keep kickin’ butt and takin’ names ……
Kerry: Our presence in Iraq empowers Iran.
InfoNut @ 198
Now that would be something!
Senator Kerry is on a rock and roll rant – good for him.
InfoNut @ 198
This is a real discussion on Iraq!
fahrender @ 200
Bon Voyage!!!
I’m liking Kerry a lot today.
CTuttle @ 204
I was all set to be unimpressed by Kerry.
I was wrong.
fahrender @ 200
Happy trails fahrender! You’ll be missed during those ten days.
Wish Kerry had won.
Warrior/Diplomat
He is doing the job right now. Dismantling the idiotic ideas for more war, more war, more war.
(He’s funny with the precipitous thing.)
flag at the bottom said obama will be coming up and that there will be a short recess to start the legislative day.
1,579 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Spiderpaws and the late night Patriots:
Take a breath and go yell at the mirror er sumpthin’ but take that pseudo feminist posterin someplace else. There is not another place where women and womens’ voices are heard and respected more than on FDL. And as for ET, if yer gunna take the Tellerman down ta the mat fer bein’ anti-woman, well ya jest better bring yer lunch, dear, there ain’t a more egalitarian folks around than ol’ Ed*ard Teller.
And if Mrs. Clinton is nominated by the Democratic Party, I will work to see to it that she ain’t elected…how’s that grab ya??!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND GET THAT SHIT OUTTA MY YARD!!
CNN’s covering it on the morning show, front and center!!!
Norske, nice to see ya. Please do not personally attack when disagreeing with another commenter.
Inhofe believes we’ve got the terroeists and Al-Quida skeered.
Is it just me or did Mr Kerry just say we should vote on asking the Iraq people in an open vote decide if we should leave Iraq??? if he did that is brilliant…:)
“Wish Kerry had won”.
Uh, Kerry did win the largest popular vote in history IIRC. Past time to unload the Electoral College insanity and when we take back the White House in 2009 I hope & trust President Gore makes it so.
Oh finally, please talk about Afghanistan. Kerry is going for it. He’s doing his job.
Kerry bringing up how we outsourced the job of getting OBL and mentioned Tora Bora.
John Kerry: “They have no idea why the IED is being exploded”.
I think he’s talking about Iraqi.
Well, lets hear him out, OK?
Nope. Doesnn’t work for me.
Oh, Well.
Y’all are still at it? Senators vote yet?
tex, just the quorum thingie a few ago then kerry started speaking.
TexB @ 220
Not for a few more hours! Couldn’t sleep Ma’am???
Well I will try to get more sleep and catch up with all this in a few hours. Quite a night, eh?
TexB @ 223
One for the record books!!!
CTuttle @ 224
Not yet bedtime out where you are?
Since we’re on the Sex-Gender subject:
“Sex” = chromosomes & plumbing
“Gender” = energy quality
(as in, what spirit is engendered or generated;
given life as in genesis)
This is a worthy topic, imho, since things like:
informed consent, reasonable profit margins,
renewable energy (goes to systems & exchange),
emergent properties (citizenship & governance)
go directly to the dynamics of gender.
imho, though Gore and Edwards are the
sex of the old garde, they engender the
underrepresented energies of the marketplace.
OTOH, HRC and Obama, though envisaged of
the underrepresented, are still largely
conduits of overrepresented energies of the marketplace
(WalMart, Mrs. Obama, really?)
In this regard, I’m on the fence with Hill –
points for speaking at 4:30am, but subtract out
scary parts on Iran.
Here endeth this morning’s Gender 101
/more later – think on it for strategy!!
TexB @ 225
It’s 12:21 here, definitely past my norm, but, too much to miss!!!
NYT front page above the fold:
Bush Aides See Failure in Fight With Al Qaeda in Pakistan
By MARK MAZZETTI and DAVID E. SANGER
President Bush’s top counterterrorism advisers acknowledged that the strategy for fighting Osama bin Laden’s leadership of Al Qaeda in Pakistan had failed
Utah guy is wearing a yellow tie – and starts lying right off
Hatch is up, and unhappy with Kerry.
Wow, y’all are still up! I’m so ashamed I fell asleep. Did I hear a frying pan fly down the hall? Suzanne and pups ,you rock!
Did Hatch open up with: Absquontialization is not a legitimate policy???
TribeScribe @ 226
Nice, Tribe!!!
Are the other blogs hit with this traffic or just us because we got a regular late night comunity?
Why is he talking about unilateral withdrawal and abandonment?
“Lie, lie, lie, lie lie lie lie.” – Orrin Hatch R-Utah
thingscomeundone, i don’t know. i’ve been too busy here to check elsewhere but i recall hearing some other blogs were going to be live blogging it.
Boston1775 @ 232
absquatulation
OMFG
“Are we going to abandon the field we have learned to dominate?” O. Hatch
Did I miss our triumphant domination on CNN?
I can’t remeber this many people paying attention to a late night filibuster this is almost like the Clinton Impeachment trial again! The GOP sure don’t like getting the natives restless.
But are there any wise old GOPers still left in the Senate who have the courage to tell Bush that he MIGHT have just gone to far?
Whoa! Hitting a wall! Time for me to bid another fond adieu to the Lake! Aloha Oe!!!
Mr. Hatch just said that it took us too long to understand the tribes. Ya think?
OMG – Neighborhood Watch
You know, I still hear Kerry’s words: We would never have asked our soldiers to do what they are forced to do today.
And then there’s that precipitous thing.
Repubs have interrupted speeches all night with questions. Why is no one asking hatch “Where the hell did you get the idea that the ammendment up for debate calls for unilateral withdrawal and abandonment? Please point to the language in the ammendment that calls for this.”?
By not speaking up, they leave his lies unchallenged.
I am hoping the viewership numbers at CSPAN and blogs like FDL are enough to put some fear into the republicans that folks are pissed enough to stay up and watch it.
I am now really worried that Kerry and Hillary are the New National Democratic Party. Hey, it’s 3:30 AM
Pacific time.
I’m amazed! Hillary and Kerry????
Kerry seems to be running with her, as VP.
No. No. No. No.
NO more Kenebunkport.
Nite nite CTuttle – and a fond adieu to you as well.
I’ve hit the sleepless wall as well and wish all you intrepid pups good night & morning.
Suzanne @236 we are so going to need a new thread! I’m a regular at this time and I’m used to posting long off topic thoughts cause I don’t think anyone is awake to mind. Today there is just so many comments to read so I’ll keep things short. I’m real proud of all you folks showin up! How in heck is FDL going to handle impeachment hearings?
InfoNut, I believe part of the strategy was to show just how obstructionist the Republicans have been with their underhanded tactics.
Good morning, pups. The NYT has Ms. Dowd (yes, she’s Ms. Dowd again today) pointing out to W. that Osama bin Forgotten is still determined to strike at the United States, and Mr. Friedman questioning the wisdom of the Iraqi Parliament taking a W-style month-long vacation because Baghdad has hot weather in the summer.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
Coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve made up a bunch of pancakes. Help yourself, with your choice of Vermont maple syrup, confectioner’s sugar or that big bowl of mixed fresh fruits and berries. Have a good day.
thingscomeundone, the day shift front pagers will be along shortly and we will get a new post then. The comments have been steady since I came on at 8pm west coast time last night.
mornin’ all … nice to get back up and see this is still going!
Suzanne @ 247
To leave his comments unchallenged, lends them creedence. Someone who was less informed, hearing this speech, might be swayed.
I know he’s just repeating GOP talking points that have been spewed for years… but is this not supposed to be a debate?
The last I knew, debate did not equal “Talk as much as you want… hopefully the judges of the debate will realize how stupid you are.”
Marion in Savannah @ 248
Hmmmm, pancakes…I miss pancakes. With real maple syrup.
nice to see wapo pointing out this morning that liarman consistently votes w/ the ‘thugs …
I’m thinking Obama is coming next and is going to take down each and every one of those talking points, just as Dem’s have been doing through out the night. Been some fine rebuttal of GOP T/P’s all night. The Dems just are not interrupting.
ooooh whitehorse is up now :) go sheldon!
Hello morning folks! Got up early and read all the comments on this and previous entry. FDL rocks. This has been so irritating to the Republicans, it probably should be done every time there is an excuse to discuss at length. Maybe once a week.
Sheldon!
Inhofe’s “question” (read: insertion of terror, terror, terror)was deftly neutered and used by Kerry as a springboard. Yes, someone should interrupt Hatch for clarification. Were Hatch and Sessions separated at birth?
Wow… Whitehouse obviously got some sleep!
Rock and roll!
Hooray for Whitehouse! The Senator, not the current address of Texas’ bad seed.
sheldon bringing up mission accomplished. loved his alarm bell should be going off when you hear those words comment when he ran down the nights republican talking points.
Yet another Racist Nazis Committe (RNC) member caught in the act now again calling on his god and wife for forgiveness (still admits he did this same thing seven years ago duh!), my question is WHY he works for us and this flagrant disregards for the people and the invocation of his religious belif and wife is sicking. THere is NO GOD or WIFE in the GOVERNMENT just the people you are suppose to represent. OOPS! were are talking about low life SCUM that are here for self serving purposes and got caught AGAIN!
Suzanne @ 261
Yeah. He’s kicking ass and seems very much awake.
nomolos @ 237
Thanks nomolos, Get ready for the new Republican talking point:
Absquatulation is not legitimate policy.
Citizen Suzanne:
I didn’t “personally attack” ANYone in my post. Spiderpaws had some close ta the border remarks to others so I jest put it out there in terms she could understand. I repeat I didn’t attck anyone personally,…if ya can’t take the heat don’t light the match
absquatulation is the new precipitous cut and run
Betting on the rapture isn’t a legitimate policy choice, either.
Norske, thank you for clarifying because I wasn’t sure if your statement was in jest or was serious.
Gore/Clinton
I know that is probably a little odd, but I actually like Hillary. I know she has deep secrets and a close connection with Israel (which is an issue that has to be addressed, but later), but she really could get things done. All we have to do is make sure that both her and Bill! (and all those other folks who have dirty fingers!!!!) know we will continue the investigations into the truth and the only way for them to redeem themselves is to be true patriots and do their jobs. Politically and on the World stage that would be huge and of course with Bill’s charm and diplomatic credibility, he would do well (and go a long way towards smoothing all the feathers that have been ruffled throughout the world) in the UN.
The situation we find ourselves in today is because we became lax in paying attention to what is really going on, so as long as we do not allow that to happen again, and continue the push for honesty and the truth we really are smart enough to make it work…
Good morning!
Excellent… Whitehouse is demolishing the 18 benchmarks from the preliminary report.
Go Sheldon: This should not be too much to ask from the President of the United States – admitting that this strategy has been a disaster.
Wayne Allard is up.
Standard Repub talking points.
yadda, yadda, yadda
*yawn*
Riddle me this. Why is that CSpan2 has a loooong broadcast delay?
Marion in Savannah@248 Has a good MoDo New York Times columne which leaves me wondering? Why aren’t we attacking Al Quieda in PAKISTAN! Ossama is guilty of killing all those people who died on 9/11. So what are we doing wasting our time in Iraq?
GOPers like to say Pakistan is a nuclear power and so of course we must respect the fact that they are a sovereign nation. But didn’t we give General Preves Musharra $750 million in aid/bribes so that THEY could bring Ossama in? (great waste of the tax payers money)
Thanks to the General calling off the hunt for Ossama Muslim radicals are now free to make common cause with regular Pakistanis who hate his corrupt government. The General had to storm a Mosque recently, there has been street protests and how many times has the General almost been assassinated?
So by not going after Ossama in PAKISTAN we have let not only let Ossama build up his terroist organization again. We have let Ossama destabilze a country with NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
If Ossama takes over Pakistan…well we are going to war. But I want Bush IMPEACHED FIRST FOR BEING A MORON!
Boston1775 @ 266
Indeed it is. I chose to sleep most of the evening, but caught the Dems filibustering their own bill last night. Nowhere did they explain what exactly would happen if we do absquatulate out of Iraq. I would like to hear from some of the folks here what the foreign policy implications–not just the troops come home–but what the foreseeable future would look like if we DO absquatulate.
I kinda doubt that absquatulation will be a repug talking point. Their base & I suspect most of repug reps & sens know squat what absquatulation means let alone how to spell it, lol.
Damn. I fell asleep during the slumber party on the hill. And, to make things worse, I fell asleep with a Klondike Bar in my hand. Geez….what a mess.
Do you get the feeling Allard checked his heart and soul at the door?
dayam, ccmask, at least it was in your hand and not on your keyboard.
Did you stay up all night Suzanne?
Support our preznit not our troops!
been here since shortly before trex posted the first late nite, ccmask. am getting rummy and will be headed off to bed soon.
jackie @ 269
I do find support of Hillary odd. For the life of me, I cannot understand how people just gloss over the vote to authorize invading Iraq. Looking through the comments here, she said something to the effect of completing the mission, so time to get out. WTF?!? The mission ITSELF was the problem. There were MILLIONS of people around the world taking to the streets before the invasion began saying, “Stop! Why are you considering invading a dilapidated country that is a sworn mortal ememy of Osama bin Forgotten?!?”
And Clinton is defending it to this day.
Sorry, but the “intelligence reports at the time” is a total smokescreen. Edwards voted for it also which is enough have doubts about him. Sure, he says he was wrong now, but there is just no excuse for this. IT WAS SO OBVIOUS EVEN AT THAT TIME. Why do people overlook this?
The invasion of Iraq could be one of the biggest disasters of my lifetime, and Hillary supports that decision even now. ‘Nuff said for me to make a decision.
It’s a shame, since with three daughters I would love for them to grow up in a country with a woman as President, like many other countries have. Hillary is not the one though. Pelosi sure, but not the world’s greatest triangulator. Sad…
Suzanne @ 283
Wow. You did great. Any highlights or breakthroughs?
Okay, I’m unclear on a couple things… please be patient with a Senatorial newbie.
1. Why is there going to be a vote on this amendment at 11:00?
Why do we need 60 votes to get this passed, instead of a simple majority?
(Please excuse any spelling errors… I’ve been watching CSPAN all night)
Wow. People are awake here, I thought I was going it alone. I would’ve posted comments more frequently had I known to check.
Some thoughts…
Is it me, or did United States Senator Orrin Hatch’s description of Iran’s government make you think of things that our government in it’s current configuration would eventually get to doing?
By the way he didn’t take long to get to Iran did he?
He speaks of squandering the goodwill of our allies in other countries if we redeploy. Is he fucking serious? What goodwill? What allies?
Then he compares it to the Cold war (which was once again against a single state), but then states it’s different than Vietnam because the VC didn’t have the ability to attack us here. Do you know any Iraqi insurgent organizations with the ability to attack the U.S.?
He also does everything he can to make any sensible change in strategy seem cowardly. If I pursue a strategy whereas I don’t (or anyone who is representing me doesn’t) have to die, then that isn’t cowardly, it’s intelligent.
He says we have finally mastered counter insurgency tactics and that we now dominate the field of battle. Check the stats, tell me what you think the numbers say to you. To me they say he is stupid, at best; a liar who doesn’t value the lives of his fellow citizens more than an obviously failed strategy devised by members of his political party, at worst.
His assertion that we (people who are done with the waste) want to abandon without a strategy is hypocritical because they (people invested in a failed effort) invaded without a strategy is really baffling. It’s like he didn’t even read what he was opposing. His statement also attempts to create a false equality between the two things. Invading without a plan costs us resources. Redeploying (which is in itself… wait for it… a… PLAN!) costs us less resources.
I love his quoted analogy, which I will paraphrase:
If some someone tells you the boat you’re on is on fire and you jump off, and once you do you find out that it wasn’t on fire you only have two choices, swim or drown.
This from the self-avowed anti-hypocrite. How ridiculous is that? This from the, ‘You down with W.M.D.? Yeah you know me.’ crowd. Un-fucking-believable.
At least he is honest in saying he wants to stay there longer than the remainder of his lifetime, let’s hope he doesn’t get his way.
Mornin’ Joe’s crowd must be reading FDL. He’s saying Congress shouldn’t go on vacation for a month until this problem is solved.
Welcome to the club, Joe!
As I’ve been saying, No Recess. And as long as they’re in session to resolve the Iraq amendments, they can put more hearings on their schedule and move along investigations on things like USA atty firings…and corruption….and, oh, yes, a new committee assignment for investigations of Katrina.
And, lest they think we’re giving up: Impeachment.
The BushCo crowd thinks if they can get thru this weekend they’re safe til Sept. Well, our troops are damn far from safe…and evidently so are we. The NIE-spinning uses some pretty deceptive language. “they’re not as strong as they would have been…WTF?”
Oh, and, no weekends at Camp David or using AF One or govt aircraft for little getaways to Crawford or Kennebunkport, either.
Suzanne and everyone behind the scenes: Thank you
that’s it for me tonight folks. ccmask @ 284
yeah, almost 1400 comments since TRex posted the first late nite left the place hopping all nite. i’ve hit the wall and am off to bed now.
ccmask @ 278
707!! Must have been!
I’m glad I quit eating before I fell asleep.
Suzanne @ 283
what a trooper!
Don’t know if there’s been anything here abouit this, but it caught my attention.
Bush has nominated someone to replace Alito on the 3rd Circuit without so much as consulting with either of NJ’s senators who had been under the imnpression that he was going to nominate someone else (whom they would have supported). This nominee – Shalom Stone- has to be checked thoroughly. He’s only 44 and he’ll be around long after these guys are gone.
Whitehouse is an inspirational genius!
We desperately need him on the talking head circuit – he’s no threat to our current candidates.
Donald Trump to Mornin’ Joe–after hittin’ on Mika–”This administration is a total disaster.”
Max Cleland
Pat Tillman
beerfart liberal @ 293
Another reason for No Recess!
nite suzanne and thanks for all you do.
beerfart liberal @ 292
Federalist Society?
Further Trump at Mornin’ Joe: why aren’t we looking at the borders of Pakistan? Where our real enemies are? We’re in the middle of a Civil War.
Sing it, Donald.
Boston1775 @ 279
nah, he didn’t have one when he showed up. nothing to check …. one of our two stellar home state senators :-(
I want to know who decided to award Pat Tillman the Silver Star. Who decided, when those at the White House had been informed that he died after being shot in the head by his own troops, to write the lies?
Who decided to destroy his diary rather than give his precious words to his family?
Who decided to burn his uniform?
Who allowed the bullying of the kids who were with Pat when he died?
Who decided to allow a very public memorial service to proceed based on the concocted lies?
What kind of people can attack Max Cleland and manipulate the death of Pat Tillman?
Good morning pups. Is Harriet behind bars yet?
Boston1775 @ 302
History’s
actorsmobsters.2009 agenda item No. 2 (after removal of troops from Iraq):
Removal of all Federalist Society judges.
Mornin’ Joe now giving Fran Townsend Bushsh*t spinning time.
Newer face because nobody believes the old faces in this crowd.
Inhofe?? I’m seriously gonna gag now.
Oh, and new thread upstairs.
Finally, a Democrat has interrupted.
Every day should be a filibuster until we end the war! No weekends off No Vacation until Bush ends the war…or the GOP Senators filbustering use this oppertunity to convince us the American people otherwise! (Yeah right like theres a prayer of that happening.)
But still shouldn’t the GOP at least try and convince us voters in a democracy that they have a plan rather than ignore us?
Although Mawangangi @287 makes me wonder if perhaps Orrin Hatch at least should keep his mouth shut, Orin has for me at least removed all doubt that he IS a fool. I wonder what the GOP poll numbers will look like after the MSM highlights filibuster clips?
Our guys have momentum on their side even if we make mistakes filibustering the voters will and have forgiven because we are saying what they really want to hear.
The Lefter the better it is now a thing is to say. The GOP in contrast hasn’t changed their game plan since Nixion blame the left, minorites, women etc for white male frustration over GOP a caused decline in living standards.
The Crises of the Iraq War is ripping away the selfcomforting lies that have divided this country.
We are united the war is lost!
Good mornin’ all,
Well, the WaPo woke up n the
rightleft side of bed today:http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..inionsbox1
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..inionsbox1
No recess, no recess appointments.. Time for our congress critters to make a sacrifice too. They’ve got *hard work* to do. Think what THAT would do for their approval ratings (to say nothing of our country)
God bless you for what *you* do Suzanne!
Is it a coincidence that the DC madam is out of business and Michelle Bachman went to Washington?
How bad has the NYT gotten when they lead with this headline
instead of something like:
So Sad.
why did he have his wife with him? she wasn’t voted into office…
I don’t know if anyone’s picked this up yet, but here goes, anyway.
It’s the “poem of the day”, by Xeno, on Lower Manhattanite’s fine Vitter-thread, at the GroupNewsBlog’s site:
“Just look at poor Wendy Vitter
The woman looks downright bitter.
With her husband’s pampers,
the hookers did tamper,
her life has gone down the shitter.”
Anybody up for a little Haiku fun? :o)
Pete… his wife is his human shield.
Excellent post TRex!!!! Perrrrrfect! Good job Suzanne too :-)
Tanbark! :D :D Nice to run into you here!
Hello ‘dere, Myrtle. :o)
