Rare footage of Grand Obstruction Party filibuster practice sessions…
I’m with Bill Scher on this one:
…loud and proud obstructionism of popular initiatives carries big risks. Either public pressure will push enough Republicans to the majority camp to break those filibusters. Or, voters will seek to remove those who obstruct what they want at the ballot box next year.
Either way, exposing the obstructionists will eventually lead to better legislative results than what we’ve seen the past six months. In other words, fighting for good legislation is responsible governing.
Perhaps the punditocracy will try to pillory Reid for embracing those insidious bloggers and those awful opponents of indefinite occupation (who comprise the majority of voters).
But Reid’s bold move is no evidence of political pandering. Senate leaders were not pandering to the punditocracy when they took its advice for the last six months. They just thought the pundits gave good advice.
And Senate leaders are not pandering now. They just realize the pundits were wrong.
Unlike the White House and the conservative minority, these Senate leaders are able to recognize when a strategy isn’t working.
Exactly so. Good on the Democratic leadership to change course from a failed strategy. Would that the entire Republican party could do the same, given their vast track record of failure…but I’m not exactly holding my breath on that one.
Bob Geiger has a piece today on Harry Reid that is worth some reading. And Digby hits this one squarely:
This is a good start. The American people are not aware that the Republicans are standing in the way of every piece of important legislation before the nation and the press is, as usual, failing to tell them. Indeed, the Democrats in congress are being blamed for the GOP’s obstruction. The Dems need to draw them a picture and this is one way to do it.
As Rick Perlstein notes here, the last time the wingnuts felt something was so important they were willing to go to the floor and talk till they turned blue was a long, long time ago:
History buffs, and those with long memories, will recall the last time conservatives found something important enough to stand up and obstruct all night long: the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The one that outlawed discrimination in public accomodations.
We’ll have to see if protecting their lame-duck loser’s Iraq policy is as important to them as Jim Crow was to an earlier generation. You never know with these people, it just might be.
Good on the Democratic leadership for calling the Grand Obstruction Party’s bluff on this one. Let them stand and defend continued failure and an egotistical refusal to make necessary changes. And let them stand and defend the Bush Administration’s failure to provide our troops with necessary equipment — which led to the loss of more than 600 lives of our soldiers through their continued negligence.
Republicans stand up for failure. News at eleven…
PS — Please keep making those calls on behalf of habeas restoration. Thanks so much for all your efforts!

Impeach!
Bang!
Ditto…Impeach!!!!
You know, I really don’t lurk looking for zed. I stumble into it from time to time when my way-down-the-thread comments get hung up and I realize it means a new post is up and running. And then I can’t help myself. Moderation in all things . . . (sigh)
Impeach them then send them to the Hague, where the world can see how American patriots handle thugs and thieves.
Saddam went like a man.
Bet Dubya soils his pants.
and we may hope that somebody who was there, Senator Byrd maybe? can just remind the Republicans about the last time they filibustered.
Do watch the video. I had some fun finding this particular Sesame Street clip after twolf1 sent me a similar one for a laugh yesterday. Thought this was just perfect. *g*
Like “precipitous withdrawal,” they looove them some “political theater” all around the punditocracy.
Just made my calls (again) on Habeas. I hope it is not a corpse by the end of the day.
I have one problem with this. Won’t we need 51 senators to be there? For a quorum? How are we gonna get that number? Is Reid gonna have some Republipuke Senators dragged to the Senate floor?
From Online Etymology Dictionary:
filibuster (n.)
1587 as flibutor “pirate,” probably ultimately from Du. vrijbuiter “freebooter,” used of pirates in the West Indies as Sp. filibustero and Fr. flibustier, either or both of which gave the word to Amer.Eng. (see freebooter). Used 1850s and ’60s of lawless adventurers from the U.S. who tried to overthrow Central American countries. The legislative sense is first recorded c.1851, probably because obstructionist legislators “pirated” debate. Not technically restricted to U.S. Senate, but that’s where the strategy works best
“The terrorist network Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil, according to a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the American homeland.”

We have to make a concerted effort to ensure that stories like this stay in the spotlight. If, and when, we get hit again, we can not allow Bush to be seen as anything but a failure.

I thought it was to make sure we couldn’t buy Vi*g*a.
Interesting to see MSM finally catching up to all this stuff this morning.
OMFG.
Senator Craig doesn’t have a position on this. His staffer can’t tell me how he is going to vote.
HIS F-ING STAFFER CAN’T TELL ME THE SENATOR’S POSITION ON THIS ISSUE.
So his staffer was subjected to a rant about how fundamental this right is, that his “position” should be a NO BRAINER because we are talking about Habeas Corpus.
His staffer says they’re getting lots of calls, and he’ll send me a letter.
Where’s my freaking checkbook? Mr. L just got laid off, I have no money, but I’ll FIND some to send to Larry LaRocco.

and yes… i did call lieberman’s office too.
Kerry just called Senator DeMint, Senator Vitter!!!! Hee, hee…. I’ll bet DeMint is next…
leinie @ 27
I got a similar response from Saxby Chamblis’ staffer when I called about the warrentless wiretapping just as the store broke. She said “I don’t believe the Senator has a position, yet.” As soon as I hing up, I turned on MSNBC to see Chambliss defending the administration.
While the video was loading I scrolled down the page to continue reading the post. When the audio came on I thought it might be from the Twilight Zone. Much to my surprise it was a Sesame Street classic. Haven’t seen it in years. Still makes me laugh.
Was watching Scarborough this morning when he mentioned that he and Vitter sat beside each other on the Judiciary Committee. The video is the perfect enactment of their oversight capabilities.
Q. “We don’t need no damned habeas corpus do we?”

Madison loves the video and I do too!
Looking at CNN & MSNBC’s web page, it’s as if this wasn’t even happening. Big surprise. Fox News, of course, says “Senate Dems Threaten All-Night Debate On Iraq”; nowhere in the story does it say that it’s the Repukes that are causing the filibuster — of course.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 7
Thank you for that. It is classic and hilarious. I loved those aliens as a child and still do. “People talk……”tic toc, tic toc”. This article is describing air support of infantry, not long range bombers, if you were suggesting that this is something to do with Iran (I know you’re a worry-wart about this ;-)).
This seems more evidence that we’ve lost in Iraq, rather than evidence of an impending attack on Iran. But I’m no expert in military hardware.
And I like these about fighter Reid:
Unlike Reuters, McClatchy does at least use the “f” word but downgrades it to “faux” status……..unfortunately, if what I’ve been blog reading earlier today is true, this may be an apt descriptor. :-( Won’t throw in another linky but more info. at Wash Monthly if you’re interested.

I made all the calls and then some on Habeas Restoration. I urge every FDL devotee to take out a few minutes to call. I call the D.C. office of each senator. To get the direct phone number via Google, I type in (senator’s name) D.C. office and voila! The number comes up easily. It is fast. I only have to change the name for each search.
Reid: “They’re protecting the President, not the troops”. He’s not perfect, but cutting rhetoric is one of his strong points.
Here I am, an American who’s lived in Australia since 1974. Still on US passport, even though I was granted permanent reisdency way back then due to ‘preferred occupation” …
And, frankly, had our ‘fake referendum’ for a Republic a few years ago been honest, I would have been an Australian.
Even one son who took exception to Reagan’s election and became an Australian, favoured the referendum. My late wife Marion, disagreed, her take was ” a popular election for head of state or nothing — why should we let parliamentarians (the political class) decide the future of this country?!” LOL, Marion, born in Melbourne, still turns up in television foodage protesting the Vietnam war …
Anyway. For a long time, I was ‘uninvolved’ and in recent time, could no longer ignore the problems of the land of my birth. And I have from time to time, attempted to express myself to them congresscritturs. Funny thing about the ‘world wide web’ … all too many webgurus assume the U.S. of A. is the world.
An American should not be ‘disenfranchised’ simply because he does not live in the U.S.A. and therefore a ZIP code does not match the assumed format of an HTML form coding! And so on.
I would have told Pelosi the table needs changing even though she ignored the people who elected her. Such is life (as Ned Kelly said!)
Just as well I’m not back in Florida, best I could manage would be as an old geezer standing on a street corner with a sign saying “REPENT!”

Romney spent $300 on makeup ‘consulting’
Well, “communications consulting” is how presidential candidate Mitt Romney recorded $300 in payments to a California company that describes itself as “a mobile beauty team for hair, makeup and men’s grooming and spa services.”
Romney spokesman Kevin Madden confirmed that the payments — actually two separate $150 charges — were for makeup…
Frank33 @ 61
I thought it was Rudy that wore the makeup.
brendan @ 53
I wasn’t actually thinking Iran specifically, although I am really worried about it ;}, but I was surprised how much bombing in Iraq is still ongoing. I guess I’ve been under the impression that most of what they’ve been doing lately is going house to house…but that is only from MSM reports. D’oh.
I do think the US is very concerned about the Turks on the border. I suppose these aircraft were delivered by the carriers. One could also propose that they would need a lot of air support if they were redeploying out of Iraq toward Kuwait in the future.
Good thread, Christy. And, you won’t need to hold your breath too much longer.

Townsend: Stop calling America the Homeland!!! Nazis.
brendan @ 54
Actually, the B-1’s could be used for longer range strikes. The F-16s and A-10s are for closer targets.
brendan @ 54
My guess is they’re strengthening the runways because they may need to bring in a lot of big birds in a hurry to get our troops outta Dodge…
LS @ 63
The aircraft mentioned in the article were not delivered by carrier. They were flown over one by one.
selise @ 66
At some point Al Quaeda will probably do a better job.
Breaking: Al-Qaeda is going to attack Bush’s new country, The Homeland – not America.
Townsend just called America, the Homeland, about 12 times in her NIE crapola.
LS@45
It’s a crime when I read the forbes article above, about increased bombing, and have to ask WHO IS BEING BOMBED?
Well, if they are smart, they all wear make-up for tv appearances. Otherwise, they end up with the bad end of the appearance stick like Nixon did with Kennedy way back in the early political days. The fact reporters are making any hay about any of the pretty much every day image consulting that any professional person does for teevee (including those self-same reporters each and every time they go on air) is just more proof for me that we are getting infotainment in place of news.
But then, you guys already knew that… *g*

LS @ 72
Definite focus-grouped fearmongering word.
Brisingamen @ 69
“Strengthening runways” is part of the impetus of occupation and there could be various, simultaneous explanations for it. They always want to provide for the option of attacking Iran, they recognize the possible eventuality of evacuation and, to boot, building runways is expensive and, therefore, profitable. So, in and of itself, it doesn’t necessarily answer any questions.
It was probably two years ago that Seymour starting writing about the escalation of the air war in Iraq. We have outnumbered troops there who constantly need to call in air support. These aren’t transport planes, either. But again, I’m not an expert.
JF @ 68
One thing to keep in mind about the aircraft in question they are reaching the edges of their performance envelopes with regard to time in the air and age. Also Darth wants a bit of saber rattling before impeachment, scare the good folks one more time before being frog marched out of office.
brendan @ 54
Article talks about our B1’s having been repositioned from Diego Garcia to Iraq. They are our primo long distance stealth heavy bombers. Indeed, this is something to worry about in conjunction with the three carrier task forces.

Here is Greenwald today about the Politico’s Romney makeup:
MSNBC on board…
Townsend on right half of split screen.
On left, alternating video clips of dust-strewn Manhattan on September 11th with clips of jihadist training camps, OBL and company, and black-clad men in cars streaming through the streets of an *unknown* ramshackle city, brandishing automatic weapons.
Feel the safety.
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I’ve been calling senators right and left, so to speak. As a former Idahoan, I felt compelled to call Sen. Craig’s office and received from a very polite staffer a statement similar to what leinie and Naraka received. I hope he’s being bombarded with pro-habeas calls. And Idaho a rational state — mwah ha ha! My grandfather (a native, and resident for 94 years) spins in his grave…
A big thanks to Christy and the entire firedoglake crew for your spectacular efforts!
Adie @81 – I sent an e-mail to Craig before I made the phone call.
Told him very similar things – that I couldn’t BELIEVE that I had to contact him about this issue. That there was even a question. Told him it wasn’t a party thing, it was an American thing.
I’ll get a condescending letter from him in about six months. Like I always do.
Frank33 @ 61
that explains it, then.
i thot he looked made up, heh. sorta like a cardboard cutout.

Honestly, it sounds almost treasonous or something to refer to America by another name. I guess during their coup they forgot to tell us we’re not in America anymore. There’s probably some secret directive somewhere that says that. God, I hate these people.

Two words: Shiny object.
One word: fearmongering
If you take the entire transcript of Townsend’s “speech”, and you listen to what she is describing, you could say she is describing “their” own tactics. What is black is white, what is white is black.
btw, am thinking about getting a new digital camera to take with me to YKos. I need a new one, but I want something easy to use without a million tricky bells and whistles. Anyone have a camera that they love that is compact but takes decent enough shots? Something that a tech-challenged person such as myself could use and get some good pix for the blog?

It described them being used for air support, but who’s to say it’s the truth. Point taken.
Here is a site you may be familiar with (I recommend this to LS, selise, and others, too); I got if from boomantribune and it had great coverage of last summer’s invasion of Lebanon. The site’s name unfortunately bears the words of John Wilkes Booth: http://turcopolier.typepad.com/

I love my Canon PowerShot A530. Set it on Auto, point, click, shoot.
And this is somewhat sad, really:
LS: regarding the bomber increase, I wouldn’t worry too much. Any president whose party is CLEARLY discussing impeachment of him, in the cloakrooms, does not have the leeway to start a regional (if we’re lucky) war in the mid-east.
I promise you, there are generals in the pentagon, almost certainly, GROUND generals, who will leak like sieves, if bush tries to do a Pearl Harbor on Iran.
CentCom currently has a full plate in Iraq, and has zero interest in finding out what the Iraqi Shia will do, if bush starts bombing the Iranian Shia.
Does anyone think the Brits still left, sitting behind the wire at the Basra Airport, want to find out how many of the Shiites down there, will be angry enough at a sneak attack on Iran to come at them really hard?
I think Gordon Brown has told bush:
“You do Iran, and you are on your own, asshole.”
The Iranians are notoriously close-mouthed about their military capabilities, but a couple of years ago, they released a clip of them dropping one of those Russian “Squall” torpedos (225mph) off a torpedo boat. No target; no boom; just the drop:
Oil spiked 2 dollars a barrel. :o)
Think the small gulf nations want to see a mid-east war get cranked up?
By the CIA’s own estimate, by the end of the Russian’s stay in Afghanistan, the Iranians had scored about a hundred of the Stinger missiles. Which means that the Russians techies got a few of them, and have certainly come up with some nifty upgrades, and have probably given some of them, and the tech, to Teheran. A few dozen of THOSE smuggled into Iraq, and the price of air-support poker will go through the roof, for our military. And they know it.
The bushCo Koolaid and Snakeoil Medicine Company has used up all of it’s “product” cred with the first bloody batch. How are they going to get us (”us” including Wall St., the Old Republicans, a LOT of our military, and any meaningful numbers of the american people) to swill more of it?
The world is even sicker of this misery than are we. Now it’s just a question of finding the least bloody and chaotic result of this lunatic’s crusade.
And that result does NOT include starting a mid-east war.
Mobile Beauty Team members are lugging their equipment from the chopper seemingly without regard for their own safety…these are dedicated professionals…back to the newsroom
Gromit, LS, selise:
To wit:
From http://turcopolier.typepad.com/
“The Hizbullah Lebanese are preparing for renewal of their war with Israel. They are building new fortified “belts” and “stand alone” fortified zones. The “anti-aircraft equipment” is going to make a big difference this time. Israeli pilots are not used to being shot at from the ground while trying to attack targets. Pilots’ aim is not as good under those conditions. Ask a pilot if that is not true.
What are they doing in the Bekaa Valley? Among other things they are training for how they will fight this time. I presume that someone is watching this?
What are the Israelis doing? They are preparing for a drive into Syria across the Golan heights, a “decisive” battle with the Syrians between there and Damascus and then a left “hook” into Lebanon to execute a “turning movement” against Hizbullah.
Will that coincide with American action against Iran? Someone should ask the Chenians that. pl

I need a better word than “asshat”, but it’ll do for the moment.
Biodun @ 110
That is because they probably invented him in the first place. They can’t keep their story straight. Some reporters went to Zarqawi’s home town in Jordon, and no one knew who he was out of a very small population, but they did know he was a “legend”. I always thought the pictures of him looked photoshopped.
Is this accurate? (I found this @Washington monthly):
QUORUM CALL….Over at The Corner, David Freddoso of the Evans-Novak Inside Political Report says that Harry Reid’s plan to keep the Senate in session Tuesday night isn’t going to work:
Right now, there are only 50 working Democratic Senators (Tim Johnson D, S.D. hasn’t cast a vote yet this year), and there are only 49 if you don’t include Joe Lieberman.
….You need 51 senators for a quorum, in the event that someone makes a quorum call — which any senator can make at any time. So all it takes is one Republican to stay in the chamber, object to anything the Democrats try to do, and then note the absence of a quorum. When the quorum is called, and only 50 senators are present, the Senate adjourns (or at least it can’t come out of the quorum call without unanimous consent), and the whole stupid stunt is over before Senator Byrd can even begin his outraged four-hour speech.

Staffer says Sen. Snowe hasn’t decided, and I told him deciding this ain’t all that hard. Seven mins. on hold, but worth it. What ain’t she getting? Is it better to talk their ear off, or keep it short so others can get thru? Keep the fire on em pups.
Peace, bluejeansntshirt

i agree, pat lang is a must read. don’t know why he left VIPS, but i’ve found all of them useful to read.

Frustrating, isn’t it?! Sounds as if both Craig and Chambliss, and their staff members, are really nasty to deal with. I admire you!
I’ve discovered the e-mail routine does work for me, as does being persistent. You just can’t let them wiggle away, or scare you away, but that is easier said than done(!)
Before DeWine was defeated in OH (yayyyyyyy!), I started writing him.
E-v-e-n-t-u-a-l-l-y, got the standard generic form letter in return.
E-mailed him right back, letting him know that his letter didn’t address the issue, and repeating my specific concerns of the moment.
Got another, slightly more specific form letter back from him, & it was slightly more prompt.
E-mailed him right back, telling him in no uncertain terms that I wanted to know if he was [fishing or cutting bait].
By now, his staff knew there was this stubborn-old-biddy who just wudn’t goin’ away.
Got a real letter that addressed the issues I had raised.
Still didn’t satisfy me. Far from it. But he knew, at long last, that he had a constituent who did NOT agree with what he was doing, and that his [quasi-senatorial] pretense was not fooling us at this house, nor would it have impressed my parents, who happened to have been life-long Reps.
I suspect he got more & more of the same from others, also, because he looked pretty weak-kneed & damp-faced by election day.
And now he gets to stay home. ;->
‘Morning, FirePups! or at least it still is morning here in Eastern Daylight Savings time zone…
Christy — I generally check CNET.com for ratings, and look for devices that are close in both editor review and user review ratings. So far CNET has served me well; I look for models and pricing by reviews and features, then double-check at sites like Amazon.com if the item is sold there for more user evaluations to confirm users’ sentiments. The Canon PowerShot SD800 looks quite good and is not unreasonably priced, and a sizeable number of user ratings at Amazon.com also look good. Any of you FirePups have one of these cameras?
I’m in the market, too, still using a 4 year-old Olympus C-700, would like something faster — but I think I will have to wait until I get an actual job to get my oh-so-desired Nikon D80. [sigh]

Growing up outside Yellow Springs Ohio (Serling went to Antioch on the GI bill after serving in WWII) I was well aware of Rod Serling his work, his commitment to peace and justice and his brilliant insights into human struggles.
http://www.cliftonunitarian.co…..erling.htm
Serling “All of Dachaus must remain standing. The Dachaus, the Belsens, the Buchenwalds, the Auschwitzes-all of them. They must remain standing because they are a monument to a moment in time when some men decided to turn the Earth into a graveyard. Into it they shoveled all of their reason, their logic, their knowledge, but worst of all, their conscience. And the moment we forget this, the moment we cease to be haunted by this remembrance, then we become gravediggers. Something to dwell on and remember, not only in the Twilight Zone but wherever men walk God’s Earth.”
We have had many Dachaus since WWII Tibet, Cambodia, Afghanistan, East Timor, Rwanda

They keep forgetting. Remember? The admin. had to back up & re-fashion a talking point recently, when some cad had the gall to remind them they claimed to have killed the same bad-guy twice, in incidents about a year apart…
That’s what they get for keeping multiple parallel blackberry accounts, i guess.
Ludicrous & repulsive. You just can’t make this stuff up. Honestly.

I was in love with Serling as a child I knew he spoke the truth
Throughout the 1950s, Rod Serling had established himself as one of the hottest names in television, equally famous for his success in writing televised drama as he was for criticizing the medium’s limitations. His most vocal complaints concerned the censorship frequently practiced by sponsors and networks.
“I was not permitted to have my Senators discuss any current or pressing problem,” he said of his 1957 production ‘The Arena’, intended to be an involving look into contemporary politics. “To talk of tariff was to align oneself with the Republicans; to talk of labor was to suggest control by the Democrats. To say a single thing germane to the current political scene was absolutely prohibited.”
And I’ve always wanted to ask: What kind of a name is Mitt anyway?

a diminutive of Emmitt?
Any Democrat considering a run for Senate should TIVO the filibuster, glean all the pernicious sound bites from their opponent, and keep it handy for their campaigns.
No doubt, the R’s who get up to pontificate will probably be the same ones teetering on the electoral razor’s edge.
And they will, no doubt, say a lot of stupid things and use a lot of stupid cliches, which will be political dynamite by the time election season rolls around.
This will be a very good opportunity to get a sound-bite that bites em’ in the butt, when the time comes for the next election.

His five sons are girlie men becuse they refuse to fight in Iraq (or Iran).
Re: Makeup. This is apparently more common than at least I would have thought. There is now an issue in Illinois about the Governor’s makeup having be paid for with state funds.

Hi Rayne, I’ve got the canon a610 and my bro-in-law just got an a710 which has 7.? megapixels. Both happy with quality and many features. Hope it helps.

Uh, the B-1B is a long range supersonic bomber, not suitable for local missions.
Diego Garcia requires refueling to hit points north and east of Iraq. Moving those bombers to a point north of Baghdad allows unrefueled, round-trip, low-level supersonic runs on neighboring countries…..
Just sayin’

A catcher’s “mitt” always has someone’s else’s hand in it, doesn’t it?
Wonder who’s hand is in the Romney Mitt?
Seriously, we know Bush was a puppet, and that most of the candidates represent “other interests” than the obvious.
Who’s behind Romney? I know the LDS and the Mormons have a LOT of money to give him, and I am guessing that is where the bulk of his funds were generated from.
But who’s behind Romney that most of us DON”T know about, like Hillary’s Tyson chicken and Wal Mart connections?
Anyone have the skinny on who’s hand is up inside that old Mitt?

Re; Digital cameras
We got my son a little Samsung S630 for around a hundred dollars. It even takes little video clips. All the pics on my Facebook profile page were taken with it,the only caveat is if you get too close to your subject sometimes it turns out blurry. But,that could be me,I’m just now learning how to use a digital camera, period. So far it seems like it’s pretty easy to use. AND it’s survived a 13 yr old kid dropping it a couple of times.

and we are SO glad you have mods. I can hardly read a comment thread anywhere else. thanks mods!
We the people are the only force that can bring about real change.
Not the massive egos in charge.
Not the massive money that has taken over governing.
We the people, as a whole, represent the only sufficient force capable of demanding and installing right policy and right pattern in our representive government.
Egoless leadership, not ego-bound falseness. Lieberman is the epitome of power-plagued ego-driven addiction, not right representation of the human collective that is America, which is a part of the human family collective that is the earth.
Only a sanity emergence among us all, Everybody-all-at-once, can make the difference.

Just have to make a point here;
I am a screaming liberal with nothing but contempt for Bush and his cronies. I would never enabel them or excuse them, or make excuses for them.
But talking about anything relating to our troops and our strategic plans, their gear and their future as we know it, just goes against my personal grain. It is one thing to defy a miscreant government, it is another to endanger the lives of our loved-ones.
We live near a bombing range, and thereby are somewhat privy to the ebb and flow of military activity.
But I would never blog about it, except for this one time, because despite my open defiance of Bush and his perpetual-war-plans, I still think that old addage “loose lips sink ships” is worth remembering and practicing.
I don’t care how much Bush and his wars disgust you, remember that I share your disdain. But you owe it to our troops (a.k.a mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, lovers, husbands and wives) to keep any information you might be privy to OUT of the public sphere.
I realize the implications of this bomber group’s movements might be something we all recognize as very threatening, especially to those of us seeking REAL PEACE, and not just a political exit and transition to some new Bush War.
But to discuss our military movements so casually, even if we disagree with this war, does nothing to safeguard those troops we are so anxious to get out of harm’s way.
We all want to bring them HOME, NOW. But lets try to do all we can to bring them home ALIVE.
egregious @ 93
Thanks, egregious! Glad to be here.
’scuse me, I left out “sons and daughters…”
From LIEberman: He’s basically saying he doesn’t know what to do, but he mentions Republican efforts and not one mention of Chris Dodd, who is a co-sponsor. What an SOB.
LS @ 114

Biodun @ 134
it’s similar to “Scooter” but more like “Rock” ……
Intelvet: sorry to disagree with you, but at this point, if george bush is insane enough to try to work up an attack on Iran, the first line of defense against extending the atrocity of Iraq into Iran, will be the knowledge that he’s planning on doing it.
And if he succeeds, a lot more americans, and a lot more Iraqis will die, as will Iranians.
Thankfully, our military is starting to speak out against the lunacy. Admiral Fallon is quoted as saying, as he rejected a third carrier in the gulf:
“Some of us are trying to put the crazies back in their box.”
WE need to know that that’s happening. And we need to know if the preparations for an attack on Iran are moving forward, in order to respond to it, and exercise our right as citizens to try to preclude it.
Again; I’m sorry, but as we know, push is coming to shove. We have them on the run and part of it, is keeping track of what they’re doing, including how they are using our military in their desperate attempt to escape the blame for what they’ve already created.
And when it comes to keeping track, FDL, despite my occasionally mixing it up with some of the mods here, does a great job of that.
As an ex-marine vet, I say to any and all, keep those posts coming. There’s too much at stake to pull punches.
Why does CNN and MSNBC insist on calling fillibuster a “marathon debate”? They refuse to call it what it is. What I would give to hear one anchor bring up the Civil Rights Act fillibuster.
JEP at #161:
Oh, give me a break with the “Loose Lips Sink Ships”! Loose screws sink them, too. We’re discussing articles in major magazines, not trafficking in satellite pictures. You’d really hate William Arkin.
And what, by the way, is a “screaming liberal”? “Liberals” are by nature in the moderate range of the political spectrum unless, of course, you’re a Republican propagandist.
EMPY @ 168
In this case it’s because it makes Republicans sound like statesmen, not obstructionists. Josh Marshall has been so confounded by the suppression of the word “filibuster” he’s been urging readers to send examples from the national press.
I thought good liberals opposed torture and agressive acts against an opponent.
Now were condoing denyiny Senators their sleep, isn;t that called sleep deprivation and opposed by Dick Durbin as a tactic of Nazis?
Are we really going to hold our Republican opponents in the Senate without due process? What happened to habeas corpus?
If Bush did this to the guys in GITMO, Christy would lose a lung from screaming at Bush for being so mean to decent folk.
But, apparently, we now believe coersion and just a little bit of torture is OK. So is it OK now for Bush to deny prisoners sleep? is it OK for him to play on-going rap music like having to listen to a Bob Byrd speech.
Will we be allowing family visits since our prisoners aren’t allowed to leave?
Just saying…
June 2004, Senator Durbin speech:
Let’s take one example: sleep deprivation. In Ashcraft v. Tennessee, a 1944 case, …….Justice Hugo Black wrote:
It has been known since 1500 at least that deprivation of sleep is the most effective torture .
Just so Durbin remebers he considers sleep deprivation a form of torture he wants to use on Republicans.
