Nice shot, LH. Now go tell the others we’re here.
Dos!
6th?
Yee-haw, the party continues!!!
Did Snowe just say she supports Levin/Reid?
Thanks, TRex. Now we gotta make this thread last until the day crew gets in so comment wisely, folks.
Ok, tres. Whatever.
Not sure how long I’ll be awake with all of you, my eyelids are drooping already.
I told ‘em, TRex.

I hate this Goddam Fucking war. every minute of its seventeen years!
{{{{selise}}}} – thanks
3 months, 3,000 miles and a change of oil?
Still here.
12th?
Suzanne @ 7
I have a Late Late Nite post backstage to deploy if you need it, Suz. It’s in ‘Drafts’ and it’s called, “A Brief Message for Senator Vitter”.
Good night, everyone!
Snowe is a good guy here
Hola
Does Sen. Snowe have cot hair?
Is Suzanne still sitting on the diving board?
Thanks, TRex.
No, she’s not. She’s a republican. No republican is a “good guy.”
Go Snowe!

From the ever-dependable Fourth Estate:
NYTimes.com headline tonight over Carl Hulse’s front-and-center article on the Senate proceedings:
“Senate Democrats Lack Support on Pullout”
Hmmm… some editing going on there: it was just changed to
“Democrats Lack Support to Force Vote on Pullout”
To the editor: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”
Ed*ard Teller @ 18
No, but when she puts her head down hiding the neckline of her blouse, it looks like she’s naked except for the necklace and jacket.
Nighty night TRex
yellowdog jim @ 14
You’ll get it sometime Yellow!!!
I feel guilty going to bed 12 12:30 when my senators debate at 2:30.
Is it the twilight zone that our senators have outlasted a good amount of the Late Late night crew here at FDL???
Is there a list anywhere showing in what order folks will be speaking?
cancer_cures @ 26
No, but, Hell is getting precariously close to 32 degrees F!!! ;-)
Ok, that’s the largest cross lapel pin I’ve ever seen.
Suzanne, I am curious. This is the busiest late nite I’ve ever seen, even being here for the liveblog stuff on Scooter, yet the sitemeter seems to indicate that it’s below the average for a day?
bg, i dove (a lovely swan dive since christy was here) in the thread immediately before late nite #1, at the end of that thread – and since congress got off their asses, i did too :)
Still here.
Did anyone else lose the CSPAN broadcast on TV at 10pm PST? My CSPAN2 suddenly began running the old standby: Medical Cannabis Information PSA. I fussed by phone and email, and when I checked the channel at 10:47 it was back on (live with Thune). Sen. Harkin was blacked out in my neighborhood. What was that about?
You might be able to actually crucify someone on that thing.
LawyerSmith @ 30
St. John suit?
I got here late and missed it Suzanne. You are working hard tonight, speaking of getting off your ass.
I hope the nappers are working even half as hard.
Shadowstalker @ 31
been busy for late nite for sure, shadowstalker. now image this non stop during the entire libby trial – and then verdict day – the averages skew because of that. compare it for just this week tho….
thank goodness the mod squad is backing me up tonight – no way could this be done without their help
Wow, are we sure Snowe picked up the right set of talking points? She sounds great!
Don’t worry…I’ll watch to see how they all vote ;)
lolo @ 25
Night, lolo, great to see you!
CTuttle @ 25
45th??
i’m really sick of hearing how everything is the fault of the iraqis.
TRex @ 6
One of the three RePunks who do, according to CSPAN video graphics.
/delurk
Is Snowe stepping up, or am I hallucinating?
Eureka Springs @ 35
It isn’t Eastern Rite, either. She’s Greek Orthodox. Maybe it is from a soldier’s family.
Joementum’s fundraising prowess for Snowe’s opponent has really put the fear in her hasn’t it.
Terrapin @ 43
It must be a dream. A good one.
MARIA CANTWELL, REPRESENT!!!
Washington State – you just got heard by your government, and how!
BLESS Senator Cantwell and her TRUTH TELLING at 2:15 a.m. in the morning, Eastern time, on the floor of the United States Senate.
She called out the hidden OIL PLUNDERING MOTIVES of those trying to keep us in Iraq, and explained why the hydrocarbon bill is bogged down, and why the Iraqis rightly resist its proposed privatizing of their oil wealth, and why that is contributing to the lack of political reconciliation in Iraq.
And she did it quietly, calmly, and devastatingly. Her comments about the oil privatizing deserve to be up on YouTube and highlighted all over the web (they started at about 2:10 a.m. and concluded at about 2:16 a.m.).
I am so grateful to Senator Cantwell for telling the American people the truth, that every other Senator has managed to dodge and ignore thus far. What a profound development.
She’s even offering an amendment with Joe Biden to renounce privatizing of Iraq’s oil and maintenance of permanent U.S. bases (in deference to the wishes of the people of Iraq). And we need to stand with her and cover her back, because Dick Cheney and Exxon-Mobil sure as hell won’t.
TAKE THAT, Oil Crook Ted Stevens of Alaska – you and Dick Cheney have met your match, only it’s not about ANWR this time…
Super, super news.
so now the question is, will Vitter take the lead in the diaper brigade during the filibuster tonight?
and will he thank Harry Reid for letting him wear one in public?
Wow. Never heard John Thune speak before. He’s got that bad combination of sanctimony and ignorance that reminds me of Brian Williams. Where do we get these guys? How do they get elected? How did George McGovern become John Thune? Isn’t this evidence of de-evolution?
Steve Colbert is all over the all-night session in Congress. Very funny stuff.
I hope she is breaking ranks, but I’m pretty sure the conclusion will be, let’s try some more.
Snowe’s feeling the heat of the upcoming election – she knows she is vulnerable being up for re-election iirc.
I think her cross is actually the microphone..
On that note, don’t forget to thank your senators for their time in this overnight measure.
selise @ 41
Denial is truly bipartisan when it comes to this war and its consequences. But I’m getting a glimmer of hope. A glimmer.
Vitter is a victimcrite!!! LOL!!!
Eureka Springs @ 52
It is. There is a pin which is hooked to her jacket, which is perpendicular with the mic.
You know, I’m torn between staying up and watching what I consider to be a semi-historic event….
and watching hour after hour of the most stultifyingly boring TV in the known universe.
Geez, I find myself yeaning for a Brittany Spears update.
IN
selise @ 40
well, I haven’t been listening from about 7:00 to 10:00 PST but I heard most of that couched in terms of benchmarks and reports. Earlier I heard stuff about Iraqi citizens as in concern and let’s let them figure out what they want to do…
but yeah, stop blaming the iraqis for the mess we caused. As Ware says, they have a different agenda than the american one…duh.
Eureka Springs @ 52
I believe you are correct ES- there is a cord coming down from it.
hey TRex: Michele Malkin made Business Week. go get her:) she’s the last profile in that article (#14).
Now on Colbert, the Word is “Whorehouse Veterans for Truth” in honor of Vitter. Pot-Calling-Kettlegate.
selise @ 40
And that everything is better since Saadam Hussein is gone. It just plain isn’t.
pow wow,
I just sent her a thank you email. She did a great job.
http://cantwell.senate.gov/contact/
I am not watching it, no C-Span for me. Does anyone notice any kind of strategy on either side in terms of order or anything else?
Suzanne @ 54
Fear is the Repug weapon and it is the only thing they understand. In this case fear of losing an election.
John the Revelator @ 21
i sit corrected.
she’s a medium guy.
she’s a RINO.
and she’s on our side now.
she’s medium well.
(and i agree that her cross is an injury hazard.)
My gosh, you’re right. Did they order that from Motorola in, what, 1966?
pow wow @ 46 – cantwell gets it… i did not know…
the things i learn when the senate pulls an all-nighter.
I would like to see more women in the senate.
I am back, but I have been very busy in the kitchen. I think there is enough here to last us until morning.
Talking about Vitter’s wife’s Lorena Bobbit position — they got their pound of flesh, metaphorically, I think.

BigMitch @ 62
Ouch! The only time I went to a whorehouse, I was in the Army, and drunk. The truth – thank God for penecillin.
I just emailed Olympia some love.
Snowe Steps Up.
Thanks, Tex. I just made a fresh pot of coffee for those in need of a cup.
Wow, she just debunked her own party’s “precipitous withdrawl” talking point.
TexB @ 75
Apparently the majority of the SCOTUS disagrees with you on that one.
Suzanne @ 52
Snowe is not up for re-election in ‘08, she was in ‘06 and won with over 70 percent of the votes. Her counterpart from Maine is up for re-election in 08, Susan Collins and she’s facing a real aggressive opponent in Democratic Congressman Tom Allen.
do-si-do,
“give war a chance.”
That’s a gem! I wanna get that on a bumpersticker
Loo Hoo. @ 61
And that the surge is working, so we need to stay…
And that the surge isn’t working, so we need to stay…

Heath Hatcher @ 81
As I said, it was from memory (iirc) – she is feeling some heat from somewhere, hopefully her constituents.
Ed*ard Teller @ 78
You were really drunk … that was a convent … *g*
Suzanne @ 85
Got anything to dunk in that? Like maybe the heads of some Republican senators?
yellowdog jim @ 68
I wouldn’t say she’s a full blown RINO,she votes with the party pretty regularily but does have a maverick streak(like what were seeing right now on Iraq). In my opinion the whole true RINO the Senate has seen in a while is Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and we canned his ass in ‘06.
Wordsmith @ 74
Yes, I noticed the same thing. My keyboard must get tired and starts typing gibberish. The ‘c’ key become q….
Liberal Heart @ 87
The SAA/Hall Monitor is shining his flashlight over on you two. Watch it! ;)
Hi all. Reporting in from the second string.
Been napping, but caught Harkin. Excellent content and nice tone.
What in the world can we tell the children re: risks of excessive sun when Thune and Boehner set such bad examples? Is this a *moral issue*? Shouldn’t the media be asking?
I think people have to realize that admitting to the truth of the situation means supporters have to take responsibility for a whole lot of blood on their hands. It’s not easy to do. The same self preservation tactics come into play when prosecutors screw up and get the wrong person. It takes sooooo much to undo the wrong. I hope Snow is on her way to this moment in her life. But, you know what, she isn’t calling for a new cloture vote or to end the filibuster, she is reading the mail and continuing the filibuster.
I get the fruit tarts!!!
Wordsmith @ 92
I thought that was the Thune transcript…
Margot @ 64
Thanks for the link… thank you note sent.
Wordsmith @ 93
LOL … I thought you were partaking of some really good rum.
Heath Hatcher @ 84
There must be some way to convince her to switch parties over the summer. In many ways, she’s more liberal than about 6 Dem Senators. I think being a Dem would ease her next five years in the Senate considerably. I realize a lot of New England Republicans are almost human comared to the Falwell clones which make up most of the party leadership elsewhere, but she’d make a decent Democrat if she worked at it.
Iraq security ought to be “..Supported by the international community” — Snowe makes a suggestion for U.N. mediation
Liberal Heart @ 91
Only TRex gets to eat the republicans. You can have some of the cookies I posted.

Hah. But maybe that explains the display of reasonableness- impromptu holy symbol, somewhere of in the darkness Cheney is recoiling and averting his eyes and hissing, causing republicans to momentarily slip off-message.

Notice how he only provides Shiite examples of terror, and doesn’t mention the Sunnis?? Whoops!
Margot @ 63
thanks for the link… i used it too.
Ed*ard Teller @ 101
Yeah she make a decent Dem, I can vouch for that. One Republican Senator that would of made a great Democrat would of been old Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. I really wished Chafee would of taken the Democrats up on there offer to switch parties a couple of years ago, that way it would be more easier to like him since he wouldn’t be a GOPer anymore and he would of had no trouble getting re-elected in Rhode Island in ‘06. I don’t regret voting him out because it wasn’t personal just business. The only was to gain control of the Senate was to take back six seats and Chaffee was valunerable so we took him out.
LawyerSmith @ 117
Nooo. She said she supports the ammendment. Let’s accept that and go get another one.
Speaking of Bosnia, didn’t McCain vote against our entry into Bosnia/Kosovo???
OK, all that Snowe did was continue the filibuster. She did not stop, she did not call for a vote. At the end she argued for more debate, more time. She is not on your side…yet.
InfoNut @ 132
They’ve all been quoting newspapers instead of reports and such. It blows me away. And that’s how the fricking yellow cake thing got spun in our faces…condi quoting the fricking paper.
batteries, schmatteries. McCain is on amphetamines or something similar. Trust me from 13 years in public safety and 45 years of observation.
Ed*ard Teller @ 126
For $1.9 X 10 to the ninth.
The issue is whether or not boycotting sponsors is fair game. I think it is when O’Reilley calls for a boycott of Jet Blue. But it is a dicey issue.
And then there is the truth of the matter. Was I being honest when I said, “I will never eat in Applebees again.” Yes. Had I made that decision based on O’Reilley or after the first time I gave them a try. Well, we didn’t go into that in the email.
yellowdog jim @ 127
First time in my life I’ve agreed with Ted Turner – prohibit men from all offices of power for 100 years !
So IHOP did buy Applebees? I saw something about ‘thinking’ or something along those lines the other day.
Funnydiva2002 @ 132
Yes! Thank you! Cantwell is one of the sponsors of the bill S.1634 introduced by Akaka.
Ed*ard Teller @ 144
I tend to agree.

Wasn’t Cheney the first one to use the NYTimes to validate his talking point on Iraq – something they had planted with Judy fucking Miller iirc.

My brother-in-law told me the deal is going through.
TexB @ 149
He’s desperate. His mouth was getting so dry, he yielded way early.
McCain talks of ethnic slaughter. At least somebody is bringing up what could possibly happen if we leave..
Well, it’s happening now. It’ll get worse though, and McCain is correct about that..
Is it Stabenow, Now??? I can only listen!!!
CTuttle @ 162
yes
“Laser-focused.” Sorry, Petrocelli, somebody just upped the ante. Has anybody here ever heard Sen. Reid described as “laser-focused”?
CTuttle @ 162
Yes. That’s her.
CTuttle @ 162
Yep!
So how many votes do the D.s have for this ammendment? Might Cheney show up in case there is a tie?
First time in my life I’ve agreed with Ted Turner – prohibit men from all offices of power for 100 years !

Petrocelli, I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. Imagine a government of Margaret Thatchers!
If anyone is inspired to call a senator about this debate, please look to see if that senator is on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

Stabenow? Maybe i should tune in again, she’s my OTHER senator. *yawns*
BigMitch @ 167
I doubt he’ll show up. He’s too busy locking the chains that are holding Meiers in his basement.
Stay on THAT topic, Sen. Stabenow – Webb’s amendment! Bring that more and more into the narrative as this filibuster lengthens.

Or indira Ghandis
Heath Hatcher @ 141
i’d agree with you on that except we have Whitehouse now and he is really a fine leader. He made Sushi out of Sara Taylor and didn’t even break a sweat. it was a work of art.
presidential timber, i’d say……
Notice how all the repubs (Snowe Excluded) sound hyper and shrill compared to the calm, moderated tone of the dems. thune and McCain both sounded angry
Cheney has his own branch of the government. He is not part of the Senate.
Petrocelli @ 148
Sounds like a good start.
BREAKING NEWS:
Cheney has declared himself his own country!
Ok, that’s great, sit down, make the Pubs wear out. The majority party must wear down the minority, not give it bathroom breaks. Geez. Rank amatuers.
Dover Bitch @ 169
DB you’re all over this. This is the list I’ve been waiting for. Make sure to bust it upstairs in the daylight.
Great work!
That sign has been used all night by Dems…

BigMitch @ 175
This is a nice discussion for another night perhaps … the Maggie Thatchers and Indira Gandhis were schooled by men to behave as men … Elizabeth Edwards had an insightful view on this subject earlier today …
LawyerSmith @ 142
I told you guys. NO republican, rhetoric notwithstanding, is on our side. NOT ONE OF THEM.
ANd I bet they won’t be, right up to Jan. 2009.
Believe it.
cancer_cures @ 161
better to happen really fast than in slow motion like it is now (terrible to have to say, but …..)
And that, I suppose, explains Ms. Bhutto, too?
BigMitch @ 175
You’re obviously bummed out. How about Golda Meir and Anna Lindh?
OK, that’s great Senator Stabenow – the point of making your opponnent filibuster is to wear himout – sit down! Stop giving the Pubs bathroom breaks. And, when you can get women to vote onone ticket, you will see your mostly female Senate. Good luck with that one. While you might not be able to get women to vote for one candidate, you can get white men to not vote for the female or black candidate. That’s why dickhead is in office.
My 184 is awaiting moderation, why? I said Akaka, not Macaca!!! ;-)
newtonusr,
Thanks. Please help me get some attention for this tomorrow. This is one of those issues that the MSM has ignored. Not only are most people unaware of the horrible abuses out there… even fewer even know that the chance to get the Senate to act on this will be here and gone in no time at all.
Dengre said it best:
OT in a way (not that anything is in this racket). I just refreshed some tabs after a hiatus, and look what I found at TPM:

Seems to be all about Wilkes. There are links to a news article, an 11-page FBI interview of the Duke, and a 75-page affidavit.
I should say against the Dems is why dickhead is in office and this time around, why some other dickhead will be in office.
John the Revelator @ 188
well, i don’t think most of the dems are on my side either…. it’s all a matter of degrees. if she votes to start a withdrawal, that will be a good thing.

I don’t know how I feel about Golda Mier. Her country did not escape war on her watch, and some blame her for not being prepared. She was clearly a heroine in the struggle for independence. But she did not bring a softer gentler more feminine touch to international relations.
It is something like an article of faith in some precincts that she must be worshipped like a saint. But I am not there.
Thanks for the e-mail link for Maria Cantwell, Margot. She’s also getting a grateful fax from me, copied to Senator Reid.

no problem, db – how ya doing?

But the repukes are waay against us. Some dems too, esp Lieberman and Hillary.
Notice Hillary is NOWHERE to be found.
Dover Bitch,
Are you going to be writing about the CNMI labor issues tomorrow? Diane Benson, who is the only candidate who has filed to run against Don Young in 2008 yet, has become pretty knowledgeable about the issues since we researched it for her last year.

Excellent distinction, EDP !!!
We do not need to choose between a weak, yielding female or a Cowboy.
Wife just came down and asked what I was doing – I said it was an historic moment in my country’s history and I wanted to watch it. She said even if China, (her country) invaded Taiwain she’d be in bed by now – good point. My family cane here in the second wave of immigrants in 1640 and founded over 40 cities and towns along the east coast – so I’ll melt whomever I want into the pot and I need to listen to her and go to bed – night all.
Suzanne @ 228

Hey kids! What are you all still doing awake? I told you when I said you could have a sleepover that you couldn’t stay up all nite! Now go to sleep!

Jesus is Sessions and the other hardcore GOP members are freaking broken records, all I get from them is Petraeus’ name getting shoved down our throats 50 times an hour and how just 53 days ago even before the surge really began we voted on the supplemental and how politicans sitting in A/C rooms shouldn’t plan a strategy.
Is it just me or am I the only one that is tired of the GOP using fucking Petraeus as a scapegoat? serious I still don’t undestand, whats so fucking great about this guy?

Ed*ard Teller @ 214
I’ll be writing about it at my place. No plans to write anywhere else tomorrow. I had a very busy work week last week and kind of dropped the ball after talking to Howie about doing something. I wish things had worked out a little different because it’s going to take a lot more than me linking over to Dengre’s posts if we’re going to get enough people motivated to pressure the Senate to do something.
It’s such a no-brainer, too. What kind of politician could pass up a chance to end forced abortions on American soil???? Somehow, this isn’t selling itself.
I was very frustrated by Arthur Silber’s post last week about Iran. I could relate to his anguish and hate feeling powerless. I thought it was a little unfair for him to blame people who are trying to make a difference, but it was what it was.
On the other hand, Glenn Greenwald has written that we should not expect instant results and shouldn’t give up because this battle is going to be incremental and will take a long time.
I completely agree with Glenn for the most part, but in a situation like this, time is not a luxury. The Senate will look at this issue and move on to other business. If we fail in the next few months, the exploitation will continue for a long, long time.
If we fail at this, it may be enough for me to hang it up for good. If we can’t persuade the Senate to end slavery in 21st Century America — which is within their power — then what’s the point of blogging?
Hey Sessions……what would Jesus do????
I’ll say it again. Reid-Levin was a bad idea compared to using this platform for Webb. Maybe we need to start writing to the Dem leadership, urging them strongly to bring up Webb’s amendment immediately after this filibuster ends. Immediately!
Heath Hatcher @ 254
For one thing, Petraeus wrote the new “book” on counterinsurgency at the War College, but he didn’t write it the way W’s makin him fight it.
Can somebody point out to these bozos that September’s only 45 days away? What magic’s gonna happen in September that isn’t happening now? And Reed-Levin only calls for drawdowns to start in 120 days, so what’s the problem? Oh — a stubborn, petulant, sociopathic Executive is the problem? Well, GOP, that’s your problem. We’ve got the American people on our side.
How did Nancy’s solidarity march go today, did anybody see it? We’ve been out to dinner and a show, just turned on the CSPAN2.
OK, Hang On.
Jeff Sessions. We cannot blame it just on the president. But the truth is, things have not gone as well as we wanted in Iraq.
He’s serious!

You are more than welcome. I think tonight should be easier. Injection sites feel better and my spine seems like it may be improving. Will let y’all know tomorrow.
Petrocelli @ 257
Yeah, that happens to me too. If I were a GOP Senator, I’d say “WWWHHHAAAaaaaa!”
Not only is Sessions a tool, but he’s obviously too tired to be up there blathering.
ET: I too. The strategic thinking isn’t shining through.
Ed*ard Teller @ 265
I’m with you, that is a much better amendment to humiliate the ‘pugs !
I just mute the rethuglicrooks when they are on and turn up the KPIG, right now blaring Tom Petty’s I Need To Know
Somehow I can picture Jeff Sessions and Lindsey Graham canoodling on a cot in a dark, quiet corner of the cloakroom. They both seem so closeted to me.
Wow… the words “Trust me” just came out of his mouth.

no forking way arsehole.
Ed*ard Teller @ 265
ET, I disagree, first its Reed-Levin, I think a mandatory draw-down is a better stand than Webb’s need for troops to spend equal time here, stateside as in Iraq!!!
I think the Dems need to keep doing this for every bill from now on – the republicans keep obstructing every forking bill that comes to the Senate with their threats of filibuster.
TeddySanFran @ 276
Which ‘pug isn’t ?
I love getting them on the record, HA he is chugging water now.

Dover Bitch @ 262
maybe because you are convincing the people who will convince other people who will convince their senators to do the right thing?
i will make some phone calls tomorrow, and try encourage others to do so also.
it’s hardest when there is a deadline to act before things get worse – that’s how i felt before the iraq war started… seems it’s the same for you and CNMI labor rights, arthur silber on preventing an attack on iran….
lolo @ 286
Makes for great Oppo Campaign Ads! Gawd, I’m such a political junkie!!! ;-)
Did Sessions just suggest that since we put our troops in harm’s way, we are requred to keep them there???
I’m not quite sure why they picked Reid-Levin over Webb for this contest. Probably because of “seniority issues” or such stuff. Maybe they’re a bit jealous and afraid of Webb. He used to be a Republican, and he took out a member of the club to gain his seat.
But the reality is – and I’m not the first to bring it up here – that we’d be getting photo and sound bite after photo and sound bite of GOP fools shilling out blather in their attempts to keep our troops having to ruin their futures to protect a group of fools – their party. Instead of giving both sides an out to blame the Iraqis on one point or another, the Dems could be continually asking the GOP “why don’t you support keeping our military forces ready to combat any threat” etc, etc…
I don’t see a whole lot of 2008 campaign material being developed here, but I can guarentee that a debate on the Webb amendment would be a gift that keeps on giving for the next 16 months.
CTuttle @ 291
Me too CT! Love it.
CTuttle @ 283
CT, we’re not debating the merits of the bill, we’re saying which one would make the ‘pugs look worse at Filibustering (is that even a word ?).
Having them stand up and articulate why the Troops don’t deserve more time with their families, etc. would be worse for them, as the public would see them speaking against the troops …
teddy, i’ll wait a bit – still 5 hours to go before day shift gets here. sleep well
I remember reading how many votes the Repubs have blocked since January.
Can’t remember the exact number, but it was huge.
Sessions was talking about “the minority’s procedural rights” or some such, and pulled the “Democrats did it too” card. I went and looked. The 109th congress had 68 cloture votes in two years.
Why does McCain keep popping up?
Oh goodie … McCain again.
(I think it’s Reed-Levin, not Reid-Levin…yes? no?)
Suddenly, Repubs care about the deaths of Iraqi citizens???
McCain is such a baby he had to wait an hour for the floor. What an A55h*le
selise @ 290
Thank you selise. I think it bugs me so much because it’s so hard to believe that it is happening and so easy to fix. If I were president, it would be fixed in the time it takes to get a pen out. And as soon as America learned that I ended a system that forced women into prostitution and then forced them to have abortions… I can’t think of too many people who would accuse me of doing the wrong thing.
Someone please show McCain where the camera is.
Liberal Heart @ 299
It’s Levin-Reed you know Carl Levin of Michigan and Jack Reed of Rhode Island.
Sessions AND now Mccain’s back Again??
Oohhhh! Graphics!
Ed*ard Teller @ 293
Since the Dems got to 56 on Webb’s amendment, maybe they couldn’t be sure they’d get the drama they are on Levin-Reed. Maybe there were enough who might have folded.
I do hope they pull this “stunt” again, and again, and again.
Oh, I forgot to mention, and it might help explain why I feel strongly Webb would have been a better idea than Reed-Levin. Webb would end up passing. This won’t. I hope I’m wrong about the latter assertion.
Also – sorry, Reed-Levin, not Reid-Levin…
Heath Hatcher @ 303
Thanks, that’s what I thought — but in reverse order.
Well, I have to call it a night. Goodnight everybody. G’nite Suzanne!
Dover Bitch @ 301
Dover Bitch for President!!!
Dover Bitch @ 147
I just took my own advice. One “thank you for standing up at the allnighter” and one “please keep supporting S 1634″. Silly me, I used the Democrat’s email form (from the links above about getting 50K emails poured into the Senate). But now I’ve got her contact page bookmarked.
Anyway, I took Dengre’s info about US Citizen children getting deported with their guest worker parents for a talking point. I think I worked the children/families angle twice.
Who was it a few threads back that wrote about feeling empowered by contacting congresscritters? Yeah. What she said.

Not really, any cred he had was pissed away three years ago when he made up with Bush and the religious right, called for Roe V. Wade to be overturned and support this godly and outrageous war.
And to think I used to admire and respect this guy seven years ago when he ran for prez, man times have sure changed.

I really want to stay. This is an historical event. I love this country.
Dover Bitch,
Abramoff (and the USAs/Fred Black thing) belatedly highlighted CNMI. Perfect illustration of profit trumping national security (not to mention decency, etc). “Petri dish of capitalism” indeed – cesspool of corruption.
I have nagging questions re: why those interested didn’t cover all for the sake of A’s plans for Sun Cruz expansion to the CNMIs (perfect money laundering op). Surely the $100m shortfall in the loan could have been raised in those circles. Maybe the murder was just one step too far – or maybe McCain threw a spanner into the works with his (less than comprehensive) native american affairs hearings.
CNMI issues could be huge if someone conducted comprehensive hearings. Doubt we’ll ever know the whole story..
Ed*ard Teller @ 323
Obviously they’re inferior batteries; he must have accidentally grabbed some meant for the troops in Iraq.
Liberal Heart @ 324
If that’s true a Dem needs to invoke Rule XIX, and force a vote!!!

When St. John McCain tries to ridicule the proposed mission that the Army should only fight Al Qaeda by suggesting that they should ask people planting IEDs if they’re Shi’a or Al Qaeda, is he questioning the President’s word – and Petraeus’ – that the enemy is all Al Qaeda?
Isn’t this heresy?
Ed*ard Teller @ 350
He is so Rovian in his talking points … McCain, how about putting up:-
A) A chart showing your dwindling support and
B) A chart showing your dwindling donations … those charts tell the real tale …
McCain, Sessions, Coleman: al Qaeda, al Qaeda, al Qaeda, al Qaeda, al Qaeda
Just want to put these Republicans on notice. Regular Americans get that you want to continue to create war.
Regular Americans get that you want to conflate Iraq with the Saudis that attacked us in 2001.
More al Qaeda. al Qaeda.
———————
No one will ever forgive these Republicans for not going after al Qaeda in Afghanastan.
No one will ever forgive these Republicans for diverting all of our force to enter into the Republican War delusion called Iraq.
No one will forgive these Republicans for trying to enlarge this war, even now at 4:08 am ET.
Here’s what I’m referring to folks:
The Right to Speak at Length and the Two-Speech Rule
Under Rule XIX, unless any special limits on debate are in effect, Senators who have been recognized may speak for as long as they wish.
They usually cannot be forced to cede the floor, or even interrupted, without their consent. (There are some exceptions: for example, Senators can lose the floor if they violate the Senate’s standards of decorum in debate, or, as discussed later, they may be interrupted for the presentation of a cloture motion.) Rule XIX places no limit on the length of individual speeches or on the number of Senators who may speak on a pending question.
It does, however, tend to limit the possibility of extended debate by its provision that “no Senator shall speak more than twice upon any one question in debate on the same legislative day without leave of the Senate, which shall be determined without debate.” This provision, commonly called the “two-speech rule,” limits each Senator to making two speeches per day, however long each speech may be, on each debatable question that the Senate considers. A Senator who has made two speeches on a single question becomes ineligible to be recognized for another speech on the same question on the same day.
The “day” during which a Senator can make no more than two speeches on the same question is not a calendar day, but a legislative day. A legislative day ends only with an adjournment, so that, whenever the Senate recesses overnight, rather than adjourning, the same legislative day continues into the next calendar day. A legislative day may therefore extend over several calendar days. The leadership may continue to recess the Senate, rather than adjourning, as a means of attempting to overcome a filibuster by compelling filibustering Senators to exhaust their opportunities of gaining recognition.

McCain’s geography lesson simply proves that the Iraq War has been a complete disaster.
hehe… who would’ve thought McCain would give a speech at 4:00am in the morning, and sounding chipper too despite saying nothing at all. Nice colorful map though. Hillary just on now.. looking and sounding like she’s about to drop.

OK, Hill, so . . .
4am my time: (pacific)
Good grief! I’m having a reeeeely hard time dealing with her Dramaamantic Paaauuuses.
And what is with her low tenor speaking voice?
Is she being real? I don’t feel it, because I think she is trying to get my vote, and she is “being” who she has to be to do exacty that.
Nope. I’m a 62 year old woman and I know. This woman is a big N.O.
Hillary at 4:15 am. she looks tired, but presenting very cogent analysis of situation in Iraq. but she and the other Dems have gone along with the president and his minions in the senate for too long and everyday the situation in Iraq just gets worse. Our government is no more effective than the one in Iraq.
Our troops and thousands of Iraq citizens are being slaughtered in the first major resource war of the 21st century. this is going to be a very interesting century.
I missed Olympia Snowe’s time on the floor last night, but from what I can tell here and around the Internet…she was on fire last night! Not surprised. When Olympia Snowe is doing the right thing right, she is eloquent and forceful. It should be noted that she and Collins aren’t the best of friends either, so I’m sure Olympia watched Susan earlier in the evening and laughed her ass off watching Collins show the Iraq Study Group report off like it’s a fine wine or something.
On the other hand, though, Olympia along with Susan has voted in favor of Bush’s policies over the years. Is Snowe feeling a bit guilty? Could be. I hope she is because that would signify to me that she’s not a jackboot licking robot like Susan is.
