Reader Zach wants Harry Reid to do his job — and make the GOP (the Grand Obstruction Party) stand up and filibuster the hard way. If you agree, call Sen. Harry Reid today: he can be reached at 202-224-3542 in DC and 702-388-5020 in Nevada. For reasons why this is important, see here. Or you can use the following toll-free numbers (H/T to katymine for these):
1 (800) 828 – 0498
1 (800) 459 – 1887
1 (800) 614 – 2803
1 (866) 340 – 9281
1 (866) 338 – 1015
1 (877) 851 – 6437
The folks at ThinkProgress agree. As does Taylor Marsh. And Miles Mogulescu at Huffington Post. As does Crooks and Liars. It is time to stand up to the Grand Obstruction Party — if they are going to block the will of the majority of the American public, then they ought to do it out in the sunshine, not sneaking around in the shadows. You want to obstruct, hypocritical Republican party, then you get to do it the hard way.
While you have the phone in your hand, please make some calls on the Habeas Restoration amendment today as well. (S.185 has morphed into S.2022 as a potential amendment to the defense bill currently under debate.) I am told through the Congressional grapevine that a vote on the amendment is likely for Tuesday — that’s tomorrow! — and that pressure needs to especially be applied to the following Senators: Lieberman, Ben Nelson, Hagel, Lugar, Craig, Collins, and Alexander.
Please, call your own Senators and voice your support for the restoration of habeas rights and respect for the Constitution and the rule of law. And throw in an extra call or two for the Senators on the waffling list above. For why this is important — and why it needs our support now — read here. And here. As I said before:
We are better than this as a nation. We either stand up for those ideals that our forefathers risked their lives to obtain for all of us – the right of habeas corpus being so dear to them that they enshrined it in the text of the Constitution itself, rather than leaving it to the Bill of Rights. Or we stand for nothing at all but whatever is expedient in the moment according to the whim of the imperial presidency.
Make no mistake, what the Bush Administration and its Attorney General are proposing under the fearful guise of a never-ending national security emergency is to collapse the three branches of government into one all-powerful executive during a time of self-declared, non-ending war of their own making.
I choose liberty. What say you?
Please, make calls to your Senators today. For your constitution, for your nation…for us all.

Please get Vonage or sign up for any of the other avenues for making unlimited long distance calling. I make at least 5 calls per week (and just called Senator Specter’s and Casey’s office) where before I never did. It’s very gratifying, too. Hope it helps get rid of the “evil doers”.
Calls in to Reid and Pelosi, now to this list.
Are we then inferring that the Bush boys and girls, are attempting to remake our government into a dictatorship?
I choose liberty.
I’ll call Reid, Boxer and Feinstein, and just for fun I’ll call Bilbray too.
EPU, indeed! Where’s the outrage? Is everyone on tranquilizers or something, and I just missed my dose?
OT – CHS, I’ll be in Morgantown this weekend for a wedding. Am I going to melt?
On topic: Check this out.

Oklahoma kiddo @ 6
Inferring? Um,nope. I’d say that’s pretty much the truth.
I took my kiddo to the bookstore over the weekend. And there, prominently displayed was a book by Hugh Freaking Hewitt about a permanent republican majority. That’s not the first time that term has been bandied about by members(well paid members)of this cabal.
The party of mass obstruction.
FYI – the chimp is currently bloviating live on cnn
I called Specter’s office to ask why Pete Domenici and Heather Wilson have not been asked to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee and the staffer told me he couldn’t answer my question. He actually suggested that I call Domenici’s and Wilson’s office. What a hoot!
Got EPU’d….phoned Obama and Durbin. Neither has decided yet whether to support the bills…sickening….left messages with Reid and Pelosi. I’ve hesitated to put my impeach bush bumper sticker on (since I do training for corporate america), but it goes on today.
Raw Story: Oversight Committee calls up Rumsfeld for hearing on Tillman death

Can’t wait to see Fielding’s letter that they are directed by the Decider not to appear due to executive privilege…then they can be subpoened, and another letter will come defying Congress…one more brick in the case for impeachment that never happens…sigh.
Bush is babbling again…and he meant to say “liaison”, but he said Lie-a-son and then quickly corrected himself. Funny.
Wow, Henry Waxman certainly had his Wheaties this morning, didn’t he?
Frank Probst @ 20
Do tell.
I know the info about where to get impeach bumper stickers has been given here before, but I have avoided having political stickers on my car, as I teach at a university where it is not proper. (I can have things in my studio and on my studio door.) Anyway, I am not at school much this summer, so I want to get one now! I prefer one that is easily removeable. Thanks for any help -

i got my Bush Ignorance is Strength sticker from http://www.stampandshout.com/. High quality materials, easy to remove.
i just called Reid’s office and did not have to wait but a few seconds to get to speak with one of his aides. correct me if i’m wrong but i think that means that not many people are calling.
fahrender — Based on a call that I just received, they have gotten a LOT of calls. And…I’d tune my televisions to C-Span2 for the afternoon. Just FYI.

Wow-between Feingold’s intimation that something big is going to happen tomorrow (well, now it looks like it’s today), 200 pages of negative feedback for Bloody Bill’s Wapo oped, and Voinivich saying W fucked up the war, I’d say the time is right for Reid to shove the filibuster down the R’s throats.
Yeah, “there’s somethin’ happenin’ here…”
What exactly are the Republicans and Bush trying to accomplish? What is the overriding philisophy? What are the goals of the GOP? I ask my self these things and I come with lots of answers. But somehow I’m not really satisfied with my conclusions.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A Republican senator says he warned top White House aide Karl Rove that President Bush quickly needs to craft a workable plan to withdraw U.S. troops fom Iraq in order to salvage his legacy.
White House spokesman Tony Snow insisted last week that Bush’s GOP allies in Congress are not breaking with Bush over the war. But Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, told CNN that he warned Rove last week that “The president is a young man and should think about his legacy.”
selise @ 45
Have a meeting today at 3 with Ohio University public radio WOUB staff in regard to our second (in force) request for them to air Democracy Now. A group of about 40 made a concerted effort to convince our pubic station to air Democracy Now 3 years ago without success. This is the second in force effort.
Their argument is always that Amy Goodman is not fair and balanced, not airing different sides of an issue. What would you call having Prof Dershowitz and Prof Finklestein on the Israeli Palestinian issue for different perspectives. Amy Goodman does a far more fair and balanced in depth look into issues than NPR.
If folks have any suggestions as to how to get Amy on please let me know.

I dutifully tuned in to C-SPAN 2, and there he was, giving a rousing speech about some French version of privatization…
The dam is about to burst on Don Young, Ted Stevens, and now – drumroll, please – Sen. Lisa Murkowski.
Now back to listening to Harry Reid trying to find some spine…
Ut oh – Harry talking about “a number of cloture votes” before the August recess. There are just so many things wrong with that sentence.
oh ho. Reid just said that he won’t recess until all the votes are held.
But will he stand firm?
And since no one was in the chamber to hear him, will anyone pay attention? Or will they just go home anyway?
If my party isn’t careful, the Republicans will figure out a way (pull out of Iraq) to come out of all this smelling like roses. Democrats: seize the momentum.

Thanks ! This is one of our arguments we have presented examples of this. Let’s hope this logic has worked we will find out at 3.
We have plans to hit it again…with even more people. If they do not bend we are going to a so called “conservative” station to ask if they will air DN. This “conservative” station is airing some surprising programming.
Biodun @ 72
“bedlam is dreaming of rain….” is from some L.A. band’s lyric …..
I got through after a few minutes too. They’ve been getting lots of calls. Reid needs them all until he stands up…
I live in California but told the aide I spent my time and my money in November to give the Democrats a majority to make changes for the better and to stop CheneyBush’s distruction of our democracy. Reid represents all Democrats and he represents all the people in this country who want the Democrats to make changes, not just the people in his state.
And then I sent the last two posts to my activist email list, also asking them to forward the email.
Thanks Christy!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 49
I keep asking myself the same question. Trying to fit the “observations” into a hypothesis is very confusing. My current thought is we are a seeing a competition between the 40 year plan for GOP forever and “Twilight of the Gods” mentality of Cheney/Bush, fundie and neo-cons. The report that Cheney/Bush have decided on the Iranian war befor 01/20/09 makes me think the Wagnerian vision is winning.
Hi pups. Long time no comment. I’m off work for a couple of days so I can join in the phone calling.
Fahrender, I called Reid’s office within the last 30 minutes and I did have to wait for a few minutes because the lines were busy. I told the staffer (a young’un with a sweet, small voice) that I wanted Reid to make the Republicans walk their talk. Make them stand and speak whenever they threaten filibuster and keep the Senate in session through August if necessary.
I also told her to tell Reid to never back down on anything again. Not if the Republicans threaten filibuster. Not if Bush threatens vetoes. Make the Republicans speak in public view against against sufficient respite for the soldiers. Make the Republicans vote in public to sustain Bush’s vetoes.
I also called Sen. Wyden’s (OR) office to check on his vote to restore habeas corpus since he has not joined as a co-sponsor of the amendment. The staffer said that the Senator’s staff is examining the language of the amendment to see if there are any problems with it! When I sputtered my outrage he trotted out the fight Wyden originally had made to protest the suppression of habeas corpus as a part of the Patriot Act as evidence of the Senator’s bona fides now.
I let him know that I was extremely disappointed in the Senator, and if he had been such a leading champion of keeping habeas corpus intact before, then it doesn’t make sense that he wouldn’t have had his staff review the language of the amendment and be speaking out long before THE DAY BEFORE THE VOTE!
For good measure, I let him know that I was more than ready to impeach Bush, Cheney and Gonzo.
Millineryman @ 77
Wow.
I just lost a lot of respect for Sen. Feingold.
He’s not living up to his Constitutional responsibilities.
Called:
Sen. Brown of Ohio: he supports the habeas restoration.
Sen. Voinovich: Thank you for your call.
Sen. Harry Reid: Told aide my mother remembered Strom Thurmond filibustering for hours and reading a pecan pie recipe into the Congressional Record.
Make the Repugs do that now!
OT..Interesting..Joe Wilson endorses Hilliary.
Loo Hoo. @ 75
A dear friend Peggy Gish who has been in Iraq for close to four years over the last 5 has been saying this for quite some time. Peggy is a member of the Christian Peace Maker Team and they began interviewing and documenting their interviews with people being released from Abu Gharib and other prisons 6 months after the invasion.
Peggy and other CPters were able to share some of their info with Seymour Hersch.
Peggy worked directly with the Iraqi people, every time she would return from Iraq this would be the message from the people…get out now!
Joe Wilson just endorsed Clinton.

*xyz @ 85
Millineryman @ 77
this is not like Feingold
I also have a deep respect for Feingold. He supported the investigation of Clinton’s lies under oath about his BJ, he supported the investigation of the WMD INtelligence SNOWJOB! (most of the Republicans found it more important to investigate the BJ. This is more important to National Security in their twisted outlooks.
Feingold is generally consistent and honorable.
Millineryman @ 90
With all due respect to Russ, I have to ask what issues are more important than restoring our civil rights and repairing the damage done to our Constitution? Once that’s done, the other issues will be easier to handle.
Obstructionist, say like in the way Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles is an obstructionist?
I think sooo…
How appropriate it is for the background music to this empty Potemkinesque Senate chamber to be by Sergei Prokofiev, composer of the music to Lieutenant Kije.

but won’t listen to American people…
What country does he work for?
*xyz @ 97
I give the man credit for coming to the blogs. I don’t support his statements in anyway.
newtonusr @ 99
For goodness sake…our country is going down the tubes and Reid can’t get his thoughts together. Unless that worst ever Muzak now playing are his thoughts…God help us.
Ed*ard Teller @ 92
I’ve said this before here: Hillary might just get that nomination. Then the Dems would be screwed, IMHO.
OK, now I’ll run for cover…
Well. If Joe Wilson told me it was cool to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. Would I do it?
I’ll vote for the nominee of my party.
From ‘less than’ Feingold
OK Russ, that is your bloody agenda but what about the agenda of the people. If bushco has committed impeachable offenses as you stated then it is your obligation to uphold the Constitution. Impeach the bas**rds that WILL stop the bloody war. Good god these people do make be barf.
WTF is Reid doing? Talk about a walking disaster!
Kathleen @ 88
I suggest we make a list of reputable NGOs on the ground in Iraq and refer to what they have to say. They are among the people and not hiding behind multi-layers of defense walls in the Emerald City.
Millineryman @ 106
Soft bigotry of low expectations…
Ed*ard Teller @ 91
Jeez Clinton voted for the war resolution, Wilson tried to stop the WMD horseshit. Clinton is unable to admit a very serious mistake, and kept repeating “If only I knew then what I know now” hogwash. (she has stopped repeating this flimsy response) Clinton was being a hawk with Iran up until recently.
Who got to Wilson?
Obstructionist, eh?
Like in the same manner Cardinal Mahoney of L.A. was obstructionist in the investigation of pedophilic priests regarding of the gender of the victims?
Yes, I do believe so.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 109
You’re maturing, OKK…
Millineryman @ 106
Who got to Feingold?
Is Reid going to stand up for an up or down vote.?
snowbird42 @ 118
That is what he just said.
The wingnuts and the media want Hillary to be our nominee. One has to ask themselves why? If she wins this thing,it’ll be the Arkansas Project Part Deux. Crap.
do-si-do @ 93
Is something supposed to happen? I don’t get it.
Maybe he tried to get some balls and it was so against character that it threw him for a loop.
Kathleen @ 117
Good question.
Feingold also hasn’t been doing jack with regard to his committee responsibilities, as far as I can tell.
He’s fighting against the filibuster OMG
Even if it means staying in session.
Thanks Christy
snowbird42 @ 119
Yes and no
I do apologize for the double posting. I was, uh, confused. It’s after Noon here and I’ve yet to have coffee!?
However, I had a huge slice of watermelon! Up to a mere 101 today.
Can someone explain what is happening? Is what Reid is saying good or bad. I’m so confused at this point….
I’m wondering if I want to spend anytime dealing with Sen. Clinton today. I will say this, Hillary, you better hope Gore doesn’t come in.
QuakerGirl @ 112
CPT is no longer in Iraq. After the first group was kidnapped and one of them was killed. Peggy and two others were kidnapped (this was kept out of the media) CPT left Iraq soon after.
Kathleen and everyone — The Wilsons and the Clintons have known each other for quite a while, and I know that Sen. Clinton has been very supportive of them through all of the crap they’ve had to deal with from the GOP wurlitzer (having lived through it a bit in the past themselves). As I understand it, what “got” to Joe was that he believed Hilary was the best candidate inhis opinion based on his knowledge of her background and policy experience. And, as he’s a voter just like the rest of us, he’s entitled to his own opinion.
I may not personally agree with him on that, but that’s is my right — as it is yours or anyone else’s to disagree. But simply because someone thinks differently that you or I or anyone else doesn’t mean that anyone “got” to them. Truly. I spent time with Joe on the phone today about this, and he truly believes this is the right choice for him.
sandflea @ 121

Christy Hardin Smith @ 129
Of course it his right and it is our right to disagree, and you have provided a forum for us to disagree and I thank you. But it is not irrational to think that someone “got to Wilson” based upon what our choices are now.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 109
Is this my mother? Just read Feingold’s diary at DK. I totally disagree with his assessment. So fucking totally.
sandflea @ 135
Isn’t interesting that one of the only people in the MSM who opposed the Iraq War, Chris Matthews, also so dislikes Clinton? Hm. Maybe he knows something.
Why does Feingold believe that the war will end while Bush is in office?
JF @ 140
Which war?
I’m disappointed in Wilson’s support for Hillary. I’m hoping it’s because he knows Hillary will select Valerie as her running mate.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 49
There are several motivations and goals (they have shifted here and there as REAL reality has leaked through their “created” reality. First: Do NOT admit defeat or mistakes. EVER. In this vein, run out the clock on Iraq so that the next President gets Iraq dumped into his/her lap. THAT President has to do the inevitable and withdraw troops, thus “losing” Iraq (BushCo post-withdrawal will do the standard neocon whine they did after Vietnam: if only they’d stayed the course then THEY wouldn’t have lost Iraq!).
Another overriding goal is Cheney’s: to give to the President dictator powers. So far, that one is working like a charm because the Dems are doing NOTHING to really and truly quash that crap. They are allowing the Cheney precedents to stand.
BushCo thinks there is a “destiny” for the US to be THE leader of the Universe! He will not allow any future Presidents to avoid their obligation to his Jaysus!-revealed destiny for the US of A. This is another reason why he will not withdraw from Iraq AND why he WILL attack Iran. He intends to try to make it impossible for follow-on Presidents to get out of the mess.
Feingold against impeachment? Joe Wilson endorses Hillary?
Say it ain’t so.
OK,I cannot listen to Kyl on the teevee lying his ass off another second. I had to turn it off. He’s defending holding people in Gitmo forever. Blech.
LS @ 126
Me too. He did say he was going for an up or down and that they may stay tomorrow and tomorrow night.
Did he say earlier something about no August recess until this is settled?

what has happened to senator feingold? you know the guy i’m talking about – the one who voted against the patriot act, the one who called for censure.
first he’s gone quited on the senate judiciary committee; second, s.amdt.2073; and now a lame ass justification for letting bushco irrevokably change the nature of american presidency.

OT, but could we please see some more of this?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19441074/
Kathleen @ 137
It’s not irrational, but it’s reductive. Joe Wilson was a public servant of this country who was attacked and smeared by an administration at political odds with him. His wife Valerie was a public servant, too, and the victim of a crime perpretrated by the same people. They’re just citizens, not saints, and they need not be for us to feel personally and perpetually outraged by what was done to them.
selise @ 157
Maybe the poor man is just exhausted. He’s only human and he’s been at it with these cowardly Dems for a long time.
I agree with Redd. I’m a HUGE Valery Plame fan, but I’m sort of tepid on Joe after he endorsed collective punishment, a war crime, IMHO, for the Palestinian people right here, at firedoglake.
He’s done many courageous things over the course of his public and private life, but he’s probably put a lot of thought into which Dem candidate would probably win, probably come closest to his neo-lib views, and give him a high-profile job, from which he could vindicate his legacy from the wingnut slanders he and Valerie undergo hourly.
My email to Feingold:
“I don’t understand the notion that there is too much work to do to impeach the criminals who are destroying our country. Nothing good will come out of the senate with Bush and the republicans obstructing the work of and for the American people. So why do work that will be destroyed.
I also believe that it is possible for congresspeople and senators to multi-task.
Or who got to you senator?”
I almost fell off the Hillary wagon. Nope. I’m not going to get started on Senator Clinton. Period. Gawd, I’m getting the shakes already.
selise @ 158
Amen. They “got to” Wilson a long time ago.
FDL does it again!!!
Reid to force filibuster
Feinstein calling for the closure of Gitmo.
I’ve got Clinton fatigue and would like
Edwards to carry the torch…

Matthews is one of the only MSMers who learned a lesson from the failures of the MSM to ask the logical questions prior to the invasion like…. “how come Iaea El Baradei has said the Niger documents are false” or “how come so many experts are questioning the validity of the intelligence being used to convince the American people to support the pre-emptive invasion”
For the last four years Matthews has been hammering the “cakewalk in Iraq” zealots when they incessantly repeat the unsubstantiated claims about Iran, and about all of the false claims made prior to the invasion.
He was one of the only MSMer’s to even mention (whisper once) the delays of the A*P*C Rosen espionage trial.
Fresh thread up and running.
Woof! Wagging tail wildly!

Should be ok now…

You know, I was thinking the other day how wonderful it is that we have a woman and a person of color as the current front runners of the Dem party. But I just can’t bring meself to like either one of ‘em. What a shame.
I really have to wonder, however, how much of it IS some kind of set up. Sorry for the conspiratorial thinking but I was talking to a guy at work earlier today and he challenged me to go up and down the hallways and ask people if they would vote for either one, implying, of course, that they most certainly would not.
This guy has been here for years so he knows his co-workers and this is NOT the most conservative environment I’ve worked in so I was a bit surprised. And yet all these people fear both these candidates because they think they’re TOO LIBERAL! I am not kidding!!
Ed*ard Teller @ 164
ET – was that the sestak thread or another one? (the wilson palestinian comment) thanks.
selise,
he’s actually done that twice at fdl. The first was probably one of Sestak’s blueAmerica appearances, but the other one was a couple of weeks ago, when he had to leave to take his kids to the pool for swimming lessons.
Ed*ard Teller @ 182
i missed them… will go looking for them now…thanks!
I’m not a “fan” of anyone. Sorry to be a groove-killer, but I say the “gushing” needs to stop.
Yeah, I’m the guy that got flamed for questioning Kos as our “leader” a few miles back.
Senators Alexander and Corker have each been contacted with my expectation they vote for SA 2022. Both offices told me that each had not made up their minds, yet, about how they would vote. I let them know I will be watching to see.
Sometimes I get discouraged, and feel like my calls make no difference … but, it does to me, so i’ll continue contacting them whenever the situation requires.
Tim @ 184
Gushing? When ours stand up, even after all this time, we stand up with them, like we said we would do.
Ed*ard Teller @ 164
For lack of a better word, I think this kind of attitude is inappropriate. These two aren’t political figures. They were public servants, one a whistleblower, the other a victim of treason. They’re so inextricably linked in history now that to be a “fan” of one over the other is frivolously irrelevant.
Wilson was a participant in broad foreign policy aims that have helped make our country and the world a worse place. That didn’t matter in 2003, when he became the most important single voice in exposing the crime of invading Iraq. Meanwhile, for all we know, Plame’s counterproliferation work could have been the same kind the Israelis practice. In the end, however, I don’t need to know more about their careers or their human, and therefore imperfect, personae to know that an attack on them was an attack on me and the welfare of my country.
selise @ 181
I’m pretty sure it was.
After reading your article I’ve decided to email everybody–my two wooden-headed rightwing Senators first–a nice email to my wise and progressive Representative second–and then everybody else.
Do have one correction though: GOP actually stands for
Graft, Oil, Pietism
Mayfly

from stephen parrish’s dailykos post link at 96—-re; clinton”She’s also accepted the invitation to YearlyKos, which I’m looking forward to very much.”
and as for wilson, he’s got a right to support/endorse whomever he wants to……..and instead of bashing him about it, why don’t we ask him, i’m sure he has well-thought out sound reasons……..after all, he is no dummy, as many of you like to state……..i seriously doubt that anyone ‘got to him’ he is not a weak-minded human being……pretty ballsy of him to endorse someone so early, is what i’m thinkin’…….i don’t agree with it, but i admire him for using his voice where he thinks it merits…….after all, it is his voice to use……..
egregious at 139 says-”Isn’t interesting that one of the only people in the MSM who opposed the Iraq War, Chris Matthews, also so dislikes Clinton? Hm. Maybe he knows something.”
no it’s just that she has steel balls and his are pewter……..
don’t forget the traitor Dems who helped vote out Habeuos Corpus in the first place. I’m deeply ashamed of my so called Senator Debbie Stabenow.
I’m sending her an earfull again re: this issue. I’m calling on all Michigan Voters to do the same.
Anyone catch the Vitter’s presser? He didn’t resign did he?
