Here’s the Sunday Talking Head line-up.
C-Span’s Washington Journal: 7:45am – Linda Douglass, National Journal, Contributing Editor; 8:30am – Newspaper Articles & Viewer; 9am – Stephanie Miley, Fmr. Provincial Reconstruction Team Leader; 9:30am – Phoner From Khandahar, Afghanistan: Sarah Chayes, Author, The Punishment of Virtue: Inside Afghanistan After the Taliban
ABC’s “This Week”: National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley; Sens. John Warner, R-Va., and Richard Lugar, R-Ind.
CBS’ “Face the Nation”: Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Mark Kimmitt, deputy assistant secretary of defense for the Middle East.
NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Jim Webb, D-Va.; Republican strategist Mike Murphy and Democrat strategist Bob Shrum.
CNN’s “Late Edition”: Sens. Joe Biden, D-Del., Trent Lott, R-Miss., and Jack Reed, D-R.I.; Hadley; and Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
“Fox News Sunday”: Hadley and Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.
I bet the green room at ABC is going to be awfully cheery this morning, given the troop reaignment bill that Lugar and Warner have decided to push through over the Bush Administration’s objections. But then again, maybe it’s all kabuki…I mean, its the Beltway, so what are the odds?
I do think the Graham and Webb match-up on Meet the Press has some serious potential. But that will depend on the questions and…well…I’m not holding my breath.
This morning’s bird photo comes from reader Lindy who thinks we are dealing with a Least Bittern. Sure is a beautiful photo, and I’m so glad that she shared it. What is catching your eye in the news or on the blogs this morning?

mornin’ Christy
Good morning Christy!
Oh Senator Webb on Meet the Press, yay!
haven’t read the Lugar/Warner bill yet.
I’ll just assume that when I was in Lugar’s office the other day on another matter, and mentioned that I appreciated his stance finally coming out against the war, but would appreciate it even more if he actually *voted* against it – well, that probably did the trick…
Yeah, that’s gotta be it.
This was the big headline for me. Excluding the incredibly bad politics of Bush that led to Russia withdrawing from that treaty. Bush is restarting the cold war – like he doesn’t have enough on his plate. Anyway, at least we can leave Iraq, now, can’t we?
Maliki Says His Forces Are Able to Secure Iraq

Listening to Washington Journal, one would conclude only Rs are running for prez.
Time to put on the coffee and maybe take a headache pill.
ixnay I replied to your question about depression on the former thread.
Good Morning!
Christy, everypup!
It is spectacular! here this morning, don’t know how long it will last, tho, the sun was scarlet at dawn. Can’t believe it’s the middle of July all ready.
Looking forward to Webb on MTP!
I’m a More Bittern person this morning after not seeing ‘Pelosi to put impeachment back on table’ all over the internets this morning. Eschaton reminds us of our Representatives’ phone numbers, as well as media contacts this a/m. I suggest we all send Bill Moyers’ transcript from Friday night to the Judiciary Committee as well as everyone in the MSM.
Morning Christy!
Is there going to be a FDL breakfast at this years Yearly?
That’s a really nice picture, but it’s not a Least Bittern. It’s a Green Heron:
Here’s Cornell on Green Herons and Least Bitterns. Notice the distinct chest streaks on the green heron and notice that the markings on the beak near the face are yellow on the Green Heron, whereas they’re red & brown on the Least Bittern.
Here are all of my Green Heron pictures to provide some color detail to better explain what I’m talking about.
Maybe we need to send Nancy Pelosi this picture. Or is it too subtle? ;)
Heh. Thanks, Julie. My boy just said the same thing. He pointed out that the beaks are different colors, with the bittern having a predominantly yellow beak, and the heron having a much darker, almost black beak.
Wish I could share the photo of the green heron in the National Audubon Society Field Guide, it’s a dead ringer.
Nice photo, love the action.

“The White House said on Saturday that President Bush would veto a bipartisan plan to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program,” which is set to expire Sept. 30. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bipartisan plan “would reduce the number of uninsured children by 4.1 million.
Bush has nothing to lose. Health care for kids costs too much.
Ive been all over this morning and no one is very happy. Going to Asheville to see Sicko today and I don’t think that will be cheery either.
Beautiful here today and good morning all!
Scarecrow, if you are there. Check your e-mail.
Good morning everyone. Wish I could stay and chat but we are getting on the road to go back to MA in a few minutes.
Please do document the atrocities so I can catch up with you all later.
And have a great Sunday.

Good morning everyone!
It’s going to be a hot one here today, 75 at 8:30 AM.
Via @ 8
Because Pelosi would be the beneficiary of an impeachment of Darth and Chimpy, she pretty much can’t be the person who “puts impeachment on the table.” It has to be pushed onto the table by a groundswell of public opinion and the back bench House members such that she “reluctantly” goes along.
snowbird42 @ 13

He just wants to veto this so he can blame Congress for not doing anything and wasting time trying to investigate him. Yikes. I’m becoming well versed in Repug pretzel logic.
hmmm, wrt to the Lugar/Warner bill, I just read this TSF comment from LateLate Nite:
It politely asks the Preznit if he would please start to consider developing a plan to start thinking about a way to organize the troops to begin to perhaps bring them home.
And would he please start to think about this by 12/31/07. And let the Senate know if he’s come up with a plan by then.
Yeah — it sux. It’s the honeypot the GOP needs to tell low-information voters they voted to “end the War.”
So on second thought, I’m disavowing my comment @3, above.
I had nothing to do with it. Nope. Not a thing. Nuh-uh. Wasn’t me.
I’ve been thinking about this Executive Privilege Unitary President crap since Sarah Taylor and now the Pat Tillman thing. I’m starting to smell a rat here as the claims get more and more outrageous. I think John Dean is right, that the fix is in and that Cheney and Fielding are playing double dog dare with congress to get them to take one of their outrageous claims to court so they can wipe up the floor with them. We’ve been two steps behind these traitors since the get go.
Early morning thunderstorm this morning, the first monsoon of the season here in Phoenix. Tucson got their first last Saturday. We were there for it. Wind, rain, pyrotechnics. During a friend’s outdoor sunset wedding service. Some couples would have been upset, these folks just took it all in stride. I love monsoon, but it’s keeping me out of the pool this morning and my joints hurt. Time to take a pain pill.

There had better be breakfast. It is a very important meal! (snark/off)
blast from the past:Monday, July 27, 1998
Congressional Republicans yesterday called on President Clinton to comply with a subpoena for his testimony in the Monica S. Lewinsky investigation, and one influential senator called for independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr to promptly advise Congress of his plans for an impeachment report.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) warned yesterday that Clinton “has an obligation” to answer questions from Starr and suggested, in an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” that defying a subpoena to testify before Starr’s grand jury could itself “certainly be grounds to file articles of impeachment.”
Specter, however, disagreed, saying that “I rechecked the Constitution” following Hatch’s remarks, “and I do not believe that ignoring a subpoena would be grounds for impeachment. The Constitution is very specific on treason, bribery, or high crimes or misdemeanors.”
Renee in Ohio @ 11
I love it! Had to send it around, thanks
egregious @ 6
as did Rayne and I
Rather then the “fun” of the Talking Head shows, and the bottomless bin of discouragement that’s politics at the moment, I’ll hazard a guess at the bird.
It’s NOT a Least Bittern. It’s a Green Heron. The reddish patterning on the neck (sharp border on the side), the fine white patterning on the wings, the yellow “eyebrow” all are indicative.
Not that Green Herons are so bad. I love the little miniwaders.
(Edit: it appears I was well beaten to the I.D. Ooops. Sorry about that!)
Marretta @ 19
John Dean’s article scared the crap out of me.
I hope to gawd that the Dems are smart enough to have figured this out and have a plan to use it to their advantage.
We need a new Teddy Roosevelt as our next president.
dakine01 @ 16
You know, I don’t buy that argument because The Speaker may be third in line, but it’s the House’s responsibility to bring forth articles of impeachment. And if the President and the Vice President need to be impeached — and they surely DO need to be impeached — well, that’s the way it is.
I woke and stupidly read the newspaper, now I’m pissed. F-ing British Petroleum will be dumping toxic waste into my water

Under BP’s new state water permit, the refinery — already one of the largest polluters along the Great Lakes — can release 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more sludge into Lake Michigan each day. Ammonia promotes algae blooms that can kill fish, while sludge is full of concentrated heavy metals.”
F-ing Indiana allowed the permit for F-ing 80 new jobs, bullsh-t. Greed is poisoning Lake Michigan, a drinking source for how many millions of people, Not to mention the water bottling companies that sell the “spring fed” lake to many millions more.
PROTEST BP, Don’t buy their gas. F-ing British Corporation poisoning American waterways.

I think this is it!!
Gore may decide to run if Nancy can’t pull this off. I think he,(Gore), has confidence she can do it.
Keep an eye on “Brother” Harold.
Mormon’s in the news, my eye,I think it’s time for a “come to Jesus meeting” with the decidererer.
They,(the Dims)may be actually guilty of planning something nearly Rovian in cleverness.
F-ing Indiana allowed the permit for F-ing 80 new jobs, bullsh-t.
Thank you, Governor Mitch Daniels.
I *would* advise letter-writing or a personal appearance in the Gov’s , but from personal experience, I already know that you’ll get no response, sympathy or attention. Mitch is cut from GWB cloth. He, and his office, just don’t give a shit what you or I think.
Sangemon @ 25
Okay. Beautiful morning in MN came to a screeching halt for me after scanning Dean’s article. (Will read in full shortly.)
If Pelosi can’t put impeachment on the table (and I more or less understand the conflict of interest deal there), then it is OUR job to make Big Noise that does not stop until the Big I is in motion.
But here’s the really scary thing. I am wondering if even impeachment will send the rodents packing.
The question that scares the bejunia out of me is this: After the legal avenue, then what? Not rhetorical. Do you know? Please tell me!!
I just signed up for Facebook and the FDL group, but no little F button next to my name…
Was I the only one who noticed gold opened at 666.60 on Friday the 13th.
Teddy from SF, tell me isn’t nancy the “clever” type?
eCAHNomics @ 20
She can plant the seed behind the scenes but I do not think she can do so openly. This is still a country that though improved, would still drop into extreme sexist mode if they thought Madame Speaker was actually manuvering in a manner that would benefit her. People would stand for things coming from Newt that they won’t stand for coming from Madame Speaker and that’s a reality
Delurking just to say “God, I love David Shuster.” He’s been doing the news in the morning on MSNBC this weekend. It’s so refreshing to see real news for a change.

you know, the media is somehow claiming the republicans “imunized” themselves from impeachment by impeaching bush, creating a scenario where if we impeach it will look like retribution.
let’s be realistic here, if the situation was reversed we KNOW the republicans would impeach and say;
“well, payback is a bitch”
that’s my first point, my second is a question.
I’ve written to pelosi on her comment page…has anyone ever gotten a response from her or her office by commenting there?
The Pat Tillman/Jessica Lynch Congressional hearing held in April is homework to prepare for this August 1st hearing.
The White House has again invoked executive privilege in claiming that withholding the truth of how Pat Tillman died and Jessica Lynch was injured AND concocting self-serving stories must be protected by the executive branch.
Renee in Ohio @ 34
Renee,
You have to go to your “Profile” on FB, and copy the URL then paste it into the FB box on your new FDL profile, then save it.
Make sure though when you are “copying” the Facebook URL that you grap the link with a string of numbers at the end, otherwise when we click, we would just get our own page. I.E., don’t do what I did in the beginning… :})

You have to love Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, formerly the director of OMB for George Bush, who plans on selling off pretty much the entire state, starting with the toll road and the lottery. This is a classic example of republican government: sell assets accumulated by generations of Hoosiers, rather than raise taxes. Just call him Governor Privatize, this from an Indiana blogger.

After hearing Stephen Hadley continue to support the notion that ‘Al Qaida in Iraq’ has a connection to 9/11, I’m thinking about starting a group called Al Qaida in Massachusetts whose sole purpose will be to undermine democracy by baking really tasty muffins.
There are days when I tell myself that the Democrats have a plan and they know a lot more than they are letting on, and they see Fred and Cheney and Chimpy McCarthy’s game and are putting together an impeachment endgame. Then a wave of hopelessness sets in and I think there is no way to shift the Overton Window far enough for Justice to climb in while the window is open. She sure can’t come through a door, This criminal administration and their republican minions have them all locked and triple bolted. We need a telephone pole and about a hundred angry progressives to beat the fricking door off the hinges. My husband says the Dems do have a plan, but it makes as much sense as the cylon plan. Sigh.
jayt @ 32
There’s another way. Ice Mountain Water is owned by Nestlé/Perrier. Water pumped out of Lake Michigan and bottled and labeled as spring water. A letter writing campaign to Nestle about the dumping of toxic waste from BP into spring fed Lake Michigan and as a consumer you will no longer buy their “toxic water.” And you feel its your obligation to inform other consumers and stores where you shop. Just maybe, Nestle will sue Indiana and BP for knowingly and willfully poisoning their ’spring fed’ water which will be the polluted toxic spring fed bottled water. There must be many more bottling water companies that source Lake Michigan.
Richterscale @ 54

I can’t watch these Sunday shows anymore. They are utter horsecrap for the most part, and they just depress me. I don’t want to support the corporate networks and there are just so many more constructive things that can be done on Sunday mornings when the world is a bit quieter.
I find it stunning that Lindsey Cracker Graham can be both so stupid yet his rudeness outshines his stupidity by at least three to one.
I think Crackerboy is lucky that Senator Webb didn’t grab his arm and break it over the table edge near the end when he added tapping Senator Webb’s wrist to just interrupting in his nasal whiney voice.
Mornin’ Christy and everyone!
I do appreciate the sexism involved in attacks on Pelosi’s power … still, I am wondering if previous house leaders have been attacked as having a conflict of interest in impeachment? I bet not. I think conflict of interest is a hypocritical GOP meme.
I get that we’d like a double impeachment and some could say well it’s different because of that … except it starts with a bill of impeachment against one, not both. It’s not Pelosi’s fault if they both end up impeached …
I just got a nasty response-letter from Orin Hatch, very typical.(He actually signed it).
With all the talk of the Hatch Act and his defense of the children’s insurance bill, I’m tempted to respond in a conciliatory tone.
I still think he’s “one of them”.
Any suggestions to include in my rebuttal.
He said:
“Men and women of good will can often disagree about the path our nation should follow. But with all due respect, your letter contains no substantive legal rationale for impeaching the Vice President. I certainly respect your oppsoition to the polices advanced the Bush Administration and Vice President Cheney. However, such disagreements, no matter how adamantly they are held, do not amount to the “high crimes and misdemeanors” that the Constitution requires to impeach public officials.”
He left out the “by” the Bush, not me.
I’d like some help being clever here.
Perhaps the dark side hasn’t got a strong grip on Orin???

Now that’s a creative approach! Get the corporations to fight it out!
We see on MTP today the proper Democratic response to Republican thuggery.
Webb was direct and professional. Russert let Graham filibuster. When Webb got in the game, Lindsey tried to talk over him. Webb bulled back in.
Exactly so.
Cowboy up, Democrats, and take off the freakin’ gloves!
Here’s an interesting tidbit from 2002:
Jewel Food Stores has quietly removed thousands of bottles of Ice Mountain water from its 199 stores across the Midwest after customers complained of a strange petroleum smell and oily taste to the water.
Both Nestle Waters, the parent of Ice Mountain spring water, and local and federal health and safety officials are said to be mystified.

I don’t think a double impeachment (president/vice president) has ever even been contemplated in this country before this. There simply is no precedent for her to go by. Therefore she is creating precedent and if I were her I would go ahead with it and claim her right as third in succession to the the presidency.
This is exactly the problem with the Democrats today. They will not do the right thing, including following the measures laid out in our Constitution to deal with a rogue Executive Branch. They just worry about how it will look to the Republicans and back down every time.
What would make more sense would be to impeach Cheney, then let Bush try and get a replacement past the Senate. If he finds a replacement for Cheney who is acceptable to the Democratically controlled Senate, then Bush can be impeached.
It does seem to me that the Iraqi parliament and our Congress are more alike than we would like to believe.
Any links to stories about BP dumping in Lake Michigan?
It would be very helpful for something I’m working on with a local group.
Thanks.
A Bush impeachment would have to be mobilized faster than he could get Condi approved or she’s the next Prez!!!!!
dakine01
Nancy’s duty requires her to put impeachment back on the table. She doesn’t have to run it. And the Constitution doesn’t say anything about the Speaker not doing it, beneficiary or not.
It’s the Speaker’s f*cking job, and she isn’t doing it.
fdl reader @ 60
Previous House leaders weren’t attacked as having a conflict of interest because they weren’t women. During the Andrew johnson Impeachment the President Pro Tem of the Senate was first after VP then the Speaker. From 1886 to 1947, the Secretary of State was fter the VP then in ‘47 the Speaker and President Pro Tem were put back in the line of Succession with the Speaker first after VP.
It’s not Pelosi’s fault if POTUS and VP are both impeached but she can’t be seen as pushing for it to happen is all I’m saying.
Kevster @ 62
Good morning Christy, and thanks for this “lowlight”, Kevster. Bush is nothing if not consistent. He is mandating that spending on VA healthcare be cut beginning next year. Apparently he uses the math that increasing casualty numbers of severs and lifelong disabling injuries equates to less money to fund necessary services. Get out your bootstraps, soldiers.
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 63
I was also listening to Thom Hartmann talk about Congressional power of “Inherent Contempt” which would allow them to actually act as a court and jail people like Miers and Taylor to compel their testimony without involving the winger-infiltrated Justice Department

yeah I would. Good idea.
sangemon @ 70
Although not explicitly a double impeachment, over the years there have been a number of times when a double vacancy has been contemplated, even prior to the Cold War potentials. That’s why there have been at least three Presidential succession acts.
i have to say, i could buy the incrementalism argument, back in the, say, first six months of this year……but there’s not even an argument being made for it anymore.
everyone is just waiting for jan. 2009. as if that will somehow wash away the sins of this administration, and the congress that first enabled it and is now offering potemkin opposition.
if you don’t use the powers of impeachment on this crew, then they will NEVER be used.
Morning all — thank goodness for coffee. Mr. ReddHedd gave me a sleep-in day this morning and, boy, did I need it. :) How is everyone this morning?
Now that is an impressive Sunday morning talking brain group. It’s getting bad when I have to say to myself that Biden is the best out of the line-up.
I’m glad I have something else to do this morning. We’re going noodlin’ on the Red River (two miles away) I won’t be noodlin’ but the sweet thing will be. I’ll take pix. And watch the family do it’s thing. Catfish tonight, breaded in cornmeal, salt, pepper and fried. Served with hot sauce (chili peppers aged in white vinegar). Pan fries, iced tea, soda, Mexican beer. And tomato and cuke salad, from one of the gardens. Homade plum ice cream. And rollie pollies for the kids.
Mad props to Mr. ReddHead.
Well, at LEAST Democrats are ‘nice’ people …
Yes they have to fight back. And it’s not easy for any of us.
Someone the other day (I’m so sorry I cannot remember who, I think it was angryoldbroad) said that this reminds her so much of an abusive marriage/relationship and the remedy is not capitulation but ‘fighting back.’ I totally agree. This is how I have been feeling.
Fighting back has to be with safety and awareness, hence using inherent contempt and NOT contempt thru DoJ.
With every new revelation I feel bullied and battered again. That there’s nothing that we have said or can say that will make a difference. Logic doesn’t count in this fight. TRUTH doesn’t even matter. The enemy lies. All the time. That’s part of their ’strategy.’
The beginning of a way out is realizaing that this is where we are at.
We have to change the battlefield. We cannot let them choose the battle, the landscape, and the weapons.
To end where I began: this is not about being ‘nice’ ~ nice is a weapon chosen by the other side. They choose it because we care about it and they don’t.
Oh, and the war in Afghanistan is going swimmingly too:

So if a double vacancy was envisioned by the founders and later acted upon legislatively by Congress on a number of occaisions then there should be no problem with Pelosi remaining as 3rd in line regardless of her party affiliation in case of a doulbe impeachment.
Why all this Democratic squeamishness about how it will look if a DFH takes over the helm?
Another thing that caught my eye (for eye-rony) is the NYT photo of the presidential contingent at Lady Bird Johnson’s funeral. First is Laura sitting between Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. The veto of the SCHIP re-authorization, if it happens, is one that could be overridden. Taking health insurance away from millions of kids is not, one would assume, something that anyone facing re-election in 2008 would want to run on. Even Orrin Hatch (!) is pissed about this.

Christy Hardin Smith @ 81
Is that REALLY a least bittern, or is it a heron of some sort? Ms. ET and I were cruising slowly through the marsh on our float on Friday evening, and a Common Loon surfaced three feet away, staring at us for about 30 seconds. And I didn’t have a camera. Then a small flock of female Common Goldeneyes landed 20 feet away, and wandered up to us. And I had no camera. Ah, well…
There is an interesting diary on Kos that has a quote from about the public not having the stomach for impeachment. The kicker is, the quote is about Nixon, before he was pushed into resigning. They even mention the argument that makes me see red, that no one wanted Agnew as President. They got rid of Agnew and then they went after Nixon, they forced public opinion in favor of throwing them out. I’m sick of people saying we can’t impeach Bush cause Cheney would be worse than Bush. Anyone who doesn’t get that Cheney is already doing the job of president just hasn’t been paying attention. Get Cheney first, then take down the ventriloquist’s dummy!
Torch and Pitchfork @ 61
I would respectfully submit that continuing your dialogue with Hatch would be very much like wrestling with a pig, i.e., you end up covered with mud and the pig likes it.
So we can only keep calling for Impeachment until there is a huge groundswell they cant ignore.
Now that is something we can do!

It’s nice to see Schuster on in place of Tweety this morning.

Stay away from the WaPo0 today! Their Outlook and Opinion pages are Reich-wing Hacks haven.

Green heron. I recognized it right off. (Beautiful birds. One day a friend and I were out at the local wildlife afre watching birds, and we had a green heron land in front of us – about six feet away – and start fishing. It was doing well, too, caught several minnows while we were there.

Another thing that caught my eye (for eye-rony) is the NYT photo of the presidential contingent at Lady Bird Johnson’s funeral. First is Laura sitting between Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Babs is by herself in the second row, which I found amusing. Neither 41 or 43 attended. And the eulogy was delivered by Bill Moyers, fresh from his Journal case for impeachment episode. Wonder what the thought bubbles were in that photo?”
yeah, that was quite a photo-my thoughts on it-nancy reagan next to rosalyn, quite a story there……..and laura was in the best seat, between two gentlemen, she was safer there than anytime in her life, i bet……….and the look of complete devotion and concern that bill was giving to hillary….his heart was on his face in that photo….
i’m sure it is surreal to be at a first lady’s funeral and you were one…..thinking of all the years left ahead of you, and what will be said at your funeral…….must be totally weird…….
sangemon @ 107
oh! then it’s worth turning it on, thanks!

nevermind, I thought you meant Shuster was hosting The Chris Matthews Show, and I got Tweety on here. bother.
I wanted to add my voice to hoping there will be an FDL breakfakst this time at Yearly Kos. I so wanted to go last year, and the breakfast sounded like it would be so much fun. But I also know it was alot of work for many people.
Since nothing has been said so far, I assume it is not going to happen. With the size of YearlyKos growing by huge numbers this second time, there is probably just too much going on to fit in a breakfast.
But wanted to say it would be great meeting everyone who is there — in one room. We need FDL t-shirts or something to recognize each other.
here’s another take on the reluctance of congress to tackle on the impeachment question.
cheney and his associates, especially rove, have proven themselves exceptionally skilled in all the dark arts of politics.
who’s to say some of those warrantless wiretaps weren’t just the ticket for finding out whatever secrets were needed to make sure enough congressmen and women would sideline themselves from the question of impeachment?
there’s probably a mix of elements as to why congress, especially the dems, show no heart for the fight. i’m just saying this could well be one of them.
Christy Hardin Smith wrote:

The bird is a Green Heron.
the thing about agnew is that, of course, his resignation was generated by an uncompromised department of justice on a case that originated outside the beltway.
it was really a true bit of luck, without which the impeachment process would have been crucially impeded, imo.

Thank goodness someone could identify this bird. I’ve only just started photographing and watching birds and I have a lot to learn.

OOOfah! sorry, I had MSNBC on and got confused there for a moment.
BWA-HAHAHAHAHAH!!! What is this fist-fight going on right now on Press the Meat???
Timmeh must have it for Webb because he is not restraining him against Graham. What a HOOT!!
edit: I should say this is verbal fisticuffs, not literal. I don’t think I have seen such unrestrained arguing on television by Senators…can anybody else think of an example??
Lindy @ 119
That’s how I started off. Took me awhile to get better at identification, though I still need plenty of help.
I used to post all sorts of annoying questions to bird groups asking them for help with birds that now are really obvious to me :)
Now I still post questions to the bird groups, but they’re more often with respect to unusual birds or unusual variations (such as first year fall warbler plumage which is a nightmare).

DMG at 115, my husband and I had a little talk about that very thing at dinner the other evening. We were discussing it for a while and then he looked at me and smiled and said, “Good grief, when did this beome a topic of discussion with no tinfoil overtones?” Wiretapping to get blackmail info on Congressmen and women. It would explain so very much, wouldn’t it?

Guerilla warfare? Why I would never…
yeah I would. Good idea.
Yeah, and since corporations profits are based on consumerism. Protest and Email Nestle you won’t purchase Ice Mountain due to BP’s new state water permit, the refinery — already one of the largest polluters along the Great Lakes — can release 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more sludge into Lake Michigan each day. Ammonia promotes algae blooms that can kill fish, while sludge is full of concentrated heavy metals.
because of BP via Indiana toxic dump of BP oil refinery in Whiting, Ind., Ice Mountain bottled water should be labeled “toxic water with heavy metals and sludge.”

Yes, it was quite a shout fest. Graham droning on and on about Al Quaeda, the success in Al Anbar, not letting congress micromanage the war etc. Webb hit back hard in support of the troops and wouldn’t let Graham off the hook for continuing to support a failed policy. Timmeh, to his credit pushed back against the “AlQuada in Iraq is the number 1 threat meme ” that has been debunked. Graham got very flustered and Webb said “Lindsey’s had a tough month” referring to the many setbacks of the Bush administration.
Yet the fool still carries the leaky water bucket.
Julie Waters @ 123
Or the differences between genders, too, still challenged by those. Had a lively discussion with my nine-year-old last week about some kingfishers living next to our pond; he was certain one was a male, thinking that the bolder markings would surely belong to that gender. Heh. He lost the bet.

Reading Dean’s article in full won’t make you feel any better, but it’ll help answer a lot of your questions. Sure wish Dems would wake up and DO something while they still have a majority!?! If they let this opportunity pass, we’re cooked…. jmho
Oh, apologies. Morning pups. Is my quick look correct, that Webb’s the only bright spot on the telly today? *sigh*

BOYCOTT NESTLE — not just Ice Mountain water products alone. They are taking water from aquifers here in Michigan, making it difficult for well-water users to get the water they need. The water gets shipped out of the Great Lakes’ basin, threatening the ecosystem in this multi-state area.
And water bottles are wasteful and polluting; just open a tap and fill a reusable jug, rather than buying all that plastic that uses petroleum in its manufacture, takes up landfill on disposal when not recycled, and uses even more petroleum to be trucked all over to stores and disposal.
Marretta @ 124
Yes, I think it does explain so very much
snowbird42 @ 105
The operative word is “do.” Do what? What exactly is our next collective step? Because we can (and should) make phone calls, write letters to congress critters and also LTEs and, and, and. But something big and something visual is called for here. What? Where? When? Who?
I can’t. Don’t think I’ve bought a single Nestle product in living memory. But that’s true of most corporate products. As a single woman who lives in NYC, I seldom buy anything that corps make.
You know what I love about Jim Webb? I can see all the justified outrage that I feel written all over his face. This guy knows how to de-spin these maggots. He should start a defense against the dark arts class for Democrats. We all know Cheney is Voldemort. That would make W Wormtail, huh?
Oh he(Webb) also got a crack about LIEverman and his warmongering against Iran!

What’s the benefit, other than sharing giggles at joining the jollygang? I’m not being snarky. I’m serious. I love this place, but the reason for this extra step eludes my dim brain.
Big thanks if anyone would address, please.
Russert quotes Novak’s book on the Plame affair but doesn’t question why Novak has had so many different stories about his interactions with Armitage, etc. And, of course, Russert does not disclose his role.
Oh crap. I hope Marcy is doing her usual thing.
The Prince of Darkness Novakula is talking about the Plame outing with Tim Russert.
Careful parsing going on. And Russert not mentioning his role at all.
I’m going to repeat what I said yesterday about the Liberty Bell. People need a visible symbol and politicians and the media need to see lots of people using that symbol. All the talk we’re hearing about the Founders and their intent that tyranny should be stopped by impeachment should lead us back to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. If we can’t be there in person, we can use all sorts of bells to keep reminding people that we are in the process of losing our liberty.

I’m afraid the progress is way too slow . Our town is owned by the
Repugs. Esp. the paper. Every time someone starts an alternative it is either bought out or run out.
Rayne @ 133
Exactly. I DO feel spoiled, having a well which gives us pure, clean Alaskan water. But when we go travelling, we take our water purifier with, and clean the tap water we have to deal with, rather than buy bottled water. Rayne’s decription helps explain why bottled water costs a lot more than gasoline.
I was reading on some blog last night about Guilliani and the blog owner called him St. Rudy of the Towers. I love it.
is this deja vu or what? I am beginning to think that this is the twilight zone. Perhaps it is just this gut feeling of a disaster lurking ahead that we are running full speed on a dead end road towards.
Maybe just scandal overload. Time to go scrape more wallpaper.

dmg at 118, thanks for the insight on Agnew. I was too young when all that went down to really get what was going on, and because of my age, it kind of fell through the cracks in the way of history. Could you suggest some reading that could smarten me up on the whole Watergate situation? I know people who lived through it are making some interesting comparisons. What I remember from then came through the filter of Republican parents, so everything is pretty suspect.
Adie @ 141
Choice, adie, choice.
You are free to choose to join Facebook, and free to choose what information you will disclose. You also have a right to choose what action you will take if Facebook misuses the information you choose to provide.
You have NO choice right now as to what information you will disclose to the government, however, nor any choice as to how they will use that data, and no choice as to punitive or curative action to take if you don’t like what they are doing. BIG difference, and much of that difference has been realized under this administration; you used to have a choice in this, and legal vehicles for protection, prevention and punitive action.
Been watching Fox with Brit Hume subbing for Chris Wallace, and it’s clear there are two fundamentally different perceptions of reality. Most of the country is fed up with the war and Bush, think Iraq invasion was a mistake and want to get out; the neocons think things are fine and they’re winning.
Brit interviewed Hadley with mostly softballl questions, then grilled Levin with more argument and derision than questions (it was truly insulting, and we needed a Michael Moore moments but didn’t get one from Levin), then pitched softballs to Fred Kagan, so that Kagan and Hadley could make all the Bush/neocon talking points without interruption or challenge.
One scene on the follow up panel told the story. With Hume subbing for Wallance, the panel became Kristol, Mara Liason, Mort Kondrache, Hume and Juan Willams = 3 neocons, 1 reality based guy and one empty head. Fair and Balanced. But after Juan listened to Kristol and Mort describe their view of reality, the camera caught Juan just roll his eyes. Juan then used the line, “who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes.”
Have I mentioned that Brit Hume is the most intellectually dishonest “journalist” on television?
Fresh thread, up and running for everyone…
Has anyone noticed? of the five “political” shows republicans out number democrats two to one with one Iraqi Foreign Minister????
Torch and Pitchfork @ 61
I would respectfully suggest that that was the Mighty AutoPen [machine].
When my daughter worked as a high school intern in then-Senator Edwards office, she was “shocked” to learn of the AutoPen. Both my husband & I worked on the Hill many years ago, so we knew about this. Especially in a Senate office, there are SO many letters that go out, it would be impossible for one human to actually sign them all.
Your tax dollars at work.
And BTW, good on you for writing to Hatch. These nimrod Republicans need to hear from more & more folks who oppose their path.
Scarecrow @ 153
This assumes as your quotation marks show that he is a journalist. Also this is Fox News we are talking about and the only news in it is in its name.
Mornin’ CHS and all you beautiful pups,
Behind in my readin, but just skated up here to thank you for yesterdays post about things we can do to speed things along. Just affixed my Impeach Bush & Cheney NOW sign in my rear window and then superimposed a peace sign on my U.S. flag decal. IANAL so will I get in trouble for defacement. Lurking less and lovin it more.

Corporations only care about the bottom line; profit. We should propel Nestle in the direction of BP, whose actions are damaging a Nestle product with future consequences. Demand that Nestle stop BP from polluting Lake Michigan, the source of “their” (chagrin) bottled water. And the impact upon Nestle in the future, consumer class action lawsuits for knowingly selling a product with cancer causing contaminants; sludge, heavy metals, and ammonia. BP’s dumping with Indiana’s blessing will be paid for by Nestle in the long run.
Just watching Hadley on this weekand I swear he forgot to take the hanger out of his suit jacket. Either that or he’s posing for a Hadley bobble-head doll.
Stephanopoulos has Hadley on. S. doesn’t challenge the interim report. H. gives standard BS that a report he probably had a major hand in creating shows “progress”. Tries to draw distinction between al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq. H. misdirects. S. brings up resurgent al Qaeda report. H. gets to shift his talk to Pakistan but no talk how this represents a failure in Bush policy.
IOW S. challenges one point ineffectually and then lets H. deliver half a dozen talking points unchallenged. I think any of us here could do better than this in our sleep.

i lived through it — indeed, it galvanized me politically. the best account of it? i’m drawing a blank on it here, except maybe for “A Time of Illusion,” by Jonathan Schell.
at the least, that one would be a good place to start.
The House and Sentate need to listen closely to John Dean before they fall into this Rove/Fielding/Bush/Cheney trap.
Emphasis mine “When all is said and done the only way Congress can protect its prerogatives is to undertake its own contempt proceedings. The parliamentary precedents of the House provide such procedures, by which Congress can effectively protect itself….
Unfortunately, however, this machinery has become a bit rusty, for these procedures have not been used since 1934….
Given the clear attitude of conservative presidents, who are doing all within their power to make Congress irrelevant, Congress should turn to these underemployed precedents and put them back to work. The House and Senate Judiciary Committees should take the lead in reviving these procedures, and the Democrats’ leadership should announce that they are embracing them.
If they do not, Fred Fielding has it right: Officials are absolutely immune from compelled Congressional testimony. Bush can simply tell Congress to stop sending subpoenas to his appointees. However, if Congress does engage in a little self-help at this crucial juncture, it can be sure that not only Harriet Miers, but also George Bush, will be forced to pay attention to congressional subpoenas – for the bottom line is that Congress will not need the cooperation of the other branches to enable it to conduct proper oversight.”
The most important sentence for me, from John Dean was: “for the bottom line is that Congress will not need the cooperation of the other branches to enable it to conduct proper oversight.”
The courts are already stacked. Congress should avoid them any was possible. Dean is showing them the way, and they need to take it!!!

Tim Russert’s extended homage this morning to Bob Novak and his new book was one of his most nauseating performances to date. And he’s been on a roll.
Timmeh long ago gave up the news room for the Vineyard’s beaches and bars. But to fawn over Novak within weeks of the commutation of Libby’s sentence, as if howling over the carcass of Libby’s sentence like a pack of wolves at the end of a hunt, was breathtakingly Londonesque in its naked celebration of power and those who protect it from accountability.
The issue is not Tim Russert and the thirty pieces of silver he accepted for turning traitor to his profession. It is who pays him, and who keeps paying him and promoting him. Those are the people, like Cheney, who need to be dragged into the sunshine of publicity and public judgment.
Least bittern? Green heron? Maybe, but please permit me to add Virginia rail to the list of candidates.
Oddly, the photographs in this listing show a bird of widely variable appearance. It seems to be the drawings/paintings in the collection that most resemble Lindy’s shot.
For what it’s worth, some years ago I happened to find a dead bird (on a city street — no idea how it got there) that turned out to be a Virginia Rail. The markings that I noticed turned out to agree perfectly with the bird guide picture and description. When I saw the pic on this post, the first thing I thought was, “Another Virginia rail?!”
Disclaimer: I’m not so well acquainted with least bitterns and green herons.
When I “preview,” I find that the “this listing” link above is getting truncated so that it only leads to a list of Google images for “Virginia”. I’m going to tinker with it before posting but in case it still doesn’t work, what I actually searched Google Images for was, of course, “Virginia rail”.
MImi @ 155
And once again, nary a woman anywhere (as a guest). I can no longer watch these shows.
The bird in the photo appears to be a green heron not a least bitern. IMPEACHMENT IS A MUST!!!
