For a while now, I’ve been doing Saturday Late Nite posts, but after tonight, I’m delighted to announce that our good friend Thersites will be taking over the Saturday Late Nite slot. I expect this slot to be far more entertaining than I have been able to make it, now that it will be in such capable new hands!
Now, don’t misunderstand: I’m not leaving FDL, and I’m not going to stop writing. I will still pinch hit as needed or whine at Jane to give me a weekday slot when I get a wild hair urging me to post about a specific topic. But I won’t have any set place in the weekly rotation anymore.
That’s a good thing. No doubt, some of you are relieved! But for those of you who actually like my work, I can only say that my evolving, changing role at Firedoglake is good news all around.
Of late, I’ve been focusing more on the back end, behind the scenes strategic infrastructure development that will make this site sustainable and successful over the long haul. Jane and I both have been working closely on that, and it’s an area where I feel as if my professional and life experiences prepare me fairly well to make a good contribution. We all want to be sure FDL is here a year from now and even five years from now to continue to promote change in our country, and that’s where I’m going to be able to concentrate, more and more.
As I say, I won’t stop writing about immigration, corrupt Republicans, sold out Democrats or whatever the hell gets my juices flowing as the months continue to pass. But our readers – all of you – have given so much of your time, passion and energy to make this place work for so long, I feel the need to focus myself to be sure we can keep it here for you over the long haul.
Expect exciting new things to come from this, as Jane and I spend literally hours each week working together to create new things for FDL for the long haul, helping to reward and keep the great talent we have contributing to this operation now, and attracting or developing even more outstanding talent for the (progressive!) future.
Anyway, let’s take a little time to chat about where FDL fits in our lives, what it mean to us, and what have been our favorite posts. Has anything you read here risen to such importance as to have made a landmark impression on your life? I know this place has change my life immeasurably.
Let’s kick this around in the comments tonight. Don’t forget to give Thersites a big FDL welcome, in case he pops in, too!

Oh, Mitch, you slay me.
No Zed ):
Damn, and I missed it by a bit more than THAT much!
PACH!
:(
Shorter Bill Kristol: I’m on crack.
Who is that strange band?
More Abba, please.
Congrats and/or see you soon in a surprise performance Pach.
Pach! *sniff*
Thersites!
Welcome Thersites!
Pach, are you considering having a way to know who is logged on? Maybe giving people the option of remaining invisible?
I think this is still my favorite all time piece of FDL writing.
allan_in_upstate @ 8
William the Bloody,
is there no way to shut him up?
Evening all. Hello/Good-bye, Pach. I am going to miss our Saturday nights, but look forward to what you will be offering us in the future.
Pachacutec @ 14
Amen! And where is Benny boy these days?
Right On, Pach!!!
I haven’t been to Late Night in quite a while. Now with extra Beatles!

cleter @ 21
whose?
Ok, so I delurked downstairs, and with glass of vino in hand, I am still chatting with this group tonight. Pach, you are one of the reasons I lurk around here so much. Great insight. Great writing. As I mentioned below I am waiting for our funds to get more secure so I can send some decent cash your way (have delusions of winning the lottery and underwriting you all, but my kids won’t let me really play). I’ve been diligently reading blogs since January 2003. Yes, for more than four years. The work done here is crucial for our democracy. I really believe that. So yes, FDL has changed my life because I think it has had an impact on the country.
Pach, I’m going to miss spending my Saturday nights with you.
I look forward to Thers’ posts but I will still miss yours.
What? No more Pach Saturdays? No one tells me anything!
“Fly little wingnut, fly”
Those were the days, when the WaPo deviltry commanded the attention of the FDL A-team, and had not been delegated to us lowly newbies.
Pach: I was thinking that the Aw Shucks Brady was my favorite too. I always enjoyed your posts and look forward to hearing more from you.
belle1 @ 25
Go Belle1, Cheers!!
Let me add my voice saying welcome to the Lake, belle1. It has been my experience that once delurked, it is impossible to go back to lurking.
TeddySanFran @ 28
Oh, don’t be silly.
a. You have always been an A-lister around here, Teddy.
b. You are our WaPo expert and always have been.
OK, I’ll testify…
I found FDL through a post by a mysterious “susan43″ at the courttv libby thread. She spoke truth so I followed her. She led me here. I do not know susan43 by her fdl handle. But I know she exists. And I thank her, whoever she is.
You may think I am a bit of a wanker for watching crap like court tv but there it is. I believe in rule of law and do so thoroughly enjoy watching bigger wankers than myself take a fall. I apologize. I’m in schadenfreude rehab.
Now I’m an oversight junkie.
I look forward to spending Saturday evening with Thers and the gang, but your thoughtful and outraged posts have meant a lot, Pach. I hope you’ll pop up randomly often.
TRex! Howdy!
how impt is FDL?
I can not even begin to answer….think hope and sighs of relief and fastest response/best clarifier, most serving, ethical and professional and snarky…and the unbelieveably best mods(nicest blog to read anywhere) and the recipies and the birds and the love.
Thanks for doing what you are doing~and that goes to all really.
Pachacutec @ 14
Actually, this is my favorite.
belle1 @ 25
Welcome above ground Belle.
(*blushing*)
Pach, I’m happy/sad. I’ll miss you/but look forward to your occasional post. I want FDL to make money so we can go forward big time.
Please don’t forget your subjects, ah, American ***CITIZENS***. (Subjects vs. Citizens)
Let’s give a big shout-out to our Canadian and Australian friends too. We love you Petrocelli, Persiflage, and PeteDownUnder. Who have I forgotten?
Also, if there are people from other countries lurking, please speak up!
Loo Hoo. @ 39
We’re in Texas!
cleter @ 35
Evening! Gosh, in the last two days I’ve ’seen’ you and Zennurse and Mrs. K8. It’s like Old Home Week around here!
I can’t begin to tell you all here at FDL how important this site is to me. After the 2004 fiasco, I had an appt. with my doctor. The form for an annual exam included a box: “what life changes have affected you this year: divorce, death of a parent/sibling/spouse” and on and on with a final box, “other.” I filled the box with the words: “election depression” and when she came in we cried, and laughed. But I was very, very serious. And discovering FDL was the cure I needed. Thank you so very much.
Chris
Suzanne @ 31
Yep. Late night is definitely addictive.
TRex @ 42
I’ve been doing dissertation fieldwork this summer, with sporadic access to the internets.
I’m not sure I could pick a favorite post. Damn. There’s too many.
I wish, it can’t get no worse:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MhjkaytFgQ
Not just Lake Nite, Dr (pause) Dick, all of FDL is highly addictive. Too bad more of our countrymen are not also addicted to the Lake.
TeddySanFran @ 34
I would like to second that. I enjoy the normal late night snark delivered by TRex and TSF, but your posts are always worthwhile and thought provoking.
True confessions of an obsessive. I read FDL first thing in the morning, and the last thing at night. Now reality is I have a virtual marriage (too long to explain) so being online is just a part of my life, but indeed, FDL is a part of what I do now.
It is actually way better than the newspaper.
allan_in_upstate @ 37
Here’s a Pachacutec classic.
TeddySF- the Psychedelic Furs are playing in SF tomorrow night.
You coming?
How’s everyone doing?
I am sitting outside the club in San Diego using the bus’ wireless internet.
I remember the olden times when 50 comments was a lot.
I believe this was the first place where I used the “f” word in comments.
do-si-do @ 32
Oh no. It’s not time for rehab yet. Not by a long shot.
Pach, Does this mean you will dive into the comments a bit more often? Will miss your posts and enjoyed many a late nite discussions.. thanks for everything you’ve inspired and accomplished thus far..)
Roots Project!
*Welcome Thers*
DrDick @ 44
I am completely addicted.
allan_in_upstate @ 37
oh Alan~that WAS a terrific post~and the pictures~I love the snarky pictures. and the wit. And the knowledge. And the passion.
well, you get the drift
Hey Thers!
Pach, I love your posts. And I love that you don’t give me nightmares (unlike dakin01 and TRex).
Hope you pop in often.
Fave:
Hi gang, I’m back. I am still fuming over all the truths Ian wrote about earlier. I will be jumping back and forth between comments and installing my new orchid encyclopedia. I tore up my desk and bookshelves looking for the disk. Of course it was sitting right in front of me. Now I have a mess to clean up. I think I will just run out the clock and wait for 2009 to come around . . .
cleter @ 52
Yeah, me too, cleter. Remember when it was just Jane posting? I remember when TRex was handed the keys to the blog when everyone was at YKOS.
Is this testimonial nite? The twelve step program to progressive ideology? When I was working full time, I never had time for politics other than a contribution to the local Dem Congressman, Planned Parenthood and ACLU. FDL was the second or third political blog that I found. It was Jane. Redd was a commenter and there were not that many comments.
Jane really woke me up to how much trouble this country was in. I think the rapid expansion of this site and the exponential growth of primary posters and the growth of the comment section is validation of Jane’s vision. She sure change my vision. BTW “Sandpaper Snatch” may have been over the line, even for Jane.
Boy, Pach, you sure know how to pick the questions! I don’t know exactly how to qualify or quantify FDL’s impact — except that I read it first and most often above all other media and blogs.
Should let Jane and Christy know that I have a potential opportunity for a series of posts; I wouldn’t have dreamed of bringing this up before at other sites. Maybe that’s one of the things I can quantify, that FDL opens a whole new vista of opportunity, from more and better content, to more and better relationships. I’ve communicated more one-on-one with FDL community members just since we all started using Facebook, than I have the entire couple of years I’ve been following FDL. There’s always something new and groundbreaking just around the corner, and that’s saying a lot for somebody who’s generally the earliest adopter among her closest peeps.
Suzanne @ 61
What a glorious day that was!
I remember the magical day the word “fuckery” was unleashed on the sleeping internets.
I wish, it can’t get no worse:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MhjkaytFgQSuzanne @ 61
This blog is the ultimate T-Bird.
This is very timely for me. I have been in New England for a week. I spent three and a half days at a conference in Boston and three and a half days in Maine and New Hampshire. I am much more of a day and evening participant in FDL and the past week gave me a chance to get away and reflect on what this site has become to me. I attended a conference related to online education and something a presenter said really drove home a point about this whole blogging deal is to me. We were discussing social interaction and online education and this fellow said that “the internet” is like alcohol. It has a tendency to bring emphasize whoever you already are. If you are quiet and withdrawn it can make it easier for you to be that. If you are highly social the same can hold true. I am at a point in my life where hanging around in bars and arguing politics has little appeal so I am able to be active here on the Lake instead. A week away from home and FDL was great, it made me appreciate both.
TeddySanFran @ 59
I voted with at least 3 browsers that night :-).
I’m not sure my backstage activities will bring me more often to the comments, but I promise I’ll try.
Still, the stuff I’ll be doing will, I think, bring a next evolutionary step to this community. So I hope. But you all can keep us on track, and trust me, you’ve not heard the last of me (for good or ill!).
Pachacutec @ 68
I smell ROOTS!! ;-)
cleter @ 52
Fimpeachment?
;>)
*xyz @ 50
All of that math reminded me of this Richard Cohen oldy and moldy.
Pachacutec @ 68
We will hold you to that Pach. You don’t want a horde of angry Fire Dogs storming your Andean palace.
By the way, I was riding in the tour bus from Long Beach to San Diego, and I saw one of the Freeway Blogger’s “IMPEACH” signs.
Made me feel like a part of something.
patrick @ 73
woohoo! ain’t that a grand feeling, patrick. i love finding those signs.
patrick @ 73
Oh! I hope you sent an email telling FB this! I love these signs.
raven @ 66
“We were discussing social interaction and online education and this fellow said that “the internet” is like alcohol.”
??????????
Well, after all, I was just a commenter who got drafted when Jane and Christy were exhausted. The standards have gotten higher since that desperate grab. Look at the talent we have here now!
Thats what I want to work to sustain. But I’ll try to comment more, even though I’m sick busy.
patrick @ 51
Wow, I would love to, but I have this blog-commitment thing tomorrow nite. Where are you playing in SF?
raven @ 66
You should have asked a Mainer! Either stay in Maine, or skip NH and go straight to Vermont!
Since someone mentioned the Freeway Blogger, I’ve been meaning to ask..does anyone here beside me participate in the Whispering Campaign?
http://psstpsstpsst.blogspot.com/
I think the people at Home Depot, Lowes, the garden center and the public library are starting to catch on….
Taking a trip next week, any suggestions as to what (short) articles I can leave at all the restaurants and rest areas?
TeddySanFran @ 78
A place called the Mezzanine. Heard of it? Never been there myself.
Well, chances are we’ll be back…
Not sure if it’s a guilty pleasure or an obsession, or what, but I’m doing Sesame Street nostalgia tonight.
BTW, TSF, I meant to email you: I hear WaPo is having an NLRB hearing on a labor issue coming up.
Sounds like a job for TSF to cover, no?
patrick @ 81
Mezzanine is very cool.
LS @ 77
Yea, we were talking about how to best use the “discussion” function in course management systems (or learning management systems) to promote student to student and student to teacher interaction. It was a metaphor that he thought might help folks realize different approaches were important in that endeavor. Also, I got up a 5am, drove from Portland Maine up the Kancamagus Highway. Went to the top of of a mountain (on a ski lift) hiked around, drove to Boston, waited 3 hours for a flight and then drove an 1 1/2 hours back to Athens so I goofier than usual.
GordonM @ 80
I would have if it had been on the way to Logan! I didn’t have much time.
belle1 @ 49
Belle, I’m delurking this weekend, too. It was the post about racism that made me “come out”.
I’ve been reading FDL for at least 2 years. It has totally changed my life b/c it was here at FDL that I realized I wasn’t alone. My watershed moment was Katrina and I sat in disbelief in front of my computer looking at those images.
When I found The Lake and read all the amazing posts by Jane, Christy and Co.; as well as all the comments. I was hooked. I’ve been lurking ever since.
Oh, and Belle, I just moved to the Bay Area from L.A., what a CRAZY town!
Thanks, FDL.
Pachacutec,
Thanks for your wisdom and most of all for the Live blogging. Folks may not realize it, but what I read here influences my work. I perform in front of thousands of people every week, and I can convey the caring and compassion of this space to them with simple changes in tone and vocal inflection.
I too will be slowly stepping back from the blogs, because I’m experimenting with technologies that will redefine human understanding of the nature of consciousness itself.
Forgive the Star Trek analogy, but if we are to defeat the Borg, we need to become Q. How far do you really think we are from the hostile detonation of a nukular weapon? A few more subpoenas perhaps? A Persian Gulf of Tonkin?
We now have the technology necessary for the global evolution of the human species to Son of Man. (homo infinitis) Forgive me if it’s gonna take a street musician to present it to you, but I’ve been working on this since 1973.
No one ever said that altering the course of Civilization would be easy, but I’ll try to make it as much fun as possible.
May the Love that Knows no Comprehension find refuge in your hearts and in your homes forever.
Namaste,
David
OT, but I find this article by John Dean very disturbing. I really am afraid that the Bush cabal are pushing for a dictatorship here.
Tross @ 87
Welcome Tross. Glad to meet you.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore ended his long-shot campaign for presidency on Saturday, acknowledging he couldn’t raise enough money.
I think I forgot to thank you Pachacutec.
Nice to have your voice here, Tross. From where in the Bay Area? Santa Cruz mts here.
Rayne @ 63
Rayne! You have been a heroin of mine for a long ‘ol time. Will you be posting front page>
I want to jump in on the “where this site fits in my life” thing I mentioned in the main post.
This community has become my passion. Yes, I work, and yes, my family comes first, but this place is my extended family.
I learn so much here, and I gain so much from everyone’s passion and insight.
Jane, Christy, TRex and the whole gang are close friends to me. Marcy, the whole crew. These kinds of relationships have changed my life. It’s amazing to be part of such a crew of people with such energy, intelligence, wit and values. I’m leaving too many names out, but it’s everyone. Commenters included. Most especially commenters and our many great writers. Where to start? So many names.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that. What we do is bigger than any of us, and that’s something I always feel privileged to feel somehow a part of.
belle1 @ 49
Have stopped watching all major network TV news and Jim Lehrer – all this sleep inducing bull – after I came across this site a few months ago. Now I could not if I wanted to.
raven @ 85
i read ““the internet” is like alcohol” as
““the internet” is like school”.
only when i read your emphasis did i realize.
i liked ‘the internet is like school’ better.
school is like alcohol … …
NOT!
not much?
I
have

the
wall
peas ya’ll
Happy delurk Tross!!
g’nite raven – sleep well
raven @ 98
Night Raven. Rest well and visualize whirled peas.
Suzanne @ 93
Berkeley, here. What a great town. I’m originally from NYC so L.A. was a shock. It feels really good to be in an intellectual town again.
But Tross…..LA has such city charms….
DrDick @ 89
John Dean must be rather shocked at this Miers refusal. After all, even Nixon didn’t try to keep him from testifying. If Bush wins this (which he may, as Dean points out, with his newly crafted SCOTUS) the Presidency is forever changed. The President will be able to decline subpoenas from Congress: simply say, “no thank you.”
I’m not sure most Americans understand how big a deal this is, although Dean surely does. He makes a strong case for inherent (non-Executive-enforced) contempt for just this reason. The Legislature can no longer rely upon the Judiciary to enforce its will on the Executive; the Legislature must act alone, as it has not since 1934. Rusty tools must be sharpened for new use, labeled “traditional” as Dean does, and put to work. Tomorrow.
I must again marvel that I find myself admiringly quoting John Dean. If you’d told me thirty five years ago that would happen, I would laugh in your face. But there you go.
belle1 @ 103
I’m trained as a lawyer, but was an entrepreneur in L.A. In the nightlife industry. Way too close to the craziness that is L.A. I was in the business in NYC, too, but there’s a special kind of crazy going on in Hollywood nighlife.
I rarely delurk here but this is one of the 3 blogs I check every time I hop online. The quality of the posts AND comments here is amazing, and of course this is THE place to be when there’s a hearing.
And I know and love Thers from elsewhere; he’s one o’ my very favorite scribblers on the intertubes and will make a fine addition to the lineup. Cheers!
Since belle1 and Tross have blazed an easily marked path for delurking, if anyone else is out there waiting for a good time, this is a great time.
If you don’t speak, we won’t know what FDL means to you and where FDL fits within your life.
hey Silleigh, and welcome Tross!
TeddySanFran @ 104
I agonized for days before I could check Worse Than Watergate out of the library. No regrets.
My favorite part of the Lake is the supportive community here. I learn as much in the comments as I do in the wonderful posts and don’t have to worry about getting flamed when I do comment. Nothing shuts a lurker down faster than getting flamed when they finally post. That doesn’t happen here. I love the diverse backgrounds of everyone here and think of the lake as my oasis in the midst of the insanity raging all around.
Tross @ 87
Tross, may I share your story from earlier? Late Night is a largely new crowd.
TeddySanFran @ 104
Or Bruce Fein, particularly, with his fine performance on Bill Moyer’s last nite!!!
TeddySanFran @ 108
Thanks, again, FDL. You guys/gals are awesome. Like meeting a bunch of new friends. I’ll say hi again soon. Good night.
TeddySanFran @ 104
This is precisely the reason that impeachment needs to be on the table. If we start with Gonzales, it makes a lot of what Bushco is doing more difficult bc they are relying on a DOJ legal interp giving Miers et al privilege. We need to keep up the pressure.
Loo Hoo. @ 111
Ok, now I am getting really brave.
So if Bush actually wins this, and the administrative branch of our government gets stronger, then I can only hear the screeching of the Repubs when the new Democratic president goes by the new rules.
Given the disgust of this President that I am hearing from the folks who are generally in the middle, I have more faith that the folks out there are getting it.
May be foolish, but it helps me sleep at night.
TeddySanFran @ 104
I agree entirely with your assessment of the political situation, as well as regarding John Dean. I would probably spit in your face 30 years ago, but then Nixon drafted my ass in ‘71.
Pachacutec @ 95
You’re making me cry. Best luck with the behind the scenes work, Pach. We love you.
Tross @ 115
Sure, I just tried to post, but something happened. ?
Anyway, Loo Hoo, that’s why I shared, so we all could learn from it.
Thanks.
OT – Gonzales is just begging to be impeached
Link fixed by Mod.
Fein’s a little soon for forgiveness, but yes, I am impressed at the stand he’s taken.
Let me add that I’d like to hear from our co-voyagers, also — those who read, but have not yet shared. You do realize: we were all like you once? I remember revising my very first comment over and over again, trying to get it exactly right (we didn’t have Preview then). I’m pretty sure I was EPUd.
Anyway, please join tonite’s chat and tell us why you love FDL — you already know why we do!
THe link seems to be broken – here it is:

Lea-no uh @ 110
Really, that is what I love here. Every poster is smart, KIND, and savy. What’s not to love?
Chris
TeddySanFran @ 104
I think John Dean is right. Roberts gave the WH the word that they are covered and to precipitate a court test of Presidential power.
I think Dean is wrong in thinking that Scalia will stick with his opinion in Young v. US. Precedent means nothing to the gang of five. I think the most ominous thing that has happened in the past few years is Justice Kennedy’s vote to over turn Brown. The Dems may be right in delaying a confrontation..knowing SCOTUS will rule 5-4 for Dictatorship.
Loo Hoo. @ 40
‘Nuther Canadian here. Since you asked.
Favorite post? Oh my. I think this little story will have to explain why FDL has become so important to me.
My beloved dad died at the end of February. He and his parents (who lived across the garden on the farm) were life-long passionate New Deal Dems. He spent the last few years of his life in a nursing home, hemiplegic. He was more despairing of what was happening to our country than of his own condition. When I discovered FDL early last summer, on each visit to Dad (usually accompanied by Mom) I would give them little summaries of the great posts and news on FDL since I had last seen them. And last fall was wonderful. Thanks to all the wonderful interviews with progressive candidates on Saturdays my dad began to brighten. He and my mom would relay word of all the wonderful progressives to all their friends…the ripples from the lake spread far indeed.
Lea-no uh @ 110
Isn’t the Lake Grand?!! A word to all lurkers, please comment, the Lake consists of everyone’s contributions, oral and fiscal!!! *g* I’m stepping away to show my better half Bill Moyer’s superlative Journal from last nite!!! I love DVR!!!
Pachacutec @ 95
i (we) feel privileged
and grateful
to somehow be a part of fdl.
and to get to know you Lord Pachacutec.
i will miss your writings on Saturday nights.
are there good Incan prayers we may pray for you?
Perhaps one of your poems?
from your “The Sacred Hymns of the Situa“?
we take comfort that you will not be far away.
Welcome new delurkers. A lot of time I am in lurk mode, too, but other times I join in the fray. Right now I am about to toddle off to bed. Mr. Gnome (as the other Central TX Firepups call him) is in Houston tonight, so I get the bed all to myself. Well, maybe not all to myself. My little puppies will want to join me. They just got back from the Bed and Biscuit this morning, so we have not had our cuddles yet.
TeddySanFran @ 104
What did you two think of the Bill Moyer’s impeachment discussion?
*xyz @ 120
OMG this makes me livid. I hope, fingers crossed and all, that Leahy is building a case that he is waiting to bring later.
Well, a girl can dream anyway
Steve-AR @ 124
I’ll inject a smidgen of doubt, in that most of these haven’t really been 5-4; they’re (4 and 1) to 4. Kennedy has filed separate reasoning while agreeing with the conclusion. It’s not an ideologically unified majority. Yeah, that’s a pretty slim reason for hope; but still….
Gnome de Plume @ 130
Mr. Gnome was just so much better than M. de Plume.
TeddySanFran @ 121
newspaperbrat @ 129
I didn’t see that, unfortunately (I do not watch a lot of TV), but everything I have heard and read about it sounds right on. I think we absolutely need to impeach this bunch in order to preserve the republic.
Night Gnome. Enjoy those puppy cuddles.

I have already written to Pelosi to instruct her that she cannot take sections of the Constitution “off the table.” Hope she gets the message and soon; she won’t be viewed well by history if she lets this monarchical crew get away with this.

Best Moyers EVAH!
Howdy y’all! I just finished my second “pentagon sucks” post in two days.

Here you go:
http://thenexthurrah.typepad.c…..sight.html
This is the story our new friend, Tross, had to say today:
Tross says:
July 14th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
I was recently looking for an apartment in Berkeley. I was on the phone w/the lease agent who I had spoken to several times, but had never met. This was the first day this unit was being shown and she was literally directing me to the building b/c it wasn’t easy to find.
Another agent from the same office was waiting at the building to show the unit and she couldn’t have known that I was talking to someone from her office on my cell phone.
When I finally arrived, the other agent was just leaving the unit. She asked if she could help me and I explained that I wanted to see the unit for rent. She said, “it’s already rented”, and closed the door and walked to her car. I asked her how it could be rented so quickly, since it had literally been showing for 10 minutes. She repeated, “it’s rented”, started her car and began to drive away. The agent on the phone was yelling at me on the phone to tell the other agent that the unit WAS NOT rented.
I tried to tell the agent that I was on the phone with her co-worker who was assuring me the unit was available, but she just drove off.
The woman on the phone was very confused and apologetic. She said she couldn’t understand what just happened. I couldn’t bring myself to explain to the woman who had been so nice and encouraging on the phone that I knew quite well what had just happened. I’m a black man and , unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.

Luckily for us, Tross is an attorney and is going to follow up on this and report back to us. Another friend to welcome to FDL!
Loo Hoo. @ 40
Aww, you’re such a sweetie Loo Hoo! Don’t forget Debbie(aussie) and Downundergirl who drop in often. FDL is such a welcoming place: an oasis of intelligence, brilliant snark, and a community of wise, warm and wonderful commenters that it feels like home.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 126
Wow.
Where else can you go and have Ricky Lee Jones respond to something you’ve said while you’re cooking dinner at the same time? Amb. Joe Wilson engage in a conversation with you in between changing your kids’ diapers? Have John Dean answer a question that’s been nagging you while you’re literally bouncing a baby to sleep?
These have all happened to me here in the FDL comments. Then there’s the obvious education you get here which has basically eliminated any Conglomerate Media sources in our house. Feel free to make a donation!
BTW Pach, your wrap-up about Fitz on the day the Scoots verdict came in (I think) could be one of my all-time favorite moments online (no time to find the link..). After years of build up for that one day, you captured it all so effectively. Wonderful! Looking forward to seeing where this all goes…
Pachacutec @ 149
Cool. I tell my friends stuff I read on here all the time.
Ah, you mean this one from closing arguments day?
For some reason, the pic link seems broken, but this one just wrote itself.
TeddySanFran @ 139
Madame Speaker is smart and holding up well all things considered and I hope/trust she is spending more time with Murtha than Steney these days. My optimism went up last week when Rep. Sam Farr signed on to Rep. Kucinich’s Impeach Cheney campaign. Sam and Nancy are old dear friends. They are veterans of Washington politics and tried and true progressives.
Another Pach classic: “Libby Trial: Who’s Your Daddy?“
The live blogging of the Libby trial was my first exposure to the Lake, and I have been hooked ever sense.
I’ll speak up again – getting braver! I haven’t been so wrapped up in my computer since the early days of Silicon Investor. That was fun – smart people posting and new gains in my tech portfolio every day. Then the Bush crash, now the Bush disaster. This place gives me hope because I know there are intelligent people looking for solutions. Now if we can only get the message to congress. Thanks to FDL from my heart.
Karen
Pach, thanks for all your contributions to Firedog Lake and especially for your insightful writing. Don’t be a stranger.
And please allow me to second TeddySanFran’s comment: “This is precisely the reason that impeachment needs to be on the table. If we start with Gonzales, it makes a lot of what Bushco is doing more difficult bc they are relying on a DOJ legal interp giving Miers et al privilege. We need to keep up the pressure.”
janda @ 155
I have been hooked since the very first day that I came.
Pachacutec @ 152
Fitz!
Oops! ; )
Hey, y’all!
Jukesgrrl @ 156
That was janda’s comment, appended to mine. ;)
Karen @ 157
See, that wasn’t so hard, Karen. Welcome :)
Hey everybody.
I enjoy several aspects of FDL:
* The shared resources of Political Info.
* The live-blogging of hearings and chat re.
* The call to action, reaching out to share our concerns.
* The virtual community of friends…
To wit…I’ve spent most of the last several days at the hospital with my sisters and mom with our Dad, who is listed, basically, as having multiple organ failure. It’s been challenging and it ain’t over yet.
But, Here Is My Thank You to my FDL friends who wished us blessings and lifted us up. Much appreciated.
(and, while I was out at RadioShack today to get a CD player for his hospital room, the transmission on my car died. Like someone here said earlier this week, Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.)
hiya Karen
Karen @ 157
That is why they give us all the congress phone numbers all the time.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 126
Wow (nod to Pach) and then some. But this makes sense to me. There is so much heart combined with brains here . Of course this place is a lifeline. That is a good part of why we are all here. Better than bitchin’ about the world alone.
((((demi))))
demi: my best to your dad and your whole family.
Fern! Always assumed you were American for some reason. See how things go? Nice to shake hands across the border.
Any Mexican FDLers?
Pachacutec @ 167
my best also.
Pachacutec @ 152
Oh yea, that’s it man! Brings chills to this day….”You know the name.”
It’s like a great novel. Best of luck with your future endeavors.
Demi: My heart goes out to you and your family.
newspaperbrat @ 153
I meant to include genuine patriots as well.
Gnome de Plume @ 129
Well, tell us about the new puppies! Are they Firepups?
Welcome, Thersites – looking forward to your posts.
Pach – your work at FDL has been solid and inspiring – thanks for that – keep up the good work!
Thanks you guys.
The folks at the hospital are true angels.
I’m going to pick up a huge box of See’s Candies tomorrow for them.
And, as some of you know, I’m a Lay Speaker at the church I attend, and guess who is scheduled for tomorrow? That would be ME!
But, it’s all good.
demi @ 175
This experience could be an inspiration for a great sermon.
best wishes to demi and family

The message is about how we treat each other.
We will be singing “Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit Divine.”
I probably won’t make it through the service without tears, but they are my friends too, so it will be alright.
demi @ 179
I think the nasty christo-stupids who were screaming at the senate need to go to your church instead.
demi @ 179
Sounds wonderful. I think it is important to have places where we can share our pain as well as our joy. I know that helped me get through it when I lost each of my parents.
Has anyone mentioned the mods? If there is any one thing that makes this site special it is the moderation of the comments. This is the only site where I can read 300 comments. Most sites if I can make 10 it is special. I don’t know how they do it, but it makes FDL unique (using the Latin definition and not the popular useage of “very unique”)
SnarKassandra @ 180
Amen, Sister Cassie, Amen.
Yeay MODS!!!!!!!!
Pach! (boo-hoo)
Thers! (woo-hoo)
I got here via smirkingchimp for the Plamegate coverage. That was when 35 comments was a monster thread and Christy was still reddhedd. Took me a long time to come out but I’m glad I did. So don’t be shy all you lurkers out there, jump on in, the water’s fine. As someone said above… a lifeline.
I’m in an area where the only 2 people I know who are like-minded politically are a nurse and someone who found me via a comment I left at dKos.
At least they’re the only ones vocal about it.
This place has been such a Godsend. Thank you all!
demi @ 162
Hey, Sweet Demi. I knew your Dad was is rough shape, but this gets really hard, I’m sure. I’m with you, hon.
Not to be disrespectful to you in any way, but organ failure has a whole new meaning these days, unfortunately.
Steve-AR @ 182
Abso-fucking-lutely.
You’re sweet, Cassie. If you’re ever in LA…
Margot @ 186
Did you try a bumper sticker? Someone commented at the grocery store the other day that they like our bumper stickers. :)

On behalf of The Mod Squad and the rest of the backstage crew, thank you.
Cinderella is turning into a pumpkin in 30 seconds, agh! Oh no! See you tomorrow.
Loo Hoo – Thanks and Ha!
Also, regarding Hello, Goodbye, a friend of the family delivered a baby girl in the same hospital the first night we were there.
Hello, Goodbye.
Her name is Sage. And she’s perfectly beautiful.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

demi,
((Many hugs))
180 comments and I can’t believe no-one has said it yet: “I don’t think this is an appropriate topic for this blog.”
SnarKassandra @ 193
See you tomorrow. Sleep well and I hope you get over that ugly orange flush.
Felix Moronia @ 197
Hah!
What, is it too gay again?
newdealfarmgrrrll
I’m so sorry for your loss.
We move on and never forget.
Steve-AR @ 182
Yes, I agree. *graceful bow and swoosh of plumed hat* huzzah for the mods and the whole backstage crew!
Felix Moronia @ 197
As long as it is about caring and sharing and a commitment to our communities (local, national, and international), I do not think that there are any topics which are not appropriate for this blog. That is one of the things I really enjoy about the Lake.
FDL woke me up after a two year slumber. I got out of the bed, got dressed and have been kicking some major health care insurance industry butt. I am finally doing what I was meant to do. Rabble Rousing. I have been taking lessons from the great and mighty. Thanks.
demi @ 194
That’s so “cosmic”!
Let me know when you’re ready, and it will be my turn to drive up to see you.
I love my dad so much, I just hate the thought of this for you…
Pachacutec @ 199
Oh, honey! The Nurse taking care of my dad is So Fabulous! If you’re ever in LA…. his name is Randy, he’s beautiful and from Spain.
Suzanne @ 192
You are welcome Suzanne. What I said isn’t some expression of warm and fuzzy BS but an admiration of what you people can do.
Heh. I’m taken.

Felix Moronia @ 197
You’re entirely correct.
Pach, I don’t think this is an appropriate topic for this blog.
SnarKassandra,
No, what a good idea, though!
I found out about the nurse because we were both wearing Kerry buttons when she took my BP. We both were relieved to see another Kerry voter.
I have a W sticker on my rattiest old trash barrel. My next-door neighbors laughed at it and said they don’t like Bush much, but they aren’t voters. That’s for other people.
(Puts head in hands.)
Joe Lieberman is up to something.
P
Good for you.
I think so is he. Gold band on right hand.
Felix Moronia @ 197
**
Was someone complaining about at topic in this blog? I musta missed it.
Seems I always arrive after the whine has been served…
Pach is going to have explain why “this is not an appropriate topic for this blog” for those who don’t know that story.
I started coming to the Lake frequently during Marcy’s liveblogging of Scooter’s trial — it’s definitely addictive. I don’t comment often, but it’s on my ever-growing list of sites I check everyday. I spend a lot of time at DU, which is where I first got involved after the 2004 (s)election. I’m always impressed by the intelligence of the posters here, although somewhat humbled as well. There are so many really, really smart, knowledgeable people here and the posts are always a learning experience. I just wish I didn’t have to work full time and could spend all of my time on the toobz. I’m really looking forward to meeting some of you in the flesh at YearlyKos.
Forgot to mention this is the first place I go whenever there’s a hearing going on and someone is doing liveblogging.
re: topics:
The hilarity and then the running joke originated in the comments here, from the Saturday Late Nite vault.
Suzanne @ 192
Ditto!
Although as a part of the original ‘Mod Squad’ on another (non political) site that I think first coined that phrase blog wise in late 2002… Anyway, on behalf of the other ‘Mod Squad’ gang we pass the baton! And again, well done ; )
cancer_cures @ 211
Yes. Something Cheney has whispered in his ear. And many of the Senate dems are wanting to know what????so they can agree, and get the brown painted noses.
Since we are all feeling warm and fuzzy about the Lake, now may be a good time to remind folks about the donate buttons and snail mail address at the upper right corner of the page.
OH! SharonRB, I’ll look for you at YK2 as well. Howdy!
Pachacutec @ 217
thanks, pach. some of the newer arrivals were unfamiliar with the “that is not an appropriate topic for this blog” story.
I used to have a life, pre-FDL
I wake up. Make coffee. Take a quick look at Huffpo for headlines. Then The Lake. It keeps me smart. Or smarter than I was before starting to read it.
There was a preFDL?
Heavy metal, upstairs.
I’ve been around here long enough to witness quite the transformation. But I also have a significant other who has been decisively, albeit lovingly, winning the battle over my free time lately ;)
FDL is still the bees knees.
I continue to visit multiple times daily and donate. woot !

Lack of a regular spot had best not mean lack of posts from Pach, you hear?
*shakes finger at Pach*
Pachacutec @ 217
Well damn, I missed it!
It really sux having to get up earlier than some of y’all go to bed.
Since everyone has gone upstairs now, I wonder whatever became of evil parallel universe.
Good luck, Pach.
sorry for the “ejd”

Lieberman Lays the Groundwork For Another War
by RJ Eskow
This week Joe Lieberman reprised a role he played so well in 2002. He paved the way for another needless and tragic war by outmaneuvering his Democratic colleagues on the Senate floor. This time he forced them to pass an amendment that seems reasonable on the surface, but which lays the groundwork a a new attack that could turn pro-Western Iranians into anti-American terrorists. It passed just as a new poll confirms that the Iranian leadership’s policies are wildly unpopular with their own people.
…
…
The amendment sounds reasonable enough on its face. (Text is here.) It asks for bimonthly reports from the military regarding “external support or direction provided to anti-coalition forces by the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran or its agents … the strategy and ambitions in Iraq of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran; and …. any counter-strategy or efforts by the United States Government to counter the activities of agents of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Iraq.”
It passed on the floor 97-0..
So what does this mean when an Iranian citizen is involved in an attack on our troops? How do we separate the non-government actions from the government actions? If Iran is growing distasteful of its leadership (and becoming more pro-western), why put their stability into question? Why force the elements which are gaining majority to debate over ‘the threat from america’ with the rabid islamo-fascist freak elements of the Ayatollah?
This makes no fucking sense. Even if you wanted to say Joe is ‘an agent of Israel’ , a pro-western Iran would be MORE peaceful to Israel. Why? Mahutmadeggon (however you wanna spell that guys name) is a damn sabre-rattler. His threats to stability, threats of nuclear proliferation, and threats to Israel are making the entire Middle East even more aflame.
And Iranians know this. Poll after poll, he slips. But every time he slips in the polls, America, or Israel, or even Iran’s leader, will start rattling sabres and this causes the citizens in all three countries to become hostile.
What Lieberman is setting up is another threat to peace.
Since you’re going to be working the handles,I’d like to make a format suggestion. Not that I’d advise copying anyone, but TNH has a feature on the upper right side of the column called “Recent Posts” where one can click to particular essays without having to scroll down to find them. Normally this is not such a chore, but when I log on to find Sara Taylor, Part 3, or Gonzales, Part 6, I would like to be able to go directly to Part 1 and later after doing something else (huh, like housework) come back to Part 2, without having to scroll around to find my place. Think you can fix that for me?
In 2004 I bought a modest home far out in the woods, moved in just before elction time. Shortly after the second stolen election I unplugged almost everything for about 18 months, no television, no computer, no telephone, just music, books, and the great outdoors. When I turned the television on winter ‘06 it took about a month before I just let out a scream (thank gawd I have no close neighbors) and opened the ole powerbook for something, anything online besides what I was catching on PBS and MSNBC.. I had never heard of a blog before but within an hour or so I was muddling through my second blog find, Talk Left, informative but the commenters wanted to speak legal only, even when discussing the Rolling Stones.. Somehow a link to FDL popped up and the rest is blog history. Third find was the charm in my blog home shopping excursion.
All my life I have been a man of action and though I still feel guilty about my simple comfortable life to far away from a capitol city to raise the kind of hell we need right now, FDL gave me the information and so many positive directions in which to direct my outrage armed with the knowledge and the shared resolve all of us have.
What happened in the run up to Nov. ‘06, as TSF says, changed everything. For me FDL was the place that made it possible to be part of the change.
One thing I really want is to join in on a small or massive protest or two or three this year. My US out of Iraq sign is almost 17 years old and only one arrest. I do believe it has a few more demonstrations in it. *g*
I have a feeling the time is near to be ready for inconvienient actions.. many of us may have to take it up a notch, buy candles, get colorful, get public, get loud.
The old school live blogging.
One or two after the one that’s your favorite, Pach…this one and the one right after it. Christy was on fire. She could see clearly what many are only now realizing: The Laws Need Not Apply.
cancer cures, If still around follow the links in comment 145 here. The House passed their own version with only two no vote recently and other distubing dot are connected in the link.
Firedoglake has given me a hell of an education on how our government works, explained the pesky details of our legal system and constitutional law, and features some of the best political insights I have been able to find. I can keep up with what is going on without risking a spike in my blood pressure because everyone here is not only wallowing brazenly and without apology in reality, but they are witty and snarky and share my values. There is a feeling here that is like spending an evening in the home of cherished friends with similar political tastes. FDL is a virtual gathering of individuals with varied backgrounds and areas of expertise. Here I can find smart, articulate discussion on almost every subject worth talking about. I love the lake! Especially late and late late night. I have to admit to an addiction to anything oversight related. I adore the scent of searing Republican flesh. Ahhh, it’s finally subpoena season!
Ok, I admit that I am a lurker, but I love reading the blogs and the posts. My best to you Pach. I am not much for posting, but love to read what people who have the same feelings that I have are saying. The disgust and fear of this administration has me on edge. I too was raised by parents who were FDR fanatics. They lived hard during the depression and put the belief in the Democratic principles in my heart. Long live FDL and I will continue to read and relish every word. My best to you all.
I guess everybody went upstairs but I have to add my two cents here. How FDL has most affected my thinking: By making me a lot more aware of the bull—- put out by the Mighty Wurlitzer and its agents. When I was the most proud of FDL: Everything associated with the Libby trial, especially the liveblogging. I kept on telling all my friends that FDL should have gotten a Pulitzer for it. Thanks Jane, Pach, Christy, Marcy, TRex, Swopa, commenters, and the whole crew.
Pach — You’re the best! Maybe not the best writer (see TRex and Jane) or the best analyst (see Christy), but the best, biggest progressive heart (not to slight the others, but you wear yours on your sleeve). As long as your presence hovers over this space, we will treasure it and your contributions. Even behind the scenes, it’s you (and people like you) who make firedoglake the best blog in the land.
Thank you for all that you do.
