The most astounding thing about Blue America endorsing Darcy Burner is that we’re just getting around to it now. Darcy is the quintessential Blue America candidate and we missed her last year. Let’s make up for it this year and go the extra mile in helping her get elected in 2008!
She nearly made it last year when she first challenged rubber stamp Republican Dave Reichert in an upscale suburban Seattle district, WA-08, and drew 122,021 votes to his 129,362– an incredible accomplishment. In fact, it has made a few careerist pols start licking their chops thinking they could step in and take over where she left off. One, a Republican with two first names who says he’s a Democrat now, is going to declare Tuesday.
I suspect Darcy will make mincemeat of him.
There were three big differences between last year and the current election cycle and all three work in Darcy’s favor. First of all, last year was her first run and the voters didn’t know who she was, although nearly 49% of them voted for her by the end of the campaign. Her name recognition now is super high.
Second, in 2006 voters weren’t sure how they felt about Iraq; they are now — and guess who’s got a 100% perfect Cheney voting record. If you said “Dave Reichert,” give yourself a pat on the back. Since being elected to Congress Reichert participated in 17 roll calls about Iraq, the latest being Thursday’s vote to stay the course. He could have just as well given Cheney his proxy and gone to play golf. 17 roll calls in a distinctly anti-war district and 17 votes for endless war.
And the third difference between the last cycle year has to do with the voting patterns of the district. Far more people come out to vote during a presidential year and Bush only took 47% of the vote in 2000 and 48% in 2004. It’s by far the most prosperous district in Washington and it leans in a decidedly progressive and Democratic direction. A presidential year will help Darcy beat Reichert.
Although Darcy and Reichert spent approximately the same amount of money in 2006 — $3 million — Rove funneled another $3 or 4 million into the race. In his infamous powerpoint presentation to the GSA in March, Rove emphasized that bolstering Reichert against Darcy must be a top priority for all loyal Bushies. Last year the Republicans made 585,000 calls into the district, the most of anywhere in the country and the aim was to suppress Democratic turnout and to encourage Republicans.
In the last few days of the campaign Rove operatives were calling every household in the district telling voters that Darcy was about to be indicted as a felon, that Darcy was suppressing minority voters and that Darcy was an investor in Big Oil. It was all smear and lies; typical Rovian tactics.
Darcy sounds sweet, hip and disarming. But her mind is razor sharp and she’s one of those Big Picture Democrats the country is crying out for. She’s had backing from Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, both of Washington’s senators, Emily’s list, labor unions and the DCCC and this year she will get her message out much more effectively than before when the institutional players had no idea who she was at first.
And that message…it’s why we’re here today.
“I’m committed to the long battle for progressive values that we’re going to have over the next 30-40-50 years,” is what she told me on the phone earlier this week. “We’re at a huge inflection point in terms of the direction this country is going to move. We have to have people in position in Congress and in political leadership whose top priority is making sure that government does treat all people equally and that opportunity really does exist for everyone. That’s what I’m committed to spending the rest of my life doing and working hard for.”
And hearing her speaking, you know you want her on your team. Her policy positions couldn’t be more in sync with our own. She’s for what we’re for and against what we’re against. When I asked her about the Bush Cheney Iraq agenda there was no if’s or but’s in her answer.
“I’m the mother of a four and a half year old and I know that when somebody throws a temper tantrum, it’s counterproductive to reward it. I would have voted for the bill with milestones– the one Bush vetoed– and against the one I call “the capitulation bill.’”
Right down the line, Darcy is our kind of candidate.
“The voters in my district tend to be fiscally conservative and socially progressive. Congressman Reichert is fiscally irresponsible and socially conservative.” He also happens to be terrible on environmental issues and WA-08 is one of the most environmentally supportive districts in the United States. Reichert’s environmental voting record is tailor-made for Big Business and willy-nilly development. “He tries to vote on every side of every issue so he can pull a vote out of his pocket to please whoever he’s talking to.”
Darcy is constantly out talking with the voters in the district about Iraq — “they’ve had enough and they want out” — the environment and global warming and health care, the main issues that keep popping up over and over.
But in one of the most high tech savvy areas in America there’s something else that Darcy, the former lead product manager for Microsoft.net, uniquely offers the voters, of Washington and of the U.S. She’s the antidote to a dangerous dinosaur like Senator Ted Stevens.
“We live in a world that is being transformed completely by technology and we have a Congress that doesn’t begin to understand technology. I’ll be the most tech-savvy member of the United State House of Representatives. And when we think about making the complicated decisions that Congress is going to have to make about technology and everything it changes, that experience is going to be incredibly important.”
After Jane’s enthusiastic endorsement of Darcy last month many in our community started donating to her campaign. She’s up against a flim flam man backed by the full might of Karl Rove and she’s going to need all the help she can get. Please join me today in letting Darcy know what we think of candidates who stand for the kinds of things she stands for. A visit to our Blue America page is one very effective way to let her know.

Welcome Darcy! It is an honor to have you come and talk with us.
egregious @ 2
Thanks! I’m thrilled to be here.
Yes thank you.
Darcy, welcome to Firedoglake. In between the time we spoke on the phone and today I found out about an ex-Republican with two first names who wants to run against you in the Democratic primary. It reminded me of the way the Insiders ran Steve Filson against Jerry McNerney last year when they figured out McNerney could beat Pombo. McNerney whipped the Insider pseudo-Democrat and then went on to beat Pombo handily. Are you concerned at all about the primary challenge?
Thanks, Howie. Darcy ran in the next CD over from me here in Washington. Glad to see you’re embracing her second run. I agree w/ your analysis. In this case, second time’s the charm. Bye-bye Reichert.
howieklein @ 5
Actually, it’s great to see validation that people now believe WA-08 is winnable! When I began last cycle, a lot of potential Democratic establishment candidates had turned down the opportunity to run, all of them saying that they didn’t believe any Democrat could win. I guess we demonstrated otherwise.
As for the primary, I’m confident that we can do here what McNerney did in California, and the progressive community will play the major role they need to play.
I was very disappointed in Darcy’s last campaign — I got a LOT of mail from her campaign and it was all about Reichart, almost nothing about her. And please, can we have a different photo other than the little miss sunshine one? I mean the people here were dumb enough to elect Reichert once (now twice) so they must think being a ‘tough’ ex-sheriff is a good thing for ‘fighting terrorists’. Not saying she should play that game, but at least not play into their hands by choosing a campaign photo that makes her look like a ’sweet little girl’. I truly wish she had won. It was so close I really think she could have with a slightly different approach.
Darcy Burner was one of the most exciting candidates I had the honor to personally campaign for last cycle. She came so close in a tough district. I am delighted that she is staying in the game. This country needs dedicated citizens like her. Go, Darcy, go, and let me know what I can do to support.
And welcome to one of my all time favorite sites — firedoglake.
Best to Jane, Christy, Pach, Emptywheel and the other regular posters as well as to the firepups. Joe
YaY!
Hi and welcome Darcy. I was proud to volunteer with phone banking for you election day in 2004 and heard you speak at a rally at BCC with Obama, Cantwell and Gregoire. It’s thrilling to read and *know* you’ll be representing my district next election!
And hello to Howie. Blue America is making a difference. Thanks Howie for all you are doing. Joe
Welcome Darcy! So good to have you here. I love how quickly you put up an ad after the vote on the supplemental saying that you wouldn’t have voted that way your opponent did. I really respect your willingness to play tough.
Good to see you here, Joe. I love when you show up at our Saturday sessions. You always seem to be campaigning for the same great candidates we endorse!! Are you going to be up in WA-08 again this year stumping for Darcy?
Hello Darcy – As you well know, Reichert has voted on both sides of pretty much every issue. He particularly likes to oppose a Democratic bill every step of the way before flipping and voting for it on final passage only, so that, I suspect, he can say he did when you debate him next year.
How can you educate the voters in the 8th about his voting tactics, and undercut him? It seems to me when he says, “I voted for XYZ” you need to challenge him on his actual actions and principles and point out that he really doesn’t appear to stand for anything.
Joe Wilson @ 11
You too, Joe. I hope people appreciate how tireless you were traveling around the country doing fundraisers for progressive candidates during the last election.
howieklein @ 13
It would be an honor
JANE!!! Great to see you. And congratulations for your gorgeous photo in the Wall Street Journal. And the rest of it too. Oh… and thanks for turning me on to Darcy.
Chris K @ 8
Certainly I’m sorry about the result — I wish we had managed to turn out a few more Democratic voters who didn’t show up at the polls, or that we had convinced a few more swing voters. And I and my campaign team have learned a great deal in the process; we will not repeat our mistakes.
It’s certainly arguable that we didn’t do a sufficient job of targeting if a member of FDL didn’t get enough mailings about me, since the odds you’d vote for Reichert are pretty slim. But in general, voters need to both decide to fire the incumbent and to hire the challenger. We were trying to ensure both happened.
I’ll work hard to do better this time around.
Jane Hamsher @ 15
Supporting candidates is a small price to pay compared to what the candidates themselves do both in running and then in serving. They deserve our support. I have already been back east a couple of times and expect to do as much as my time will allow.
Go Ms Burner!
Yay! Ambassador Wilson! Nice smackdown of Issa the other day. We got yer back! (fwiw)
Darcy Burner @ 18
That has a lot to do with why we’re betting on you to go all the way in ‘08, Darcy. By the way, Blue America is open for business today.
Joe Wilson @ 9
Thank you! I’m thrilled to be here — and delighted to hear from you. (But if you were going to move west, couldn’t you have come up here?)
And thank you again for your help last cycle, and for your offer of help this time. I’m honored. And I will certainly take you up on it again.
dakine01 @ 20
Thanks. To think that a twice arrested car thief would dare to open his trap defies belief. Chutzpah, as tony snow would say.
In the last few days of the campaign Rove operatives were calling every household in the district telling voters that Darcy was about to be indicted as a felon, that Darcy was suppressing minority voters and that Darcy was an investor in Big Oil. It was all smear and lies; typical Rovian tactics.
Um, is there a lawyer in the house? How in the world can this be legal?
Welcome, Darcy! Will you speak at Yearly Kos?
Darcy Burner @ 22
I will be there for you. I had a great time with your supporters, with your campaign staff, and with you. I have to run now but look forward to doing what I can to be supportive. Joe
Renee Allen @ 10
Thank you! It’s the knowledge that we’re working on this together that gets me up every day to do this. Your help really matters, and I’ll be honored to represent you.
Chris, I would respectfully submit that Darcy’s loss had nothing to do with her campaign photo, and everything to do with the bulldozer that Karl Rove tried to mow her down with.
I contributed $ to Darcy and also worked on her campaign last year, doorbelling in Renton and Mercer Island. It seemed to me that the voters were quite aware of the differences between Darcy and Reichert, (and not one mentioned photos or that she seemed to sunny and sweet) but sometimes beating an incumbant takes more than one try.
Howie – thank you for featuring Darcy this year. I thought she should have been here last year too, and I’m gald to see she finally made the cut.
Darcy – much has been made in the NW press about whether Rodney Tom will pursue a negative campaign against you. Do you have reason to believe this is so? And do you expect Reichert to chicken out of as many debates this next election as he did last time?
One of the things we’ll be doing in this campaign this year is helping to build a stronger Democratic infrastructure in the district. Darcy has already hired me, a local blogger, to do outreach to the local Democratic legislative district leaders, to young people, to business folks, and more.
This is a district that will make use of a stronger Democratic infrastructure to swing elections at every level in a bluer direction.
Loo Hoo. @ 24
Excellent insight Loo Hoo, particularly because the expenditures for those calls haven’t been filed with the FEC. (The FEC fined me when I was one day late on some cockamamie filing.) So not only was the Rove front group blatantly lying about Darcy, they were illegally supporting Reichert’s campaign.
Jane Hamsher @ 12
Thanks! We clearly need to play tough: the stakes are very high.
Good luck in the campaign!
What’s your position on those Visas that Bill Gates keeps pushing for an expansion of? Why can’t he hire Americans? We need good jobs badly.
And is Microsoft supporting your run? Are they expecting anything in return?
As Howie has pointed out; if progressives are not supported early in the election cycle, it’s way too late around election time. It’s put up the money and support now, because moaning about the corporate Dems at election time is worthless.
Daniel K @ 14
Completely agreed, Daniel. It’s going to take a lot of work to convince voters to look beyond the facade. But once they do look beyond the facade, they’re really not going to like what they see.
One of the things the community can do (especially people who are local) is start talking about Reichert’s lack of principle in every appropriate venue. You’ve already been pointing it out, which is a great start, but we and the grassroots are going to need to push hard on this.
Joe Wilson @ 16
Done. Let’s find a date. :-)
shoephone @ 27
Thanks but I respectfully submit back :-) that when a race is as close as this one was, any little thing could be THE difference.
Hey Darcy,
Glad to see you getting some props from a national audience. I’m in Kirkland, and I contributed to your last campaign.
I think the future of politics in Washington state is in eastern King and northern Pierce Counties. Seattle is solidly Democratic, but eastern King and Pierce Counties are growing rapidly. We need progressive candidates that will address the issues we face here.
I’ll be supporting you in this run also.
Good luck.
Loo Hoo. @ 24
Darcy will be on a panel on Friday, entitled, appropriately enough, “Future Leaders”. There will also be a reception Friday evening for a bunch of candidates, including Darcy, Larry Grant, Eric Massa, Gary Trauner and more – we think it’s going to be the party to be at.
Hope to see you there.
Darcy, your supposed primary challenger had a habit up until last year of contributing money to Republicans such as Reagan Dunn.
Just so it is clear, for the record, did you ever contribute money to Reagan Dunn?
Darcy,
I live in Alaska, but my wife and I attended a fundraiser for you last summer near Carnation. I’m hoping your 2008 campaign will be more articulate than 2006. The complaint I heard most from friends in the 8th district was that you were spending too much time “raising money on the other side of the lake.” I do hope you cream Rodney Tom in the primary, if he actually does file this week like he’s saying.
Good luck.
and – {{{{shoephone}}}} – long time, no see!
Darcy, when we spoke on the phone, you told me that Global Warming and environmental concerns were a really big deal in WA-08. When I checked out Reichert’s voting record on the environment, it was pretty dismal. Are the voters just not aware of it? Are you getting any help from the Sierra Club or other environmental defense groups?
Welcome, Darcy! Looking forward to seeing you kicking DINO butt before taking out Reichert.
shoephone @ 27
Yes. Tenacity in politics is a good thing. Few difficult and important things are accomplished on the first try.
It’s an interesting question. Certainly I hope that Mr. Tom keeps it clean, but the early indications are not promising. (My suspicions are raised by the recent appearances of sockpuppets on local blogs.)
Well, last time he did the Seattle Times debate, a forum at the Newcastle Golf Club, and a joint appearance on TV with Robert Mak. I suspect that’s three more than he’ll be willing to do this time.
Lynn, I’ll look forward to Friday and Friday night at YK2!
Lynn @ 28
I think it important to point out the incredible team that Darcy has already put together for 2008. In addition to Lynn (one of WA state’s premier local bloggers,) Darcy has signed on Dan Kully of LHKK to do her media. (Dan’s the guy who did Jon Tester’s TV ads. And he’s local.) She also has an incredibly effective (and at times Machiavellian) communications adviser in Sandeep Kaushik.
Darcy had to spend an immense amount of time and energy during the last cycle, just convincing the political and media establishment that she was competitive. This time around she gets to focus all her efforts on kicking Reichert’s ass.
amberglow @ 31
I support making sure our visa policies create good jobs and economic prosperity in this country, rather than undermine them. Certainly I’ve seen Microsoft use H1B visas to bring in uniquely talented people from all over the world and create new groups around them, thus creating more good jobs for Americans. (Bring in one Chinese researcher who’s the leader worldwide in natural language processing, and then hire 50 American workers into the new group that gets created.) This is a good use of those visas.
But obviously we need to ensure that they’re not used to replace American workers at lower wages, and there are some modifications to the program that have been suggested by the Communications Workers of America that I support to address that.
Microsoft as a company has a policy of supporting incumbents, and their PAC has given me no money.
However, many of my former coworkers are enthusiastic supporters; in return for my support they expect me to work hard for the people of this country and remain true to my principles. That’s a commitment I’m absolutely willing to make.
OT..but someone did a nice job on Darcy Burner’s Wikipedia page…I think those small things help.
Daniel K @ 37
Never.
I have, however, contributed thousands of dollars of my own money to progressive candidates and organizations.
Darcy, your son-who is not rewarded for temper tantrums-is a doll!
By the way, if anyone is interested in Darcy’s musical tastes– Crooks & Liars is covering that today. Watch that Indigo Girls video; it’s way more powerful than I expected it to be. Darcy’s 36 and music– AND TECHNOLOGY– are integral to her existence. We need more people like Darcy in Congress and less members like Ted Stevens.
Unfortunately I don’t think that’s how the H1B visa program is being used. When I take the 545 bus to work in the morning from Redmond to Seattle we seem to make a couple of stops in India along the way. As someone in the high tech field myself, I know we have people in this area able to fill these jobs, but those we bring here from India and the Far East, while competent, are getting paid less, and diluting the market.
howieklein @ 39
Both the Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters endorsed me last time. However, there were astroturf groups in the district in the 2006 cycle that were running ads in local papers thanking Reichert for his periodic pro-environment vote or statement, and these weren’t aggressively counteracted by the actual environmental community. It is my hope that we’ll all focus on getting this done in 2008.
That said, in general the voters of the district believe Reichert’s doing a dismal job. Some get distracted by his looks, though, and we need to make it clear that looking like a Congressman isn’t the same as doing the job.
Ok, a cut to the chase question: what would be your strategy as my congresswoman to getting us out of Iraq?
I don’t care about your son, your ads, or how much money you raise. I do care about:
ending the war in Iraq along with ending the US war economy/empire.
making real and probably painful decisions on global warming.
campaign finance reform so that lobbists don’t determine policy.
Last time around your policy on Iraq was all over the map. Your website talked about ‘winning’. What is your position on these issues for the next campaign?
thanks.
Greetings from Washington, DC, Darcy. Fair warning: the summers here are hell…
I’m wondering where you stand on a number of issues of interest to the lesbian, gay, bi, trans community. Do you support the Employment Non Discrimination Act? What do you think of allowing lesbian and gay servicemembers to serve the nation out of the closet? And, Do you feel the federal definition of hate crimes should include sexual orientation and gender identity?
Thanks.
Thanks, Darcy, but i’m not so sure that’s how those visas are being used either. And why are bigshots trying to expand the number of them? We have tons and tons of qualified people to fill any available slot in any company here. It’s a money thing, no?
Jobs really are a zero-sum thing, and we desperately need good ones to stay here, or we won’t have a middle class any more. We’ve seen too many millions of jobs disappear already, and importing people when there are already people who can fill them is self-defeating for us as a functioning and healthy country.
Darcy – I actually think that Tom’s primary challenge to you should be regarded as an opportunity, rather than as something unseemly, as some Dems are characterizing it. Beating him in the primary will make you an even stronger candidate.
Darcie:
Do you actually OPPOSE the whole idea of the Iraq ICORP (Invasion, Conquest, Occupation, Rape & Pillage?
or do you, as so many prominent DEMS do, merely oppose ‘losing’ it, and seek a ‘new strategy for winning’?
yeah, it’s a trick question.
thanks…
Great to see you here, Mike. For anyone who doesn’t know, Mike Rogers is a giant killer, who runs PageOneQ and blogActive and helped Republican hypocrites like Mark Foley (FL) and Ed Schrock (VA) decide to resign. He’s working on Idaho senator Larry Craig and some big surprises this year as well.
Are you serious? You are going to focus on insulting voters because they vote for a person based on their looks?
I think you should focus on Darcy, and leave the playground tactics alone.
Darcy Burner @ 51
Having grown up in Seattle (Laurelhurst, Roosevelt High) I can imagine the level of sophistication in the district with regard to environmental issues is pretty high. I would imagine this would be a pretty important issue for them.
Darcy Burner @ 33
Darcy, have you heard of the Rapid Response Network? (http://www.rapidresponsenetwork.org) You and like-minded people should sign up with the Washington state contingent. It’s free, and it gives you access to motivated people willing to get the word out about various issues.
Here’s how it works: As a member, you can draft up action alerts, complete with URLs with more information, to pass on to the other members. You can target it to particular counties, or the entire state. The members then use the information to write letters to the local print media or make phone calls to call-in shows. This way, a handful of people can affect how a given issue is seen.
Give it a try — I think you’d find it useful.
Welcome Darcy,
What would you suggest for a long term solution to our budget crisis?
what Mike asked too.
And have you gotten in touch with Tim Gill or vice versa? (he’s up there in the Northwest, no? He invented Quark Xpress, and he’s built a network to support candidates who are supporting our equal rights)
Obviously the H1B visas are not being used to bring in one or two uniquely qualified specialists, but to bring in thousands of folks who work for 1/2 or less of what the US workers who used to have those jobs were paid.
Darcy, are you going to stand up for the folks who used to have those jobs, or parrot MS company lines on this issue?
here’s an article on Gill and what he’s doing: http://www.time.com/time/natio…..79,00.html
“…Impatient with the lack of gay rights progress this past decade, Gill is pushing hard to end injustice and inequality by the end of the next decade. And recognizing that most anti-gay initiatives are born at the state level, Gill has developed a national political strategy based on successes in Colorado. …”
Odd patterns at Blue America today. All the donations are for hefty amounts. THANK YOU FOR THAT. But I want to reassure anyone who can’t make hundred dollar donations, that the success we’ve had at Blue America is primarily from lots of small donations. They add up and they add up to a lot. Can we have a matching fund right now? If 20 people donate $5 each between now and 1pm that’ll be $100 and I’ll kick in another $100 and then we will have helped Darcy with $200– and that’s a couple of TV cable spots. Here’s where you can contribute.
Daniel K @ 51
Let’s be clear on what my goals are:
* Get our troops out of Iraq;
* Return control of Iraq to the Iraqis;
* Avoid a human rights catastrophe and the potential loss of hundreds of thousands of lives.
In all cases, including with respect to Iraq, I believe in the principles this country was founded on — that all persons are created equal, that they have unalienable rights no government is entitled to abridge, and that legitimate government can exist only with the consent of the governed. Those principles apply just as well to an Iraqi as to an American.
We progressives have allowed ourselves to get mired down in the details of how we’re going to do something in Iraq, rather than making it clear that the difference between the Bush Republicans and is is more fundamental: they disagree with what it is we need to do. They don’t agree with the goals I began with.
So having established what I want to do, we can certainly have a discussion of how we’re going to get it done. We should not continue to fund indefinite occupation, and I would vehemently fight against doing so. It’s clear we need to commit to getting out, and that we need benchmarks and a timeline for doing so. It’s also clear we need to engage the international community so as to avoid a human rights catastrophe.
But until we get people in power who agree with the basic objectives, I fear that no discussion of methods is going to get us anywhere.
Jane Hamsher @ 58
District 8 has a lot of environmentally conscious folks in it – Mercer Island, Bellevue, Newport Hills, but it also has a lot of suburban communities full of people who sort of envision themselves as rugged individualists. Driving through the southern parts of district 8 last summer – for the first time in 30 years – I was shocked at how many miles and miles and miles of subdivisions have popped up south and east of Renton all the way down to Puyallup. The kinds of people I saw driving around in this area struck me as fairly GOP-oriented. A lot of W and Reichert stickers on new pickup trucks and Suburbans.
Welcome Ms. Burner.
Please give us an update on Hanford.
And make good use of this $50. Kick some butt.
Little something for BlueAm too, Howie!
howieklein @ 66
Done!
Mike Rogers @ 53
Duly noted.
I believe all people should be treated fairly. Employees should be evaluated on their job performance, not their family status. Servicemembers should be evaluated on their service to their country, not who they fall in love with. And in cases in which we have groups of people who are the target of crimes, we should protect them.
Ed*ard Teller @ 39
Hello my pal, Ed Teller! I’m still listening to the CD you gave me last summer.
I remember the complaints about Darcy’s “other side of the lake” fundraising too, but I think that Lynn’s efforts on that front will help considerably this time. The 8th district, as you know (since you have friends there) is a rapidly growing district, with lots of young families moving in, and there are also more college students now that BCC offers a four-year program. The demographics point to the particpation of more socially and environmentally conscious voters. And the fact that ‘08 is a presidential election year can only help with larger turnout.
Goldy @ 44
Goldy rightly points out that we have a great staff already. For me, the innovation on this campaign is going to come with the blending that comes from merging that talent with the local netroots and grassroots communities that support Darcy. We will be working hard to make use of the best of the establish while connecting with and helping to grow the folks who are part of this great upwelling of democratic revival.
Ed*ard Teller @ 66 brings up a good issue: how will you look to improve your 43% vote total in Pierce County? The 7000 votes you trailed Reichert by there pretty much made up the difference for the entire district.
Donations:
I’m in.
That 3rd astrisk is a weasle, Ms. Burner. Are you willing to accomplish the first two, at the expense of the third? If not, how many troops are you willing to leave in place “re-deployed”
Also, your reply to concerns about H1 visas sound straight from the “spin” cycle. Care to elaborate?
Please, how do those goals differ from the DC GOP/DEM boilerplate? I think even the Chimperor would agree with those “goals”, as long as they weren’t fleshed out too much…
just askin’
./
Hey Darcy! I found your story about choice incredibly moving, if you want to share it.
Also, so everyone knows, Darcy came to the New Organizing Institute, which trains young progressives, and helped inspire a whole cadre of organizers. I’m looking forward to a Congress with Darcy in it.
Daniel K @ 74
Yes, I second that. The progressives are in the King County portion of WA-08.
Quite a crew here for Darcy today. Welcome, Darcy, to FireDogLake. Please return again and send us news of your progress.
I’m in.
amberglow @ 54
Actually, jobs aren’t a zero-sum thing. I could do a software startup (instead of running for Congress) and create a dozen good jobs in the next few months. Or I could choose not to do so (because, say, I’m a bit busy), and those jobs wouldn’t get created. The size of the economic pie isn’t fixed; it can grow or shrink.
The key for us is pursuing policies that create the largest number of good jobs here for Americans. Bad policies result in only McJobs being created, or in good jobs going elsewhere without being replaced by more and better jobs here.
I want to take my understanding of the economic engines of my district, of business and technology, to Congress so that the people in my district (and all over this country) who work hard can do well.
donation submitted.
Matt Stoller @ 76
Good to see you Matt! It was Matt who actually hooked us up with Darcy’s campaign.
Hey Darcy!!
Great to see you here. I look forward to your successful 08 run.
Thanks a bunch for helping out my sister Maureen in the Mercer Island city council race.
Looking forward to seeing you at Yearly Kos.
You could do that, Darcy, but you’re not, nor is anyone, it seems to many of us. Good jobs leave and new good jobs are not being created. Bad jobs are, and not even enough to cover the increase in working age pop each month, let alone to employ those laid off from the good jobs, according to all statistics.
If people want to immigrate here, fine. Importing people specifically for jobs that others already here are qualified for is wrong.
Do you see an increase in the number of those visas as a good policy or a bad one? Importing others to do work people here can do is not any sort of “economic engine” to my eyes.
shoephone @ 78
I was thinking of the new growth areas between Enumclaw, Covington and the Lake Meridian area east of Kent also. Most of that was farmland when I lived in Washington. Now it is a succession of middle class and upper middle class suburbs. As you get to the east of that area, closer to the Cascades – all in King County – you see more and more driveways and carports with 4-wheelers and snow machines parked away, with the W and Richert bumper stickers all over the place. All King County.
shoephone @ 76
Let me be clear: I’m planning on reaching out to all of the voters in the district who can be persuaded to vote for me, regardless of where they live. And I’m intending to reach out to them as effectively as I possibly can, by addressing the issues they care about and by using communications channels they prefer.
We focused an enormous amount of energy (and money) on Pierce County last time around, and did better there than any Democratic House candidate in the district’s history. I certainly expect we’ll want to build on that success, and use best practices that we can apply more broadly there.
For instance, we had a PCO (Jerry Beckendorf) who worked with a small group of his neighbors and talked to every voter in his precinct a couple of times in the year before the election. They weren’t highly scripted conversations; they were organic, neighbor-to-neighbor. And those conversations won us 100 more votes in that single precinct that we’d have otherwise had. (We lost by only 5 swing votes per precinct, to put that in perspective. A 100 vote difference is HUGE.)
Darcy: I am supporting you now as I did last campaign. Thanks so much for your great program for our Mason County JJ Dinner – we loved having you in Shelton. I will be talking to my friends in Pierce County to boost your votes in that region. Keep up the energy.
Karen
Darcy,
In two weeks, I’m going to be down in Washington, helping my 88-yo mom move from District 9 to Mercer Island, in your district. She’ll be moving in with my sister’s family, who ALL voted for you, including their kids and their adopted Cambodian kids – all adults now. I’m sure mom will be one tough 89-year-old voter for you next year, both in the primary and in the general.
kirk91 @ 64
ain’t the answer clear from her replies?
To Howie Klein:
I love what you’re doing with the Blue America campaign. I would like to strongly recommend that you have Larry Kissell on for one of these chats too. He only lost by 375 votes in NC-08. I think he would make an excellent freshman classmate for Darcy and the other blue folks who will win next year.
What is your position on the loss of the traditional writ of habeas corpus, the continued illegal wiretapping of US citizens and the other abuses of power that the Bush administration has perpetrated (along with many Democrats)? What will you do to restore these rights, if anything?
Kevster @ 81
Maureen Judge, for those of you reading this, is a FANTASTIC candidate for Mercer Island City Council in my district. I’m doing everything I can to help her win — and if you’re so inclined, you should too!
wgg: tokin lib’rul @ 87
Yes Tokin, the answer in this case unfortunately, is quite clear from her replies.
Welcome, Darcy!
It is great to see everyone here today. I’m going over to make Howie match my contribution… anyone want to follow me?
Howie,
there’s a good candidate gonna try to take on Heather Wilson in NM-1, next year, Martin Heinrich, currently a city councilman for the most liberal council district in the city.
Even patsy madrid’s lame campaign and deer-in-the-headlights moment ALMOST unseated the Domenici’s congressional laptop. Heinrich’s got a pretty good chance.
check him out…
.
Kevster @ 89
Kevster, we had Larry on last year, gave him the idea for his big gas station promotion and gave him his pick of any date he wanted to come back this year. He picked September 29. Put it in your calendar.
wgg: tokin lib’rul @ 87
The answer is clear: I support the reforms proposed by CWA to fix the system so it can only be used in the way I’ve described. I will fight bringing workers in on H1Bs to replace Americans at a lower wage. I will oppose giving tax breaks to American companies for outsourcing jobs.
Whenever I look at any piece of legislation, my first question will be this: “Does this help the hard-working people in my district and in this country, or does it hurt them?”
I believe our national policies should reward work, not merely wealth. And I will do everything I can to make that the case.
Ed*ard Teller @ 86
Wonderful! You should stop in and say hi; I’d love to see you. Will you have time for a cup of coffee? :-)
Ed*ard Teller @ 89
Wonderful. As you know, the weather is pretty amazing this time of year.
If any of your family is inclined to volunteer, they can get ahold of us at campaign@darcyburner.com. We are looking to get individuals involved in more robust ways than campaigns traditionally do.
Jacqrat @ 94
Not until I know that she would be any different than a ‘business as usual’ DLC style democrat. Having “cool” youtube ads isn’t a subsitute for policy.
Darcy Burner @ 96
I actually buy Darcy’s argument – it’s that jobs that go off-shore that result in lost jobs – immigrants who come here take jobs, but also buy stuff and contribute to the economy and this create employment.
Remember when all those immigrants were rounded up and detained in Texas? The economies of the small towns where they lived collapsed and buisnesses closed.
Matt Stoller @ 75
Hi Matt! What a week it’s been since we last lunched together…
I think that the choice story would be better told than typed; we’ll look at capturing it on video.
Jacqrat @ 95
Yes, Jacqui. I followed you a few minutes ago.
Ed*ard Teller @ 89
ET – I’m gone the weekend of the 27-29th, but if you’re still in town part of the following week, would love to see you — after you see Darcy, of course!
I know of an even better Thai restaurant than the one we ate at last year…
((((((((((((shoephone))))))))))))
I saw Darcy speak at the New Organizing Institute training… she was inspiring and very smart.
DARCY,
Thank you for making yourself available
to the folks on Firedoglake.
MY QUESTION:
How do we reconcile the existence of those several large, expensive, PERMANENT BASES in Iraq, with the idea of our LEAVING Iraq?
I never hear one mentioned along
with the other.
Could you clear this up?
Thank you.
kirk91 @ 92
I’m horrified by the degree to which our Constitution and the rule of law have been undermined. The only oath members of Congress take is the one to uphold the Constitution. I’ll do everything in my power to restore the Constitution and the rights it guarantees to the people of the United States, including restoration of habeas corpus and the appropriate checks on the Executive branch.
And no, I do not believe that ANYONE is above the law — even the President. Congress must perform their role in ensuring that’s enforced. I will.
nikto @ 107
That’s simple: no permanent bases in Iraq.
Darcy Burner @ 109
Is there anything we, the people can do, besides relentlessly calling our representatives and letting them know exactly what you stated? It’s like reason and logic have gone out of style.
The CWA once fought to keep the # of H1Bs at 65k; congress however, succumbed to the cries of bidness and just about doubled it the next year.
That was 05-06.
I have just been over CWA pages and cannot find a concise statement of what they’re now willing to tolerate.
an you illuminate us?
(you can’t unless you see the question, of course)
Darcy Burner @ 110
I have a question about that. Why isn’t the whole base thing being investigated? It’s like no one wants to talk about all the money we are spending over there and what exactly it’s being spent on. Like just the other day, it was reported that a quarter of a billion dollars was stole from a bank, yet there was hardly any news coverage of it.
Bonjour Jacqrat! J’espair tu va bien.
Darcy,
I coughed up a benjamin for you at Act Blue. i have just one request:
Please stand up for the working class in this country. I came out of a working class family, years ago, and what’s happened to that part of America over the past thirty years is truly shameful.
The Democratic Party used to represent working class people. It’s past time that it started doing it again.
Darcy Burner @ 99
Duh? Of course. I’ll bring some Copper River sockeye I smoked myself. I’ll call your office when I get in, a week from Wednesday.
shoephone – I’ll be at 206-242-1742 from the 26th through the 11th of August. Love to see you again!
folks arriving on visas very often become immigrants…but FIRST they take jobs the USers could do, just more expensively. because they work for less money, and frequently send a lot of it back home, their admission is not an unalloyed ‘good’ for the Murkin marketplace–just for the employers.
ET – The ph # is noted. I’m looking forward to it!
Thanks Howie and Jane for inviting Darcy here, and thanks Darcy for giving your time and attention.
I’m very much looking forward to reading the words “Darcy Burner — D (Washington)” in newspapers and blogs in 2009. It is going to happen! Go Darcy!
it’s a miracle…the lost have been found…
Darcy-
I’m very glad to see you running again, especially garnering the endorsement of Blue America and Firedoglake. I’m considering volunteering, but I’ve not heard your position on what I consider the main problem we have today: it is the Democrats themselves (specifically the congressional Dems) who have failed our country by not fulfilling their constitutional duty to oppose the unethical and at times outright criminal activities of the Republican party and the administration. Case in point: we know that the Dems prevailed in the ‘06 election because of the country’s desire to end the war, but once in office they completely ignored their mandate. I think you touched on this briefly and in a limited context @ 108, but I would like to hear specifically that you will oppose the Democratic party’s corruption as fervently as you will oppose the administration’s.
On a related note, what is your opinion on the state of the corporate media both locally and nationally and how it corrupts the political debate, and what to you intend to do about it in office?
Hey Darcy,
Do you plan on letting your campaign manager issue negative comments about the Firefighter Unions, that don’t support you, and then go on to tell us what are problems and issues are? We really enjoyed you telling us firefighters what we needed and what are issues are/were last year. Let me guess, you once took a tour of a fire station, so that qualifies you to speak thoroughly about us?
Thanks for joining us at FDL today, Darcy. You’re welcome back whenever you have something you want to tell us. And we’ll be doing what we can to help you defeat the ex-Republican with 2 first names in the Democratic primary and then the main attraction in Nov. of 2008.
By the way, everyone, next week we’ll have Jon Powers visiting with us. He’s an incredible young Iraq war vet from upstate New York with a compelling story– and a plan to retire rubber stamp Republican Tom Reynolds.
Union Fireman @ 122
Hey sock puppet, it’s nice to see one of my regular trolls following the link from Horsesass.org. Um… no it isn’t.
And speaking of issues that are important to firefighters, how many of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations did Reichert push through when he was chair of that all important sub-committee?
Every now and then, Jane used to put up a post that welcomed lurkers to wade on into the comments. I used to read FDL daily, but lately maybe only once a week, if that. I’ll wade in for probably the last time.
This thread is a good example of a comment section that just isn’t worth an outsider’s time. For your benefit, I did a little counting. Out of 123 comments in the thread, 59 of them were pretty much shmoozing, glad-handing and mutual backslaping with no discussion of issues at all.
To Darcy’s credit, she managed to address a few important issues, but not enough for a non member of the clique to bother with. The recent Clinton visit was an even bigger fluff fest. Given the amount of justified grief FDL gives corporate media for lobbing softball questions to politicians in return for access, it’s sad to see the same going on here.
Oh, I forgot. “Zed!”
Whatever the hell that means.
Thats twice, my comments havent gone through. Is the problem technical or personal on the part of FDL?
Darcy,
You lost last time due to your own personal failings, not exercising your vote, lack of experience, and embelishing your resume. What have you done to fix those problems?
You have never worked on or been a leader on one single public policy issue in Washington State. You lost in the general last time, and you will loose in the primary this time. I hope people on the national level will see what the people of the 8th district saw last time. Darcy you are a looooooooooooooooser.
Union Fireman @ 122
It’s “our”, not “are”. If you don’t have a basic understanding of English, why should I believe you know what Darcy was saying about anything?
Frankly, you don’t read as though you’re qualified to speak about anything.
grandgadfly @ 127
Your guy won by being two-faced and sending little punks like you out to do his dirty work. Glad to see he hasn’t lost his touch.
Otto, I see your comments. If you try refreshing the whole page, and not refreshing comments, that should work.
Sorry I missed the fun, but was wrapped up in a project. Good luck next year, Darcy. I think if you just keep on speaking and writing like you did here, you’ll do fine.
Cujo359 & Goldy
I think you should let Darcy speak for herself. If she has people like you speaking/responding on her behalf, or better yet, she associates and rubs elbows with rude people such as yourselves.
She will be hard pressed to get those swing votes she needs in the more rural portions of the 8th.
I kinda feel like the poster above. I came here to “read” what she had to say about important issues. What I got was a “social hour” with friends and supporters. Some social scheduling was taken care of, and one of her favorites, smokes a darn good salmon, and is willing to share it with Darcy. Oh I also forgot to mention the $$$$$ that were raised for her.
Christopher @ 132
Gosh, thanks Cristopher. There’s just one little problem, I’m just speaking for myself. I despise people who come to a thread like this and leave half-witted insults with nothing to back them up. If they have a serious case to make, then they should make it. If they want to insult people without providing any substance, as far as I’m concerned they can go elsewhere.
[In case there’s any doubt, I’m not speaking for Firedoglake, either.]
Where has being civil to these people ever gotten us? It’s just gotten good people swiftboated and smeared. I’m going to call bullshit when I read it. If you don’t like that, skip down to the next commenter. Oh, here’s an expanded version of that thought:
http://cujo359.blogspot.com/20…..-here.html
I’m sorry if the swing vote can’t understand that, but somehow I think they can.
Well, Christopher, you must have been smoking something other than salmon while Darcy was relating her concerns over the outsourcing of jobs, the war in Iraq, re-instituting Habeas Corpus, holding the Bush administration accountable for attacks on our civil liberties, etc. etc. etc.
Hope you enjoyed your high. At least the rest of us learned something.
Chris K @ 8
In terms of money spent I agree, it was a very poor ad cycle that didn’t disseminate anything about where she stood on anything (the Cantwell campaign was the same), in many ways her campaign failed to respond to (an equally flawed) Reichart attack/-ve campaign.
Her advisors made the same mistake as those of Kerry with the “swift boat veterans”, the best form of defence is attack.
Hi!
I completely support you (raised in Bellevue, now live in Seattle).
I do hope that you lose the “and that’s just wrong” schtick. It sounds like a whiny , 6 year old girl talking to her daddy.
Good luck!
Smart people all over smart Seattle & Bellevue are sending Darcy money now. This will intimidate little Karl R. …FOR CERTAIN. Stop fearing that jerk, he’s history. All he has is money, no message worth listening to- Darcy, help make the future!!
Rob Odell @ 137
So all of Seattle and Bellevue is sending Darcy MONEY. Pissing off Karl…..
All Reichart has is Money, but no message.
You do the double speak well.
I wanted to hear Darcy speak. I didn’t want to hear Talking Points. I surely don’t care about who’s good looks buys a vote.
Darcy is running the same show as in
06′. ‘Someone should tell her GWB isn’t running against her”
I live in the state just to the north, well it’s a province. Anyway word hereabouts re: Dave Reichert is “isn’t that the guy who could’ve nabbed the Green River Killer guy years earlier, if he hadn’t been so busy with “hair management” issues and press conferences? Hair management and press conferences are related you know……..and priorities are priorities….
Reichert is kinda the Rudy Guiliani of the Pacific Northwest and his manly law and order cred sits on just as rotten and flimsy of a foundation. Arresting big name bad guys gets you lots of press, if it happens to take years and decades to find said bad guy, no problem, just more press for longer.
Christopher @ 132
Christopher, first, I don’t speak for Darcy. Second, I think we disagree on tactics. My role, as a local blogger, is to try to keep the opposition and the media honest. Trust me, I know from trolls, and I know so-called “Union Fireman” very well. You want to see rude? Read my comment threads once in a while and see what has come from my zero-moderation policy.
It would be nice if campaigns were simply about honest, open, detailed debates on the issues. They’re not. They’re about winning. To ignore the fact that some people on the other side approach politics as a blood sport is to cede the arena to Rove and his cohorts.
