Looks like President Bush has scheduled a press conference for today, beginning at 10:30 am ET. Wonder what he’ll be asked about:
– Booby Woodward revving up the bus: CIA Said Instability Seemed Irreversible.
– The Presidential dodge and pony show on meeting so few of the benchmarks in Iraq this past FU (Friedman Unit).
– Why Michael Chertoff still has a job, given that digestive issues aren’t exactly a solid foundation for threat assessments.
– And speaking of Chertoff, things still suck in the Gulf Coast for a whole lot of Americans. Can some enterprising reporter please ask what in the hell Bush plans on doing in terms of any follow-up whatsoever to all those kleig light promises? (And, btw, huge thank you to Shaila Dewan for continuing to do follow-ups on the Katrina aftermath. Her reporting has been compelling and much appreciated.) Given how crappily the DHS handled the aftermath of Katrina, and how many questions linger about how ill-prepared we truly are for dealing with any other catastrophic issue that may (god forbid) befall another area of the nation, why exactly does Chertoff still have a job?
– Why is the President so afraid to allow Harriet Miers to testify before Congress? And how does he feel about inherent contempt?
– How does the President feel about the fact that criminal defendants are filing “Libby leniency” motions based on his commutation of Scooter for “excessive sentence” under the federal sentencing guidelines? And, further, does he plan on beginning an initiative to revise those guidelines downward for all criminal defendants — or was Libby just his special case good buddy who got special treatment?
If you were a WH reporter, what questions would you be asking President Bush this morning? A good place to start for some ideas is Dan Froomkin’s fact check yesterday on Bush Administration statements.

Somehow, I thought that the shrub stuck in the sand picture was appropriate for today. SIGH
My question:
Mr. President, it’s clear the you and many in your administration have broken the law on many occasions so why haven’t you and Mr. Cheney resigned?
So, no hearing kabuki this morning?
far, far away in the mountains…. anything happening I should know about?

Semantics. WH will talk about ‘degrees of progress’ toward meeting benchmarks, as opposed to the AP report that *none* of the benchmarks have been met.
HJC is up on C-Span3.
I would like to know what kind of oath he requires his people to swear to that pushes any duty to the Constitution to a back seat… And, what is he doing to his good friend, Harriet? He is really expecting quite a lot from her, particularly after his sh*t all over her.
Someone just has to start spilling the beans!

and here’s the roll call vote.
http://www.senate.gov/legislat…..vote=00242
Write Senator Brownback (kansas), Senator Vitter (LA) and Senator Johnson (SD) for having the nerve to not vote on such an outrageous amendment having to do with more aggressive actions towards Iran. There is no hard evidence to back up the claims being repeated by the Iraq war zealots.
Hearing starting on c-span 3
I see no former United States Supreme Court nominees in the room….
EPU’d from last thread:
3 OTs:
1. It’s official. The TP goes overhand by 76% http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..81218/2120
2.democracynow.org this morning is a must see. Interviews U.S. soldiers who have served in Iraq and are featured in a full-length Nation article.
3. The bookI’ve been waiting for on CIA (Legacy of Ashes), written by NYT Tim Weiner & reviewed by Michael Beschloss. The fundamental reason why the spook business doesn’t work is because it is essentially secret and thus not subject to oversight or competition, which leads to bad behavior. This I learned from the first book I read on the subject, The Second Oldest Profession.

Hi gang.
I grabbed the towel & umbrella & headed down to the Lake for a nice morning, before my cuppa, and….

anyone else think she always looks as if she’d been looking thru one-a those “trick” pairs of binocs that blackens yer eyelids.
oh meow. shame on me. off to get a cuppa.
yes. Christy. an excellent morn for snark indeed. Thanks!
can’t believe there was so little coverage of yestidie’s hearings. Well, at least Leahy got a big fat thankyou note from this house, harumph!
Let’s not demean the heroic sage scrub with association to these thugs.
Inhofe (R-Fantasyland) was just on CSPAN-2 arguing against the fairness doctrine, because the public and the troops only WANT to listen to conservatives on radio.
Am keeping an ear on the HJC — but nothing as yet. Will let everyone know when and if things get going. C-Span3 has some hearing room video going at the moment. You can watch online here.
Re: emergency preparedness -
Carmona testified that he was livid that he wasn’t ALLOWED to lead during the Katrina recovery – he has bona fide emergency preparedness credentials, and as a trauma surgeon, he knew how to triage, “package” and remove patients to acceptable treatment and staging areas. Instead, Brownie was given the leader mantle, which he promptly threw into the flood waters as he fled.
Also, the public has a right to be fully informed about public health problems – in my view, the surgeon general is the doctor and the public is the patient. Therefore, the medical license of the surgeon general holds him or her to the standard of care in a physician patient relationship.
One more thing, I know this is the stuff that isn’t of interest to the majority, but I’m a health policy wonk -
The HHS put on a sham five week long “Pandemic Flu Leadership Blog” which was supposed to be a conversation between HHS, activists, public and experts about planning and preparedness. Instead, it was canned talking points that were inaccurate, contradictory and which abdicated federal planning and preparedness responsibility. The surgeon general would have been the natural leader, if there had been one.
Naturally, Sec Leavitt is now using the “blog” as a political tool by touting it as a public conversation when in reality not a single response was made to any commenter and questioner.
In Bush’s Cleveland speech earlier this week, he gave HHS and himself an “A” for pandemic flu preparedness.
There was an article recently that DHS has 138 unfilled senior positions and another 92 under recruitment. This is out of 575. Vacancies are in areas such as intelligence and FEMA.
You might wonder why this hasn’t been a priority for Chertoff, especially with the rumblings in his stomach. Oh right, he’s incompetent. Never mind.
OldCoastie @ 8
Sara Taylor got hammered pretty good yesterday before Leahy. You might check some fdl posts from yesterday.

Or an ostrich maybe.
Mr President,
You stated that Al Qaeda was and is our primary enemy in the world today and that you would stop at nothing to capture Bin Laden. How do you reconcile this to the new NIE that claims Al Qaeda has reconstituted itself back to its pre-9/11 strength while hiding in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan?
As well, how do you feel when your DHS, Mr Chertoff has a “gut feeling” that there is going to be an Al Qaeda attack here in the US this summer?
Don’t these two situations mean you’ve been a failure in all your adminstration efforts to protect us because of your invasion of Iraq, which had nothing to do with Al Qaeda?
[I won’t be holding my breath]
well Conyers, Sanchez, etc are there. No Miers – empty seat with her name card…
Linda Sanchez chairing this morning – one can only hope that the first order of business will concern a contempt citation.
Fingers & toes crossed, hope Harriet feels betrayed enough to show & tell.
I love the big “Mrs. Miers” sign in front of her empty chair.
If they don’t issue a contempt citation we might as well pack it in and go home.
Someone should try to get Issa to make those statements about Plame outside the House Chambers…so he can get his a$$ sued…but like Joe McCarthy he hides his slanders behind Congressional immunity.
What a coward!
Meanwhile we should constantly point out to Issa, King and their ilk that Valerie Plame put her life on the line for this country dozens of times while trying to preempt terrorists from obtaining WMD’s.
She WAS COVERT!
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18924679/
The unclassified summary of Plame’s employment with the CIA at the time that syndicated columnist Robert Novak published her name on July 14, 2003 says, “Ms. Wilson was a covert CIA employee for who the CIA was taking affirmative measures to conceal her intelligence relationship to the United States.”
Plame worked as an operations officer in the Directorate of Operations and was assigned to the Counterproliferation Division (CPD) in January 2002 at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
The employment history indicates that while she was assigned to CPD, Plame, “engaged in temporary duty travel overseas on official business.” The report says, “she traveled at least seven times to more than ten times.” When overseas Plame traveled undercover, “sometimes in true name and sometimes in alias — but always using cover – whether official or non-official (NOC) — with no ostensible relationship to the CIA.”
I wonder where our little Harriett is this morning? At home, in front of CSpan3 looking at her empty chair? Or at the WH with Little Boots? Or an Undisclosed Location with Cheney?
Gavel down. Sanchez speaking. Miers apparently foregoing this opportunity to appear.
Yeah she got hammered, but didn’t crack. Busholini the Coward is going to get softball batting practice at 10:30. I would love to be wrong. Finally a nice day on the Maine coast, I’m going to the beach!

Linda Sanchez up.
Deeply disappointed that Harriet is a no show.

MSM making me sick. Last week they reported no objectives were met. Today it’s 50%, and no one is talking about the discrepancy.
Often Christy asks: “What do see out there?” Robert Dreyfuss wrote an article “The Shia Fellas” http://www.robertdreyfuss.com/
Often we ask ourselves: “How could anybody invade a country for no reason and think it would be alright?” Robert fills in some of what happened.
No fear congresscritters, forge ahead!
They should issue nothing less than inherent contempt. But we’ll be lucky to get a normal contempt citation.
boxer @ 40
I was wondering that myself…
is Sanchez pulling out the handcuffs?
“Ms. Miers and the WH have chosen a path of confrontation”
rah for Sanchez.
not going to put up with harriet’s shyness, without smacking her & the wh.
He’s not going to comment on anything but Iraq.
On Miers: “I can’t discuss that”.
On Libby:, “I made my decision and I’m standing by it. Next question.”
On EP: “The President needs to be able to have confidential…blah, blah.”
Generally: “The American people need to understand that.”

A question for Bush: Why are there no Bush family members or relatives serving in the military now?
I have wanted this question asked for years but no one ever does ask.
Cannon now disgorging the WH talking points.

Then what…? Party?
Uh-oh, looks like I’m gonna be depressed again today…

Chertoff has a gut feeling, Liebermanns Amendment on the day of two hearings (talk about undermining)
Thats my bet…drumming up support for more aggressive actions towards Iran. Sure was not hard a 97 to 3 vote on Liarmans amendment yesterday.
Hmmmm…interesting. Cannon now doing his opening remarks, and just said that Sampson was responsible for putting the names on the list. New finger-pointing tactic, or just an attempt to lob a softball by the press in attendance who won’t see the difference between writing names down that were given to him versus actually making the decisions as to whose names ought to ultimately be included (which is still the open question)?
From AP today:

Early this a.m. on MSNBC(if I had only known about CNN’s guests, I’d’ve had that on), anyhow, the benchmark project was ridiculed on “Morning Joe,” with the hosts likening it to a telethon: “We need you to call to get those numbers up.”
Thanks you for the parenthetical clarification, Christy, tho I’d say it’s the other FU….
Congress must either cite Miers for contempt or disband.
Cannon sounds like a schoolboy reading off what daddy wrote for him in school
Cannon: blah blah blah sham blah blah blah nothing to see here blah blah blah I don’t really want the truth, I just want you to stop being mean to George Bush and making the GOP look bad blah blah blah.

Same sort of reaction here wrt CNN. Normally the idjit box runs 24/7 and in lieu of throwing the heaviest object I could put my hands on, daymn if the “off” button on the clicker doesn’t still work. Peace, quiet……..gonna have to try this more often. BP just dropped ten points.
It is amazing how Republicans continue to defend this most corrupt and incompetent of Administrations. I say if they want to then Democrats should wrap it around their necks all the way through November 2008.
I’ll leave the Bush pressers to those with stronger stomachs. I just can’t do it anymore, the sound of his voice enrages me. Besides, the Fairly Odd Parents are on.
Thank you Christy…Waiting patiently….
Cannon demanding evidence, otherwise stop wasting his valuable time with this silly hearing.
So Conyers is slappin’ him. goodie!
Sanchez is Chairing the hearing. Conyers up and he is “stunned by Republican Cannon’s opening statement”. Hope he slaps down this fat Republican cultist.

In that case, it’s a clear admission that the R member of the Justice Dept Sampson, committed clear, blatant, prosecutable perjury during his own testimony.
Twisted Martini @ 31
I don’t know about that. Seems she walked right into a trap of her own making by continually asserting Executive privelege and then stating that “I’m unaware if the President was involved in the decision-making process”.
If she doesn’t know of any advice then she can’t assert Executive Privelege that deals eexclusively with issues that relate to the President making decisions. According to her she was unaware of any adviuse…thus she can’t protect OTHERS. She was more than willing to discuss a wide range of conversations with others when, as Conyers pointed out, it assisted the WH case.
Specter gave her the chance to “revise” her comments…but I don’t think that she’ll have much ;atitude on testifying again…simply because she has let the genii out of the bottle. She will have to offer herself up for questions on Rove and others, I think.

Thanks for setting me straight. So are you saying that they would have voted “yea”?
The terror prediction and Libby issues are related by Chertoff “gut feel” and Bush’s “I felt like the sentence was excessive.” Is this now government by bodily sensation? That’s what the early pilots used to call flying by the seat of their pants.
Bushie? That would be suicide both for pilot and passengers on the 747 (or space shuttle) a nuclear US has evolved into since, say, 1930, when “seat of the pants” was still a good way to fly.
Questions for Bush:
Is 66 bigger than 29?
Is 66% bigger than 29%, as in support for the war?
Do Muslims have souls?
Should Americans care if Iraqis die?
Should the unborn, once they are born, get any special treatment?
Do the Constitution provide equal rights to all Americans?

For the love of heaven, that would be helpful – I need some good news here. I’m still thoroughly upset and disgusted about the unanimous Senate vote for that Lieberman amendment. I’m sickened by this prelude to enabling the admin. to attack Iran (let’s call it what it is, shall we?). This is the first time since November (when I decided to give them another chance) that I’ve really had it with the Dem party.
These people know that WE know that this admin. and the neocons are chomping at the bit to attack Iran. WTF with helping them out??? WTF is the matter with you people???
SANCHEZ!
Cannon up – blurg…
Cannon, troll.
Go Sanchez….. Finally.
Cannon is a bloody idiot, just what the goopers like
I’m sure the timing of bush presser was just a coincidence, heh.
Cannon trying to be a wet blanket and wondering if courts will uphold subpoenas. Nothing to see here, move along.
So is Cannon going to deny the prerogatives of the House?
michael chertoff’s gut @ 124
Reminded me of the Oct 2002 War Resolution vote. Next stop Iran!
Cannon: concerned courts won’t uphold subpoena because no evidence of wrongdoing…
(me: is that true??)
fahrender at 107 says”well, Senator Vitter does have a lot of nerve …….”
HA, funny……yes he does, but not as much ‘nerve’ as bob allen from florida……
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/003665.php
Cannon: WH offered to allow Ms Miers to testify/be interviewed. (of course, no transcript and not under oath which he fails to mention)
I love the way Cannon voices his partisan concerns and directives from the WH no doubt, as concern for the institution of the House.
bUSH on the boob tube ,,, please reporter ask him who got the bl*wjob from gukkett (gannon) and impeach dead eye dick and bUSH. now
For some reason i think he’s not leaving in 2009 with the shit he’s pulling, anyone else?
Sanchez just did some wicked foundation pouring. Now to set that concrete!
Cannon talking about *the possibility* of losing in Court – weak argument.
I’m listening to both the HJC and the Bush presser. Stereo BS, who knew?
Cannon didalbert fall @ 111
I think this ispart of a leaked question sheet for employment in any area of Government in the last six years.
Cannon is full of something and it isn’t knowledge.
Cannon is now saying that all this doesn’t matter. The President, (well, this president anyway), should be able to do anything he wants, and the HJC should just worry it’s pretty little head about other things that they can wrap their darling little brains around.
Cannon: I am “terrifically concerned”
Key word: “terrified”
Cannon is such a bullshitter.
Cannon…acting as a concern troll ….yup sure your’e worried about doing oversight…what an arse
Cannon wants to roll over and show his bellie today to avoid rolling over and showing his bellie tomorrow.

Ya poor thing….I hope you don’t have to take to your bed after such a thing!
dmac @ 133
and Bob is a good fund raiser, too …….
Sanchez: If the gentle-eck Cannon shows so much concern for the institution of the House he would want subpoenas to be obeyed.
kathleen at 110 says”Thanks for setting me straight. So are you saying that they would have voted “yea”?”
johnson is our only ally in that bunch…….so, 2/3
So as Leahy and Whitehouse pointed out why does the President need to hide behind exective privilege if he was not involved with the firings?
EEEEEE,
So excited. I see my Rep Hank Johnson sitting next to Conyers!!!
I know, HJC geek am I.
new thread and Christy has it all!
I put up a fresh thread on the Miers hearing.
Kathleen @132: At least some Dems voted against that resolution. I am mortified by the behavior of Carl Levin, who had sense enough to vote against that resolution. Simply mortified!
Geez, look at that empty chair.
Insanity.
Mr Bush, did planning for this war against Iraq start before September 11th 2001?
heeere it comes….
Sanchez asks for a motion.
Conyers: I so move.
Cannon: blah blah blah. worrywrinkles/stutter…
ebidence of criminality? duh whu?… obersite…
wuz highly critical of minority when I wuz majority, bu… bu…. …… omg omg whut ta do?! daddy help.
Conyers just chuckles, & calmly “appreciate the tenor of your remarks; take it as a compliment that you think we are moving more efficiently than in the past…”
“take it or leave it offer you refer to is worthing nothing. we might as well meet in a pub.”
michael chertoff’s gut @ 123
if you haven’t done so already, would you please consider calling a couple of senators this morning to register your views? thank you.
HOW would their power be diminished?
Now I see why he pissed off Ms Sanchez
Cannon is playing for time and as usual trying to muddy the waters.
Sanchez was on a roll and Cannon is merely trying to take her off her game.
Twisted Martini @ 45
Here’s how to explain it.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..Sjhgys0NUE
Iraq hasn’t met a single one of the 18 goals estblished…but in some they were 50% of the goal. So the WH and MSM spin this as “they met “half the goals”. You see, the Iraqi legislature hasn’t even begun debate on the oil bill…but at least the cabinet was able toi barely pass one to send to the legislature. Success!
And the electricity output is about half the day…and oil production is about half the amount exported before Bush invaded. And about half the Iraqi troops have been trained that Bush said were nearly trained back in 2004!
But gotta admit…To say this is progress is like a Yale professor giving a legacy student a B because the kid at least checked out library books for the 20-page term paper that was due last week.
Citizen Jane @ 153
Hank Johnson! I was trying to remember his name.
YeoW! Mr. Cohen is HOT!
Cohen makes me proud to be a Tennesseean!!!
Cohen for Tenn. “an empty chair is contemptous of Congress” the President or Emperor cannot flaunt the law!
A Gary Trudeau cartoon we’re only missing the feather! Priceless
If they don’t send the Marshalls after her ass, I’m throwing in the towel on this Congress.
Keller of Florida an another Republican cultist providing cover for the Emperor.
Good for Sanchez. To Cannon, “You may consider [all you want to], and [meantime we’ll carry on].
Gives the mike to Rep Cohen, who continues eviscerating the “emperor w/ no clothes,” yeehaw.
this getting nasty, but Sanchez maintaining her cool, pretty much.
repug members obviously shaken… stalling…
It’s clear the Republican once again have a coordinated strategy to muddy the waters and stall for time and provide cover for their Leader.
I would ask Bush how many security cameras are installed at the Pentagon. Then I would ask if they are operable. Then I would ask for the 9/11 footage so I can see an AA plane hit the building with my own eyes. We can see people robbing a mini mart but no footage from an attack on our military headquarters. A building that is draped in cameras. Give me a break.
If she doesn’t have a smoking gun what are they trying to hide?
Hank Johnson is up. He’ll stick to the fat Republican cultists on the committee.
There is a new thread
C-Span keeps showing the empty witness chair, with a caption stating that Harriet Miers was supposed to appear as a witness today. heh. very eloquent.
Would have been nice if Cohen had actually used the right reference — Rosemary Woods, not Harriet Woods.
And God am I sick of the argument that executive privilege is necessary for the president to get candid advice. If a presidential advisor is so thin-skinned that he can’t take the heat, what’s he or she doing in the kitchen?
It’s an invented privilege and as such should be construed in the narrowest possible terms. Instead, executive privilege has become the ever-expanding mushroom cloud we should fear.
oh bless his lil pug heart, Rpug Feeney “shocked, just shocked” at these proceedings.. *snerk*

Which sorta makes one wonder how they can invoke Executive Privilege?
How can they allow his aides to discuss things informally and off-the-record when they can’t swear that they are truthful.
It seems really odd that they can discuss privileged information yet can’t do it if they are held to the truth and can fact checked (or the testimony used to establish lies by others?
Didn’t the WH just waive the privilege when the offered to speak behind closed doors?
Has any Dem mentioned that it is already established that a high ranking member of this administration has already been convivted of Perjusry and Obstruction of Justice. The very crimes that this House Committee is investigating. The precendent of this Adminstration has already been proven in a court of law.

Actually uses the pugs’ own snark to skewer them and raise a bit of calming humor with one hand tied behind her back. How’d she do that?! Woo Hoo! She’s a dandy! Sanchez can’t help herself. Smirking behind her hand; Cannon clutching his mug firmly to try to keep from reacting.
Bravo!
repug Franks AZ: agrees with [everyone on our side] because they’re just brilliant, their words pearls of wisdom.
dodge and pony? Usually, it is written “dog and pony,” but dodging the truth that is so apparent to everyone but the Friedman unit is quite a show, too.
