We’re pleased to announce that George Condon and Marcus Stern, two of the co-authors (along with Jerry Kammer and Dean Calbreath) of The Wrong Stuff: The Extraordinary Saga of Randy “Duke” Cunningham, the Most Corrupt Congressman Ever Caught, will be here with us at the Book Salon this coming Sunday, July 15, at 5:00 PM EST/2:00 PM PST.
This is an exciting event!
When we asked around in our group to see who would be best to review the book, our very own Marcy Wheeler just about jumped through her email account to say, “Pick me! Pick me!”
I’m afraid of Marcy, so we picked her. Heh.
Even more to the point, can you think of anyone better, inside or outside our circle of firepups, to help discuss the careful documentation of the “most corrupt congressman ever caught?”
By the way, don’t you luurrve that phrase in the subtitle? These guys sound like, well. . . bloggers. It promises to be a grand old time, so be sure to join us this coming Sunday.
S’gonna be a hoot, and plenty to make your blood boil and expose even further the amazing depth and audacity of corruption that is the modern Republican Party. Mark your calendars!

and I’ve let the folks downstairs know.
they should be here en masse soon enough
Pach, Why on Earth would you be scared of Marcy! She gives credence to ‘The Meek shall Inherit the Earth’ credo, with her spearheading the charge!!! *g*
If Duke Cunningham is headlined as the most corrupt Congressman
ever caught what would Nancy Pelosi’s book title be if she keeps
stonewalling the process of Impeachment and abdicates Congressional Constitutional Authority for the next 18 months?
ever caught SO FAR
OT but watching Tom Andrews on Hardball as he pateintly continues to make his points even while the Ed Rogers/Bush clone tries to talk over him and denigrates his points. Not losing his temper, just continuing to attack and get his message out.
BigMitch @ 7
Yeah, they haven’t nailed your esteemed Sen. Stevens!!! ;-)
Hi Pach
“I’m afraid of Marcy,” you said.
I don’t think you’re the only one.
When are we getting the author of My Pet Goat at the book salon? I hear that Michael Chertoff just presented Shrub with an autographed copy…
Harry Reid: “administration is taking its eye off the ball when it comes to fighting terrorism.”
Should have said, “the administration is incompetent when it comes to fighting terrorism.”
Sam @ 6
Since Speaker Pelosi has an inherent conflict of interest in the Impeachment proceedings, she is proceeding exactly as she should. And since she has not received multi-million dollars in bribes so that she could buy a yacht and live the high life in DC, whatever she is called, it won’t be most corrupt Congressman.
Speaking of Hardball, I really like Shuster. Talk about Hardball!
The subtitle is good, but it needs two more words: “most corrupt congressman ever caught so far.” Last I heard, Abramoff is still singing . . .
I’m going to be gone, so I can’t get in on the discussion, but I am most assuredly going to check out the thread when I get back.
BigMitch @ 13
Yessir!
BigMitch @ 7
You may have faster fingers, Big Mitch, but we’re on the same wavelength.
Ed*ard Teller @ 11
Hi! I was hoping to see you today.
Do you know anything about the text of “My Pet Goat”?
It’s a fascinating story. Seriously.
Elliott @ 10
I have stated here before that those who p*ss off Jane Hamsher, Marcy Wheeler, Christy Hardin Smith, and the other Ladies of the Lake do so at their peril.
Ed*ard Teller @ 11
LOL!!! That will represent the largest tome of Shrub’s Prez Library!!!
“My Pet Goat” is part of a curriculum that is really, really strange.
In a nutshell, teachers are given a script, and the most trivial thing is scripted. The object of the enterprise is that the profession of teaching can be accomplished by anyone who can read the script and administer the texts. It is all vaguely fascistic, and anti-teacher.
I kid you not.
BigMitch @ 18
No, I don’t, but I WILL be worried if W takes a copy with him to Crawford this summer. We had to do lake monitoring today, and I haven’t heard back from my conductor – he might still be in China – so I’ll probably go into town tomorrow. I’ve gotta help the kids get ready to go down to Kasilof for the weekend when they get home from work. 20,000 reds a day coming into the river.
And President George W. Bush has many books in his library. Over half are not fully colored in yet.
Jeebuz! Tweety’s brother is as big an idiot as Tweety is: “He says he’ll listen to his generals and I believe he’ll do exactly that.”
And Ezra Klein smacks that gibberish right down.
BigMitch @ 21
Why do I bet that the script comes directly from Neil’s education company (Education First?)
And when Bushie says, “Congress should shut up and fund our troops”, the dems. should say, “We are not funding the troops, we are funding his war….and that has to end.”
dakine01 @ 19
Beware of the dangerous women.
dakine01 @ 25
And who will star in the movie?
Neil’s Education company, Education First, is a manufacturer of high tech skinner boxes, I believe.
Sam @ 6
Pelosi has stated quite clearly that impeachable offenses have been committed. However, she has determined that there are not enough votes to support impeachment.
The republicans in the Senate and Congress are often corrupt, immoral, and just downright stupid. Three of them running as candidates to replace the shrub don’t even believe in evolution. Many believe in end times and that it will happen within 2 or 3 years. How can one expect such a group of clowns to act responsibly? They will just do what their master wants.
Ed*ard Teller:
Mitch: My uncle was a conductor.”
Ed: Really?
Mitch: Yeah, he was executed at Sing Sing.
Old joke.
Get Tough @ 26
Its easy to do, simple Majority in the House is sufficient, no Senate Filibuster to overcome, nor, any Prez vetoes to overcome!
BigMitch @ 12
And as the editors of the New Yorker would say, “Drop that metaphor!”
Here is an Amazon Review of The Pet Goat:
By A. Piazza “Presidental Scholar” (Indianapolis, IN) – See all my reviews
This is the stuff that makes great men so great. Should be a required reading for leaders of men. Presidential material. I found it so rich and powerful that I had to take seven minutes to reflect and decide what to do next.
Has anyone read this book yet? It was on my list but it only had 1 customer review on Amazon.com, so I haven’t bought it yet. Waiting for more reviews. Anyone?
Keith!
KO in the House!!!
ccmask @ 34
707!
Oh and Keith has a special comment on Chertoff’s gut feeling/gas pains plus Michael Moore.
Pach, have you read it yet? Is there a lot of Darrell Issa exposed?
Sam @ 6
Not fair. Absolutely no comparison.
FYI, new thread
So Bush knows that someone in his administration “did disclose the name” of that person.
Hmmm. Really? Armitage says he didn’t disclose her name didn’t he? Didn’t he just say that Wilson’s wife worked at the CIA. Isn’t that why Novak says he got the name from Who’s Who?
So…who disclosed her name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_instruction
This is a link to wiki article on the controversial teaching method of “The Pet Goat.”
See you guys upstairs. (New thread.)
I can’t wait until Marcy is at FDL Book Salon, interviewing the author of “Uncle Ted – from Bridge to Nowhere to Cell Without a View.”
LS @ 43
No disclosed the name. That is why Novak got it wrong. Her name is Valerie Wilson, not Valerie Plame.
Here’s a little update on the Brent Wilkes case:
The trial is scheduled for Oct 23, but could be delayed.
Judge Burns removed Wilkes high profile attorney, Mark Geragos from the case because Geragos refused to go through a background check that would have allowed him to see classified material.
Geragos had also complained about leaks in the case- especially the impending indictment. There was an investigation by the USAs in Sacramento. They sent a letter to Judge Burns saying that “no further investigation was warranted.”
What I really want to ask Stern and Condon about is the other co-conspirator- Thomas Kontogiannis. That guy is very very mysterious. He got probation for 2 other bribery cases. It looks like he might get off again with no jail time. What’s up with that? Why is this guy so special? Why was his indictment sealed? Why is he screwing his nephew?? This wasn’t a one time thing with the nephew- he was also involved in one of the previous bribery cases but was not charged AFAIK. But I think the nephew was always working at Kontogiannis’ direction. So why has the nephew pleaded “not guilty” Intrigue. I hope Stern and Condon can through some light on this one.
Michael Moore AND a special comment on Chertoff coming up on KO.
Wesley Clark; “I’ve been told that president Bush has done everything that he can do in the past weeks and months to wall himself off from *we* believe is the truth”.
Lovely. Just fuckin’ lovely.
What do you legal minds think about this KagroX diary regarding inherent contempt?:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/7/12/17271/9047
Get Tough @ 16
Actually, the right way to say it is:
“The Bush administration creates terrorism.”
Uh, Marcy Wheeler is not your very own. She blogs for The Next Hurrah and occasionally writes for FDL.
That said, it’ll be a treat to read emptywheel’s review.
Nobody cares about Duke Cunningham now that he’s gone to jail.
The title could be a little better – instead of ending, “The Most Corrupt Congressman Ever Caught” it should be:
“The Most Corrupt Congressman Caught… Yet.”
And it *really* ought to have an epilogue explaining how Carol Lam, who helped bust his ass, got *sacked* by Bush, for doing her job, because the Bush Administration is objectively pro-corruption.
