Shorter Byron York: Conservates are finished with George Bush, not because he trampled the Constitution, expanded executive power at the expense of individuals and the Bill of Rights, lied to the country, waged unnecessary wars, caused thousands of US soldiers’ deaths (foreigners don’t count), destroyed America’s prestige and influence, allowed his VP to run amok, etc., but because he didn’t veto enough spending bills and is suspected of liking Mexicans. The rest of that stuff was okay, so vote Republican.
He also agrees with Frank Rich’ “A Profile in Cowardice,” (Tiimes Select) that conservatives hate Bush because he’s a wienie who wouldn’t stop the Libby prosecution from the start, . . . because their guys should never be prosecuted, especially for patriotic stuff such as helping purge the CIA of truth tellers and starting wars.
Michael Isikoff earns emptywheel’s praise scorn for his skills. File under: fed to the Lioness.
Mr. compassionate conservatism blows it off has a face.
Worst day ever in Iraq? Madness, just madness, just became Mad Max.
If you can’t meet the benchmarks, change them so it still looks like progress. How soon before another WSJ op-ed from Lieberman, McCain, or Lindsey?
Michael Moore makes the industry cry; then he made Digby cry (second half of review), but in a good way. And N=1 gives us reason to cheer.
Glenn catches NYT and Michael Gordon doing it again. But don’t worry, it’s only Iran this time.
David Broder used to care about his country. Wonder what happened?
Don’t believe that global warming stuff; Tucker Carlson show has the truth.
Evangelicals agonize over how much sin to tolerate to avoid a Democratic President.
George Stephanopoulus is suprised anyone mentions impeachment, since only 54% want to impeach Cheney, while 46% are ready to fire Bush. It never ceases to amaze me that the talking heads don’t realize the country is royally fed up with this regime.
White House, fearing influence of Firedoglake [/snarkoff], leaks plans to pretend Iraq withdrawal to NYT.

Caw!
Mornin!
It’s a NED trap!!!!
ralph nader is being interviewed by amy goodman on democracy now!… making a lot of sense about corporate power and how it’s being used in ways that harm us all.
I just love this from Broder
“A particularly virulent strain of populism has made official Washington altogether too responsive to public opinion.”
Its those damn National Health terrorists
congressional hearings weekly update (more here):
1) Subpoenas issued for Sara Taylor by the Senate Judiciary Committee for 10 am Wednesday, July 11th and for Harriet Miers by the House Judiciary Committee for Thursday, July 12th.
2) Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee will consider the Libby matter, “The Use and Misuse of Presidential Clemency Power for Executive Branch Officials“
3) Thursday the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions considered the nomination of James W. Holsinger, Jr to be Surgeon General
Not all congressional committees have yet posted hearing schedules for the week. Check back here for updates, or here for links to all committee schedules.
did i miss anything?
Gross, disgusting, rancid and odious are the only words to describe the present!!!!!!
emptywheel on fire! Wipe your chin, Mikey….
Wow!
nader calls for the repeal of the 1947 taft-hartly law.
he dares any democratic politician to do the same – and says he thinks only kucinich would have the courage to do it.
selise @ 4
Watched this on C-span last week. Ralph is correct in his assessments. Corporations are the threat to America. They control everything, instill needs, that are not real and brainwash those who let themselves be brainwashed. Independent American here who sees the truth.
thanks mods for releasing my comment “congressional hearings weekly update” @ 6, with it’s way too many links to make it through the filters.
selise @ 6
Thanks much Selise, as always. Watching Nader? Do we need to send you to reeducation camp again?
Good morning everyone. Christy found that picture of me in the attic. I was unhappy cause they wouldn’t let me play with firecrackers.
Goo
why??????????????
I put this on the LLN thread but wanted to be sure more firepups saw it:

“WELL! If Rove can talk to the Aspen Institute,
http://www.aspendailynews.com/article_20591
why the f*ck can’t he talk to Congress?
‘Haps some of you with louder voices than I can pass this question to the appropriate people.”

Wrt to emptywheel’s issy meal……….nothin’ left but bones!

Tks so much for schedule posting some of our favorite hearings. Caught part of a rerun of one on emergency health care last nite and the chair (don’t remember his name) was mightly ticked that a couple of shrub’s medicare mouthpieces didn’t show for one set.
Evangelicals worry over how much sin to tolerate to avoid a Democratic president electing someone who might give some of their tax dollars to Negroes.
Fixed your typo, Scarecrow. ;-)
If this were really about morality, the Southern wings of the Baptists and the Evangelical churches wouldn’t be the ones setting the tone for the rest of American Christians. Jerry Falwell and Bob Jones wouldn’t be honored icons.
Nope, this is all about Fear Of The Brown People.
Scarecrow @ 11
nader is giving, imo, the best and most accurate critique of the democratic party. we ignore that critique at our own peril.
disclaimer – that doesn’t mean i want a third party run… i want the dems to wake up and start representing the people instead of corporations and giving us only kabuki.
selise @ 4
One more bloody thing to make us cry.
Honest to goodness Nader should find a hole, crawl in and vanish. He is the epitome of the self serving pr**k if ever there was one. He can rant all he wants about corporate this and corporate that but he did not give a hoot when corporate, through the GOP, help finance his campaign. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/arti…..7J31K1.DTL and here http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRA…..kl.00.html
Good synopsis emptywheel,, and additional comment selise.
We all have been waiting for congress to resume and address the traitorous acts committed last Monday by the Dickster.. er I mean the Scrub..
They were hoping this little commutation indiscretion would lose some steam after a week. Let’s hope it has not
Impeach Cheney first, and then scrub.. or let’s save time and impeach Shrub, Dr. Evil and Abu at the same time..
Good morning,firedogs!
Glad to see that Byron York is still consistent. I had an idea the other day to make buttons for Yearly Kos that said “Better hair than Byron York” to give out to Friends of Firedoglake. Any interest? Somehow, I just don’t think that guy can be ridiculed enough.
Waccamaw @ 13
you are very welcome. don’t forget to click on the link for the longer list.
and please let me know if you see any hearings i should put on the list.

Goo morning!
much to read…
selise @ 17
Ditto Selise……………….
Just read about Rove’s little chat in Aspen. So if he answers questions there, why not in hearings….he wasnt under oath.
A question..If Armitage said Valerie worked at the CIA was that a secret? I thought it was that she was also under cover.
nomolos @ 15 –
haha. yeah, but if all the “self serving pr**ks” had to leave DC, both Ds and Rs would all be gone.
g’mornign everyone
that entire paragraph is ood snark, especially the rest of the sentence but never the less, the republicans HAVE had it with bush…the ONLY reason though is because of him and rove they lost rheir coveted power
NOTHING else matters, if the president had increased their numbers in the last election of course they would be for everything he president is for
ya, big spending supposedly pisses them off NOW but not when it gives entitlements to corporations, then they are fine with big spending
and ‘mexicans” would have been fine too if they didn’t loose in the last elections, a loss they know with no doubt ius because of bush
foreign workers mean cheap labor for corporations and they would have endorsed ANYTHING the president endorsed like the marionettes they were
they are no longer marionettes, the president has cost them their job
as I said, they are only spinning the real reason to hate bush which is
“it’s cause of him we are no longer in power”
which means what I’ve been saying from the very first days of our win
it’s time to deal, these people will do anything and say anything to keep their job and their seat in power…we can deal
we can promise uncontested elections and we can give their state pork…we need to deal and pronto
he didn’t veto ANY spending bills…he gave the republcians whatever they asked for, he gave corporations more then they asked for, he gave people who have more money then they will ever spend all investments the middle class aquired o over generations and then he gave them their kids money and their grandkids money
the republicans OWN “he didn’t veto spending bills”…it was THEIR spending bills he didn’t veto
anyway, we need to find some republicans we can stomach and deal TO REMOVE THE DESPOSTS FOR OFFICE
chun yang @ 19
I wonder if Byron is going to come to YKos again this year. Though scorned in our midst, he toughed it out. Perhaps that was what he considered to be his public service assignment. Much harder than enlisting to fight the battle he cheers others on for doing, I’m sure.
nomolos @ 5
As opposed to being too responsive to K Street and massive infusions of cocktail weenies?
Good morning, Scarecrow:
A Monday morning breakfast of links! Many with ham – all with haggis.
A plea: please give us few progressive healthcare bloggers a look-see. For the past month my blog has been hit with a wingnut nurse and physician spam attack of hate. If you think nurses and docs are all about concern for patients and their welfare, think again; they’re all about maximizing revenue and using patients as a means to their ends. They hate – and I mean the classic definition of hate – those who speak to single payer, universal healthcare and caring being a part of the social contract between them and patients. I finally turned off comments, but if there are other progressives to answer and stand up to the attacks, it would be helpful. As usual, the right is well-organized and has lots of corporate blog sponsors to blast its message. There are few, if any, advertisers on the progressive healthcare blogs.
“Reply: Leftists vent with emotion
Surely those of you who follow The News-Star’s letters section regularly have noticed the difference in the way Republicans and Democrats present their views. Republicans present their position in an orderly and logical manner and also back up the position taken with facts, while most Democrats just list talking points as dictated by the Democrat National Committee — which is now headed by that master of venom, Howard Dean.
Also, instead of writing something that stands alone, they wrap each one with outrageous unsubstantiated personal attacks against the president or whomever they may have on their rotating agenda at the moment.
A classic example of a Democrat on the attack was published July 3 by a Ruston resident who regularly and faithfully follows the party line. His letter was so filled with hateful rhetoric that one could think that if he had his way, all Republicans should be sentenced to face a firing squad.
In my view, his venomous statements had no basis in fact and could easily be proven invalid in a face-to-face confrontation.
I assume the letter writer is a Ruston Huddle House coffee drinker with that other notorious Democrat, Wiley Hilburn. How they can be content to stand with Jesse Jackson, Ted Kennedy and Al Sharpton is hard for me to understand since they both are well educated. It is really sad that people of their abilities can’t see the forest for the trees.
Col. George V. Armstrong (USAF Ret.)
Farmerville”
I know I posted something similar yesterday, but I wanted to continue to show what is still being expressed in small town America (red state rural). This letter to the editor comes from my old home town newspaper (the Monroe NewsStar World). The area’s population is around 150,000. The location is northeast Louisiana. Small, but not insignificant. I’m reaching out to all FDL readers and writers with a request. Send letters daily to refute, submissions may be done online. Make sure the newspaper knows the rest of the country is on a different page. Present your point of view on how the perception of rightwing nuttery hurts that area’s ability to attract business. This works well because all of these places are dying because of their inability to change and grow. Don’t stop with just one paper. Find areas of the country that are red, go online and find their paper, and send them something.
slow and quiet morning at the lake. I wonder what’s brewing below the surface.

Oath, smoath. When did that ever keep ‘em from lying?
No, seriously……..what I meant was, if rove can talk about such subjects to people (ie. not the president), how can he claim executive prev. wrt not talking to Congress?
N=1 -
If you get a chance to run thru’ LLN thread, Mary McCurnin is having health care insurance issues. Don’t know if that’s in your baliwick, but maybe you might be able to provide some advice.
boxer @ 31
wow
this is typical neo con speak
when they say “clean air” bill they mean “dump in your kids air any crap you wnat
when they say “tax deduction” they mean “give rich people all the money and tax the middle class whatever you want”
that entire paragraph is opposite reality but that’s what they do
they say it, their marionettes repeat it and then as far as they’re concerned, since so many people are repeating it, it’s true
the proper response from democrats needs to be a hearty laugh out load…calling them marionettes at the same time
N=1 @ 30
Black sausage and kidneys as well. (and fried tommies)
As one who grew up with National Health care I can attest to the fact that it is more efficient, less costly and, the most important, National Health takes an awful burden away from people such as me… retired and worried as hell.
RevDeb @ 32
I dunno about anyone else, but having just watched that Tucker clip, I’m cleaning Wheaties off the keyboard.
It looks like the Evil Empire and the WSJ have not yet closed the deal.
I agree with Selise at 16.
At one time Democrats were a counterweight to corporate power in this country. That was before they decided to become republican-lite.
Can you imagine JFK, Truman, or LBJ voting in favor of the bankruptcy bill? Can you imagine them selling out American labor on trade deals like NAFTA?
selise @ 9
Can anyone give a quick rundown of what Taft-Hartly is?
RevDeb @ 32
A 60 foot theropod perhaps.
Waccamaw @ 33
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve not “met” Mary, but dmac mentioned her yesterday. I’ll see if I can find her on the thread and have a look to see what assistance I can provide.
N=1 @ 30
Refresh and recheck the links. Hang in there.
If we want to make any REAL changes in this country we need to regain control. Over the past 140 years or so the corporations and their minions have become our dictator. Our political processes (along with our rights and freedoms) have been reduced to panacea in order to distract us from noticing that we have lost power.. We the People.. has become We the Corporations..
We need to neuter these corps(e) and do it now..
RevDeb @ 37
Be nice if the idjits could get their stories straight. ;-) Hell’s bells and codfish, if they can’t get their war memos straight, what can one expect?
jim oconnor @ 38
That’s why the corpo media had to take down Howard Dean and why they had to put him in a position where he could not run again. And the beat goes on.
perris @ 34
The irony of Col. Armstrong. Engaging in the same behavior he condeems. What a shocker!! Republicans reply in a clear and logical manner?!?!?!? I better stop before I spew all over my keyboard.
And while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
RevDeb @ 32
There’s a WaPo article on the transformation of Nancy Pelosi’s leadership — and I’m not sure what to make of it. Too subtle for me.

Isn’t that from American Pie? Sunday Morning had a great segment on him yesterday!
Oooohh, Ken Silverstein on Washington Journal…….don’t know how far into the segment. (wrt the brouhaha he stirred up w/his lobbying article).
OT Ken Silverstein on CSPAN 1 on his Harper’s article on lobbying, like for Turkmenistan
Mojo @ 43
Sorry forgot the LINK to do something about these corpse..
repeal Corps bill of rights
Robert Novak provides more evidence the WH and Hadley have no clue what is happening to their Republican support on Iraq.
Scarecrow @ 48
I heard cookie roberts on NPR this AM quoting, I assume, from the article, and as usual she sounded like a WH shill.
I do like the idea of Cindy Sheehan running against “no impeachment” nancy as frankly most of progressives that I know are absolutely disgusted with her going along to get along attitude.
Does anyone know if the WH sent that letter saying that Taylor can’t testify?
Scarecrow @ 42
Holy
crowcow! Thanks so much. I’ll turn the comments back on and see if anything explodes!Snufalaughagus earned a rather derisive snort from me yesterday when he rather incredulously asked Conyers if he believed the commutation was to keep Libby quiet. What a moron.
nomolos @ 17
I have not flamed Nader recently, but nomolos, you have made me smile rather than cry. I was only going to call Nader a Sock Puppet Troll.
ccmask @ 47
I thought it was- the jester stole his phony crown
Scarecrow @ 12
So what are the chances we will see Sara Taylor and Harriet Miers testifying? Anyone?
Now, now Scarecrow, the Green Folk were really helpful to the Lamont campaign.
N=1 Is there some reason the Kennedy video doesn’t load? I actually saw it last night and it’s great, but I get a “no longer available” message.
Waccamaw @ 50
Yes it is. I heard it on the radio and it reminded me of Cheney. And Bush.
Oh-I thought it was “thorny”. Like Jesus’s.
Native @ 57
Yeah, I saw that; the good thing is he asked the question, giving Conyers a chance to answer, and the bad thing is how he asked the question. No bias there, nope.
Any reference to Nader brings up “tweedle dee and tweedle dum”. Nader’s absurd campaign point that there was no difference between Bush and Gore. Nader makes me see red, but also makes me weep. He used to be a great hero to me.
Great song..

Frank33 @ 58
Some part of me gets a vicarious pleasure out of watching Nader. So I thank Selise.
Scarecrow @ 61
Nevermind — it’s working now. Thanks for capturing that Live Earth video of RFK Jr.
Byron York has his message wrong. In his screed, he says that Bush pissed his base off by communting Libby’s sentence. I thought the MSM said he did it for his base? I guess that proves that he did it to save his buttsky.
carmen @ 65
Nader is like all the rest.. just has to be on the TeeVee
Nader b. 1934 Winsted CT. Population 7,321 according to 2001 CT. I actually really never been to the Northwestern part of the state, but its supposed to be really beautiful. Someone told me they have bears.
Scarecrow @ 61
Not sure why the vid was pulled but here’s an audio copy of RFKjr at Live Earth
carmen @ 65
i didn’t hear any discussion of that… but, to be fair to nader – he was comparing bush’s campaign rhetoric to gore’s in 2000 – and in many ways he wasn’t incorrect (see nafta).
that said, i voted for gore (in a safe state) – so i’m not trying to justify my own actions… i just think nader gets far too much grief and the dems get far to little. if the dems don’t want nader to be a threat – all they have to do is start representing the people more and corporations less.
Lou Costello @ 72
The video at N=1 is now working. I think it was just turned off with the comments, but it’s back.
Litchfield County: Bears, Nader and Keith Richards Heh.
Good morning from L.A. Thanks for all the links & a great a.m. post, Scarecrow.
TPM Muckraker has a link worth re-posting to an op-ed by a 25 yr. veteran attorney in the DOJ. Quite a read:
Bush Justice is a National Disgrace
Nice video here called Republicans Suck.
I know this is off topic but shouldn’t someone somewhere have been appointed to something while congress was off last week? Recess appointment come out come out wherever you are… or, did Reid do something right?
Scarecrow @ 74
MSN has everything from all Live Earth shows (music and interviews) online for streaming: Live Earth
Josh has a good read up about a DoJ veteran telling it like it is to the Denver Post.
Scarecrow @ 74
i made an mp3, yesterday for another firepup who couldn’t use the youtube. here it is (mp3 2.3MB).
Scarecrow @ 61
Thanks for the heads up….Microsoft claimed it under copyright! I swapped it out for another RFK JR version – just as inspiring!
Marie Roget @ 76
How long before he is fired?
Why Bush Gave Scooter Libby a Pass
Marie Roget @ 76
Whoa. stern.
a cross examination
Oops Keith lives in Weston. Someone told me he lived in Litchfield.
snowbird42 @ 83
Let’s see, what time is it right now in Denver?
From the comments on the Kennedy you-tube
Gore- Kennedy08
Hmmm sounds good
Ah yes, I remember it well.
Cheney and Ollie North.
NYTimes article.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07…..lentz.html
Selise….in light of all the damage that Cheney/Bush have done to this country, I cannot let go of Nader’s role. I think you’re right that our corporate dem’s aren’t much better, but there is and was a huge difference between Gore and Bush.
I also believe that election fraud was a far bigger cause for Bush’s “win” and the Supreme Court’s “selection” than Nader’s role.
snowbird42 @ 83
The question is, does he have something to show Sen. Leahy? If not, it won’t help a lot. We need evidence.
If the folks that run either the WAPO or NYT had a any courage or sense, they would hire emptywheel.
Izzy is no more than the piano player at the cathouse.
Fresh thread, up and running for anyone who wants one…
I saw the Greg Staph show. I am trying to remember whether I heard a rx when Conyers mentioned the “I” word with statistics. Now that I think of it, if he was dangling a teacup on his pinky, it probably would have fallen.
Selise, I wonder if Darth locked himself in his bunker during Live Earth for fear the peasants would get riled up by RFKJr. and storm the Bastille. It’s a rousing speech.
RevDeb @ 91
We can hope he does & contacts Leahy or vice versa. IMO writing that op-ed was an act of tremendous courage since he’s still in DOJ…
RevDeb @ 91
Statements of employees on what it’s like on the inside is evidence. We have to be careful not to become victims of the “smoking gun” notion that somewhere, there’s a written confession if we could only unlock Rove’s Blackberry. This is a trap. The evidence is everywhere and overwhelming. Packaging and repetition.
carmen @ 90
i actually think there’s a huge difference between most of the dems and bush. all i’m saying is that i don’t think anyone knew at that time (2000) just how bad bush would be on issues like torture, nsa spying,… we all did know how much bush was lying about his fiscal policies (thank you paul krugman).
so, i don’t really blame nader… i do blame the dems – especially lieberman, and also in general for running such a pro-corporate campaign. i blame people who voted for bush. i blame people who undermined the electoral process – especially, i blame scotus. and most of all i blame me… i didn’t fly down to FL for the recount, i didn’t organize pro-vote counting rallies… so, imo, nader makes for a convenient scape goat – but the blame really lies elsewhere.
mui @ 94
see you on the barricades!
i really should type up a transcription of it today. so many great lines and great thoughts. inspiring… wish for all to hear it.
jim oconnor @ 38
Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal organized the government into an entity that countered corporate “Big Business” power and influence over policy as well as acted as a counterbalance between business and labor to insure a level playing pitch. Big Business, their minions and appologists have taken a vow to undo everything created in the New Deal agenda.
Political fraud has been the only path to power for the conservative politician, the conservative agenda being a wasteland of publically acceptable ideas, and a bankruptcy of ethics all camoflaged in flags and self-assigned morality. Once Nixon usurped the Republican party, narrowing its base to the conservative right, and selling itself the party of “law and order” to entice an unwary public into surrendering their support for the corporatist’s hidden agenda. Nixon’s attack and breakup of the communications monopoly began the assault on the regulatory authority developed by the New Deal, and provided a windfall for those holding significant portions of stock as well as exposing the stock to significant speculationary pressures in the stock exchanges, mostly to the disadvantage of the smallest shareholders. This began a process that fourty years on has seen the very function of governance gutted to a disfunctionate shell, and the constitution shreaded to meaningless tatters in the process.
Like Humpty Dumpty, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men are not going to re-establish the document as it once was, the people, the perceptions, the education and knowledge that created the document are no longer and todays heirs seldom measure up to their forefathers feats let alone focus of attention, such was the measure of giants.
What will have to be built to replace the founding document must have both a greater inclusiveness of the citizen as the source of authority for power as well as a greater protection from the abuse of governmental as well as economic power. But foremost in importance is the protection necessary above all others, the guaranteed protection of law in the courts. Only on a truely level field at law, is the citizen truely protected. Should the law remain the right of the few, no legal protection can be guaranteed all citizens and eventually this story shall be repeated, I fear.
So much to pick over and all of it like week-old chicken… maybe one piece is worth tasting.
It never ceases to amaze me that everyone looks at elections as if they were betting at a horse race. Only those with the lowest “handicap” are considered “viable”. And how do people who profess to a strict dogma attend to such matters? Marginalization
“Conservatives” cant’ find anyone in “the frontrunners” who can meet all of their criteria for faith and family so they’ll pick the lesser of “evils”.
If they, and I might poke a few fingers at “progressives” as well in this case, would look a little “lower on the totem pole” they may find someone they are more “in tune with”.
Heaven forbid people of faith would apply some or people with “heart” would look into them.
Sorry!
