I understand that starting this week, Harry Reid is going to get tough and push for legislation that really will get us the hell out of Iraq.
One thing that I hope doesn’t happen is for anyone to get fooled by the bogus bill S. 1545, the “Iraq Study Group Recommendations Implementation Act” being floated by oh-so-”maverick” Republicans like Robert Bennett (R-Utah) and DINOs like Mark Pryor and Ken Salazar. This bill, which DailyKos frontpager mcjoan accurately calls The Salazar Distraction, sets unmeetable conditions for the withdrawal of US troops, thus guaranteeing we stay in Iraq forever while the “maverick Republicans” get to have it both ways: They can tell their constituents they voted for withdrawal when in fact they voted against it.
Of course, we all know that there will be big, big pressure on Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to back this bogosity simply because it’s “bipartisan” and because, y’know, Broderella wouldn’t like it if they raised their voices. [UPDATE: And sure enough, that's exactly how ABC News this evening handled the sucker: As a nice bipartisan solution that avoided the icky extreme of, y'know, actually setting a real deadline that would bring the troops home.] Your job is to push back against this bullshit.
Contact your Congresscritters and tell them to stop with the shell games. We’ll accept no substitute for total and genuine withdrawal — and that S. 1545 ain’t it:

Am I first this fine evening?
second?
It would seem so.
Next
I would guess so
Do you think Nancy and Harry would support Salazar?
depends on who made the TV spot
Watching a thing on 60 min.s about Social Security, and medicare.
Loo Hoo. @ 6
they better not
Are those chocolate shells?
Elliot, I would think that they have staff people who read these bills very carefully. But I will make calls tomorrow, fer sure.
I’m just so happy that Schumer and Leahy have discussed having a chat with Fitz…
Do you think, that they can maneuver around grand jury protected information?
argosfalcon @ 12
You can hear him at C&L, the sixth story down:
http://www.crooksandliars.com/
Loo Hoo. @ 11
I just put the capital switchboard number in my phone, dunno why I didn’t do that before
And I’m soo wishing and hoping that they call Fitz — and use lhp’s research to get to the Grand Jury testimony.
Ordinarily I wouldn’t want to violate the sanctity of the Grand Jury, but this is different.
argosfalcon @ 12
I’ve got my fingers crossed
N=1 @ 10
Dunno, but I enjoyed your comments at Digby re Sicko, and have bookmarked your excellent website.
What are your thoughts on the up coming attempts , to get info out of the WH next week?
Loo Hoo. @ 13
thanks, didn’t see Face the Nation this morning.
Schumer said at least twice that Fitz couldn’t talk about the Grand Jury.
but they’ll read lhp and get to it.
As to Senator Reid. For me the jury is still out. Talk, talk talk. I would actually like to see some real results from my party. I mean it’s been almost nine months since the last election.
TP has Leahy and Conyers both.

I wonder if anyone ever did a study on how long it takes overcome the inertia in politics?
argosfalcon @ 21
It took the Right 40 years to get us here. Is that a hint?
Tony Blair pressed ahead with the invasion of Iraq without betraying any uncertainty to even his closest colleagues, all of whom had “severe moments of doubt”, his former communications chief, Alastair Campbell, reveals today.
Mr Campbell records how one of Mr Blair’s staunchest allies, John Reid, and the deputy prime minister, John Prescott, looked “physically sick” when cabinet met on the day before the Commons vote to endorse the war.
Ed*ard Teller @ 16
Thanks so much! For the past month, almost all of the blog traffic has come from a sustained spam attack from wingnutters made up of nurses and physicians. It was so bad – threats, ridicule, contempt and gutter speak – that I turned comments off – and in the process – lost all of them on the blog. I’m hoping that more people will pick up on progressive healthcare bloggers so we few aren’t lone voices in the wilderness! *g*
So about three generations more or less.
First of all, will Bush even sign the Salazar Bill? He’s shown no inclination to do anything recommended by the ISG.
Second of all, presented with this bill, Bush will probably order yet another Surge, to 200,000. That this will constructively break our armed forces matters not to him.
Third (and I am repeating myself, but it must be said again and again):
Anything of interest in the anticipated end of week document dump?
I wish I had the skill to blog about healthcare but, I’m lucky to make a few words make sense.
Miami Herald
argosfalcon @ 21
It took an achingly long time to overcome inertia in the Vietnam era.
Margot @ 30
So true, and so much waste and pain in between.
argosfalcon @ 12
Just remember, Shrub and Shooter didn’t talk to the Grand Jury.
argosfalcon @ 28
There are so many facets to healthcare issues, that you really can choose to blog about any part of it, and it will be helpful to others. For example, the income disparity gap is causing more and more of those who do have insurance to still deny themselves care because of the rising and unaffordable out-of-pocket first dollar costs. Others find that they can’t eat fresh fruits and vegetables and still stay within the money they have to spend on food. Still more are losing their homes due to healthcare costs – the leading cause of personal bankruptcy. So when Bush crows about the economy – he’s crowing about the healthcare insurance industry’s profits to investors – not about those who need and use healthcare services. Hope you’ll stick your toe in the blogging water – we need more to write about it!
Right now my party should be harvesting huge poll numbers. Instead the Democratic party is disliked even more than the lunatic in the Oval Office. Gawd, what does it take Dems?

N=1 @ 33
Well I would but as I live it its hard to separate the insight from the outrage, or walking down pity road. All which spoil the message, when your drowning its hard to describe the experence.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 34
Do you really believe that?
I hope not.
Elliott @ 18
schumer said they could ask him about his interview with bush/cheney since that didn’t happen before the grand jury.
Elliott @ 36
I read some thing today about wanting to throwing type writers by Hunter Thomson after Ford pardoned Nixon, tho not not recommended was a fun read.
demi @ 38
I ‘believe’ that’s what the polls say. And as a matter of fact I really, really do think most Americans are fed up with both political parties. ;0)
As to how long it will take to turn things around, a therapist once told me that it usually takes about half the time of a realtionship, that’s ended, to get over it. And, I’ve found that to be true.
Also, when we’ve messed up other things in our lives, like letting the kitchen go to hell (not me of course, ha), a takes a long while to get back to really clean.
With our current mess in the WH, I would say it’s also dependant on who we elect next. Really, really important. It’s why I’m looking at Edwards right now.
argosfalcon @ 25
Actually no. About one (to get back to sane). The Right had to fight from behind – they had to use all kinds of tricks to get Americans to think that everything they believed was wrong. Their only natural advantage is that they’re politically highly motivated (driven to compete). Most of us on the Left aren’t – a much smaller proportion of natural activists. Until we get pissed. And we.are.pissed.
OTOH, those about to give up because Democrats haven’t made everything better in 6 months should get a clue – political change is a very, very slow business.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 41
Okay, OK. But, but…waaaaaahhhhhh!
“turn around”
It will probably take twenty years to “turn around” the supreme court- and then only if dems get to pick the next four justices or so.
It will take a generation to turn around world antagonism about the Iraq invasion.
It will only take a few minutes to revers the worst of the clusterfucker’s legislative and administrative decisions- if dems have enough seats to do it.
It may take a generation before the mutual partisan hatred generated by these years diminishes.
Well it is time for a leader, not someone We want to have a beer with, but if you could stand a cup of coffee with them that would be great but not necessary.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 41
I don’t think that’s what the polls really say. I think they say we’re disappointed in our leadership in Congress. In the “who handles X better” type polls, Dems are still way ahead.
I found this on Cheney through digby
The Darksider
I enjoyed reading it.
Hi demi… ;0)
WASHINGTON – As President Bush attempts to revive the controversial immigration reform bill he supports, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that Republicans are abandoning the president, which has dropped his job-approval rating below 30 percent — his lowest mark ever in the survey.
But he isn’t the only one whose support is on the decline in the poll. Congress’ approval rating has plummeted eight points, bringing it below even Bush’s. And just one in five believe the country is on the right track, which is the lowest number on this question in nearly 15 years.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19209733/
n-1 you need to hook up with mary mccurnin……..she’s on facebook….she travels around speaking about healthcare…….you two need to meet up……she’s usually on late nite…….and she writes deeply touching poetry……
GordonM @ 43
Well thats more hopeful, I always thought that years of abuse and neglect take longer to repair, but once the movement to make it right begins health begins change can make great progress in a short time.
The latest polls on Congress (and Bush) were shortly after the Iraq vote, which pissed off people like us, and the immigration vote, which pissed off another group.

Oklahoma kiddo @ 34
You know the answer as well as anyone else.
It takes 60 votes.
And we ain’t got ‘em.
Manage your expectations.
“Manage your expectations.” I love a good lecturing. ;0)
margot, from an earlier thread………another commenter and i want your mexican lime chicken soup recipe…….just sayin’……..
The Clusterfuckers understand the weaknesses of the american people- and pander to em.
Americans have no attention to detail- they are wishful thinkers- they are gullible- they are suspicious of others they don’t understand- and they are fearful….
Bush presses EVERY SINGLE button.
burnspbesq @ 53
Well it took over 70 million years for dinosaurs to turn in to birds, my be 10 million to turn horses for house cat size to Clydesdale. Lets hope it does not take that long to get 60 votes.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 19
So many of us don’t get where the guy is coming from. His constituents are behind him so he can get tough and we stand behind him. He hasn’t paid attention to us. Who is going to vote him in but us? Please, Harry Reid, pay attention to your constituents. Heed our calls.
I notice on some vital issues, some Democrats do not vote with their party.
rwcole @ 56
I can just see the smirk on his face as he does it
I’ve been reading “Terrorist” by Updike this afternoon- great book by a great writer.
burnspbesq @ 53
If impeachment by the House expands the power and scope of investigative machinery into abuse of power in the Libby commutation, I am all for it. Then let the Senate decide to convict based on the findings.
Right now, Bush commuting Libby’s sentence appears to have opened a big door of opportunity. Before last week I wouldn’t have imagined it, but today it feels as if impeachment could be just around the corner. Patrick Fitzgerald before Senate Judiciary? I won’t be getting much work done if that happens.
.
Americans are terrified that brown people are gonna come and get em—politicians who gain access to that fear can do about anything they want.
“Brown people are gonna take yer jobs, rape your women, steal yer money, blow up your homes, murder your children, and then get welfare”!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 54
Funny, if I balk at getting lectured I get jumped on like a mofo.
I was wondering did anyone ever read Eric Hoffer’s book called the “True believer” published in 1951, I have gone back to it from time to time, have seen some themes that are more than similar, but more modern and works must be around.

Coming in late and OT:
Hi honey, we’re home.
The Central Texas firepups are coming home from their picnic. It was at Gnome de Plume’s secret and lovely island in the exquisite spring fed Comal River. I was mesmerized by the bubbles coming up in the crystal clear water. We swam (some of us). In addition to Gnome and myself it was Dakine01, TexB, Pandagon’s Amanda and YellowDogJim. And we were also joined by Mr. Gnome de Plume.
We did a whole lot of laughing. And TexB took pictures which I’m sure she’ll post. And…she brought unvirtual desserts. It was really fun and heartwarming getting to meet and get to know everyone.
I’d like to see some detail following up on the “disapproval of congress” poll. How about some information on the parties and the issues? Reaction to bills that have been passed? Bills favored by dems but blocked by repubs? Reaction to the hearings? Blanket disapproval of congress doesn’t say much, and certainly shouldn’t be construed as disapproval of dems.
raven @ 65
;0)!
Oh, what happened to FDL late last night? The refresh comments went into terminal swirl and anything I tried beyond the home page kicked me out.
argosfalcon @ 66
Haven’t re-read it in a long time, but he said many things about as well as they can be said.
The Republicans and DINO Democrats in Congress keep playing games…while our soldiers keep dying over in Iraq, dying all because Bush, Cheney and Western oil company execs wanted Iraq’s oil. Blood for oil. Blood for oil. Blood for oil.
And the Republicans, DINO Democrats, Bush, Cheney, and all the Western oil company execs’ hands are dripping blood, hands soaked with the blood of all of our dead soldiers and the blood of all those Iraqis who’ve died since they lied America into war in Iraq.
May God have mercy on all their souls…since they’ll never be able to get the blood off their hands.
Loo Hoo. @ 20
Aloha, Y’all!!! This is disturbing news from Conyers:
“On the other hand, John Conyers said today that ‘he would not hold Taylor in contempt and he hoped negotiations with the White House might break the impasse.’ So unless the Senate holds her in contempt, perhaps this will not be the way the dispute is resolved . . .”
Lederman is right, hopefully, Leahy, will step up and swing for the fences!!!
Clusterfuck blocking congress’s attempts to question white house staff- not clusterfuck’s direct aides- for whom he can claim executive privelege- but lower level employees as well. It is apparent that he wants to do a total stonewall- and then run the whole bloody thing through the courts- with any luck he figures that the thing will never be resolved before he leaves office- short timer mentality.

Since you are talking about some of the phonies that present themselves as dem supporters when it comes to the war, PLEASE- Please don’t forget to onclude that master liar and war criminal – good ole Arnold!
I personally don’t believe a word that bastard says. Today, he showed his true colors when he showed up on wolfies show. He, the liar, was so clear that it was embarassing. Once again, attempting to take the high road, he spewed forth that brilliant, supposedly statesman like statement regarding his position that “we” would all benefit from agreeing to meet the chimps position with regards to rove, mier etal. – no transcript, no oath and the rest of the bullsihit!

Pack up all your dishes
Make note of all good wishes
Say goodby to the landlord for me
That sum-bitch has always bored me
Throw out them old LA papers
And that moldy box of vanilla wafers
Adios to all this concrete
Gonna get me some dirt road back street
[Chorus]
If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway
Without getting killed or caught
Down that road in a cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain’t bought bought bought
If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway
Here’s to you old skinny Dennis
Only one I think I will miss
I can hear them old bass men singing
Sweet and low like a gift you’d bring in
Play it for me just one more time now
Got to give it all we can now
I beleive everything your saying
Just keep on keep on playing
Chorus
Put the pink slip in the mailbox
Leave the key in the old front door lock
They will find it likely as not
With all the things that we have forgot
Oh Susanna now don’t you cry, babe
Love’s a gift that’s surely handmade
We’ve got something to believe in
Before you know it’s time we’re leavin’

Well, y’all tell us when you’re coming back and we’ll just see what we can do.
With “Executive Oil” in the White House and Congress being bribed with money from the energy lobby the American People and the People of Iraq do not stand a chance against the corporate slime of the world. We would not be in Iraq but for oil and the American people now realize that this fanfare is for EXXON MOBILE and their bottom line, profitable of late. They care not for the lives of Americans or Iraqis. Corporate Oil and Executive Oil will destroy America and our Constitution if the American people permit it. Independence for Iraq? “W” you and Chebby sound like the King(s) of England during America’s colonial period. the colonies are there to aid in the manifest destiny conquest for the Crown(s) of England.. The reality is “Executive Oil” is continuing the same exploitative policy of the Brits for the black energy. The difference today is that the fear instilled to justify war is not from Communism, but now “terrorist.” Terrorist from “Iraq” that attacked the US with our own planes, correct “w?” Terrorist that had nukes and planned to use them on US. Joe Wilson is correct in his assesment that the Libby pardon is continued obstruction. Dennis reintroduce those articles and Patrick cut these slimeballs at the knees before they strike Iran, like snakes backed into a corner
Listening to the logic of Scooters supporters comparing him to a US GI in Iraq is sickening. These bastards are war criminals, point men for corporate oil who has more in common with tobacco and death than they do the US Constitution and life.

That’s where we started with Nixon: contempt of Congress. Just, this time, no pardons, please. Throw the $%^&*s in jail instead.
(A friend wants to know: if Bushco is jailed for crimes, would the Secret Service provide protection for them while inside?)

That was ridiculous how little play to the real issues like the rape of the economy by BushCo’s tax plans, war plans and general corruption and how much of a focus there was on how were going to spend too much on Medicare and Social Security.
We would be in half way decent shape if we didn’t have a corrupt regime in power. We are now facing the same fate and the third world cleptocracies of the 90’s.

Jane — it works! You gonna pass along the secret of how to do it?
Good piece, PhoenixWoman!!!
With the wheels coming off in Iraq, by the DAY, the warpimps are finding their inner “bipartisan” selves.
Shorter repubs-to-dems:
“The Turks have massed 140,000 troops and a shitload of Armor on their border with northern Iraq. Will you guys, pleasegod, help us cobble up some ass-covering legislation.?”
Two sentences from the NY Times half-page op-ed piece yesterday:
“It is frightening clear that Mr. Bush’s plan is to stay the course as long as he is president, and dump the mess on his successor.
Whatever his cause was, it is lost.”
And every day, a few more republican rats head for the gangplank.
Are Pelosi and Reid going to say:
“Oh, don’t worry, everyone. They just wanted to go for a stroll on the land.”?
I hope not. I hope they tell them to go piss up a rope.
“Lissen, you assholes; george bush and you CREATED this misery. You need to do TWO thing, and that’s get out in front of the calls to start bringing the troops home NOW, and put YOUR names on legislation to force YOUR president to do it.
Otherwise, you can go shit in your “benchmark” hats, and we’ll watch you stylish wear them, as you twist in the wind.”
“Psssst! The longer you wait, the worse it’s going to be.”
This is a good explanation of why the Salazar legislation is bad:
HUGE PRECONDITIONS TO WITHDRAWL, including reorganization of the Iraqi troops and oil industry; more Iraqi brigades; and security on the ground.
