The past few few days have been chock full of fascinating info about Fred Thompson. Thompson is of course the ungainly actor and undeclared GOP presidential aspirant who smells really nice, at least according to Chris Matthews. And, in fairness, he does sort of bear a resemblance to a gigantic stick of Old Spice deoderant, so Tweety might not be as far out there on this as you’d think.
But anyhow. The way Thompson is being treated by the Elite Media as well as Greater Wingnuttia is instructive, as it tells us something about how these two groups operate not in opposition but according to a self-reinforcing dialectic of mutual lunacy. And it is this dialectic that more than anything else has for the past two decades mired our great nation in this all-sucking swampland of Dumb we’re having so much trouble escaping.
Yesterday we learned from the LA Times that in 1991 Thompson, the old musky lug, did some lobbying for a reproductive rights group:
Fred D. Thompson, who is campaigning for president as an antiabortion Republican, accepted an assignment from a family-planning group to lobby the first Bush White House to ease a controversial abortion restriction, according to a 1991 document and several people familiar with the matter.
A spokesman for the former Tennessee senator denied that Thompson did the lobbying work. But the minutes of a 1991 board meeting of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Assn. say that the group hired Thompson that year.
His task was to urge the administration of President George H. W. Bush to withdraw or relax a rule that barred abortion counseling at clinics that received federal money, according to the records and to people who worked on the matter.
Shazam! You’d suppose that this would be bad news for someone hoping to win the Republican primaries. Kevin Drum thought so, opining that “this is probably just the beginning of ol’ Fred’s troubles. Anyone can look good before the national media starts rooting around and asking touchy questions, but those days are fading fast for Thompson. They always do.” In other words, the “MSM” will keep dredging up stuff like this, and that will show that he’s not as wingnutty as the wingnuts want, and then bang! goes his candidacy.
But not so fast. Tom Hilton goes spelunking in some of the fouler caverns of the Internets and brings back some disturbing news:
At Free Republic, the stories (here and here) play it as a hit piece; a typical Freeper comment is this one:
Hey, LA Slimes! Make that Hildabeast-supporting abortion group show us the billing records. Otherwise, it’s just another lying liberal hit piece done for the Clintons against their strongest competition.
And that’s the problem right there. Because the alternative epistemology of the wingnuts makes it possible for them to simply dismiss any news that comes from mainstream sources, Republican candidates are insulated from bad anything that might hurt them with the base as long as it’s reported in the ‘liberal media’. (If Drudge had reported this, it might get more traction.) Democrats are held accountable for consistency, because on the whole we believe in the existence of objective reality. Wingnuts don’t; they believe that reality bends to Will, that they can create and live in their own wingnut-friendly reality.
Which, unfortunately, seems about right. But it’s even worse than that. The wingnut ability to ignore inconsistency fits hand in glove with the Tweety-level media’s need for simple storylines, and Thompson has already been cast as the Manly-Scented Masculine Hero. Nothing as frail as the facts about Thompson’s record (such as it is) as presented by, you know, journalists, are going to have any effect whatsoever: they will be edited out of the narrative, left on the cutting room floor.
So what happens is that anything potentially negative, however truthful, about Thompson in the media can be regarded as “bias,” while anything positive, like the ridiculous portrayal of him as The Boom King, remains in effect. Observe the response to this bit of fluff from the ever-fluffy New York Times style section:
with the possible candidacy of Fred D. Thompson, the grandfatherly actor and former Republican senator from Tennessee, whose second wife is almost a quarter-century his junior, comes a less palatable inquiry that is spurring debate in Internet chat rooms, on cable television and on talk radio: Is America ready for a president with a trophy wife?
The question may seem sexist, even crass, but serious people — as well as Mr. Thompson’s supporters — have been wrestling with the public reaction to Jeri Kehn Thompson, whose youthfulness, permanent tan and bleached blond hair present a contrast to the 64-year-old man who hopes to win the hearts of the conservative core of the Republican party. Will the so-called values voters accept this union?
That’s stupid, but no stupider, and indeed far less stupid, than a lot of the stuff that the NYT has written about, say, Hillary Clinton, and in the news as opposed to the Style section, even (you can go diving through Bob Somerby’s archives on this question, if you don’t believe me, or can stomach it). But what do the wingnuts say? Prominent right-wing bottom-feeding mouthbreather Hugh Hewitt inveighs from the Townhall fever swamp:
It is an astonishing attack, really, one that tells us –again– that no line of attack on the GOP big three will be left unexplored by the MSM desperate to get a Democrat back into the White House.
But the joke is, of course, that the NYT Style piece is not really an attack at all. No. It’s another entry in the emerging canon of stories about how great it is that Fred Thompson has a penis. See, it was bad that Bill Clinton has a penis, but Thompson? Ay, que macho!
Kevin Drum’s remark that the media will begin digging into Thompson’s background for material that could hurt him with the GOP Base is, unfortunately, mistaken. Any serious story will be tagged as “bias,” of course. But beyond that: the kinds of stories that are likely to emerge are, well, as Andy Sullivan excitedly informs us (via Brilliant at Breakfast):
Outside the extremist, activist base, regular GOP voters turn out to be relatively tolerant when it comes to sexual minorities and private sex lives. They’re not well represented by their party leaders, as far as policy is concerned. This is good news for Fred Thompson. The man has had a colorful and wide-ranging sex life, as I’m sure we will soon find out.
See how this works? The “regular GOP voters” will be able to get their rocks off on these “revelations” at exactly the same time as they slam the hated “MSM” for providing them, and the “MSM” will in turn merrily shovel this stuff down their insatiable gullets. It’s a profitable dynamic for everyone concerned. That is, as long as you’re not concerned that a Thompson presidency would be a disaster piled atop the disaster of the Bush presidency, which was of course enabled by an eerily similar insane dynamic.
In short, the media-beloved GOP frontrunners will apparently always get to have their cock, and we’ll just have to eat it, too.
(With all that said, Paddy at Cliff Schecter’s place is completely correct.)

Thompson looks and acts like a thug.
Whoops! Forgot the link to Tom Hilton at No More Mister Nice Blog up there — should see it now.
So what about Patient Less Than Zero claiming that Fred’s a Big Ol’ Mo ?
Fred is a Watergate conspiritor.
Is there an online recording of Nixon saying “Thompson is dumb as Hell”. I would love to here that from Nixon’s own mouth. It would make a great segment for KO. He could have John Dean give the “play by play”
His young girlfriend is hot. 20 years younger. And he’s so ugly. What’s she smoking?

Freddie on Elm Street is a perfect candidate. Name one thing that the NeoCons can object to or not be able to spin under cover.
I see nothing inconsistent with the assertion that he “accepted an assignment from a family-planning group to lobby the first Bush White House to ease a controversial abortion restriction” and his spokesman’s denial that he did the work.
He is notorious for not doing his job.
Andrew Sullivan (as quoted by Thers @ top):
Wide-ranging?
Umm, is Sully trying to tell us something here?
I know there’s a real high ick factor to this, but…
Most of Fred exes (in the photos I’ve seen) appear to be larger-breasted blondes, like his wife. Not exactly a wide range.
Does Fred swing both way? Or does Fred have other proclivities (there’s that ick factor again) that Sully knows about and expects to come out?
There just seems to be something *pointed* in Sully’s use of the adjective ‘wide-ranging. I wonder what he’s getting at.

George, George, George.
She’s Hot? What kind of shallow comment is that? And, why do you need folks here to answer your simian question?
Yeah, and I’m still waiting for someone to tell me something I Don’t know.
Like, what does Cheney/Scooter have on Mr. Bush that’s so scarey he’s willing to trash his so-called legacy?
What? He’s Gay? He has a mental problem. Tell me something I care about.
Nothing is going to ruin my day. My daughter just announced she and her dear beloved are engaged. I love this guy. A Mom’s dream. He’s the one I would select for her so I kept my mouth shut to ensure as little interference as possible. It worked. Not many men would want to marry a woman with three children (one handicapped) and take on that much female energy in one household. Give this guy three cheers – and send him a bottle of vodka.
Seriously, our family is so pleased that he is a part of our family. What a great addition. So easy for me – I didn’t have to birth him. His parents did a fine job rearing him and instilling good wholesome caring values. Three cheers to his parents.
I think the sun has a special lovely glow today.

Such a thug threatening Moore. Sure sounded like a real threat!
What does Thompson say to imprisoning under age people at Guantanamo?
Seeing the pictures of Fred Thompson and his next ex-wife, remind me of the eccentric Englishman’s (Terry-Thomas) comment about American obsessions with “bosoms” in It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
Actually, she’s not that hot. I just think it’s funny that’s she’s young and standing next to him makes him even uglier.
I can’t take him seriously as a candidate.
I became a father (again) in my early forties. I had to think about whether I was being responsible. When my child needs me in her late teens, I will be 7 years older than my father at the time of his passing.
I mention all of this because I have mixed feelings about a 65 year old guy having an infant child, which IIRC, is Fred Thomspon’s situation.
Is it responsible to bring a child into the world, knowing that the odds are against you being able to support that child until he/she is old enough to make it on his own?
A different question is whether or not this is an issue that resonates with people when they consider Thompson, or Dodd.
As I write this, I see my own prejudices showing because in the case of Thompson, I am judgmental and negative and in the case of Dodd, I am not.

Scott Ritter “This capability is now forever lost with the demise of UNMOVIC, proof positive that the real problems confronting the world’s collective peace and security continue to be undermined by an American administration willing to exact any price in order to win cheap political points. Americans rightly measure the cost of the Iraq war in terms of dead and wounded American service members. Some even spare a thought for the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi casualties. But scant few will reflect on the potential harm done to future generations of Americans, and others around the world, as we bid a silent farewell to meaningful arms control.”

Uh, most likely, it’s that Bush authorized the leaking of Valerie Wilson’s status. Presidential authorization to out a CIA asset is something Bush might actually feel embarrassed about, if it became public knowledge.

Photos of Fred and his current wife remind me of HBO’s Big Love character Roman Grant. (He’s the messianic “prophet” and creepy polygamist played by Harry Dean Stanton.) That might not be good for Fred, but it may help Mitt Romney in a weird sort of way.

Of course, this is IMHO, YMMV, but I’m a 46-year-old woman who is naturally suspicious of men who primarily date and/or marry women significantly younger than themselves.
IMHO, YMMV, but somehow, Mr. Thompson will have a hard time attracting the over 40 female voters. Appearance has nothing to do with it. He doesn’t seem — hmm, let me see here — smart.

Busk’s base of 30% won’t believe the media nomatter what we say and that should be enough to swing a Republican Primary. The danger is if our base thinks Thompson is a moderate because of this story.
This is a reverse of the usual Republican play of inciting hate with “Macaca” comments to private base/loser gatherings and then praying the normal people never find out about the sick things you said. Bush for example only talks to precreened audiences with no or limited press I for one would love to find out what he says with no press around to stir up his base.
Fred playing the reverse of this play is praying that this story does gets out to the normal people and that it softens his image on abortion. He is counting on the base to never hear this story or if they do to discount this story as the Liberal Media trying to get him.
He is afraid because to win the Republican Primary he has to at least appear antiabortion but in the general election the poll numbers are telling him the Republican postion on abortion is a loser. Lying does make flipflopping so easy especially if the sucker wants to believe.
This plan will work in a close race. But how does Fred overcome the war issue that is dragging all the Republicans down?
Help, please.
YMMV=?
Big Mitch @ 24
Thanks Big Mitch.
I adopted my 12 year old and fathered two more at 45 and 48 with a wife 19 years my junior. I bought plenty of life insurance and hope to live to 68 for my daughter’s high school graduation.
My life is pure joy tinged with guilt and I will not judge Thompson for his social position.
However He is another empty suit!
Kathleen @ 37
Daniel Ellsberg has written an interesting article – also for Counterpunch – comparing Vanunu’s situation to Libby’s. Interesting, especially in that Ellsberg, Vanunu and Libby all leaked classified information. Ellsberg’s leak changed American perceptions of the Vietnam narrative; Vanunu’s leak changed Israeli and world perception of the strategic narrative in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Both Ellsberg and Vanunu enlightened people with facts. Libby, leaked classified information to confuse and to wreck.
Strategerie @ 45

Yes, there’s that too. But we have no evidence that Bush has ever felt threatened by criminal liability for anything. He’s the President, dammit!
Embarrassment, and the fact that he knows its undeniable grounds for impeachment are the overriding concerns for Bush.
One could argue that concern over impeachment *is* concern over criminal liability — and I’d agree with that assertion — but I suspect Bush himself would not.
.
Steve @ 56
And where can I find one?
Republicans don’t like younger girlfriends. They want a matron.
Ed*ard Teller @ 39
Ritter was all over teevee before the invasion into Iraq talking about what we would not find there. The administration, as well as HRC knew damn well there wasn’t anything to find well before the neocons planned clusterf**k in Iraq ever happened.
Big Mitch @ 50
I love that statement. Grrrrr &*#@! It irks me to no end. Ever hear that said about a man when speaking of the woman as the primary party? Is it a comparison to his intelligence and accomplishments? That ain’t much of a measure. Does that make her the second least brightest bulb on the tree?
QuakerGirl @ 20
Wonderful news! I’m very happy for you and yours QG
Steve @ 44
Again, I have to wonder why any democrats go on Fox News? Brit was clearly pitching for Cannon, and it is always that way. Why don’t the dems refuse to accept these invitations?
GeorgeSimian @ 7
I won’t touch that one.
darkblack @ 47
Fredrick of Hollywood. Brilliant!
Good points. In Anchorage, where Big Mitch lives and I work, this age differential thing came up when a 43-yo state legislator started dating a 19-yo
woman, uh, girl. Before I rant – CONGRATS to QuakerGirl and her family!
Age differential between partners becomes problematical when, as Mitch observes, one has to take into account having babies when one partner will be fairly aged by the time the child reaches adulthood. But each relationship is its own story, and I dislike one-size-fits-all solutions or put-downs in cases where a commenter doesn’t know the story behind how the two people got to this point. Love knows no boundaries…
I think more actors should run for President, but what would be really great is if their characters ran for President, and the actor playing them had to stay in character for the length of his term.
So you wouldn’t vote for William Shatner, but for Captain Kirk. And if you voted for someone like Jack Ryan, if Harrison Ford got shot, Alec Baldwin or Ben Affleck could fill in.
Big Mitch @ 61
Beats me..Four years ago, I was minding my own business and was picked up by a 28 yo. Some how it has worked out.
I totally fail to see what is so heroic about Mordechai Sununu. In may be yet another case of my prejudices showing. As I understand it, he gave away his country’s nuclear secrets and was sent to prison for it.
I went to school with a kid named Mark Sobel. He would tell you that the 18 year sentence was charitable, based on the experiences in his family.
And what did Vanununu accomplish? Did anyone *not* know that Israel was/is a major nuclear power? Is there something wrong with Israel having nukes? Does Israel violate any treaty it signed on this point?
Israel is the only country in the world with an active non-proliferation strategy. It bombs and destroys Iraqi nuclear bomb factory, for which it was roundly criticized. Israel is in Bob Dylan’s sarcastic phrase, a “Neighborhood Bully.”
Read the rest of the lyrics here.
Steve @ 71
How about the other way around? Older women with younger men. See that a lot in Europe. Makes chronological sense.
Big Mitch @ 24
I became a father again in my mid-40s when my older kids were already in their 20s; my oldest son will be 37 in December, my youngest son will be 12 in October.
I sacrifice everything I have to be with my kids and to be available. Altho my ex has custody of the kids, my youngest son is usually with me five days a week, my daughter, who is almost 14, three or four days a week.
If it wasn;t for these younger kids I’d be living in Europe. As it is I’m looking for an apartment in Petersburg, Russia for vacationing and as an escape…you never know. My kids travel with me and they learn from me as I do from them. My little guy has exposed me to quite a vast array of music that I might have missed.
I can’t imagine Thompson being as uninvolved in himself as he’d need to be to be a father as he gets older. We are all set in our ways and young kids have a unique way of unsetting us, if you know what I mean.
I’ve been blessed and I know it and I will do whatever it takes to make sure this country is what it was meant to be for my kids.
selise @ 46
Amen to that!
Even his dingleberries are dusty.
If America turns its lonely eyes to him, we are well into the backside of our empire.
But there’s a silver lining if he wins: he’s lazier, stupider, and more corrupt than Bush. That soft warmness that sex-starved Republican hos crave will wear thin within months.
By the way, in Thomspon’s case, it is not just his trophy wife. There was something, yet undisclosed, with high ick-factor, relating to his first divorce. It may never be disclosed, because his first wife has announced her support for him.
My source? Chris Matthews was blathering on about how Fred is just a regular guy, and when he wanted to interview him, the un-candidate just came and met him in a coffee shop, alone with no notes, and no entourage. Unlike other candidates, he demanded no ground rules, but, “He said I’d rather you didn’t ask me about my divorce.”
Dutifully, Matthews did not.
Thompson’s a loser. But I find all this discussion and judgment of his personal life a little right-wingy.
Veritas78 @ 76
Is that even possible?
Ditto. It is why I continue to be an activist. As for myself I would have returned to some island a long time ago with little means of communication. It would be a simple life. My DNA just isn’t cut that way. My parents gave to their children and grandchildren to their last day, literally. I feel the same way towards my family. Whatever energy I have left goes to them to ensure they have a relatively safe world to live in so they can thrive.
I’ve been blessed and I know it and I will do whatever it takes to make sure this country is what it was meant to be for my kids.

When Bush was nominated in 2000, I told my son: “This is good news. The man has fucked up everything he has ever attempted, and running for President will be no different.” It turns out I was right, as far as I went.
I forgot that his father’s friends bailed him out on every occassion, as they did with the election in 2000. I took solice in the hope that he would be too ineffectual to do too much damage.
Whenever you hear the word “idiot-proof” remember that people consistently under-estimate the idiocy that is out there. And I underestimated the damage Bush could do.

Agreed. To the extent that there’s anything to Sullivan’s speculation about Thompson’s ‘colorful and wide-ranging sex-life’, that would be grounds for the ususal criticism of Republican sexual hypocrisy.
But trash talk about ‘the wife’ strikes me as not a hell of lot different from Republican distractions focusing on Edwards haircuts or the Clintons marriage.
On the other hand, there may be a rough karmic justice in fighting the Republicans with their own sleazy tactics. I’m rather ambivalent about it.

Great post!
My guess is that the wingnuttia and media GOP enablers will consider Fred Thompson’s multiple sex partners and his young trophy wife to be proof that he’s a real, virile man. Winguts love that in a candidate. Oh, Thompson’s a stud who can get laid in his 60s! That surely makes me wanna vote for him.
/gag
I have a feeling Thompson’s lack of campaign skill might give some of the wingnuts some pause. Fred’ll likely misspeak and do a poor job reacting to questions about the issues.
I’m not worried about Fred, nor am I worried about any of the other GOP candidates. I have a feeling that all will pale in comparison to whomever gets the Democratic party nod. The only concern I have is about 3rd party candidates.

Personally, I think the man looks like a direct descendant to The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
What in Hell does anybody see in him, politically or physically?
And just the mere mention of Reagan in any discourse of Thompson tends to simplify and debase the whole thing.
Aspirations such as his obvious correlation between him and Ronnie aren’t worth much the second time around. It sounds like a bad sequel.
THIS is why Fred Thompson scares me, he is Neo-Con Trojan horse. Libby defender and all.
http://susiemadrak.com/2007/07…..ay-gossip/
thanks paddy, i saved it……….
I read Fred Thompson’s bio on Wikipedia last night. What a hack. There’s nothing there that smells fresh or new. He would be worse than Bush because he is reasonably intelligent and very much a beltway insider operator. I can see why republicans are so ga-ga over him though. He’s the wood those termites crave.
Calm down folks….the simple fact is that….
Wingnuts such as the one quoted from FreeperVille are irrelevant. The lil’ shell game Rove’s RoverDogs been playin’ is over.
Fuckin’ over.
Check the polling. Nobody is gonna vote for a Republican. Not now and if we can keep up the pressure not for at least a generation.
Which is worse for Thompson, performing work for an abortion-rights group OR billing for work not performed?
The GOP spooge-swillers in Outer Wingnuttia simply don’t have any understanding of reality. They float along on the swirling waters of the river called Denial.
Really, it comes down to this: voting for any Republican is a vote for continued fraud, lying, waste, mismanagement, and huge environmental messes. Not to mention wars that THEIR kids don’t fight in, but they expect others to die in so they can keep swilling champagne on the private yachts.
So, the answer is simple: do NOT vote Republican. Unfortunately the viable choices are all Democrat, and the Rethugs will bring out the hate-contingents against any Democrat. They always do. I don’t understand why honest people don’t tell these GOP swill mongers to go home.
This is exactly why we ought to ignore evidence of Republican “hypocrisy” and go right for the throat. Would it really be bad that Thompson used to support abortion rights? NO! It’s bad that he abandoned that position, not that he once held it!
So, everyone should just create the narrative that he’s a right-wing nut! Which he is. Give him a double-Guantanamo and send him directly to jail! Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200,000,000!
We can’t expect Wing-nutia to care about consistency. There ought to be a relentless attack on all these Republican scumbags:
“He’ just like another BUSH!” “Do you want another 4 years of Bush?!” “One Bush was bad enough!”
“Thompson says he would have done things differently in Iraq than President Bush, yet he has supported Bush’s war for the last 5 years. In 2005 he even said. . . .” Then hit him with his own quotes supporting the war.
Theme: You can’t trust Republicans because they’re just like Bush.
With Bush mired at about 28% approval or worse, that will be a winning tactic.
Everything the Republican tries to do, say it’s just like Bush.
I have mentioned GWB’s grandfather Prescott one some blogs, but no on seems to want to pick up on it. But there are questions about him that one should ask GWB and other rightwingers what they think about it.
“Bush was a typical New England Republican of his time; as a former banker, he was a pro-business conservative, but held many positions today considered socially moderate. Conservatives distrusted and at times openly opposed him.
Bush was involved with the eugenics promoting American Birth Control League as early as 1942, and served as the treasurer of the first national capital campaign of Planned Parenthood in 1947. Bush was also an early supporter of the United Negro College Fund, serving as chairman of the Connecticut branch in 1951.
From 1947 to 1950, he served as Connecticut Republican finance chairman, and was the Republican candidate for the United States Senate in 1950. One of his opponents at the time, a Republican woman named Vivien Kellems, said that Bush’s nomination was an inside job of political sabotage in favor of William Benton, the Democratic nominee. A columnist in Boston said that Bush “is coming on to be known as President Truman’s Harry Hopkins. Nobody knows Mr. Bush and he hasn’t a Chinaman’s chance.”[1] Bush’s ties with Planned Parenthood also hurt him in heavily Catholic Connecticut, and were the basis of a last-minute campaign in churches by Bush’s opponents; the family vigorously denied the connection, but Bush lost to Benton by only 1,000 votes.”
