Okay, admittedly it’s a bit of a contrarian position, but bear with me.
If you haven’t seen it yet, David Shuster, subbing for Tweety, makes floor wax of Fraud Ajami for comparing Scooter Libby to a “fallen soldier.” He also nails Ajami on all of his usual-suspect attempts at Scooter apologia, making all the counterpoints we usually just wish our in-the-tank talking heads would make. By God, it’s refreshing – Chris Matthews would have just used up the time asking Ajami if he found Hillary Clinton offputting and mannish, and whether he thought Bill would “behave himself.” But I digress.
There are two points in particular I want to hone in on regarding Ajami’s “fallen soldier” metaphor (he spends a lot of time defensively protesting, “It’s just a metaphor! It’s writing!“):
1) Ajami likes to talk about there being other leakers, like Richard Armitage and… Richard Armitage, and laments that Scooter was left all alone to take the fall. I, too, believe that this is a terrible tragic shame. Scooter should indeed not be taking the fall all alone – the other leakers and their puppetmasters should be taking it with him. Of course, Scooter’s lonely fall-taking is entirely of his own manufacture, so my disappointment is not tinged with quite as much sympathy as Fraud Ajami’s.
2) The fallen solder thing. Yes, it’s completely indefensible when you look at it from the perspective of a soldier, or the family or friends of a soldier, or, well, anyone who actually gives a shit about our soldiers. But if you follow that thought to its logical conclusion, you realize that it makes perfect sense from the perspective of the epically self-centered Bush Administration and its defenders, most of whom have never experienced combat.
In fact, the fallen soldier metaphor becomes quite revealing when you ask yourself: If Scooter is a soldier, fighting for BushCo, then who is the enemy? Based on his actions, it can only be their long-time archnemeses, Truth, Justice, and Accountability. Scooter’s selflessness and courage saved Bush and his inner circle from a fate worse than death at the hands of this terrible Axis Of Evil.
So, to sum up: Do not fuck with David Shuster. He will hurt you.
(I have this new fantasy where Dick Cheney books a full hour of propaganda-catapulting and complimentary tongue-bath on Meet The Press, but Timmeh falls unexpectedly ill at the last minute…)

Hey Eli.
This guy unlike so many others isn’t evil incarnate.
It was a metaphor. And he at least is a scholar
who speaks the language and is trying in his own
way to figure things out.
However, he was scheduled to be on the show because
he would reliably put forth the admin pov. And Shuster
who was absolutely en fuego tonight was right to call
him on that, particularly about the hyped connection
between 9/11 and Iraq.
Shuster just nailed him on the idea that yes, Libby alone
was the one who got caught up in the legal system
BECAUSE he was responsible for Obstruction. Of. Justice.
We gotta get this message out there.
Who is the enemy? Well duh, anyone who opposes Bush
and Cheney in their effort to take over the world. Next
hard question?
Hey, msnbc, please please please have Shuster on more often?
He was amazing. And more FROOMKIN. We like.
Dos
Heya, E.G.
isn’t his first name pronounced “fuckwad”?
Hi Eli
delightful post
and your fantasy would be a dream come true.
What qualities would you like to see in the next president?
Thanks, Elliott. The look on his face when he realized it wasn’t his good buddy would be priceless.
The father of the first Navajo soldier killed in action since Vietnam lives right down the street from me. I have seen the pain in his eyes. And he has told me the pain his wife has gone through. So I have no patience whatsoever for boo-hoo Scooter and his friends. They can go to hell.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 7
Honesty, courage, strength, integrity, wit, and a cast-iron hide. And the ability to explain the obvious very, very clearly.
Hey Eli! Great post, and I agree with Elliott @6…
It was refreshing to have Shuster calling Bull Sh*t not only on Ajami but Dan Burton as well. The tag team of Shuster and Debbie Wasserman-Shultz was a joy to behold.
As for your new fantasy: may it go from your keyboard/lips to the ears of the good dog/Goddess/Gaia/(insert name of supreme being of your choice here)…
I was pleased with Mr. Shuster tonight.
Shuster getting the Shooter on Meet the Press;
I’d pay money to see that. At the very least, NBC ought to replace Tweety with Shuster.
Eli @ 8
that’s such a pretty picture
How can Ajami sympathize with Scooter. Lying was Scooter’s choice..
David Shuster — king of all media? In a perfect world!
Hiya, LL!
yellowdogD @ 14
I think KO is more than enough anti-establishment subversion for MSNBC. Look no further than Joey Scar’s selection as Imus’s replacement.
Silly, silly.
“If Scooter is a soldier, fighting for BushCo, then who is the enemy?”
Truth isn’t the enemy. They wouldn’t know truth if it came up and peed on their shoulders.
WE are the enemy. You, me, Jane… the American People.
Hi LL!

Whooie, it was a Journalist’s wet dream, what David did to Fuad, I mean Timmeh would just love to dress down Deadeye in a similar manner!!! (Not!)
FDL will be getting a check from me just for this post. I had just watched Shuster do his thing, and I have to say it is required watching:

I know metaphors. Metaphors are often at the center of my best work on Sunday mornings.
Ajami, on the other hand, seems unclear on the concept. Or perhaps he’s just bad with words.
Take your pick: incompetent as a writer or insensitive as a human being?
Eli @ 21
He’s either illogical or he thinks we are. Since MSM lets him spew his lies let’s just assume it’s him.
questioneverything @ 25
W00t! Thanks a bunch, QE!
Shuster and Froomkin on MSNBC on the same day, almost the same hour. What a treat! GE must have fired the booker by now.

Many thanks!

I mildly disagree with Tweety’s time slot, I think it should be Bowtie’s slot that David should take! Tweety has some redeeming qualities, whereas, Tucker has none!!!
Sally @ 29
Or someone at GE woke up and said “Hey, wait a minute, there’s no one else on cable that’s working this little niche market called ‘Truth, Justice, and Accountability.’ We’d have it all to ourselves . . .”

No. I guarantee you that will never happen.
Eli @ 10
I like that. I don’t want a name. But is there anyone who might potentially become president who would measure up? Again, I am not seeking a name.
Eli @ 35
You’ve got your dreams, and I’ve got mine.
Peterr @ 26
I’ll pick both. If he wants to call scoots a soldier, he needs to define whom and what he is soldiering for. Honestly…
I think this is a key question
Peterr @ 32
Naw, that would be abandoning Neutron Jack Welch’s vision. IIRC, he did brag about having co-opted Punkinhaid and Tweety in the first place.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 36
I wasn’t actually consciously thinking of Algore, but…
I have to believe that Shuster personally knows someone who was either KIA or grievously wounded in Iraq. The anger is close to the surface when he speaks of losses in Iraq.
And Debbie Wasserman-Schultz! A star is born. Democrats: take note. Speak the truth, and don’t let the bad guys interrupt what you are saying.
CTuttle @ 31, a few days ago while channel surfing I noticed Tucker had a tie tie on and his hair was combed. What’s up with that?
Welcome, QuestionEverything! Pleased to make your acquaintance!
hey egregious-
what’s with the well placed rant?
Sally @ 29
GE is awake to the fact that there is a market for this. There is.
And the fact that they didn’t get it til recently means they’re not all that smart.
But they’ll get smart when they realize what our resources are. Tremendous resources, beginning with brains… then, patriotism, yeah, the real thing
Terry Jones nails it.
anyone listening to live earth?
CTuttle @ 31
Evening all.
Tweety has redeeming qualities? What?
Boston1775 @ 45
The thing to bear in mind is, GE dwarfs NBC/MSNBC. Would the additional TV revenue offset the potential lost revenue and tax breaks from a less corporate-friendly government?

Shuster also sat through the entire Libby trial, read the filings, listened to the judge, talked to the jury, and knows exactly what was proved in court.
Ajami, not so much.
After sitting through the whole trial, when confronted with a writer of fiction like Ajami, Shuster probably just had enough.
I know I have.
dmac @ 47
It’s summer. Highest energy time for those of us lucky [?] enough to be bipolar.
CTuttle @ 31
But CTuttle, bowtie’s slot is too early for those of us working on the west coast. I agree that Tweety is far better than bowtie, though.
Shuster is hot and needs to get his due. And it’s not like he’s just showing off for his beautiful new bride, but that may help! :)
The thing to bear in mind is, GE the largest manufacturer and distributor of Weapons of Mass Destruction the world has ever known.
JPL @ 48
Is it on television?
David Ehrenstein @ 46
Can you imagine what the entire Python crew could do with it, working together? The mind boggles.
Peterr @ 54
Remember in the clip, how indignant Ajami was about being lectured about Iraq after having spent so much time there…
egregious @ 42, Debbie Wasserman and Representative Meek often talk to each other on C-Span or C-Span 2 when no one else is there. I love them both.
David Ehrenstein @ 57
Better yet.
We luv David Shuster. He was very respectful of us when we were in the media room at the Libby trial, really knew his shit, realized Dick Cheney was guilty as hell wasn’t afraid to press people with hard questions to that effect. Plus he had Marcy on the show.
He deserves his own show, no doubt about it.

What utter fucking tripe is that? He lost me there.
Loo Hoo. @ 68

Eli, good points, to follow it out logically Shuster should have asked Ajami if the whole lot should have been imprisoned (Ajami’s argument being that poor Scooter was being singled out).
As for Ajami being not quite as bad as the rest of the neo-con cabal, I beg to differ. He presents an “Arab” face to their agenda, putting out on the media the idea that, well, sensible Arabs who speak English and know the terrain “over there” are fully in favor of this program. Useful beyond words in propaganda terms.
BobbyG @ 69
Much like the war against accountability.

That’s good. ;0)
JPL @ 66
Thank you very much.
egregious @ 2
I agree that Ajami was using a metaphor and that it made perfect sense within his framework. Egregious is on to the idea that the “enemy” is us — we are the enemy — because we stand in opposition to the mindset that we are (and ought to be) fighting WWIV against the radical Islamists (their framework, not mine).
Given that, you can view Shuster’s take down as an unfair set up. A more defensible critique of the metaphor would be to challenge its premises and show how truly radical it is, not because it compares to US troops — that’s just the easy critique — but because it assumes implicitly that the rule of law as we understand it does not apply to those defending the VP and Bush. Libby was taken down by the enemy — in this case, the US justice system that says you can’t lie, even to protect the VP. The problem with Ajami’s metaphor is that he posits the rule of law as the enemy, so Libby was morally justified in defying the law, and when it got him, the neocons had a duty to save him.
It’s all perfectly logical — and deeply sick.
OT – there’s still time to get those Happy Birthday cards out to GWB, who turned 61 today. He’s almost a grown-up.

Remember those flying pigs………
Eli, that’s a great read, hits every note I would have thought needed to be hit and comes up with some insight that is so obvious all we can do is drop our jaw and wonder why the point has not been raised as yet
one of my favorite sayings (which I might have coined myself, I don’t know);
“obvious once told”
and so, obvious once told, my bold;
wow, I hadn’t thought of it that way but surely, obvious once told
and this paragraph, again my bold;
indeed…the “enemy” cheney and bush want to blame is actually the CIA…yet they have trouble casting the CIA as the “enemy”…why they are the “law and order” party, they are the promoters of these organizations
we as firedogs know that cheney had contempt for the professionals in the CIA but he is not allowed to make that fact known to the public, it desttroys their image, it exposes the false marketing campaign they’ve spent so much time nurturing.
so they have to make an “unspoken” enemy…the “enemy” has to be the deomcrats…the people that want to “throw a monkey wrench in his ’strategy’.
yet whenever he blames the democrats he is faced with the brutal reality that the public agrees with the democrats and he is chastised for trying to challenge the majority of Amerian’s patriotism
so they are left to leave their “arch nemisis” unnamed.
a great read eliot and my compliments for those insights that are “obvious once told”

Great fantasy but I don’t think Dan Abrams would risk his life and his families lives that way. They would be classified illegal enemy combatants and find themselves lost in the nether world of Cheney’s secret prison system before the second commercial break.
Wednesday KO got to vent, last night Milbank called Tony Snow a putz and tonight Shuster received a green light to call out a couple of guests as being one talking point idiots incapable of honest debate.
Your fantasy may not come true but the winds are shifting at MSNBC.
PS great job on this thread, keep up the good work

Anyone care to hear why I think Lennon was killed when he was?
I certainly agree about Shuster, as I’ve stated before. I just wish someone would point out that so far the only people to pay any price for the indiscretion the gov’t showed when they blatantly blabbed the identity of a CIA undercover officer was Valerie Plame, Joe Wilson and their family. So they are the soldiers left behind without even a the decency of an real apology. Of course, all citizens have paid a price indirectly, since we no longer have the use of her expertise and twenty years of training. It’s a terrible waste!

Hmm…I see your point but not sure I agree. It was a metaphor…and it wasn’t. His “choice” of metaphors attempted to lend Scooter the luster and the heroism of soldiers fighting in Iraq. It was dishonest and allowed Ajami to scurry around in the cracks and call it a metaphor, but those overtones are there despite the fact that he doesn’t want to take responsibility for them.
I read the editorial when it came out as consistent with the keyboard commandos who think they are brave heros by sitting around in their bathrobes, popping klonapin and calling everyone who doesn’t see Islamofascist boogeymen in under the bed traitors. It’s Hugh Hewitt talking about the risks he takes riding the elevator to work every day. It’s a perverse worldview embraced by those who want to feel good about talking tough and letting others do their fighting for them. To squirm out of that by laughing uncomfortably and calling it a “metaphor” ignores the larger context and is, I think, quite dishonest on Ajami’s part.

So if anyone says the American people are not behind impeachment ask them where they get their data.
I bet the Hardball guests today enjoyed the spittle-free environment! But did anyone else get the impression that Dan Froomkin was much lower than Shuster? Dan seemed to be looking up at David, and David down at Dan. (’Fraid I didn’t pay much attention to Milbank…)

For all his faults, I would be interested to see if John McCain would ever employ such a metaphor. He may be a warmonger, but I think he does understand that he is not personally at war with the islamofascists.
I think Ajami’s “fallen soldier” reference is only a metaphor if there aren’t actual fallen soldiers in a current actual war waged by the government for which Irve Libby obstructed justice.

Meet The Press
Cheney: Now, what Saddam represented was somebody who had for 12 years defied the international community, violated 16 U.N. Security Council resolutions, started two wars, produced and used weapons of mass destruction and was deemed by the intelligence community to have resumed his WMD programs when he kicked out the inspectors…
Shuster: Whoa! I’ll have to stop you right there Mr. Cheney
Cheney: Huh?
Shuster: That’s factually incorrect. The weapons inspectors were never kicked out and you know it.
Cheney: stomps off set…
Scooter was well paid for being the designated fall guy. The game plan from the start was for Libby to be the human shield of Cheney and Bush and it worked to perfection. I just wonder how many zero’s were on that check he got for all the suffering he’s had to endure.

I remember reading it when it appeared and thought it was assine to compare Scooter, a convicted felon, to fallen soldiers. Loss of life compared to what should be 30 months in a minimum security prison!? I agree that Scooter should not have been the only one to go down for leaking(WH needs astronaut diaphers) Valerie’s name.

Well, technically speaking, they *were* kicked out. Just… not by Saddam.

A bare majority of voters in favor is not enough to push the Congressional Repubs into doing what they should do. This is one of those instances when the voters have to be in favor of it by 80-20 in order to even come close to getting the Senate to a 67-33 margin.

Lennon could have been the center of an anti-government movement. He had the charisma and the money and the integrity. Reagan’s shadow govt types couldn’t take the chance that scrutiny would be directed at them.
That was part one.
Part two was as a dry run to see if the American people would accept the bullshit of a lone gunman again….so that when the attempted hit was carried out against Reagan it could be claimed that one lone nut was responsible.
America accepted that Mark David Chapman (same meter as Lee Harvey Oswald) was a lone nut. They would accept that John Hinckley (son of a Bush family friend) tried to kill Reagan to impress Jody Foster.
Poppy Bush, Bill “Mumbles” Casey, and Bush’s friends in Team B within the CIA decided to get a message to Reagan early on regarding who would be running the government. The shots in DC were never meant to kill anyone, let alone seriously injure anyone. You might say James Brady was collateral damage they never expected.
Reagan was removed to a hospital where all the mind control experiments the CIA had perfected over the years, all the post-hypnotic suggestions, all the Manchurian candidate tirgger words and techniques were employed to make Ronald Reagan the perfect frontman for Bush and his cabal. At times he would appear cognizant of things but when questioned by Walsh about specific things relating to Iran-Contra he got a blank look in his eyes and denied knowing anything about it.
He even exhibited this behavior at the news conference in October 1986 when he admitted to the basics of the Iran-Contra deals. They told him what to say and he said it.
The Bush cabal was running the government from March 30, 1981 until January, 1993 and Bill Clinton let them get away with it by refusing to authorize hearings into anything the GOP had done while in power the previous 12 years. That sign of bipartisanship was treated as a sign of weakness by the GOP which went after Clinton relentlessly.
So there it is. I have extra tin foil hats here. :)
Condi Rice is an indiscreet Bush whore.

Given that there has not yet been a full airing of the crimes the fact that it is this high is very encouraging. If and when there are real hearing detailing the high crimes and misdemeanors of this administration in the news every night, the balance will tip. The rethugs will realize that if they don’t act shocked and get behind conviction they will loose the independents for another 20 years and will either vote to convict of force the two criminals to resign.

Understood. But I believe the Repubs, especially the House variety are so far gone into their delusions that they can’t recognize how totally out of touch that they are. It’s like the contrast between the Rs on the Senate Judiciary Committee with the ones on the House Judiciary Committee.
On the Senate side, although they are obviously partisan, most of the Rs still are able to express consternation at the activities of Abu and the DoJ. I’m convinced that when AL-VINNN and Todd Graves appeared before the Senate committee, the Rs were NOT there specifically because they knew how bad it would look trying to defend the indefensible.
The House members, however are still throwing up all the smoke screens we’ve come to know and love: “but but but but Clinton!” Al Gore did it too! Sandy Berger Sandy Berger! and so on. Dan Burton tonight on Hardball was just being the norm. Issa, Lundergan, Cannon and all the others are so corrupt and so in need of protection by ChimpCo and Abu that they will go down in flames rather than break and do the right thing.
I saw Charlie Rose interview Ajami about 3 years ago concerning Iraq. Ajami spouted absolute triple-distilled horseshit for 20 minutes, and Charlie just sat there and nodded his head.
Fuck polite discourse. We need more people like Shuster.

Right, but:
1) We only need a simple majority of those voting in the house and in it’s committees.
2) The MSM is starting to desert BushCo and without their cover, the hearings will greatly increase the support and the Clinton Did it Too chorus will start to be ignored.
By then the Senate will have to deal with the weight of the charges and there are enough rethugs who will realize they are dead meat if they cover for BushCo that they will convict.

I think I might be the only person with this take on it, but I believe that the MSM is not so much deserting him as trying to preserve their credibility. They will hew as close to the Republican line as they can get away with without giving the game away, lest they become useless as propaganda outlets.
It’s just that right now, there’s a rather large gap between the Republican line and the minimum credibility requirement.

It will be interesting to see how quickly TradMed rights itself when the grownups return from holiday next week, ES. I tend to agree with you on this one. I mean, Shuster & Froomkin & Milbank, with only that tremulous-voiced Cohen lady from Boston to say, “But the Libby pardon is bad for Hillary.”
Something was off the rails today. But me likey!
Remember Randall Tobias who retired to spend more time with his massage therapist?
snip
INDIANAPOLIS:
Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels began the year with $2.6 million in campaign cash, and campaign spokesman Cam Savage said Daniels had raised at least $710,000 so far this year.
Daniels also has listed multiple contributions of $10,000 or more since Jan. 1. He got $15,000 from Eli Lilly & Co., the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical giant where he once was a top executive.
He also received $25,000 from Randall Tobias, who was chairman and chief executive officer of Lilly during part of Daniels’ tenure.
Tobias abruptly resigned as a U.S. director of foreign aid programs in April after his name surfaced in an investigation into a Washington call-girl ring. Tobias admitted that he hired women from an escort service to come to his Washington condo and give him massages, but has said he did not have sex with the women.
This has probably already been said but here it goes again. Scooter Fibby was the lone fall guy because he LIED well enough to cover up the underlying crimes for his bosses.
Here’s another typical picture of Joe Lieberman.

Unconfirmed Sources:
Washington, DC (Rotters) – In what the White House is describing as a newfound sense of bipartisanship and mercy, President Bush late today issued a full and complete pardon to accused “DC Madame” Deborah Palfrey. After examining thoroughly Ms. Palfrey’s responsibilities to her extended family and business, as well as her ongoing service to the community and the evidence she had presented upon her behalf, the president rendered his judgment that her potential punishment was far too severe for the crimes that she may have theoretically committed, and issued a pre-commutation from any future attempts at prosecution.
Under the terms of the pre-commutation deal, Ms. Palfrey handed over to the White House her controversial phone records which purportedly documented utilization of her “escort services” by very powerful and influential administration officials. The phone records were promptly sealed and classified as top secret “in the interests of national security”.

Never happen. The handful of Democrats on the list will surely outweigh the hundreds of Republicans, at least as far as the media is concerned.
NYY, 14 – LAA, 9 (HR A-Rod)
Anybody seee the Newshour with Jim Lehrer tonight on PBS? As with every friday they have a Point-Counterpoint thingy with conservative NY Time columnist David Brooks.
The conservative guy criticizes Bush for commutation. Says Scoots should have gotten 6 months. But then he mouthes all the usual Republican talking points. (Mark Shields wiped the floor with him.)
He goes on to say that the Democratic party is to the Republican party as the Major Leagues are to the Minors. Why? “The Democrats are on the aggressive, are on the offensive, they’re mobilized, they’re angry, they are mobilized and the Republicans are the exact opposite.”
“The president bitterly regrets not embracing the Iraq Study Group.”
And this is the conservative guy!
But the Dem got the best line of the evening. What will happen if America withdraws from Iraq? Answer: “Iraq will be over-run by Iraqis.”

Who is the enemy? Bush was engaged in a war with CIA over intelligence. Bush lied about the intelligence. When it started to come out that Bush had lied, Bush outed Valerie Plame as a message to STFU or Bush would out the rest of them.
Libby’s job was to protect Bush and Cheney and it still is. For his loyal service Libby will down the road be given a book contract, media job or think tank position that will make him a millionaire. This is raw hardball power politics the way Bush and Rove play it.
Pardon my ignorance, and pardon my for asking for a pardon, but what does EPU mean as in Epuville or used as a transitive verb?
King Rex Requests your Presence … Late Nite is served …
Epuvbille is a place you don’t want to be.
Eli @ 194
Yeah, they’re jockeying for audience and trying to satisfy management pressure to be as far right as possible. With CNN’s total abdication of sanity, looks like MSNBC will be the most reasonable. But even KO is stuck with a format that really only lets him do 2 or maybe 3 real stories a day.
Profit is not their motive – it was their excuse to turn right. But why bother to be on the air if you don’t have an audience? Expect either a total makeover of CNN sometime in the next couple years, or a sale.
Evil Parallel Universe waa a commenter here who used to have his comments stranded at the end of thread while everyone had moved on to the new thread. It got shortened to EPU and to be EPU’ed was to post a comment on an old thread after a new thread had started as is what is occurring to me right now.
my understanding of epu is that it derived from
a person whose nick is evil parallel universe. this person often posts at the end of a thread, when most ppl have already left to go on to the next thread.

1. I think that the reason they waged war on Valerie Wilson is very simple. Cheney misread the Wilson artilce in the NYT and thought it said that he had sent Joe Wilson to Niger. (Wilson never claimed this.) With that misaprehension, he had no answer to why he didn’t know that there was no justification for the 16 words, which he vetted. So he had to discredit the idea that he had sent Wilson. Therefore, he came up with the incredible story that the trip was a junket that Valerie Wilson had arranged for her husband, and striclty an inside-the-CIA mission.
Proof? You want proof? Well you still here repugs with the talking point that Wilson is a liar. But I have never heard him called out on a specific lie, other than the one he did not utter: that Cheney sent him.
As to the idea that Scooter will get a book deal and become a millionaire, Scooter is from a VERY wealthy family and he could afford to write a check for $250,000 without breaking a sweat. Succinctly put, money is not an issue for him.
Thanks for explaining EPU. I thought it was just an artifact of being the Westernmost American on the post. Anchorage, Alaska.

Hi from probably the easternmost. They bent the time zone to get me in (downeast Maine).
Eli,
Nice piece: glad to see you are making your way in the world so nicely, young man :)
Thanks, DWD! Good to see ya!
We should start a campaign to get reptilian war crimes fan John Yoo to make a statement, or write an op-ed, or whatever, on the same “Libby as fallen soldier” theme. Then he can go on Hardball, with David Schuster substituting to defend himself. Shuster can fucking decimate him like he did this idiot from Johns Hopkins. How do people like this, who don’t think logically much less morally, get employed? It’s absolutely astounding.
ccmask @ 216
That was hilarious. Thanks for the good laugh.
Every time I hear somebody else tell me “All Americans are idiots!” I’ll have to quote the latest poll approving impeachment for Bush & Cheney. This is an incredible development, and something our backward Congress is going to be slow to appreciate and act on. But it’s beginning to have that exhiliarating feel of inevitability – a historic shift that cannot be stopped, even by a corrupt Congress and lying rat-bastards B&C (thanks, Mike Malloy). Congress will ultimately act to save their asses; pray it’s in time to avoid too many more horrors.
PeteCO @ 49
He certainly has a healthy supply of saliva. Does that count?
In fact, the fallen soldier metaphor becomes quite revealing when you ask yourself: If Scooter is a soldier, fighting for BushCo, then who is the enemy? Based on his actions, it can only be their long-time archnemeses, Truth, Justice, and Accountability.
Y’know, I’d love to be able to think that the Bush Administration’s self-chosen enemies were that abstract and general. It’d allow me to feel a heck of a lot safer, for one thing. But it’s just not something I retain enough dewiness to continue to believe. I’ve come to think (due mostly to the Bush Administration’s actions) that BushCo’s “enemy” is not “Truth, Justice, and Accountability” (while typing that I almost had a vision of three carytids standing on a plinth) but—all of us. Everyone and anyone who is not a member or a cer-tan-teed ally of the BushCo club, can’t be vouched for by one of their buddies, is not sympatico with their tactics, does not share their goals. Which would include, alas, by far the greater number of the American people.
We did not win the lottery when these folks wormed their way into power. We’ll be paying the price for having failed to unseat them for a long time to come. Nothing good will come of Bush’s term in office. You mark my words.
Has anyone mentioned that Armitage didn’t lie about what he said to Novakula? When push came to shove, he ‘fessed up.
Unlike Scooter.
To paraphrase Marcy Wheeler, when push came to shove, Scooter lied.
ajami’s arguments are beyond nonsensical. i can’t believe people take this guy seriously! what an intellectual lightweight! his basic point seems to be that “scooter” libby shouldn’t be punished due to the fact that the iraq war was started with the support of some democrats. now, this guy in the same breath will say that libby’s case has nothing to do with iraq. huh? also, the thing to do when someone is convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury and lying to the fbi is nothing, because there’s a chance that other people did too??? is that really an argument at all? that doesn’t even pass the laugh test. what a crock. dick cheney and george bush asked scooter libby to lie for them and he did. and for libby to serve in jail, would be to take away his life, as if he had been killed in iraq. this is a convoluted series of arguments to try to piece together. i mean, none of it makes sense. shuster did a great job in the interview, but i wanted to hear him ask if he really thinks that people convicted of crimes should be exonerated due to the fact that other people might also be committing those crimes. how does one even begin to try to justify this point of view? ajami just kept repeating himself, he made no point. a great interview overall i’d say, because often people can come on chris matthews’ various shows, make no point what so ever, and he simply doesn’t have the info on hand to counter their baseless arguments. that’s what seems great about shuster, he came off as if he were prepared to deal with republican lies and obfuscation. what a difference preparation makes!
Elliott @ 15
The look on Ajami’s face when ha realized that Shuster wasn’t going to be his good buddy was priceless.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again MSNBC should replace Matthews with Shuster. Then and only then would we really have HARDBALL.
Yeah, David Shuster!!!!
“People who talk in metaphors wax my zipper”
I am going to take a minority view somewhat. I admit to liking every second of what David Shuster did on air. He bullied him the way Billo bullies his guests, and he deliverately went after and made an example of a major mouthpiece of the warmongers. It’s about time.
It’s on cable. It’s entertainment. It’s Tweety’s alleged “Hardball” show where all watchers suffer the soft bigotry of low expectations anyway.
But somehow, I don’t think bulldozing is the right way to go. I’ll tell you something else. I suspect making Shuster a rising star on “Hardball” is just the beginning of General Electric’s refashioning of its media-style in anticipation of 2008. In otherwords, they are using Shuster to re-package their corporate influence. Shuster may be a fine reporter and an excellent on-air personality; but that does not preclude him from being used by the mainstream media giant. It would not surprise me to see him paired more often with Tweety as time goes on, and then ease Tweety out of his chair over two year period. Repolarizing. Realigning. Is that a good thing?
David Shuster at his very best! Impressive! Some of the best “hardball” that I have witnessed played in a long time. Go Shuster!
How in the hell can anyone compare one the pushers (Libby) of this unnecesary and immoral war to one of the soldiers that Libby helped send to their deaths based on lies?
Shuster was serious and on fire. Thanks for taking your job seriously David!
Ajami article
http://www.foreignaffairs.org/…..uture.html
If Aoud said or wrote that Scooter is a fallen soldier, then that is a simile, not a metaphor. Scooter’s proven lies and the people who required them are DDT-laden eagles: nothing new will be hatched for democracy ever.
