This just hit my in-box. It’s a surprise, given the red tape runaround that had initially ensued on this, and I thought that our DC-area readers would appreciate the heads up:
I’ve got some exciting news: With the help of our friends at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, “Mother Earth,” a Live Earth-affiliated event, is coming to Washington D.C. tomorrow.
If we want to show our elected leaders that Americans want real action to solve the climate crisis—nothing will make that more clear than thousands of people joining me at the concert tomorrow morning.
I’ll be there at 10:30 a.m. and then some special friends of mine, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, will each perform a song and the classic blues band Blues Nation will take the stage. The day will also feature Native American rock, funk, punk, reggae, gospel and Andean music in addition to films.
Be sure to arrive early—you won’t want to miss the opening acts.
Event Details: A FREE 7/7/07 concert near the Capitol
When: Tomorrow, Saturday, at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Outdoors on the National Museum of the American Indian’s Welcome Plaza at 4th Street and Independence Avenue SW, facing the U.S. Capitol.
Sounds like it will be a great event – free concerts and shows supporting smarter environmental policy – and the more people who are there to support it, the better for all of us.
(YouTube of Garth Brooks singing “We Shall Be Free.”)
UPDATE: For those wondering about the Republican roadblocks to the initial attempts to schedule the concert in DC, the WaPo has a bit of information on that score.

Yes!
Christy!
I’ll be there.
Cool, I’ll watch via teevee at a moveon gettogether in my neighborhood.
Have fun Christy and all.
Just why everything that is taking place in the states, Ameicans going to music concerts, Diane Rehms discussing what is taking place in Iraq with her quest from a safe studio, FDLers blogging about Libby, Americans taking vacations and going to malls while close to a million Iraqi people have died, millions are displaced who knows how many are injured as a direct result of the pre-emptive and illegal invasion of their country by U.S. is oh so disturbing and “sicko”!
Kathleen at 6 — I won’t be there — we have a house full of company still, and I don’t live anywhere near DC. But I thought folks would like a heads up given how much trouble Al Gore and the Live Earth folks went through to get anything going in or near DC.
Kathleen @ 6
Get over yourself.

Raven no need to attack I did not say anything about myself. You are so silly
Diane Rehm just announced that it is the Dali Lama’s birthday.
If Buddhist celebrate birthdays how old would the Dali Lama be if you were to count all his lifetimes?
20,ooo years old?
For those going to the concert, be sure to go in the museum as well. It’s an incredible experience.

hmmmm….from his onscreen persona I can think of several adjectives to describe Mr. Raven, but silly isn’t one of them.

Raven generally pops up to attack!
kathleen — On Sealed v. Sealed, nothing has changed since I wrote this the last time someone asked:
Unless and until some concrete information shows up about the case, all mentioning does is raise more unsubstantiated speculation about unproven innuendo that has never been linked up to any evidence whatsoever that I have ever seen from any independent, credible, substantiated and cross-checked sourcing.
Shorter me: no.
And, while I am thinking of it, I’ve had a very long, very exhausting week, and I still have a house full of company. So please, for my sake, let’s be kind to each other and enjoy the fact that it is Friday. What do you say?

As we approach the 2008 election season (some say we’re in it already), interesting bit about US voters in The New Yorker:
Christy Hardin Smith @ 30
garsh
Here are some numbers that won’t improve Ol Clusterfuck’s digestion- from ARG:
A new American Research Group national survey of 1,100 adults (conducted 7/3 through 7/5) finds:
31% of approve of “President George W. Bush commuting the 30-month prison sentence of I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby while leaving intact Mr. Libby’s conviction for perjury and obstruction of justice in the CIA leak case;” 64% disapprove.
11% favor a complete presidential pardon for Libby; 84% oppose.
45% favor “the US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush;” 46% oppose.
54% favor “US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Vice President Dick Cheney;” 40% oppose.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 30
that was one of my adjectives…. :)
Biodun @ 31
Thanks for providing this. That rings true for me. I find it difficult to get my arms around many of the issues. The media isn’t a ready source of factual and accurate information. And the implications of what legislation does and how it impacts is nigh unto impossible to figure out.
How can that be improved? Blogs are good, but require a lot of reading, sifting for validity and reliability, etc. Are there better sources of that kind of information available to the mass public, and not just the blogging public?

Score one for democracy. The wingnuts failed to stop the concert after all. We’ll support the Meadowlands ,NJ concert. Hope it’s a blowout.
The latest Tom Tomorrow ‘This Modern World‘ needs its own FDL entry. Not JUST because it’s hilariously funny, as usual, but because it shows what the Democratic Party OUGHT to be doing: anticipating the typical lame-ass responses that the “think thanks” will distribute, and preparing counters for every one of them.
I plan to carry copies of this strip in my wallet, and when I am faced with these responses I will simply take the strip out, hand it to whoever I’m addressing, and ask them to get back to me with something that doesn’t constitute a lame logical fallacy.
And how bout a silly iPhone song/vid.
Petrocelli at 40 — She’s doing really well, actually — we’ve tried to keep her as close to her regular schedule as we can. Our company will be here another week and a half, so it’s a good thing to keep her on as even a keel as we can manage — for her sake, and everyone else’s as well. *g*
N=1 @ 36:
These days, knowing what’s going on, and understanding the issues, requires some form of research because of all the copious (mis)information available offline and online.
Biodun at 16 — Sure, feel free. (Just spotted your comment. Am reading and making lunch at the same time…)
Just a reminder, Pat Leahy is having a get togther at his place. You are all invited to come. Dress is causal.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 44
You can all take turns running her around until she gets tuckered out and goes to bed … be warned … this does not work for kids over 10 … they have limitless energy … *g*
AZ Matt @ 47
Dress is causal… heh heh … excellent !
Re: Us voters:
Here’s the paragraph before the one I cited above from The New Yorker:
Biodun @ 31
This is so true. I think the Republican party has played to this fundamental ignorance of politics in the US. How to start changing it?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 46
I assumed it was fine. As you can see, I’ve already gone ahead without your kind permission…*g*
And on the 24th of July, we get a return engagement of Mr. Ableberto(I Can’t Recall) Gonzales, aka Gonzo, at Pat Leahy’s FunRoom!
Fred @ 12
Neat map. One suggestion for them: the map needs to have ‘carbon/pollution per capita’ to really show usage patterns. TX has nearly three times as much pollution, per person, as CA, which I think is interesting. (Alaska is something of an outlier, because of location and climate.)
AZ Matt @ 47
I thought Fielding was refusing to allow Sara Taylor to testify. Didn’t he include her in the executive privilige letter?
AZ Matt @ 53
Can we send Whitehouse some Lozenges … just to make sure his throat is in working order ?!! *g*
AZ Matt @ 47
I don’t think so. Fred says no
See page 3, second full paragraph. Bush is claiming Executive Privlege for both Taylor and Miers.
Well Pat Leahy says Sara Taylor is the Guest of Honor so if she don’t show the fur will really start to fly I think. It is called giving the WH enough rope to hang themselves.
It’s great that they’re doing that concert there. I don’t live in DC but it’s a great opportunity.
I also want to encourage other DC, VA, MD people to join the protests there. We really need to stop blogging and get into the streets.
I also want to encourage all of us to do this too.
I think the time is RIPE for IMPEACHMENT parties, don’t you?
Chrisy and Jane, TRex, Emptywheel and all of you, couldn’t we have thread headers about people who have brought their protests to the street? There are so many people who deserve to be honored in my neck of the woods. They have protest every day at 5 pm in A2 and the organizers come prepared with signs and so on… And the MAP and CAP offer protest every Sunday at 12 noon bringing signs too.
I wonder if FDL could arrange days to surround our local offices days. Or to dress up like Republicans and swarm our local media. Maybe when the new Harry Potter is released, we could have a “Harry Potter for Impeachment” day.
Whatever the idea, wouldn’t it be great to find local ways to build momentum?
So being ‘nice’ on Friday does not apply to Raven?
O Christy, you shocked me the other day when you wrote that constituents to be represented were those who had voted for the elected person. Perhaps that is the great difference between the US and democracies. In democracies “constituents” are everybody in the voting district for whomever they voted or did not vote or whether they are even registered. I believe the OED bears me out in that definition.

ALBUQUERQUE Rep. John Doolittle, a conservative California congressman, today joined others in his party rapidly deserting the president on the Iraq war.

Guess that means Doolittle isn’t getting paid anymore.
In Indianapolis, there’s a Motion sometimes made by lawyers: for a continuance based on the Rule in Shelley’s Case. (Shelley’s Case is an old, old Property Law case and, quite frankly, I don’t remember what it’s about). Here, it means, “hey Judge, everything’s worked out already, but I haven’t been paid yet – can ya help a brother out?”
In other words, I’m thinking that maybe Doolittle is now turning against the war based upon the Rule in Shelley’s Case.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — After more than five years of increasingly intense warfare, the conflict in Afghanistan reached a grim milestone in the first half of this year: U.S. troops and their NATO allies killed more civilians than insurgents did, according to several independent tallies.
The upsurge in deaths at the hands of Western forces has been driven by Taliban tactics as well as by actions of the American military and its allies
Wonder how many coal-fired KwH will get consumed at the concert?
Problematic.
We are in deep shit, climatologically. And with respect to sustainability more generally (we will likely be consuming 2x the planet’s annual carrying capacity by 2050).
Biodun @ 32
One of the big polling houses admits that around 6% of the answers they get on any topic are just random. On issues that directly affect them (economy, say), answers are pretty sensible. But when you ask about abstract policy or political questions, even people who have heard about it will generally give the answer they last heard from someone they admire. The others will try to answer as though it were a test – they will look for clues in the phrasing as to what the “right” answer is.

Let’s see her get behind unionizing the guards at Indian Point in Westchester County and then let’s see her itemized plan for reforming the NLRB and instituting the ideas that were behind the original ILO before anyone thinks she’ll be anything but anti-worker, anti-labor.
I’m sure her big corporate donors spewed their coffee when they read that little gem of disinformation.
Just how does she propose revitalizing the educational system to educate people in how to be workers instead of button pushers or mouse-clickers?

Did the RISC have something to do with the Rule Againt Perpetuities? That’s the one where a conveyance of property has to vest within 21 years of “a life in being” at the time. Or something like that. I just remember that the life in being thing used to confuse the hell out of me.
Can they put Sara Taylor in jail if she doesn’t come testify?
Has anyone thought of the ultimate irony that Fitz may argue that the rule of law requires no probation in the circumstances and Libby arguing “yes please give me some probation i want it please.” And that Libby may in fact get off with no punishment at all?
I am seriously beginning to feel like a ten pin, knocked down again and again by the Bush bowling balls that keep coming down the alley. No amount of investigation is ever going to get to the cr*ppiness of this administration.

I think Americans are the most egregious at disconnecting all the parts of life that make up the whole as though they are unrelated. Politics is life. The food we eat is politics, the water we drink is politics, the air we breathe is politics. I know of nothing more integrated and intertwined in life than politics. Yet we hear over and over, “Oh it is just politics.” We treat art the same way. I lived in a culture in Southeast Asia in which the word for life and art were one and the same. They couldn’t understand how we could separate them. Life is art. Art is life. Life is politics. Politics is life.
I’ve just decided to start the world’s simplest movement. Here’s how it works:
1. Take an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, and write “IMPEACH” on it with a big marker. Write large, so it fills the whole page.
2. Tape it to the rear window of your car.
If you have extra energy left over, make a bunch more and carry them around to hand out or tape up places.

When Hillary says “labor friendly” is she referring to labor leaders coming from the rank and file or labor leaders who hobnob with the corporate bosses? I need to know because this statement can go either way and I want to know who stands behind that statement. Mobsters are die-hard capitalists with bottom-line self-interest. What labor leaders does she admire most and why? Who does she see in the forefront of labor today?

Regarding impeachment. Winning isn’t everything. It’s how we play the game that’s important.
On a lighter note: Part II:
E. J. Dionne has a decent post today. He does not quite say the pardon is obstruction of justice, but almost. Dionne even makes nice with bloggers.
————————-
Notice the pattern: When the heat was on in the CIA leak case, Bush issued a strong pledge to fire anybody involved in leaking. He didn’t. When Libby was indicted, Bush ducked comment until Libby was at prison’s door. Now, by keeping Libby free, Bush can conveniently postpone a full pardon until after the 2008 election. In the meantime, Libby has no incentive to tell prosecutors anything new about what happened in this case. As liberal blogs have noted, since he was not pardoned outright, he can use the pending appeal of his conviction to avoid testifying before Congress.

TribeScribe and all — Please don’t post incredibly long comments. It trips the filters because they think you are a scroll troll, and your comment has to be backed out manually. Thanks.
Christy, that’s disappointing to hear.
Please read what I wrote.
Every word.
TribeScribe at 124 — I’ll read it when I get a chance (see note above about house full of company). But I don’t see why it is unfortunate that we try and keep the comments from from scroll trolling considering that has shut down other sites entirely. You are free to make your point in a concise manner — what I’m saying is, you shouldn’t post a long post like that and expect someone to be able to pull it out of mod instantaneously — because that can’t always be done — and I wanted to forewarn everyone that may be a problem, given that we don’t have infinite resources and lately comments have been getting really long from some quarters.
Consider it a helpful hint — and don’t come griping to me if your long comments get stuck if you don’t take it. ;-)
Christy, with all due respect to your house full of guests,
Maybe the real hint is that the comments
are getting longer because there is more to say
regarding potential direction and action to take.
I don’t care if the comment hangs for the
fraction of additional attention required for
discernment.
I stand by my suggestions,
born of my experience as a unifier of diverse interests
born of my experience as a project manager
born of attention to my fellow citizens
born of my sincerity and convictions
and if valid-though-complex suggestions
will be met with reprobation for not being
a sound bite or for not toeing the line of technicality, then I will reconsider offering
my insights to FDL to accept as a constituent.
Perhaps someone else will be interested.
Sorry it wasn’t a soundbyte.
My aim was to potentiate a wave of productive
strategizing and activity.
I come from a systems view. To wit:
Listen to and take action on the suggestions and
the length of the comments will no longer be a concern.
