Dear Progressive Protest Organizers:
Forget the twenty-foot-high puppets. If you REALLY want to make an impact, PowerPoints and Brooks Brothers suits are much better, as the Yes Men showed us yet again.
Pretending to be representatives of an Exxon/Mobil subsidiary named “Vivolium”, Yes Men activists Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonnano managed to not only con their way into the Gas and Oil Exposition 2007 in Calgary, but also tricked the Expo’s organizers — which include members of Dick Cheney’s and George W. Bush’s buddies in the National Petroleum Council — into letting them the keynote luncheon address on the final day of the event.
I’ll let Wired.com’s Brandon Keim take it from here:
The NPC, which is led by former Exxon-Mobil CEO Lee Raymond, advises the White House on gas and oil issues. They were expected to announce the findings of a Raymond-chaired study, commissioned by the Department of Energy, on joint US-Canadian energy policy.
Instead, attendees of the day’s $45.00 keynote luncheon were addressed by the Yes Men’s Andy Bichlbaum, who identified himself as an NPC representative named Shepard Wolff.
After noting that current energy policies will likely lead to “huge global calamities” and disrupt oil supplies, Wolff told the audience “that in the worst case scenario, the oil industry could “keep fuel flowing” by transforming the billions of people who die into oil,” said a Yes Men press release.
Yes Man Mike Bonnano, posing as an Exxon representative named Florian Osenberg, added that “With more fossil fuels comes a greater chance of disaster, but that means more feedstock for Vivoleum. Fuel will continue to flow for those of us left.”
And the beauty of this? The Expo’s organizers and attendees didn’t catch on right away that they were being spoofed. (Though to be fair to them, it really must have been hard to notice: The “Vivoleum” presentation, if it were legit, wouldn’t be too far in spirit from the Enron employees mocking the California grannies who were dying because they couldn’t afford to run their air conditioning back in the summer of 2001.)
Sure, they felt a little uneasy when Bichlbaum and Bonnano led them in lighting Vivoleum candles allegedly made from a former Exxon janitor who died after cleaning a toxic spill. But it took the mock video of the janitor professing his desire to have his body rendered into candles to get one of the conference organizers to yank the Yes Men from the podium.
And even as they were being led away, they stayed in character:
As security guards led Bonanno from the room, Bichlbaum told reporters that “Without oil we could no longer produce or transport food, and most of humanity would starve. That would be a tragedy, but at least all those bodies could be turned into fuel for the rest of us.”
Noting that “150,000 people already die from climate-change related effects every year,” he added, “That’s only going to go up – maybe way, way up. Will it all go to waste? That would be cruel.”
This, my friends, takes brains. But more importantly, it takes discipline and courage.
We’re talking about something that has to be planned weeks, if not months, in advance. We’re talking about something that requires a good knowledge of the M.O. of one’s quarry. We’re talking about something that requires not just adoption of temporary camouflage appropriate to the setting, but the ability to go into and the self-discipline to remain in a character that’s plausible enough to fool some very sharp cookies.
This, my friends, is true brilliance.
The conference organizers and attendees are probably inured to people with puppets by now. Their limousines whisk them past the people waving signs outside so fast that the protesters are all just a blur that’s quickly forgotten once they’re safely inside the hall.
I don’t think that anyone at the conference that day will ever forget what the Yes Men did. Ever.

Right On, PW!!!
Dick Tuck lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:o) :o) :o)
Too hilarious!! Kinda scary that the audience would entertain the idea, if even for part of it!!
Geez! Talk about your Guerilla theatre! Hats off in admiration.
That was absolutely magnificent! I loved the ‘candle’ tribute!!! lol!!!
Marvelous!!!
Think how many candles you could make with Lee Raymond alone.
I’m feeling EPU’d, so I am reposting this:masaccio @ 130
Now who didn’t need a real chuckle today?
Thank you, PW!
Gullible Canadians!
Oiylent green, it’s made from people!
Great post, I’ve never heard of these folks before. Keep in mind when engaging in these sort of activities the occasional misdemenor arrest is always a possibility. Elites don’t take it lightly when their corporate fortresses are invaded by protesters. Been there and done that.
And note that Fitzgerald is required to state his views of supervised release on Monday: the perfect opportunity to ask Judge Walton to recognize the changed circumstances and impose the strongest provisions of supervised release, including incarceration up to a year.
The Yes Men have done numerous tricks like this one. I know about a Bhopal prank on behalf of that chemical company I can’t remember the name of as well as a spoof on the radio, broadcast in Europe. They are fantastic!!
Don’t bother clicking on the Vivoleum link. It’s been taken down already. Here’s a related link:

OT::
I just posted some instructional propaganda from Glenn Beck;
The discussion involves President Bush commuting the sentence of a convicted criminal from his own White House
Beck repeats the canards that Washington is broken…. both sides are just as corrupt, the “American People” are fed up with both sides….Democrats just as much to blame for all the problems in the country….Dems can’t do anything in Congress….giggle giggle”
Don’t forget the “poison atmosphere in Washington D.C.”
That’s a classic!

the yes men are great – and they’ve been doing this kind of thing for years. really, really brilliant.
but, why the knock on the puppets? “conference organizers and attendees” aren’t their target anyway. please, no more triangulating! we’re all on the same side.
masaccio @ 12
Win-Win!!! If Scooter sees bars, he’ll start talking! If Shrub pardons Scooter outright, bye-bye Fifth amendment privileges, Scooter has to talk!!! 8-)
Geez, PW! Why didn’t you warn me? I coulda sold my Vivolium stock, and now everyone knows!
EPUed from downstairs:
Thank you Christy, Jane, Marcy, Swopa and many others for providing me with the info I needed to respond to this inane and fact-free letter to the editor that appeared in today’s SF Chronicle:
Before I finished morning coffee I responded with this:
Couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you for your wonderful work. Now where’s that PayPal link…?
Not sure if I’m ready for a costume and pretending piece of activism, but I sure as hell can write letters, make phone calls and show up where needed!
CTutle and masaccio @ 18
… and Bush’s head just might explode too!
Cujo359 @ 15
I think it’s back up – I get this…
Thanks for the related.
Vivoleum!!! Who knew? Too bad Kenny Boy and Bernie Ebbers missed that awesome market opportunity.
newtonusr @ 22
Actually, I was referring to the vivoleum.com link.
For those who haven’t checked it out, it’s a photo essay about the event, and there are a couple of YouTubes at the bottom.
rxbusa@19,
I saw one just like in this mornings Mercury News. Adding insult to injury David Brooks’ latest stupidity was just opposite it. I still have steam coming out my ears and a large bruise on my forehead.
LS – Huh. put another one on the list.
Enjoy the day, pups – im off to dinner and see Sicko. Would love to see audience reaction like that audience in Texas.
Helpless Dancer @ 25
If you haven’t seen it already, check out Larry Johnson’s response:

Cujo359 @ 24
Ahh yes.
“Dear Visitor,
This domain has been killed.
Sincerely,
The Yes Men”
thanks

Soothe your poor heads re: Broder with this lovely balm by David Corn, posted at Larry Johnson’s: here
Kiss net neutrality goodbye
Too funny! Good for the Yes Men!
As expected, and right on cue, driftglass takes Bobo to the woodshed and it leaves a mark. Wow.
My tribute to Vivoleum.
Actually – not. But it was written to commemorate bronzes of sea otter carcasses killed by the oil of the Exxon Valdez. After the Exxon Valdez criminal suit was settled, the Feds had to destroy eleven huge freezer vans full of “evidence” left over from the spill – hundreds of thousands of animals and birds. What awaste. They could have made otter, eagle, seal, sea lion, murrelet…….Vivoleum!
Well done, rxbusa!
Thank you for the link newtonusr, that was wonderful. And the poster…BONUS.
Anyone care to join me in asking Jim Lehrer how much longer the Newshour is going to disgrace itself by providing this partisan a forum for his blather?
How opportune!
We spent part of the day following Iraq Veterans Against the War as they staged guerrilla theatre through the streets of downtown Denver. Six vets in combat gear patrolled the 16th Street Mall, arresting and detaining Iraqi civilians who protested the occupation of their country. Other organisers and volunteers handed out explanatory postcards to the bemused holiday throngs who were shopping or eating lunch at pavement cafes. The reaction was generally positive; people were actually reading the cards and asking questions. Afterwards the IVAW guys gave a press conference on the steps of the federal building where the military recruiting office is located.
Please go here http://gobstruck.blogspot.com/
to see MrsCO’s blog and some pictures of the event.
Helpless Dancer @ 25
Oh! Well then send them my letter! Plagiarism quite welcome! And if you don’t want to, let me know and I will—I only get the Mercury News on weekends and didn’t see it.
Hey all. I haven’t posted here in awhile but FDL has remained a lifeline amidst a chaotic last several weeks.
Right now, I’m visiting up here in Lake Forest/Lake Bluff, a very wealthy and waspy community on the lake north of Chicago. Went to a town 4th of July parade today that winds through the village center and through the neighborhoods. My significant other knows a lot of folks here so we made rounds on the streets. Among all the cookouts, American flags, and face paint, and in conversations with people whom I’ve never met, I was amazed at how much talk there was about Bush’s act to commute Libby’s sentence. Maybe it was triggered by the numerous spoof parade acts with costumes and props that drew attention to the recent incarceration of Hilton, I don’t know. All I can say is that people are pissed as all hell at Bush’s act.
Here I am experiencing a beautiful slice of midwest Americana celebrating our great nation’s independence and undeniably there is a pronounced hum of unanimous disgust being shared about this President. It is striking, really.
I wonder what they’re saying in Peoria.
.
Helpless Dancer @ 30
Thanks for posting that I had NOT heard.
I’ll network it out everywhere I can . .
Bad news indeed . . . . more greed, more profits, more exclusion . . . it’s killin our country.
Muzzy @ 38
Just like the hum we heard before the election in November.
Muzzy @ 38
That is wonderful news! It sounds really spontaneous WITH a good dose of concurrent Paris theatre making connections.
I am praying this IS the tipping point …
OT, but at 7pm, est, C-Span2 will be replaying PatFitz’s commencement address at Amherst College.
It might be a bit speculative at this point, but Vivolium shares may do well in the long run, especially if the slippery and greasy people die first.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. The Yes Men better be careful, they might end up getting a job offer at one of these ‘gigs’.
Fitz at Amherst is really worth catching. You won’t doubt the integrity or sincerity of the man after hearing his comments AND you will dearly wish you could get a job working for him ~ he’s clearly a truly wonderful manager!
larue @ 39
I just emailed Sen. Wyden that article requesting clarification of the threat and expressing my concern about any potential for losing net neutrality.
Wyden put the ‘hold’ on the Telecom bill last fall that threatened to end Net neutrality.

Kathryn in MA @ 26
Do you mean Hugh. Hugh’s list? or LS-Huh. :)
PunchPrincess @ 42
Even those of us who have never played rugby should be downloading this commencement, if in the spirit of Patrick Henry.
OT-
It’s raining like hell in New York metro area and there are tornado watches up for the area outside Philly.
If a tornado rips through Independence Hall and takes out the Liberty Bell, do you think Bush would consider that a sign from God that she ain’t too happy with the direction of the country and the condition of the rule of law?
Crazy Horse @ 47
Thanks Crazy Horse.
james @ 48
Naw. He would see it as confirmation that he is on the right course.
Talking points that need to be refuted:
No underlying crime.
Armitage sole leaker.
Joe Wilson liar.
Valerie Wilson not covert.
We need to keep pointing out bigtime that the talking points put out by the Administration that call Wilson a liar, and repeat over and over on the fake news shows, that there was no underlying crime to obstruct, are precisely the method of operation of the Administration in the original crime and an overt continuation of the conspiracy to out a covert CIA agent; citing Katie O’Bierne and Novak, etc. The conspiracy (the underlying crime) is still ongoing, and it involves the press to this day. This is outrageous. The truth is that there was (past tense) no underlying crime; there IS an underlying crime still to this day, the same damn crime.
Mary McCurnin @ 50
It’s not what God thinks now, but a hundred years from now.
Isn’t false propaganda during a war, somehow a crime?
We’re smoking brisket, chicken on a can, and brats, potato salad, and yellow squash from the garden (the first one’s I ever grew), and we’re having fireworks tonight.
What’s on the menu???
Cheeseburgers
Elliott @ 55
I love cheesburgers!!
chocolate cake
LS ~ I think ANY propaganda is ALWAYS a crime! Just another quaint americanism that is not longer considered important.
Are you on Facebook?
LS @ 56

Laura Doty @ 61
steaks, that would be nice, too!
Since they did a keynote address, they may have also been comped the convention fees, and maybe motel stay as well. Ha, ha.
Elliott @ 59
I am. Hmmmm….Chocolate cake…sigh…
I love German Chocolate cake. I also love yellow cake with chocolate frosting…
Our block party was canceled cause it is 103 out in Sac. Expected to be 106 or more by six. Damn global warming.
I’m going to the old in and out burger right now cause I want something other than the tofu in the frig.

Cheers Mui!!! All things pass.
Laura Doty @ 70

LS @ 66
well why don’t you befriend me?
thanks, but just got a little worse ;)
LS @ 51
Ongoing furtherance of a criminal conspiracy to obstruct justice in a federal investigation of the betrayal of a national security asset in a time of war, directed and covered-up from the Oval Office.
Mary McCurnin @ 67
sorry to hear about the block party :(
Bad news on our 4th of July. 6 Canadian killed in Afghanistan. Oh Canada.
Laura Doty @ 70
LOL, turned upside down! (Psst-Why not the Mother-in-Law, I have some extra bamboo skewers!)
Elliott @ 73
I thought I did!
Grilled shrimp with mango salsa over here.
Mary – sheesh. sorry to hear it’s so unbearably hot there.
THANKYOU LS and CTuttle
I’ve wondered for ages…but kept thinking I’d get it eventually.
Re: skewers…if I were having the Scootster over, I’d used them. AND the grill!
LS @ 66
not me, but some people like peanut butter icing on their chocolate cake.
how ’bout seven-minute icing on devilsfood?
What’s your FB name?
Mary McCurnin @ 67
I remember those hot – fry eggs on the street, 4th of July’s…as a kid. Wait till dark…watermelon and sparklers..
TeddySanFran @ 75
Short and concise, Teddy!!! Alas, too long for a bumper sticker!!! 8-(
Re: Bumper Sticker:
Scooter Lied for their Sins.
Laura Doty @ 81
Scooterburgers and Bushburgers…would you like some Cheney on your burgers…Cheneyburgers.
LS @ 86
they’d have to be flame-broiled!
Elliott @ 82
LS – but I haven’t written anything there yet.
Siun is upstairs!
Magnificent!!
I’m almost speechless with admiration. Combined with Millenaryman’s activities at Independence Hall, which he described in the last thread, this kind of tactic might mark the formation of a more effective toolkit for taking protest public, at least at the stage of building a critical mass. Takes lots of logistics, though, as PW pointed out.
Regarding the “no underlying crime” tp: Something about Fitz’s sand-in-the-eyes metaphor just struck me yesterday. The umpire is responsible for the play where s/he is (Cheney: ’safe’ or ‘out’), and as the play comes that way, doesn’t need to worry about other plays from, say, the last inning, or some other ballgame that might be showing on the stadium tv (Armitage).
prostratedragon @ 90
Fitz is a brilliant prosecutor with tons of patience. His words were chosen with precision. You can bet on it.
Just a quick drive-by to say Happy 4th to everyone. All love to the Yes Men-if you want to see something else they did that’s truly hysterical, read here about the SurvivaBall.
My entry in today’s food-gasm is: Roast Chicken and Yellow Rice, with black beans, peas, and 7-layer salad. Peach cobbler for dessert. May the day find all of you well, and on the first day of the path that leads to the rebirth of the Republic.
Excellent!
That’s the way…uh huh, uh huh… I like it… uh huh, uh huh!!!!! Rock on Yes Men!!! Rock on Phoenix Woman!! :D
Chocolate cake is to some the root cause of a diadem of purification that can transform the unctious taste of a marvelous criterion. If cake be thy will then let thy cake eat itself!
Amazing and hilarious. It works in Canada, but probably shouldn’t be attempted in the USA, because Homeland Security will figure out a way to call this a threat and toss the Yes Men into jail without access to lawyers.
Laura Doty @ 52
Cujo359 @ 15
Thanks! Will update.
TeddySanFran @ 34
Thanks! (she says sheepishly)
Oops. Not Dick Cheney’s and George Bush’s buddies, or members of the National Petroleum Council, but members of Dick Cheney’s and George W. Bush’s buddies in the National Petroleum Council?
Umm . . . not what you meant to write, I’m guessing. But funny! Definitely. I say let it stand.
Er, wait . . . I didn’t mean it that way . . .
A few points:
Including someone’s name and city as in your letter-to-the-editor story: please don’t do that. It’s not about LC.
The Brooks thing was a howler. It illustrates the lawyer’s thing: “argue the facts if you have them, or argue the spirit, and with neither just make a lot of noise”.
