Rightly outraged though we are at the Libby commutation, let’s not forget the underlying crime – lying us into war. Churchill said that in war, truth must be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies. Not if you’re Dick and George — their lie must be surrounded by legions of lies.
Not just the big lie of Niger uranium and mushroom clouds to get us into the war, but so many lies about the war itself.
First we had several years of the “liberation” lie, now have the new “surge” version – “decreased civilian casualties.”
But take a look at the picture above – it is from an Iraqi town named Diwaniya. On Monday, F16s “hit targets in a street in the Shi’ite Muslim city of Diwaniya” in retaliation for mortar attacks on the nearby coalition military base Camp Echo. You can see the results – the photographer added the following caption:
A neighbor holds Qassem Abdullah’s family photograph he salvaged from the rubble of their home in Diwaniyah, 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Baghdad, Iraq, Tuesday, July 3, 2007. Qassem’s home was destroyed in an air strike Tuesday, killing all of his four children. Qassem, his wife and sister are hospitalized in serious condition. (AP Photo/Alaa al-Marjani)
A day later, US forces said they were “reviewing the incident to ensure that appropriate and proportionate force was used” but a spokesman for the 900 Polish forces in the area “suggested a mistake might have been made.” And both US and international law forbids targeting of civilian populations.
This attack comes just one week after another air strike on residential neighborhoods that even Nouri Al Maliki objected to.
Then again Al Makiki is not so happy with his US allies these days. In fact, he sent his senior military adviser out to:
complain that despite the green zone government spending $ 500 million 7 months ago to be supplied with weapons the US has so far only supplied the green zone government with 5,000 light machine guns. Which as he accurately points out: “is not enough even to protect a small area of Baghdad. (translation from Arabic by the GorillasGuides team)
Reports like that makes me wonder about all those billions of dollars Congress keeps approving for the big lie of “arming the Iraqis so they can stand up.” Audit anyone?
One more big lie for today: remember all that Iraqi oil money that was going to pay for everything … until George found it was easier to just ask Congress for another blank check?
Well it seems that sources in Southern Iraq are now reporting that 50% of the oil produced in the last few months is being smuggled to “some countries and major international companies.” (translation from Arabic also from GorillasGuides)
Of course, George is really great friends with Sayyed Abdul-Aziz Al-Hakim, Leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq who he greeted at the White House in December 2006:
“I appreciate so very much His Eminence’s commitment to a unity government. I assured him the United States supports his work …”
And this great friend Al-Hakim is not only the head of the Badr brigade, reported to be the largest death squad in Iraq, but he’s also the head of a family known for their oil smuggling expertise so maybe George and his friends in those “major international companies” are telling the truth about one thing – their support for all Al Hakim’s family’s hard “work?”

Thank you Siun for another great post. And thanks for the link to gorillasguides last Sunday. It’s on my bookmark bar now.
Laura Doty @ 1
Congrats, on the Zed, Laura!
Fitz at Amherst on CSPAN2 right now and it’s terrific.
Laura – thanks!
and thanks to the Guides team for making it possible for all of us to read Arabic sources in translation – so much never gets covered here.
Thanks for this really important, sobering post.
George W. Bush and his puppetmaster, Dick Cheney.
War criminals.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Siun, thanks again for keeping our attention on this vile war.
All I can say is Goddamn these people to hell!
Meanwhile, some Iraqis spend one-fifth of their monthly income to buy gas to run their own generators in order to have SOME electricity….those, of course, who are fortunate enough to have a generator…and a job. And can wait a day or more (if you’re a man without connections) in line to buy gas. I love seeing my tax dollars at work.
So, anyone know much about those contractors?
Siun @ 4
Ain’t that the truth! One can only shake their head in utter disbelief at Shrub’s overt acts to enrich his ‘have-more’ base! The 50% of the Shiite oil is most certainly being exploited by his Big Oil cronies!!!
George W Bush is right — the Iraqi people really must do better at expressing their gratitude for the sacrifices Americans have made to free their country from the evil dictator Saddam.
We are going to be seeing more use of “Air Assets” against civilians. As casualties, frustration and fatigue increase, the response will be F-16 to take out a mortar or RPG. The more we kill Iraqi’s now, the more they will make us pay when we withdraw.
Reposted from below, but relevant, IMO.The worms are turning.
We spent part of the day following Iraq Veterans Against the War as they staged guerrilla theatre through the streets of downtown Denver. Six vets in combat gear patrolled the 16th Street Mall, arresting and detaining Iraqi civilians who protested the occupation of their country. Other organisers and volunteers handed out explanatory postcards to the bemused holiday throngs who were shopping or eating lunch at pavement cafes. The reaction was generally positive; people were actually reading the cards and asking questions. Afterwards the IVAW guys gave a press conference on the steps of the federal building where the military recruiting office is located.

I’m glad you re-posted PeterCO. What a day well-spent!

OT..Moonie Times slams Bush on Libby..
Via Yglesias, check out what the Moonie Times has to say:
Perjury is a serious crime. This newspaper argued on behalf of its seriousness in the 1990s, during the Clinton perjury controversy, and today is no different. We’d have hoped that more conservatives would agree. The integrity of the judicial process depends on fact-finding and truth-telling. A jury found Libby guilty of not only perjury but also obstruction justice and lying to a grand jury. It handed down a very supportable verdict. This is true regardless of the trumped-up investigation and political witch hunt. It is true regardless of the unjustifiably harsh sentence.
Had Mr. Bush reduced Libby’s sentence to 15 months, we might have been able to support the decision. Alas, he did not.

PeteCO, the photos and commentary were great. Congratulations on an excellent day — I wonder, were there any interactions with local law enforcement? I think they might find this unsettling; or was it permitted and done with their foreknowledge? I recall some problems in DeeCee when this group had a similar “performance” — but kudos to you all!
6 Canadians killed in Afghanistan – roadside bomb.
US helicopter forced down in Iraq, 1 killed.
5 pending US soldiers pending confirmation.

LS – unconfirmed reports (but from a usually reliable iraqi news source) of 10 killed in one convoy today plus one pilot of a helicopter which was shot down … not sure of others.
Siun @ 23
Damn. Thanks Siun.
LS @ 24
Siun. Mr. LS is asking. Are you saying 10 in Iraq instead of 5 pending? Or, are you saying 4 in addition to the 6 in Afghanistan? We’re unclear on this. Thanks!
And this is better than living under Sadaam Hussein? How is it that the rest of the world is letting us get away with this?
When are the democrats going to stand up, so Bush can lie down?
Kuchinich is on CNN. He has it right about this war.
The UK terror plot and the Libby payoff have successfully pushed any discussion of the deadliest quarter for Americans in the War On Iraq deep into the back pages of US newspapers, if they cover it at all.
And yet, even our local newscast managed to find — and lead with! — the news that Iraqi civilian casualties are down this month (as if anyone believed that).
LS – 10 more on top of all other reports.
Sources being checked now but that’s the word
Siun @ 17
Not yet, but will. I’m currently choking down Ali Allawi’s The Occupation of Iraq. (which I would underline if I knew how, sorry editors out there).

Thanks Siun. Holy shit (&%*()(&(%&*(&^)
PeteCO!
Wonderful report – thank you for the news but more for the action itself! I had heard of a similar event in DC and I’m so glad it is spreading …
(ps- we share some similar history – tho I was doing Trident work on the east coast while you were at Rocky Flats)
I struggle daily to remember to say OCCUPATION of Iraq. That’s what it is, not a war, not a surge.
Thinking about the fact that my country invaded and now occupies another country gives me a toes over the edge of the abyss feeling…pebbles falling. (Makes me work harder.)
Siun @ 17
I’m going to check this out. Possible new Blackwater grounds in San Diego County.

Any other Al Gore fans here see the news about his son?
On the eve of his dad’s global concert series no less. I hope Gore’s daughters take his son into a back room somewhere and beat the shit out of him. You know this will be the only topic of discussion that comes up whenever Al Gore, The Environment or Live Earth concerts are mentioned on the news for the next three days.
Well… At least he was driving a hybrid. :(
TeddySanFran @ 20
The Denver PD were obviously forewarned; they had a squad car and an officer on a bicycle following the proceedings the whole time. It was a little more interesting when we got to the recruiting office; there are a number of Federal buildings in that area including the old and new courthouses (where McVeigh was tried) so the Federal “Homeland Security” guys popped up and were keeping a close eye; one of the volunteers handed them a postcard. The only person who looked really pissed was the local Fox affiliate cameraman who showed up; I think he would have rather have been back at the station watching sports.
Siun @ 22
Thanks for the link..The Air Force would love to be given the “green light” to fix the Iraq problem. The Christianists who have taken over the Air Force make Curtis LeMay look rational.
The “Eliminationists”, Lieberman, Podoretz, and the neo-cons also would like the same result. Then off to Iran.
Nate @ 37
Didn’t the twins (Jenna and not Jenna) have problems too??? Not to mention W hissef.
I have to say, I was really quite struck by the two stories when I saw them in Guides – $500,000,000 and all they got were 5,000 M16s (which are bad weapons for the desert – jam easily and hard to maintain)! who got the rest of that money?
and who is getting 50% of the oil?
I really hope someone with the right access or authority(House?) is digging into these carefully.
Siun @ 41
LS @ 42
Sorry, inverted comment. Ch…mine, the rest Siun.
LS @ 40
Think the media will mention word one about that?
How about Jeb Bush’s daughter breaking into a pharmacy to steal Oxycontin? Think we’ll hear a word about that?
We have to do more than bring out troops home. We need to get the mercenaries out of there as well as ALL air bases and that monstrous largest US Embassy in the world. An Embassy stands for diplomacy not occupation and hired guns. And we paid for it all. Every last dime spent.
I suggest reading Blackwater during the daylight hours. It is — seriously — not good bedtime reading at all. But I highly recommend the book; they are already here and we had better know them. They are expanding into remotely piloted airborne observation platforms as well.
Siun @ 33

Nate @ 44
Yeah. We just mentioned it. Again. What’s the difference, a bunch of humans pounding out info on a computer, or a bunch of humans pounding out info on a computer. The difference….truth, not talking points.
Churchill said that in war, truth must be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies. Not if you’re Dick and George — their lie must be surrounded by legions of lies.
Once again, Siun, you’ve gotten me to laugh in sadness and in joy.

PeteCo … I was just chatting with someone … about HRC reminding us of Maggie.
scary!

Never having been the kid of a famous person or a federal officeholder or someone elected to and denied the US Presidency, I am not quick to anger at the young man, whose upbringing and struggles I cannot begin to understand.
Speaking for late nite moderator Suzanne, I presume you meant to say, “beat the metaphorical shit out of him?”
TeddySanFran @ 28
Somehow, those “terror plots” just don’t make sense to me. Highly regarded neurosurgeons and medical doctors? The neurosurgeons I dealt with during family medical crisis had little time much less energy to plan terrorists attacks. Something is fishy here. So many conveniently surfaced in the nick of time.
PeteCo and Mrs., great job!
TeddySanFran @ 46
Teddy, you are really scaring me.
QuakerGirl @ 53
Well, one wouldn’t want to have “sympathy” with the exodus of Iraqi physicians would one….demonize them as efficiently as possible – in the worst possible way. I don’t know the facts, but I regard any definition of anyone in our Administration or the UK Administration, as extremely suspect – to say the least. How convenient that physicians can so easily be swayed into executing terrorist acts.
Democracy in wartime (from “American Caesar”, by William Manchester):
One evening at dinner the chief of staff (Richard Sutherland) argued that America should abandon democracy in wartime, that congress wasted too much time debating, that elections should be abolished and a dictatorship proclaimed. According to another officer:
General MacArthur listened for a while and then told Sutherland he was wrong; that democracy works and will always work, because the people are allowed to think, to talk, and keep their minds free, open, and supple. He said that while the dictator state may plan a war, get everything worked out down to the last detail, launch the attack, and do pretty well at the beginning, eventually something goes wrong with the plan. Something interrupts the schedule. Now, the regimented minds of the dictator command are not flexible enough to handle quickly the changed situation. They have tried to make war a science when it is actually an art.
He went on to say that a democracy, on the other hand, produces hundreds and thousands of flexible-minded, free-thinking leaders who will take advantage of the dictator’s troubles and mistakes and think of a dozen ways to outthink and defeat him. As long as a democracy can withstand the initial onslaught, it will find ways of striking back and eventually it will win. It costs money and at times does look inefficient but, in the final analysis, democracy as we have it in the United States is the best form of government that man has ever evolved.
He paused and said, “The trouble with you, Dick, I am afraid, is that you are a natural-born autocrat.”
I copied this from Andrew Sullivan’s blog because the Lakers can out think the dictator..
TeddySanFran:
Have you ever checked out this site—really interesting:—-

LS @ 56, The British terrorist plot bothers me because it seems unlikely that many doctors could build incendiary devices so poorly. The Mercedes had the window shuts causing a lack of oxygen.. Physicians have to take a lot more science classes than average citizens so it just seems odd..
LS @ 56
Unless the CIA pushed a needle in them, dressed them and sent them on their merry way. Voila! The handy-dandy police were right there. ignore me. It’s 107 here and my patio plants and brain fried. Is this just the start of global warming. I really can’t take it.

I never thought of it before but maybe there are similarities. It certainly takes a huge degree of determination, as a woman, to rise to the top in that world, I would think. Similar personality types, if not politics. Then again, Thatcher almost seems like a moderate compared to BushCo, so maybe not.
Loo Hoo. @ 56
Thanks. All we did was show up & take some pictures!
Laura Doty @ 14
Thanks LD, appreciate that link, and any Juan Cole I can get!! The man is a precious treasure.
Serious question: Does Blackwater have an intelligence arm to its operation modeled after the CIA et al? As a private corporation do they have to disclose if they are spying on citizens, collecting data, selling to US intelligence agencies?
I have not read, but I heard about a book written about Churchill’s actions during WWII. The message was that Churchill supposedly told the citizens of London to stand strong in the face of the Blitz, purporting that he was on the roof of a building in London, but that, in fact, he was way out in the country somewhere in a secure facility. I cannot back this up right now, as I speak, but there was a book documenting this. I don’t know if it was true or just rumor. Anyone know what I’m referring to?

Plus, any pressurised gas cylinder is designed NOT to explode when initially exposed to heat or flame. I learned that in trade school 25 years ago; any welder will tell you the same.

Actually, you have to ask, down from what and compared with what other comperable period. I’ve been warning of this for some time. We are going to hear “The surge is working, casulties are down.” Watch.

If this goes down in a bad way folks, we need to be prepared to be able to be in touch. Just think about how, just in case. Remember, so many people are used to the internet the way it is, we don’t have to go along with their crapola; they won’t and they don’t even go along with their own crapola.
Hi Guys.
Was just about to post, with little time to spare, then noticed someone else already called attn to Fitz’s appearance at Amherst Coll. i believe dated 5/25/07. Speech and Q&A afterwards caught on C-Span.
I didn’t get to hear Fitz’s initial speech, but the question & answer period alone was far more than worth the price of admission. I hope they show the whole thing again.
If anyone knows of a link, I’d appreciate it.
Loo Hoo. @ 69
If only it would actually become law. Can you imagine what would happen to Iran invasion plans if folks HAD to start talking about a draft?
Quaker Girl .. Blackwater has found it very useful to make the legal argument that they are not responsible for anything at anytime. They argue that they are employed by the State Dept and DOD and therefore part of our forces and so immune from normal legal requirements … but they also claim that as a corporation, they are immune from certain oversight.
Quite a deal, eh?
And note the the contractors in Iraq mostly work for Condi at State.
Siun @ 77
Okay. That does it. I’m buying the book tomorrow morning.
LS @ 67
Not true. He was in a bunker adjacent to Parliament for much of the Blitz; it’s now a museum. I think if there was any truth to the rumour it would have been verified by now. The study of Churchill’s life is a cottage industry, so if there was evidence it would have surfaced. He was known to go up on the roof during bombing raids.
PeteCO @ 70
Oh…my…my…don’t tell me I have to find tinfoil? /s
We need to expose all the crap they have labeled and written off as tinfoil (some of it probably is), conspiracy theory, etc. …
They would do anything. JMHO – not the opinion of FDL..
I’m just sayin’…
Laura – it’s a very good book, and while scary, is a very good read. Scahill – like Fisk on the Middle East – uses real skill at basic reporting to keep his book readable and real.
PeteCO @ 77
I’m still going to try to find the reference. “He was known to”…doesn’t convince me exactly, but I respect your point-of-view, and I have no historical facts to back-up that rumor, I’m sure you have more concrete historical background about it than I. I’m still going to look for it though…:)
Laura – to get you started:
Scahill testimony
LS, I worry about the blogosphere network being able to be in touch too. I wonder if ActBlue, BlueAmerica, ACLU, MoveOn, etc. keep our mailing addresses just in case?
PeteCo, We either have a lot of dr’s who possibly wanted to make a statement without a lot of harm or a set up..
Siun @ 77
They may claim to be immune but has this claim ever been legally contested? Enron also made many claims. If they work for the state department and Pentagon their remuneration comes from tax payers. I’ll bet some smart lawyer out there knows how to position a case. Who would be the likely party to bring legal action? We can’t count on congress; they would just have hearings and the results would be shelved. Any ideas?

There goes your argument for labelling records, Tipper
;>)
You know … while I too find the “terrorist” plots in the UK a bit off and conveniently timed – I also think we have to recognize how really desperate people are who are in Iraq or have family there, etc. How do you think the people in the neighborhood in that photo above feel … right now? How about the relatives, maybe refugees from Iraq, of those 4 little kids in the picture feel?
The more you brutalize and oppress people, the more they react.
Loo Hoo. @ 35
Already started, months ago. Ground broken, construciton underway, according to Christine Craft . . . a HUGE training and WHAT evah facility . . . local ranchers upset, protests held, some dissent, NO legal defense underway to halt it.
Fully approved by GropeANator . . .

Thank you. I watched that with great interest the day they testified. I know it’s a must read. Putting it at the TOP of the list, now.
LS @ 81
That’s according to Martin Gilbert, his official biographer. I read the single volume abridged version several years ago. The full version runs to eleven volumes (I think) and was put together with Churchill’s son, with full access to all his papers, after his death in 1965. Gilbert certainly didn’t whitewash some of Churchill’s more reprehensible (by today’s standards) thoughts or actions, so I find it difficult to believe he was exhorting plucky Londoners to fight them on the beaches while he was sitting at Chartwell with his feet up, enjoying brandy & cigars.
Just sayin’ ;)
LS @ 74
Merely another national resource (our Air Waves) that Shrub’s Megacorp cronies can mine a quick buck from ‘We the People’!!!
Siun @ 89
That is so true. I would never forget if this happened to my family. No one forgets nor do they shove it out of sight, out of mind. The debt will be paid in kind. If you have no power with the law, there is always the classic – village justice. An ancient practice by every culture.
Part of the UK physician story have been that one of them was very angry about the carnage is his country. Well, yes. I wonder how many more there are of these very angry people. And Bush is out there chiding “those” who would make choices not in the best interest of our country. His Bible education should teach him something about the “log” in his own eye. I am pretty sure he does not quite discern truth from not truth. He must be stopped from being the “decider” and our “leader.”
JPL @ 84
I find it rather hard to believe that doctors who work for the British National Health Service (of which I have some experience) had the energy to go home at the end of their shifts, and plan Terra.
terrific Suin! The activation of such preponderance has obfuscated the periphery to the point of diabolical esteem. This article now goes beyond even the thorbold hint of infinitesimal fortitude. Again i must say it is this type of article that behoaves even the most boyant of individuals. This has indeed enlightened my the habtual effervesence to say the least.
As this photo would underline then how many more such “incidents” have taken place in Iraq?
This is the American version of “terrorism” that very likely goes on every day in Iraq.
If it was your family in that photo how would you react? As an Iraqi? As an American?
Attack from the air is a mainstay of American tactical strategy going back to WW2. We know it was a large component during the American War in Vietnam.
It surely is being practiced with full ferocity in Iraq.
You won’t see this photo on the History or Discovery channel when American airborne weaponry is being glorified and trumpeted.
But this is what all that weaponry does and often ends at.
Israel is also a practitioner of this form of terrorism from the sky. See Lebanon Summer 2006.
See Gaza ongoing Israeli sky terrorism acts.
We are continually reminded by Israel of how terrible the Arab terrorists are. Yet the Israelis are full practitioners of sky terror.
But that is different. And not to be ’seen” as being “terror”.
The American follow-up to the incident that led to this photo being found in a pile of rubble sounds much like a standard Israeli response to such acts.
It surely seems to be one more example of the American approach to Iraq. Kill them off until they are fully debased and pliable.
Just like Israels WestBank/Gaza strategy.
I spent the day volunteering at the U.S. Vets 4th of July BBQ here in Vegas, where I sang and played guitar for them (they provide comphrehensive services for homeless veterans, of which we have about 4,300 here in the Las Vegas area). I am fried; it was an outdoor gig (albeit in the shade), and we’re at 116F here today.
One of our congresscritters, Shelley Berkley, showed up to speak and confer some medals.
I took her aside and asked the following:
“Tony Snow yesterday admitted that the President and his top advisors had been discussing for several weeks the ‘appropriate’ response to the pending decision on Libby’s appeal for a stay of sentence. How many other convicted federal appellants do you suppose have gotten similar monitoring and deliberation regarding the progress of their in-process stay requests by the Bush administration?”
Her immediate, angry reply? “Oh, none, you can count on it.”
I asked emphatically that she and her fellow legislators loudly include this in their arguments against this execrable insult to America.
Bush didn’t even wait for the ink to dry on the denial-of-stay order. It was a done deal from the outset of Libby’s conviction (with the pardon obviously to follow, on Bush’s last day in office). Of course, we all know that, but for John and Jane Apathetic, this specific point needs to be hammered relentlessly, in addition to all the others.
I have written all my other legislators (Reid, Ensign, Porter) and will continue. I have never been more pissed. They’re counting on just arrogantly riding this out. Don’t let it happen.
I saw it but the man is 24. Does this reflect on Gore?
Siun @ 89
If someone did this to my home, my country, my neighborhood, my family, my friends — I’m pretty sure how I would react. Whether I was an educated doctor in a faraway land or a peasant trying to subsist under an occupier.
How can the rest of the world not blame us, as US citizens, for allowing this massacre to continue? They don’t understand the rules of the senate, hell, I can’t understand them myself. They don’t understand the political juggling and compromise in the house, or the worry of the veto.
They do understand, however, right and wrong.
Shootthatarrow … precisely!
This goes on daily – air attacks on residential neighborhoods in Iraq … neighbors frantically digging out children and loved ones ..
we just don’t report it
We’re doing it in Afghanistan as well.
And it is a war crime – plain and simple. You are not allowed to attack civilians.
snowbird42 @ 98
Of course it does. He’s a Democrat.
BobbyG – good work!
Kaiser – thanks!
Loo Hoo. @ 101
Exactly. And silence is still complicity.
And how silent–and imageless–are our front pages.
Bobby G @ 97, Good job! And in the heat, too. I thought the 100 we had here in Denver was bad.
PeteCo 92,
I agree with you. I don’t think he was snifting brandy with his feet up.
What I heard, was an interview with a biographer about 8-10 years ago, who said that the “rooftop” broadcasts were not conducted from a rooftop. It did not suggest that Churchill was enjoying luxury, but that he was not actually on the rooftop in London as portrayed. It could have been Gilbert, but I’m not sure…oh well. The point is, to me, that what you hear isn’t always exactly what is happening – especially in a time of war or occupation/conflicts as we are experiencing today.
BobbyG @ 98
BobbyG -
You vote in the same state I do. My congressman is Deal Heller. I’ve been on them regularly. With enough of us holding their feet to the fire they should start feeling the heat – higher than 116 degrees. Thank you for writing them. Nevada is a tough borderline state. I vote in Reno and I feel like most of my energy is spent getting them to take action. They think action is stuffing envelopes for the Democratic Party.
LS @ 107
Which brings us neatly back to the IVAW action I attended earlier, which was called “Operation:First Casualty”. The casualty in question being, of course, the truth.

BobbyG — good on ya!
Hat’s off, Bobby G.
BobbyG- you rock man!!!
What they all said.
Kaiser … just been perusing your website … big grin from here … nice work!
Has anybody resurrected the “Bomb them back to the Stone Age” chestnut yet, referring to Iraq and not Viet Nam?
That’s usually one of the reactions to frustration among the military-minded.
I’ve been looking through the history of Sumer, Ur, the events about 2000 B.C. and before, and I would think that we would take off our shoes out of respect when over there: it should be holy ground for anyone interested in civilizations, certainly not a bombing range.
Hey gang! Lew’s up with the next part of the Padilla trial:I could tell you …
behindthefall @ 118
Interesting (if depressing) today was an unsolicited comment of of the veterans made to me (see my #99):
“We need to get our guys outa there and bomb the place to the ground.”
I don’t think well ever get a handle on exactly how much civilian death and destruction we have caused in Iraq. We’ve waged war against them longer, I believe, than we did against Germany and Japan. As with Vietnam there will be no accountability.
I would expect that the Democrats will win a substantial political victory in Nov. 2008. But I’m afraid that at heart, it will be business as usual in the nation’s capital. The Democrats, I fear, will not truly seek any serious accountability from the Bush-Cheney cabal.
There will be no serious investigations. We will never learn how many civilians casualties because the Senate and House will not dig that deep. They will be too busy securing their elections-to-come in two or four or six. There won’t be the will to have serious inquiries.
No one will pay. Not Bush. Not Cheney. None of them.
On the bombing of civilians. The U.S. government has adopted the policy of the Israely government in the Occupied Territories. Bomb ‘m if you think it will do some good. So what if it kills some civilians; there’s more where they came from.
“Audit anyone?”
Hahahahahahaha! You kidder!
I think anyone concerned with this:
should dig into the BAE scandal.
