TRex, I am not familiar with Tori Amos’ body of work, but I really like what I hear here. Which one of her CDs would you most recommend to a first time buyer?

Oh, wow. You may be asking the wrong guy. This song that she’s singing is a Neil Young song, but it sounds most like her second album, “Under the Pink” from 1994. She does a bit of howling and piano-humping on that record, though, so I’m not sure how fun it would be for a novice.

The new one is awfully good, but my all-time favorite is “Scarlet’s Walk” from 2002. That one is wall-to-wall with gorgeous songs, and the last one on that album, “Gold Dust”, is my favorite song of hers. It’s so beautiful that it has literally, brought me to my knees before.

It got off the line very fast, probably because of the electric motor. In general it’s sluggish in its acceleration. But it’s very quiet and smooth, and somehow that seemed to make it okay. (I can’t explain why.)

Our Attorney General said that he was free to speak and that we wouldn’t enforce the no-talking-to-media part of his sentence. Still, I think he’s so shit-scared to going back to Gitmo that he’s going to keep to the terms of the agreement.

The only thing we agreed to was that he serve any sentence in an Aussie jail. He certainly not barred from speaking out here. I get the feeling that he wants to forget it, maybe we’ll find out different.

I felt incredibly sad when his laywer, having visited David for the first time after he returned to Australia, said that David was having a bit of trouble adjusting to the amount of freedom he had. He in the protected wing of a high security prison and it’s more freedom that he had for 5 years in Gitmo. Now he can listen to the radio, read the newspapers, see his family regularly and the lights get turned off at night. I can see why he might think it was paradise.

ok. i’ll try to explain this. yes, it does “get off the line fast” and then when i go to accelerate, especially when i want it to accelerate very quickly, then it’s almost like it takes a moment to kick in, but then it’s very responsive. waaay more than the toyota trucks i drove for many years before i got the prius in october. so i’m really happy with the acceleration and how it drives.

i adore the smart key that i never need to take out of my purse to open the car or turn it on or lock it. it knows it’s me.

i hate the beeping it makes in reverse. and the low clearance compared to the truck. and the much lower visibility out the windows, for passing and back up. physically, it’s not as comfortable as the truck: distance from me to steering wheel, where to rest my arms when they’re not on the wheel, how the seat belt sits.

Last year I had a test drive in a Prius.

It got off the line very fast, probably because of the electric motor. In general it’s sluggish in its acceleration. But it’s very quiet and smooth, and somehow that seemed to make it okay. (I can’t explain why.)

ok. i’ll try to explain this. yes, it does “get off the line fast” and then when i go to accelerate, especially when i want it to accelerate very quickly, then it’s almost like it takes a moment to kick in, but then it’s very responsive. waaay more than the toyota trucks i drove for many years before i got the prius in october. so i’m really happy with the acceleration and how it drives.

i adore the smart key that i never need to take out of my purse to open the car or turn it on or lock it. it knows it’s me.

i hate the beeping it makes in reverse. and the low clearance compared to the truck. and the much lower visibility out the windows, for passing and back up. physically, it’s not as comfortable as the truck: distance from me to steering wheel, where to rest my arms when they’re not on the wheel, how the seat belt sits.

There was an article in a local paper a couple days ago that claimed that the Prius is the only hybrid that is selling well. The claim is that that’s because the other hybrids are optional variations of a normal car. Most people who drive buy hybrids want to make a statement and the distinctive styling of the Prius accomplishes that for them. (I don’t necessarily believe all that. But it’s an interesting theory.)

In Oregon, where I lived for many years, there was one election a year – you voted for issues, school board, city, county, state and national all at the same time. In Texas, we have ALL these elections at different times. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? As an tool for democracy, not so much.

The logic is quite interesting:

1) Libby’s sentence was commuted so that he’ll have nothing to gain
(e.g., his freedom) by testifying in future proceedings.

2) A full pardon has been withheld so that he can “take the fifth” and
thus will have nothing to lose by not testifying in future
proceedings.

3 Also, a full pardon has been withheld so far so that he’ll have
something to gain by continuing not to testify.

4) It may be possible to overcome #2 by giving him selective immunity,
but that gets trickey (and backfired in Ollie North’s case).

In Oregon, where I lived for many years, there was one election a year – you voted for issues, school board, city, county, state and national all at the same time. In Texas, we have ALL these elections at different times. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? As an tool for democracy, not so much.

Fellow Texan. I am active in politics (Duh!), work in the public schools, and never have a clue when the school board or school bond elections are. Missed two in the past few years.

2. I wanted a car that polluted our environment less.

3. I figured that insane as Bush is and as devoted as he is to earning money for the oil majors, the price of gas was going to go up considerably. To say nothing of what other leaders of our country and other countries might do that would continue/escalate the insanity.

The thing is, i work retail and i’ve not missed voting BEFORE i go in to work. They open the polling places incredibly early in michigan most of the time. There’s no reason to miss them, and i try not to. Those same polls are open much later during presidential and mid terms too. Usually up until 9pm or so. That way anyone who works 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift can find time to go in.

That’s what irks me about those who say ‘there’s no time!’. Being irritated with the apathy goes without saying. There’s seldom lines except during presidential elections. Even then, they’ve moved pretty steadily so you’re out of the cold in a short time.

Ah well. Time for me to head to bed. ‘night all.

They’re easy to miss. IIRC, the Austin Chronicle does endorsements for all of them. Used to be that you could just trust what they were endorsing, but not necessarily anymore. I pick up that paper weekly, so that’s probably the main place that I learn about the school related elections.

Someone up above was right aqbout the november polling being a holdover from the harvest season.

The thing is, i work retail and i’ve not missed voting BEFORE i go in to work. They open the polling places incredibly early in michigan most of the time. There’s no reason to miss them, and i try not to. Those same polls are open much later during presidential and mid terms too. Usually up until 9pm or so. That way anyone who works 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift can find time to go in.

That’s what irks me about those who say ‘there’s no time!’. Being irritated with the apathy goes without saying. There’s seldom lines except during presidential elections. Even then, they’ve moved pretty steadily so you’re out of the cold in a short time.

Ah well. Time for me to head to bed. ‘night all.

WOW!!! It has long looked to me as though Fitz has what he needs for an Espionage Act conviction. And he even hinted at it when announcing Libby’s indictment. But this is the first time that I’ve heard of a bona fide expert (emptywheel) say so. That changes everything.

So, what the hell is Fitz waiting for? And, if he has the goods on Libby, then almost surely he has the goods on Cheney. What’s up?

And now, I’m wondering about “sealed vs sealed”.

My dog Strider attacks fireworks. We don’t know why. He’s the sweetest, friendliest 97-pound lab-husky you’ll ever know, but fireworks drive him nutzola. He came back a little while ago with a singed nose. We figure some kids shot at him with a bottle rocket. We’re keeping him inside now, until it is over.

Let’s look at the logic of the commutation of Libby’s sentence:

Libby’s sentence was commuted so that he’ll have nothing to gain (e.g., his freedom) by testifying in future proceedings.

A full pardon has been withheld so that he can “take the fifth” and thus will have nothing to lose by not testifying.

Also, a full pardon has been withheld so far so that he’ll have something to gain by not testifying.

It may be possible to overcome #2 by giving him selective immunity, but that gets trickey (and backfired in Ollie North’s case).

But a couple of matters have been disturbing me for several weeks:

It looks to me like Fitz has everything he needs for a case against Libby, and possibly Cheney, under the Espionage Act.

It also looks good for an IIPA case as well:

Whoever, as a result of having authorized access to classified information, learns the identify of a covert agent and intentionally discloses any information identifying such covert agent to any individual not authorized to receive classified information, knowing that the information disclosed so identifies such covert agent and that the United States is taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent’s intelligence relationship to the United States, shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

The only piece missing seems to be evidence that Libby knew that “the United States [was] taking affirmative measures to conceal such covert agent’s intelligence relationship to the United States.”

So, it bothered me that Fitz hadn’t gone forward, and I thought I was
missing something.

In other words, there are three documents submitted at the trial that Libby–or his staff–labeled as “treated as Top Secret/SCI.”
Here’s what they record:

Now, in truth, it isn’t as simple as all this. Libby could argue there are other details from his notes on June 9 or July 8 that contained actual Top Secret information (such as details on an F-16 sale that he exhibited great discomfort about in the grand jury).

But that is not true of the note recording his conversation with Cheney. Much of that information consisted of talking points for the press (ostenisbly for Walter Pincus)–which were designed to be public and therefore not secret at all. There are details of Joe Wilson’s trip. But these details show up in other documents that are classified as “treated as secret”–and by the time this was stamped in December 2003, all that information had been declassified anyway. In other words, the single piece of information that was not formally declassified at the time Libby or his staffer stamped the document was Plame’s status.

This suggests one of several things. Perhaps whoever stamped the document was indicating–truthfully–that the note had been treated with the greatest secrecy. Perhaps the altered stamp indicated only that Libby was trying to protect Cheney. Or perhaps someone accidentally told the truth, indicating the information Cheney passed along was top secret.

Now that Libby’s sentence has been commuted, I say we haul his ass before Congress to explain what these changing notations mean.”

Two underlying crimes by Libby and possibly by Cheney as well. Now I can get some sleep.

You inspired me to smoke some salmon on my water smoker yesterday!

They couldn’t do surgery then, so she lived with it her entire life. She couldn’t do “N’s” at all, but she loved the term “Knucklehead.” So my brothers and I were all “Muckleheads” when we screwed up or she wanted to hassle us. It is still a family term of endearment, years after she passed.

IANAL, but IMHO: It’s not double jeopardy if they are different crimes. In this case, it’s perjury and obstruction. The follow on cases would be espionage and IIPA violation. Those seem different enough. Granted the perjury and obstruction were with regard to the “underlying cases.”

Senate Panel Faults Missile Defense Plan

Democrats in Congress are building a legislative roadblock to the Bush administration’s plan to place elements of a missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic.

The Senate is expected to join the House next week in reducing funds in the fiscal 2008 Defense Authorization Bill for construction of 10 interceptor missile sites in Poland and for deployment of an X-band radar in the Czech Republic. The House, in passing its version of the legislation last month, cut $40 million from the bill, which would have funded preparation of the Polish sites next year. The move prevents the White House from proceeding unless President Bush vetoes the measure.

The Senate Armed Services Committee, justifying its decision to delay funding for the European antimissile sites, emphasized not only foreign policy concerns but also technical issues surrounding the interceptor missiles.
