Dear Congressional Democrats-
Now that most of you have made your statements of dismay regarding the Scooter commutation, would it be too much to ask that you guys stop talking about taking this administration to the woodshed and actually do it?
Right, right, I'm sure you'll get right on it.
Thanks!
Love,

Shame.
Howdy TRex.
Damn Republics keep moving the woodshed further and further away from the Democrats.
-GSD
Hey TRex :-)
Well said. Simple. Eloquent. Great job TRex.
hi TRex
when can I stop banging my head against the wall?
I still think this president (and vice president) should be impeached, even if there aren’t enough votes to convict. Our national self-respect requires it.
Stop worrying, everybody. My new and improved strongly worded public letter coming right quick will really bring the WH down! You just wait.
Sincerely,
Harry
Short and sweet, TRex. There is no way in hell we are gonna let them weasel outta this. Actions speak louder than words.
punaise @ 7
Hopefully 1-20-09, but I hate to think about you banging your head against the wall for that long…

I agree completely.

TRex! You’re Back!!! I was getting worried there…!!!
did any democratic politician use the words “obstruction of justice” in their statement?
punaise @ 14
I don’t think so. His(?) head will soften up first.
Ahhhh, the 80’s. Bad clothes, really bad hair, but I swear there’s actually a good song buried in there somewhere. Close your eyes and pretend that those cheesy synthesizers are fat Stax-Volt horns.
Would all of the Democratic candidates who think that GWB gave this matter more than two seconds’ thought on his way to his holiday please raise your hands?
Thought so…
Perhaps we should move the woodshed closer to the outhouse so we could dispense some justice and get rid of the fowl smell at the time.

Gosh, she could sing. I heard she’s, like, working in a bank now.
spurious @ 8
Yes, I think you are right, because then a lot of things which are now hidden would come out. But the dems have made up their minds not to bother. Most of congress seems to hope that “oh, if only those next 18 months would be over already”. One by one, they pass up opportunities to be proactive. You don’t curb misuse of power by wishing the other would stop doing nasty things. You have to take it back.
It’s the summer recess and all congresscritters should be in their home districts. My suggestion would be to get their itinerary show up everywhere they go in large numbers to show our displeasure. My Representative’s office is only 3 blocks away and I’m going to bloody well go down there in person. I’m only working part time at the moment, so she and her staff are going to be seeing a lot of me.
TRex @ 29
Really?? Wow. She, Pat Benatar, and I all have something in common then. I was a bank teller in my youth.
TRex @ 29
Ihaven’t talked to Terri in a while, I know she bought the rights to the band name and does the club/fair circuit. Really great girl, and yes, a really good singer.
The other folks were cool, too. David Diamond, the cute keyboard player now repairs airplanes.

Helpless Dancer - I’ve been looking for you on the threads to say my congrats for the hat tip you got in Froomkin’s Thursday column wherein your Cheney comment was quoted.
Okay, for those of you who missed it…
In a blogosphere many light years ago (early this morning), before we got the news that flipped us out…
Christy Harden Smith had a post regarding WaPo hosting a Pity Party for (you know how).
When a young Jedi named Teddy posed the question If you’re invited to a Pity Party, what do you bring as a gift. Winners to be announced.
But, then, news from the Dark Side eclipsed the souiree.
But, there were some clever responses.

Come to think of it, W didn’t give the Congresscritters much warning of this Irve commutation, do you think? Easy for him to go on vacation, leave the press corps behind in Kennebunkport with Poppy and OldBar, and then commutate Irve. But — all the ‘critters have to face the home folks this week.
Could make for some tasty Independence Day parades, barbeques, and townhalls.

Bush doesn’t give a shit.
Dear American People,
Now that you have made your statements that Congressional Democrats do something, would it be too much to ask that you guys stop talking about taking this administration to the woodshed and actually get out on the streets, blockade 1400 Pennsylvania Ave, blockade every office of every Republican, be willing to get arrested, be willing to demonstrate en masse? They can’t jail all of you.

MARCY ON FITZ AND HER HARDBALL INTERVIEW::
Via email from Patrick Fitzgerald’s spokesperson:
“We fully recognize that the Constitution provides that commutation decisions are a matter of presidential prerogative and we do not comment on the exercise of that prerogative.
We comment only on the statement in which the President termed the sentence imposed by the judge as “excessive.” The sentence in this case was imposed pursuant to the laws governing sentencings which occur every day throughout this country. In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing.
Although the President’s decision eliminates Mr. Libby’s sentence of imprisonment, Mr. Libby remains convicted by a jury of serious felonies, and we will continue to seek to preserve those convictions through the appeals process.”
For the record, when I said almost the same thing on Hardball, I hadn’t gotten this yet in the email. Glad to see that my feeble mind is thinking along the lines of a great mind.
Update: Oh wait, I think I said the bit about the fact that this was not an excessive sentence for a different interview, that will no doubt be cut. You’ll have to take my word for it then

David Schuster was guest-host on Hardball tonight, and never have I seen a host smackdown members of the noise-machine with such authority. I’ve always insisted that they are sitting ducks for anyone who does a bit of homework, and David proved my point.
KO was his usual excellent self, but he had guests he didn’t need to lay a hand on. He says that he’s going to call for the resignations of Bush and Cheney tomorrow.

As for the succinct letter , nothing to add. I feel ya.
I just read a transcript from a conference call betw. Pelosi and a few bloggers where she, very straightforwardly stated that she did not think impeaching Bush was “worth it”.
What good is all of our outrage if Pelosis won’t see impeachment for the tool that it is? I mean we’ve been screaming and screaming and things just keep getting worse.
How do we get Pelosi and Co. to change their minds?
Out here in the Bay Area, two things are universally true: everyone commutes, and everyone hates commuting. But Bush has given us all another reason to hate commuting.

Sorry, Ma’am! I don’t have any digital pixs!!!
Just wrote Harry Reid asking him to call the Repubs bluff using, dear Trex, your superb guidelines for an effective angry letter. Make them do real filibusters if they don’t want bills to pass, I said. And let everyone see their obstructionism naked and revealed, not clothed in rules and procedures.
Um, Republicans naked and revealed? Sorry, that was meant to be a metaphor. Send me your mind bleach bill for reimbursement.
As for hitting your congressgritters when they’re home for the 4th — SIGHHHH. I live in New Orleans so my rep is, gawdalmighty, William “Dollar Bill” Jefferson. If I thought he had an ounce of clout with anyone, I’d pound on his office door to speak with him. But….

tbsa @ 104
Only the little people do time.
-Barbara Bush-Helmsley
Something else that just occurred to me…If Bush’s vast legal expertise leads him to conclude that a sentence following federal sentencing guidelines is “excessive,” when can we expect legislation to decrease these sentences for perjury? Perhaps some of our fine republican congress members can introduce it.
I also encourage those of you who have republican representatives to write them anyway. If you know they won’t do jack shit about Scooter, pretend to be part of the big 26% and urge them to investigate Bill Clinton some more. If enough people do it, they will try to introduce the “Bill’s penis” bill and hilarity will ensue.
Not to be a wet blanket, but are they all going home to see families and picnic and such. I kinda doubt they’ll be visiting their home offices.

demi, they are all booked to give various fourth of july speechs at labor picnics, town parades, etc. they will be accessible to us more this week than if they were in washington. the whole purpose of them being on recess is to interact with hometown folks on issues (the alleged purpose i should say).
John Tully @ 99

Teddy,
wasn’t it you this morning who asked If you’re invited to (Bush’s) pity party, what gift do you bring?
Oh, man….so many words today. Maybe I’m wrong…but do you remember that?
Suzanne @ 113
Ahhh, right. So right. Thanks.
If you’re a diabetic military vet with 25 years of service named Victor Rita, and you’re convicted of perjury and making false statements, the Supreme Court of the United States of America says that a sentence of 33 months is appropriate.
If you’re the man behind The Man behind George Bush, and you’ve been convicted of perjury and making false statements, the Commuter-in-Chief says that a sentence of a single day in jail is too much.
Josh has the details.

The headline on that article caught my eye. If by “providence” they mean “the folks with the buck who provide for Scooter,” then that’s an awfully snarky headline.
On the other hand, if by “providence” they mean “that supreme being somewhere,” then I think someone cut a quote out of that article. No one quoted expresses any faith in anything except money, connections, and the Divine Right of Republicans.

I’ve seen him many times on Olbermann and he has always been a way classy guest. Also, I know that he hit it off with the FDL folks at the Libby trial and gave them a lot of praise and credit on the air. I expected him to be good, but I didn’t expect what I say simply because never in a few decades had I seen someone prepared go up against a neocon. Usually, those on the left are totally unprepared and allow themselves to get taken apart.

No they don’t and the reason that more people aren’t out in the streets is that they don’t want to believe the horrors that are going on right before their own eyes. Someone needs to do what he did in that film..someone needs to start screaming and take some risks to bring down this obscene administration. My guy has gone into hiding.

“No events available.”
All due respect, Congressman, you can’t hide forever. This may be one of the 10 reddest districts in America, but you have to climb out of your hole next year to run for (certain) re-election, and we will be waiting for you with signs you won’t like and questions for which there will be no easy answers. That’s a promise.
But you know, say I take it upon myself to riot in the street on the Fourth of July. Right here in Athens, Georgia, that means I’ll be spending the Fifth of July in jail, and henceforth devoting a massive amount of my already thinly spread income to keeping myself out of jail.
I appreciate that other people are watching us, going, “Why don’t the Americans DO SOMETHING?” But, you know, what good will I do my country if I smash a couple of windows at a Gap and go to jail?
It’s fucking expensive to get in trouble in this country. I’ve been arrested for brawling once. I don’t want to go to jail again.

We need something other than talk.
Talk alone is just more hot air. I’m so fucking fed up with this shit.
We need a national strike. A day where everyone goes to work and then just sits down, stops working. No one buys anything or sells anything. A full day of work stoppage in protest of the Bush Administration.

What. A. Crock. Of. Shit.
Wrong on every point.
Why does this bozo have a soapbox?
TRex @ 165

I knew Digby wouldn’t disappoint!!!
“The oh-so-jaded political observers like Tim Noah see this whole thing as some sort of partisan game of tag. Let the plebes natter on about the following the rules — we’ll call the play by play and let the little people know who’s “winning.” From their perches atop the commentariat they smugly dismiss the concerns of average Americans who are enraged that these people keep cheating and getting away with things that ordinary citizens and even powerful Democrats could never dream of getting away with — they relentlessly smear their opponents with the filthiest lies, they stage partisan impeachments, they steal elections, they illegally start wars and make up novel authoritarian theories of governance — and then they use their powers to excuse their minions from the consequences of these actions if they happen to get sloppy and get caught. None of them ever pay. Ever.”
She certainly has a way with words!!!(sigh) *g*
It is only by words that we can express our anger and make the changes needed to our government. Correntewire has posted some phone numbers from the WH as they closed down their main switchboard today (Mon) and there is some question as to whether it will be up tomorrow. Max: “Wait, wait. I make him better, Humperdink suffers?”
Inigo: “Humiliations galore.”
Max: “That is a noble cause.”
That’s what Scooter needs: humiliations galore.
Humiliations like Scooter making Paris Hilton look tough.
So, Scooter — Paris Hilton can tough out a whole three weeks in jail, but you can’t even deal with a single day? Oh, sure, you think you can, but George Bush thinks otherwise.
Bring on the humiliations!

The reps are all gonna be ridin’ in floats, attending BBQ’s, and speechifying on the 4th! Organizing is done. Take it local!
Isn’t your town having a 4th of July Parade?
gentle reminder - comments that contain threats of violence will be pulled.
we must not break the law while fighting the breaking of the rule of law.
TRex @ 165
The problem with that, dear therapod, is that is also freakin’ expensive. That’s how folks like us lose our jobs, and now that welfare is thoroughly dismantled, we’re quite stuck.
They got us where they want us….we can’t afford to revolt.
punaise @ 158
Yes, I did my best to hold down the fort while she was giving her outstanding speech.
Wow, Digby sure didn’t spare Noah. He deserves it. This is exactly what Digby predicted… The Washingtonians defending their own from what the common people have to face when committing crimes… followed by “get over it.”
TRex @ 162
Maybe Fred Thompson would raise millions for your defense fund, and then Bush would commute your sentence.
The Republican Party: “Your Silly Laws Don’t Apply to US!”
By the way, I’m not going to brag about predicting that Scooter would receive a pardon (equivalent). I will, however, brag about predicting that it would happen before July 4:
Too bad no one took me up on it :/
TRex @ 161
don’t riot trex, carry a sign. be a presence - there’s lots to do between rioting and nothing.
Actually, I think economically is the only way we CAN revolt. Violent protest will land you behind bars. If enough people go on strike for a day, they can’t fire us all.
Peterr @ 181
the chances for that could be drowned in a bathtub.
Blackford @ 170
Denver ‘08, would be suitable forum to pay our Fortieth anniversary respects!!! What more apt way to show our respect to the process??? 8-)
TRex @ 183
That is what the FAA Air Controllers thought when they went on strike - but Ray-gun fired ‘em all.
They didn’t fire (or arrest) all the demonstrators after last years immigration protests.
Suzanne –
I clairfy: All I’m talking about is peaceful deomonstration, with one purpose, one issue, one goal.
Not Chicago. No violence.
Eureka Springs @ 188
And this could be even bigger.
Watch for Patrick Leahy.
He was pissed on Sunday over the stonewalling his committee is getting from Fred Fielding and the White House over the non-cooperation regarding the US attorney firing investigation and also the oversight into the warrantless wiretapping.
I don’t think today’s event will help improve his mood. Leahy knows the difference between words and deeds, and he’s sick of the White House words.
My letter to Harry Reid -
They lied about WMD and led us into war. But still I held out hope for justice.
They smeared their opponents, outing a CIA agent to clamp down on dissent. But still I held out hope for justice.
The administration stonewalled about the leak and denied any involvement. But still I held out hope for justice.
The attorney general would not recuse himself, and when when he did he delayed informing the White House they must keep documents. But still I held out hope for justice.
The federal prosecuter claimed he could not determine if a crime had been comitted. But still I had out hope for justice.
The only man indicted for this reckless partisan behavior could only be convicted of lying to investigators and obstructing justice with a maximum sentence of 30 months in prison. But still I held out hope for justice.
The partisans jawboned for a pardon while the defendent argued he must not go to jail until his appeals were exhausted. But still I held out hope for justice.
Now, on the eve of the defendent’s imprisonment, the command-in chief, and leader of the free world, who has sworn to uphold the constitution and the rule of law, who promised to punish anyone in his administration found guilty of leaking the agent’s name and has pledged time and again that his policy throughout this affair would be to not comment on an going investigation lest he interfere with our system of justice has now commuted the sentence of the only man held responsible for the crimes of that president’s administration. For what reason should I hold out hope for justice now?
Dover Bitch @ 154
Is this guy Noah an idiot?
What the fuck is he talking about? Clinton was never convicted of anything! Typically the convicted serve longer sentences than those who aren’t convicted. What’s harsh about that?
TRex @ 183
one of the problems with that idea is that we wait around for everyone else to act - so that we can join in. the world can’t wait.
The goal, the message:
Arrest Cheney, Bush Resign.
TRex @ 191
Sure should be… but fat lazy gringos… I don’t know if they are mad enough to get out of the AC and stand up for their constitution and the rule of law yet.
Bobdog @ 192
awesome bobdog!
Myrtle June @ 189
Civil disobedience is the elixir, yet, a little violence tends to raise the necessary awareness to what’s afoot!!! I think the Chicago Seven were railroaded!!!
G’nite, all.
Bobdog - Great letter!
’bout how many people do you suppose would it take to surround the White House - say… a hundred people deep?
all chanting, “im-peach, im-peach, im-peach” and keeping bush awake late into the night?
Myrtle June @ 188
one can’t control the violent actions of police. chicago was a police riot.
g’nite, Sir Peterr
Our message of no one is above the law is diluted when it is accompanied by breaking the law.
We can get our message out without resorting to boosh tactics. We must be vigilant that we do not become that which we are condoning.
Bobdog @ 192
I stand by this completely, Bobdog. Nice.
I wonder how many conversations just like this are taking place in comments threads all over the Internet tonight.
Well, with that thought in my head, I shall sign off and bid you all good night.
great letter Bobdog
gotta figure out something in addition to letters, tho.
perhaps we should all up our withholdings to eleven for a coupla pay periods? just an idea
Or non-violent demonstrations and sit-ins at electeds offices; they are mostly in their districts this week.
Tomorrow, I am calling the WH and my electeds.
Then we’ll figure out the next step.
I do very much want to hear these words from a Democrat tomorrow, though:
g’nite and sleep well, ‘pups
apres Irve, le deluge
g’nite trex, impeachment dreams
nite trex
That was a great letter Bobdog. Let us know if you get a coherent answer.
Meanwhile, this has certainly taken the air out of my balloon, so to speak. Goodnight, all.
nite cujo
cujo, a good nites sleep will put some wind back in your sails. g’nite
Suzanne @ 204
Does that mean “ix-nay on the atapult-cay filled with aming-flay og-day it-shay aimed at the WH” idea?
Nite, Sleepers!!!
hey jacqrat, yeah (big sigh).. lets catch the bastoids legally. nothing finer than knowing you got johnnie crook dead to rights and there aint nothing he can do about it. i’m wanting to feel that same thing with boosh cheeney et al
Jacqrat @ 213
Marvelous idea! But, it needs to be bucketfuls of excrement!!!
I’m not trying to debate Chicago.
I’m trying to agree that it is time to take to the streets…… on Wednesday, in your own town with one message across the country. Its simple.
Its time to act.
The voice of the people must get through to Harry Reid and
Nancy Pelosi to 1. strip Joe Lieberman of his chairmanship and
for Pelosi to start talking about beginning Impeachment proceedings.
My dog Jake suggests that they be showered with attention 24-7 with
this message. Also shower all the Democratic Congress critters
with this message. Send them chocolate, flowers, show up at
their events, film it for the Internet the encounters——make them
feel patriotic and accountable to the people
Help me remember, please. Clinton was:
- indicted (impeached) in the House,
- acquitted (not convicted) in the Senate,
- was eligible to be but never was indicted for purjury by a grand jury in spite of Ken Starr’s best efforts.
Also, per LooseHeadProp, the reason they didn’t indict him is that, while he lied under oath, the matter on which he lied was not material to the trial. So, it didn’t meet the legal definition of perjury.
Do I have that right?
Sam and Jake!
I think you are correct, wigwam. That is where the whole no underlying crime thing started that the rethuglicrooks twisted to use with irv libby.
Peterr @ 191
Leahy, is also a former prosecutor. The outrage is fine, but the dems really need to get off their ass and do something about the lawlessness of this administration. I’m really starting to believe this maladministration has no intention of giving power up ever.
Sam @ 218
Tomorrow, impeachment or Pelosi’s resignation should be on the table.
wigwam @ 219
Depends on the what the definition of is, is!!! ;-)
CTuttle @ 216
darn, in my haste I omitted the ucket-bays. Sorry!
After seeing and hearing, with their own eyes and ears, what the White House has been doing for the last 6 years by dint of their investigative hearings, if they then do nothing about it… that makes them complicit in my eyes.
It fuels the notion, that I’ve experienced from time to time over the years, that there isn’t really that much of a difference between the 2 major political parties in this country.
It saps the will to vote, never mind actually give money to these clowns.
Disgust doesn’t begin to describe my feelings toward everyone in DC right now. Whereas the Democrats make me want to throw up, the Republicans actually make me do it.
Seriously, with Democrats like these who needs Republicans? I’m dangerously close right now to just not giving a shit anymore.
Suzanne @ 215
but if the johnnie crooks are the ones making the commutations and pardons, we’re kinda sunk.
TPhilip @ 226
Please do not give up….
Jacqrat @ 225
For What??? Mere omission of quantity??? LOL!!! 8-)
Suzanne @ 221
That “no underlying crime” crap is too crazy. Libby was convicted of lying when he told investigators and/or the grand jury that he didn’t out Valerie Plame, a covert agent of the CIA. A jury of his peers concluded unanimously that “he lied when he said he didn’t out a covert agent” That means that it was established in a court of law that he did out a CIA agent. So, in what sense is the outing of covert agent not a crime?
Scooter Libby is innocent of an underlying crime in the same way that Al Capone is innocent of all crimes other than tax cheating.
Here’s what I’m gonna do.. metaphorically speaking, of course!
When I’m done with that I am gonna sing and dance along with PATTI!
darn, in my haste I omitted the ucket-bays. Sorry!
Is that a sin of omission or emission? Thomas Aquinas wants to know!
CTuttle @ 224
Per LooseHeadProp, to be “perjury” a lie under oath has to be material to the case being tried.
I truly believe that this could be the veritable straw that breaks the camel’s back!!! I think this debacle sparked the necessary rage to launch the proletariat into action!!! Any takers?
My dog Jake recommends that we send flowers to the offices of the
Democrats in Congress when they get back to work. The message
could be—-Are these flowers for the wake of the America with
the abdication of Congress or are they to celebrate your act of
courage in restoring Consitutional Democracy to the Nation.
Messages like this could be worded. What an event Congress–
flooded with beautiful flowers. Would make national TV.
The power of flowers. Flower Power. Remember the flowers in
the barrel of guns at the peaceful protests in Berkely when Gov.Reagen sent in the national guard over Peoples Park way back
in 1969, We have to think out of the box.
Sam, always a pleasure to hear Jake’s take on things.
wigwam @ 233
A cum-stained Blue Dress, doesn’t constitute a ‘High crime or Misdemeanor’ impeachable offense, unlike the outing of a covert agent, or worse, the entire network of counter-proliferation experts, during the era of A.Q. Khan!!! Whom is a newly freed man, the sheer irony is appalling!!!
I hope our warrioresses of truth are getting good rest tonight. Tomorrow’s gonna be a big day.
CTuttle @ 224
Per the Wikipedia:
Jacqrat @ 237
I believe that is the plan, jacqrat. One I will be enacting shortly. Starting to get a wee bit tired.
wigwam @ 239
Wigwam, you’re preaching to the choir!!! *g*
CTuttle @ 237
Please consider the well-being of Mary Matalin’s children before you type “cum-stained”.
Thank you!
Snark
Jacqrat @ 242
Duly noted!!! Bwhahaha…!!!
Suzanne @ 240
Please don’t go before you check your mail, suz.
this is only the beginning of a series of outrageous actions out of Bush.
in the sisties, people were already on the street anyway, word passed through the crowds and soon everyone was marching to the same place and thousands would show up. How it happened was a miracle.
already replied to, jacqrat :)
hey spidey… i think the general plan is to act locally this week, hunt down our congresscritters at their various speech/town halls and demand action - not words.
spiderpaws @ 245
I truly think the impetus for action has finally transpired, color me optimistic, but I believe the Rubicon has been forded!!! ;-)
spidey, finally cooling off here… a pleasant 64 with a nice breeze.. gets hot up here on the mt at 627 elevation - hoping that breeze continues
Forget a work stoppage. If you really want to garner some attention, STOP SHOPPING!!! except for essentials.
Seriously.
GRRRRRRRRR!
Bil @ 251
Whoa, that speaks volumes!!! ;-)
CTuttle @ 241
I understand.
But never again will wingnuts be allowed to say “Cinton committed perjury.”
He was impeach in a partisan House but exonerated by the Senate.
He was never indicted by a grand jury.
His lie under oath wasn’t perjury, because it was immaterial to the case at hand — see the Wikipedia.
Next time it comes up, I’m ready. ;-)
Also, Libby was convicted in court of perjuring himself when he claimed not to have outed a covert agent. A Bush-appointed judge gave him the minimum recommended under federal guidelines. Bush felt that was overly harsh.
Wigwam, the truth shall prevail!!! Speaking truth to power is priceless!!! Keep up the fight!!!
Big News at the PAW HOUSE ATTIC!!!!!!!
Rat electrocuted in the Rat Zapper! mr paws beside himself
well, time for this tired firepup to head to bed for some much needed rest. tomorrow, we fight again.
see ya tomorrow nite, same bat time, same bat channel
spiderpaws @ 254
well, that is an instant wake up. woohoo, spidey!
sqweak, sqweak, nite suzi
Nite Suzanne, sleep well.
CTuttle @ 254
It was so inspiring seeing Schuster so well prepared that, whenever a wingnut tried to say anything stupid, he was right on top of them. Maybe I’ll put all of this stuff on flash cards.
cute as a button he was too
awsome news spiderpaws…. my gawd you both have really had a time with it.
I know how mr paws feels.
wigwam @ 260
I was thinking that myself! Shuster’s harder on the guests than Matthews, thank God! Hardball should be Shuster’s show.

Truth doesn’t usually prevail until the principals are dead and then it is revision time.
our very first dead rat! imagine, it’s been months of slogging thru the rat jungles
for the lurker in suzanne…urp
spiderpaws @ 266
well, we have rats telling us what our pricipals are… and we have a dead rat…
let the revision begin!
g’nite all
TheOtherWA @ 263
He was even tougher than Olbermann. He didn’t even let them finish when they started talking shit.
The part I liked best was when that wingnut on the phone started talking nonsense, and Schuster turned it over to Issikof, who seemed to have rehearsed for exactly that comment and came down hard.
The first time I checked the computer today I saw that Libby was going to jail. The second time, it was to find out he wasn’t.
I was filled with joy, and then slapped back to Republican reality.
The Congress had better act now or there is liable to be an emergency that cancels the next election.
Suzanne @ 256
Bon Nuit, Ma Cheri!!!
wigwam @ 269
Shuster showed Tweety how to play some MLB Hardball!!! ;-0
Uh-oh, pesky crickets!
Howard Dean called it giving Libby a “get out of jail free card”. Click to see the card. :)
Renee in Ohio @ 274
LOL!!! Only one grouse, why does the card only apply to Shrub members? Oops, I answered my own question!!! Doh!!!
Well, on this most auspicious of nights, I must bid a fond adieu to the Lake!!! Aloha Oe!!!
Keith O is wrong Bush’s timing on his clemency while it is an attempt to sneak this past the American people it won’t work. Sure under normal conditions it would but the electorate is motivated, paying attention and polarized with 60% thinking Scooter should have served his sentenced. What do you want to bet that at family gatherings over the 4th of July at least one member of the family is into politics and can’t keep his mouth shut.
Wether their a disapointed Lefty or a triumphant Bushie over joyed that Scooter is free one thing is certain at 60% the Lefties will outnumber the Bushies at most family gatherings. After the family holiday talk and or fight chances are the Bushies will hear things from their extended family that they won’t hear on Fox News. Pissed off and angry many will check the facts that their family quoted on google or by asking around. Much like I expect Congress to do. We know what happened to the Democrats when they waffled on the war their popularity went into the tank. Republican and Democrat is going to realize after the holiday that doing nothing is not an option if you have to run for reelection soon.
Now for some of the good news we missed because of Scooter
McCain only has 2 million in the bank and is laying off campaign workers. The right will claim it was the immigration debate last week but unless John was expecting his supporters to send in all their checks after the debate. Then John was tanking before the immigration debate, he was tanking even before Fred Thompson got in the race. Why because with his military background people believed John more when he said he supported the war and would keep the troops there. Sure all the frontrunners for President on the GOP side are prowar but voters believed John. Not since Goldwater has there been a Republican who people believe IN and believe is WRONG about a war. McCain’s eventual passing says the road to the White House is not through Iraq. Immigration and Fred will be blamed by the MSM talking heads for McCain’s demise Rove can’t have people thinking the war is killing off GOP Presidential Candidates more than a year before the election.
Lets see, the consensus seems to be that we should get satisfaction by throwing the Democrats out of Congress. Hmmm, that Rove really does seem to be smart.
PMA no just the Democrats who won’t end the war.
A largely Catholic Supreme court has just made overturning Rove vs Wade a reality Catholic Bishops gave Bush a pass on executing people but gave Kerry hell for being prochoice. Now Rudy has to explain why he got an annulment, is flipflopping on how he used to be prochoice and why he hired a priest involved in and accused of molesting kids yet the Catholic Bishops so far have not given him grief. What the hell is the Catholic Church doing are they trying to bring Church attendance down? Why do Republicans get a pass on executing people, marrying and divorcing their cousins plus the whole rich people pay for annulments contraversy. Abortion, hiring Child Molesting Priests Rudy has so much dirt he is my preferred Republican candidate the problem is he makes the Catholic Church look bad…real bad. I wish the Catholic Bishops would convince Rudy not to run, a presidential run by Rudy airs way to much of the Church’s dirty laundry. Maybe people will focus on Rudy’s state campaign chair who bought half a kilo of Coke and his racist father who replaced the son in Rudy’s campaign. Bernie Kerick’s mob connections got him axed from Rudy’s company so why is Rudy holding on to Molesters and Racists? Just what are his values?
things come undone @ 281
Yea!
Fred Thompson is literaly a “Law and Order” candidate who votes to impeach Bill Clinton basicly for adultery, but he wants Scooter to go free and supports Bush’s Clemency. So adultery in Fred’s view is worthy of impeachment but outing an American spy’s identity for the whole world to see including Al Quieda is not a crime.
Fred is an oxymoron “Law and Order ” candidate the rule of law applies to everyone Fred including Republicans. This Scooter pardon issue is going to sink the “Law and Order” issue for all the Republican Presidential Candidates who supported Scooter’s pardon. After all how can you claim to be tough on crime when you support your guys getting a free pass on TREASON! I really want to hear how Scooter’s case is differnt and Bill’s crime? was worst.
I agree. The time is now.
I just wanted to send my very sincere sympathies to the FDL crew, with regard to the Scooter commutation. I saw the decision on the replay of ‘the newshour’ here this evening. I did what makes my kids crazy, screamed obscenities at the tv, again. HOw bad does it have to get before it the so called opposition actually DO something. (the democrats).
Good morning, pups. The NYT serves up Bobo who (surprise!!!) says that W was perfectly and utterly right to commute Scooter’s sojourn in the clink. Oh, as a bonus he tosses in an ad hominem attack on Joe Wilson. Bob Herbert writes about excessive police activity in New York City schools.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
Coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits just came out of the oven. I’ve got to dash and get the July 4 surprise for my office “secret pal” ready. Have as good a day as possible, and if you have high blood pressure you might want to avoid Bobo today. Just skip right past him to Mr. Herbert.
Debbie(aussie) @ 285
Thank You I’m feeling pretty devasted and I’m wondering about what or if the Democrats will do something. I’ve been trying to show how weak the Republicans really are with my comments earlier in the thread. But just how weak do the Republicans have to be before they feel safe enough to attack Bush? We need a Miracle!
Morning Marion, Thanks for the link, but I think I’ll skip Bobo this morning.
Needlenose.com has the six stages of grief up. It’s on the right hand side about half way down. From reading the comments, I’d say that we are all in stage two.
JPL @ 288
I wish I had! My blood pressure took a jump… He’s such a tool…
So lets count thanks to Lou Dobbs and the immigration debate all the Republican Presidential Candidates except John McCain can expect to lose the Hispanic vote. Now then as long as Obama is President or Vice President African American voter turnout is going Democratic. We just need to watch out for Gonzo trying to supress the vote especially in the South.
On top of that the Supreme Court getting rid of affirmative action is really going to piss off/motivate African Americans who were hopeing to send their kids to a good college. Pissed off voters are motivated voters thank you Supremes! With more single women voters out there and the Supremes recent ruling on abortion many people are wondering WHEN not IF Roe vs Wade will be overturned.
Again thank you Supremes Bush’s only chance at a historic legacy his Supreme Court picks are doing more to win us the election than anything the Democrats are doing. Oh yeah can’t forget the war in Iraq the only way we lose is if we elect a Democratic Presidential Candidate who wants to keep troops in Iraq. If we do something that dumb then we lose the independents who will see no difference betwwen electing a Democrat or a Republican. Overall I count a lot of strength and only one potential weakness.
Good morning!
We will always have losses. We must always expect losses.
I am ready to fight on.
Let’s get to work.
This isn’t a loss. We hang this around the neck of every republican presidential candidate. We ask them “Do you agree with the president that’s its one law for the President and his cronies and a different one for everybody else”.
well it’s morning and i’m still mad. atrios wrote something last night i really like:
egregious @ 292
‘Morning, egregious.
I’m not ready to concede a loss; I am, however, ready to take to the streets. It’s past time.
Good gravy, I am SOOO FURIOUS.
How is it that Paris Hilton can spend more time in jail for violating parole than Libby for lying under oath and making false statements to a grand jury and the FBI about national security?? No wonder they have ramped up the fear machine this week; they are to be feared more than any other terrorist as they steal our democracy from under our noses.
If this Dictator can unilaterally decide that the sentence for one of his most loyal agents should be reduced from 2.5 years to Zero, then he can just as easily decide that his own term in office can be extended beyond the suggested 8 years to any duration of his choosing - regardless of whether or not he ever allows elections to occur.
The slippery slope is steep - and we are already in a FULL BLOWN DICTATORSHIP.
Name one single law that applies to this Administration.
You can’t.
For all the “but Clinton perjured himself” crowd I want you to note one small difference. Clinton was acquitted in a republican controlled congress, Scooter was found guilty by a jury of his peers.
Vrk @ 295
what i want to know is - what is a democratically controlled congress going to do about it?
i guess the thing to do is to try to find out where my congressman will be tomorrow and give him a piece of my mind.
Nothing they can do about this per se, but they sure as hell can use it to get themselves a veto proof majority in congress and the presidency.
Good morning Americans. Lick our wounds, bind up the wounded, we have work to do. Everyone okay?
I used to think the Paris Hilton story was just another MSM shiny object and waste of brain cells, but having just read the editorial in the NYT today, I’m thinking it may actually provide some good hypocrisy exposure.
Surely Jon Stewart will be on it shortly…side-by-side video of wingnut bloviators on the injustice of reduced sentences for criminals. Do the crime, do the time.
Kung Fu Monkey has an interesting take on this.
Did anyone just watch Chris Matthews on Today show? I almost turned it off after Kristol but glad I didn’t..
Scarecrow @ 299
not really scarecrow. but if i write what i’m really thinking, i’m pretty sure i risk getting banned.
but thanks for asking.
JPL @ 303
What did Matthews say?
Scarecrow @ 300
No, not okay. Still fit to be tied and sputtering because nothing but cusswords want to come out. However, I have all day today to write letters and make phone calls to Congresscritters and just can’t wait to get at it.
Duncan Hunter is lying about the Libby facts on CNN. Interesting that Hunter using this to argue for the pardon of the two border patrol agents that the right has been in an uproar about.
mornin’
Chris Matthews related it to the war in Iraq, including the fact that people think that we found wmd and Saddam was involved in 9/11. He was on a tirade, tying the Libby case to the bigger case for war and all the falsehoods spread.
selise @ 305
They’ll only ban you for a few second, then realize it’s you and you get to come back. Promise.
Anger is good this morning. We have to use it well.
Of course, Matthews did not mention that he was responsible for spreading misinformation, himself.
JPL @ 308
good for tweety.
Selise, Yesterday even Marcy blessed her cuss words.. I’m still furious, but hopefully it will wake up some journalists.
One point I intend to make in my communications to my Congressional representatives is that, you know that table that impeachment is supposedly off of? That is OUR table, and I want a different service setting right NOW!
Scarecrow @ 309
that’s certainly the trick. not sure how to though….
Since we’re groping around and flailing for something constructive to do, I’d like to ask a favor of FirePups. If you have a Facebook page, please encourage two highly energetic and effective young organizers who are currently in Washington DC with the New Organizing Institute’s Summer Boot Camp. Here’s the missive one of them sent this morning:
Julielyn writes as Liberal Lucy at MichiganLiberal.com and does a bang-up job. Nirmal is one of our youngest activists at MichLib and is likewise very talented. I can’t say enough nice things about both of these passionate progressives; that they have committed themselves to learning how to be more effective organizers during a holiday week says a lot about their commitment to our causes.
So show them some love. And I’ll drop them a note “Lisa Simpson’s” Facebook page; the group works great, already joined, but the profile doesn’t allow me to add her as a friend yet. We’ll see about getting that fixed. Thanks for the assist, FirePups.
JPL @ 312
i have more than cuss words to say… but i don’t think that would be using my anger well - gotta find productive outlets.
…
scarecrow - you asked us how we’re doing. how are you?
One more word, TRex.
Impeach!
jeeze. “doing” not “going”
Carl Bernstein right now on Mornin’ Joe:
“It’s about lawlessness.” These people think they’re above the law. Beyond ideology. habeas, abu graib, …. his list goes on….
Mornin’ Joe tryin’ to mute him down….
Bernstein keeps on….
Rayne @ 317 -
done.
Whatever you say about the Clinton presidency, it was their private lives, not public policy.
This is a matter of routine lying about public policy, matters of life and death.
It is depressing….
All quotes from Bernstein now on MSNBC.
JPL & Prairie Sunshine - thanks for the cable “news” updates. no cable here, and i’m curious how things are being spun.
selise @ 322
done.
Take their power away or they will keep abusing it!
Nice letter, Trex. I wish I didn’t have the same resigned feelings that you do. 18 months to go and I don’t see anything happening to Bush. I guess he doesn’t either.
Thanks, selise, Elliott, greatly appreciated.
FDL letter:
Jane asks out to channel our outrage. Here is a way to do so. Write to your HRcritter about impeachment of the Dicktator, referencing the bill in Congress.
The websites have a place for signaling the relevant legislation. The bill is H. RES. 333,
110th CONGRESS, 1st Session and there are presently 11 sponsors.
It’s title is “Impeaching Richard B. Cheney, Vice President of the United States, for high crimes and misdemeanors”
Doesn’t that sound, well, peachy?
Scooter’s clemency leaves Bush open to another problem just who in the White House leaked Valerie Palme’s classified identity as a spy. Why has nobody lost their White House security clearence over this? Is the TRAITOR still leaking? How do we or Bush know for sure that they are not still leaking classified inteligence. President Bush seems awful blase about the fact there is a traitor in the White House. Its almost as if Bush knows who did it, why they did it, and that they won’t do it again unless HE WANTS THEM TO! The lack of a White House investigation, the lack of worry about a traitor, the Clemency of the only person we know who knows who the traitor is. Gods Below! its so obvious Bush knows, approves and is protecting the leaker he’s acting like he wants to get caught! He’s acting like a child so desperate for attention he acts bad on purpose to get attention because thats how he was raised. Just what parenting books did Barbara Bush read “the Twelve Caesars”, “I Claudius” the Joe Mengele book on raising/torturing kids, “Yes You to can Raise your own Manson Family”?
Hey, maybe someone will figure out a way to hit us up for money because of the Libby pardon, ya think?
Matthews coming up on Mornin’ Joe.
Bernstein on his book, it’s a balanced look at Hillary [illuminating, says Mornin’ Joe]–it won’t keep her from being president.
If there had been such a book on Bush, Bernstein says, he wouldn’t have been elected president….
Bernstein the greater; Woodward the lesser, says I.
When are we going to get off our fat asses and leave the f…kin blog behind for action in the street?
Again (and again, and again…) Here’s a link to a copy of the internal White House phonebook, in case the switchboards are jammed, and you want to get through. And you know you want to. Maybe somebody smart could set up a phone tree…
Bluetoe @ 332
some of us have been in the street. hanging out here is just a complement to that action.
i had a dream that communicating on the political blogs could be a way of amplifying the action on the street. hasn’t turned out that way… at least not yet.
Bluetoe @ 332
Oh, that’ll have em quakin’ in their boots.
Matthews making the case the prez wasn’t proud of the decision, wrestled with it.
I call bullsh*t. The only thing Bush wrestled with was the best way to perpetuate the coverup.
The Chee-knee WHIG pushback didn’t just affect the Wilsons, though that was obviously their target. It affected the entire CIA. And intelligence gathering. And Americans’ faith in their institutions of government.
WHO SAID THIS “What more do we need to know? These people think they are above the law. This president thinks he is above the law. The vice-president believes he is above the law. And when democratic leaders act as if they are the law unto themselves, and are prepared to upend the justice system to serve their own political ends, it’s time for a revolt. Sorry, David. But this won’t be forgotten - ever. It’s a final straw, a call to wake up before these criminals get away with it one more time.” Answer below
Andrew Sullivan
lambert strether @ 333
thank you, great info! i think that’s worth doing. but even more important (to my thinking) is calling the Ds in congress to tell them to put impeachment back on the table. our country is worth it.
JPL @ 338
What did Gilbert say?
raven @ 340
Maybe, just maybe…
Upon further reflection this may be the last big wet kiss
DarthBush had to give out.Leahy has already laid “Nixonian stonewalling” around his neck and the investigations continue. Raise your hand if you think Iraq is gonna get better anytime soon. The news over the next 18 months will only get worse for them.
Desperate people do desperate things, and right now maintaining the cover-up is everything. We are one-foot-on-a-banana-peel away from the collapse of this administration and they know it.
Matthews saying same, same Clinton perjury, Libby perjury, hypocrisy on both sides.
Lizard braining it…
Bernstein had it right: persistent lying about public policy, matters of life and death.
Joe Scarborough just called Joe Wilson a “scumbag” under his breath.
Oo, oo, MSNBC reports Iran was behind the Karbla attack.
American Idolator @ 344
Joe’s a fucking moron.
Prairie Sunshine @ 343
So Tweety thinks two wrongs make a right? Did he fail Sunday School? In what Universe does lying about adultery equal Treason?
Raven @345, One way to change the subject is to go ahead and bomb Iran. Let’s remember to flood the phones at the White House today.
raven @ 345
Fear mongering, they’ve been pushing this story for two days now. Right up there with the so-called terror attack in Glasgow.
The only terror at work here is being drummed up by the White House, to hide their tracks and obscure their continued criminality.
Oops, should have guessed by the spinning on Submit Comment that Scarecrow had a new thread upstairs.
That right wing talk machine really makes you sick on days like this. WSJ is mad that Bush didn’t give Libby total pardon. Brooks in the NYT froths at the mouth badmouthing Joe Wilson. Really, a bunch of hypocrits and scumbags.
Another oops, it’s Christy at bat this morning. Jeepers. I think I need more sleep.
TRex @ 162
Long since EPU’d, but, y’know, timezones.
TRex, I wasn’t suggesting “smashing a couple of windows”, let alone all by your lonesome.
But a couple of hundred thousand people filling Pennsylvania Avenue, peacefully blocking the Resident from leaving, that would help. So would a couple hundred thousand people in the centres of each of the major cities. At the same time. On July 4. This is possible. That Internet thingy might be good to organise something with.
I mean, “ooh I might lose my job”. Sheesh. Homos like you and me risked that every day up until recently just for being who we are. But our elders still turned up and protested for their rights in the 1950s and 1960s, despite the risks and the costs. Look up “Daughters of Bilitis” or the “Mattachine Society”.
Ditto the commenter upthread who talked about not being able to afford to protest.
What you are saying is that your current level of consumption is more important to you than your Constitution. That’s your prerogative. But if you want the answer to the question of how the USA lost its way, there it is.
No one wants to play with me, that is respond to my posts. I guess I play too rough. Someone suggested I review comment archives presumably to get a feel of what’s expected, comraderie and stuff. I think getting out of the deep sh*t we’re in trumps everything. As I see it, the only thing that matters is innundating Nancy Pelosi with letters saying she should reconsider her stand against impeachment. If you feel like writing the House of Representatives zip code is 20515.
[Zip code corrected by the moderator]
We need to get into the habit of expressing ourselves as forcefully as possible and eschew the congratulations and hail fellow, well met crap, a good reason I don’t belong here. I think promoting habeus corpus mostly to guys who gave it away two years ago is a waste of time. I wrote Nancy a letter. Posted it on my blog.
Before going, I’d like to make a few points. At present the internet is mostly ego trips. Myspace attracts millions in almost no time. It could, because electronics is nothing if not versatile, become a political party or anything its users desire. I don’t see them desiring anything other than what they have. People spend time voting for American Idol, but they won’t spend time trying to influence Nancy Pelosi. We need to create a climate like the Immigration bill. People saw it as in their individual interest to defeat the bill. They conveyed that feeling to their representatives. We need to do that for impeachment. I have no idea how. It’s something that should be talked about.
For the longer term, I tried to create COPE (Citizen Oversight of Public Expenditure). In my state (Connecticut) the Freedom of Information Act requires local governments to provide the electronic equivalent of the town’s check book. The idea would be to post every town check in a searchable data base for interested townspeople to see where their tax monies go. There should be discussion groups and whatever. Unfortunately I lack the technical skills to even come close. The website template would be available for use in other towns. Using a standard form means there’s no learning curve to check another town’s information. Unfortunately standardization makes many people uncomfortable. The idea is to compare expenses, class sizes or whatever as well as the different town’s responses to public problems. Getting seed money, servers etc to create such a network provides experience for using the internet differently than we do today. Once we get connected and communicating there’s no limit to what we can talk about or what we can do.
Education is another area which might provide the basis for a network of people interested in public problems. It could be a section of COPE. I believe today’s schools literally drive our young crazy. You have only to see a three year old watch television to realize how engrossing it is. Classroom teachers can’t come close. There is no reason for kids to learn long division etc. with paper and pencil when they can buy a decent hand held calculator for fifteen bucks. High schools generally have wood shops taught by tenured wood shop teachers. They don’t have electronic shops where kids can screw around with mother boards etc. Instead of term papers, kids can create DVD’s if the school board can be persuaded to see educational improvement in purchasing equipment rather than raising teacher’s salaries or reducing class sizes. Schools could become interactive with a pool of DVD’s and other materials available throughout the network.
This seems off topic, but not if you see our major problem as our inability to communicate with each other. Comment sections following posts are a start. If you look at them, you don’t see analysis or much of anything except one liners and prior posts reproduced ad nauseum. If the proposed long term projects are of interest or if you have a pet project of your own I might be able to help with drop me a line at ekunin@optonline.net
Perhaps we can make something happen.
Ciao
I copy and paste posts. Don’t know why it got screwed up. The zip code is 20515. My letter is at http://www.thetatterdflag.com/?p=18
