My e-mail to Pat Leahy this hour:

Senator: like many, I was content to let the clock rid us of Bush…but today’s commutation marks a 200 plus year low in American politics. I am, for the first time in 64 years, ashamed and embarrassed to an American. If I could sell my citizenship to a Mexican for ten dollars, I would feel I’d taken advantage of him. Screw Bush … and, you, sir, would do well to get off your ass. As of this hour, thanks to George W., no political figure in the nation has any place to hide. What you do now will tell us who you are.

As much as I’d like to impeach Chimpy, this isn’t an impeachable offense. Presidents all the way back to Washington pardoned people, with some, including President Clinton, pardoning those convicted of major crimes. No one can say they didn’t see this coming. It’s politics. You can’t be shocked if the lions bites off your head, when you stick it in its mouth. The sleezies in Washington always have, and always will, stick it to justice.

On the plus side, the Libby Lobby did, as someone else said earlier, want a complete pardon of the criminal. They didn’t really get what they want. He’s still been convicted, will still be unable to practice law, and still will pay a huge fine.

I agree with many of the comments and expressions of outrage. I’d also like to offer something Gandhi once said:

“When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it, always.

Whenever you are in doubt that that is God’s way, the way the world is meant to be, think of that and then try to do it His way.”

This is Absolutely fair.

Do you think any Executive branch staff member will ever go in front of a grand jury from now on? Because of Libby, never again.

If you can, think about the big picture.

I think from Bush’s viewpoint the commutation is unavoidable. Bush was not only trying to appease the pressure from Libby supporters, but making a self-serving calculation. Libby’s part of the inner circle of Bush’s administration. Libby has all the inside knowledge. At this juncture, if Bush hadn’t shown loyalty to Libby, Libby could easily return the disloyalty to disloyalty by revealing the inside work of this administration any time in the future. Bush has only more than one year left, I think at this moment, he probably thinks his legacy more than anything else. He must know let Libby loose with any resentment would do some harm to his legacy in the long run. Libby could write a unfavorable tell-all book about his Bush years or a book about the decision leading to this unsuccessful war.

I don’t believe Bush has any true loyalty to anyone. He is such a nasty, self-centered, bully type of guy. But I do know he would do anything to shield any screcy from sun light for the sake of saving his face. He has built quite a record to support this.
