Contrary to the GOP talking point that Bush is playing to his base, he’s not. It’s clearly not about poll numbers. Bush is covering his own tracks and obstructing justice.

George Bush, clinically incapable. I like it.

Bush is “playing to his base” if his base is the elite group of neocons who harbor hopes that if they just manage to conceal the documents which chronicle the crimes of this administration, they can play a leading role in the future of the Republican party.

That means that Bush and Republicans can’t allow for the possibility that another investigation (by another prosecutor in a future administration) ever happens.

Impeachment may then be the only opportunity we will have to get to the facts, and also for Democrats to take the White House in 2008.

The question now goes to Nancy Pelosi: “Why was impeachment ‘off the table’ before the last election, and why is it still?”

There’s a point of light for you. As much as I am breathing deep to meditate on constructive action, the accelerating collapse of the Bush Administration and the Republican Party is de-lish.

Keep breathing through the changes, keep breathing, stay in the heart, let a hand of (Tough) Love wield the Sword of Truth …

While David Corn is correct in his piece today that Bush initially promised that anyone found leaking classified information would be gone from his administration, this is not what Bush was saying later.

Note the following I found on CNN’s website:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Bush said Tuesday he welcomes a Justice Department investigation into who revealed the classified identity of a CIA operative.

“If there’s a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is,” Bush told reporters at an impromptu news conference during a fund-raising stop in Chicago, Illinois. “If the person has violated law, that person will be TAKEN CARE OF (emphasis mine).”

Hmm., just a thought. Remember Condi Rice warning us about the dangers of broadcasting videos of Al Qaeda on TV? ‘They speak in codes to one another, and we do not want them to send secret messages to their followers.’

Just to review the timeline a bit: On December 30, 2003 Patrick Fitzgerald is appointed Special Counsel in the investigation of the CIA leak / Plame case.
Just a little over a month later (February 10, 2004), CNN quotes Bush saying this to reporters about the DoJ investigation.

Repeat that again, Bush.
BUSH: “THAT PERSON WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF.”
