Darwin looked at and described the changes in individual organisms and then discussed the changes observed over time. He watched the trees in the forest. The evolving organism is the planet itself. We are just one of many unique examples of life in the bio-film. We are not in any way necessary to the organisms survival. (800 million years of dinosaurs?) We are now indeed inimical to the organisms future. The organism has a bug, perhaps a slight increase in temperature will reduce the pests numbers and restore some balance. A fever is dangerous to the whole organism but pests must be controlled or the life-form will not survive anyway. We never were a strong species physically, just incredibly mean. I hope our survivors will be smarter. The fever will come, we who read here know there is no hope. King george rules!

The one alternative with the most chance of success, is for Al Gore to run for President. If he ran, he would become the Democratic nominee, and would stand the best chance of beating the Republican nominee.

As President of the US, Gore could marshall the enormous resources of the USA and help the world cut emissions by the massive amounts needed.

Gore could save the earth.

Write everything you want to say, no matter how offensive - just get it all out and tell it like it is.

Then scrap it (or save it for yourself but don’t send it) and write something that is more likely to work for you.

This is probably the most salient of advice. No, I have not sent the email yet. It is so easy for the passion of the moment to fry right through reasonableness. This email is somewhat tame, a mere shadow, indeed a cheap copy of how I feel.

The question is actually, the future of the Demecratic party on the micro-level. On one end the goal is to join hands at the river and sing kumbaya in Broderville, while gently whispering “comtiy” in one anothers ear.

The other end is a caged battle death match where comprimise is found simultaneously with the soap on the floor, and the only folks bending over are democrats.

I grow weary of being understanding and sympathetic and long to throw some serious haymakers against these racist homophobic misogynistic bastids, and their stepford wife apologists too.

great writing - save the good stuff for us - trying to talk to the right requires a degree in psychology. see Maggie above!

OFG - you would do well to try to find out what she is afraid of, which is what is driving her reactions.

Re: impeachment — IMHO, Dems need to concentrate their efforts on winning the war of ideas vis-a-vis conservatism and decimating the Neocon ideology. Both Judiciary committees and Waxman is where the action is. We HAVE to make the case first.

Jonathan Turley is great.

Perhaps a very silly question but who would you focus on for impeachment hearings? Going after AG is hardly likely to achieve anything re policy change on global warming in the next 18 months. Going after Bush might catapult Cheney into undisguised exercise of power and certainly kill all dreams of policy change on this issue. Going after Cheney? Bush will dig his heels in and switch his psychopathic antics from frogs to Iran.

I still don’t understand why the G8 caved in to Bush’s intransigence or the rest of the world didn’t just go ahead with the Kyoto and Montreal Protocols.

Kyoto already laid the foundation for matching sacrifices demanded of countries according to their contribution to create this mess by preferring to emphasise per capita, not national total, greenhouse gas emissions. Montreal reaffirmed that position but made it binding rather than voluntary. Yes it would leave out the USA and Australia, the two biggest per capita emitters of green house gases (both CO2 and CFC114) but its still more progress than what we are likely to achieve as the situation stands now.

Howard will not win the elections due before the end of this year and there will be a change of policy here as soon as we get him out. He is decidedly coming across as a vengeful and spiteful old mudslinger, out of step and out of touch, not only re global warming but on a whole range of issues.

The point is the longer the US prevaricates, the less opportunities will its enterprise have in wresting a commanding lead in new technologies, particularly from Germany. And that means money.
